2006 ARRIVE ALIVE CUP GRAND FINAL |
VICTORY AT THE DEATH 23/09 |
Endeavour SHS win the ARRIVE ALIVE CUP in dying minutes.
With the scores locked at 6 - ALL at half time the second half was a battle of the backs.
Both these school should be proud of the way this years AAC Grand Final was played.
The AAC Grand Final was an excellent example of Junior Rugby League at it's very best, great skill, sportsmanship, magnificent defence and crunching tackles were the story of the 1 st half.
Endeavour SHS's first try came from the middle of the paddock and when Matthew Mundine put Ryan Carr through the smallest of gaps, he was able to sprint 25 mts to score the 1st try of the Grand Final.
Keebra Park's first try was brought about by some very slick passing and a big burst from Keebra Park Five-eight Robert Lui to put the ball down 10 meters from the goals with 3 Endeavour boys trying to stop him. Matt Parata converted to level the scores.
The scores remained deadlocked at 6 - ALL until the 20 minute mark in the second period when from 35 mts out right in front Robert Lui again stepped up to pot a field goal.
Now the scores remained at 7 - 6 and it almost looked like Keebra Park might finally win the Arrive Alive Cup.
it wasn't to be, all of a sudden Endeavour feriously attacked Keebra's line and a blind side pass from Luke Letele to young Rooster Tony Cherrington to smash his way over the line to give Endeavour the lead, and the score became 7 - 10.
Then 2 minutes later a Mundine inside pass again to Cherrington who did his job and scored his second try of the Grand Final, former Australian Schoolboy rep Chase Stanley converts again from the sideline. It was all over after that.
For Endeavour SHS it will be a sweet victory as they were well beaten in the University Shield Grand Final by HUNTER SHS during the week and oh so close for Keebra Park.
But as all Sharks fans know, "there's always next year"

MATCH REPORT |
Queensland Champions KEEBRA SHS keep ALIVE in the ARRIVE ALIVE CUP after tonights National Semi Final at Dairy Farmers Stadium, Townsville.
The opening couple minutes were like two battle ship crashing together, with strong defence on both side.
ST. DOMINIC'S from Penrith found it hard to complete a set of 6 in the 1st half completing only 2 sets-of-six twice in 10 plays in possession.
Simply errors from the Dom's play-the-ball area allowed Keebra scoot in for 3 tries from dummy half.
This left the score at 14 - 0 at half time.
A position the St. Dominic's boys fought hard to recover from but could not get any go-forward and had limited opportunities to use the ball.
" Keebra Park will find the going a bit different in Sydney, we play a similararly structured game as ENDEAVOUR, and when we did have possession tonight, the Keebra boys were slow to cover out wide... sometimes the ball just bounces the other way too " said Barry Walsh, St. Dominic's coach.

A KEEBRA Park blitz has sent the Gold Coast school cart wheeling into the national Arrive Alive Cuo final on Friday September 22, beating St Dominics Penrith 20-6 in Fridays semi final at Townsville.
Against bigger opposition Keebra scored three tries in the opening 13 minutes to all but seal the result, establishing a 14-0 advantage by the halftime break.
The highlight of the game came just three minutes in when former Gladstone junior Damon Harth scored a scorching try from dummy-half, running 40m to bring the Dairy Farmers Stadium crowd alive.
Equally at home in the centres or forwards, Harth started at lock and danced confidently through a stack of defenders as he plunged over for the opening try.
His incision was followed five minutes later with a try to centre Kyle Bos down a narrow blindside. At first glance it appeared Bos had bombed a certain try to the open side, but made amends with his determination to find the line.
As has been the case all season, the well-drilled Keebra side showed maturity beyond their years, responding well to adversity and quickly recovering from errors.
Their line speed in defence was again something to behold and they took the match to their southern rivals with a fierce intensity.
When centre Kingi Akauola a prominent figure throughout the schools charge dived over for Keebras third try, it was all one way traffic.
Yet to St Dominics credit they hung on until halftime with a passage of football which saw them give as good as they got.
St Dominics had beaten highly-rated St Gregorys Campbelltown 28-20 the previous week and there was enough to suggest they would lift in the second stanza.
Unfortunately for them, before they could muster a response, the elusive Robert Lui pounced for Keebra.
Playing in front of his old home crowd, the Townsville Centrals and Upper Ross junior made it 18-0, extended to 20-0 when Matt Parata added the extras.
Not long after St Dominics notched their first points with a slick try to winger John Feiloakitau, finishing off a backline movement. Backrower Michael Mate converted for a 20-6 difference.
With almost 20 minutes left on the clock there was plenty of time to bridge the gap, but poor ball handling from both sides took the sting from the match, the scoreline remaining unchanged.
Although not featuring on the scorers sheet, Keebras front row of Stu McGill, Lio Vaiga and Jimmy Poland deserved much of the credit. McGill and Vaiga punched holes in attack and hit hard in defence, while skipper Poland gave good direction and a steadying influence to his side.
Keebras opponents in the national final, to be held in Sydney, will be either reigning champs Endeavour Sports High or Patrician Brothers Blacktown.

ARRIVE ALIVE CUP UPDATE Thurs 30/08 |
31/08 St. Dominic's College Penrith fly off to Townsville today for their Arrive Alive Cup Semi Final clash with Qld AAC Champions Keebra Park SHS on Friday night. Mr. Walsh, St. Dom's Coach said, as the team prepered to leave for the game at Dairy Farmers Stadium, Townsville. |
|
ARRIVE ALIVE CUP UPDATE Wednesday 30/08/06 |
CAN the 'Kid from Cranbrook' return to his old stomping ground and take Keebra Park State High to victory this Friday in the national semi final of the Arrive Alive Cup at Dairy Farmers Stadium?
A former strikeweapon for Townsville junior clubs Centrals Tigers and Upper Ross Rams, the multi-talented Robert Lui will start at five-eighth for Keebra in the clash with St Dominic's Penrith.
On a huge evening of football in the tropics, the Arrive Alive Cup semi will be held at 4.15pm, followed by the Queensland Wizard Cup sudden death final at 5.30pm between the North Queensland Young Guns and Easts Tigers.
As if that wasn't enough, the Cowboys will take on the Parramatta Eels at 7.30pm in a Townsville farewell for stalwarts Matt Sing, Travis Norton and Josh Hannay.
Regardless of the activity scheduled around them, Greg Lenton's Keebra Park side will be firmly focused on continuing on from its 18-4 demolition of St Brendan's Yeppoon a fortnight ago.
If the Gold Coast outfit can overcome St Dominic's it will face either Endeavour Sports High or Patrician Brothers Blacktown in the prestigious national final.

ST. BRENDAN'S COLLEGE YEPPOON (QLD) |
Keebra Park SHS won the Queensland Final of the ARRIVE ALIVE CUP on a warm Saturday night with a powerful display of disiplined Rugby League at Browne Park, Rockhampton.
The score was a credit to the scrambling ferocity of the ST. BRENDAN'S defence who worked very hard all night to restrict KEEBRA PARK to just 18 points.
" Keebra are lightning fast and their finishing was exceptional, our team defensive effort kept us from getting really hammered " ST. BRENDAN'S COLLEGE Principal Mr. Dash also said " the Keebra captain spoke very well after the game, he thanked our boys, the crowd and he said although we are from the gold Coast, we'll be playing for all QUEENSLAND, it changed everything Mr. Dash said, even our boys will be going for KEEBRA in the AAC". |
