Mighty Kruger
Kruger State School, a school from the Ipswich area just west of Brisbane, has a remarkable record in Rugby League in Queensland.
They have been State Champions in the 12 year State Knockout Competition in 2002 and 2006.
They were runners up in 2003 and were knocked out in the quarter final in 2005 by the ‘first try’ rule by the team that eventually won the competition.
The school furnishes teams in the 10 years, 11 years and 12 years competition in the Central District Competition.
These teams together have won 110 consecutive games since 2002 in this competition.
To highlight the solid depth of talent at the school Kruger has only this year had two players selected in the Queensland Primary Rugby League Team. |
Darren Lockyer talks to the kids of Kruger State School |
These are the first Queensland Rugby League representatives they have ever had.
It could be said that Kruger teams are champion teams not teams of champions.
The boys show their commitment to training by joining James and Greg, the janitor/groundsmen at Kruger and Ms Buchanan the year 7 teacher in the preseason cross country runs. |

There is a high level of skills training from the first time the student enter the program and this carries them through to the 12 year team for which they all aspire to be selected.
There is already talk of the possible awesome 10 year team they may have in 2007.
If so, Kruger will be making their name for at least three more years. |

An added benefit for the school’s successes was their selection to participate in the “Eels on Wheels” tour in 2004 and the recent visit by five of the present Australian Rugby League squad –
Matt King (Melbourne Storm)

Sam Thaiday (Brisbane Broncos)
Andrew Ryan (The Bulldogs)
