ST JOHN'S SET UP SEMI-FINAL CLASH WITH DE LA SALLE

St John's College is into the final four of the statewide Combined Catholic Colleges schoolboys under-14s knockout competition following a 38-0 victory over Corpus Christi Oak Flats from Illawarra on Thursday.

The Dubbo school scored seven tries in the victory, which has seen them set up a tough semi-final clash with De La Salle Carringbah next week in Bathurst.

St John's coach Justin McCarney was very impressed with his teams defence, with Group 11 representatives Jack Quinn, Kane McDermott, Charlie Bible, Baden Searle, Joden Wilson, Ashley Dunlop and Jack Davis were very strong for the Dubbo side.

Although St John's scored three tries in the first half and four tries in the second, Corpus Christi were very willing in defence and forced the locals into having to really work for their tries.

A number of unforced errors by St John's in the early tackles will have to be addressed before they take on the top Sydney side.

To reach the state semi-final St John's have beaten Red Bend College (Forbes), St Stanislaus College (Bathurst), James Sheahan (Orange), Kildare (Wagga) and Corpus Christi.

ST JOHN'S COLLEGE 38 (Baden Searle 2, Charlie Bible 2, Ashley Dunlop, Paddy Haycock, Bill Cornish tries; Matt Burton 5 goals) defeated CORPUS? CHRISTI 0

WOODLAWN CUT DOWN IN CLASH

AN OBSTRUCTION penalty denied Woodlawn fullback Jay Meaney the match-winning try in a 24-20 loss against St Gregory's College Campbelltown in the Combined Catholic Colleges Cup in Lismore.

Woodlawn looked set to make it to the quarter-finals of the state-wide competition until the Meaney try was disallowed.

Scores were locked 20-all at fulltime sending the game into extra-time.

There were five-minute halves with the winner decided by first try scorer in extra time. It almost went the full 10 minutes before Campbelltown winger Chris Debrincat scored the match-winner after some brilliant footwork out wide.

"We've been training since the first term and we really thought we could have got away with a win today," coach Simon Andrews said.

"Some decisions didn't go our way but it probably was an obstruction at the end there.

"This is one of the best teams I've been associated with and one of the best games I've ever seen out here.

"We couldn't have done anything more and we'll look to win the second-tier plate division now.

"Half the team are in year 10 so its looking pretty good for the future."

Halfback Jacob Follent controlled the game with his kicking and Anthony Colman was outstanding and best on the field at second row.

Centre Sam Elliot, hooker Zac Beecher, lock Kyle Kennedy and Meaney were the try-scorers for Woodlawn.

Andrews also made special mention of five-eighth Nick Meaney, centre Max Elliot and prop Hamish Cannon.
