PENINSULA RUNS WITH TALENT

Skills: Robert Jawai (with ball) does a passing drill with Nathan Kepa yesterday.
PENINSULA coach Rod Whittle says his side's strength is also its weakness going into tomorrow's opening day of the Queensland secondary schools under-18 rugby league championships.

Tyranny of distance dictates that Peninsula only had its first run together as a unit at Cairns’ Mann St fields yesterday, giving the side an unknown factor going into the championships in Ipswich.

Whittle said the fact Peninsula would be unpredictable could benefit or hinder his side but was confident individual talent would offset the lack of preparation as a unit.

"We’ll play with the spirit and enthusiasm Peninsula is renowned for, and the creative brilliance," he said. "But it will come down to if we can execute the plays we need to."

Peninsula meets Metropolitan East, grand finalists for the past three years, in what Whittle said shapes as a "torrid test" tomorrow.

Whittle said there was no shortage of talented players in his squad with Nathan Kepa and Nathan Wales starring on the representative scene.

Kepa crossed for a try and was named player of the match in the Queensland Murris team’s 22-18 victory over NSW Kooris in their under-16 curtain-raiser to the Test match between Australia and New Zealand last Friday night.

Wales is a member of the Queensland under-16 team while Tyson Brookes has shown his class in the Cairns and District Rugby League A grade premiership with the Atherton Roosters.

Whittle said Western Cape College pair Craig Budby and Robert Jawai (Weipa), and Tagai College’s Morrison Mosby (Torres Strait Islands), had already made special efforts to travel vast distances just to qualify for the team.

The second half proved to be close with Atherton scoring twice and cowboys crossing once to take the score to 16 - 10 with 6 minutes to go.

Atherton knocked on from the kick-off and Cowboys capitalised scoring and backed it up with another try before full time to take the game 28 - 10.

Innisfail Cowboys will now play Cairns Kangaroos JRL in the FNQ final as the curtain to the Northern Pride game, 4.15pm at Barlow Park, 17th May 2008.

NORTHERN DIVISION - UNDER 15’S ARL DEVELOPMENT SHIELD 2008

MATCH DURATION
Two halves, each of 30 minutes and no time off for injury and stoppages, unless the first aid officer on duty calls for an ambulance. Half-time will be 10 minutes, unless otherwise agreed to by the two competing Clubs.

DRAWN MATCHES
For all Shield matches, if the scores are tied after normal period of play, a ‘sudden death’ period will be played.

The ‘sudden death’ period will be 2 x 5 minutes halves with no half time break and will have no time off for injury and stoppages.

TO ENABLE THIS TO TAKE PLACE:

· The Referee will call both Captains together for a coin toss;
· The Captain winning the toss will have the option of choosing which end of the field to defend, or alternatively may elect to kick off to commence play.

If the team winning the toss elects to kick off, the choice of ends reverts to the team losing the toss.

The team which scores first points as awarded by the Referee during the ‘sudden death’ period will be declared the winner and the Referee will end the match immediately.

If there is no additional score during the ‘sudden death’ period, the winner of the match will be determined using the following basis;
· most tries, then (if equal);
· first try scored, then (if no tries);
· first score, then (if no score);
· most penalties received, then (if equal);
· first penalty received, then (if no penalties);
· toss of a coin (if no tries, no points scored, no penalties)

A number of matches have been decided by this count back rule when a draw has occurred.

Therefore the importance of keeping an accurate record of the penalty count is stressed.

KNOTTING/BUNDLING OF JERSEYS BANNED
The Board of Directors, at its meeting on the 14 March 2008, clarified the League’s position on knotting/bundling of jerseys.

The current practice of ‘knotting’ (pulling together and tying a knot in the jersey) or ‘bundling’ (pulling together in a bundle or tail and taping) as a method for tightening the fit of a rugby league jersey is no longer permitted.

The elimination of this practice is due to concerns of possible injuries to both the player wearing it and those involved in making a tackle.

Players with loose fitting jerseys should ‘tuck’ the jersey inside their shorts and fix by tightening the drawstring on the shorts. ‘Folding’ (folding it over itself like a sheet and fixing with tape) is also permitted.

Please circulate this advice to all Rugby League Bodies and Personnel within the Division so that they are fully aware of and adhere to the Board’s decision.

NORTHERN NEWCOMERS CRUSH FINS
Story By : QRL
NORTHERN Pride has stamped itself as a genuine Wizard Cup premiership contender with a convincing 32-18 victory over the Redcliffe Dolphins.

Year after year Redcliffe has turned Dolphin Oval into a graveyard for visiting teams but it was the beaming Pride players who left the field amid a flurry of back slaps and high fives.

“It was our first big test really,” Pride coach Andrew Dunemann said from outside a buzzing dressing room.

“We know we’ll win a few games this year but we were coming into the unknown a bit today because we haven’t played a team away from home.

“The boys, as I thought they would, got in there and played some pretty good footy.

“I thought the scoreboard could have been a bit more lopsided than what it was.”

Ignited by a superb performance from Cowboys-contracted hooker David Faiumu, the Pride raced in three early tries to lead 16-4.

Faiumu had a hand in the first try of the match, with his clever grub kick leading to a Gorden Rattler four-pointer in the opening minutes.

The skilful rake was at it again midway through the first half when he sent a neat pass on to the chest of Matthew Bartlett.

Bartlett crashed over to put the Pride in front 16-4.

The try was the perfect response for the visiting side after Redcliffe’s Liam Georgetown scored against the run of play.

Three of Redcliffe’s four tries came from kicks, while the other came after a handling mistake from Pride fullback Chey Bird.

But that was Bird’s only blemish.

The classy fullback made a number of sizzling kick returns and his last-ditch cover defence thwarted promising Redcliffe raids on two occasions.

The Pride led 16-12 at half-time and were in complete control upon the resumption following three quick tries to Warren Jensen, Josh Vaughan and Ty Williams.

Williams’ try was a cracker.

Following a scrum win, the former Queensland winger put on a classic ‘in and away’ to leave a flat-footed Chris Fox in his wake.

As impressive as the try was, Faiumu was the real trump card for the Cairns-based club.

“He’s a New Zealand international so he’s going to obviously add to your team,” Dunemann said.

“He came here with a really good attitude as did Ty (Williams). When they come with good attitudes it’s easy for them to fit straight in and they did that.

“It’s a dream for me because it’s easy for blokes to come in and not have a good attitude. But I’ve been lucky so far. The ones that I’ve had have really good attitudes and they want to play here.”

Hard working forwards Joel Reithmuller and Mark Cantoni also impressed Dunemann.

LATE RAID LIFTS MAGPIES

SOUTHS Logan coach Paul Bramley has praised the professionalism of the Magpies’ exciting Canberra Raiders contingent following his side’s impressive 32-16 victory over the Easts Tigers.

Raiders players Colin Best, Michael Weyman, Cy Lasscock, David Milne, Marc Herbert and Michael Dobson linked with the Magpies for Saturday’s round two clash at Langlands Park.

The Canberra connection didn’t disappoint, helping the Magpies to a crucial victory.

“They were absolute professionals,” Bramley said.

“They realise the only way to get back up there with Neil (Henry) is to play well up here.”

However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the new-look Magpies.

Easts looked the sharper of the two sides in the opening half on their way to a 16-6 lead at the break.

But the Magpies finished with a flurry of points in the second half.

“It was obviously a new team. We knew what we wanted to do and where we wanted to go but we were just a bit impatient,” Bramley said.

Bramley said the Magpies finished “much stronger” than Easts.

He said strength and conditioning coach Al Parker deserved praise for lifting the players’ fitness levels.

Easts coach Darren Smith felt a high injury toll contributed to the Tigers’ second half demise.

The Tigers, who have now lost back-to-back games, had to soldier on without five-eighth Isaac Kaufmann and fullback Wade Liddell.

Both players left the field with concussion.

To make matters worse, Kev Stephensen (head knock) and Scott Sipple (suspected broken hand) were also struggling.

“It was a casualty ward,” Smith said.

“We thought someone was throwing in hand grenades with all the bodies on the ground.”

Easts welcome the bye in round three, while the Magpies travel to Rockhampton for a clash with the Comets.

BUSTLING BEARS CRUSH COMETS

BURLEIGH has piled on 30-unaswered points in the second half to crush the Central Comets in their round two clash at Pizzey Park.

The Comets had entered Saturday night’s match on the Gold Coast in high spirits following their big win over the Norths Devils in the opening round.

But the visiting side couldn’t go with Burleigh in the second half. The rejuvenated Bears posted seven second half tries to secure a 40-10 victory and back-to-back wins.

Burleigh made a bright start to the match, with centre Adam Fielder pouncing on a clever grubber kick from Ben Black to open the scoring.

But the rest of the half was a tight affair, with the Bears unable to break the committed Comets.

Burleigh scored just before half-time to sneak into the break with a slender 10-6 lead.

“We probably let ourselves down a bit in the first half with our ball control,” Bears coach Jim Lenihan said.

“It was pleasing (the second half). We had a bit more ball control and obviously the result speaks for itself.”

Hooker Scott Smith, forward Martin Griese and winger Aseri Laing were the standouts for the Bears.

Griese finished with two tries, while Fielder also bagged a double in another impressive performance.

Burleigh will now be eyeing off a hat-trick of victories when it meets Tweed Heads in Saturday’s local derby at Cudgen.

The Comets face a tough ask against an in-form Souths Logan team.

SEAGULLS PREVAIL IN SCRAPPY CONTEST

THE Mackay Cutters have shown they could be a force in this year’s competition, putting up a valiant fight against powerhouse Wynnum Manly before eventually going down 18-10 at BMD Kougari Oval.

The match was marred by errors and penalties, with both teams ensuring attack will be the main focus at training this week.

Twenty five minutes had passed in the game before the first try was scored by Wynnum’s replacement forward Cameron Joyce, the 15000th in Queensland Cup history.

Five minutes later, former Newcastle Knight David Seage swooped on his own grubber kick to score a try Allan Langer would have been proud of.

At this point many thought the game would blow out.

But Mackay showed remarkable improvement from the first round where they leaked 44 points against the Northern Pride.

The game changed dramatically on the stroke of half-time when a break and magic pass from North Queensland Cowboys recruit Anthony Watts resulted in a Daniel Abraham try.

Wynnum Manly led 12-6 at half-time but the sloppy handling continued in the second half.

It took a piece of individual brilliance from Cutters livewire Aaron Barba to bring the game back to life.

Barba displayed amazing speed and determination to reach out and score from a short grubber kick behind the Wynnum line.

Mackay didn’t worry the scoreboard attendant again, but continued to mix the good with the bad by defending stoutly, giving away penalties and dropping the ball after promising raids.

Wynnum were poor at times in the second half, but the Bayside club always looked like winning with so many experienced players.

And with 25 minutes remaining, one such player, Canterbury recruit Dallas McIlwain, broke the line and stepped two to score underneath the posts.

McIlwain and tireless captain Darren Bain were the best for the Seagulls.

DEVILS ERASE ROUND ONE MEMORIES

A YOUNG Norths Devils outfit has put the disappointment of last week’s opening round loss to the Central Comets behind them, outlasting Tweed Heads 20-12 at Bishop Park.

The Devils led Tweed 16-0 early in the second half and survived a late scare from last season’s premiers to open their account.

“We took a big step forward from what we did last week,” Norths coach Mark Gee said.

“Last week we were pretty ordinary. When the boys reviewed the performance against the Comets they were pretty disappointed.”

The Seagulls put a major fright through the Devils when Brenton Bowen and Dennis Gordon scored converted tries in the second half.

But Tweed couldn’t land the killer blow, despite a glut of possession.

“We got hammered in the penalty count 14-5 which is something we need to address,” Gee said.

“We worked hard all day. We didn’t deserve to lose the game but they (Tweed) still had a few chances to win the game late in the match.”

Hooker Marc Brentnall and classy centre Luke Samoa impressed for the Devils, who face the daunting prospect of playing the red-hot Northern Pride in Cairns next week.

“We’re going to need to be on our game and show the same commitment to test them,” Gee said.

Although his side came up empty handed, Tweed coach Michael Woods described the Seagulls’ performance as a “much improved showing”

“We didn’t control the ball and our last play options were a bit poor,” Woods said.

“We were in the game all the way until the last two minutes when they scored a break away try.”

For the second-straight week, Tweed entered the match without premiership-winning playmakers Brad Davis and Matt King.

But Woods said the Seagulls still had enough talent on the park to win the match.

“We probably lacked a bit of composure,” he said.

“But I’m not going to put that down to not having Brad or Matt there.”

TWEED HEADS v REDCLIFFE
Ned Byrne Oval, Cudgen – Saturday March 15, 2pm (Qld EST) *Live on ABC TV
Referee: Gavin Morris
NEW Tweed Heads coach Mick Woods enters the grand final re-match without two of the stars of the Seagulls’ 2007 campaign. Key five-eighth Brad Davis and classy hooker Matt King have been ruled out through injury. Matthew Nuttall, who played in Tweed’s title-winning Colts team last season, has been named in the No. 6 jersey for the Cudgen blockbuster.

Tweed is playing its first match at Cudgen, a renowned rugby league stronghold, after an off-season move from Piggabeen. Redcliffe has named former Penrith flyer Liam Georgetown on the wing and has rewarded promising young gun Michael Wilson with a spot on the interchange bench following an outstanding pre-season. Troy Lindsay, the most capped player in the Queensland Cup, makes his 244th appearance for the Dolphins.

EASTS v BURLEIGH
Langlands Park - Saturday March 15, 3pm
Referee: Nick Kalpakidis
FOLLOWING a sluggish pre-season, Burleigh faces its moment of truth at Langlands Park on Saturday. The Bears have been written off by many following three-straight trial match defeats. However, Bears coach Jimmy Lenihan is quietly confident his new-look team will fire in the premiership opener.

Burleigh has several new faces in key attacking positions following the retirements of Adam Hayden and Ryan Gundry. Brent McConnell is the new five-eighth, with former Young Guns star Scott Smith filling the No. 9 jersey in the wake of Gundry’s departure. Giant props Charlie Tonga and Pat Gardner spearhead a formidable Easts Tigers forward pack. Former Rabbitoh Trent Young is the Easts captain for 2008.

IPSWICH v WYNNUM MANLY
Briggs Road Sporting Complex – Saturday March 15, 3pm
Referee: Justin Eastwood
IPSWICH plays its first premiership match at the refurbished Briggs Road Complex in many years on Saturday after an off-season move from QLD Group Stadium. Jets coach Kevin Walters has an embarrassment of riches at his disposal, with as many as seven Titans players in line for a game with Ipswich.

The situation has created a major selection headache for Walters, who already had a strong team at his disposal. Wynnum Manly unveils its new recruits, with all eyes expected to be on the performances of former NRL players David Seage and Dallas McIlwain. Seage is playing his 114th match for the Seagulls after returning to the Bayside club following an injury-plagued stint with Newcastle. McIlwain, a former Bulldog, has been named at five-eighth.

NORTHERN PRIDE v MACKAY CUTTERS
Barlow Park – Saturday March 15, 6pm
Referee: Justin Davis
THE two northern newcomers face off in an explosive round one clash at Barlow Park on Saturday. Northern Pride operations manager Chris Sheppard expects a 5000-strong crowd at the Cairns venue if the rain stays away. On paper, both sides appear evenly matched.

The Pride and Cutters have received a sprinkling of talent from the North Queensland Cowboys. The Cutters did not win a trial game, but player/coach Shane Muspratt believes his charges are primed for a breakthrough victory. Muspratt will partner Luke Young in an exciting halves combination. The pair will go head-to-head with the slippery Sheppard brothers – Chris and Steve.

CENTRAL V NORTHS
Browne Park – Saturday March 15, 7.30pm
Referee: Robert Gallacher
GIANT Broncos prop David Taylor has been named in the Central side for the Wizard Cup opener in Rockhampton. Taylor has already turned out for the Comets in the pre-season following the club’s newly-formed partnership with the Brisbane Broncos. Taylor will go head-to-head with in-form Devils prop Will Scanlon, one of the Nundah-based club’s most consistent performers.

The young Devils will fancy their chances of opening the season with a victory following an impressive pre-season under new coach Mark Gee. Fringe Broncos players Joel Moon and Denan Kemp will ensure Gee has an array of attacking talent at his disposal in Saturday’s clash.

Brisbane 2nd Division logoHUGE INTEREST IN 2ND DIVISION

SEVENTY-THREE teams from 43 clubs have registered for the Brisbane Second Division season.

In a major boost, the league has welcomed the addition of an extra eight teams and one club following the successful 2007 season.

The Southside competitions will again be run in four grades – compared to three grades in 2007.

Clubs which are new, or returning to the League in 2008, are Albany Creek, Greenbank, Kallangur Bulls, Norths St Josephs, Nundah Devils and Souths Graceville.

Brisbane Second Division Chairman Mick Tierney said one of the most pleasing aspects of the nominations was the extra interest in the Arthur Sparks Shield (Under 20).

The league received 13 nominations, a massive increase on last season.

The league’s major sponsor again this year is Castlemaine Perkins XXXX. The associate sponsors are AlphaSport and Struddys Sports.

All competitions will commence on Saturday, March 8.

BIG WET HURTS CUTTERS

ROOKIE coach Shane Muspratt spends hours mopping up four inches of water from his home, CEO Greg Sutherland races around town cooking sausages for battling locals and young centre Anthony Caulton (pictured) works himself to a standstill in the big clean up at Super A-Mart.

These are just a few of the amazing stories which have gripped the Mackay Cutters rugby league team over the last week.

The dramatic hardship caused by the severe flooding has rocked the Cutters’ preparations ahead of their first season in the tough Wizard Cup competition.

But the setbacks haven’t broken the squad’s spirit, with Cutters Operations Manager Jamie McDonald describing the experience as character building.

Remarkably, the Cutters players haven’t touched a football for a group ball session in a week and a half.

“It has been really hard to find a ground,” McDonald says.

“Every ground has been closed because they’re waterlogged. It’s been raining for a good month now – solid.”

The downpour forced the cancellation of Mackay’s opening trial against the Northern Pride last weekend.

But with the sun finally breaking through today, McDonald is confident this Saturday’s trial against Wynnum Manly at Sarina will be the perfect tonic for the Cutters.

The Cutters have been restricted to indoor sessions, but desperate to get some “miles in their legs”, headed for the hills for a series of grueling sprints this week.

“It has been frustrating, but at the end of the day there is not much you can do about it,” McDonald says.

“We’re looking at it from the point of view that it could be character building for us.”

The Cutters open their premiership season with an intriguing first round clash against the Northern Pride on March 15.

NORTHERN PRIDE GAME CANCELLED

Due to the adverse weather conditions in Mackay, the trial game against Mackay Cutters at Moranbah scheduled for this weekend was cancelled.

The Cowboys Under 20’s will be travelling to Cairns and a trial game against CRGT Northern Pride will be played at the Junior Rugby League Grounds, Mann St, Westcourt, this Saturday at 4pm.

Gates open at 3pm with an adult entrance fee of $5. There will be kiosk facilities available, and there are limited Corporate boxes available.

We would love to see as many of you as possible come along to support the team tomorrow.
Nth Qld Cowboys logoFNQ COACHING UPDATE

The North Queensland Cowboys would like to invite all interested people to attend a Coach Update on Friday the 22nd of February leading into our trial game in Cairns on the 23rd of February.

The update will be held at Cairns Junior Rugby League grounds at Mann Street from 6pm through to 7.30pm. Cowboy’s NRL Assistant Coach Matt Parish will be conducting the update.

Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for a moderately practical skills session.

STOP POACHING PLAYERSSTOP POACHING PLAYERS CLUBS RISK $2,000.00 FINE

Junior Rugby League clubs within the Brisbane area are at risk of being fined $2,000.00 if a member of their club is charged and found guilty of poaching players from another club. Individual persons charged and found guilty of poaching junior players face a two year ban.

Each year Junior Rugby League clubs expend considerable resources in outfitting, training and developing their staff and junior players and rightfully expect a little loyalty.

The poaching of players from one club to another means that in each individual club there is a level of uncertainty as to whether or not they will have sufficient players to form a team in a particular age group.

"Each year we receive numerous complaints of individuals approaching players from other clubs to entice them to leave their existing club and join another and this year is no different" stated Greg Koehler, Executive Officer of the Greater Brisbane Junior Rugby League.

"History has shown that many who succumb to the enticement to change clubs find out that the grass is not always greener at the new club and soon regret the decision to relocate.

Notwithstanding, we have rules in place that prohibit the poaching of junior players and be assured any person charged an found guilty of a breach of the rules will be penalised"

Koehler suggests any person involved in enticing players from one club to another reconsider their actions as it is highly likely that their identity will be made known to the League.

"The rugby league network is one of the fastest means of communication I know" said Koehler.

GBJRL Rule 5.24 - POACHING OF PLAYERS states:

5.24.1 Definition of "Poaching". For the purpose of this rule, poaching is defined as a direct approach to a player or an indirect approach through an agent to a player, by a coach or any official or anyone associated with a Club, to entice that player to move from the Club that player is registered with to play for any other Club in Queensland.

5.24.2 Definition of "Enticement". Enticement can mean anything from the promise of playing conditions, to payment or promise of payment or a consideration of any kind. Notwithstanding this definition, it is the actual approach to the player that constitutes a breach of the Rule.

5.24.3 Rule. No coach, manager, official nor anyone associated with a rugby league football club or team, shall poach a player registered with any other Rugby League Club in Queensland. This means a player currently registered or registered in the immediate past season.

5.24.4 Penalty.

(a). Any coach, manager or club official found guilty of poaching a player will face a penalty, which may include suspension of their Coaching Accreditation.

(b). Any Club official found guilty of poaching a player faces a maximum penalty of exclusion from holding any position in Rugby League in Queensland.

A coach, team or club official or anyone associated with a rugby league football club or team charged and found guilty of poaching can expect a minimum ban of 2 years from participating in junior rugby league. Clubs can expect a minimum fine of $2,000.00.

BOOM TIME FOR NORTHS JUNIORS

NORTHS rugby league club hope to inject around $100,000 into the creation of more playing fields to cope with the influx of junior players.

In an innovative move, Norths had a house constructed in the Caboolture Shire suburb of Burpengary with the aim of auctioning it on February 2.

With a majority of the labour donated or provided at reduced rates, the Devils have hopes to make a $100,000 profit.

More room is needed at the club's inner northern Brisbane headquarters at Bishop Park, Nundah, as Brisbane junior league booms.

Since 2004, the club has grown from 12 teams and 200 kids to 18 teams and more than 300 kids.

"And this season we should have more than 20 teams,'' club president Peter Fraser said.

"We are running out of space for training.

"We are trying to raise funds to build another mini mod football field.''

Fraser and assistant treasurer Kerry McLean initially tried to make financial inroads by selling raffles tickets.

"But you can't generate funds like that,'' he said, comparing the potential financial windfall generated by the Burpengary house."

With the help of builder Peter Luckman, from Path Developments Pty Ltd, the likelihood of generating a six-figure sum excited Fraser.

He said Norths' growth was consistent with other clubs in Brisbane.

The Greater Brisbane junior league, which involves around 11,000 kids, is regarded as the largest in Australia, a bigger nursery than the Penrith junior base which for years has boasted enviable player numbers.

"You get to the stage where you are bursting at the seams,'' Fraser said, referring to training nights at Bishop Park.

"The idea is to give us more training room. Trying to get 20 teams to train during the week, you have five teams training on a field at any one time. It gets a little congested.''

The property is at Lot 148, Kimberley Drive, Burpengary.
THE ONES THAT GOT AWAY
Story By : Mackay Daily Mercury
RUGBY LEAGUE: Meet the new breed of players set to make their mark on the inaugural season of the national under 20 competition.

Eight of the hottest players from around our region will line up with clubs across Queensland and New South Wales.

But only three of them will be with the North Queensland Cowboys, despite the club having a squad of 25 to 30 which includes three New Zealand players and one Cronulla recruit.

Mackay rugby league identity Steve Nielsen said he felt the Cowboys "could have done more", considering the high calibre of Mackay players who have signed with other NRL clubs for the under 20 competition.

"It's a bit disappointing that there hasn't been more Mackay boys signed by the Cowboys, especially as it is such a big squad," he said.

"The talent in Mackay is as strong as it has ever been."

But 2007 Mackay Sea Eagles under 19 coach Steve Jackson, whose side was one of three Mackay rugby league representative outfits to struggle last year, said a lack of preparation by Mackay teams has put them at a disadvantage against other North Queensland centres and could be the reason for the city's representation at the Cowboys.

"We have talented boys but their preparation hasn't been up to standard," Jackson said.

"It's not a lack of depth, because ability-wise we are up there with Townsville and Cairns.

"We don't train enough and we aren't dedicated enough.

"But the ability is definitely there."

Cowboys football operations manager Peter Jones said from his club's perspective there was "no particular reason" for the low number of Mackay players in the Cowboys' under 20 squad.

"It is very important for us to be seen to have local kids in our squad," he said.

"The majority of our players, about 90%, are from North and Central Queensland."

Jones said the Cowboys had pursued a number of other players from Mackay, including boom prospect Ben Barba.
