CONGRATULATIONS TO CALE HOBDAY - AIS PLAYER of the TOUR
THe AIS have only just finished their tour presentations and the AIS Coaching Staff are pleased to announce that Cale HOBDAY from Wavell SHS has been voted "PLAYER of the AIS 2009 TOUR

Congratulations to the AIS, coaches Brian 'Johno' JOHNSON, Col MATTHEW's, Brendan BARLOW, PHYSIO, Kieren MORGAN, Team Doctor, Brian WITT, Audio-visual & Media Relations, Dave NORMAN and medical basket case Jason GREEN the on field runner who has a massive dose of Doonahead, hehehe

This has been a hugely successful tour by a young side of talented side of mostly boys, who both on and off the field have been excellent ambassadors for Australia.

Over the past few weeks these young Aussie's have experienced life outside of their comfort zones, in foreign lands they have had the opportunity to experience different tastes, sounds and cultures while learning about themselves at the same time.

A few weeks ago, this group of basically strangers flew out of Australia, many for the first time, over the course of the AIS tour, they have also lived and played with some of the countries best young footballers and now all can come home knowing they have 25 new mates for life.

Now with the AIS tour almost over and the squad of young men and boys will return with life long experiencess and importantly, all will be returning home men in their own right.

More soon PLUS INTERVIEW'S WITH Cale HOBDAY, RYAN POOYEY & Michael 'Sticks' Lucas

PLUS tour wrap with Dave NORMAN

BARLOW & GREENIE WITH SEVERE CASE OF 'DOONAHEAD'

Its seems that ace coach Brendan Barlow & on field trainer Jason Green are suffering from severe cases of 'DOONAHEAD'

With Barlow & Greenie cowering under their pillows the rest of the squad have a full days activities planned for tomorrow after today's sightseeing

Today the boys visited the town of Bath, which was built by the Romans over 2,000 years ago by the conquering Roman army. Bath has baths houses where the hot water is provided by mother nature in the form of natural hot springs.

Tomorrow the boys will be traveling about an hour to visit the famous STONEHENGE site, we asked the the AIS media manager Dave Norman if he reckons the forwards could push one of those big rocks over?, Dave said, "hehehe, they won't let us anywhere near the stones"

Stay tuned for some more interviews, this time ourfootyteam speaks to the talented Dylan HILL & Matthew NEAN, we also caught up with the teams doctor, Dr. Brian Witt to report on injuries and the 'DOONAHEAD' disease sweeping thru the camp.

AIS TEAM SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST!

Tonight on a cold and rainy Blackwood rugby park the Brian Johnson lead Australian Institute of Sport Rugby League Touring Team played their best game on the tour to defeat a very spirited Welsh National Under 18 team 38 - 18.

In a tough encounter which was played in, at times, pouring rain the Australians shrugged off the tenacious Welsh who took the tourists to the break with the score locked at 12 all with many in the large crowd beginning to think that a major upset was close at hand.

The Aussie's however maintained their composure and after the break implemented the instructions of head Coach Brian Johnson to play direct and spread the ball around and ran away with the match with the final score stretching out to 38 points to 18.

After the match the AIS coach praised the Welsh for the quality of their play and the way they continued to test the Australian team right to the final whistle. He did however heap his highest praises on his own charges who's performance he described as truly exceptional!

The best for the AIS team where captain Dean Blackman (who was named Players Player); Cale Hobday who has been one of the best on tour and fullback Maipele Morseu.

WELSH MATCH REPORT

Wales under 18s gave their Australian Institute of Sport visitors a good battle for a lot of the game at a freezing cold Blackwood RFC but eventually the visitors broke away, scoring five second half tries for a flattering 38-18 victory.

Unfamiliar cold conditions for the Aussies set the scene for the Blackwood battle and this suited the Welsh youngsters early on as they almost got a first minute try. Ben Evans broke through but play was brought back to the centre line for a forward pass.

But the European Champions shrugged off their disappointment and took the lead from their next play. Lewis Reece kicked a long grubber and pounced on the ball before running over in the corner, successfully converting his own try.

The lead didn't last long as Josh Merritt hit back for the visitors, going in just wide of the posts. Kyle Feldt had a fairly easy kick.

The Australians pressed for a second. Maipele Morseu was close as he attempted to run after his own chip kick, but the ball was picked up by Rhys Fenton.

They took the lead for the first time in the game on 19 minutes after Morseu went over from close range. Feldt's conversion made the score 12-6.

Wales were finding it tough to break through the strong Aussie defence for a second time. They gained an advantage when the visitors made a mistake following kick-off, letting the ball go over the dead ball line, but the resulting set led to nothing. Rhys Fenton was also stopped in his tracks, being pushed into touch by the far larger Aussie Kurtis Richie.

However Wales managed to break through just before the interval, another short range try, with Loren Quick forcing his way through and Reece converting.

Josh Merritt attempted to get AIS back on the teamsheet just before the half-time whistle, using soccer skills to move the ball upfield, but was eventually outrun and the teams went in level at half-time.

The Aussies took the lead again early in the second half. Swansea Dragons' Owen Williams, tipped to be a star of the future, made a try saving tackle on Royce Geoffrey but it just delayed inevitable as Zac Douglas went over in the corner. Feldt missed the kick.

It was instantly 20-12 after Ryan Pooley outsprinted the Welsh defence to latch onto a long kick. Reece Jaeger superbly kicked from the touchline to add the extras.

They sealed the game 17 minutes into the second half when Cale Hobday dived onto a grubber kick and salt was rubbed into Welsh wounds from kick-off when Kurtis Richie ran through to score under the sticks. Jaeger converted the second.

Wales refused to lie down, as was their spirit throughout the second half as the temperature slipped below zero. Rhys Evans was stopped in his tracks as he broke through but from the next play, Rhys Fenton ran over. Reece converted to bring the score back to 32-18.

But Australia had the final say with a Dean Blackman try with Jaeger once again adding the extras as the AIS continued their unbeaten record on their European tour.
AUSSIES STAND UP TO WELSH ASSULT

Congratulations to the AIS on a very strong finish of the 2009 tour with a strong and courageous victory over a highly rated Welsh U18's side.

PAUL CARTER INTERVIEW COMING
Ourfooty friend and photographer Ste JONES is a local at Stobart Stadium with his local side Widnes playing home games there, Ste caught up with Aussie Paul Carter for a quick chat - he reckons this will help him be an honourary AUSSIE - keep trying Ste!!

PC; It felt good, So proud to play for your country and have some good blokes around you so yehh it felt good to be picked

SJ; Some former AIS players have gone on to be big NRL stars with quite a few donning the green and gold at full international level Paul, In recent years there has been the likes of Israel Folou, Chris Sandow and Mitchell Pearce. It must take something special to be selected for this squad?

PC; Yeh its great, to play in the same teams those guys have played in is great, I look up to those players now.

SPIRITED ENGLAND GO DOWN FIGHTING

England Community Lions U18s 20 v 48 Australian Institute of Sport
The Stobart Stadium, Widnes

England Community Lions U18s were left disappointed as their hard work went unrewarded against the Australian Institute of Sport.

For long periods of the match, England stood toe-to-toe with their counterparts but were eventually over-run 48-20 at the Stobart Stadium, Halton.

In a first half in which England were arguably the better team, they would have felt aggrieved to go into the break behind on the scoreboard.

Australia had an uncharacteristically shaky start, with early handling errors gifting England good field position and it was England who took the lead fifteen minutes into the match.

Prop forward, Stephen Welton, powered his way over the line from first receiver and Kerman added the extras.

But Australia were back level shortly afterwards.

Slick passing, pace and good support play by Watson, Carter and then Lucas broke the English line with winger, Lucas, scoring to the left of the sticks.

Australia then took the lead after twenty-three minutes, in unfortunate circumstances for England.

Chris Ford, making his Lions debut, lost the ball in the tackle in his own half and Australian stand off Paul Carter was able to capitalise on the error and score under the posts.

England had been putting Australia under pressure with high kicks from the first whistle and forced fiery fullback, Morseu, to make numerous mistakes in the first half.

With five minutes of the half remaining, England’s pressure was rewarded after they forced an Australian drop-out for another set of six.

Australia were undone by Kerman’s decisive pass to impact forward Matthew Syron, who powered his way to the line.

England retained the initiative and Kerman’s dynamic kicking game continued to cause the tourists problems.

He was able to force another drop-out, from which Australia kicked the ball out of play on the full to gift England a penalty right in front of the sticks.

With half time approaching England took the two points on offer and regained the lead 14-12 but the Aussies are no pushovers and added to their score just before the siren.

Cale Hobday put loose forward John Puna through for a converted try, which made the score line 18-14 in favour of Australia at the interval.

It was a solid first half performance from England and they were unlucky to be behind.

England started the second half on the front foot, building good pressure but indiscipline let Australia increase their lead.

England conceded a penalty for holding on in the tackle from which Carter bagged his second try.

Australian fullback Morseu’s torrid night continued as he knocked on again and appeared to throw a punch at England winger Blake Mahovic.

The game threatened to boil over with players from both sides getting involved but the ref was able to restore order.

England got themselves back within one score shortly afterwards with Kerman involved again.

His pass helped substitute Kirk Collins get on the score-sheet and maintained his 100% record with the boot to make the score 20-24.

However, the final twenty minutes belonged to Australia as they started to show their class against the tiring England pack.

They scored four unanswered tries in the final stages, bearing heavy resemblance to the recent Four Nations final.

Warden, Morseu and Feldt(2) finished the job for Australia and England will be disappointed at the way their intensity dropped in the latter stages.

Nether-the-less England will take spirit from the way they competed for most of the game.

England head coach, Dave Woods said: “I’m really disappointed; I don’t think the score line indicated the game. For the first half we were the better side.

In the second half we stopped doing the things that were giving us joy and they lifted and we didn’t go with them.”

He was particularly impressed with the turn around in performance level since the defeat in France earlier this month.

“It was a lot better effort than we had in France; there was a lot of improvement from a lot of the players.

When we realised we could compete we got some comfort from that and did ourselves proud.”

The Lions don’t play again now until they take on Wales in January.

The full squad of 30 will again regroup for a training camp before the match squad will be selected.

AUSSIES GET SECOND HALF RIGHT

There was a bit of electricity in the air as the Great Britain Community Lions Under 18's and the Australian Iinstitute of Sport teams proudly sung their respective National Anthems before the latest battle between the Aussie's and the old enemy's ENGLAND and AUSTRALIA.

For the first few minutes the Aussie's dropped the ball too often early especially from the kick and gave the English too much possession.

Although the Australian defence was good, it couldn't spot mobile English second rower Stephen Welton from crashing over to score the first points after 17 minutes, Lions half back Ian Kerman converted giving the Home side a 6 - 0 lead.

Four minutes later at the 21 st minute mark, the AIS controlled the ball for a few sets and winger Michael Lucas was on the end of some good passes to score in the corner to put his team on the board, which was duly converted by Kyle Feldt.

It only took 3 minutes before the talented Paul Carter traced his fathers foot steps on Stobart Stadium dived over for a try which was appreciated by all in the crowd who knew their hero's son Paul was playing.

Reece Jaeger who kicks goals from anywhere took over the conversions and gave the Aussie the lead for the first time,

The AIS lead was short lived when young Lion Matthew Syron scored and tricky little half back Ian Kerman added the 2 points. 32 nd minute 12 - 12

It only took John Puna another 2 minutes to run onto a good ball and scored near the post, again super boot Jaeger converted,

The home side went into the sheds at the half only a try down GBC Lions 14 - 18 AIS

It seemed the local crowd had adopted young Paul Carter as they out screamed the Aussie supporters when Paul Carter crossed from his second try of the match, Reece Jaeger converted 14 - 24

It looked like a repeat of the first half with both side playing as they should for their country, then young Englishman Kurt Collins burst through to score, once again giving Ian Kerman an easy shot at the goal. 20 - 24

It took until the 17 th minute of the second half before the visiting Australians gained their composure and got the ball to Kurt Warden who is having a sensational tour, scored

The AIS lengthened the lead with an entertaining piece of play, half back Dean Blackman run at the English line only to chip the footy about 5 meters in the air, in a flash of brilliance, fullback Maipele Morseu ripped the ball from the air to run away for a good team try. Again Reece kicked and again his team added two more points.

Half way through the second half of this exciting junior International match saw the visitors in the lead on the big scoreboard. 20 - 36

Four minutes later, Man of the Match Kyle Feldt crossed the Community Lions line to the delight of his very happy team mates who rushed to congratulate him, as the team walked back to receive the footy again, Reece Jaeger added 2 more points. GBCL 20 - AIS 42

With the end of the match near, the rapidly improving Aussie's gave the ball to a hot Kyle Feldt who scored again, Reece doesn't miss from this close and the score had now jumped out to GBCL 20 - 48 AIS

FINAL SCORE : GBCL 20 - 48 AIS

A Special mention in dispatches to Cale HOBDAY who again lead from the front.

AIS Head Coach Mr. Brain Johnson said "he was happy, he is very pleased with their efforts and their patience and their execution, and it showed in the way they played tonight's game, they have shown vast improvement again"

Tomorrow the AIS will be visiting the Famous 'OLD TRAFORD" home of Manchester United and will get to cruise around the hallowed halls.

The AIS squad will then get ready for the game against a strong Welsh Under 18 side next Tuesday at another famous footy ground, Cardiff Stadium.

The AIS have smashed the Great Britain Community Lions with an excellent second half of rugby League.

Plenty more soon - including some more interviews with some of the boys

GOOD NEWS @ HALF TIME

Australia lead the Great Britain Community Lions in the first 40 minutes of the 1st half, with a good ref allowing the boys to play footy and a penalty count of 2 - 3 in the Aussie's favour, its been a good half of footy by both teams

The Community Lions were first to score after a tight first 17 minutes, 3 minutes later the Aussie's hit back to level the scores.

3 minutes after that, the Australian were in again only to see the English foes cross again to level the scores at 12 - all

the Community Lions converted a penalty from in front to hold a slim lead going into the half only to watch a flying Aussie race in to score just before the half time siren.

MAIPELE RECKONS FRANCE IS WORTH THE VISIT

It has been a pretty terrific 2009 for Townsville's Maipele Morseu who is in England with the Australian Institute of Sport Rugby League team.

Maipele was part of the Queensland Schoolboys side that cleaned up by winning the ASSRL Championships in Newcastle earlier this year.

The Great Britian Community Lions are the next game for the AIS squad, the GBCL and Maipele have already battled each other twice this year when the Community Lions toured Australia a few months ago.

Maipele was on fire for the Australian Schoolboys in the 1st Test at Canberra Stadium then again at St. Mary's Stadium in Sydney to give the Aussies a 2 Tests to nil victories.

The Community Lions have improved since their Aussie Tour, playing matches against the French, Scottish and the powerful Welsh u 18 team.

Maipele was good enough to answer a few of the questions sent in by you guys, ourfootyteam visitors, so hear goes.

1. DO YOU LIKE THE FRENCH FOOD AND WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE DISH?
"No not really cause we hate to much bread not as aussie on and my favourite dish was having to taste snails, frogs and horse meat"

2. WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE WAR MEMORIAL
"Yeah the war memorial was good to see how our soldiers battled hard."

3. ARE THE FRENCH GIRLS HOT?
"Yeah there were heaps of hot girls don't mind coming back for a visit"

4. HOW DO THE FRENCH REACT TO THE VISITING AUSSIES?
"They think we were the Australian team so we felt pretty good and they welcomed us which was good."

5. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN FRANCE?
"Visiting Paris and going to Effile tower and site seeing around France"

6. WOULD YOU COME BACK FOR A LONGER VISIT WHEN YOU ARE OLDER AND DO SOME MORE EXPLORING?
"Yeah i would like to come back and hopefully play some footy for the dragons"
MAIPELE reckons they are just 'chillin'"

LIONS READY FOR AUSSIE TEST
The England Community Lions U18s are ready to face a stern test when they take on the Australian Institute of Sport next week at The Stobart Stadium Widnes, kick off 7.30pm.

Despite suffering a disappointing 22-14 defeat in France earlier this month, the Lions will be looking for a much improved effort this time round and head coach Dave Woods will use the AIS game to gauge how his young side have recovered from the France encounter.

Two players have been added to the initial squad that was announced prior to the game against France Juniors, with Chris Ford (Thatto Heath Crusaders) and Jonathan Frodsham (Pilkington Recs) looking to face the tourists.

West Bank’s Luke Willings has dropped out.

The AIS – who are currently over in France – opened their tour with a hard fought 16-13 win over France U17s. and were defeated 27 - 20 by the French U19's - The Aussie's will be keen to make up for this 1st tour defeat in years

MATCH REPORT FROM THE TRENCHES

The boys are nursing a bumps and bruises from what was a very physical and at times spiteful game. The French spoiling tactics, combined with a loopsided penality count (14 - 4) delivered the French argubly one of their finest wins

AIS headcoach Mr. Brian Johnson said " Despite being disappointed with the loss, praised his players on their effort and composure in very difficult circumstances"

AIS TRIES : Royce, JEFFERIES, Ryan POOLE, Maipele MORSELI, Cale HOPDAY, Michael LUCAS

SPECIAL MENTION TO BIG CALE HOBDAY - BEST on the GROUND, VOTED AIS BEST PLAYER AND to top it off was awarded the BEST on the GROUND by the FRENCH Coaches

CALE HAD A BLINDER

APPARENTLY Johnnathan Thurston has been in Toulouse and talking you the visiting HOBDAY family, 'JT' was very interested in how the boys have been going.

STOP THE PRESS : scorers could be incorrect - the boys are shopping and chatting on facebook, more news and some action foto's tomz - 1,000's of bikini clad babes hit the beaches in Australian heatwave, the boys are in France not quite freezing, but England is about 10 degrees colder - lol

FRENCH CUT LOOSE IN TOULOUSE
The French u19's have recorded a historic victory over night by defeating the 1st australian side in 5 or 6 years.

as ourfootyteam predicted a couple weeks ago, this second game was certainly a challenge

once again the french ref was instrumental in the games out come

this is not taking any credit away from the french, who have the most improved development program on the planet

The French held a 18 -10 lead going into the half time break after some enterprising football.

the French ref's have funny interpretations of the games rules and gave the home side a penality count of 7 -2 at the break

Despite some desperate play by the tourist, the French boys held on the be the first French junior side to defeat an Aussie team in 5 or 6 years

AIS SCRAP HOME IN OPENING TOUR MATCH

In front of what locals described as one of the biggest crowds seen at the Jean Bernege Stadium in Tonneins in quite a while the Australian Rugby League’s AIS program team opened their 2009 tour of France and Great Britain with a hard fought 16 – 13 win over the very much improved and committed French under 18 team.

AIS Head coach, Brian Johnson, whilst a little disappointed in his teams’, at times, poor execution, praised his players for the way they stayed in the game and come away with the win.

“We weren’t great tonight but we’ve been travelling for three days solid across the world to get here and had a very limited preparation.”

Soon after the kick off it became very clear to all that the French team had turned up to play and from the outset they attacked the Australian team in both offence and defense.

The French team opened the scoring after just 9 minutes with a surprise field goal.

A few minutes later on the back of very strong set the AIS struck back through first time captain Dean Blackman and with the conversion from Kyle Fields the AIS took the lead 6 – 1.

On the back of a very lopsided penalty count that was the last points of the half for the Ais team. The weight of possession finally paid off for the French when in the 30th minute the French lock finished a very good passage of play and scored their 1st try.

With an unsuccessful kick the half time score stayed 6 points to 5 in favour of the visitors.

After the break the French team continued with a series of enterprising plays and after 7 minutes were awarded a penalty 25 metres out from the Australian line which they quickly converted into 2 points via the kick and took the lead 7 points to 6.

The AIS once again spurred into action eight minutes later scored their second try through five eight Paul Carter. With the extras Australia jumped out to a 12 – 7 lead.

Not to be outdone and with a very vocal home crowd cheering them on the French were again rewarded when their No 4 finished off a well executed move scored out wide.

The conversion was unsuccessful but the French were again albeit by the slenderest of Margins.

With the of a major upset staring them in the face the French crowd again lifted their team and the score remained unchanged until, with 3 minutes to go, the Australians put together their best passage of play of the match and scored a match winning try through their centre, No 4 Ryan Pooley.

Best on ground was awarded to the French No6 Lilian Abert. The AIS team awarded their players player award to their five eight Paul Carter.

At the post match presentation AIS head coach, Brian Johnson praised the French team for their enterprising play and predicted that in the very near future they will be a real powerhouse in the game.

AUSSIES HANG ON FOR NARROW WIN
ourfootyteam logo
The visiting AIS rugby league team held on fort a close win in the 1st game of their 2009 tour.

The Australian held the narrowest of margins to lead by one point at the half time break and have done just enough for victory against a highly improved French National U18 squad.

Ourfootyteam spoke with Mr. David Norman this morning by telephone who is the excited media man for this tour, here is some of what Dave said.

This first game was a good test against this very much improved French u18 side, the 3 tries to 2 victory will be a wake up call for the young Aussie's who were a bit rusty in this game.

The Aussie's struggled with their ball control and will need to lift in preparation for Thursday clash with the French u19 side.

Australia's "Players Player" was young champion Paul Carter who put in a strong performance to lift his side to the win.

This was one of those game were the ref had a major impact on the game, the penalty count was amazing (stats coming), the ref must have got paid every time he blew his whistle, so this must have been his retirement game.

David said, "the ground was in terrific nick, the French were a very committed side and are a much improved side since last year"

It was a long trip to the ground for the Aussie touring party, with the game played 1 1/2 hours away from their base in France.

The boys have been doing the tourist bit too, having visited the Somme on Monday, the boys also paid their respects to Dave Normans great uncle who fell at Peron in world war 1.

Tomorrow the President has invited the squad to visit the Airbus factory where they assemble the gigantic Airbus a380 in one of the world largest buildings.

AIS GET IT ON WITH FROGS TOMORROW NIGHT
ourfootyteam logo
Australia's latest hero's will take the field for the first game of their 2009 Tour against the highly rated French U17's squad.

Although the Aussie play 2 games against the French National Junior teams, the first encounter should be the best.

The Under 17's are all keen rugby league players and by the time they get to the under 19's, Rugby Union offer's the boys wads of cash and off they goes and league looses more players. The French are very strong in this and younger age groups.

So we really look forward to tomorrow nights first match, it should be a cracker with the French U17 coming off the back of smacking the Great Britain Community Lions last week

Should have more news after we talk to the squad tonite Aussie time.

Good luck to both teams, but especially the young Aussies - GO BOYS !!

Talented footballer, Cobar’s Zacc Douglas will join an AIS rugby league tour of France and the British Isles.
AIS SCHOLARSHIP FOR LOCAL ROOSTER
COBAR AGE
After displaying outstanding form during the recent Group 11 rugby league Under-18’s season, Cobar Roosters backrower Zacc Douglas has been selected by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) to tour France and the British Isles.

Douglas who next year will link with his favourite NRL team, the Parramatta Eels, is part of the AIS Development Squad, which contains a group of about 20 of the most talented up-and-coming rugby league players in Australia.

“There are now about 45 players in the NRL who went on previous AIS tours,” Country Rugby League development officer Steve McLellan said.

“So this is a chance of a lifetime for boys from the country.”

The AIS selects one player from each emerging rugby league state with NSW and Queensland players making up the rest of the squad.

They are identified from various sources including the Under 16 NSW Country Championships and then invited to attend trials of the AIS in Canberra.

Players are offered scholarships to participate in the AIS training program over the following years.

“Merrit (Dubbo) was actually fast-tracked from the Under-16 country championships because he made such a big impression,” McLellan said.

The squad includes successful Macquarie players Dylin Hill and Josh Merritt, Dubbo CYMS forward Jordan Hay, Cobar’s Zacc Douglas and Mudgee’s Brendan Simpson.

They will fly to Hong Kong this Friday, November 13, before going on to Paris.

From there they will take in some history with a visit to the World War II battlefields on the Somme, and then down to Toulouse for the first two matches of the tour against the French Under-18’s and French Under-19’s.

The squad arrives in Manchester on November 23 where they will play a game against British Lions and then on to Cardiff to play a Test against Wales.

THE AIS SQUAD FLY OUT OF SYDNEY AIRPORT TODAY - GOOD LUCK BOYZ !!
TRIO EYES NRL GOAL
(CABOOLTURE SHIRE HERALD)

THREE Moreton Bay footy mates stand on the verge of representing Australia and establishing themselves among the next batch of NRL hopefuls.

Michael Lucas (Warner), Cale Hobday (Cashmere) and Josh Batalibasi (Deception Bay) fly to Europe today as part of the 25-man Australian Institute of Sport under-18 squad.

They have two Test matches against under-17 and under-19 French national teams, and stand-alone matches against the Great Britain Community Lions and a Welsh select side.

The fact the trio remain on the same development path is quite remarkable.

All three played in the under-16 Albany Creek Crushers Premier team, Lucas and Hobday attend Wavell State High School together, and Hobday and Batalibasi were teammates in the Redcliffe under-18 side this year.

And their bond will continue, particularly when the AIS team arrives in France. Part of the players’ scholarship criteria is that they research a family member or person from their hometown who lost their life in the Word War I battle of the Somme, in northern France.

AIS assistant coach and Wavell SHS rugby league teacher Brendan Barlow said the experience would help the boys grow as individuals, and as footballers.

``Educating these guys is a big part of the trip, they will see some sights, learn new things, and something like the Somme can be really touching, and you see the boys rally around each other from that,’’ he said.
