MORE THAN 100 YOUNG STARS ENROL IN HOT COURSE

RUGBY league is a hot subject at Mackay State High School.

The MSHS Rugby League Academy continues to grow rapidly with students from as far away as Toowoomba and Emerald joining local players from across the district on the training paddock.

More than 100 students were currently enrolled in Academy classes, coach Don Saunders said yesterday.
The classes also include four “home stay” students, from as far away as the Central Highlands and Tambo.

Saunders said the school had been recognised by the Sydney-based rugby league website ourfootyteam.com, ranking it among the nation’s “hot” rugby league schools.

The website is now hosting a page for the school’s Rugby League Academy which will display the latest news and information from the school and school-boy football in the Mackay district.

Saunders said this year’s program gets under way with a “boot camp” at Kinchant Dam on February 14-16.
Following this junior and senior teams head off to the Clairvaux 7s tournament in Brisbane later on February 17.

Mackay High will enter an open team in the Super 8 phase of the 2007 Arrive Alive Cup competition. This tier of the competition includes all of the elite schoolboy teams from Central and North Queensland, including Abergowrie College, and Kirwan High and Ignatius Park College from Townsville.

Mackay High will also enter a record number of students in the district secondary schools competition. Possibly as many as eight teams from the school will compete.

Apart from the regular Townsville, Central Queensland and South-East Queensland tours the most exciting event for one fortunate team of 15 and 16 year old students in 2007 will be a tour to England to compete with school teams from London and Manchester in September.

“A tour of this type will be a once in a lifetime experience for most of these students,” Saunders said.
A dedicated group of parents and staff continues to organise and fundraise for the trip.

Players from rural and remote areas remain a particular focus for the Academy.

In an effort to offer training and competition opportunities to these students from isolated situations the school’s home stay program offers opportunities to study, train and play in Mackay.
