ANDREW GEE SHIELD :
Redcliffe SHS 18 def Wavell SHS 12
Despite the loss of three key players, a confident looking Open Boys team took the field against a strong Wavell side.
In windy conditions Wavell scored within the first minute, capitalising on a mistake from the kick off.
Solid defence and brutal tackling by Josh Batalibasi and Billy Sasalu forced Wavell into a stray pass for a prowling Scott Maxim to intercept. Hooker Tom Webber went on to put captain Adam Jeffery through a gap to level the scores, Zac Skoripski converting into the breeze.
Some loose ball then allowed Wavell to score near the posts. This setback seemed to fire up the Redcliffe side as the forwards started to carve out easy metres with straight runs. (Matt Humphries carried the ball and three Wavell players well into the oppositions half.) As holes started to appear in the Wavell defense, JB’s fantastic ‘around the corner’ pass set up a rampant Brett Coutts to score the equalizer.
On the stroke of half time the dominance was further converted as Tom Webber sold a dummy scoot over on the fifth tackle, AJ Martin adding the extras.
In the second half a refocused Wavell side lay siege to the Redcliffe line with full back Lee Johnston and wing Scott Maxim brilliantly diffusing dangerous bombs.
Halfback Aaron Hammant deserves credit on a fine kicking game and leading the team in attack, as do the hardworking forwards Harley Aiono, Sam Tini and John Graham.
Our star performers of the day were; Josh Batalibasi, Tom Webber, Adam Jeffery and Aaron Hammant.
UNDER 14 HANCOCK CUP:
Palm Beach SHS 28 def Redcliffe SHS 12
Palm Beach unfortunately proved to be too quick for Redclffe SHS’ first round match of the season, it looked promising for Redcliffe in the first half with Redcliffe only trailing 12-6 thanks to a try by Jayden Best.
Despite a good try by Alex Stack from dummy-half in the second half Palm Beach ran in 3 quick tries to ultimately win the game 28-12.
Redcliffe’s best player of the match was Tom Overington. Accolades also go to Mitch Liggins and Simon Malcolm.
UNDER 13 RENOUF SHIELD:
Palm Beach SHS 16 def Redcliffe SHS 8
The first round of the Bronco’s Challenge was a 1hr 45min bus trip to Tugan to take on Palm Beach Currumbin SHS. With a heavy ocean cross breeze Redcliffe lead 8-6 at half time.
Josh Beehag and JP Visser both crossing for 4 pointers. The half was based around fantastic defence, as we payed for poor ball control which allowed Palm Beach to gain several sets at our line.
In the second half Palm Beach had the cyclone behind them and continued to pepper the boy’s line. We eventually went down 16-8.
We paid for poor field position. The whole side played well and showed tremendous courage in their defensive effort. Palm Beach are a very big side and we continually punched above our weight.
Bring on next week!!!
