The CFMEU Canberra Raiders under-20s stormed through to the Toyota Cup playoff, with a tough 18-14 win over the St George Illawarra Dragons. The minor premiers scored three first half tries and skipped to an 18-4 half time lead, before the Dragons crept back into the game early in the second period. The battered and bruised Canberra side held on to their lead 18-14 for the final 20 minutes and coach Tony Adam said he was incredibly proud of the side's effort. "I actually thought if we held the ball a bit more in the first half we could've got an even bigger lead," Adam said. "But it was a very tough game and our physios will be busy this week." Stand-in captain Joel Thompson was simply brilliant for the minor premiers. The former Junior Kangaroo made countless bursts down the left hand side and played through eye and rib injuries to inspire his team to victory. "I had a big role to step in to [taking over the captaincy from Shaun Fensom], Shauno really knows how to lead good when he is in the team," Thompson said after the match. "It was a pretty tough match, a very satisfying victory." Justin Carney and Shaun Fensom have both vowed to return to the side for next week's decider, but it was the remaining players who stole the show in the preliminary final. Utility forward Andrew Edwards was given Fensom's number 13 jumper, and he did it great justice. . "All week the boys have been calling me Shaun Fensom at training and reminding me of how much work I would have to do in this game," Edwards said. "It was the biggest game in a lot of these boys' lives and there were a lot of nerves around during the week. But today we showed we could do it." St George Illawarra got the better start, with half back John Kennedy scoring in just the third minute. The Dragons received good filed position on the back of a Nick Skinner infringement, before Jake Marketo broke the line and look destined to score. But Josh Dugan stripped the ball out of Marketo's hand, and it bounced around the in-goal area. Kennedy dived on the loose ball to put the Dragons in front. But referee Phil Haines soon blew two penalties the Raiders' way and Green Machine captain, Joel Thompson pushed his way through the Dragons defensive line to level the match. The Raiders scored again, in the 16th minute, with prop Nick Skinner finishing off a dazzling Raiders' try. On the last tackle, the Raiders worked the ball down the blind side and Drury Low scooted down the touch line. He chip-kicked the ball back on the inside and Skinner, backing up, caught the ball, stepped inside the cover defence and dived over the line. The minor premiers had another two good chances to extend their lead, but each time an intercept pass was thrown close to the line. The Dragons got up the other end with the help of back to back penalties and forced two goal-line drop outs from the Raiders. But the Raiders' line not only held strong, but some punching hits from Jarrod Croker and Andrew Edwards got the Raiders back on the front foot. The first half was littered with big hits by both sides. The Raiders scored on the brink of half time, with Andrew Edwards crossing between the uprights. Edwards - recalled into the starting team for injured captain Shaun Fensom - burst straight up the middle of the ruck and through the Dragons defence from close range to give the Raiders an 18-4 lead at the break. The Dragons came out firing in the second half and almost scored when Marketo dropped the ball over the line for the second time in the match. But they didn't make the same mistake again. St George Illawarra winger Daniel Nicastri pushed past Low to score in the corner and reduced the Raiders' lead to 10 points with just under half an hour left to play. Some scrappy errors crept into the Raiders' game, and it looked like the game's physicality had taken its toll on the minor premiers. The Dragons scored again, this time it was Clifford Morris who scored next to the uprights. The red and whites battered the Raiders defensive line, and Canberra just couldn't keep them out. The final half hour was scoreless, but thrilling none-the-less. Both teams threw everything at each other, and in the end the minor premiers just held on. The Raiders were absolutely out on their feet, but their character and class shone through in the end. The Raiders will now play the winner of Brisbane and the Warriors next Sunday. Some very quick play the balls we was Matraville gain 80 meters when an Adam Reynolds chip kick was caught by Jordan Rankin who had the ball stripped in a one - on - one tackle, Matraville spread the ball and Matraville 5/eight Jerome Leolahi dive over close to the posts. Story BY : ANNA YEO  Photo's By : In an amazing show of talent and determination South Dubbo Primary has taken out the NSW PSSA Rugby League Classic Shield knockout after downing Inverell 24-14 in the grand final on Tuesday. It is the first time in the competition’s 32-year history that a Dubbo school has taken out the title, which capped off an enormously successful year for South Dubbo. After ploughing through the Western Area competition, Dubbo faced a tough semi-final against Western Sydney’s Lethbridge Park last week. Despite the size of Lethbridge, South Dubbo held strong and came away with the win to secure their spot in Tuesday’s grand final, which was held at Campbelltown. Onlookers at this week’s match described Inverell as the most consistent side Dubbo has faced this season, and with scores locked at 10-all at half-time, the heat was on the young side. But after running in two more tries before the final whistle the Dubbo boys knew they had the title, screaming away with a comfortable10-point win to secure the shield. Coach of South Dubbo, Paul Loxley was over the moon with his sides win, saying he was pinching himself the whole way home in amazement. “The boys had a lightning start with Joe Stagemen jumping on a loose ball for our first try,” Loxley said. “They came back to level the scores at half time but we got a couple more in during the second to come away with it.” Loxley said Dubbo’s attack was structured and flawless and their defence was solid. “They had a couple of big players and we had a couple of bleeding noses, but they kept at them and defended well.” Loxley said Tuesday’s win wouldn’t have been possible if it wasn’t for the support of the teachers and students at South Dubbo Primary. He said the commitment and support they showed throughout the competition went a long way towards the success the school had in the winning the shield. “The planets were aligned on Tuesday and our boys made history, and that’s something nobody will ever be able to take away from them,” Loxley said. “For the boys to win a State title is absolutely wonderful.” |

Story BY : GRANT ROBERTSON  FARRER Memorial Agricultural High School celebrated its best rugby league day in its history when it won both the Buckley and University Shields at a wet Campbelltown Stadium yesterday. Inverell’s Ross Hill Public School wasn’t as lucky, losing its State PSSA Knockout Final 24 - 14 to Dubbo South. But Farrer flew the North West flag high. After Farrer’s Under 14s beat Cromer High 26-4 in the Buckley Shield final, the open side defeated Sarah Redfern High 42-16 to notch a second University Shield. And Farrer had to win its second University Shield the hard way, playing all of the second half with 12 men. Leading 10-nil about 10 minutes from half-time, the Farrer supporters and players were stunned when NRL referee Jason Robinson sent halfback Jake Hawkins off for a high tackle. His teammates didn’t think there was anything in it but it opened the door for Sarah Redfern who hit back to score and make it 10-6. The game had started in an arm wrestle for the first 20 minutes but Farrer took charge after Shae Collins made a strong run and popped a pass to captain Scott Blanch to cross. Three minutes later Ryan Pooley was over out wide for a 10-nil lead. Farrer went to the break up 14-6 after Jack Shelton was pulled down a metre from the line but managed to flick a pass to Josh Dutton for him to score. Following a 60m dash from Matt Allwood, Andy Mack scored the killer try on the back of a great dummy half run from Ben Williams. Dominic Bower also crossed for a double and Cameron Mitchell slid over in the same corner to stretch the advantage to 36-10. Sarah Redfern scored another consolation try but Blanch scored the final try, a fitting reward for the Manly recruit who was named player of the final and player of the year after the game. Farrer coaches Steve Cavanagh and Gus Comi were delighted and proud of their side which battled a bigger side in wet conditions with just 12 players. “Not everything went to script today,” Cavanagh said. “The strongest thing we had was our defence. “They (Sarah Redfern) had a lot of ball in the first half and they cracked us a couple of times but they were just lucky kicks and that was all. “And we did play most of the game with a key player missing and they’re 35-minute halves so it’s a long game. “That just showed the character this side has and again the strength off the bench was evident. “Ben Williams had a huge game, Andy Mack played really well and Cameron Mitchell played really well. “Every single one of the players off the bench was good. “Matt Allwood, to make that break from our corner when we were under the pump was brilliant. “Shae Collins was huge, Josh Dutton was huge and Scott Blanch would have to be the best leader of a schoolboy football side I’ve seen. On Saturday the 13th of September Nyngan under 14’s rugby league played against Coonabarabran under 14’s to play for the Group 14 premiership. The boys were lead out by the captain Corey Skews and the cheer of the crowd was enormous for the Tigers, horns beeping, whistling, and the yelling and scream from the families of the boys. Coona won the toss and kicked off. The kick wasn’t a very good one and was soon picked up by our centre (Corey) who ran it up for the first hit. Our lock (Kieran) took a storming run up the middle which gave the boys good metres. Then our halves went to work combining together on both sides James and Luke worked really well. Our forwards played really well to very reliable hands on the day and good strong runs help gain good metres for the boys they couldn’t of done this without the great work by our hooker(Zach). Kieran was the kicking man did basically every kick except goal kicking. He booted the ball way down the field which got picked up by the Coona full back. But the Coona boys’ hands weren’t helping them at all. Nyngan had the ball back right on Coona’s 10m line. After a couple of hit ups our Kieran crossed the line to put the first points on the board. Corey converted it to make the score 6-0. Coona kicked off and Nyngan had a few hit ups but then made a mistake which put Coona in perfect position to put some points on the board. They did exactly that to they hit it up hard until the 5/8(Brad Kable) crossed the line. It was then converted by there half back to make it six all. The kick off was a great one and it wasn’t after to many runs Coona dropped it again. The Tigers had great field position to put points on the board. Our reliable forwards did there job then our Half back James ‘jimmy’ white got in there got the ball and got it to our 5/8 (Luke). Luke gave it off to Kieran who crossed over for his second try. The kick was converted by Corey to make it 12-6. The Tigers ran out for the second half. They kicked of and a Coona winger dropped it. Nyngan had there set of six and used it well running both the backs very strongly and the forwards the same to. Coona a quater way through the half went in to make the score 10-6 and it was converted as well which made the score 12-12. Nyngan kicked off and played hard tough footy with some cracker tackled made by the boys. Then Corey went in to make the score but unsuccessfully convert it 16-12. They kept playing hard footy and better results just kept coming with Kieran running in for his third and Luke also scoring and Corey converted it to put the tigers in front 28-12. The boys kept going until the buzzer. Coona ran in one late try to make it 28-18. As they scored it the buzzer went of. Horns beeped parents and family screaming in the grand stand and the boys were so happy. It was a hard fought game by both teams and they did very well. |

| LITTLE COMETS ON FIRE Little St Clair Comets were on fire this weekend, then take out the consolation Grand Final in the James Kilgour U6 Knockout. After competing in 6 games for the day, mostly against teams from the Parramatta District Junior League. Knocking out teams from the race one after the other. It came down to two teams from the Penrith District to take out this Grand Final with St Clair Comets downing fellow comrades Glenmore Park 40 - 26 to bring home the win. What a spectacular finish to great season with the boys finishing as one of the best U6 teams in the Penrith District in 2008. One of the clubs littlest teams with biggest lion hearts they have done St Clair proud this season. |

| JUNIOR WEIGHT FOR AGE GRAND FINALS The NSW Rugby League will take another step towards improving safety levels for junior players tomorrow when it concludes its 2008 Weight and Age carnivals. The carnivals are a forerunner to the NSWRL Academy introducing a weekend Weight and Age competition in 2009, reflecting the growing popularity of the initiative. The fifth and final Weight and Age Championship will be held at Norford Park and feature the Under-14/65kg and Under-16/75kg categories. This year’s carnivals are the result of ongoing research undertaken by the NSWRL and Westmead Children’s Hospital to ensure all junior players compete on a level playing field. Individual player weight measurements have been recorded throughout the year’s junior competitions to create accurate weight for age guidelines. So far Weight and Age Carnivals have been held in Sydney’s East, Penrith, Parramatta and Macarthur. FARRER will call on a number of 16-year-olds in tomorrow’s University Shield final against Sarah Redfern High School at Campbelltown Stadium but is confident the youngsters have what it takes to stand up in the biggest game of their schoolboy careers. Leading the way for the younger brigade is backrower Brett Jarrett, winger Ryan Pooley and hooker Cameron Rodgers, who has forced his way into the first XIII starting side this year on the back of some superb form. Co-coach Steve Cavanagh said the younger players were outstanding but it was the attitude of the older players that had really helped them flourish. “That’s to their credit but it’s also to the credit of the older boys,” he said. “The older boys have helped the younger ones and accepted them and they want to see them do well. “They’ve built a good ethos.” He said Melbourne Storm recruits Jarrett and Pooley had been impressive all year but Rodgers has also stepped up considerably. Halfback Jake Hawkins is also a big fan of Rodgers who is now part of a strong mid-field combination that includes Hawkins, Marcus Bower, Josh Dutton and captain Scott Blanch. “Marcus Bower at five-eighth is handy and Blanchy at fullback helps a lot,” Hawkins said. “Cameron Rodgers playing hooker, he’s been one of our best players this year. “At the start of the year I don’t think he had much interest in playing football but he’s been one of our best and I think he’ll go on to bigger and better things.” Hawkins (Melbourne), Blanch (Manly) and Dutton (Gold Coast) are all playing their last games for the school before going on to their respective NRL clubs. Blanch said they had come through the Farrer system to become the leaders of this year’s side but the Uni Shield final against Sarah Redfern was a springboard for the next crop of players to take on that role for next year and beyond. “It’ll be good experience for them,” Blanch said. “We’ve served our apprenticeships. “Hopefully they can build on what we’ve taught them.” Also included in the young brigade will be bench players like Matt Allwood who has also pushed his way into the squad thanks to great form at under 16s level. He, Rodgers and Pooley were all members of the Group 4 winning Farrer under 16s. The next generation will also be on show tomorrow when the Farrer under 14s face Cromer High in the Buckley Shield final which precedes the open decider. Both Farrer sides arrive in Sydney today and will train this afternoon for the last time. |

 CAIRNS Brothers added to their cache of junior titles, picking up the under-16 North Queensland Cowboys Cup at Barlow Park yesterday. Brothers beat Innisfail Leprechauns 42-16, setting the win up with a 24-0 opening half. Brothers added the Cup to the Cairns District Junior Rugby League title they won a fortnight ago and the under-15 ARL Development Cup state title they claimed last year. Brothers won through to yesterday’s final by beating Eacham DJRL champion Ravenshoe in last week’s qualifying final. Innisfail premiers Leprechauns earnt their place in the final after finishing on top after the round-robin system and secured direct passage to the final. Leprechauns pressured early but could not capitalise on their chances and Brothers made them pay in the final stages of the opening term. "We made a lot of mistakes early but the boys defended very well and then the last 20 minutes they put on a point a minute basically," Brothers coach John Clarke said. Brothers achieved the win without Queensland representative halfback Ben Hampton, who was injured yesterday, but had plenty of attacking options, with both five-eighth Nathan Kepa and lock Jeremy Yorkston scoring doubles. Innisfail coach Col Bradtke lamented his team’s inability to score early but was particularly proud of their efforts to fight back. "We had a couple of opportunities early there but we couldn’t control the ball and we didn’t stick to our plan and because we couldn’t capitalise, when you give Cairns Brothers opportunities after not putting them away, they make you pay for it," Bradtke said. "I was very proud of them in the second half. "That’s the way we usually play and it’s just a pity we couldn’t do it for the whole 60 minutes. "To lose to a class act like Cairns Brothers are, I’m still proud of the kids." Clarke was thrilled with his team’s ability to withstand pressure in the second half as Innisfail mounted its comeback. Story BY :  www.dragons.com.auThe Dragons Toyota Cup side have tonight advanced through to the Preliminary Final after defeating the Eels 23-22 in a thrilling and exciting match played at Suncorp Stadium. In a dramatic match played from end to end throughout it was a field goal from five-eighth Nathan Dureau that broke the deadlock with just 15 seconds remaining to seal the victory. It was the destructive Eels centre Tony Williams that was creating opportunities every time he carried the football. It was in the seventh minute where he took the ball forward and ran over the top of Nathan Dureau before promoting the ball on to his winger Taniela Lasalo who then drew the fullback Henry Raiwalui and passed the ball inside to Kris Keating who went in to score. Winger Nathan Gardner converted to put the Eels out to an early 6-nil lead. Just three minutes later the Dragons were able to register their first points of the afternoon through Captain John Kennedy. A penalty against the Eels for a second effort put the Dragons in good field position and on the first play a smart set play on the first tackle earned the try. Kennedy received the ball two passes wide and put a grubber in behind the Eels big outside backs which Raiwalui pounced on and when cover defence came over he got the ball inside to Kennedy to run round and score under the uprights. Nathan Dureau converted to level the score at 6-all. In the 30th minute a charge forward by front rower Trent Merrin layed the foundation and had the Eels on the back foot for the rest of the set. Attacking the Eels line on the last tackle Kennedy put a grubber through which kicked up and Keating fumbled handing Kennedy the ball and he dived over to score in the left hand corner. Dureau was unable to convert from the sideline leaving the Dragons 10-6 in front. Four minutes before half-time the Eels answered back levelling the score with their second try. On the last tackle the Eels kept the ball alive and were rewarded with Gardner going over to score. Mortimer was on the ground with no defenders on him and he flicked it out to Gardner who stepped inside two defenders to go over. He couldn’t convert his own try and both sides went to the half-time break locked at 10-all. It was an exciting start to the second half with the Dragons almost pulling of a play we have never seen before. Dureau caught ball from the kick-off and when he reached the defensive line he put a kick through for Raiwalui but couldn’t get a friendly bounce and the Eels came up with the football. Both sides had opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza with Gardner spilling the ball for the Eels with an open line and Dragons winger Daniel Nicastri was carried over the sideline just one metre from the line. The Eels were mounting pressure on the Dragons with the red and whites making errors in their own half giving the blue and gold ideal field position. The Dragons managed to survive the onslaught and went down the other end of the field to score and hit the front. Sam Morath earned a penalty after the Eels defenders held him down for too long in the ruck. From there the Dragons worked through their set and on the last Kennedy put a kick across that was batted back by Linnett and Rory O’Brien picked up the scraps to score. Dureau converted to put the Dragons in front 16-10 after 56 minutes.
On the next tackle the ball was sent out to the right and Gardner pulled off a beautiful flick pass which Mortimer took and went round to score. Williams took over the kicking duties and converted to bring match level again at 16-all. With 11 minutes remaining the deadlock was broken with Kennedy scoring his third try of the afternoon. Eels winger Gardner spilt the ball on his own 30m line handing the ball to the Dragons. Again on the last Kennedy put a grubber through for Raiwalui to chase and the Eels again fumbled the ball and Kennedy jumped on the ball to score. Dureau converted from in front to again put the Dragons in front 22-16. In a match that was tit-for-tat the Eels answered back in the 75th minute through lock forward Martin Lewis. In what looked to be a simple carry forward Lewis stepped off his left foot and went by Dureau and then went straight through Jake Marketo and went on to score. Williams converted to lock it up at 22-all. The remaining five minutes was thrilling and exciting with both sides having attempts at field goal but being unsuccessful after one attempt each.

 The Tigers U12’s went down to the big Coonamble side in there grand final. Our boys put up a brave effort but the size and class of the Coonamble side shone through when it mattered. The scores were locked at six-all at half-time but that was as close as we got, with Coonamble going on with the job in the second session to run our 26-6 victors. A big wrap to these boys and their coach Tim McClellan who has done a mighty job with these kids to get them where he did. Well done. | NORTH WEST AT STATE FINALS IN FORCE AFTER ROSS HILL’S VICTORY LEAGUE POWERHOUSE: INVERELL’S Ross Hill Public School won its way into next Tuesday’s Classic State PSSA Rugby League Knockout Final with an impressive 20-4 win over Umina in their semi-final clash at Kamilaroi Oval, Inverell yesterday. Ross Hill joins Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School’s Under 14 and Open sides in Buckley and University Shield finals at Campbelltown Stadium. The three teams give the North West region an outstanding representation in the three main Statewide school rugby league competitions. Yesterday, Ross Hill was outstanding for coach Preston Connors against Umina, manager Demelza Grant said. “They are a very good little side,” Grant said. “Preston does have them running well.” Yesterday Ronald Blair and Greg Brown were standouts, she said, in a great team performance. Both scored tries along with Jake Cardile and Dylan Lewis. Lewis and Cody Edmonds kicked goals for a side now off to its second State Knockout Final. “We were in the final two years ago,” Grant said. “Unfortunately we lost that one to Tathra.” Ross Hill started its State KO run with a tight 14-8 win over Inverell Public School and followed up with a 22-4 success against Glen Innes and then a close 22-20 win over Tamworth’s Hillvue Public School. A 29-10 win against Coonamble was followed by a 22-5 quarter-final over Urunga at Urunga before yesterday’s brilliant semi-final victory. While Farrer’s two league sides have made State finals, its Fester Shield Under 14 rugby union side was knocked out of its KO competition in yesterday’s semi-final at Farrer. Gosford’s St Edward’s College beat Farrer 28-nil and will play Dubbo’s St John’s in Sunday’s Fester Shield Final at Bathurst.  One foot, 30cm, was the difference between the Yass Magpies under 15s tasting premierships success and copping a narrow two-point grand final loss on the chin. The Magpies were gallant in their Grand Final at Canberra Stadium on Sunday, going down to the highly fancied South Tuggeranong Knights, 24-22. In a great game of rugby league, the young Magpies showed the large crowd of supporters tremendous spirit to fight to the end. With only seconds left on the clock, the Magpies worked the ball toward the line, only to be tackled inches short of the chalk when the full-time siren sounded. The underdogs started the grand final well, finding touch from the kick off. After strong runs from Ryan Alchin, James Paton and Ryan Greenwood, they kept the pressure on the Knights with repeated raids. A strong kick return from fullback Ben Pryor took the Magpies to within 15 metres of the Knights’ line. After good lead-up work from hooker Hussein Kassouh, Josh O’Brien jumped out of dummy half to the score Yass’ first try. O’Brien converted, extending the Magpies lead to six in the ninth minute. Hefty defence from the likes of Brendan Cooke, Brendan Maddern, Dylan Stephenson and Josh O’Brien kept the Knights’ forwards on the back foot. Persistence was the name of the game for the Knights, who levelled proceedings with a converted try after back-to-back sets at the ‘Pies. South Tuggeranong continued to work over the tiring Magpies, scoring their second try for the day. A solid ten minutes for the favourites saw the scoreboard reading 12-6 in the Knights’ favour. The Magpies struck a crucial blow in the shadows of half-time. A damaging run and off load from hard-running forward James Paton provided prop Ryan Alchin with a clear dash to the line. He made no mistake, nor did goal kicker Josh O’Brien, who put the Magpies on level terms, 12-12, at the break. Alchin’s last gasp try seemed to the give the young Magpies much-needed confidence for the second half. Fullback Ben Pryor powered over from close range to regain the lead for Yass. O’Brien was unable to convert from out wide, but, nonetheless, the black and white held a slight four-point advantage, 16 points to 12. It was developing into a see-sawing contest. The Knights were next to score, following an entertaining passage of play. With the successful conversions, ‘South Tuggers’ snatched back the Magpies’ short lived lead, to hold the ascendency 18-16. The healthy crowd was treated to an end-to-end game of football in the dying stages. Impact player Johnno Boulding was held up over the line after a barn-storming run. Emotions were beginning to run wild among Magpies’ supporters. With five minutes left on the clock, the Magpies mounted yet another raid on the Knights’ line. Fly-weight number 7 Dallas Dunley took the ball to the Knights’ defensive line, before stepping inwards and off loading on the outside to big centre Dylan Stephenson. The number three charged over and slammed the ball down, levelling the scores. Cool-headed five-eighth Josh O’Brien calmly slotted the conversion from out wide, giving the Magpies a narrow four-point lead with just minutes remaining. To the dismay of the Magpies’ supporters, the Knights found themselves in good field position and hit back with a try of their own. South Tuggeranong appeared to have snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. After receiving a penalty, the Magpies mounted one last raid. Hooker Kassouh took one final dart out of dummy-half, spun out of three tackles and stretched for the line. Desperate Knights’ defence held the determined Kassouh up as the full-time siren sounded in the background. With the Knights’ defensive line scattered, the Magpies needed just one further play to score. But it wasn’t to be. Although the under 15s went down, all spectators were treated to a great game of rugby league. The forwards, led by Kyle Merritt, Ryan Alchin, James Paton, Ryan Greenwood, Mitch Edwards, Tom Hall and Johnno Boulding were outstanding in both attack and defence. Hussein Kassouh was fantastic for the Magpies out of dummy-half, continually putting the Magpies on the front foot. Classy halves Josh O’Brien and Dallas Dunley were strong in defence and their organisation of the team and attacking plays was superb. The outside backs, led by rookie fullback Ben Pryor, along with the centres Dylan Stephenson and Brendan Cooke, and wingers Tim Regan and Brendan Maddern worked hard all day.  Parkes turned on a great day of junior rugby league football on Saturday at Pioneer Oval with three local teams making it to the grand finals. The under 10s finished runners-up against a very tough Red Bend team after going into extra time. The under 12s played against an exceptional Canowindra team and also finished as runners-up. The under 16s won over arch rivals Forbes with a score of 20 to 16. Well done to all teams. They have played some very tough football this season and have mostly shown themselves to be gracious in winning and in defeat. The Brian Collins Smash Repairs under 16s will now play in the Group XI grand final at Apex Oval in Dubbo this Saturday. More details and pictures should appear in Friday’s edition. |

The ASSRL was announcing the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Team of the Century. On arriving at the Powerhouse Musuem at Darling Harbour fairly early to avoid getting lost, this writer bumped into the Legendary Mr. Roy Masters. For the next half an hour we looked through the fantastic Rugby League 100 Years exibition that is on at the Powerhouse Musuem and all the great old photo's, and other cool footy stuff. Roy Masters was very interested in all these old photo's and we were looking at these blokes celebrating in the dressing room after a grand final, the photos was almost black & white it was so old, then suddenly Roy said, "hey, thats me", sure enough the young fella with his back to the camera was the coach, Roy Masters. That was funny. There was a fair bit of interest from the main stream media which was great to see them there supporting the Aussie Schoolboys. The Sunday Footy Show is doing something on Sunday about the Team of the Century, they interviewed current & former Schoolboys, which will be cool, so watch the Sunday Footy Show if you get the chance, along with Ch 10 and the Daily Tele and the Sydney Morning Herald and of course ourfootyteam.com were there on Thursday. Former Kangaroos including Danny Buderus, Greg Alexander and Bradley Clyde celebrated their Schoolboy roots today at the announcement of a star-studded Australian Secondary Schools Centenary Team.The greatest Australian Schoolboys team ever assembled saw Buderus named at hooker, Alexander at halfback and Clyde at lock, while McCarthy High’s Brad Fittler was named at five-eighth. Members from the inaugural 1972 Australian Schoolboys team, who went undefeated in their 13-match tour of Great Britain, were also in attendance at today’s event. From that team, Ian Schubert, Les Boyd and Craig Young gained selection, while coach Roy Masters spoke of his fond memories of that tour. Former Australia, NSW and Grantham High fullback Tim Brasher took the No.1 jersey while Cronulla’s favourite son Andrew Ettinghausen was picked on the wing. Balmain Tigers legend Paul Sironen partnered Narrabeen High’s Steve Menzies in the second row, while modern-day sensations Mark Gasnier, Justin Hodges, Tonie Carroll, Greg Inglis, Matthew Gidley and Brent Tate completed the lineup. “Schoolboy Rugby League is an important part of our game and to be named in this side, particularly alongside such amazing players, is a real honour,” former Patrician Brother Fairfield student Greg Alexander said today. “I have great memories playing for St Francis Xavier and when I was picked for the Australian Schoolboys I’ll never forget it because it was my first time in the green and gold colours,” Danny Buderus said. “The pride that came with pulling on the jumper, you were playing for Australia and it was a huge thrill for kids our age.” Current and former players and officials gathered at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum this morning to present team members with a commemorative Australian Schoolboys jersey provided by longtime sponsors Classic. Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League President Bruce Wallace said the Australian Schoolboys Centenary Team celebrated the ASSRL’s role in the development of future first-grade players. “For many players selection in an Australian Schoolboys side is the first step to greater heights,” Wallace said today. “The Test matches bring with them a lot of pressure and emotion and it’s a terrific way to introduce young players to representative football. “These players represent the very best to come through Australia’s secondary schools and we’re very proud to be able to announce a team of this calibre – the players in this team are all legends of the game.” Today’s event, hosted by ARL Development, brought together some of the game’s top officials including ARL Chief Executive Geoff Carr, NRL CEO David Gallop, ASSRL officials and life members, and representatives from several high schools around the state. Group 11 junior league is split into two divisions, Dubbo and Districts and Parkes and Districts. Each year the grand final winners from both divisions meet for a major grand final to decide which sides are best in the group. This year Dubbo has three South Dubbo and one Eastridge side through to the Group finals, proving again the dominance the city has in Group 11 rugby league. After a strong win in the Dubbo and Districts junior league competition grand final against PCYC, South Dubbo under-16s will return this Saturday for the group finals and coach Neil Milgate is feeling confident his side can come away with a win. “We should go alright, the boys are keen to play and they enjoy games like this,” Milgate said. The 16s have only met for training once this week since their grand final two weeks ago, however Milgate believes the week off will serve them well. “A lot of the boys have been flat out with school footy and other commitments so I think the rest will be good for them.” Milgate said he expected Parkes to be a strong side, however was confident his strong forward pack can lead his side to victory. “We have a very strong forward pack, good halved and we have pace out wide, so hopefully we can come away with a win.” The first match this Saturday will kick off at 11am with the 16s expected to be played about 3.30pm. This year Warren will also be represented in the under-12s division at the group finals. |

It was a case of lights, camera and plenty of Brothers action as the Blues dominated the Innisfail District Junior Rugby League grand finals. The Blues completed a dominant season, winning the under-12 decider against Babinda 58-14 to finish the year unbeaten. View junior league picture gallery. In the under-14 decider, Brothers won a sometimes fiery encounter over the Cowboys 34-16. For the first time in IDJRL history the under-16 grand final was played under lights, with Cowboys adjusting to the conditions early and taking a lead in the eighth minute. But Brothers fought back with two tries and held their lead for the rest of the match to run out 38-26 winners.  ON Saturday the Moruya-Tuross Sharks under 14s travelled to Narooma to compete in this year’s grand final against minor premiers the Tathra Eagles. In what was billed as the match of the day, neither side let up for the first blow of the whistle to the full-time siren. Tathra chose to run with the strong breeze in the first half and with neither side giving an inch in defence, it took a grubber kick from Tathra to give them a half time lead of 6-nil. The second half saw the Sharks use the wind to advantage, and turn the Tathra side around at every opportunity. Ten minutes into the second half, a well- executed catch and pass movement resulted in outstanding front rower Bodie Larden hitting the line, drawing the defence and passing to put full back Ryan Connor in for a try, which Connor converted to level the game at 6-all. Back on the attack, the Sharks were awarded a penalty after a dangerous tackle, which the ever-reliable Connor converted to give the Sharks the lead for the first time, 8-6. The never-say-die Tathra team had one last bite, with big Adam Elliott busting the Sharks with a chip and regather only to be pulled down 10m short with a great cover tackle by half back James Desaxe. For the next four full sets of tackles the gutsy Sharks refused to let the opposition cross their line, at times stopping them inches short. A mistake gave them the back the ball, which they smartly returned to the other end of the field. A handling mistake from the tiring Eagles resulted in a try to hard-working Sharks lock Dylan Johnson on the full time siren to see the proud young Sharks win the grand final 12-6. “This year’s success has come through the boys’ love of the game of rugby league which saw them train hard, play hard, and form into a team of great mates,” Sharks coach Paul Desaxe said. “With the help of their terrific parents, great president John Cornall and his committee and trainer Peter Johnson they have made everybody proud and are an asset to their club and town.” |

Engadine High School are again the Mitch Healey Cup Champions after todays good win against Wooloware High School at Shark Park. ENGADINE HS Engadine High School won the Mitch Healey Cup in 2007. ENGADINE HS WINNING STREAK CONTINUES Engadine had alot of early ball, and before long, Jaron Sharp found his way to the line. 4 - 0 Engadine up. Before long Woolooware had turned things around and Engadine found them selves on their heels, defending their line. Woolooware were set 4 a back line, and certain to score. Until halfback Bryce mistaked Jordan Dow for Reece, and 'Cheeza' raced almost the length of the field to score under the dot. 10 - 0 Engadine. Woolooware worked there way up the field due to some handling errors from the Enga boys. Some slack defence saw tommy find a hole and to put the ball over the line, just resisting dodgies chase. 10 - 6.Engadine This saw the Engadine boys under a bit of pressure and were looking for an answer, soon michael lichaa found a way through some scattered defence and scored in the corner. 16 - 6 Engadine.  Both sides seemed to have trouble settling into the match and handling errors were frequent in the face of two outstanding defensive lines. “We gave them enough ball in the first half for them to win three games,” said coach Howard Whan. “But our defence was fantastic.” It was thirteen minutes before a point was scored as defence dominated and it was the individual brilliance of Joel Jackson that brought a spectacular try from Glen’s side of halfway. Darting in then away and repeating the procedure, Jackson beat several defenders to score a memorable try. Soon after Jackson saved a try at the other end when he bundled Inverell’s Corey Baker into touch just short of the line. Inverell was then held up over the line by swarming Magpie defenders as the pressure continued. Inverell was penalized for a couple of strips and then Sam Kiehne was held up over the line. But half time was reached without addition to the score. The Magpies met renewed Inverell attack with the same resilience as in the first half but then Nick Ehsman put in a beautifully executed chip kick close to Inverell’s line and Jackson flew through to catch and score. Michael Adams landed the goal for a 10 - 0 lead. Enterprising play with the ball at his feet almost produced a try for Adams soon after but the Hawks defence held him up over the line, too. Inverell hooker Brodie Johnson got the Hawks back in the contest in the 51st minute with an excellent individual effort from close range. Alex Lavender slotted home a great conversion and Glen led 10 - 6 in the dying stages of an enthralling match. Both sides had slim chances of scoring in the final minutes but it was defence that dominated this match and those opportunities were quickly snuffed out. Nick Ehsman was again outstanding for Glen. The timing this lightweight five eighth brings to his tackling is superb and his heavy hits were a feature of the match. Sam Kiehne was excellent as was centre Adrian Wadley who went very close to scoring in the first half. Tom McCarney also had a strong game while replacements Tim Croft and Tobie Scheutz were outstanding off the bench. Scheutz made many strong runs and probably made more ground than any other forward in the match. Going through a season undefeated is an outstanding effort and this Glen Innes team deserves the highest accolades for their 2008 performance. |
