IGGY'S RUN ENDED
Story By : MICHAEL THOMPSON
IGNATIUS Park College bowed out of the GIO Schoolboys Cup on Saturday after being out-muscled by Keebra Park High 22-12 in the Queensland final at Dairy Farmers Stadium.
Keebra Park advance to the national semi-finals of Australia's most prestigious schoolboys rugby league competition, but Saturday's result hung in the balance all game.
Down 16-12 with four minutes until fulltime, Iggy Park's Coen Hess was held up over the Keebra Park tryline in what turned out to be the game-defining play.
Keebra then scored a runaway try on the next set to snatch victory.
Iggy Park coach Dave Elliott said his team would eventually get over the heartbreaking loss.
"There is a bit of disappointment from the boys because it's the final year at Iggy Park for a lot of them," he said.
"But we've had a really good year - we won the (North Queensland) Cowboys Challenge, then the Confraternity Carnival, and now very nearly this game." Keebra scored first four minutes after kick-off, but Iggy Park soon levelled after prop Cade Maloney crossed under the posts.
Keebra showed their class, however, by capitalising on a brace of penalties to score two quick tries and enter the break up 16-6.
Maloney scored again for Ignatius Park with 10 minutes left in the game, and the home team finished strongly as expected, but Keebra's size proved too much in both attack and defence.
"We knew if we got our share of possession in the second half we'd go all right," Elliott said. "There were probably a couple of times where one more pass would have seen us go over (the tryline), but that's footy."
KEEBRA PARK 22 (V Tuli, D Hoeter, J Pakau, J Marsters tries; G Hamilton 3 goals) IGNATIUS PARK 12 (C Maloney 2 tries; A Solari 2 goals). |

Holy Cross College Ryde will play the all powerful Patrician Brothers College Blacktown in the 1st gio Schoolboys Cup Semi Final this year after an impressive 20 - nil win over Westfields SHS at Leichhardt Oval on Friday arvie.
With a combined 9 Australian Schoolboys this should be a very exciting and fast Semi Final. Holy Cross have 3 Schoolboys to follow in the foot steps of last years skipper Curtis Sirosen who is now playing 1st grade in the NRL.
The Holy Cross backs are very dangerous with Mitchell Moses and Bradley Dietz & Luke Brooks in the halves, these stars of the future will line up against the England Academy in Melbourne on the 5th of August. |
HOW GOOD ARE PATRICIAN BROTHERS?? Story & Photo's By :
Patrician Brothers Blacktown put on a 1st half football clinic against defending 2 time Schoolboys Cup Champions running in 3 converted tries b4 the break
The Hills regrouped after the break and played some good footy with the forwards working hard for meters, the backs found room on the ground with the footy in hand, this resulted in 2 quick tries.
The momentum was swinging The Hills ways when Man of the Match Paulie Paulie smashed thru the defencive line at halfway to score a coach killer of a try to put the game too far away for the defending Champs to gain.
This was a good game of footy, hot heads didnt get their way and we saw some good decisions by the ref too. MORE SOON

Round 2 GIO Schoolboy Cup - Patrician Brothers Blacktown v Hills SHS
PATRICIAN BROTHERS OVERPOWERS HILLS IN IMPRESSIVE VICTORY
Story By : Dan Walsh
Coach Peter Ross says this is the most talented team Patrician Brothers Blacktown has ever produced, and it was hard to argue with him as his side outmuscled two-time defending champions Hills Sports High 24-10 on Wednesday.
In front of an extremely vocal and even more parochial crowd at St Mary’s Leagues Stadium, the boys from Blacktown effectively belted Hills out of semi-finals contention with a near flawless first half display of powerful running and brutal defence.
With the kind of performance that has rivals looking over their shoulders and NRL talent scouts salivating, Ross declared his current side as the finest the prestigious college had produced.
“We’ve had some outstanding teams in the past, but this team’s got that bit of an X factor to it that maybe we haven’t had in the past. We’ve got that pretty good balance of speed and strength and the boys have got a lot of commitment to each other,” said Ross, who has coached the likes of NRL stars Jamie Buhrer and Wade Graham in the past.
And the epitome of that speed and strength was hulking prop Pauli Pauli, whose 60 metre runaway try in the 20th minute drew comparisons with the recent efforts of NSW and Kangaroos star James Tamou.
“[Pauli’s] a front rower in a back’s body or the other way around, I’m not too sure but he’s dynamic, he’s absolutely dynamic. He is that X-factor I spoke about,” Ross said of the Eels Toyota Cup star who also claimed man of the match honours.
“He and a couple of the other boys have got that something special. He’s got a big future ahead of him I believe. Time will tell but so far so good.”
However Pauli, who tips the scales at 110 kg and also recently represented NSW in the Junior State of Origin, laughed off the comparison with the Cowboys enforcer.
“I’m no James Tamou, I thought I was going to get caught because the fullback’s supposed to be the fastest in the team, but somehow I managed to get the extra metre to score the try.”
The Patrician Brothers forward pack, ably led by NSW U/18’s representatives Pauli, Bryce Cartwright and Darwin-born Chris Smith dominated proceedings from the outset, repeatedly bashing and bullying Hills into uncharacteristic errors to provide an excellent platform for their little men to control the game.
Halves Dylan Izzard and Sione Tonga duly obliged, laying on a third minute try to Cartwright before Izzard himself jinked and stepped his way over from short range soon after, while Pauli’s barnstorming effort gave his side a decisive 18-0 halftime lead.
But Hills proved they are not defending champions for nothing, with captain Brandan Attwood registering his side’s first points in the 38th minute when he fell on a pin point grubber from Tigers SG Ball hooker Manaia Cherrington.
As a Hills comeback loomed both sides upped the ante with some heavy if not slightly illegal hitting, thrilling the large crowd and putting the referees and officials on edge, though Hills coach Mark Horo was adamant his team did not lose their heads with the match on the line.
But while the match was won up front, it was one of Blacktown’s little men who sealed the result. Fullback Dallin Watene-Zelezniak proved as hard to catch as his last name is to pronounce, sprinting 50 metres to score in the corner with just seven minutes left.
Izzard’s sideline conversion, his fourth from as many attempts, put the match beyond doubt, and despite a late try from centre Fabian Goodall, Hills finished on the wrong end of the score line for the first time in two years.
Patrician Brothers now face the winless Farrer Agricultural High School, where a win will confirm their progression through to the GIO Cup semi finals, while Hills coach Mark Horo indicated he would view the side’s final pool match against St Gregory’s of Campbelltown as a chance to begin planning for next season’s campaign.
Patrician Brothers Blacktown 24 (B Cartwright, D Izzard, P Pauli, D Watene-Zelezniak tries; D Izzard 4 goals) def. Hills Sports High 10 (B Attwood, F Goodall tries; Z Clay goal) at St Mary’s Leagues Stadium |
Round 2 GIO Schoolboy Cup - Holy Cross v Illawarra SHS
scintillating first half display from Luke Brooks and Mitchell Moses has led Holy Cross College to a 48-16 victory over Illawarra Sports High in the GIO Schoolboys Cup.
The combination between the half and fullback was evident in the opening 25 minutes with Holy Cross racing to a 30-0 lead at half time, with Brooks and Moses both ending the match with two tries each.
Not to be outdone, hooker Bradley Deitz gave the combination an extra dimension out of dummy half, and the trio resembled the Cronk-Slater-Smith partnership which has been successful for so long in Melbourne.
It was Deitz who opened the scoring for Holy Cross in just the 4th minute as he jumped out of acting half and powered his way across in the south-eastern corner of WIN Stadium.
Just two minutes later and Brooks crabbed across field before finding his captain Moses who ran 30 metres down the touchline to score untouched.
The combination of Moses and Brooks played a part in the four other tries in the first half, and coach Tim White says the pair are instrumental to the team’s chances of progressing further in the tournament.
“It’s as good as any combination in an NRL team but the other thing is the other boys need to work around them so they’re part of it but only one piece in the puzzle,” said White.
“We just have to keep playing hard and injuries prevailing we’ll be thereabouts again.
“We still have to win one more game, we have mountains to climb and then we’ll see how we go.
Luke Brooks, who was awarded man of the match honours, was being kept a close eye on in the grandstand with both Andrew Johns and Brad Fittler keen on-lookers.
The Balmain junior says it was an honour being watched by two of his heroes growing up.
“I looked up to them [Fittler and Johns] when I was younger so it was good to have them here watching,” said the halfback, who finished with 20 points for the match.
On the topic of his combination with Mitchell Moses, Brooks says being able to go to school and play SG Ball for Balmain together has helped both their abilities on the park.
“It’s good because we train together, go to school together so we’re practically with each other all the time so it creates a good combination out on the field.
Whilst Holy Cross was impressive in the first half, they took their foot off the pedal after the break with Illawarra Sports High fullback Jackson Hastings leading a mini revival.
He single handedly brought his school back within three converted tries before Holy Cross clicked into gear again to run away with the win.
Tim White says the second half display leaves the team with more improvement ahead of their next group stage match against Westfields Sports High.
“They just lacked a bit of concentration in critical times and that that happens because they’re boys, but they just have to maintain discipline and kick long and see what happens.
“I was happy with the defence early, I wasn’t happy with the defence in the second half but I was happy with the spirit and enthusiasm of the boys and that’s the key factor of the win.”
Holy Cross College 48 (Brooks 2, Moses 2, Moana 2, Camroux, Milone, Deitz tries; Brooks 6/9 goals) defeated Illawarra Sports High 16 (Hastings, Clune, Tom tries; Hastings 2/3 goals) |

WALKER LEADS MATRAVILLE TO VICTORY
Just 72 hours after debuting in South Sydney’s Toyota Cup victory over St George Illawarra, Dylan Walker has led Matraville Sports High to a 60-0 victory against Hunter Sports High at Townsend Oval in Newcastle on Wednesday.
Scoring a try, having a hand in three others and kicking eight goals, Walker says it was important to lead by example following his first match at WIN Jubilee Oval on the weekend.
“It was a great experience, I enjoyed it heaps and it was one of the greatest moments of my life [playing on Sunday],” said Walker.
“I had to bring back what I learned up there and I learnt a lot up there actually.
“I’ve been playing in this competition [GIO Schoolboys Cup] for the last three years so I did have a role to play as a mentor, the captain and the leader out there.”
Matraville Sports High coach Scott Murray accepted post game that Walker is pivotal to his side’s chances of going one better than last year’s grand final defeat to Hills Sports High.
“He’s [Walker] been in the squad for three years now and had his 20’s debut on the weekend so he’s an important part of the team,” said Murray.
“He knows what’s required at this level and there’s a number of players who played SG Ball with Dylan so they’ve got combinations.”
Matraville Sports High led 18 nil at half time on the back of tries from Smith, Tawamcala and Walker, but an avalanche of points in the second half followed with a tired Hunter Sports High team having to make plenty of tackles.
The Newcastle based school was without young guns Sione Mata’utia and Tevita Pangai who were down in Melbourne as part of the NSW Under 16’s squad which is playing Queensland in a curtain raiser to the State of Origin.
Matraville came up the day before the game on Wednesday, and coach Murray said it was to install in the players a sense of how important this competition is.
“We came up yesterday - I wanted them to feel that this important so we stayed up here last night.
“It was disappointing in the end what happened last year but this is a new team and they’ve been watching what has been going on for the last few years and they’ve aspired to play in the opens team.
“We’d like to go all the way for sure.”
Matraville Sports High 60 (Smith 2 tries, Fullick 2 tries, Tawamcala, Walker, W Lolo, G Lolo, Garvey tries; Walker 8/8 goals, Moceidreke 2/2 goals) defeated Hunter Sports High 0 |

LAULU LEADS WESTFIELDS TO VICTORY
Story By : Matthew Rossleigh
A double from giant Westfields Sports High School prop Solomona Laulu was enough for the western Sydney school to claim a 12-10 victory over Illawarra Sports High in the GIO Schoolboys Cup at New Era Stadium in Cabramatta on Wednesday.
GIO Schoolboys Cup
The South Sydney Rabbitohs SG Ball Cup representative, who also earnt man of the match honours, scored his school’s opening try before the half-time break which cancelled out Illawarra’s first try in the sixth minute through winger Cheyne Pike.
With Westfields holding a two point lead going into the break, both teams came out with an increased intensity and the game became more free flowing as first half errors were eradicated.
Illawarra five-eighth Drew Hutchison tried his best to get his school back in front, kicking a 40/20 to open the second half but strong Westfields defence in the following set of six held their opponents out.
With the match going from end to end the next try was going to be crucial and it came through Laulu who showed his strength to crash his way over eleven minutes from full-time.
The prop forward showed great footwork before the line to go past three defenders and dive in next to the uprights, with Brendan Cox’s conversion giving Westfields what seemed to be an unassailable eight point lead with less than ten minutes to play.
However, Dee-jay Harris hit back for Illawarra only a minute later through a crisp, 20metre long cut-out pass from five-eighth Drew Hutchison to cut the margin back to two points.
Westfields thought they had hung on for the win when a kick through from Jake Davison of Illawarra Sports High was knocked on by Cheyne Pike as the siren sounded, but referee Jeff Hartup awarded a penalty to Illawarra for a player being tackled without the ball.
Centre Dee-jay Harris elected to take the shot at goal from 40 metres out on the touchline to earn a draw for his school, but his attempt went agonisingly wide of the right upright, with Westfields hanging on to claim the opening win of the 2012 competition.
Westfields will play Erindale in their next pool match, while Illawarra will meet Holy Cross as they look to earn their first victory of the competition.
WESTFIELDS SPORTS HIGH SCHOOL 12 (Solomona Laulu 2 tries; Brendan Cox 2/2 goals) defeated ILLAWARRA SPORTS HIGH SCHOOL 10 (Cheyne Pike, Dee-jay Harris tries; Dee-jay Harris 1/3 goals). |
GIO SCHOOLBOYS TROPHY: HALLAM TOP OF VICTORIAN SCHOOLS
The final of the Victorian arm of the GIO Schoolboys Trophy took place on Wednesday May 23 at Cross Keys Oval in Essendon, where Hallam Senior College took on the Victorian University Secondary College.
In cool conditions in the Victorian capital, Hallam started the match strongly and opening the scoring when Joseph Watene-Lauina ran 40 meters to score the opening try of the match. Hallam made it two in a row when Francis Tualau crossed after some good lead-up work by Pride Petterson-Robati.
Victoria University hit back with a try to prop Henry Sang-Yum to make it 12 -4 close to the break, but a runaway try to Hallam right on half time gave the College a convincing 18 – 4 lead.
Despite a tight and physical arm wrestle between the two teams in the second half, Victoria University wasn’t able to convert their opportunities into points, something that Hallam made them pay on as they ran out eventual 50 – 8 winners.
Hallam Senior College 50 (Pride Petterson-Robati 3, Romia Matangaro 2, Francis Tualau 1, Joseph Watene-Lauina 1, Brandon Manase 1, Dillan Brittain 1 try. Petterson-Robati 5 goals, Kemu Valetini 2 goals) def Vic Uni Secondary College 8 (Henry Sang-Yum, Beau Collier tries). |
