NORTH QUEENSLAND Cowboys UNDER 15 CHALLENGE

After a disappointing draw with the combined Mirani/Pioneer High team in round one of the Schoolboy’s NORTH QUEENSLAND Cowboys U/ 15 Challenge, Mackay State High School Bounced back on their school oval today to record a morale boosting victory over rivals and competition favourites Kirwan High from Townsville.

Kirwan found themselves behind on the scoreboard early in the contest following a slick move which put Mackay High winger Buchanan Rawhiti over the line.

The try was converted by Mackay SHS’s half Dylan Smith to give the Home team an early lead.

Elusive Mackay High centre Rogan Dean produced a scything run on the back of some quick hands in the backline eventually finding himself over the line out wide for an unconverted try.

Kirwan High hit back with tries and a conversion through state fullback Wayne Ulugia on either side of the break to level the scores at 10 all.

The second half developed into a arm-wrestle with some impressive defensive skills on display from both teams.

The deadlock was finally broken when Mackay High’s prop Daniel Matsen split the Kirwan fowards on the 40 metre line finally bullocking his way over the line carrying three defenders on his back and scoring adjacent to the posts. The try was converted by Dylan Smith to close out the contest 16 – 10.

Mackay SHS coach Don McDermid praised his player’s enthusiasm and commitment and named fullback Ian Read as his player of the match.

Read was a constant threat to Kirwan in attack and was required to make several try saving tackles in defense.

McDermid was also impressed by half, and Capricornia representative Dylan Smith, U/15 Queensland captain, Leon Curry at pivot and barnstorming prop Matsen who continues to improve.

The next game in this competition for Mackay High’s U/15 team will be played next Wednesday in Ayr when they take on a combined Charters Towers secondary schools team.

2007 NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS SUPER 8 AND U/15 CHALLENGE
Punishing defence and close scores were on display at the opening games of the NQ Cowboys U/15 Challenge and Open, Super 8 interschool’s competition in Mackay on Tuesday night.

In the U/15 game Mackay High clashed with a combined Mirani/Pioneer High team coached by Mirani SHS’s Pat Francis.

Although Mackay High seemed to be making more metres in attack, a constant flow of ill disciplined penalties invited their opponents in to their red zone with inevitable results.

The Combined high schools team scored twice before the Mackay High team consolidated to go to the break with a 10 – 6 score line.

The second half offered more of the same with the Mackay High boys looking well out of the game at 20 – 10 down and ten minutes left on the clock.

With a combination of skill and luck the Academy team managed to lift, running in two late tries and secure a very fortunate 20 all draw.

Mackay High’s coach Don McDermott was disappointed with his team’s execution and discipline and agreed that much improvement is needed between now and next weeks game against Kirwan SHS also in Mackay.

In the open schoolboys encounter the young Mackay SHS squad, featuring only one Year 12 student among the run-on players, prevailed over a spirited St Patrick’s College team 20 – 16.

Although the Mackay High team appeared in control at most stages of the game, several missed scoring opportunities saw St Pats stay in touch until late into the second half.

A try on the bell closed the gap but Mackay High maintained lead throughout most of the second half.

Mackay High coach Don Saunders was impressed with his team’s effort but lamented a wealth of scoring opportunities that remained unrealised.

For Mackay High Daniel Simeon, Rob McLeod, Callan Peach and Steve Elliot al scored tries and Marmin Barba kicked two from four. For St Pats Callen Langer, Ryan Williamson and Damon Aplin scored tries and Michael Gleason kicked two from three.

Mackay SHS opens will play Kirwan SHS in Mackay at the MSHS oval next Wednesday at 1:30pm.
Mackay District secondary School RLROUND 3 - GAMES SYNOPSIS
Games were played at two venues this week, Mackay North State High hosted Holy Spirit College’s Year 8, U/15 and Open teams at Magpies Oval, Glenella and some high scoring games were on display.

Mercy College’s Year 8 and U/15 team and St Patrick’s Open 2nd’s met Mackay High teams at South’s Abbott Park complex.

Also at Abbott Park Mackay High’s 1st Year 8 team and Open 2nd’s took on the Mirani State High School teams.

At this stage of the season it is important to acknowledge the support of our local Rugby League organisations that contribute to the successful running of our schoolboy’s competition each year.

Most importantly we thank the referees, who give up their time to officiate at games each week.

Although it can be a thankless task, without them there is no game, and referee’s coordinator Scott Irvine has been working had to get referees to as many games as possible.

Under MRL President Greg Sutherland’s leadership and with the support of the ARL’s Andrew Lawrence all of the districts leagues clubs are supporting schoolboy Rugby League through the use of their facilities.

The Southern Suburbs club, and in particular South’s Juniors President Doug Knight should be commended for their extraordinary support of schoolboys football in Mackay.

South’s Abbott Park facility with two quality fields under lights is being enjoyed by many schoolboy players from both primary and secondary schools each week.

In games last Wednesday, Mercy College’s Year 8 team bounced back from a loss to the strong Mackay High 1st’s with an impressive 24 – 10 win over the Year 8 MSHS 2nd’s team.

MSHS coach Sam Granville was unhappy with his boy’s defensive efforts and predicted some intensive defensive training sessions in the near future.

The U/15 MSHS 3rd’s registered their first win of the year with a strong 44 – 12 result recorded against Mercy College.

Mr Able says the boys are heading in the right direction and is expecting an improved showing over the coming rounds.

Round 1 - Games Synopsis
Games kicked off in the 2007 interschool competition with some good football played at two city venues on Wednesday night.

The games between Sarina High and Mercy and St Patrick’s Colleges, which were to have been played in Sarina, were cancelled due to heavy rain and catch-up games will now be played over the coming weeks.

Torrential rain interrupted several games at Magpies and South’s Abbott Park with the Open game between HSC and Mackay High 3 being stopped at the break by the referee as sheets of water covered the field. The final result saw Mackay High 3 finish in front 10 – 8.

In other results from Abbott Park the Year 8 Mackay High 2 team defeated a gallant HSC team 16 – 10 and the HSC U/15 team performed well to put away the Mackay High 3 team 20 – 6.

In a scrappy but spirited U/15 game also at Abbott Park visitors Moranbah High scraped home over Mackay High 2 16 – 10.

Moranbah must now be viewed as one of the favourites to take out this competition.

At Magpies the Mackay North High Year 8’s were too strong keeping their Mirani High opponents scoreless, the final score was 18 – 0.

In the Open game the country visitor had their revenge beating North High in another low scoring affair 14 – 4.

Congratulation to all schools for the effort and good sportsmanship on display at all these games.
