THE HILLS SHS WIN ARL SCHOOLBOYS CUP
Story By : NSWRL
Photo's BY :
The Final of the ARL Schoolboy Cup was contested at Suncorp Stadium this afternoon between Keebra Park State High and The Hills Sports High School.
Played in front of thousands of family and friends in the grandstands, the match lived up to its final's billing with just the four points separating the two teams come full-time.
With a big home ground advantage it was expected by some quarters that Keebra Park would be the side to hold aloft the ARL Schoolboy Cup, but in somewhat of an upset it was The Hills Sports High who proved too good on the day.
After leading 12-6 at the main break the Hills were able to extend their lead further to hold an 18-10 advantage late in the match and despite a consolation try to Keebra in the dying moments it was the Hills lead by the eventual Peter Sterling Medal Winner in Gerard McCallum that were able to hold on.
The ARL and all of its affiliates would like to congratulate not only The Hills Sports High and Keebra Park State High on a wonderful final, but also all of the sides that contested either the Schoolboy Cup or the Schoolboy Trophy in 2010.
Both competitions have proved hugely successful and we look forward to an even bigger and better 2011. |

ARL SCHOOLBOYS CUP 'GRAND FINAL ' MATCH-UP'S
Story & Photo's By : 'PK' &
What an event, Suncorp Stadium, Friday Football and the two best Schoolboys Rugby League sides in the world will be battling for football supremacy.
Keebra Park are Queenslands best footy school and have been for a couple years now, Keebra are very well coached by Mr. Greg Lenton and his staff, Keebra Park are a formidable side when the big forwards get a roll on.
The Hills Sports High School in Sydney have fought and battled their way into the Inaugral ARL Schoolboys Cup defeating all comers including an excellent team victory again the Mighty Matraville Sports High School at CUA Stadium a couple weeks ago.
The Hills SHS are definately the in form side in NSW at the moment and Keebra Park are the defending Champions. So we are all expecting a cracker of a game on Friday.
JACOB LOKO v KURTIS ROWE |

After starring in the Parramatta SG ball team that went all the way to the grand final Loko cut his teeth in the Eels Toyota Cup team where he earned rave reviews for his exciting running game.
Loko is 98 kilos of muscle and is quick as well. He will be a huge challenge for the Keebra defence playing out in the centres. He always beats the first defender. He will go into the Eels fulltime squad in the off season and many good judges think he will play NRL next season or the one after. |
“BIG WILLY” SKELTON v BRANDON TAGO |

This bloke is possibly the biggest man playing rugby league in Australia. The 2.08m and 143 kg genetic freak is a human wrecking ball as he skittles opposition defences with his big runs. Look for him to come off the bench and cause absolute chaos with the Keebra defence.
It normally takes three to four defenders to halt his progress and that leaves holes for the big fella to slip a ball to an eager support player. Has reportedly signed with the NSW Waratahs. |
JASON WEHBE v CONNER TOIA |

One of the best sixes running around the country and his combination with the other “Jason”, Jason Seage, has been a feature of their play for Hills Sports and Parramatta.
Wehbe has the best kicking game of any school player in Australia. It is NRL standard now. He can kick long and short and this could cause Keebra many headaches for the final.
He has also formed a lethal partnership with Jacob Loko on the left hand side for The Hills and Eels at SG Ball and Toyota Cup level. Scored three trys against Matraville in the semi-final. One to be watched. |
GERARD MCCALLUM v HENARE WELLS |

The Australian Schoolboys fullback is playing some great football of late. His catching and running game has been a delight to watch. Even the great Andrew “Joey” Johns made mention of one of his feats in a TV game as, “the best catch I’ve ever seen.”
Keebra will have to watch their kicking game because McCallum has a great counter-attacking game. The Bulldogs have this bloke signed up but the ARU are also interested in him.
Both Wells & McCallum will be battling for the fullback position on the Australian Schoolboys tour of France & the UK in Dec. |
JASON SEAGE v MATT BEDDOW |

The new addition to the ARU Sevens program will play his final game of rugby league for at least a couple of seasons so he will want to go out on top. The wily half back has formed a great combination with Jason Wehbe in club, school and representative football.
One of the highlights of this combination is the long passes they throw to each other which brings back memories of Ricky Stuart and Laurie Daley and the way they used to play. Seage is very quick and has a great passing game as well. His defence is special and you won’t see coach Mark Horo hiding this bloke in defence. Has been injured of late but Hills expect him to play. |
MARK HORO v GREG LENTON |

This is a battle of the schools SUPER COACHES, Greg Lenton is a longtime legend at the Gold Coast based Keerba Park who has built the Keebra Park rugby league program into one of the best in the country.
MARK HORO is a former Kiwi International and is successfully passing this vast excerience to The Hills SHS players, This coaches battle will be a game within a game |

CHIFLEY COLLEGE – FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
Story By : S FREEBORN (Chifley College)
In an historic ARL Trophy Final Chifley College defeated Eaglevale High School 18 - 14 at the Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday September 17.
Both schools had met in the University Shield with Eaglevale winning in fine style. The ARL Final would be a different story.
Chifley arrived with a committed attitude of not taking defeat as an option. In the opening minutes captain Michal Compton lead the onslaught and created two tries for Dylan Ariu and TekinnaVeiola to lead his team 8-0.
Eaglevale replied with two quick tries and looked to blow the game open with a 10-8 lead.
Just on half time only a desperate tackle from James Bartley kept Chifley in the game. The second half saw Eaglevale increase the led to six points, with goal kicking at a premium.
With eight minutes to go Eaglevale looked home, but the heavy workload of University Shield games was starting to take its toll.
A cheap try to Chifley by Compton and the last five minutes took the result into the balance. With a controversial repeat set two minutes from time Dylan Ariu from a set move fooled the Eaglevale defence and grabbed the title for the boys from Penrith. Paul Tua added the extras for an 18-14 win.
Both schools from the CHS organisation should be proud of the outstanding advertisement for schoolboy rugby league.
Eaglevale’strophys will come in the not too distant future as their program continues to grow with the support of West Tigers.
Chifley have been building to this historic day since 2002 and the ongoing support of Penrith Panthers and St Marys Rugby League Club will only see their program continue to dominate schoolboy rugby league in western Sydney. |

KEEBRA PARK SNEAK THROUGH
Story & Photo's By : Darren Hart &
Keebra through to final after scrappy encounter Keebra Park have progressed to their second consecutive National schoolboy rugby league championship Final after a scrappy victory against Illawarra Sports High from Sydney.
A quickfire try to prop Moseses Fotuaika opened the scoring and conversion by Cayden Matahaere saw the Keebra boys take a 6-0 lead.
An armwrestle ensued and a nasty headclash saw Illawarra loose big prop forward Mitchell Stokes, who was to play no further part in proceedings.
Connor Toia added another unconverted Keebra try that saw them take a 10 - 0 lead into the final moments of the first half.
Illawarra fired back and great probing run by Sam Clune lead to a try before the whistle that saw the halftime score at 10 - 6.
Illawarra were looking dangerous and Keebra were looking uncharacteristically flat. The second half talk seemed to refocus Keebra and soon after the restart a try came off the back of some solid defence.
Cayden Matahaere converted his own try and it was 16 - 6.
Illawarra were already down one SGBall rep in Stokes and in the process of Matahaere scoring also lost Sam Clune walking around SunCorp dazed & confused with a suspected concussion.
To their credit, Illawarra rallied again and scored to put the score at 16 - 12 with 8 minutes remaining.
Then Illawarra made a break down the left side and had a classic 3 on 2 attacking option, Illawarra drew the defenders in, the Illawarra Winger rang inside and the pass went to no one with the line open and only 10 meters away.
Keebra recieved a penalty in front of the posts with 2 minutes to go and opted to kick for the two points that ran down the clock and put Illawarra out of the competition.
This was an scrappy affair with both sides having opportunities to take the game. There is now three weeks until Keebra face off against the winner of the Matraville versus Hills encounter.
A time to regroup and refocus and what will ultimately lead to a classic final.

FORWARDS STEER ST BRENDAN'S TO WIN
Story BY : Guy Williams
A “COURAGEOUS” effort from front-rowers Tama Heka and Justice Grace helped St Brendan's College to victory over Kirwan State High School in the semi-final of the ARL Schoolboy Cup yesterday.
In a physical affair, the game went into extra time after the scores were locked 12-all at full-time.
After extra time, neither side could manage to break the deadlock.
In schoolboy rugby league, after 10 minutes of extra time, the winning team is the one that scores the most tries in the match.
However, both sides had scored the same amount of tries, therefore the team that scored the first try of the match was declared the winner.
That was St Brendan’s College’s Corey Oates.
Despite an earlier start in which St Brendan’s looked in control, Kirwan hit back quickly and led at half-time 10-6.
St Brendan’s were next to score to take a 12-10 lead.
The Yeppoon-based side looked like winning the match in regular time before giving a penalty away within in kicking range 30 seconds from full-time.
Kirwan was successful with the kick and the match was locked up at full-time.
St Brendan’s coach Terry Hansen was particularly pleased with the effort of his forward pack, which stood up to the much larger Kirwan pack.
“Tama Heka and Justice Grace were outstanding up front for us,” said Hansen.
“It wasn’t pretty but they just hung in there.”
To make the win even more impressive, the Kirwan side included a number of North Queensland Cowboys’ Toyota Cup players including second-rower Jason Taumalolo who is a regular fixture starting side.
St Brendan’s now face Keebra Park in the state final next week. |
TWIN PLAYS SCHOOLBOY MATCH
Story By : Greg White
WHEN a schoolboy rugby league player from a Coffs Coast high school was ruled out of his team for a big match he found a ready replacement waiting on the sideline.
His identical twin brother, who was not a student at the school, agreed to take his place and it wasn’t until after the game had finished and his school had won 28-18 in a physical contest that the audacious substitution was discovered.
The incident took place in Coffs Harbour on June 10 during a round of the CRL Schoolboy Trophy, formerly the Arrive Alive Cup.
Greater North Coast Regional Coaching and Development Manager, Graham Boland, believed it was the first time he had come across such an incident in his long career.
“I’m not saying it hasn’t happened before but I was gobsmacked when I first found out what occurred,” he said.
“When you’re organising these activities you don’t expect the kids will swap identities, right under our noses. They even signed the sheets under the false name and I hate to think what could have happened if something had gone wrong.”
It’s believed the regular school coach was unavailable on the day and the parent of another student filled in for the match, which meant it was some time before the swap was detected.
Boland admitted he felt ‘irate’ when first briefed on the incident.
“Once the school realised what had happened, they immediately informed us of the circumstances and forfeited their place in the competition,” he said.
“I feel sorry for them as they didn’t set out to deceive and are just as much the victims as we are.”
The principal of the school involved was asked to comment but advised that privacy regulations forced him to decline.
However, it’s understood that the incident has been addressed within the school system.
At least three players from the match, including the twin brothers, are team-mates in a Group 2 under-18 side but chief administrator Jim Anderson said because the incident had happened at school, his hands were tied from taking further action.
“If anything like a player substitution happened in our jurisdiction and it was proved, we’d take a very dim view,” he said.
“I can promise all those involved would not be seen around rugby league grounds for a very long time.” |

KEEBRA SAY "WHAT RED WALL" ?
Story By : dHart - Keebra Park SHS
Keebra Park down Palm Beach Currumbin and are now through to QLD final in the National Schoolboys Cup.
Keebra Park SHS have succesfully defended their South Qld Champions tag with a solid win over Gold Coast heavyweights Palm Beach Curumbin.
In front of a large crowd at Suncorp Stadium, Keebra were too strong for a nippy PBC outfit who never really gained enough momentum to cause Keebra much trouble.
Half time saw the score at 16-6 too Keebra and a tense first five minutes of the second half saw PBC narrow the margin to 16-12. While the game was there for the taking during this period, it was a ten minute blitz lead mainly by tremendous line breaks by Henare Wells that saw Keebra skip away to a 28-12 lead.
PBC rallied and scored a late consolation try but a try to James Dunley gave Keebra a two try buffer and the 34-18 final score was a fair reflection of the nights events.
Keebra now go on to play the winner of the North Qld final in defence of their National Championship win in 2010. Pictures are on the way.

KEEBRA ARRIVE AS NEW CHAMPIONS
Story By : Patrick Molihan
Photo's BY :
Keebra Park has arrived and they are really alive as they get their hands on the Arrive Alive Cup yesterday for the first time
PHOTO'S : Keebra wins title
WESTS Tigers are refusing to back down in a tug-of-war with the Broncos for young fullback Jordan Kahu who yesterday led Keebra Park to the Gold Coast School's first Arrive Alive Cup title.
The Kiwi product won the Peter Sterling Medal for the best player in the national schoolboy competition as Keebra held on to beat Matraville Sports High 18-12 in a thriller at ANZ stadium in Sydney.
Keebra led 12-0 at the break after tries to winger Henere Wells and barnstorming backrower Ben Murdoch.
Centre Sione Akaula scored after the break to make it 18-6 before Matraville fought back.
It was the third straight final for Matraville but after winning in 2007 they've now lost the past two to Gold Coast schools after being rolled by Keebra's arch rivals Palm Beach-Currumbin last year.
"PBC are our biggest rivals and when we beat them we didn't want to slack out and lose and not win the Australian title," said Kahu.
"Inside I was scared but I wasn't going to give up and I'm sure all the boys were thinking the same."
Kahu now hopes to follow the lead of the likes of Benji Marshall and be the next star to come out of Keebra Park: "It's always been my dream to play at the highest level of any sport. Hopefully NRL is my next step up."
The question now is who's colours will he be wearing next year.
Kahu wants to join the Broncos so he can stay close to his father Dave on the Gold Coast but Wests Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell claimed the Sydney club had an option on his services and expected him to honour the deal and head to them along with prop Isaac Lui and secondrower Ben Murdoch.
"We're not happy. We've looked after him for two years," said McDonnell.
"We brought him down to our camp and all of a sudden another club wants to come in and take him.
"We have an option on him for next year. We've taken it up and expect him to come down."
The tug-of-war for Kahu couldn't take any of the gloss off the win for Keebra's veteran coach Greg Lenton.
Lenton is celebrating his 30th year at Keebra.
"It's a great thing for the school -- it's a great school," said Lenton, who was delighted to get the monkey off the back.
"That was always commented on and we'd played a lot of Queensland finals and got through to a few Australians but hadn't got one so it's nice to finally get one.
"I've always enjoyed working with the boys and seeing the boys develop and go on and play and also develop good characters.
"It hasn't always been about winning the national title, that's not what motivated me but I'm not saying it's not nice to get one."
Keebra got a good start when six minutes in quick hands saw winger Wells score from a scrum while five from the break Murdoch beat five defenders to score.
Matraville fired up after half-time and shortly after a spilt bomb their lock Kyle Fraser scored.
Keebra fans were able to breathe easier when centre Sione Akaula scored shortly after and Kahu landed the extras from the sideline.
Centre Haliano Saluka scored late for Matraville to make it a nervous final 10 minutes before Keebra could finally celebrate. |
