KEEBRA PARK TOO GOOD FOR PATRICIAN BROTHERS
Story By : Laura Judd.
Photo's By :
Another year of the GIO Schoolboys Cup drew to a close today after a stunning win by Keebra Park State High School 28-4 over Patrician Brothers Blacktown at WIN Jubilee Oval, Kogarah.
In the state of origin style clash, 2012 champions Patrician Brothers were no match for the Queenslanders from Keebra Park on the Gold Coast.
Keebra Park captain Lamar Manuel-Liolevave was just amazed at his team's efforts.
“We worked so hard all year for just 60 minutes of footy,” he said.
“I'm just happy we came out with the result in the end.”
The win topped off Keebra Park's successful year, with the schoolboy's rugby league side winning all four Queensland schoolboy titles and a national championship.
Manuel-Liolevave said it all came down to pride and drive for their school.
“It was the drive to win,” he said.
“The boys were all hyped and just ready to go out there and put their body on the line for the jersey so I think that's what won us the game today.”
A brilliant performance by five-eight Te-Marie Martin, scoring one try and setting up several others, saw him awarded with the GIO Most Trusted Player of the grand final match alongside teammate and centre Marion Seve who was awarded the Peter Sterling Player of the Year medal.
But Keebra Park were not the only standouts of the day.
Patrician Brother's Blacktown dug deep in front of a large supportive home crowd but were just unable to break the defensive line of their opponents.
Sione Utia-Katoa, Co-Captain of the Patrician Brother's side said today just wasn't their day.
“I'm pretty disappointed”, he said.
“ We know we put a lot effort out there, we done our best so that's all we can ask for”
“They just wanted it more than us.”
With both teams losing many of their players in year 12, both captains, Manuel-Liolevave and Tonga, agreed that today wasn't all about winning but giving the younger players valuable football experience for next year and beyond.
“We gained confidence and experience for the young ones for next year,” Tonga said.
“It gives our school the drive for next year for younger kids to keep coming to our school,” Manuel-Liolevave said.
“That's what it's all about, just influencing younger kids to follow their dreams whether it's for footy or anything else.” |
THE BATTLE OF HASTINGS
Story & Photo's By : Darren Hart Keebra Park / OurFootyTeam
While not quite as epic as its namesake event in 1066, Keebra Park fought its very own battle at Pizzey Park today with Illawarra Sports high lead by St George Holden Cup player, Jackson Hastings proving to be a difficult opponent to overcome.
Hastings and fellow Australian schoolboys squad member Tom Freebairn formed the backbone of an Illawarra side who had successfully overcome Sydney schools, Hunter, Bass and Holy Cross to take their place in the Gio Schoolboys Cup Semi and were the form team coming into the clash.
Keebra had downed, Marsden, Kirwan and St Brendans in do or die knockouts and although considered underdogs for this encounter had developed a reputation for fitness and determination.
Illawarra spent the morning playing beach cricket, topping up their tans and working of the parmiganas from the night before but they were under no illusions that the holiday was over when Keebra crossed the stripe early in the game to open the scoring.
They replied with a try of their own soon after and the tit for tat scoring saw the Keebra enter the sheds with an 18-12 lead at halftime.
The second stanza opened along much the same lines and an arm wrestle ensued with neither side able to really stamp their authority however a 45th minute flurry of Keebra pressure saw them push out to a 32-18 lead and put the game beyond Illawarra's reach.
A knock on over the line and a Liolavave try called back for a forward pass would have seen the score blow out but as the final siren sounded, the 38-18 final score line was indicative of a game that featured some passages of open play with both sides happy to push the pass out wide.
Keebra's Australian centre Marion Seve bagged a double while Jamion Iroa went one better with a hat trick.
Kelly Tate was relentless in defence and Lamar Liolavave was awarded the GIO "Most Trusted Player" award.
Keebra have a short turn around before the Grand Final clash with Patrician Brothers Blacktown next Wednesday (18th) at Kogarah oval in Sydney. Special thanks to Burleigh Leagues for hosting this event. |

ST MARY’S ALL SAINTS MAITLAND HAS TAKEN OUT THE 2013 GIO SCHOOLBOYS TROPHY
Story By : ARLC Media
Photo's By :
St Mary’s All Saints Maitland has taken out the 2013 GIO Schoolboys Trophy in spectacular style for the second year in a row at Leichhardt Oval today.
In a close scoring game between All Saints and Eagle Vale High School the win came down to a field goal in the final moments by All Saints halfback and GIO Most Trusted player of the match Brock Lamb.
“It was lucky I guess,” Lamb said of his match winning field goal from 40m out.
“It was a tough game but to get a win like that it’s pretty awesome.”
Lamb’s teammate and All Saints captain, Rhys Clacherty, said their fitness and discipline was the difference between them and the Eagle Vale boys in the end.
“I think we are just fitter and managed to tire them out and that’s what got them in the end,” he said.
“Two years, it’s awesome, I’ve never experienced this before and the boys love it.”
Eagle Vale High put up a fight taking the lead at several points in the game, forcing the Maitland side to work hard for their win.
“We played a good game but it’s just our discipline in defence that let us down a lot,” Eagle Vale captain Jett Karam said.
Having lost by only four points last year, to suffer another close defeat Karam said was the hardest bit to deal with.
“It’s very disappointing, I’d rather lose by 12 points than to lose by one, it’s just disappointing,” he said.
ST MARY’S ALL SAINTS MAITLAND 35 (Charles Wood Elliot Jennings 2 tries, Eli Levido, Harry Hoffman, Lincoln Smith; Brock Lamb 5/6 goals and 1 field goal) def EAGLE VALE HS 34 (John Fomai, Veiru Mapesone 2 tries, Richard Parkinson, Little-Bay Maurangi, Junior Tuliakiono; Jack Miller 4/5 goals, Veiru Mapesone 1/1 goals). |

gio SCHOOLBOY TROPHY GRAND FINAL PREVIEW
Reigning champions All Saints College Maitland will go head-to-head with Eagle Vale High School tomorrow in the NSW final of the GIO Schoolboy Trophy.
The rematch of last year's 32-28 Grand Final will kick-off at 11:30 am at Leichhardt Oval.
Both teams are heading into the final undefeated but Brad Melville, coach of All Saints College, is confident his team can win back to back titles.
“Our form has been steadily improving over the year and we are playing pretty well at the moment,” Melville said.
“If we play at our best, we are very confident that we can win.”
All Saints made history by becoming the first Hunter Valley team to win the GIO Schoolboy Trophy.
“We are very proud of our country heritage and to be the first team to win from our region was a great honour,” Melville said.
“The team took great confidence out of last year's win and they are keen to prove themselves again against quality opposition.”
However the boys from Eagle Vale are not prepared to go down without a fight, etching for a win after such a narrow defeat last year.
“It will mean a lot to the boy's if we can get the win on Wednesday, this will be our 3rd time in four years of trying since the competition changed its format back in 2010,” Eagle Vale coach Kent Lawrence said.
“As the saying goes ‘you have to lose a grand final before you win one' and I am hoping this will be our year.”
Both teams have learnt from last year's final and are focused on ways of improving to secure themselves a victory.
Both teams will sporting several representative players with the game expected to be as as fierce as ever when both teams battle déjà vu to be named the winners of the prestigious Schoolboy's Trophy. |

KEEBRA PARK FIGHTBACK AS COACH CALLS FOR TITLE EFFORT Story By : Emma Greenwood Gold Coast BULLETIN
KEEBRA Park mentor Greg Lenton has warned his side will have to lift their game if they are to have a chance of winning the GIO Cup national title.
Keebra snared back-to-back Queensland titles in the prestigious schoolboys rugby league competition with their 28-14 win against St Brendan's College at Wynnum yesterday.
While Keebra pushed the lead out to as much as 28-6 in the second half, Lenton was unimpressed with an undisciplined first-half performance and let his troops know in no uncertain terms at the break that their performance had been lacklustre.
"We decided that we just wouldn't stick to everything we learnt this year and we played some terrible football," a frank Lenton said.
"We were very lucky that a couple of things went our way and we got out of it."
Keebra led their Yeppoon-based rivals 12-6 at half-time but squandered several scoring chances in some "terrible decisions" -- something that surprised Lenton given his team's regular good attitude, discipline and work ethic.
And the veteran coach did not spare his charges' feelings at the break.
The frank discussion led to a second-half turnaround, with front-rower JJ Felise leading the way, laying the platform for his team to follow.
Hooker Junior Marsters was named man of the match for his service around the ruck, while Braydon McMahon, Lamar Liolavave, Talor Walters, Jamion Iroa and Marion Seve scored tries to set up a national semi-final showdown against Illawarra Sports High at Pizzey Park on September 10.
Lenton praised the individual efforts of players such as Felise for "pulling the game out of the fire".
"In this particular game, we didn't work for the win," he said.
"We worked defensively but we weren't smart with our win.
"If we go out and play that sort of football against Illawarra Sports High, it will be all over.
"Without any doubt whatsoever, we will be punished very badly." |

ST BRENDAN'S BOYS HAVE A POINT TO PROVE AT THE STATE CUP
Story & Photo By : Michelle Curran Rockhamptons The Morning BULLETIN
UPDATE 4.05PM: Keebra Park State High School from the Gold Coast have defeated St. Brendans College Yeppoon 28-14 in the grand final of the GIO Cup.
Keebra Park claimed three tries in the last seven minutes of the clash to blow out the score of what was a largely defensive game.
St Brendans try scorers were Cooper Bambling and Lindsay Jarrett who claimed two.
5am: COOPER Bambling and his St Brendan's first XIII teammates will be singing Redemption Song as they prepare for today's GIO Cup State final.
The 17-year-old skipper of the Yeppoon school's top rugby side was part of the team which was knocked out of the semi-finals last year by Keebra Park State High School in the same competition.
Keebra Park went on to win the state final and today St Brendan's will face the reigning champions at Kougari Oval.
"We lost the Confraternity Cup to Ignatius Park College earlier this year and since that, winning this competition has been our main goal," Bambling said.
"We were the underdogs last week against Palm Beach Currumbin in the semis...it was a real hard game - they were a lot bigger and it tested us."
But St Brendan's dug deep to defeat the visitors at Rockhampton's Browne Park and the team was expecting a similar reception from Keebra Park.
"Last week was a good workout before the final and gave us a bit of confidence going forward ... Keebra Park are a lot bigger than us, they're strong but we should be fitter," the skipper said.
For the few boys still in the team from last year, winning the semi and making the grand final was a bit of redemption, he said
Bambling was hoping to end his final year at school on a high, before heading to NRL club North Queensland Cowboys next year after being scouted to play for the 20s. The Terry Hansen-coached St Brendan's first XIII, left for Brisbane yesterday to play today at 3.30pm at Kougari Oval. |
KEEBRA DOWN KIRWAN IN QLD SEMI-FINAL
Story By : Darren Hart - KPRL
Tuesday afternoon saw ist placed South Qld seed Keebra Park take on second placed North Qld qualifier in the Queensland semi-final of the GIO CUP at a windy Kougari oval.
Keebra started the game well and after thwarting a series of opening attacking plays by Kirwan, posted the first try of the game after a bustling run by centre Marion Seve.
Kirwan replied with a try of their own and another Seve try to Keebra, saw the Keebra boys head to the sheds with a 10 - 4 lead.
The second half saw Keebra run with the wind and flurry of tries soon extended the Gold coasters lead to 22 - 4.
Kirwan dug deep in the middle of the second stanza and came up with the next points to leave the game poised for a big finish at 22 - 10. Towards the back end of the match however, the superior fitness of Keebra shone through as the added two more scores to give a final result of 34 - 10.
The game was played in great spirit, hard and fast and both teams did their respective schools proud.
The win sets up what promises to be a cracking game between Keebra and Rockhampton heavy weights St Brendans next Tuesday (20th August)

FIGHTBACK FALLS SHORT: EARLY BLITZ BY VISITORS WOUNDS FARRER
Story & Photo By : Tamworths Northern Daily LEADER
FARRER Memorial Agricultural High School’s open rugby league side paid the penalty for a slow start against a misfiring Westfields Sports High School losing their GIO Schoolboy Cup 18-16 game to their Sydney visitors at Scully Park yesterday.
Westfields led 18-nil after 15 minutes and looked like they might run away with the game but to Farrer’s credit the Damien Kenniff-coached side fought back.
Trailing 18-4 at half time after Dylan Manicaros scored from running a good and gallant angle Farrer scored two more second half tries.
Halfback Tom Say split the Westfields defence wide apart in a 70m break before stopping and turning to send centre Zack Leonard diving into the corner.
With just 15 seconds left Manicaros then sparked to score his second try with a neat step and acceleration. He converted both second half tries but he lamented his first half miss, which hit the posts.
“My missed goal kick cost us,” the talented lock, who also plays first grade for North Tamworth, said.
He was one of Farrer’s best though, along with centre Zack Leonard, halfback Say and rangy secondrower Ryan Horton.
Westfields coach Tony Wignell was disappointed with his side’s display after starting so well through tries from props Sinapati Solia and Lewis Tucker and winger Mark Griffiths.
Halfback Jordie Hedges converted all three for an 18-nil lead.
“It was a good experience for the boys to come up here,” Wignell said.
“We did play well in the first half for 15 minutes. But I was pretty disappointed with the way we finished.
“Credit to Farrer though they stuck at it. We always knew it was going to be tough.”
Westfields has had wins over Hills and Farrer but lost to Blacktown in their GIO Schoolboy Cup pool.
Prop Solia, lock Manu Lavalau, a nephew of Parramatta’s NRL prop Fui Fui Moi Moi, and centre
Jermaine Mata-Leifi were best for Westfields with Lavalau awarded the $100 GIO man of the match.
Farrer coach Damien Kenniff was delighted with his side’s performance.
“It was a good effort,” Kenniff told The Leader.
“At this level you learn some hard lessons and you pay for your little mistakes. We invited them back into our half too many times in that first half.
“But they came back so well. Callum Hayne (fullback) injured an ankle in the first half and should have come off but stayed on and played well. He’s just a tough young guy. We promoted the ball better in the second half.”
Kenniff expects Hayne to be right for tomorrow’s University Shield game against Sydney’s Arthur Phillip High at Farrer (11am kickoff).
It is a short turn around but if they can reproduce the defensive effort and streamline their attack then they will ensure Arthur Phillip High have a tough Uni Shield day.
WESTFIELDS 18 (Sinapati Solia, Mark Griffiths, Lewis Tucker tries, Jordie Hedges 3gls) d FARRER 16 (Dylan Manicaros 2, Zack Leonard tries, Manicaros 2gls).
FARRER (possible squad to play Arthur Phillip High 11am tomorrow at John Simpson Field, Farrer): 1 Callum Hayne, 2 Trent Eather, 3 Zack Leonard, 4 Zander Smith, 5 Jessie Thomson, 6 Ty Barry, 7 Tim Say, 8 Jake Cocking, 9 Angus McTavish, 10 Brad Johnston, 11 Liam Zell, 12 Ryan Horton, 13 Dylan Manicaros, 14 Tyler Harris, 15 Lachlan Collins, 16 Matt Burling, 17 Troy Martin, 18 Zac Faulkner, 19 Lyle Haughton. BASS HIGH SCHOOL FIGHTS TO THE END AGAINST HUNTER SPORTS HIGH IN GIO SCHOOLBOY CUP MATCH AT CAMPBELLTOWN STADIUM
Story & Photo By : Adam Vidler Canterbury-Bankstown Express
A BLISTERING finish enabled the Bass High team to leave the field with pride in their tough 30-24 Schoolboy Cup loss to Hunter Sports High at Campbelltown Stadium on Wednesday.
The match was a significant improvement on Bass High's previous 30-8 loss to Illawarra Sports High at WIN Stadium earlier this month.
Bass High captain Ali Allouche said he was proud of his side's fight to the finish, which included a two-try comeback in the final four minutes.
"Towards the end we, as a team, didn't want to go out like that so we just put our heads up and kept going forward," Allouche said.
"We just didn't complete enough sets and that's what got us in the end."
Bass High will play their final Schoolboy Cup pool match against Holy Cross College.
The venue and time of the match was yet to be determined by the NRL.
The Schoolboy Cup is played across NSW, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and the ACT. |

PATRICIAN BROTHERS ON TRACK FOR GIO SCHOOLBOYS CUP TITLE
Story & Photo By : Chris Georgakopoulos Blacktown Advocate
Patrician Brothers Blacktown showed their intent on winning back-to-back GIO Schoolboys Cup titles with a convincing 34-16 victory over Westfields Sports High last Wednesday.
The competition pits the best schoolboy rugby league teams from NSW, ACT, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia against each other.
After trailing 10-6 at half time, a strong second half led to Brothers scoring four tries within 10 minutes after the break to lead them to victory at New Era Stadium, Cabramatta.
Westfields were never able to recover from the onslaught, scoring two consolation tries late in the match.
Patrician Brothers captain and man of the match Sione Utia-Katoa said his side's dominant second half was thanks to a big half time spray.
``(The coaching staff) said to come out and start doing the simple things right - run hard, tackle hard and we'll get there at the end of the day,'' he said.
Hundreds of Patrican Brothers students also made the trip to watch their team compete.
Utia-Katoa said the support by the rest of the school and the student body is lifting them toward winning consecutive titles.
``It's great to have the support and with them behind us, if we put in the hard work I think we can do it,'' he said.
Westfields skipper Jordan Hedges paid tribute to his classy opponents. |

Erindale College in Canberra has put in a strong performance in their opening GIO Cup match |
ERINDALE COLLEGE NARROWLY LOSE IN ROUND 1 OF THE GIO SCHOOLBOYS CUP
Story & Photo By : Canberra RAIDERS
Erindale College in Canberra has put in a strong performance in their opening GIO Cup match. Going down narrowly to Matraville High 24-16.
Erindale went into the match knowing that Matraville have been runners-up in three of the past five grand finals and, in their last encounter against Erindale in 2011, Matraville cruised to a 54-6 win.
Erindale started the more positive camping down in the Matraville half for the opening 10 minutes before crossing through Erindale winger Michael Geiger.
But as Matraville slowly worked into the contest they drew level after Erindale missed a penalty conversion, with Matraville capitalising on some errors by the Canberra side.
Just before half time Matraville had back to back sets on the Canberra line and eventually it became too much with a handy kick into the in goal was fumbled and Matraville scored with the half time siren in the back ground.
After the break Erindale came out very enthused and posted another ty after a strong break by centre John White, who cleverly drew the Matraville fullback to put his winger Michael Geiger away for his second try of the game.
In a great second half both side’s battled away, but Matraville capitalised on Erindale’s errors and ran out narrow winners 24-16.
A strong performance from Canberra Raiders Sg Ball prop Leon Tupuola had him win Erindales Player’s player.
After the match Erindale coach Matt Adams said “I’m so proud of our boys today, At the start of this game we asked the boys to compete in the contest, and as the score line shows we did more than that”
Erindale Captain Cleveland Mcghie said “We are trying to create a positive culture here at Erindale and the performance the boys showed today was outstanding. We can go into our next game really positive knowing we can compete against tough competition”
Erindale’s next match in the Gio Cup will be against St Gregory’s Campbelltown on Wednesday 19th June, at Campbelltown Stadium |

KEEBRA PUT 80 ON COOMBABAH
Story : Darren Hart KPRL
It sounds more like a cricket score but the 80-0 drubbing handed out by Keebra Park to Coombabah in the Alan Langer Trophy was an indication of what is possible when a team gels.
With Wests Tigers NRL and Holden Cup coaches watching on from the stands, Keebra were ruthless as they ran in try after try against fellow Gold Coasters Coombabah who at best were very poor.
Other results saw Wavell firm as a team to beat after a win over Marsden and Palm Beach downing Cav Road.
In other news the final of the Titans Cup will see Keebra's Open third team up against PBC.
In school sport the 13Bs secured a grand final win and will now face a cross over final against the larger Gold Coast schools. |

PATRICIAN BROTHERS BLACKTOWN ANNIHILATE FARRER AGRICULTURAL HIGH IN GIO SCHOOLBOYS CUP
Story & Photo By : Peter Theodosiou
A STRONG attacking performance by Patrician Brothers' College, Blacktown, resulted in an 86-0 thumping of Tamworth's Farrer Agricultural High School in the opening round of the GIO Schoolboys Cup this morning.
The tournament's defending champions scored 17 tries including hat tricks to Dallin Watene-Zelezniak and Sione Tonga as well as a double to David Sheridan.
The win set up a clash with Fairfield's Westfields Sports High School in three weeks at New Era Stadium, Cabramatta.
Westfields overcame Hills Sports High School, Seven Hills, in their opening round match.
Despite the big win, Patrician Brothers' coach Peter Ross said his team needed to improve before their upcoming matches.
“We expected a tougher game today, they bought a bit of experience to the game today but again it's on our home turf here in front of our school crowd,” Ross said.
“There are some important areas that we need to improve on, I was very happy with the zero score for them but there are some areas we need to work on against the likes of Westfields.
If we make the basic errors like we did today, Westfields will make us pay.”
The squad includes six players from last year's winning team including injured bolter Robert Jennings, younger brother of Sydney Roosters star Michael Jennings.
The school secured the cup in September with a 32-6 win against Caringbah's Endeavour Sports High School.
Five members of that team were selected for the Australian Schoolboys side.
“We have retained a lot of the back line from last year but we did have a number of key injuries like Robert Jennings,” Ross said.
“The forwards are working hard, they are enthusiastic and a young pack, a lot of them are 17 but they have been waiting their time. We probably don't have the big names like we did last year, I can't see us getting five Australian schoolboys again but they are willing and a tight knit group and I think that is going to hold them in good stead.” |
