AIS OUTCLASS YOUNG LIONS Great Britain Community Lions U18s 12 v 52 Australian Institute of Sport
Leigh Sporting Village Story by : Daniel McKenzie
The Australian Institute of Sport have won the Discovery Cup tri-series after a convincing victory over the Great Britain Community Lions at Leigh Sports Village.
The final game of the series was scheduled to be played in St. Helens but had to be relocated because of a frozen pitch at the GPW Recruitment Stadium.
The Aussies had the best of the early exchanges and raced into a 12-0 lead thanks to quick fire tries from Jake Seaton and Jordan Rankin.
The Community Lions recovered well though and had a good spell of possession in Australia’s half, Substitute Tom Connick kept the Lions in the game with a well deserved try for the home side.
The game remained in the balance until a flurry of tries from the tourists saw them take control of the game before half time.
A number of unforced errors by the home side in difficult conditions helped Jackson Littlejohn, Mitchell Barnes and Gary Riccardi cross the whitewash in the final stages to make it 28-6 at the break.
Great Britain started the second half the stronger of the two sides, stand off Mark Wool scored a try which was followed by an impressive conversion by Jamie Tibbs from the touchline, making the score 28-12 to the visitors.
Both sides tightened up their defences as Great Britain battled to get back into the game. Tough tackling and a slippery ball were to blame for a number of handling errors in the final third by both teams.
However, it was Australia that managed to assert their authority on the game once again.
A good passing move unlocked the Great Britain defence allowing Australian loose forward Ryan James to score an impressive try in the corner.
The Lions began to look jaded and Australia capitalised in the final stages with tries in quick succession from Jake Finn, Scott Rosser and Jackson Littlejohn.
The final score was 50-12 to Australia but the Community Lions can be proud of their effort against a very talented side.
Hooker Kurt Baptiste was awarded Man of the Match for the tourists after a solid all round performance and second row forward, Jacob Fairbanks picked up the award for the Lions.
Australian head coach Brian Johnson said: “We’ve had a great tour, the lads have enjoyed every moment. The Lions are a very talented side and the score line didn’t really reflect the quality of our opposition.”
The Community Lions head coach, Carl Briscoe was obviously disappointed with the result but was optimistic about the futures of his players: “I’m really proud of the lads for not giving up. We matched them in the first twenty minutes of each half but they are a top side.”

AUSSIES CLEAN SWEEP ON '08 TOUR
The Australian Insitiute of Sport Rugby League team have done their country proud by remaining undefeated on this 2008 tour of France & the United Kingdom.
The 2nd Test was played on a synthetic pitch which according to Brian Johnston was 10 meters too short and 10 meters too narrow.
The Aussies turned up to to play and continue to tourture for the English Rugby League.
Interview with head coach tonight.
Australia is just a class above the GB Community Lions after victory in the 2nd Test in atrocious conditions.
Congratulations to Coaches Brian Johnston from the AIS and Brendan Barlow from Wavell SHS and ASSRL coach, and staff, also to the boys how have been away from home for 3 weeks and have had to endure lots of different weather conditions.

ST. HELENS FOOTY GROUND FROZEN SOLID
THe 2nd Test between the AIS and the GB Community Lions will have to be moved as the Saints home ground is FROZEN - heheheheh, now that has to be one of the funniest things we have heard at ourfootyteam this year.
Still laughing but anyway, according to Richard Donlon from Rugby League Services in Yorkshire, the game is most likely to be moved to Leigh, Leigh is a small amateur club with a G3 pitch, in Leigh, still in the County of York.
Jordan Rankin Interview by phone @ just after midnight (syd time) Thurday 4th Dec 2008
What are you doing after this tour Jordan?
Going back to the Gold Coast & having some solid training when i get back
What do you think of the standard of footy over there?
Yeah the standard is improving, its getting better each year, it's not quite up to standard [in Australia], we look forward to them improving over the next couple of years
You have had a terrific year, what was the highlight?
I'd definatley have to say representing the Australian Schoolboys & being Vice Captain of Australia, also my NRL debut was just as huge.
For such a young bloke you have achived so much, what are your goals for your future
Concidering I am still at school, to go good at school and do good, if I get to play a couple games of 1 st Grade while at school that would be good too.
What are your tips for young players following you boys on ourfootyteam ?
The most important thing to do is to ENJOY YOUR FOOTY, take it as it comes, enjoy the ups & downs. Pretty much just enjoy what your doing.
What do you like at school Jordan
It's a Sports High School, I love sport & playing footy. I like Maths & English too.
What is your favourite Music ?
I like R'n'B, most of the latest stuff out like Chris Brown & stuff like that.
What are the main differences between French & English rugby league ?
Standard and organisation of the teams, the French play more like Union, the English try the 'push and barge', they go real hard at first.
