THE ACADEMIC Ashes will return home to the southern hemisphere after Australian Universities clinched a thrilling 10-6 win against Great Britain Universities in the deciding game of the 2007 series.
After losing 31-24 to the Poms four days earlier and leaving the Ashes precariously poised at 1-all, the Aussies fought through a growing injury toll for the vital win.
Burleigh’s Liam Capewell was again at the forefront of the victory, grabbing two tries to continue his prolific feats at all levels of football.

Capewell’s first try came from a pass from Easts forward Milton Jannusch, while his second came off a stunning break by Jamen McLeod.
Great Britain set up a nail-biting finish with a try close to the posts with 10 minutes remaining, disputed loudly by the Australian defence.
The Aussies took out their frustrations over the closing period with rugged tackling across the park, thwarting any chance of a British comeback.
It was just the atmosphere for a win-at-all-costs performance, played in torrential rain as the curtain-raiser to the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats v Huddersfield Giants Super League match.
Southern Cross University’s Shaun Davison was named Player of the match, while McLeod was voted Australian Player of the Series.
McLeod’s fellow New South Welshman Troy Woodley was the sponsor’s Player of the Series. |
