THE 2006 INVINCIBLES
24/12 - THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN. WE"RE HOME. The Australian Secondary School Rugby League Squad are safe and back home in Australia.
It took 3 planes, the 1st few squad members rocked into town at just before 7 am this morning to a very warm welcome by family and friends.
More arrival news later, it's been a big day at the airport, the second plane with the boys arrived at about 11:50 and there was about a 40 minute delay while the Australian Quarantine Service cleaned everyone footy boots, good on ya Johnny. GOOD LUCK IN 2007 |
AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLBOYS CUT LOOSE, IN TOULOUSE
(Simon Huntly came up with the headline, it's great hey)
With all this talk of Shane Warne & his retirement in the media at the moment & with Warnie on the cusp of breaking the phenominal 700 wickets mark . Now that's impressive.
Records are also being broken in France and The UK this year with the Australian Schoolboys remaining UNDEFEATED on this 2006 Tour .
This Australian Schoolboys tour is the first Australian Squad to go undefeated on the entire Schoolboys Tour since 1999.
This is also the first team to win a Test series against the English Academy since 2001
The boys managed to rack up an impressive total of 284 points at an average of 40.5 pionts per game, they only concieded 106 pionts scored against them at an average of 15 pionts per game. Now that's impressive.
Yesterday, the Australians were invited to a local Toulouse High School. The team spent 4 hours in a beautiful ampitheatre answering questions from about 200 French kids, the questions were ranging from info on the tour, whats it like to play for Australia, how is it in Australia, and confirmed that Kangaroos do indeed bounce up and down the streets of Sydney, Brisbane and yes out at Tamworth way too.
The boys enjoyed this activity as it gave them all the opportunity to talk to people their own age and in an extreemly relaxed environment. |

AUSTRALIA WORLD CHAMPIONS AGAIN
Australia wins First Test 36- 22
ASSRL Press Release The Australian Schoolboys Rugby League side continued on its winning way on its current Tour of England, Wales and France with a win in the first test against the England Academy side.
The match was worthy of test match status and was very much "a match of two halves".
The English academy had the best of the first half with three tries off the back of Australian mistakes. The only points for the Aussies came off two kicks into the opponent's ingoal. The first was from a Chris Sandow kick that was fumbled by the winger with Joel Thompson diving on it for a 4 pointer.
The second in the 27th minute saw a try to winger Shannon Walker after a well placed kick by Mitchell Pearce to the same corner. The half time score was England 16-8 with the Aussies needing plenty to get back in the game especially with Joseph Paulo in the sin bin for 10 minutes ( including 7 minutes of the 2nd half).
Australia was under pressure for the first five minutes of the 2nd half courtesy of some errors.
However, a 60- metre try to Chris Lawrence out on the left edge sparked a remarkable period of try scoring for the Australian Schoolboys. Chris Sandow converted to bring the score back to 16-14.
Just 4 minutes later Obadiah Geia ran 35 metres to complete a good backline movement and scored wide out on the right side. With the conversion by Sandow the Australians were in front for the first time by 20-16.
Three minutes later a bust by centre Israel Folau and offload to winger Obadiah Geia saw him run 40 metres down a very narrow corridor to score a great wingers try. The score was now 24-16.
When the Aussies scored again in the 18th minute after a break by backrower Kevin Proctor who then passed to Shannon Walker who ran further 60 metres to score, it was obvious that the
Australian Schoolboys had gained supremacy. The conversion by Sandow took the score out to 30-16.
The Aussie were not yet finished with another 60 metre try just 4 minutes later, engineered by a line break from Mitchell Pearce sending hooker Nathan Strudwick on a 40 metre run to the line.
Another conversion by Sandow saw the Aussies with an commanding 36-16 lead.
A late try and conversion to the Academy saw the final score Australian Schoolboys 36 England Academy 22..our footy photo gallery (these 2 images are from assrl)

Coach Simon Huntly was extremely pleased with the overall effort and commented on the outstanding attacking ability of the team to be able to put on 5 tries in the space of just 12 minutes against a quality opposition in the English Academy.
However, he cautioned his side that the job was not yet complete and that the Academy would be even tougher opponents in the second test at Widnes next Friday night. (source : ASSRL Media Release)

COMMENT BY EMAIL : I have been following the AIS and Australian Schoolboys tours with interest.
I was just wondering about this article in the newspaper. Isn't the Australian Schoolboys team made of player who attend secondary schools in Australia whether they be of Australian, New Zealand or any other background?
Geyer, Kenny and Elias aren't exactly reliable and nothing from the ASSRL. It seems like tabloid journalism. regards Anthony (NOT Necessarily THE OPINION OF ourfootyteam.com:-) |

ENGLAND U18 ACADEMY V AUSTRALIAN HIGH SCHOOLS
09/12 SATURDAY night Australian time, the Grattan Stadium, Odsal, will host the first of a two-match International Series between the Australian Combined High Schools and the England U18 Academy. Kick Off 2.30pm Tickets are priced £5 adults and £1 juniors.
The Australian Combined High Schools return to these shores after a four-year absence - a return which has all the hallmarks of a revenge mission after the England Academy took the previous two Series, one at home, the other in the heart of Sydney.
It will be no surprise if the Australian scars run deep, after all, they are the guardians of a proud tradition - one Which started back in 1972
That was when the likes of future Kangaroos Royce Ayliffe, Les Boyd, Ian Schubert and Craig Young were amongst the stars of the very first Australian Combined High Schools Tour to Europe, demolishing all in their wake. Since then, over thirty ex-Australian Schoolboys have made the transition to the full Australian Test Team through the Combined High Schools system.
Head Coach Gary Chambers has selected a squad massively dominated by Lancashire players. His own Warrington Wolves has most players in the Squad, five of their youngsters having been picked; whilst St. Helens, who have been dominant at both Junior and Senior Academy, as well as Super League level this year, have a quartet of their players in the eighteen-man squad.
A trio from the Wigan Warriors, and one each from the Salford City Reds, Leigh Centurions and Widnes Vikings join a trio of Yorkshire-based players in the shape of two Hull FC players and one from the Bradford Bulls, completing a squad which will need to be at the top of their game. The return fixture taking place at the Halton Stadium, Widnes, on Friday, 15th. December, with a 7.30pm.kick-off. (source : bradford bulls)

Players like young Michael Maxwell (pictured) who is living his dream and playing for his country against his old Enemy Oi, Oi, Oi. Ha, Michael is a good player with good ball skills, he has a bit of toe and he is very proud that he represents his Nation in Rugby League and Michael aspires to play senior footy in the future possibly playing in the SuperLeague competition.
PLAYER PROFILE - Michael MAXWELL (Wath Brow Hornets, GB Community Lions, BARLA GB U18's) was born on 27th march 1989 and began playing Rugby at the age of 7 for Wath Brow Hornets.
He Still plays for this club at the open age level in the premier conference league, this is the highest level of amateur rugby in the Uk.
To be selected for Barla GB UNDER 18'S Michael had to go through a selection process which began with a local service area then a North of England selection and finally a regional carnival where players from across England, Scotland, and Wales participated.
An initial 25 man squad was selected.
Squad training and practice matches took place over the next 4 weeks. At the end of this period the final squad of 17 was selected to play against Australian Schoolboys at Copeland Stadium Whitehaven. (Source : Michael's Mum, Janice) |

The home of Superleague side the Bradford Bulls.

AUSSIE SCHOOLBOYS PUT ON TWO TRIES WITH WIL IN THE BIN
Match Report by Steve Manning - BRL / BARLA - Tuesday 05/12/06
The visitors though didn't have all their own way and their was only four points in it when winger Craig Sanby went in for the first of his brace on the half hour.
They then took the game to the Schoolboys but were undone by an individual piece of pace and skill by Sandow after an inventive chip over the defence by the Lions two minutes from half time.
Sandow took the ball in his own half and ran through the home defence, bamboozled the last line with superb footwork to go under the posts for a converted try and Sandow added the extras.
On the stroke of half time they were down to twelve as Matthews was shown a yellow card and whilst down in numbers scored two tries in a five minute spell.
Following a Schoolboys penalty Sandow flicked a pass out to centre Israel Folan who beat his opposite number Lee Williams to score a converted try on 41 minutes.
Sandow then chipped over on the last tackle took the ball and as he appeared smothered he got the ball out to Folan who passed on to winger Obadiah Geja who scored in the corner. Sandow landed a conversion and the visitors led 24 - 4.
The Lions were now playing catch up and went further behind six minutes later when superb handling down the line saw winger Shannon Walker cross the try line for the first of his brace.
The Schoolboys had to do some stout defending and Sanby scored his second try following a spell of pressure taking a cut out pass from scrum half Chris Brooke from the play the ball to make it 28-4.
The Schoolboys composed themselves scoring two tries in the last seven minutes. Following indiscipline by the home side they were awarded a penalty and from the play the ball the outstanding Mitchell Pearce attacked the line before passing the ball inside to Mannah who barged over from close range.
In the last attack of the game Sandow put a long two man cut out pass to Israel Folan who put an audacious back flip into the arms of Walker who scorched in at the corner to finish off the game 38-8.
The Schoolboys showed what a well oiled machine they are ahead of the two Tests against World Champions England Academy and will be ready for whatever is shown at them.
The Lions were a credit to the amateur game and augers well for the game in this country.
GB coach Carl Briscoe was generally satisfied with his teams second half performance. He added “ I’m very optimistic for the future of the players. I am very pleased with the teams efforts and they will get better with time. We will learn a lot from this match and the Australians clinical style of play.
Australia coach Simon Huntley added “ I thought we were a bit flat in the first half and didn’t execute very well. We had trouble acclimatizing, but we improved in the second half and I always felt we had enough options to win the game.”
Huntley also added “ I would like to thank Doncaster college for letting the team use their facilities prior to the game.” |

Roo kids are just Oz-some
Published in the News & Star on 29/11/2006 By Helen Thompson
BARLA GB Under-18 manager Joe Elliott has warned tonight’s clash with the Aussie Schoolboys will be the toughest yet.
The Schoolboys have been billed as the best ever to tour out of their country - which is a big standard to live up to, considering test players like Brad Fittler, Jamie Lyon and Mark Gasnier, all played in their ranks.
Elliott, of Whitehaven, will lead his BARLA side into action tonight at the newly revamped Cumbria Academy of Sport, at Hensingham (7.,30) pm) and he hopes a big local crowd will get behind the Great Britain side.
And he promises some great action and a few stars of the future on parade.
“We will have at least three West Cumbrians in the BARLA side and I hope that the local rugby fans will come along and get right behind them,” said Elliott.
“The Aussie Schoolboys say they’re the best touring side they’ve ever seen, better than the other teams who have travelled in the past so look out for some future stars on show.
“We are definitely going to be the underdogs from kick off and that is no disrespect to any of our lads playing but we did win our three warm-up matches against open age opposition to it will all come down to the game on the night.”
Kells duo Tyrone Dalton and Tony Burns, along with Wath Brow’s Michael Maxwell, are all in the final GB side. |
AUSSIE SCHOOLBOYS BRUSH BARLA ASIDE
Story by : P. Hodgson & ourfooty media
UPDATE : 9:00pm 30/11/06
MATCH REPORT & ACTION PHOTO'S TO FOLLOW
Two Queensland Schoolboys that play great team rugby League in every squad that they are involved in are now internationally tipped as 'stars of the future', claimed a hat trick this evening as the Australian Schoolboys eased to a 58-12 victory over BARLA Under 18s.
GOLD COAST TITANS 2007 signing and Junior Kangaroo Stand off Chris Sandow - who also landed six goals for a personal haul of 24 points - and winger Shannon Walker are among the names to watch for the future, with both players achieving their feats in a one-sided first half.
The healthy 1,500 crowd at the Cumbria Sports Stadium, Whitehaven, were treated to a blistering first 40 minutes by the Australian, with centre Peni Tagive also crossing as a 40-0 lead was established by the break.
BARLA hit back shortly after the restart when a bomb by scrum half Chris Foster - son of former Warrington mainstay Mark - led to winger James Haynes touching down, Foster adding the extras.
And the home side also closed the scoring when Foster intercepted Luke Capewell's pass, beating the defence in an 80-metre sprint and converting his own score.
Between-times, however, the Joeys had held sway in a match well controlled by Cumbrian whistler Gareth Hewer, with Capewell, Aiden Tolma and second row David Hala crossing the whitewash and scrum half Liam Foran adding each goal. | FULL MATCH REPORT |

The BARLA Under 18s welcome the Australian Schoolboys to the Copeland Stadium after a four year absence on these shores, looking towards a victory against our Antipodean friends.
On the last occasion the visitors won all three Tests with the scores getting closer as the series went on. They visited Australia two years ago and were heavily defeated but tonight heralds a new era, with a new coach in position and busy preparation for the squad for tonight’s game.
The new man at the helm is 42 year old Kelvin Lockett of Bradford Dudley Hill, who has plenty of coaching experience in the amateur and professional game.
With Peter Roe he won the National Conference League Championship before they both moved onto Halifax RLFC. A Championship and Premiership Final win saw them promoted to the First Division.. Learn More |

KANGAROOS JUST TOO MUCH BOUNCE FOR WALES 27/11 Wales were well beaten by some slick handling and some real gas as Australia ran out 68-14 winners.
MATCH REPORT : Blackwood RFC's first ever staging of a rugby league was a great success for the dual-code club with an estimated 600 fans packed into the Gwent-valleys ground. The crowd, predominantly Welsh, may not have seen their team win but were impressed by the quality of the match as the Australian Schoolboys enjoyed a successful start to their seven-match European tour.
Among the crowd were St. Helens chairman Eammon McMannus, former Great Britain star Andy Gregory as well as guest of honour, Councillor Elizabeth Aldworth, the mayor of the Caerphilly County Borough Council who was very impressed with the whole day.. Learn More |

AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLBOYS Vs WALES U 19's 26/11 THE WALES UNDER 19 RUGBY LEAGUE side face their toughest test of the year on Sunday when they face the highly rated Australian Schoolboys side at Blackwood RFC (kick-off 2.30pm).
For the Australians, this is their first outing in a gruelling seven-match tour of Europe and will be determined to start their campaign with a win.
But as they don’t leave Australia until Wednesday 22nd November, Wales Team Manager Ross Olney (pictured right) believes that his inexperienced but determined side can catch their potentially jet-lagged visitors on the hop.
Olney said: “We’ve got a pretty strong squad which I believe is one the best we’ve had at this age level. We’ve trained hard and are very positive about the match. We’ve put in a lot of hard work and the lads are determined to put in a good performance.”.. Learn More |
MAYOR IN WALES SENDS THANKS TO AUSSIE SCHOOLBOYS
Story & Photo By : ourfooty media
DURING last years successful Australian Schoolboys tour the team played the Wales Under 19's at Glan yr afon Park Blackwood.
Before the game both Captains introduced their teams to the Lady Major Cllr. Elizabeth Aldworth Mayor of Caerphilly Borough.
We sent Elizabeth a couple photos of her with the ASSRL boys before and also at the post game aussie celebrations.
This was a good decision by Elizabeth as it must have been gloomy in the Welsh sheds as they got smashed 68 - 14 in the first game of the tour by the Australians where Crrissy Sandow and Obe Geia ripped throught the Welsh line at will.
Elizabeth sent this message by email on Thursday. Cllr. Harry Andrews, Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council and myself as Mayor of the Caerphilly County Borough thoroughly enjoyed the Rugby League Match at Blackwood RFC and the hospitality following the game was excellent.
It was so kind of [ourfootyteam] to get in touch [and send] me the photographs, they have me down as Mayor of Bridgend in one shot………… I do hope their tour was successful and they particularly liked their visit to Wales.... Thanking you, Liz. |
The CARDIFF DEMONS RLFC will be supplying us with plenty of action photo's of the ASSRL Vs WALES Game for us all to enjoy. |
AIS/ARL UNDER 18's TOUR NEWS |
AUSSIES GET HOME WITH LAST MINUTE TRY 24/11 THE GREAT Britain U18 Community Lions played the better football for most of the match, but the Australian Institute of Sport got the money 18-14 in the first of two games on English soil.
Fresh from winning two tour games in France, the AIS squad snatched the result against the Lions with a last minute try to winger Kurt Beahan. The game at Rochedale began with Great Britain scoring two quick tries and racing to a 12-0 lead. AIS seemingly had no answer to the relentless onslaught.. Learn More |
AUSSIES TOO STRONG FOR FRENCH IN SECOND HALF SCORING SPREE 19/11 AIS /ARL head coach Brian Johnson asked his young team to show composure during the second half of a sometimes spiteful match against the French under 19 team at St Gaudens, in southern France. And the Aussie team responded with seven second half tries to wrap up their second win on French soil by 52 to 10. |
