KEEBRA ARRIVE AS NEW CHAMPIONS

Keebra Park has arrived and they are really alive as they get their hands on the Arrive Alive Cup yesterday for the first time
PHOTO'S : Keebra wins title
WESTS Tigers are refusing to back down in a tug-of-war with the Broncos for young fullback Jordan Kahu who yesterday led Keebra Park to the Gold Coast School's first Arrive Alive Cup title.
The Kiwi product won the Peter Sterling Medal for the best player in the national schoolboy competition as Keebra held on to beat Matraville Sports High 18-12 in a thriller at ANZ stadium in Sydney.
Keebra led 12-0 at the break after tries to winger Henere Wells and barnstorming backrower Ben Murdoch.
Centre Sione Akaula scored after the break to make it 18-6 before Matraville fought back.
It was the third straight final for Matraville but after winning in 2007 they've now lost the past two to Gold Coast schools after being rolled by Keebra's arch rivals Palm Beach-Currumbin last year.
"PBC are our biggest rivals and when we beat them we didn't want to slack out and lose and not win the Australian title," said Kahu.
"Inside I was scared but I wasn't going to give up and I'm sure all the boys were thinking the same."
Kahu now hopes to follow the lead of the likes of Benji Marshall and be the next star to come out of Keebra Park: "It's always been my dream to play at the highest level of any sport. Hopefully NRL is my next step up."
The question now is who's colours will he be wearing next year.
Kahu wants to join the Broncos so he can stay close to his father Dave on the Gold Coast but Wests Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell claimed the Sydney club had an option on his services and expected him to honour the deal and head to them along with prop Isaac Lui and secondrower Ben Murdoch.
"We're not happy. We've looked after him for two years," said McDonnell.
"We brought him down to our camp and all of a sudden another club wants to come in and take him.
"We have an option on him for next year. We've taken it up and expect him to come down."
The tug-of-war for Kahu couldn't take any of the gloss off the win for Keebra's veteran coach Greg Lenton.
Lenton is celebrating his 30th year at Keebra.
"It's a great thing for the school -- it's a great school," said Lenton, who was delighted to get the monkey off the back.
"That was always commented on and we'd played a lot of Queensland finals and got through to a few Australians but hadn't got one so it's nice to finally get one.
"I've always enjoyed working with the boys and seeing the boys develop and go on and play and also develop good characters.
"It hasn't always been about winning the national title, that's not what motivated me but I'm not saying it's not nice to get one."
Keebra got a good start when six minutes in quick hands saw winger Wells score from a scrum while five from the break Murdoch beat five defenders to score.
Matraville fired up after half-time and shortly after a spilt bomb their lock Kyle Fraser scored.
Keebra fans were able to breathe easier when centre Sione Akaula scored shortly after and Kahu landed the extras from the sideline.
Centre Haliano Saluka scored late for Matraville to make it a nervous final 10 minutes before Keebra could finally celebrate. |

KEEBRA'S TIOA STANDS TALL
Story BY : Jake Dew
CONNOR Tioa, pictured, had no plans to play a role in Keebra Park's push for Arrive Alive Cup glory this season.
But through dedication, motivation and never giving in, he will take the big boys head-on in Keebra's national rugby league final against Sydney powerhouse Matraville Sports High at Sydney's ANZ Stadium today.
Keebra landed in Sydney yesterday and had a hitout at Wests Tigers home base at Concord Oval.
While injury handed the 16-year-old his chance, Keebra coach Greg Lenton said Tioa stood tall with a solid debut performance against Endeavour Sports High to help lift the side to the final.
Lenton says he was impressed by the work ethic of the gifted teenager -- brought to the Keebra program from Sunnybank two years ago.
"(Connor) has always been a good kid who has worked hard," said Lenton, who brought Tioa into the side after hooker Richie Powell broke his jaw.
"He is one of the fittest kids to have come through the program. He is always wanting to learn."
Tioa knows tonight he will need to do plenty if Keebra is to have a chance.
He could follow Keebra stars Robert Lui, Benji Marshall, Ben Te'o and Jamaal Lolesi into the NRL.
"I'm hoping to go that far. Rugby league is my life but I know I have to work hard in school," said Tioa, who hopes to become an accountant.
"It's tough juggling school, work and training and playing football but you just have to stay committed.
"I have been lucky. I came here when I was 14. The school brought me here and they have helped me become not only a better player but also a better person."
Matraville will start favourites.
But Keebra, who have lost three finals -- in 1987, 2005 and 2006 -- will be hoping to keep the trophy on the Coast following Palm Beach Currumbin's victory over Matraville in last year's decider. |

ARRIVE aLIVE CUP WRAP
Story & Photo's By :
Keebra Park are through to this years Arrive alive Cup grand final against mighty Matraville Sports High School.
Keebra shocked the crowd at ANZ stadium, closing down the game and successfully closing down the skilled Endeavour backs.
This is the 3 rd time these two highly rated schools have fought the Arrive alive duel, the previous 2 occasions were the 2005 & 2006 grand finals where Endeavour were the winners on both occasions.
Not this time, Keebra Park were the first to score in this semi final after they had half a dozen or more repeated sets inside Endeavour's 20 meter line.
Endeavour were marvelous in defence, dropping the attacking Queenslanders within millimeters of the try line.
The weight of possession eventually told and Keebra Park were able to break the Endeavour line when Sione Akoula scored, the conversion was straight thru the goal posts and the score was 6 - 0.
Endeavour finally held the ball for a full set, the footy was like a hot potato with the Sydney boys passing the ball along the line to Rass with flicked the ball to Tom Wishardt who was 10 cm from the line put the ball down and was smashed for his efforts, the kick from near the sideline hit the near post.
Endeavour were in again when Endeavour covered the length of the field in one set to see the Somoan flier DJ Percell had momentum to slide into the in goal to give his school the lead. Skipper John Nicholas converted to make the score 10 - 6.
It didn't take long in this mistake riddled game for Keebra to once again grab the lead when big Ben Murdock bashed his way through a few tired defenders to run the rest of the 40 meters to out the ball down under the black dot.

KIRWAN BATTLE IT OUT
Story & Photo BY : JOSH ALSTON
THEY may have finished as runners-up in the Arrive Alive Cup Queensland final, but Kirwan High showed enough to indicate they will return stronger next year.
The young side were bulldozed by the giant Keebra Park High pack in the first half of their 34-18 loss, but rallied in the second half to restore credibility to the scoreline.
Keebra Park - traditional powerhouses and breeding ground of the likes of Benji Marshall - will move into the national finals in New South Wales with their win.
Kirwan High coach George Bartlett paid credit to their opposition and to his young side, many of whom will return for another crack at the title in 2010.
''They were good opposition, too big for us today,'' he said.
''They certainly dominated a lot of our guys in the middle of the field.
''To the kids' credit they hung in there towards the back end of the game and came home holding their heads high. A lot of them will come back next year, there are seven 16-year-olds in our team, we'll have a very solid side next year.''
Keebra Park ran out to an unassailable 34-6 lead early in the second half as their giant forward pack ran roughshod over Kirwan and fullback Jordan Kahu weaved his way through the tiring defence.
Kahu was awarded man-of-the-match for his scything runs and a brilliant try in which he ran 70m to score under the posts.
The locals didn't give up the fight though, five-eighth Luke Abdul-Rahman and Nathan Norford making the most of sustained pressure to peg the scoreline back.
Bartlett backed Keebra Park to represent Queensland well in the finals and said he was proud of his side's efforts this year.
''To win the Arrive Alive Cup you've got to be very good and there are some great players in the opponent's team, they'll go a fair way,'' he said.
''We've got a great side for next year and we've got some great kids this year.
''We've had a really good year and I'm really proud of the boys.''
KEEBRA PARK HIGH 34 (Danny White 2, Mosese Fotuaika, Henere Wells, Ben Murdoch, Jordan Kahu tries; Kahu 5 goals) d KIRWAN HIGH 18 (Rhyse Martin, Luke Abdul-Rahman, Nathan Norford tries; Quinton Pomare-Anderson 3 goals). |
KEEBRA PARK THRU TO SEMI'S
Story by :
Keebra Park State High School have booked an Arrive alive semi final berth against their old enemy Endeavour Sports High School after dominating Kirwin SHS in the Queensland final on Friday afternoon. .
Kirwin came out on fire and were first to score after only a few minutes, with the conversion lead 6 - 0, then reality sunk in as Keebra's big blokes gave their backs room to move and Keebra Park went to the half time break 16 -6 up
Keebra Park kept up the rage in the second half with Man of the Match Jordan Kahu ripping the Kirwan centers to pieces.
The score blew out to 34 - 6 when Kirwan remembered what 'pride' in their schools footy jumper was all about and frantically attacked the bigger Keebra Park line and running in 12 more points before the final whistle.
Congratulations to Keebra Park SHS, 2009 Queensland Arrive alive Cup Champions after a good display of schoolboys rugby league at Dairy Farmer Stadium up in sunny Townsville.
The last time two times Keebra Park played Endeavour SHS, it was in the 2006 and 2007 Arrive alive Cup grand finals where Endeavour won number two and number three of the National Titles.

Endeavour SHS are thru to the Quarter Finals of the Arrive alive Cup after belting Hills 12 - 36 this afternoon at MacCreadie Oval.
Endeavour play the winner of the QLD final tomorrow nite between Keebra Park & Kirwan.
Joseph Leilu was the best on the ground, breaking the Hills line at will, running plenty of meters and scored a try in each half in a dominating game.
Both half backs played well, Hills half Jason Saege must have made over 20 tackles in a good display of what a tough little man can do.

Story & Photo's :
Matraville Sports High School move closer to more Arrive alive Cup glory with a hard fought win over a very determined and skillful Patrician Brothers Blacktown at the Sydney Footy Stadium yesterday arvo.
Patrician Brothers attacked their line repeatedly in the opening half and at one stage, trapping Matraville in goal and had 5 or 6 sets to break the Matra line.
At the other end of the field Matraville took one set to gain 80 meters to send Arthur Takapu over the line.
In a day for the underdog, Patrician Brothers went in at the break 4 - 6 in the lead after Mark Felimeka was good enough to get over in the corner, the St. Pat's boys, the band and the crowd went off, Matt Moylin added the 2 points with a great kick from the side line.

KIRWAN ARRIVES TO THRASH IGNATIUS PARK
Story & Photo BY : JOSH ALSTON
KIRWAN High survived an early scare and surged into the Arrive Alive Cup state final after comfortably accounting for Ignatius Park 32-14 at Dairy Farmers Stadium yesterday.
After losing both of their previous games against Iggy Park this year, it looked like it would be another tough afternoon when Alex Elisala and Chris Grevsmuhl ran in early tries.
Kyle Feldt was not able to convert either try from close range though, and Kirwan raced to the lead through converted tries to Gary Fuimaono, Jermaine Veukiso and a Quinton Pomare-Anderson penalty goal.
Feldt levelled the scores after the break with a damaging run at the line, but from there it was all Kirwan.
In a bizarre passage of play, Ignatius Park prop Grevsmuhl lost his shoe and tossed it aside, playing with just a sock on one foot.
It didn't help him, as he was penalised for a high shot on Jai Ingram and then was unable to stop a rampaging Francis Veukiso from barging over the top of him and the fullback to score and reclaim the lead for Kirwan.
Hooker Nathan Norford then rubbed salt into the wound with a late try from a scrum, and Jeffery Wilson bagged a try off a chargedown to seal the rout.
Kirwan coach George Bartlett rated the win as one of the more enjoyable he had been involved in after his players rallied from their two previous losses, as well as the absence of Wayne Ulugia (under-20s) and Jason Taumalolo (representative duties).
''That's why we love rugby league, we were the underdogs today and we got up,'' he said.
''I'm really proud of them, they're all 16, 17 and they think they're big men and they look like big men but they're still young kids really.
''When they put their best on the day they're going to beat anybody.
''That's footy, (coach) Dave (Elliot) is a good coach, I certainly know how they feel, I've been in that situation before. Certainly they can hold their heads high, they're a very good rugby league side.''
Kirwan will now face renowned rugby league nursery Keebra Park - the southern Queensland winner - in the final which will be one of the curtain-raisers to the Cowboys/Broncos game in a fortnight.

To finish this fantastic week of Arrive alive Cup football, 2007 Champions Matraville Sports High School played Regional Champions St. John's College, Woodlawn from Lismore.
Matraville SHS are an awesome schoolboys rugby league team who are very well coached by Scott Murray and his staff.
Matraville like to play fast and tough footy as the boys from St. John's found out the hard way at CUA Stadium Penrith.
Matraville scored in the first minute of the game, it only took 3 or 4 passes from the kick off for Haliano Suluka to run the last 40 meters himself, Matraville skipper and Australian Schoolboy Jacob Miller added the 2 points.. MORE SOON
.. Meanwhile heading back to sydney in the luxury souths juniors bus watching the game on the big plasma screen..

We asked Scott who he thought played well from St. John's?
" I thought Sirosen (Damien) was good, the back rowers were good too"
What about the Matra boys Scott?
" Teni Waipouri was good, our hooker Mitchell Burke was good too"

HILLS TRUE GRIT TRUIMPHS OVER ST GREGORY’S
Story & Photo's By : pk &
The new kids on the block from The Hills Sports High School have beaten the crown kings from St Gregory’s College Campbelltown 13 - 6 in a tough round of 16 Arrive Alive clash at Leichhardt Oval.
The game was played in fine sunny conditions and in front of a large crowd. We had the Hills Sports High School cheerleaders adding glitz and glamour to the event not to mention the great athleticism that has made them national champions in their field.
The Greg’s supporters also added great atmosphere and they revved up their team many times with their war cry of “we are warriors”.
It was a tough no nonsense game where both teams fought the hard fight. No inch given – none returned.
There had been much discussion over the battle of the two props Peni Terepo from Hills and Matthew Groat from St Gregs. Groat was awarded an Australian Schoolboys jersey after the Australian Championships held in Newcastle last month.
Many people have claimed Terepo should also have got a Guernsey and the talk before the game was the battle of the props was going to be a game within a game.
And the winner was.......
Drum roll please............
Envelope.......................
Peni Terepo in a clear points decision.
Terepo was a colossus as he charged fearlessly into the Greg’s defence and made many inroads during the course of the game. He inspired the Hills team on the day.
Whenever Terepo got the ball the Greg’s supporters would go “Ohh” in anticipation of a nice greeting from Groat and his front row partner Jack Stockwell. It was great theatre. This was schoolboy rugby league at its best.
Not far behind Terepo in performance was lock Tim Crellin. This boy reminds me of a pit bull terrier – only more savage.
He shortened up a few of the Greg’s boys in big hits that reverberated around the ground. His tackling performance was sensational and his effort went a long way to help Hills win this game.
Hills led at half time by 12-0 after tries to hooker Nick Folino and centre Jordan Petera and both tries were converted by five eight Jason Wehbe.
Folino struck like lightening out of dummy half close to the line to grab a four-pointer. Petera grabbed his after the ball went wide and he showed a nice right-foot step to out smart the Greg’s defence to score a great try.
I felt Hills were comfortably in control during the first half. They were completing their sets and good kicking games from their halves pair Wehbe and Jason Seage kept Greg’s pinned down in their half.
Greg’s kicking game courtesy of second rower Alex McKinnon was also good but eager beaver fullback Gerard McCallum and his two wingers in good support always defused potentially dangerous situations.
The second half was a different story. St Greg’s, backed by their loud supporters group, came out for the second stanza fired up.
Gregs started finding holes close to the ruck as the big Hills forwards started tiring. One of those holes led to a try by the Greg’s centre Limani Kano after some weak defence allowed him to score. The try was converted by Anthony Provost. Score 12-6 to Hills.
Soon after Jason Wehbe kicked a field goal to take the score to 13-6. The Greg’s boys looked deflated for a while after this but then lauched a number of raids on the tiring Hills defence.
They bombed three tries after last ditch Hills defence was there to spoil the party. Hills coach Mark Horo will be concerned about how quick the Greg’s team were allowed to play the ball.
This caused great problems for the Hills defence as Greg’s continually caught them knapping close to the ruck. The 25 minute halves definitely favour the big Hills team.
If Greg’s had taken those chances they would have won the game. But that’s footy. They are a great rugby league school and their boys never gave up. They should be proud of their effort.
In the end it was the true grit determination of the Hills outfit that got them home.
Best for Greg’s were their hooker, fullback Jay Bonnell, McKinnon and Stockwell. Hills were best served by Terepo, Crellin, lock Brett Bennett, Folino, Petera and Wehbe’s kicking game was great.
Hills now go on to a quarter final match against league powerhouse Endeavour Sports High School.
Interestingly in a University Shield clash held earlier in the year Hills beat them by around 30 points. I do not foresee a similar result in the next match.
PK’S BEST AND FAIREST :
3 – Peni Terepo Hills prop
2 – Tim Crellin Hills lock
1 – Greg’s hooker

WHAT AN ARRIVE ALIVE WEEK - SO FAR
Story & Photo's :
Its getting crazy with schools battling for a spot in the finals of this years Arrive alive Cup Competition.
While there were three Queensland quarter finals last night, the defending Champions Palm Beach Currrumbin are GOOOnE, Keebra Park wait to find out who they play in 3 weeks.
It was the Sydney boys who turned it on at Leichhardt Oval on Wednesday afternoon with an Arrive alive double header.
The Hills Sports High School were the first team through to the quarter finals and earned a berth against three time champions Endeavour Sports High School.
A real big thank you to Hills Sports who not only turned up with a good footy team, they also brought along their fantastic cheerleaders.
Yep, Hills Sports have a well drilled and exciting cheerleaders squad.
You can see them in action here
Back to the footy.
Hills won their game against a good St Gregory's College this after noon in a close game that ended with a slick field goal from Jason Webhe to give his school a 13 - 6 win.
Both teams played well but St. Greg's bungled a few chances in the second half that cost them dearly.
There was action-a-plenty with big forwards Peni Terepo from Hills and Matthew Groat, St Gregs clashing a number of times.
Dropped ball cost both teams plenty and Hills fullback Gerald McCallum saved the day a couple times.
Well done to the Hills boys & the coaching staff led by former kiwi international Mark Horo.
They go on to the quarter finals in the competition while St. Greg's certainly proved they should be in ourfootyteam's TOP 10 AUSSIE SCHOOLS.
They are a great rugby league school and as their team war cry said today; they are warriors.
In the other round of 16 game St Dominics blew a good lead to go down to Holy Cross College Ryde 24-22.
Balmain SG Ball five eight Patrick Politoni scored a double to seal the win.
It was a fiery clash with three players sent to the sin bin as passion went into over drive.
Blake Austin from St Doms also scored a double.
The Holy Cross boys behind the goals waiting for the score to go to 22 - 6 against them just before half time were saying, "c'mon boys, we were like this against Erindale, we can do this" - and they did, they came out scoring 18 unanswered second half points to book a place with Westfields Sports High School in the Arrive alive Cup semi finals.
Then to finish this great Arrive alive Cup week, mighty Matraville Sports High School travel to CUA Stadium to play against St. John's Woodlawn, this game should be a cracker.
Watch for PK's exclusive reports and ourfootyteam.com photos of the games soon. |

Then with less than 2 minutes, Jordan Kahu successfully slotted a field goal to give Keebra Park sweet revenge on the long time rivals.
In the other 2 Queensland semi final, KIRWAN SHS have set themselves up with a showdown with Ingatius Park for the right to play Keebra Park in the QLD grand Final in 3 weeks.

AAC HOTS UP IN QLD
Story By : KEEBRA PARK SHS dhart
This week will see the South East Qld Final of the Arrive Alive Cup with PBC up against Keebra Park in what has become a traditional fixture.
Since 2005 these two sides have battled it out for a spot in the Qld Final with Keebra winning in 2005 and 2006 and PBC taking the honours in 2007 and 2008.
This year will see PBC boasting six Titans Toyota Cup players including Australian players, Jordan Rankin, Ryan James up against a relatively unknown Keebra Park Outfit.
Both sides had comfortable wins in the semi final stages and it looks like the game will live up to the expectations.
Keebra will go into the game with the underdog tag but that will not phase them. They have been training well under schoolboy coashing stalwart, Greg Lenton and know they are capable of a good win if they play to their strengths.
Whatever the outcome it is sure to be a great clash. The game is at Pizzey Park on Wednesday 5th of August.
Good luck boys |

Story & Photo BY : MARK RAYNER
SAINT Stanislaus’ College have seen their Arrive Alive Cup bid come to an end at the hands of St Gregory’s College, going down 40 - 0 at their Number One Field yesterday.
While Stannies went into the match of the belief that they could come away with a win, they were always going to struggle against a team that is widely recognised as a powerhouse in schoolboy rugby league.
Stannies coach Paul McDonald praised his side after the game, but conceded that they were outclassed by the size and skill of the St Greg’s team.
“St Greg’s were good in attack, they got a lot of momentum. They have two Australian Schoolboys props and a few boys who played for the state side, so they got a lot of momentum on us,” he said.
“While we defended well they just kept going forward and used their momentum to score their tries out wide.”
St Greg’s dominated from the outset, getting the opening try early in the first half and at the break they held a comfortable 24 - 0 lead.
They added another three tries in the second half to take the score out to 40 - 0 and while Stannies also created a handful of opportunities, they couldn’t crack the Greg’s defence.
McDonald said he was proud of his team for their efforts and the fact that they never gave up, even late in the second half when the game had gotten away from them.
“The school should be very proud of the boys because they tried from the word go. They thought they had a chance of winning, they never gave up and kept going until the end,” he said.
“They loved the collisions in defence and they certainly put some shots in, they didn’t get a try today but they were pushing down the left side trying to exploit what’s down there, but it’s a credit to our boys that they kept going.”
McDonald paid credit to impressive prop Angus Brotherton, who had a difficult role against two of the best forwards in the competition.
“I just want to give a wrap to Angus Brotherton who I thought was not only our best but he could have been the best on the field. He played front row, he’s only a small fellow and he really took it to these school boys and showed that he is a player of the future,” he said.
“Our whole forward pack tried their hardest but they stood in front of a bigger opposition and had their own little victories at times.”
Rugby league has grown in popularity at Stannies and while McDonald is realistic about it’s status compared to union, he said he was satisfied with the success of the code.
“As far as league goes we use it as an opportunity for kids to play sport. It’s not about playing league or union, union will always be the dominant sport here and there’s not much more we can do with the league,” the Stannies coach said.
McDonald also said that while it was satisfying to make the top 32 teams in the Arrive Alive Cup, he was proud of his team for winning the regional division over Dubbo Senior Campus, Red Bend College and St John’s of Dubbo. |

ARRIVE ALIVE CUP UPDATE
CHIFLEY COLLEGE V KIAMA HIGH SCHOOL
Story By : AaC
Arrive alive Cup action continued last Friday with WIN Jubilee Oval playing host to a hard fought encounter between two aspiring schools from the Tier B side of the draw - Chifley College and Kiama High School.
The match was a closely contested physical encounter between two evenly matched schools. In a match where momentum swung a number of times, Kiama High School ran out 16-10 winners and advanced to the round of 16.
The match was a brilliant display of schoolboy Rugby League and both schools can be proud of their efforts.
The match last Friday was a physical contest played in cold & windy conditions. Chifley appeared the stronger and more physical side in the opening half.
Strong defence from both sides was prevalent in the first period, with both schools coming up with some strong tackles. It was a lone try to Chifley front rower Chris Tavai that separated the two schools in the opening 20 minutes.
With only minutes remaining in the first stanza, the Kiama High halves combined brilliantly with a sharp attacking play that saw halfback Mark Asquith break the line and throw a great inside to ball five eighth Rixon Russell (pictured) who showed enough pace to score under the posts. Kiama converted and took a 6-4 into the half time break.
Kiama started on the attack in the second half, and after a well-placed kick in the in goal from fullback Simon Maslanka, the Kiama School had the chance to mount some good pressure on the Chifley defence.
It did not take long for Kiama to turn this pressure into points when centre, and man of the match Kal Collins (pictured) dived over in the corner to extend the Kiama lead. After a penalty on the next set, Kiama were again peppering the Chifley line.
This time it was half back Mark Asquith, who split the defence and showed some quick feet to dive over and score close to the posts. Maslanka converted to extend the Kiama lead to 16-4.
Chifley College had to be next to score to keep their competition chances alive. It was a beautiful kick from halfback Dean McWhirter to his flying centre Alan Morrison that saw Chifley reduce the margin to a converted try.
Chifley began to move the ball well down field as the Kiama defence began to tire. Their big physical side was able to offload the ball at will and the team were finding gaps in the Kiama line.
Chifley fullback Michael Compton looked dangerous and likely to break the Kiama line on a number of occasions. Five eighth Dylan Ariu exemplified impressive footwork, and the size and strength of centre Tekina Vaiella (pictured) proved a handful for the Kiama High defence. After waves of Chifley attack, it was a mistake in the left hand corner that saw Chifley fall metres short of scoring the comeback try.
Kiama were spirited in the final minutes and were good enough to hold on for a thrilling 16-10 victory. Kiama will now play southern Sydney powerhouse Endeavour Sports High School on Friday July 31st at WIN Stadium, Wollongong.
In other Arrive alive Cup matches, Patrician Brothers' Blacktown have recorded a huge 62-0 win over Tier A school La Salle Catholic College.
Patrician Brothers' Blacktown look ready to impress in the 2009 Arrive alive Cup, they now await the winner of Matraville Sports High and St John's Woodlawn.
The next Arrive alive Cup match is scheduled for Friday 24th, July at Blue Tongue Stadium between Holy Cross & Erindale College. |

Story & Photo BY : Dave Kirkpatrick
ST JOHNS College Woodlawn have set themselves up for a showdown against one of Sydney's elite rugby league schools after downing the strong St Francis Xavier College 26-6 yesterday.
Some mighty defence, particularly in the second half, and a strong attacking game from centre Nathaniel Regueira paved the way for the win.
Nathaniel scored two tries and kicked two conversions to put the game well beyond the reach of the visiting team, which travelled up from Hamilton in Newcastle for the game.
Woodlawn has now progressed through Tier B to become one of the final four non-seeded schools in the Arrive Alive Cup.
Assistant coach Simon Andrews said Woodlawn would now meet powerhouse Sydney team Matraville Sports High.
“A lot of their players will be from the Sydney Roosters' under-20s, so we will have to sort out where we will play them,” he said.
“It is the premier competition for schoolboy rugby league and to be in the final four of the non-seeded sides is a really big achievement.
“We do see ourselves as a rugby league powerhouse in this area and it is good to see us get the runs on the board in terms of results.”
Woodlawn, which fielded a depleted side due to injury, led 16-0 at half-time and looked almost certain to hold St Francis Xavier scoreless in the second half.
But after Woodlawn held out set after set of attacking play close to the try-line, St Francis managed to break through for a consolation four-pointer late in the game.
Woodlawn responded in kind soon after as Nathaniel stepped off his left from about 20 metres out and timed his angled run beautifully to score beneath the cross-bar.
He left the conversion for hooker Caleb Binge and the big lad didn't disappoint, calmly potting the conversion from right in front which left the finals score at 26-6.
Aside from Nathaniel's 12-point personal tally, other try scorers included Mitchell Krause, Michael Thomas and Damian Sironen. |

Kiama High School (16) defeated Chifley College (10)
The first televised match of the Arrive alive Cup for 2009 was played last Friday at the Sydney Football Stadium.
The anticipated Tier A clash was won by Westfields Sports High in a convincing fashion, with Westfields recording an impressive 24-6 victory over 2008 semi-finalists Hunter Sports High.
Westfields Sports controlled the match from start to finish and were particularly impressive in their first up start in the Arrive alive Cup for 2009.
Westfields Sports boast a large pack of hard running and mobile forwards. It was their size & strength up front that troubled the Hunter defence throughout the match.
The platform laid by their forward pack enabled halves Sean Finnerty & Jaydin Tavita to control the match with both a solid kicking game and strong outside passing game.
Westfields Sports possess speed, size and skill throughout their backline and were led by centre Cruize Iosefa and fullback Chris Uligia who was outstanding on the day.
Hunter Sports were guilty of poor ball handling and ill discipline in the first period of the match, and this in turn hurt Hunter in field position and on the scoreboard.
Westfields were provided good field position in the opening 20-minute period and did not take long to open the scoring.
Some relatively soft goal line defence allowed Westfields to race to an early 10-0 lead following close range tries to second rower Rodney Moefaauo (pictured below) & hooker Tunui Joseph.
Hunter never recovered from this ten-point deficit despite scoring late in the first half through through Matt Ireland to reduce the lead to 10-6.
Westfields hit straight back, after a good surge down field; a strong effort from winger Tyrone Falugia allowed Westfields to extend their lead to14-6 at the half time break.
Westfields looked strong in defence in the second half and despite some surging runs from the Hunter forwards, the defensive line repelled waves of attack and begun to frustrate the Hunter side.
Later in the half, on a kick return, Westfields fullback Chris Uligia did remarkably well to beat a number of defenders before showing a great turn of speed to slice through the Hunter line, he then found support from his teammates before winger Keith Wicks (pictured) raced down the right hand touch line.
After a play that almost resulted in a remarkable try, Westfields capitalised on some extra numbers to the left with Jaydin Tavita throwing a beautiful ball to find Criuize Iosefa who finished in the left hand corner and put his side up 18-6.
Tavita missed the conversion to put the result beyond doubt, but soon after ran on to a great ball and raced 40 metres to score under the posts, completing his sides 24-6 win over rivals Hunter Sports.
The first up victory was an impressive team performance from a very talented side. Westfields Sports will await the winner of a match between St Dominic's College and Holy Cross or Erindale College.
Westfields are certainly a team to watch out for in the 2009 Arrive alive Cup.
The feature Arrive alive Cup match this week will see two aspiring Tier B schools meet at WIN Jubilee as a pre cursor to the Dragons v Roosters NRL clash.
Both schools have been impressive in their lead up matches: Kiama High defeating St Paul's Manly 40-10 & Chifley College defeating Hallum Senior College 48-6.
Kiama High School is led by captain, fullback & Illawarra Steelers SG Ball representative player Simon Maslanka. In the forwards, second rower Tim Moore is also a player with representative honours and will be looking for a big game on Friday.
Chifley College have been Penrith district champions 7 out of the previous 8 years, and the 2009 team is again showing their talent.
Chifley will look to trouble the Kiama High defence on the edge of the ruck, an area they were strong in against Hallum Senior College. A player to watch out for is lock Elkan Tanuvasa.
The clash promises be a great contest between two sides fighting for a place in the final 16 schools in the 2009 competition.
The winner will play Endeavour Sports High in the next round of the Arrive alive Cup. |

Kiam High School travelled to Sydney for their Arrive alive Cup game at the famous Oki Jubilee Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Both teams went at each other full on with neither team able to get the acendency.
Kiama High were first to score with afine team effort saw the powerful fullback Illawarra Steelers SG Ball's Simon Maslanka storm over for the 4 points.
Kogarah Marist hit back a few moments later when Jake Keffard scored in the corner, Aaron Pollack coverted to give the Sydney side the lead.
Jay Delaney (Kiama) & Jarryd McCarthy (Kogarah) scored 1st half tries with the scores locked at 10 - all at the break.
Kogarah Marist lost talented Dragons SG Ball player Nathan Green early in the 1st half, Greenie wasn't sure where he was for a while there and a quick trip to the hospital for a precausionary check up should see Greenie ok. (we hope so)
The second half was even faster than the first, Simon Maslanka scored again as did Nick Economos for Kogarah, the difference being Pollard's second conversion.
With only minutes to go and the score at 16 - 14 to the local boys, Kogarah Marist had a brain snap and gave away a penality leaving the ref with little choice than to award the penality, sure enough big Simon Maslanka kicked the penality goal from right in front of the uprights.
The siren sounded and the scores were 16 - 16.
Comp convenor Rocky Musolino quickly let everyone know the sudden death rules, 5 each way, then if the scores are still locked, the team that scored first, wins.
Kiama High were first to score in the sudden death extra time, when a flying Tim Moore crossed the line to give his team victory, and remain alive in this years Arrive alive Cup.
This was a good game of schoolboys footy, it games was played in the true spirit of rugby league, both schools should be proud of the ways which their played conduct themselves. |
WASTEFUL FARRER GETS THE JOB DONE
Story & Photo By : BY GEOFF NEWLING
FARRER Memorial Agricultural High School overcame a spirited challenged from Maitland All Saints College to win its way into the next round of the Arrive alive Cup when 26-12 victors at John Simpson Oval, Farrer yesterday.
The home side scored five tries to three in a match where both sides stilted their chances with some basic and costly mistakes.
Maitland All Saints coach Brad Melville thought his side had given Farrer a real fright.
“They were two evenly matched sides,” Melville said.
“Farrer were just a little more enthusiastic and controlled the ball a little better.
“Whoever does the simple things best wins these games.”
Farrer led 10-4 at halftime after tries to fullback Ryan Pooley and Kyle Eather bookended a brilliant try from Maitland five-eighth Ethan McKenzie.
However it was a half where the home side butchered a couple of tries with some poor handling and passing.
“Terrible finishing,” was Farrer coach Steve Cavanagh’s description.
“But they (all Saints) are a good side and they put pressure on us.
“We controlled the ball far, far better in the second half and defended well off our line.
“The good thing is the improvement we have to make is in the simple areas.”
Farrer improved in the second half for pivot Kyle Eather to cross for his second after a great team try where young second-rower Jack Broughton was involved twice.
However All Saints replied, with prop Kurt Warden putting Alex Tupou over for the first of his two tries.
A great Brett Jarrett offload allowed Matt Allwood to score in the corner and take Farrer to 22-8 but half Jack Bowman and McKenzie combined with some wide passes to send Tupou over for his second.
Farrer hooker Cameron Rogers completed the scoring when his deft chip was pulled in by lanky replacement winger Mitchell Swain for a try in the corner.
Rogers was one of his side’s best along with centre Cameron Pyne and second-rowers Jack Broughton and Tom Hine. |
