Each year the Ken Stephen Award recognises a player who has not only inspired fans with his on field talent but who has also stood out through his work in the community.

Since 1988 the Award has honoured the likes of Wayne Pearce, Andrew Ettingshausen Mark Coyne, Peter Sterling, Hazem El Masri, The Parramatta Rugby League team, Dean Widders and Jason Stevens for their contributions to the game and the community.

Michael Monaghan was one of eight nominations presented to the NRL Board in 2006.

Michael work with physically and mentally disabled children at the Arranounbai School in Frenchs Forest was judged to be exceptional.

His association with the Arranounbai school extends to working with the children, assisting in rehabilitation and in believing in what they have to offer the community.

He and his Manly team mates have already raised $35,000 towards purchasing a bus for the school. Macquarie Bank has agreed to match them dollar for dollar meaning the Manly players need to find another $20,000 to bring the $110,000 bus to the Arranounbai School.

NRL Chairman Mr Barry Pierce praised Monaghan efforts:

&ldquoRugby League players contribute enormously to the community each week.

&ldquoTo stand out in such a group takes a very special kind of commitment and Michael has demonstrated that in 2006.

NRL MEDIA RELEASE - Tuesday 26 th September 2006
NRL Final seriesPaul Simpkins has been appointed to referee the 2006 Telstra Premiership Grand Final at Telstra Stadium at 7.00pm on Sunday.

It will be the Sydney police officer first Grand Final appointment capping a career that has spanned 258 first grade games, three State of Origin and two Test matches.

The 37 year old today said he was delighted and honoured to have been given the appointment.

No matter what your role in the game you want to earn the right to be there on Grand Final Day and it certainly been a dream of mine as a referee, he said today.

We got a great squad of referees and to be selected out of that squad for this game is something you&rsquove got to take a bit of pride in.

certainly a great way to finish the year after having missed a few weeks with injury earlier in the season.

For all of that though the game isn&rsquot about the referee and I&rsquoll be concentrating on making the right calls when needed and letting the players have their day.

Referees coach Robert Finch said Simpkins deserved his appointment to the season biggest game:

He been knocking on the door of the Grand Final for the last couple of seasons really, and he kept improving as a referee through all of that time.

This year the race between Paul and Steve Clark in particular was certainly tight.

While you&rsquove got to feel for Steve given the length of his career, the Grand Final is about seizing the moment and Paul has done that.

These guys do an incredible job in the face of some unreasonable criticism at times and they deserve to take some pride in what they have achieved at this time of year.

& sure Paul will do a great job and I&rsquod like to congratulate all the referees for their efforts in 2006.

The touch judges for the Telstra Premiership Grand Final are Rod Lawrence and Steve Carrall.

The Video Referees are Bill Harrigan and Chris Ward.

Steve Clark is the Stand-by referee.

Media Release Immediate Release &ndash Auckland, New Zealand

INITIAL TRAIN ON SQUAD NAMED

NZRLNew Zealand Rugby League chairman Sel Bennett has today confirmed a 19-man train-on squad for the Kiwis&rsquo Gillette Tri-Nations campaign and the New Zealand A side clash with Australia A.

In total 11 Warriors players - including hooker Nathan Fein - have been named in the initial squad.

Kiwis coach Brian McClennan said Fein, who has played for the Queensland State of Origin side, had earned his selection.

&ldquoNathan has been the number one starting hooker for the Warriors this season, he said.

&ldquoHis Nana was born in Wanganui so he is eligible through parentage.

&ldquoIt actually wouldn&rsquot have been long and he would have been eligible through residency as well.

&ldquoHis form has been very good this year and he pledged his allegiance to the Kiwis. He was very close to making the Queensland side but he chosen to play for the Kiwis over that.

&ldquoIt shows you how much he loves our country and how much he loves the culture of the people. It a positive step.

McClennan made it very clear the door was not closed on any player.

&ldquoWe have kept the squad tight at the moment, he said.

&ldquoOnce we have confirmed fitness and seen who becomes available as clubs exit the play-offs, we&rsquoll make further judgements about who might be needed for the final mix.

&ldquoThe squad that we&rsquove picked is a little different from last year.

&ldquoThere an age limit &ndash a youth policy &ndash in the New Zealand A side this year.

&ldquoLast year we were able to pick a broader base of players because it was open.

The only player not considered for selection in the initial train-on squad from the 2005 Gillette Tri-Nations series squad is North Queensland Cowboys hooker David Faiumu who requires surgery on a groin injury.

The players named in this squad have two weeks off training before they get back into business.

This will also give the Kiwis and New Zealand A staff a chance to assess the medical reports of all the players named.

&ldquoThe guys are getting a couple of weeks refresher break and after that we&rsquoll be able to confirm things a bit more, he said.

&ldquoWe&rsquoll get the medical reports back from the clubs in that time and find out what medical issues the players have.

&ldquoWe&rsquoll find out more about the extent of some injuries and what rehab is required.

The train-on squad is :
Patrick Ah Van, Louis Anderson, Nathan Fein, Epalahame Lauaki, Simon Mannering, Sam Rapira, Jerome Ropati, Evarn Tuimavave, Manu Vatuvei, Brent Webb, Ruben Wiki NZ Warriors
Iosia Soliola Roosters
Frank Pritchard, Tony Puletua Panthers
Nigel Vagana Sharks

Tuesday, September 05, 2006 MEDIA RELEASE

arlThe National Rugby League Chief Executives have today supported further work towards a standardised club based approach to the testing for illicit substances.

The matter was first raised with the clubs and the RLPA at the start of 2005 as the NRL revised its previous policies in line with the latest World Anti Doping Authority standards.

Having established a strong WADA policy as its primary objective, the NRL is re-focusing on greater consistency across clubs in relation to illicit substances used out of competition

The WADA Code treats stimulants (including those found in many illicit substances) as being performance enhancing in competition but accepts that they (unlike drugs such as steroids) cannot improve performance at other times, or on a lasting basis.

&ldquoIt an issue we&rsquove had on the agenda for some time and it certainly an opportune point at which to raise it again, NRL Chief Executive Mr David Gallop said today.

&ldquoMost of the clubs are active to some point already in this area.

&ldquoWe support a club based approach but certainly would like to see some more uniform guidelines.

The CEO also discussed alternatives to the June 30 anti tampering deadline.

They supported a club having the right to have a &lsquolast rights&rsquo negotiation up until round 13 of the final year of his contract.

All players and clubs would be able to negotiate prior to that and to reach in principle agreements that would not be registered until the &lsquolast rights&rsquo period had passed.

The clubs have also agreed to pursue a &lsquotemplate&rsquo system that would standardise the method in which offers are put forward and accepted at all levels. This would minimise the chance for future disputes around negotiations.

TRAIN ON SQUAD PROCESS CONFIRMED

NZRLNZRL coaching staff and selectors have confirmed that players will be added to the expanded train-on squad for the Kiwis and NZ&rsquoA&rsquo as clubs are eliminated from the NRL and UK Super League competitions.

These squad additions will be released at 1pm Wednesday afternoon each week to allow time for various housekeeping tasks such as injury status confirmation, internal and club communication.

Kiwis coach Brian McClennan has the added challenge of monitoring players and communicating with selectors/advisors across three countries with the timing becoming particularly important once UK SuperLeague play-offs commence.

McClennan expects a tight Gillette Tri-Nations Battle suggesting the 2006 series will be one of the toughest.

And that not just because the Kiwis will go into the tournament as the defending champions.

McClennan men will get the chance to play in front of their home town fans across the country during this year series.

And the significance of this is something the coach will impress on his team as soon as they come into camp.

&ldquoJust to be in front of a home crowd is very important especially given the fact that we very rarely play at home these days, McClennan said.

&ldquoIf you sat down with any Kiwi who had played more than 10 tests and asked them how many they had played at home they&rsquod probably answer less than 20 percent.

&ldquoThat just the way the world of rugby league is and we accept that.

&ldquoThis time &ndash the first since 1989 &ndash we get to play three at home.

&ldquoHow exciting is that.

&ldquoI&rsquoll be talking to the boys about the importance of playing well in front of your home crowd because it doesn&rsquot happen very often.

With the start of the Gillette Tri-Nations tournament just around the corner the excitement is building for what is set to be one of the closest competitions in international league history.

The Australians will be strong as usual, McClennan said.

And the Great Britain team is going to be really exciting.

They&rsquore used to playing in summer conditions now.

Normally when the Great Britain team came down to New Zealand to play there used to be white legs and red faces.

They were used to playing in the winter, so I think they&rsquoll be the dark horses.

Its going to be an exciting series. We are excited about it and we looking for it.

The Rugby League Agent Accreditation Committee met this afternoon for the purposes of considering the question of penalty to be imposed on player agent Mr George Mimis as a result of the committee earlier findings against him.

The committee received written submissions from Mr Mimis as well as oral submissions made by his legal representative Mark Petrucco.

Mr Petrucco has asked for, and been granted, a further opportunity to address an issue raised by the committee and has been given until the close of business on Monday, September 4 to do so.

The Committee has emphasized upon Mr Petrucco the need to comply with that timetable in order that the matter can be resolved as soon as possible.

It is proposed to convene a further meeting of the committee as soon as possible after September 4 in order to finalise the matter.

The committee also further discussed issues under investigation which relate to player manager Mr James Banaghan.

The chairman of the Committee, Mr Geoff Bellew, will be writing to Mr Banaghan lawyers in relation to those matters.

Given that they are the subject of a current investigation no further comment can be made at this stage.
