Will Matthews ready to play NRL
MATTHEWS A TOUGH YOUNG TITAN
GoldCoast bulletin
LEGENDARY hitman Trevor `The Axe' Gillmeister likes the toughness about baby-faced rookie Titan Will Matthews.

"He is young, but he is hard and he is tough," said the Gold Coast club's assistant coach.

"You can't coach toughness, you just hope that your players have it.

"What I like about this kid is that he has come from the bush, gone straight into the Queensland Cup and been able to handle that level.

"He just seems to be one of those kids who can handle whatever you throw at him. It is still very early days yet but I think he has the attributes to go all the way."

From Kyogle, just an hour and a half's drive south of the Gold Coast, the big 19-year-old forward is a living example of what the Titans birth was all about -- keeping talented young footballers close to home.

"The fact that I am still near home is extremely important," said Matthews.

"You hear so many stories of kids going to Sydney and not being able to cope.

It's great being so close to family and their support. I still hear from Mum every week and see them every few weeks."

Matthews moved to the Gold Coast last year so that he could be part of the rugby league program at Palm Beach Currumbin State High School.

While there he played schoolboy rep football with another young giant, the Brisbane Broncos human wrecking ball David Taylor.

While Taylor went on to play NRL this year, Matthews starred at a tier below, for Tweed Heads Seagulls in the Queensland Cup.

Although Taylor has impressed with his size and raw power, there are also plenty of good judges who are talking up Matthews' ball skills.

"He certainly is big enough, in fact he will be losing a few kilos with us, but he has some very good skills with his hands," says Gillmeister.

"I have seen a fair bit of him and, just like Carty (head coach John Cartwright), I have a high opinion of him.

"He has that ability to get a ball away. It will come down to the trials when we see how he goes. But we are not scared to toss a few of the younger blokes in and see how they go."

Matthews is relishing his chance to train alongside some of the biggest names in the NRL -- Scott Prince, Luke Bailey and Mat Rogers -- however he is also careful not to get carried away with the atmosphere.

"I just want to keep my head on and stay focused," he said.

"I want a big off-season, not get ahead of myself, hopefully play a couple of the trials, maybe a first grade game. But we will see what happens."

Criticised for being too small in their debut season, the Titans certainly do not have that problem for 2008 with a much bigger bunch of forwards, meaning Matthews has some big opposition for a spot in the pack.

He said playing against open age footballers for the first time this year was not too huge a leap and he wants to test his body against the best.

"It is certainly not a case of fear, but the speed and physical side (of the Queensland Cup) took a little while to get used to," said Matthews.

"But I don't doubt myself at NRL level. I think I will be able to handle it.

"The atmosphere at training has been great. I look up to people like 'Bails' (co-captain Luke Bailey) and take notice of whatever he has to say. But all the older blokes have been very supportive and really look after the younger guys."

Matthews said his ideal role on a football field would be as a ball-playing backrower, like a Sonny Bill Williams or Steve Menzies.

"I love to throw a pass," he said.

"I don't mind the tough stuff but would like to be more than just straight and hard."

Although Matthews said he loves the Gold Coast and is becoming a 'city boy' he will never able to fully become a Queenslander.

If he progresses to the State of Origin level NSW will always be home.

"That's where I was born. That's who I have always gone for, so that is who I would have to play for," he said.

Will Matthews played his 5th game off the bench for the Tweed Heads Seagulls on Sunday 19 May.

With quick thinking and on the mark tackling, Will’s game looks to be maturing hard and fast.

Will who trains full time with the Titans was spotted and signed as a 17 year old playing for the Kyogle Turkeys in the Morgan River Comp in northern NSW.

After moving to Queensland’s Gold Coast, Will enrolled in the Rugby League Excellence program at Palm-Beach Currumbin and started playing for the Tweed Heads Seagulls.

interview vThis move enabled him to be selected for the South Coast Opens Schoolboys team where he was selected to play for the Qld Opens Schoolboys team at the 2006 State Championships carnival held at Kougari Oval.

The 2006 Qld Opens Schoolboys who won the National Titles at Port Macquarie was the opener Will needed to be selected for the Australian Schoolboys team for their tour of England at the end of last year.

After missing representative opportunities for NSW, Will who plays in the forwards has had success after success with his promising Rugby League career in Queensland.

Watch out Luke Bailey and Brad Meyers, because this young talent isn’t long off moving from training sessions to running the field.

The Tweed Heads clubs boasts a few of Will Matthews mates, and he plays with former Australian Schoolboys team mates Shannon Walker, Chris Sandow and Cameron White from Tamworth in NSW.

Chris Sandow will team up with Nathan Strudwick, Obe Geia, and the boys for Queensland U19's to play NSW in the curtain raiser to this years State of Origin opener at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Queensland boys take on a star studded NSW side which features NRL players Chris Lawrence from WestsTigers & year 12 schoolboy at Endeavour SHS, Chase Stanley from the Dragons.

Late mail is Chase Stanley is not playing for NSW, he injured his thumb playing against the Titans on Friday night. Chase is to be replaced by the Bulldogs HEKI NANAI

THE somewhat rubbery rules of the ARL?s State of Origin selection and eligibility criteria means that, should he be good enough, born and bred Kyogle boy Will Matthews may one day play for the dreaded Cane Toads.

That day will actually come sooner rather than later.

Matthews, and classy Kyogle Turkeys first grade fullback, Shannon Walker, are currently in the new NRL franchise Gold Coast Titans? development squad.

The pair, who played starring roles in the Turkeys' Under-18s premiership last season, will join forces again for Queensland at the national titles in Port Macquarie on July 10.

As the ARL rules stand, a player must play State of Origin for the State where he made his first grade debut.

Matthews' last season in NSW was with the Turkeys' Under-18s.

The 17-year-old second-rower now plays under the watchful eye of the Titans with the Tweed Heads Seagulls' Under-19s in the Queensland Cup.

He is likely to play first grade with the club next season.

Walker, also 17, has already made his first grade debut with the Turkeys and is currently calling the shots from fullback.

But before misty-eyed, dyed-in-the-Blue-wool NSW supporters jump the gun, remember these two words: Greg Inglis. Inglis has played Origin for Queensland but there has been debate that he should be playing for NSW, having spent his first 15 years on the North Coast but playing his first senior football aged 16 in Brisbane.

Or, for those with longer memories: Ken Nagas, the former Kyogle junior who starred at the Canberra Raiders and played Origin for NSW in 1994. Queensland-raised Nagas, formerly of Bundaberg, should have played for the Maroons but he played first grade while spending a year in Casino as a schoolboy, which made him eligible for NSW.

Regardless, that scenario is far from the mind of young Matthews, who is keen to put his head over the ball and get on with it.

His development has been steady. "It's great to have a chance to prove myself and try and make a name for myself, I guess," he said.

"I've always had confidence in myself and I just need time to shine. "(Eventual) State of Origin will be great but all I want to do is to keep improving and hopefully make it to first grade (with the Titans)." A true measure of any footballer's ability can be determined by how they respond to certain on-field situations. In Matthews' case, it's the ability to rise to another level.

"It's exciting playing against people with more experience than me," Matthews said. "I'm a bit surprised (with myself) because my game has improved a lot.

"I just have a bit more knowledge of the game now and what to do in certain situations. Physically, that area's improved, too."

Walker's development has followed similar lines but a measure of his progress comes in a different guise.

"I do cop a bit of extra attention (from the opposition) in first grade now," he said.

"In nearly every game I get targetted. I sometimes cop a high shot but I'm used to it now and just play my own game, really.

"You sort of grow up, in a sense, with the attention but you just got to rise above that."

The Titans have signed some key personnel of late. The most recent is Dragons prop Michael Henderson, who joins the likes of Frank Puletua (Panthers), Luke Bailey (Dragons), Anthony Laffranchi (Tigers), Luke Swain (Panthers), Brad Meyers (former Brisbane Bronco, Bradford), Nathan Friend (Storm), Luke O'Dwyer (Eels), Steve Turner (Storm), Preston Campbell (Panthers), Brian Carney (Newcastle), Scott Prince (Tigers) and Richie Mathers (Rhinos).
