GIO S'BOYS CUP QUARTER FINAL 2
Story BY : LARS ROY
PATRICIAN BROTHERS V ERINDALE
Patrician Brothers Blacktown will take on Erindale College in the second GIO Schoolboys Cup quarterfinal, at Sportingbet Stadium, Tuesday 19 August.
This match will follow Endeavour Sports High and Farrer MAHS which is scheduled to kick off at 11am.
The last time Patrician Brothers and Erindale met were in the pool stages with Patrician Brothers coming out convincing 28-0 victors at Kippax Oval.
Erindale head coach, Matt Adams, said they have learnt a great deal from that loss and have taken the time to re-evaluate areas in their game.
“It's probably an advantage getting to play them [Patrician Brothers] again,” said Adams.
“Ball security was an issue in the first game, so hopefully we can address that this game.”
The main focus for Adams building from the group stages however, is the importance of starting out strong.
“We've had to come from behind in a lot of games,” said Adams.
“We're keen to getting off to a good start and hopefully score a few tries early, which will put them in a position they haven't been in.”
Patrician Brothers head coach, Greg Beacroft, is expecting a much improved Erindale side, which will feature the return of a number of key players that did not play in that loss.
“They [Erindale College] have good players all over the field,” said Beacroft.
“They're the improvers in the competition who are playing with a lot of confidence. They're going to be hard to beat.”
Despite a staggered football calendar, that has seen most of Patrician Brothers play against each other in various rep teams, Beacroft believes finals footy will help galvanize the team.
“I think when it comes down to the finals, it's all about desire and opportunity and doing the one percenters,” said Beacroft.
“We're excited by the opportunity to play. There are a few boys carrying niggling injuries at this time of year, but we're all looking forward to the challenge.”
For that very reason, Adams is not ruling out the possibility of late team changes but is expecting all of Patrician Brothers' key men to step up.
“They [Patrician Brothers] are strong all over the paddock, but particularly their front rowers' ability to create second phase play is a threat,” said Adams.
“It's important that we do our best to win the ruck. If they get a roll on it'll be tough to handle.
If Erindale are to do so, captain Kalani Going, and front rower Leon Tupuola need to be at their very best.
A Canberra Raiders junior representative, Tupuola was the ‘GIO Most Trusted Player' against Westfields last game, scoring a second half double in a thrilling come from behind victory. |
Palm Beach Currumbin SHS V The Hills SHS
Tuesday the 19th of August will see Kougari Oval in Wynnum Manly play host to two GIO Schoolboy Cup Quarter Final matches.
Wavell State High School will come up against Matraville Sports High School. While Palm Beach Currumbin Sports High School meet The Hills Sports High School.
Palm Beach Currumbin Sports High School who have performed very well so far in the GIO Schoolboy Cup competition will be out to stop the undefeated The Hills Sports High School.
Palm Beach Currumbin Coach, Geoff Bagnall has been extremely impressed with the way that his school has performed this season.
“I have been delighted with how the boys have played this year and now we are looking to continue that good form into the knock out stages.” Said Bagnall.
Bagnall also believes that the battle up the middle between the forwards will be key on the day as both sides try to best one another.
“I think it's going to come down to a battle between the forwards. If our forwards can get on top early we can take the game away from them. We have a good pack and they know the job that they have to do.
If all goes to plan in the middle we can get the ball to some of our outside backs who know how to get the ball over the line.” Said Bagnall.
Palm Beach Currumbin are a loaded with talent, it's hard to pin point who will be the key for the side.
“Our captain Keegan Hipgrave has made the Australian Schoolboys side, twins Dylan and Daymeric Pelo are always dangerous and our halves Jed Cartwright and Jack Cook are class.” Said Bagnall.
The Hills Sports High School head into this match undefeated in the GIO Schoolboy Cup competition but know they will have to be at their best on Tuesday.
The Hills Sports High School Coach, Scott Jones has been happy with the way his side has performed but believes there is improvement to be made.
“It looks great that we have gone through undefeated but I feel like we haven't hit our peak yet. We haven't seen much of Palm Beach but we know that we'll have to be at our best to get the win.” Said Jones.
The trip up to Queensland to play allows the boys to gain a great experience and memory from the GIO Schoolboy Cup competition.
“Its great a opportunity for the boys to have and its something that should live long in the memory. Especially if we come away with a positive result.” Said Jones
The Hills also boast a very talented young side, with a great mix of size and speed across the park.
“Our fullback Daniel Brown has been unreal for us this season. Halfback Jake Toby is always looking dangerous in attack and second rower Sean Walpole was man of the match in our last game and will be looking for a big game again.” Said Jones
The winner of this match will advance to the GIO Schoolboy Cup Semi Finals, which are to be played during the last week of August. |

GIO CUP RESULTS: X-POOL FINALS
Story & Photo By : NRL Media
THE Queensland Cross Pool Finals of the GIO Cup were played earlier at BMD Kougari this week with Wavell State High and Palm Beach Currumbin winning through to the National Quarter Finals on Tuesday next week.
Read the match wraps from the Queensland games below:
Wavell State High v St Brendan’s Yeppoon
WAVELL State High School have continued their impressive run in the 2014 GIO Schoolboy Cup with a dominant display against St Brendan’s Yeppoon, defeating the visitors 58-6 at Kougari Oval, Wynnum.
Wavell started well and were first on the board when a quick play the ball from prop Riley Leota allowed quick ball movement to Michael Molo who forced his way over to score. The next 10 minutes were an arm wrestle, with both sides looking to assert their authority on the match. It was not until the 18th minute that winger Blake Blomley crossed for Wavell’s second.
Down 12-0, St Brendan’s hit back three minutes later when centre Maia Raihe took an interception 40m the other way to score, with Jarmaine Willet adding the extras. Wavell scored once more just before halftime, when Logan Spaander put Molo into space before the prop was taken down just short of the line. A quick play the ball allowed Wavell to spread the ball wide for Keenan Yorston to score.
The 16-6 halftime score gave St Brendan’s the opportunity for a comeback, however when Yorston crossed for his second and Riley Leota went in shortly after, Wavell’s lead had blown out to 22 points with only five minutes played in the second half.
And the tries kept coming for Wavell, with back rower Alex Albert joining in on the action diving over to score from a sweep play on the last. Molo ran off a Joshua Fauid short pass to score under the posts for his second, while Blake Blomley, Kalemb Hart and Patrick Akauola all added their names to the scorer’s column. Wavell’s Joshua Fauid was voted GIO’s Most Trusted Player.

KIRWAN STATE HIGH v PALM BEACH CURRUMBIN STATE HIGH
THE second game of the day saw two Queensland rugby league school heavyweights compete in what was expected to be an enthralling encounter.
Kirwan were leaving no stone unturned in travelling to Brisbane two days early to ensure they had the best preparation possible, however Palm Beach proved too strong running out 22-4 victors.
Palm Beach were first on the scoreboard in the 13th minute when halfback Jack Cook sliced through the Kirwan defence from 10m out.
Two minutes later and they were in once more, when hooker Koby Annand raced from dummy half and drew the tackle to send second rower Daymeric Pelo into space to score.
With Kirwan defence looking shaky Annand was at it once more, this time jumping right from dummy half to hit a rampaging Keegan Hipgrave who was able to muscle his way over, before Sam Ross added the extras to send Palm Beach Currumbin into the break with a 14-0 lead.
Kirwan came out of the blocks to start the second half, eager to prove their means. After repeated attacking sets and some dogged Palm Beach defence, it was only a matter of time however before Kirwan made the breakthrough.
It was Jai Wisley who did the damage, turning inside onto a flick pass to run through the defence and score, giving Kirwan hope with 14 minutes remaining.
It was not to be however, with Shezia Compain scoring in the left corner soon after to round out the scoring and give Palm Beach Currumbin the 22-4 victory.
Captain Keegan Hipgrave was named the GIO Most Trusted Player.

ST DOMINIC’S COLLEGE V CHIFLEY COLLEGE
GIO TROPHY CITY FINAL
Saint Dominic’s College, Kingswood will progress into the GIO Trophy Final after defeating Chifley College, 32-10 at St Mary’s Stadium on Wednesday.
With the score at 12-6 at the break, Saint Dominic’s rolled up their sleeves and went on with the job, to come away with a convincing 20-4 second half performance.
The first try of the game went to Saint Dominic’s captain, Jack Nelson, only five minutes in, who leapt spectacularly to take and plant a Nathan Cleary cross-field kick.
Fullback, Chris Thomas, added the extras to give Saint Dominic’s the perfect start to the semi.
James Jackson was next to cross for Saint Dominic’s only three minutes later, after receiving a great pass by Kurt Falls close to the line.
Chifley College persevered however through bruising defence and was later rewarded in the 15th minute, after a strong tackle from Ului Vakauta forced the ball loose close to the line, gifting a try to Brydon Ramien.
Despite Jack Nelson being sent to the sin bin, Saint Dominic’s received a penalty in Chifley territory for a shoulder charge and opted to take the two points. They successfully converted six minutes out from the break.
The last five minutes of the first half saw opportunities for both sides to post points, but terrific scrambling defence, particularly by Chifley, denied any changes to the score.
Mimicking the start of the match, Jack Nelson crossed for his second try five minutes into the second half.
The try was again courtesy of Nathan Cleary, whose late footwork and offload resulted in a fairly simple run to the line for Nelson.
Cleary was next on the score sheet, only four minutes later, after scoring a terrific solo try of his own close to the line.
He then turned his interchange teammate, Jack Williams, under which paved a path to the try line, scoring with only 10 minutes remaining.
With the score at 30-6, Chris Thomas extended Saint Dominic’s lead past four converted tries, after he kicked yet another penalty goal, leaving Thomas with an impressive 6/7 with the boot.
Chifley had the last say however, scoring a consolation try in the last minute of the game through a powerful surge by Ului Vakauta.
Vakauta’s acceleration combined with a big ‘don’t argue’ was too much for sliding edge defenders 10 metres out from the line.
In a great display from St Dominic’s their halfback Nathan Cleary was awarded the GIO Most trusted player.
St Dominic’s head coach and former student, Rodney Peake, is now only one win away from lifting the GIO Schoolboy Trophy, after taking out the ‘Arrive Alive’ cup in 2003 as a player.

THE HILLS SPORTS HS & FARRER MAHS ADVANCE TO THE GIO CUP QUARTER FINALS
Illawarra Sports High vs The Hills Sports High
Story & Photo By Jackson Russell (playnrl.com)
The Hills Sports High School continued their undefeated streak in the GIO Schoolboy Cup competition, with a 42-16 win over Illawarra Sports High School at Berkeley Sports Ground.
Illawarra started the match strongly and after exchanges from both sides Center Raymond Hardy touchdown to give his side an early lead. Number 6 Paora Kemp converted to put his side up 6-0.
The early try sparked the Hills side into life with livewire Fullback Daniel Brown getting over close to the line to even the scores up at 6 all.
With the match evenly poised Hills had a scrum 20 meters out from their own line. Brown took the ball himself from the scrum to sprint 80 meters untouched for a 12-6 lead.
As we approached halftime Hills looked to extend their lead. They got that chance when big man Richard Amone barged his way over to take his to the break 18-6 up.
The second half started with The Hills on the attack through Hooker Matthew Price and they were soon over again as the ball went to Center Leighton Tali for a 24-6 lead.
Illawarra weren’t done in this game though as Hooker Brody Hawkins dived over from close range to make it 24-12 and spark hopes of a revival.
This wasn’t to be the case however as speedy number 7 Jake Toby made a break followed by a kick and chase to get a four pointer and put his side 30-12 up.
The Hills then found quick tries through Matthew Price and Lachlan Attwood to run away with the game with a 42-12 lead.
Illawarra found the try line late when Thomas Maloney went in out wide to finish the match at 42-16.
The GIO Most Trusted Player was awarded to The Hills Secondrower, Sean Walpole. Who laid the platform for his side with strong runs and tough defence.
The loss ended Illawarra Sports High School’s run in the competition. Their Captain, Luke Chalker, said they were outplayed in the defeat but there is strong signs for the future.
“The loss today hurt, we were outplayed in every area.” Said Chalker.
“We will comeback stronger next year. We are still a young side and the majority of us will be back next year.” Said Chalker.
For The Hills Sports High School they move on to the finals stages of the GIO Schoolboy Cup competition.
The finals stages will be a step up again for The Hills side but Walpole is confident that his team can do the job.
“It’s a big step for us but we can handle it. We have to be on our game the whole time and not just in patches, we have been guilty of that a few times this season.” Said Walpole.

FARRER MAHS vs ST GREGORY’S COLLEGE
Story & Photo By : ROY LARS playnrl.com
Farrer MAHS will progress through to the GIO Schoolboy Cup National Qaurter Finals with an impressive win over St Gregory’s Campbelltown 26 points to 10, in front of a very strong home crowd.
St Greg’s had to make the long trip up to Tamworth and it seemed the long travel took its toll on St Greg’s with Farrer coming out firing in the first half. With local legend and former Farrer student and Canberra Raiders Captain Alan Tounge presenting the jerseys to the young Farrer players his words of inspiration certainly had the home team firing early.
Farrer jumped out to an early lead with Zac Faulkner crashing over from close range for an early try. Tom Say converted the try to take Farrer out to a 6-0 lead early.
Farrer went further ahead in the 12th minute through a try to winger Matt Thompson, who intercepted a pass from a St Greg’s backline play to race away 60m to score under the posts. Tom Say made it two from two with the boot and Farrer were brimming with confidence with an early 12-0 lead.
St Greg’s finally got on the scoreboard through fullback Toa Mata’fa who was able to score out-wide off an offload from centre Jesse Jackson to anrrow the scoreline to 12-4.
St Greg’s were in again not long after through hooker Jayden Siekiewicz who scooted out of dummy half from 5m out and was able to push his way over the tryline. With the conversion successful from Toa Mata’fa St Greg’s were right back in the game.
With three minutes to play in the first half Farrer’s centre Tye Barry was able to race away 20m to score out wide after a mistake from St Greg’s working it out of their own half. This try gave the home team a handy 16-10 lead going into the break.
The first 10 minutes of the second half was dominated by St Greg’s with coach Pat Newell obviously letting his players know at half time that they needed to lift and play with some enthusiasm. This was evident early in the second half with St Greg’s throwing everything they had at the Farrer defence.
Farrer were able to hold strong and in the 12th minute of the second half Five Eight Josh Bermingham put up a towering kick near the posts with the ball coming down for fullback Hayden Loughrey who dashed away from 10m out to score next to the posts.
Farrer were in again 5mins later with another kick from five-eight Josh Bermingham who chipped over the defensive line finding some grass with St Greg’s fullback Toa Mata’fa looking to have the ball covered until a terrible bounce seen the ball bounce away toward the try-line with Farrer centre Tye Barry and Toa in a race for the ball touching the ball down simultaneously for the benefit of the doubt going to the attacking team and Tye grabbing his second try. Farrer were now leading 26-10 and with the home crowd getting louder Farrer seemed to have the upper hand.
With only 10mins to play St Greg’s started to play expansive football but Farrer’s defensive line was able to repel the onslaught from St Greg’s holding on to win 26 points to10.
In what was a great result for Farrer to advance to the Quarter Finals after only their third year in the top tier competition.
Farrer’s captain Tom Say was extremely happy with the result and said that “our goal at the start of the competition was to reach the quarter finals and for the players to achieve this was a great result for the school.”
In a disappointing loss for St Greg’s Australian Schoolboy representative and St Greg’s captain Tristian Nisbett said “It wasn’t the result we wanted and were were hoping to come up here and win today, we now need to go back and work on part’s of our game, and our focus will now be on the CCC Cup and MCS Finals.”
Farrer MAHS 26 (Tries: Tye Barry 2, Zac Faulkner, Hayden Loughrey & Matt Thompson. Goal kicker: Thomas Say 3 from 5) defeated St Gregory’s Campbelltown 10 (Tries: Toa Mata’fa & Jayden Sienkiewicz. Goal kicker: Toa Mata’fa 1 from 2) at John Simpson Oval, Tammworth. |

FARRER Memorial Agricultural High School might have started with an error but the side regrouped, realigned and repelled St Gregory’s Campbelltown to register a 26-10 win and earn a quarter-final berth in the GIO Schoolboy Cup at Farrer’s John Simpson Oval yesterday.
Talented young fullback Hayden Loughrey and tall winger Matt Thompson combined to spill St Greg’s first kick from their own half to place the home side under early pressure.
However, the Chris Oxford-coached Farrer side overcame that early fumble to repel the opening raids from their Sydney opponents and posted the first two tries of the game.
Inspirational prop Zac Faulkner, just back from a tour of Queensland with the NSW Country Under 18s, crashed over early and then Thompson made up for his early error to snatch an intercept and race 60m to score for a 12-nil lead.
St Greg’s fought back though, scoring twice in a matter of minutes as they marched up the paddock after some more Farrer errors.
Trailing 12-10, the visitors made one error they regretted, allowing young five-eighth Josh Bermingham to scoop up the ball and send centre Tye Barry across for the first of his two tries.
Behind 16-10 at halftime , St Greg’s went close to scoring from the first set of six in the second half but the scrambling Farrer defence kept the visitors at bay.
Farrer could have easily added a couple more tries too early in the second half when second-rower Matt Merrick was ruled to have made a double movement in scoring and then winger Cameron Howard was pulled back from a forward pass fired to him by Bermingham.
They weren’t denied however when a Bermingham bomb was dropped by tall St Greg’s fullback Toa Mata’Fa.
Loughrey swooped to race over and score.
Barry’s second try came from another Bermingham chip kick that rolled past Mata’Fa for the centre to pounce.
Just to emphasise the tremendous, defensive desperation, Farrer scrambled in defence to stop big St Greg’s centre Jesse Jackson from scoring after the bell.
“We defended really well,” Oxford said.
“We won that game on the back of our defence.
“Coming into the game we’d allowed 10 points a game and to allow just 10 again was outstanding.
“I’m proud of the effort.
“We scrambled well.
“ We had a good start, got a couple of lucky turnovers and an intercept and had a good wind at our backs in the second half.”
Props Faulkner and Brad Johnston led the way for Farrer, halves Bermingham and skipper Tom Say also played strongly and steered the side well, with 15-year-old Loughrey a spark at the back.
Backrowers Merrick, Jack Ticehurst and Ryan Horton were also strong, hooker Corey Manicaros controlled the ruck well but red-headed lock, Angus McTavish, was probably Farrer’s best.
He won plaudits from his coach and skipper for his heavy workload in attack and defence, the small number 13 bringing down his bigger St Greg’s opponents with regularity and zest.
Farrer plays its GIO Schoolboy quarter-final in mid-August but goes to Grafton next week to play South Grafton High in the University Shield.

ENDEAVOUR SPORTS TO STRONG FOR ALL SAINTS MAITLAND
Story By : Nathan Beuman
Photo's By : steve monty
Endeavour Sports have opened their 2014 GIO Schoolboys Cup campaign with a bang, trouncing the visiting All Saints Maitland 38-6 in a dominant display at Remondis Stadium.
Despite All Saints having much of the ball in the opening exchanges, the lose of Dominic Fiorenza to the sin bin early on in the piece, and a hat trick to Endeavour centre John Olive made the task for Maitland to great to overcome.
“Losing (Dominic Fiorenza) just before half time definitely made it a bit harder,” said All Saints Maitland captain Joseph Morris.
“They snuck in a few more tries, but it just comes down to completion work… We just gave them too much ball down their end.”
Having weathered an attacking onslaught by Maitland in the opening ten minutes of the game, Endeavour were able to capitalise off the back of a penalty, when John Olive put Billy Lennon away for the opening points of the game.
From the left touchline, Jamayne Isaako was unable to add the extras, leaving the score at 4-0 after 13 minutes.
When Fiorenza was sent to the sin bin midway through the first half, things started to unravel for All Saints, with Endeavour exploiting the man advantage to run in two tries in ten minutes to lay the platform for a dominant win at home.
John Olive started the tirade in the 17th minute, scoring directly from a scrum ten metres out from the All Saints line to put the score at 8-0 following Isaako’s missed conversion.
Endeavour were in again just three minutes later, when fullback Ryan Cummins sliced straight up the middle, before passing it off to a trailing Rhys Davies, with the halfback scampering away for the try.
Isaako converted from directly in front, kicking the ball on top of the southern grandstand to extend Endeavour’s lead to 14-0 after 21 minutes.
The home side managed to get in one more blow before the break, when Olive made a break after the siren, running away to score under the posts to give Endeavour a commanding 20-0 half time lead.
“It was just based around the whole team really, laying the platform, making it easier for us outside backs to score,” said the GIO Most Trusted Player John Olive.
As if the prospect of coming back from 20 points down wasn’t tough enough, All Saints lost five-eight Callen Edwards to a shoulder injury just three minutes in to the second half.
Three tries in the space of 12 minutes to Endeavour’s John Olive, Luciano Leilua and Jamayne Isaako had the home side up 32-0 with just under a quarter of an hour remaining.
All Saints managed to bag a late consolation try when Maitland captain Joseph Morris shifted the ball right, finding fullback Thomas Rinkin, who dived over to being the score back to 32-6 following Morris’s conversion.
The flurry of tries to Endeavour outside backs continued just before full time, when winger Curtis Scott scored on the overlap out on the right hand flank, securing a 38-6 win for his side.
While the result wasn’t the way he would have liked his team to close out their season, All Saints Maitland captain Joseph Morris was pleased with how his side performed in their inaugural season in the GIO Cup.
“It was a positive season. We have come close in two of our three games, we won one of them and the first (against Matraville Sports High), we got done on the bell,” said Morris.
Hopefully the boys can get up for next season as well.”
While Maitland’s GIO Cup season may have come to an end for 2014, Endeavour Sports have clashes with Holy Cross College and Matraville Sports High scheduled for the start of next term. |

All Saints Maitland v Holy Cross College Ryde
All Saints Maitland have secured their first ever win in the GIO Schoolboys Cup competition, with a stunning 24-20 victory over Holy Cross College Ryde at Cessnock Sportsground.
Despite being down 16-0 at half-time, All Saints came out firing after the break, scoring four converted tries in 15 minutes to wrap up an unlikely win.
It was Holy Cross who took advantage of their first real opportunity with the ball following a penalty, when Bayley Sironen put Christian Tarabey through a gap close to the All Saints line.
Justin Aboumelhem stepped up and converted the try to give Ryde a 6-0 lead after only seven minutes.
Holy Cross were in again ten minutes later, when Jack Wheelhouse threw a dummy close to the line, fooling the All Saints markers before the hooker dived over to extend their lead out to 12-0 following Abomelhem’s conversion.
Just when it looked as though All Saints were starting to build to their first try of the afternoon, Holy Cross right side centre Dwayne Peters intercepted a long looping pass to run 80 metres the other way to score in the corner five minutes before half time.
In what would prove to be a pivotal play, it was a strong chase by Maitland that denied Peters the opportunity to run the ball any further infield, leaving Abomelhem with a sideline conversion, which he pushed right, giving Holy Cross a commanding 16-0 half time lead.
Ryde began the second half in the worst possible fashion, with a knock on from the opening kickoff, starting a series of errors and poor discipline that would allow All Saints to work their way back into the game.
It was Maitland captain Joseph Morris who scored his sides first points of the afternoon, diving over off the back of some second phase play, before Brock Lamb slotted the conversion to bring the home side to within ten points with still 20 minutes remaining.
With the ensuing kickoff going out on the full, Maitland were gifted more great field position, when Lamb sliced his way through the Holy Cross line, before converting his own try to put the score at 16-12 after 42 minutes.
This time it was a penalty that gave Maitland a full set right on Holy Cross’s line, allowing Luke Higgins to score All Saints third try in six minutes.
Lamb continued his perfect afternoon with the boot, giving Maitland their first lead with 16 minutes left on the clock.
Maitland sliced through a tiring Holy Cross line once again in the 48th minute, before the GIO Most Trusted Player and All Saints captain Joseph Morris went over to score his second try of the game.
As cool as you like, Lamb stepped up and nailed the kick at goal to extend the All Saints lead out to 24-16.
Ryde weren’t done with just yet though, with Esan Marsters barging his way over in the 56th minute off the back of a brilliant ball from five-eighth Jean-Louis Jones, setting up a nail biting final couple of minutes.
With Justin Aboumelhem’s conversion being waved away, it meant Holy Cross were forced to score a try to level the scores up.
Despite having one more crack at the All Saints line, the home sides defence stuck strong, holding out Ryde to clinch an incredible 24-20 win.
To add insult to injury, Holy Cross hooker and try scorer Jack Wheelhouse was forced from the field in the 55th minute with what appeared to be a serious knee injury.
Holy Cross won’t have long to think about the loss, with their next game coming this Tuesday (24th June) against Matraville Sports High at Erskinville Oval at 1pm.
Meanwhile, All Saints will have to make their first trip away from home, when they take on Endeavor Sports High at Remondis Stadium next Thursday (26th June) at 1pm. |
ERINDALE TO STRONG FOR HUNTER SPORTS AT GIO STADIUM
Story BY : JACKSON RUSSELL
Erindale College kept their hopes of moving into the knock out stages of the GIO Schoolboy Cup alive with a big 42-0 win over Hunter Sports High School on Friday afternoon at GIO Stadium in Canberra.
The match served as an undercard for the National Rugby League match that was to be played later that night between the Canberra Raiders and Canterbury Bulldogs. This gave the High School boys the fantastic opportunity to play at a professional stadium, for some players this was the first time they were able to do this.
The match started off slowly as both sides felt each other out. Early penalties gave both schools attacking chances and Erindale took their first opportunity with open arms was Captain Kalani Going crossed for his side to take a 6-0 lead.
Erindale looked to extend on their lead when five-eight George House split the line but the Hunter Sports defence rallied to keep their line safe.
Hunter Sports moved the ball up field, threatening the Erindale side however as they spread the ball wide Erindale center John White swooped, intercepting the ball to go the length of the field and extend the score to 10-0.
The half closed out with Erindale again finding the try line this time through Lock Jesse Martin and John White calmly converted to see Erindale go in 16-0 up at the break.
The second half started with Erindale on the scoreboard immediately when front rower Leon Tupuola forced his way over next to the posts to make it 22-0.
From this point on Erindale looked to put Hunter Sports to the sword with massive winger Sione Afemui going over in the corner after quick hands from the Erindale backs.
At 26-0 Erindale weren’t done as a move identical to the play that saw Afemui go over was again on show. This time center Jai Lyons dived over for a well deserved try and when John White converted from the sideline Erindale were 32-0 up.
With 5 minutes remaining Erindale still had another 2 tries in them with Sione Afemui getting his second after coming in and barging through the middle of the Hunter defence.
In the closing stages White crossed for his second try of the afternoon to give Erindale College a 42-0 win.
Erindale’s Captain Kalani Going took home $ the GIO Most Trusted Player in a great performance leading his side.
For Hunter Sports High School it was a tough afternoon, which saw them fight hard after big road trip down to the nations capital. Hunter were down on personnel missing three star players who did not make the trip down due to previous commitments.
Despite this they can hold there heads high with particularly strong performances from fullback Ngangarra Barker, five-eighth Jayden Hocking and lock Luke Marks.
Erindale were very pleased with their win, bouncing back after a first round defeat to Patrician Brothers.
“We gained a lot of confidence after the last game and knew that we would put in big performance today. It gives us a big boost for our next game in Sydney against Westfield Sports.” Erindale’s captain Kalani Going after the match.
“It was an awesome experience getting the chance to play at GIO Stadium before an NRL match. The school had a lot of students come up and watch which really lifted us for the match.”
In Round Three, Hunter Sports play Patrician Brothers Blacktown in their final game. The young side has put in encouraging performances this year, which has seen them gain a lot of big game experience. Expect them to return next year as a major threat.
Erindale head to Sydney to face Westfield Sports High School in what promises to be a cracking match that will see the winner advance to the knock out stages of the GIO Schoolboys Cup Competition. |

MATCH PREVIEW: ERINDALE COLLEGE V HUNTER SPORTS HIGH
Story By : Jackson Russell (Raiders.com.au)
GIO Schoolboy Cup v Erindale 3
Tomorrow see's Erindale College host Hunter Sports High School in the second round of the GIO Schoolboys Cup at GIO Stadium Canberra at 3:30pm.
The match will be serving as an undercard game for the NRL match between the Canberra Raiders and the Canterbury Bulldogs played at 7:45pm that night.
The Schoolboy teams have been provided this wonderful experience to play on a NRL Game Day by major sponsor of the competition and also stadium sponsor GIO Insurance.
Both sides are coming off opening round losses, and are looking for a positive result to get their GIO Schoolboys Cup run back on track.
Last start Erindale College came up against competition heavy weights Patrician Brothers Blacktown and went down 28-0 in what was a courageous showing from the much younger side at Kippax Oval on June 4th.
Despite this loss Erindale have taken a lot away from the match and their performance. Which will no doubt serve them well coming up against Hunter Sports High School.
“We are feeling very good after that match. All boys are lot more confident and very proud of their performance. We are a young team and to play the way we did against Patrician Brothers was awesome.” Erindale College Captain Kalani Going.
Erindale College will also be boosted by the fact that they have four players coming back from SG Ball commitments to play in Friday's game.
“Having those boys coming back is big for us. It gives us a lot more experience. Getting to run out onto GIO Stadium in front of our friends and family will be a great feeling” Said Going
Hunter Sports High School faced past winners Westfield Sports High School at Campbelltown Stadium last week and after leading 16-6 at halftime eventually went down 36-16.
“We looked great in the first half but we are a young side and that's where Westfield got on top of us in the second half and pulled us back in. Fatigue was probably the biggest issue, we know where we went wrong and have talked about the areas that need improving” Said Hunter Sports coach Justin Stewart.
There is no doubt that Hunter Sports will be looking to rectify that result against Erindale College on Friday afternoon. The task however becomes harder with Hunter missing key players.
“It's a big blow for us, we will be missing our missing our fullback, halfback and one of our front rowers with prior commitments. But it's the chance for some other boys to step up on what will be a tough road trip but a great experience for the boys.”
“To have GIO insurance support schoolboy football is fantastic and we thank them for providing this opportunity to these kids” Said Stewart.
Erindale Graduate and Raiders star Jack Wighton said he has great memories of his Erindale days.
“Playing for Erindale was the first chance for me to get some game time when I arrived in Canberra to start playing with the Raiders and I loved the experience,” Wighton said. “It's a great school and they have a proud rugby league history.”
Another former Erindale star Paul Vaughan said he'll always have fond memories of his time at Erindale and wished the team luck for Friday night.
“Being from Canberra it was a huge positive for me to be able to go to school at Erindale and play footy for them. I'll always have great memories of my days at Erindale.” Vaughan said. “I wish the boys all the best of luck for tomorrow.” |

KEEBRA PARK TOO GOOD FOR PATRICIAN BROTHERS
Story By : Laura Judd.
Photo's By :
Another year of the GIO Schoolboys Cup drew to a close today after a stunning win by Keebra Park State High School 28-4 over Patrician Brothers Blacktown at WIN Jubilee Oval, Kogarah.
In the state of origin style clash, 2012 champions Patrician Brothers were no match for the Queenslanders from Keebra Park on the Gold Coast.
Keebra Park captain Lamar Manuel-Liolevave was just amazed at his team's efforts.
“We worked so hard all year for just 60 minutes of footy,” he said.
“I'm just happy we came out with the result in the end.”
The win topped off Keebra Park's successful year, with the schoolboy's rugby league side winning all four Queensland schoolboy titles and a national championship.
Manuel-Liolevave said it all came down to pride and drive for their school.
“It was the drive to win,” he said.
“The boys were all hyped and just ready to go out there and put their body on the line for the jersey so I think that's what won us the game today.”
A brilliant performance by five-eight Te-Marie Martin, scoring one try and setting up several others, saw him awarded with the GIO Most Trusted Player of the grand final match alongside teammate and centre Marion Seve who was awarded the Peter Sterling Player of the Year medal.
But Keebra Park were not the only standouts of the day.
Patrician Brother's Blacktown dug deep in front of a large supportive home crowd but were just unable to break the defensive line of their opponents.
Sione Utia-Katoa, Co-Captain of the Patrician Brother's side said today just wasn't their day.
“I'm pretty disappointed”, he said.
“ We know we put a lot effort out there, we done our best so that's all we can ask for”
“They just wanted it more than us.”
With both teams losing many of their players in year 12, both captains, Manuel-Liolevave and Tonga, agreed that today wasn't all about winning but giving the younger players valuable football experience for next year and beyond.
“We gained confidence and experience for the young ones for next year,” Tonga said.
“It gives our school the drive for next year for younger kids to keep coming to our school,” Manuel-Liolevave said.
“That's what it's all about, just influencing younger kids to follow their dreams whether it's for footy or anything else.” |
