NQ COWBOYS MAKE BOYS' DAY
Mackay's - The Daily Mercury
MACKAY junior rugby league players rubbed shoulders with some of the Cowboys stars during the Laurie Spina Shield at Townsville at the weekend.

Seven Mackay teams were among 54 involved in the carnival, one of the largest junior league events in Australia.

Mackay’s teams included Magpies, Wests Tigers, Walkerston Wanderers, Proserpine/Whitsunday Brahmans, Sarina Crocodiles, Moranbah Miners and Northern Suburbs.

Sarina Crocs players Matthew Thompson, Sean Lucas and Nicholas Brownsey were among players who met Cowboys stars Willie Mason and Luke O’Donnell.

The Shield began in 1997 and is named after Laurie Spina, the North Queensland Cowboys’ first captain, who continues to be a tireless contributor to the development of junior rugby league in North Queensland.

NSW team Matraville Tigers defeated Brothers Townsville Red 24-0 in the grand final at Dairy Farmers Stadium on Saturday.

Matraville was the first interstate team to play in the carnival’s history, and made it a double when they also won the “Fastest Feet” relay, contested during half-time of the Cowboys v Sharks game on Saturday night.

Competition was extremely strong over the two-day carnival, as the more than 850 players put on a superb display for 1,500 spectators at the Brothers Rugby League Club grounds.

All coaches are educated on these rules at coaching courses and updates. Participation in these age groups is very important and should never be ignored.

BIG WEEKEND ... Gorden Tallis, second from left at rear, with the winning under-10 Central Gold team
CENTRAL GOLD COLLECT PLATE
Townsville Bulletin
TOWNSVILLE junior rugby league club Central Gold claimed the Reggie Matthew Memorial Plate after a comfortable 36-6 victory over Townsville Brothers White in the Gorden Tallis Cup last weekend.

The annual event saw 40 teams from across Queensland come together to compete for the Cup and also raise money for breast cancer in honour of Tallis's sister Jannita Dunn who passed away from the disease earlier this year.

It was a tiring carnival for the under-10 teams involved but the event provided players with friendly competition and lots of fun.

After solid performances throughout the event, Centrals Gold coach Gary Renton couldn't hold back the thrill of his team claiming the Reggie Matthew Memorial Plate.

''The boys were extremely excited (to win the plate) and played good footy throughout the weekend,'' Renton said.

''It was a very tiring competition, they played 11 games in all.

''There were some very hard games and we have a few injuries but it was a great team effort.''

The Centrals side was also able to take home a memento of what was a great weekend - the pink jersey they wore for the carnival. Renton organised the carnival jersey through sponsorship and presented them to his team at the start of the carnival.

''They were surprised, their eyes lit up when we pulled them out,'' Renton said.

''It something for them to keep from the carnival.''

All teams got involved with most teams wearing pink socks or pink shorts.

Adding to the under-10 players' excitement was a visit from ''the man'' Gorden Tallis who presented the kids with their winning shield.

STINGERS COACH LAUDS TEAM

Townsville STINGERS 201 Mal Meninga Cup Champions
THE tension around the ground was almost unbearable.

With the state final on the line and next to no time remaining on the clock, Townsville Stingers halfback Sam Foster lined up a difficult penalty kick.

If he kicked it, his team would become the Mal Meninga Cup state champions, and if he missed, they would have to continue their do-or-die battle in sudden death extra time.

Players from both teams watched the ball as it went over the posts, giving the Stingers a 26-24 victory, prompting celebrations from the north Queensland team and breaking the hearts of the valiant Norths Devils.

Stingers coach Todd Wilson said the contest was so close throughout the entire match that he was preparing for the game to enter extra time.

“Sam Foster was under amazing pressure to kick that goal, we were getting ready for golden point, but it went over,” Wilson said. “He focused well, it was fantastic.

“But it was a shame the game came down to a penalty kick in the end.”

The final, played at Langlands Park on Saturday, was almost a replay of last year’s decider – which the Norths Devils won in similar circumstances.

But this was to be the Stingers’ year and their victory saw the team remain undefeated throughout the entire competition.

But they were made to work hard by a Norths Devils team filled with talented performers and a determination to win.

“Both teams did quite well – it was 18-all at half-time,” Wilson said.

“But the boys worked really hard as a team, and I could not be prouder of them. They are an impressive group of kids who just love playing footy.”

Stingers five-eighth Nathan Norford scored two tries in the decider and was also awarded the man of the match award, but Wilson said his entire team stood up to the challenge.

“Through the middle Felise Kaufusi and Chris Grevsmuhl were great and Francis Veukiso gave us a lot of punch, but they all deserve a wrap,” he said.

“In the last two games especially, we went in to those games knowing we all had to be at our best, we don’t really have any game-breakers in the team.

“So it was about each of them knowing their jobs and having belief in themselves.

“We had a few boys who played in both of the finals last year, so I think that they were determined and motivated to go all the way this year.”

League great Mal Meninga was on hand to present the trophy to the Stingers after the match.

Norths DEVILS - 2010 Cyril Connell Cup Champions
Norths DEVILS - 2010 Cyril Connell Cup Champions
THE Norths Devils staged an incredible second-half fight back at Langlands Park on Saturday to claim this year’s Cyril Connell Cup title.

The Devils clinched the 26-24 win over the Gold Coast Blue side after scoring a try two minutes out from the fulltime siren and kicking the conversion.

However, it was an against the odds victory as Norths had entered the dressing rooms at half-time trailing the Gold Coast side by 14 points.

“You could say it was edge of your seat stuff,” victorious Norths coach Steve Hegarty said of the game.

“At half-time we were down 24-10, but we knew if we did what we had to do, the points would come and the opposition would tire because they are such a big team.”

Asked about what he said at half-time to motivate the team, Hegarty said it was all about staying positive.

“At half-time, I approached them positively, we had to identity where we had let ourselves down; we had to identify where we were falling down

“But there was no panic, we knew what we had to do and they believed they could still win it.”

And what was especially pleasing to the coach was the fact there were no real stand-out moments from individual players that turned the game in their favour, but rather the whole team stood up as one to take on the challenge.

“Everyone stood up at different times and they all did their jobs,” Hegarty said.

“We have our representative players in the team – but it was the players who might be considered the next level down, our unknowns, who stood up big time, especially in the second half.”

The Devils were one of the form teams throughout the Under 16s competition, coming in at second on the competition ladder, and Hegarty said their results reflected the sense of belief that was fostered within the team from day one.

“They had the belief that we were a fair shot, but we knew that we had to work hard,” he said.

“The competition was so strong, there were a lot of good teams and there was a lot of good footy played.”

NORTHS DEVILS 26 (Rhett Webster 2, Chris Frost, Alex Bishop, Adam Harris tries; Kane Zalewski 3 goals) def GOLD COAST BLUE 24 (Jordan Dulay, Dallas Wells, Dan Donovan, Carne Rhodes tries; Nathan Wilson 2, Zach Walsh 2 goals) at Langlands Park.
