CARNIVAL TO FIND NRL'S NEW STARS
NEWSMAIL
FOR the first time since 2000 the Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Rugby League Confraternity Carnival will be played in Bundaberg, and host school Shalom College will fly the flag against the country's future NRL stars.

Shalom is also sending two netball teams, coached by Shelley Naumann and Sharyn Batt, to defend their Queensland Independent Secondary Schools title in Caloundra.

But locally all eyes will be on the Confraternity, touted as the best school rugby league competition in the country.

When the tournament was last held in town, some of the current NRL representatives who have played include Johnathan Thurston, Brett Seymour, Grant Rovelli, David Shillington, David Stagg and Nate Myles.

The Shalom team, led by Storm-contracted second-rower Felise Kaufusi will compete in division two against Scarborough's Southern Cross, Gladstone's Chanel and St Joseph's/Assumption from Stanthorpe and Warwick.

Quarter finals will start on Tuesday afternoon before a winner is crowned on Friday.

“We are quietly confident of doing well, injuries killed us last year, so we are hoping we get a good run this time,” coach John Gilbert said.

They will play Chanel at 10.30am on Monday at Shalom, a team that has beaten them in a previous tussle this year.

“We had Felise, Joe Trost and Jan De Villiers out that game, so it will hopefully be a different story this time,” he said.

Last year's winners Ignatius College from Townsville, St Brendan's and Rockhampton Grammar are shaping as the pre-tournament favourites.

“The Ignatius hooker, who is the Queensland under-18 hooker and player of the carnival last year will be playing, I think they are the team to beat,” carnival committee member Vince Habermann said.

According to Habermann and Gilbert, who have both been involved in the tournament for nearly 10 years, scouts from most NRL teams attend, meaning a good performance could be career defining.

“The opportunity is there to go on ... Denan Kemp got picked up by the Broncos from division two a few years ago,” Gilbert said.

COWBOYS' CAPTAIN MORGAN LEADING THE WAY
Townsville Bulletin
PLAYMAKER ... Northern skipper Michael Morgan warming up before yesterday's match at Jack Manski Oval
BRIGHT young talent Michael Morgan sacrificed a Cowboys under-20s jersey this week to lead the Northern side in the Queensland Secondary Schools Under-18 State Championships.

And the Ignatius Park student's ambitions to claim a maiden Queensland Schoolboys jersey could be realised after leading his side to two convincing wins in the opening two days of the carnival.

Just 16 at the time, Morgan was pitched into the Cowboys under-20s side earlier than expected this year following injuries at hooker and in the halves at the beginning of the season.

He has impressed coach Kristian Woolf, with Morgan now the first choice halfback at the club.

Woolf, a former school teacher, understood Morgan's desire to earn his first state jersey though and allowed him to stand down from Monday night's clash with Newcastle to compete at the carnival.

David Elliott is one of Woolf's assistants at the Cowboys and is coaching the Northern side where Morgan is skipper.

He said the half had a burning desire to lead the team to glory.

"He led the side well, he's captain of the side so I think he's really taken it on himself to perform well and lead the team well," Elliott said.

"Obviously he's playing with the 20s and the Cowboys but he definitely wanted to be part of the representative stuff and try and make this Queensland schoolboys side.

"He hasn't made one before so it's very important to him."

The remarkable rise of Morgan is staggering given his age.

He has been a valuable member of the under-20s, missing captain and regular halfback Ray Thompson, steering the team well and has scored five tries, the second best at the club.

He has bagged two already at the carnival and collected a man-of-the-match award on day one.

"People forget Michael just turned 17 in December and he hasn't played a lot of high rep footy," Elliot said.

"But he's certainly been one of our better ones the last couple of weeks, against the Warriors certainly. He's learning all the time and he'll continue to dominate here I think.

"The coaching staff over there have been quite patient and (are) putting a lot of time into him, I think he's starting to see the benefits."

Day two results:
Northern 48 (K Ritchie 2, J Taumalolo 2, A Elisala 2, M Morgan, K Feldt tries; J Lobwein 8 goals) d Sunshine Coast 4 (Z Friend try).

JOY OF THE GAME ... Gorden Tallis with the winning team
BROTHERS WHITE WIN GORDEN TALLIS CUP
Story & Photo By : ANTONY STEWART Townsville Bulletin
BROTHERS White overcame a gruelling schedule to claim the prestigious Gorden Tallis Cup last weekend, beating Centrals White 24-16 in a hard-fought grand final.

After 10 games in two days and a close semi-final win over the Western Lions, Brethren coach Aaron Bryant wasn't sure his team would have enough energy in the decider.

But Brothers lifted a notch, overcoming a 12-6 halftime deficit, to earn the club its second Gorden Tallis Cup in three seasons at Kern Brothers Drive.

The champions did not lose any games during the weekend, with two draws the only thing standing in the way of a perfect tournament.

"They all played well, they all played for each other, so it was good to see in their first grand final," coach Bryant said.

"They were buggered but they picked up for the grand final and they went well."

More than 600 under-10s players from 40 teams competed in the two-day competition. As well as local sides, teams from Gladstone, Richmond, Hughenden, Palm Island, Edmonton, Cairns, Mossman, Mareeba and Mackay took part.

Centrals White used a strong wind to their advantage in the first half, pinning Brothers in their own end with a series of booming kicks downfield.

But the change of ends marked a change of fortunes as Brothers turned the tables on their opponents, winning the second half 18-4 to clinch the trophy.

"We got the wind with us in the second half and we went on with it," Bryant said.

In other results, Gladstone Brothers won the Junior Supporters Trophy by beating Brothers Paddys, while Herbert River defeated Cairns Kangaroos Blue to take out the Reggie Matthews Memorial Shield.

Games were played over 20 minutes, with the grand finals being 40 minutes.

COWBOYS SCHOOLS CHALLENGE GET OFF TO FLYING START
Story BY : Mr. Easton - Cairns SHS
Cowboys Challenge for 2009 kicked off with a bang with about 25 schools competing in some format of this year's competition.

While a few games were postponed due to school camps etc, the rest of the schools had a hot and humid start to the year under bright blue skies.

The under 18 top tier competition in particular showed some very tight contests, with Atherton and Djarragun having a draw, while Trinity Bay SHS and St Augustines both came from behind to win their contests suggesting a very even competition in 2009.

The under 15 top tier saw 2 teams flex their muscles early as Bentley Park and Cairns SHS racking up big wins, these 2 teams have won the last 2 under 15 peninsula titles.

Atherton also showed they will be a team to be reckoned with with a strong win, while a tight tussle between Mareeba and St Augustines eventually went the way of Mareeba.

The under 13s games showed that the southern half of Cairns is looking strong with Gordonvale and Bentley Park A off to good starts, perhaps not suprising as southern corridor club sides Edmonton Storm and Southern Suburbs were CDJRL under 12 grand finalists last year.

In the 2nd Tier a tight encounter in the 18s between Gordonvale and Schooltec, while in the 15s Malanda/Herberton and Redlynch had very strong wins.

With a bit of help from the weather gods round 2 kicks off this week, where we will no doubt start to get a good picture of how season 2009 will unfold.

KEEBRA PARK PROMISE BIG '09

With season 2009 well and truly in sight, trials are set to begin at Keebra Park.

The new cohort of grade 8's are well and truly into training and looking like a team that could emulate the unbeaten antics of last years 8's.

The Nines are looking good. With only a couple of losses from last years team that won the Renouf Shield 74-0, however they have gained a number of juniors from as far afield as Tamworth and North Queensland.

The Under 15's have also profitted from the reputation the school has aquired across both Australia and New Zealand with a number of new recruits filling the ranks.

There are 80 students in the Open Divison with a number of students on contracts with the Wests Tigers and the Gold Coast Titans. The Wests Tigers players are looking particularly strong with gains throughout the forwards anda couple of useful looking halves.

Another positive addition to the school this year is the appointment of a Polynesian guidance officer who is on hand to work with the students for whom the schooling system is often different to the one they are used to andd often speak a language other than English at home.

These innovations, coupled with the rigorous training schedule are sureto make 2009 a Blockbuster yeab at "The Park' , so good luck boys and lets bring it on

BROTHERS LOOK TO YOUNG GUN
News Mail - Bundaburgs favourite paper
TEENAGE star Reece Watton may be rushed into Brothers' rugby league premiership-winning pack after the departure of several key players this off-season.

Grand final heroes Aaron Kuskey, Michael Morris, Andrew Duffy and Mark Cherry have left the club, leaving a gaping hole in its 2009 roster.

But director of coaching Tracy Kuskey is confident a new breed of champions will be able to lead the way to back-to-back titles.

“We will be looking on some young guys to step up,” Kuskey said.

“But the nucleus of our team will remain the same and we should be in a strong position come the start of the year.”

Kuskey said his son, Aaron, had taken a job in Mount Isa and was not expected to play this season, while Morris, Duffy and Cherry decided to hang up the boots.

Watton, 18, who played Wide Bay School Boys last year, is expected to start in the centres or move to lock if Aaron Hall is shifted into the halfback role that has been vacated by Kuskey.

The side will get its first opportunity to test its new line-up at the Supa 13s carnival this weekend at Brothers Sports Club.

Teams from across Queensland will be in Bundaberg for the one-day event.

Watton was excited about his opportunity to press for a starting spot.

“It's a great time to come into the squad - there's a lot of confidence,” he said.

QLD REPRESENTATIVE SEASON IN REVIEW

MANY Queenslanders proudly donned the maroon jersey in 2008. Here is how the year unfolded on the representative stage.

XXXX QUEENSLAND RESIDENTS

Queensland’s disappointing form in the 2008 Origin curtain-raisers continued on the evening of June 11 when New South Wales Residents beat the XXXX Maroons 24-16.

The result was not what many in the Suncorp Stadium stands were hoping for, particularly as NSW had won the Under 18 clash by a handsome margin earlier in the day and the Under 16 clash back in May.

Even though NSW had wrestled the supremacy away from Queensland in the annual representative Residents clash, there was still a lot to like about the Maroons’ effort.

Queensland showed plenty of grit to fight their way back into the contest late in the second half through tries to Cy Lasscock and Selasi Berdie.

The clash against a strong NSW team also provided many of the Queensland representatives with an opportunity to further push their claims for a National Rugby League berth.

Eight members of the Queensland team – Kaine Manihera, Brett Kelly, Chris Sheppard, Josh Lewis, Isaak Ah Mau, Scott Bolton, Selasi Berdie and Clint Amos – played at NRL level at some stage throughout the 2008 season.

Scott Bolton was judged Queensland’s best in the eight point loss to NSW. The big forward was presented with the Players’ Player Award at the post-match function which was held in conjunction with the Queensland State of Origin team’s awards.

QUEENSLAND UNDER 18'S

The Queenslanders played with plenty of passion, but it wasn’t quite their night as NSW winger Matthew Wright raced in a hat-trick to spoil the home team’s party in the Under 18 clash at Suncorp Stadium.

The classy NSW team piled on 22 unanswered points in the second half to record a comprehensive 34-12 victory.

But the match was delicately poised at the break, with the half-time scoreline of 12-all reflective of the tight opening exchanges.

New South Wales drew first blood in the third minute when a slick backline movement netted a try for the flying Wright.

But Queensland struck back in the 14th minute with a spectacular four pointer to Gerard Beale. Young Norths Devils winger Ryan Tongia leapt high into the air to secure possession from a kick before offloading a freakish pass to Beale.

New South Wales dominated the opening stages of the second half, with tries from Lachlan Coote and Mitchel Johnson. Wright scored two late tries inside the final 10 minutes to complete the scoring.

Prop Josh McGuire was a standout for Queensland. McGuire made a number of bustling hitups in an inspirational performance. The home side was also well served by young back-rower Patrick O’Hanlon, who scored Queensland’s second try.

QUEENSLAND UNDER 18 MAROONS

A classy New South Wales Country team outplayed the Queensland Under 18 Maroons in their representative clash at Stockland Park, Kawana, on July 19.

Doubles from NSW Country pair Rory Brien and Jason McGrady lifted the visiting team to a convincing 50-22 win.

Marmin Barba, who played for the Northern Marlins in the State Carnival in Prosperine, did his best to stem the tide with two tries for the Maroons.

While the final scoreline was disappointing for all concerned, it should be noted that steps have been taken to ensure future Queensland Under Age teams like this one are far more formidable.

The QRL announced in September that new Under 16 and Under 18 Competitions would be staged in 2009.

The Competition, which will be split into Southern and Northern Conferences, is expected to provide the State’s elite players with regular exposure to a high standard of play.

It is hoped that these exciting Competitions will assist with the development of our best young players and ensure future Queensland teams are primed for battle against NSW.

QUEENSLAND UNDER 16'S

A brilliant opening burst from boom back-rower Korbin Sims couldn’t save Queensland from defeat in the Under 16 clash against New South Wales at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium.

Sims, the younger brother of Broncos forward Ashton, made two clean breaks in the opening half.

His first break paved the way for the opening try of the match to flying Queensland winger Josh Batalibasi, who slipped past two defenders to slide over in the left corner.

Sims was at it again minutes later when he broke the line wide open with a powerful charge.

But this time the NSW team couldn’t reel him in.

NSW fullback William Hopoate made a desperate lunge but Sims kept the legs pumping and dived over to score a sizzling try near the posts.

Mitchell Frei converted to put Queensland in front 16-12 at half-time.

But NSW dominated the second half, with tries from Vaipuna Tia Kilifi, Jason Wehbe and Hopoate securing a 30-16 victory for the home side.

In a great show of sportsmanship after the fulltime siren, players from both sides linked arms and congratulated each other in the middle of the field.

QUEENSLAND UNDER 16 MAROONS

The Maroons Under 16 team became the first and only Queensland Under Age team to taste success against New South Wales in 2008 when it beat Country NSW in a thriller.

A committed Queensland team won the July 19 clash at the Sunshine Coast’s Stockland Park by two points.

Tries from Japeth Vaoa, Nathan Kepa and Dean Blackman sealed the 12-10 victory for the Queenslanders.

The gutsy win also provided a great start to the representative coaching career of Scott Dunshea.

Dunshea and his support staff ensured the Maroons enjoyed a strong preparation.

This match provided an important representative opportunity for players who narrowly missed out on selection in Queensland’s premier Under 16 team which played NSW in a curtain-raiser to State of Origin 1 in Sydney.

XXXX QUEENSLAND RANGERS

The beautiful Gold and Sunshine Coasts provided the setting for the annual Quadrangular Tournament in July.

The Tournament, aimed at providing players from outside the elite competitions with opportunities in representative football, featured the XXXX Queensland Rangers, Great Britain Community Lions, NSW Country and a Jim Beam Cup selection.

The talented Jim Beam Cup side proved too strong in the final, defeating NSW Country 28-8 on the Sunshine Coast. Queensland Rangers had to settle for third spot after missing the final following losses to NSW Country and Jim Beam Cup.

The two defeats had come after Rangers made a bright start to the Tournament with a 30-16 victory over the Great Britain Community Lions on the Gold Coast.

Ultimately, it was Queensland’s 28-26 loss to NSW Country which cost them any chance of qualifying for the big one.

Rangers gave away a 20-point start before storming back into the contest and hitting the lead at one stage with a flurry of tries.

But the narrow defeat left Rangers needing a big win over the Jim Beam Cup side in the final round match.

But it was the Jim Beam Cup side which racked up the points on their way to a comprehensive 52-12 victory over the Queenslanders.

Rangers were left to play-off for third spot and after a tight opening tussle, Rickie Dodd’s double was enough for the hosts to sink the Lions 34-16.

Queensland back-rower Craig Snell was named the Tournament’s Best Forward at the presentation evening.

The Queensland Rangers team was selected following the annual QRL Divisional Carnival on June 7-8 in Gatton in which the Northern Marlins and the Poinsettias were declared joint winners.

XXXX CITY V XXXX COUNTRY

The tiny Central Queensland town of Clermont came to life when the annual representative clash between City and Country rolled into town on May 31.

The locals turned out in big numbers for the match despite the unfavourable weather conditions.

Both sides produced a high-class display of rugby league, with Country eventually prevailing 25-18 on a slippery surface.

Country had to fight hard for the win after City’s Adam Brideson broke the 12-12 half-time deadlock early in the second half with a neat try.

But Country finished the match full of running to complete back-to-back wins over their City rivals.

Big Tweed forward Selasi Berdie was one of many stars for the successful Country team.

Berdie made the most of his late call up by scoring a try and winning his team’s man-of-the-match award.

Country coach Paul Green said the victory capped off a memorable few days in Clermont which included sight-seeing trips to the mines, lawn bowls with the locals and a pre-match sportsman’s dinner at the Clermont Civic Centre.

In a major boost for rugby league in the region, the City v Country clash featured on the same card as junior and senior games from the Central Highlands competitions.

UNDER AGE CARNIVAL

Under Age representative rugby league adopted a new format in 2008 following the establishment of the National Under 20s competition.

The traditional Under 17 and Under 19 Carnival on the representative calendar was replaced by an Under 16 and Under 18 format.

This Carnival was played in Proserpine from May 3-4.

The Central Capras, Wide Bay Bulls, South West Mustangs, South East Queensland Poinsettias, North Queensland Marlins and the South East Queensland Kookaburras fielded teams in both age groups.

The Carnival produced a high standard of rugby league as the players strived for further representative honours in the Queensland Under 16 and Queensland Under 18 teams.

The best performing Under 16 teams in Proserpine were the Wide Bay Bulls, South East Queensland Poinsettias and Northern Marlins.

The most consistent Under 18 teams were the Central Capras, South West Mustangs and South East Queensland Kookaburras.

FOOTY FILM TO FIGHT THUGS
Story & Photo By : Margo Zlotkowski Cairns Post
FOOTY thugs and abusive parents be warned.

As part of its commitment to stamping out bad behaviour, Cairns District Junior Rugby League is considering filming all matches involving 15 and 16-year-olds next season.

The move comes as the four footy codes – rugby league, Aussie rules, soccer and rugby union – introduce a cross-code ban on misbehaving players and spectators.

What do you think? Post your comment at the bottom of this page.

CDJRL general manager David Maiden said while there had been only isolated problems, the league was determined to crack down on any on-field and off-field violence.

He revealed officials had started recording "hard evidence" on video at selected games after an on-field brawl at an under-15s match between Mossman and Brothers at Mossman in May.

The stoush – which led to three teenage footballers being suspended and a coach to quit in disgust – came a week after two footy mums got into a punch-up during a game between Edmonton Storm and Central Scorpions at Edmonton.

"That was an isolated incident (at Mossman) where people lost their cool but we’ve really cracked down on violence in the last couple of years and the message seems to be getting across," Mr Maiden said.

Mr Maiden said a cross-code ban would be a good way to ensure rule-breakers did not simply "jump codes".

TOWNSVILLE COACHES PLEASED WITH JUNIOR TALENT
Townsville Bulletin
TOWNSVILLE coaches Grant Bell and Todd Wilson are pleased with the talent at their disposal heading into next year's new Queensland Rugby League junior competitions.

Townsville under-18 and under-16 squads have been named following selection trials at the weekend. Townsville will compete with Cairns, Mackay, Wide Bay, Rockhampton and Northern Territory in an eight-week competition, with the leading team in each age group qualifying for national finals.

The national finals will also feature the winners from a southern Queensland competition and four New South Wales teams.

This year's Cowboys under-20s coach Bell will take charge of the under-18 squad, with Townsville Foley Shield coach Wilson to guide the under-16s.

"Both Grant and Todd have said they are pretty happy with the quality of players they had turn out," Townsville and Districts Rugby League president Leigh Anderson said.

"I think we had 43 under-18s and 46 under-16s. We were pretty happy with that."

Anderson said the new competitions promised to be an excellent opportunity for Townsville players.

"Other centres are using Queensland Cup teams as their base, so when we go to Rockhampton we'll be playing the Comets," Anderson said.

"They will be playing in front of Queensland Cup club selectors, so the kids will get looked at.

"The Cowboys have some scholarship players in our squads, they want them to be playing at a higher level than the local competitions."

Anderson said the squads were due to begin training in late January ahead of competition starts in early March.

GAGAI SIGNS ON THE LINE
Mackay Daily Mercury
The Brisbane Broncos have won an inter-code battle for the services of talented Mackay junior Dane Gagai.

Gagai, 17, signed with the Broncos last week after also fielding offers from the North Queensland Cowboys, rugby union's Queensland Reds and the Australian Rugby Union.

The Brisbane Boys College Year 12 student is captain of his school's First XV rugby side and had been tipped for a bright future in the code.

But he has a junior league background playing for Mackay Souths, and his father Ray is a former leading Mackay player who was also recruited by Brisbane in 1989.

The fleet-footed centre will play next season for the Broncos in the under 20 Toyota Cup, Brisbane player welfare manager Scott Czislowski said yesterday.

"Dane came from Mackay to Brisbane Boys College and he's been a real success with rugby," Czislowski said.

"We've been fortunate enough to sign him."

Broncos training re-starts on November 12, but as Gagai is in Year 12 his start will be delayed until December 1, Szislowski said.

After a Christmas break, the players will get back into training in January.

This season the Broncos lost the inaugural under 20 grand final to Canberra in extra time, but it'll be a new side next year.

"We only put the boys into the under 20s for a year and they then go to the Queensland Cup," Szislowski said.

"Only four from that grand final side will play again in under 20s."

The Broncos have affiliations with Queensland Cup teams Wynnum Manly, Redcliffe, Norths and the Central Comets.

Czislowski said Gagai would also work full time in a sports program traineeship.

"He'll go to schools and work with kids in sports programs," he said.

"All the under 20 players must work or study full time, they do their training in the evenings or at the weekend.

"It's one of the rules of the NRL, so they have a career to fall back on if rugby league does not work out."

BLITZ SECURES COWBOYS CUP
The Cairns Post
CAIRNS Brothers added to their cache of junior titles, picking up the under-16 North Queensland Cowboys Cup at Barlow Park yesterday.

Brothers beat Innisfail Leprechauns 42-16, setting the win up with a 24-0 opening half.

VIEW FINALS IN PICTURES.

Brothers added the Cup to the Cairns District Junior Rugby League title they won a fortnight ago and the under-15 ARL Development Cup state title they claimed last year.

Brothers won through to yesterday’s final by beating Eacham DJRL champion Ravenshoe in last week’s qualifying final.

Innisfail premiers Leprechauns earnt their place in the final after finishing on top after the round-robin system and secured direct passage to the final.

Leprechauns pressured early but could not capitalise on their chances and Brothers made them pay in the final stages of the opening term.

"We made a lot of mistakes early but the boys defended very well and then the last 20 minutes they put on a point a minute basically," Brothers coach John Clarke said.

Brothers achieved the win without Queensland representative halfback Ben Hampton, who was injured yesterday, but had plenty of attacking options, with both five-eighth Nathan Kepa and lock Jeremy Yorkston scoring doubles.

Innisfail coach Col Bradtke lamented his team’s inability to score early but was particularly proud of their efforts to fight back.

"We had a couple of opportunities early there but we couldn’t control the ball and we didn’t stick to our plan and because we couldn’t capitalise, when you give Cairns Brothers opportunities after not putting them away, they make you pay for it," Bradtke said.

"I was very proud of them in the second half.

"That’s the way we usually play and it’s just a pity we couldn’t do it for the whole 60 minutes.

"To lose to a class act like Cairns Brothers are, I’m still proud of the kids."

Clarke was thrilled with his team’s ability to withstand pressure in the second half as Innisfail mounted its comeback.

"They did hang on well," he said.

LEGENDS OF LEAGUE
100 YEARS of RUGBY LEAGUE in AUSTRALIA
@ the POWERHOUSE MUSUEM
AUSSIE SCHOOLBOYS TEAM OF THE CENTURY
ourfootyteam.com was lucky enough to be invited to the Junior Rugby League event of the Centenary Year of Rugby League at the Power house Musuem in Sydney.

The ASSRL was announcing the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Team of the Century.

On arriving at the Powerhouse Musuem at Darling Harbour fairly early to avoid getting lost, this writer bumped into the Legendary Mr. Roy Masters.

For the next half an hour we looked through the fantastic Rugby League 100 Years exibition that is on at the Powerhouse Musuem and all the great old photo's, and other cool footy stuff.

Roy Masters was very interested in all these old photo's and we were looking at these blokes celebrating in the dressing room after a grand final, the photos was almost black & white it was so old, then suddenly Roy said, "hey, thats me", sure enough the young fella with his back to the camera was the coach, Roy Masters. That was funny.

There was a fair bit of interest from the main stream media which was great to see them there supporting the Aussie Schoolboys.

The Sunday Footy Show is doing something on Sunday about the Team of the Century, they interviewed current & former Schoolboys, which will be cool, so watch the Sunday Footy Show if you get the chance, along with Ch 10 and the Daily Tele and the Sydney Morning Herald and of course ourfootyteam.com were there on Thursday.

This is the ARL media release from Thursdays Schoolboys Team of the Century presentation, enjoy.

Former Kangaroos including Danny Buderus, Greg Alexander and Bradley Clyde celebrated their Schoolboy roots today at the announcement of a star-studded Australian Secondary Schools Centenary Team.

The greatest Australian Schoolboys team ever assembled saw Buderus named at hooker, Alexander at halfback and Clyde at lock, while McCarthy High’s Brad Fittler was named at five-eighth.

Members from the inaugural 1972 Australian Schoolboys team, who went undefeated in their 13-match tour of Great Britain, were also in attendance at today’s event. From that team, Ian Schubert, Les Boyd and Craig Young gained selection, while coach Roy Masters spoke of his fond memories of that tour.

Former Australia, NSW and Grantham High fullback Tim Brasher took the No.1 jersey while Cronulla’s favourite son Andrew Ettinghausen was picked on the wing.

Balmain Tigers legend Paul Sironen partnered Narrabeen High’s Steve Menzies in the second row, while modern-day sensations Mark Gasnier, Justin Hodges, Tonie Carroll, Greg Inglis, Matthew Gidley and Brent Tate completed the lineup.

“Schoolboy Rugby League is an important part of our game and to be named in this side, particularly alongside such amazing players, is a real honour,” former Patrician Brother Fairfield student Greg Alexander said today.

“I have great memories playing for St Francis Xavier and when I was picked for the Australian Schoolboys I’ll never forget it because it was my first time in the green and gold colours,” Danny Buderus said.

“The pride that came with pulling on the jumper, you were playing for Australia and it was a huge thrill for kids our age.”

Current and former players and officials gathered at Sydney’s Powerhouse Museum this morning to present team members with a commemorative Australian Schoolboys jersey provided by longtime sponsors Classic.

Classic, who this year are celebrating 75 years of manufacturing Rugby League merchandise, took today’s opportunity to announce further support for Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League, extending their sponsorship with the ASSRL for another 10 years until June 2018.

Members of the 2008 Australian Schoolboys team, which this year regained the World Youth Championship with Test wins over France and England, accepted the jerseys for those players absent due to NRL finals preparation.

“To see and meet the players who have represented the Australian Schoolboys before us really hits home what an honour it is to make the side,” 2008 Australian Schoolboys Captain Tim Auremi said.

Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League President Bruce Wallace said the Australian Schoolboys Centenary Team celebrated the ASSRL’s role in the development of future first-grade players.

“For many players selection in an Australian Schoolboys side is the first step to greater heights,” Wallace said today.

“The Test matches bring with them a lot of pressure and emotion and it’s a terrific way to introduce young players to representative football.

“These players represent the very best to come through Australia’s secondary schools and we’re very proud to be able to announce a team of this calibre – the players in this team are all legends of the game.”

Today’s event, hosted by ARL Development, brought together some of the game’s top officials including ARL Chief Executive Geoff Carr, NRL CEO David Gallop, ASSRL officials and life members, and representatives from several high schools around the state.

ARL Development General Manager Bill Palmer said the event was a perfect opportunity to illustrate the link between the grass roots Rugby League and Schoolboy Rugby League at the elite level.

“We’re very strong supporters of school-based Rugby League and always viewed the Secondary Schoolboy Championships as the epitome of that process,” Palmer said today.

“We are proud to sponsor the ASSRL’s National Schoolboy Championships and particularly pleased to sponsor today’s event as the Schoolboys Centenary Team is certainly a team worthy of plenty of recognition.” | LEARN MORE ABOUT ASSRL | CHECKOUT THE PHOTO'S |

SUCCESS BRINGS CRITISIM AND NO RESPECT.

The Nerang under 14s are cosidered to be one of the form teams on the gold coast, the boys train hard and are extremley committed to the game of rugby league.

11 of the boys gained selection in the Goldcoast Vikings rep team with 6 of them progressing to selection in the south east kookaburras side to play in the state carnival in cairns, the team remain un beaten this season and have just wont the presidents cup for 2008, have scored 430 points for and only 8 points against, many are under scholorship program at Keebra High and a few of them are involved at an elite level with NRL clubs.

Having said all of that the boys and parents are slowly losing interest in the game and wondering if there efforts although recognised are infact worth the abuse and critisism that the team recieves is pathetic and for what (being good) your kidding.

Its demoralising for the boys who train real hard only to know by the end of the week the team thay have drawn to play will and do infact forfiet and this happens every weekend which is a disgrace and the district say all they can do about it is advise the team to advance an age group so that we have some form of cometition, which is an issue only because some of these boys will not turn 14 until after the season finishes so they will be playing against players that are 2 years in advance in all areas.

Although the district thought that this was a great idea they advise the coach and manager that the parents would have to sign a disclosure that the district wouldn't be responsiable if the players were hurt doing this , but it was the districts idea to do this.

The lack of support and continuious critisism that the team has recieves is starting to take its toll, some have looked at other codes, some have looked at walking away which is a poor reflection on the game they love, the boys are boys are just want to play footy and have the right to be able to compete within there own age group, we say train hard , play well, play fair and enjoy this great game.

We say strive to be the very best you can be which is hypocitical because it seams that if you do succeed and do everything that the districts say to do and to achieve what they suggest then you recieve no support from the people that should support them. in thwe words of one of our players " if achieved but feel like a loser" and that is so sad to hear those words from kids that just WANT TO PLAY FOOTY.

QUEENSLAND TEAM OF THE CENTURY

THE Queensland Team of the Century was unveiled last night at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre in front of more than 1700 enthusiastic guests.

All five Queenslanders in the Australian Team of the Century – Arthur Beetson, Wally Lewis, Mal Meninga, Noel Kelly and Duncan Hall – made the Queensland team.

The star-studded side included seven State of Origin players.

Six players – Cecil Aynsley, Tom Gorman, Mick Madsen, Jimmy Craig, Duncan Thompson and Herb Steinohrt – played in the 1920s, an era often referred to as the golden age of Queensland Rugby League.

Wally Lewis was named captain, with Wayne Bennett the coach.

QLD TEAM of the CENTURY PLAYER PROFILES

DARREN LOCKYER
Position: Fullback
Club: Brisbane Broncos 1995–2008

Darren Lockyer is a Roma lad, who was discovered by the Broncos’ super talent scout Cyril Connell. Like most true champions, Lockyer stood out from an early age — a product of the Queensland under-age teams, he played first grade at the Broncos in 1995 at 18 years of age, as a five-eighth.

His exceptional skills marked him as something special. He had great hands, could both punt and place-kick, was sure under the high ball, was deceptively fast, having an ability to go up a gear as he went for an opening, and he could tackle. He also never lost that shyness and modesty characteristic of many country people.

Perhaps 2003 was Lockyer’s most sensational year, as he won the player-of-the year award at the Broncos and led the Kangaroos, only the fourth Queenslanders to do so, after Tom Gorman, Wally Lewis and Mal Meninga.

One of the features of his play was his consistency, as well as the ability to rise to the occasion. He won the Clive Churchill Medal in 2000, and in 2006 led the Broncos to the premiership, Queensland to an Origin series, and Australia to victory in the Tri-Nations tournament. The all-round nature of Lockyer’s game was seen in 2004, when he moved from fullback, where he played most of his football during the previous seven seasons, to five-eighth, and handled the switch with aplomb.

Club landmarks: Won premierships with Brisbane 1997–98, 2000, 2006 (captain); Holds Brisbane club record for most appearances (275); most points (1134) and most points in a season (272);
Games for Qld: 29 (1997–2007; includes 27 State of Origins 1998–2007);
Tests for Australia: 36 (1998–2007) — 20 as captain; World Cup matches: Five (2000)
Representative landmarks: Kangaroo tours 2001, 2003 (captain); World Cup 2000; Tri-Nations tours 2004–05 (captain)

CECIL AYNSLEY
Position: Wing
Clubs: Federals, Charters Towers 1918–21; Western Suburbs, Brisbane 1922–1925, Starlights; Ipswich 1926–30; Rochdale Hornets 1930–35

An electrifying winger, Cec Aynsley contributed to Queensland’s interstate dominance of the 1920s. The Queensland Rugby League Gazette of 1946 said he ‘was idolised by the crowds, not only because of his uncanny wing pace and elusiveness, but because of the wizardry of his goal kicking’.

Originally from Charters Towers, North Queensland, Aynsley played first grade at the age of 16 before heading south in 1922 to join Brisbane’s Western Suburbs. He won a premiership in his first year with Wests and became a regular for the Maroons throughout the 1920s, scoring 12 tries in 16 interstate matches. He performed phenomenally on Queensland’s 1925 tour of New Zealand, scoring 31 tries in 10 tour games.

Aynsley’s rise to Test honours was equally rapid. In 1924, he played alongside legendary three-quarters Harold Horder, Tom Gorman and Cec Blinkhorn in the first Ashes Test in Sydney, scoring Australia’s only try; a feat he repeated in the second Test played five days later. In the third Test, he was part of an all-Queensland backline that helped salvage a 21–11 victory at Brisbane’s Exhibition Ground.

Aynsley’s final Test appearance was in the first Test against Sullivan’s English tourists of 1928. A serious knee injury ruled him out for the remainder of the series and cost him any chance of touring with the 1929–30 Kangaroos. He joined the Rochdale Hornets club in 1930 and stayed five seasons.

TOM GORMAN
Position: Centre
Clubs: Toowoomba Brothers 1920–25; Brisbane Brothers 1926–30

The views of men who played alongside Tom Gorman tell more of him than anything else ever could. Duncan Thompson wrote: ‘Tommy Gorman was an artist … he shunned such crudities as power and beat men with acceleration and swerve that was just sheer grace. Having once seen him, I knew I had seen greatness.’

In 1929–30, on the tour of Chimpy Busch’s famous no try in the third Test, Gorman became the first Queenslander to captain a Kangaroo team, taking his men to within an inch of the Ashes and winning enormous respect for his leadership. ‘Tom Gorman’s presence in this country will be remembered for years to come by all who have met him and seen him play,’ declared George Mott, chairman of the Council at Ilkley, home base of the Kangaroos. Herb Steinohrt — when picking his best Australian side from the years 1922 to 1940 — had no hesitation in putting Gorman in the centres, alongside Dave Brown.

Gorman holds a special place in the story of rugby league in Queensland.

Born in Charters Towers, he became an integral part of the Toowoomba football miracle of the 1920s, forging a famous centre partnership with Nigger Brown. For 12 years, he was an automatic selection in the Queensland team. ‘If you can imagine such a thing as a mixture of that quick-thinking animal the fox, the speed of an Arab horse and the slipperiness of an eel, you have Tom Gorman,’ commented the journal Midweek Sports in 1926.

MAL MENINGA
Position: Centre
Clubs: Souths Brisbane 1979–85; St Helens 1984–85; Canberra 1986–94

Mal Meninga’s endless list of records and achievements stands as a testament to the strength and perseverance he displayed over a magnificent 17-year career in top level football. The former police cadet burst onto the scene with Souths in Brisbane in 1978 and was a Queensland representative the following season and an Australian rep soon after his 22nd birthday.

Meninga had been blessed with size and strength and used those qualities to their fullest. He is the only player to tour four times with the Kangaroos and the only player to make two Kangaroo tours as captain. And he achieved much of this after he withstood the pain and frustration of four broken arms during the 1987–88 seasons.

Meninga recovered from the setbacks as a more mature and more consistent player. ‘The true test of a champion is not just what he does as an individual,’ said Bob Fulton of Meninga. ‘It’s what he does for the players around him.’ Meninga was renowned for charges through the defence, and captained Canberra to three premiership wins. Perhaps his most memorable performance came at Old Trafford in 1990; when he helped Australia to salvage the Ashes with a barnstorming try in the final minutes of the second Test.

Mal Meninga wrote in My Game, Your Game: ‘Geno was my toughest opposition when it came to making the Test side. When Geno had the ball you had to make a concerted effort to tackle him. He was very quick for a big man, he had a step and if you did get to him he had a good off-load. His defence was strong and Geno was always willing to work hard to take pressure off other players.

DENIS FLANNERY
Position: Wing
Club: Ipswich Brothers 1947–58

Denis Flannery was one of Queensland’s rugby league greats of the 1950s. A champion sprinter and a winger possessed of a sweet sidestep and a swerve that made opponents look like amateurs, Flannery was a regular in Australian sides for much of that decade.

A product of Nudgee College and Ipswich Grammar School, Flannery made his debut for Queensland in 1948 and won his first Australian cap in the second Ashes Test of 1950, when Australia stunned Great Britain 15–3 at the Brisbane Cricket Ground. He stood 6ft (183cm) tall, and weighed 13 stone (82.5kg), and played Test football in 1951 and 1952, was in the Australian World Cup squad in 1954, and continued to represent Queensland and Australia until 1956, bowing out of big-time football after the 1956–57 Kangaroo tour. On the ’52–53 Kangaroo tour, he scored 23 tries in 14 games, including hat-tricks against Featherstone Rovers, Doncaster and Hull Kingston Rovers.

Flannery continued with Brothers, serving as player-coach in 1957 and 1958 before retiring at the age of 30. Flannery married Norma Dempsey, the daughter of the former great Kangaroo Dan Dempsey, and he and Norma became the owners of the famous Ulster Hotel at Ipswich.

WALLY LEWIS AM
Position: Five-Eighth
Clubs: Brisbane Valleys 1978–83; Wakefield Trinity 1983–84; Wynnum-Manly 1984–87; Brisbane Broncos 1988–90; Gold Coast 1991–92

‘King’ Wally Lewis came to embody State of Origin football. A young lock forward in the inaugural Origin game in 1980, he made 30 appearances as five-eighth and captain between 1981 and 1991, winning eight man-of-the match awards.

Lewis made his Test debut in 1981, against France, the only Queensland-based player in the side. He lost the starting five-eighth job to Brett Kenny on the 1982 Kangaroo tour, but regained the No. 6 jumper in 1983 and was unchallenged as Australian captain from 1984 to 1989.

Lewis was tough, brave and passionate, with a magnificent kicking game and a brilliant pass. In the second Test at Wigan in 1982 he came on in the second half and threw a 25–metre bullet that set up a try for Mal Meninga. His kicking display on a muddy SCG in game two of the 1984 Origin series was phenomenal, as he kept turning the Blues around to seal the series. At the Sydney Football Stadium in 1989, with Queensland shattered by injury, he inspired one of the most courageous victories seen in modern rugby league. That last performance convinced even NSW fans of his greatness.

Lewis dominated Brisbane club football in the ’80s, with Valleys and then Wynnum-Manly. He was a good but rarely great player with the Brisbane Broncos and Gold Coast Seagulls, but his legendary status was already sealed. Following his retirement, a bronze statue was erected at Lang Park, and in 1999 he was named an ‘Immortal’.

ALLAN LANGER
Position: Halfback
Clubs: Ipswich Norths 1984–85; Ipswich Jets 1986–87; Brisbane Broncos 1988–99, 2002; Warrington 2000–01

There has to be something about Ipswich, as it has been the breeding ground of so many great rugby league players, such as Dud Beattie, the Walters boys, Henry Bichel, John Cleary, Dan Dempsey, Frank Doonar, Denis Flannery, Eric Frauenfelder, Hec Gee, Ron Griffiths, ‘Monty’ Heidke, Noel Kelly, Doug McLean, Gary Parcell, Bill Paten, Les Sellers, Bill Smith, Bob Tubman and Joe Wilson. There was also Jimmy Craig, but he was an import. Great players all, but in the eyes of most critics, Allan Langer would reign supreme among them.

A man of jockey-like size, Langer was never daunted by bigger players, bringing them down with remarkable ease. His first Origin game was in 1987, when his selection was criticised but he proved the sceptics wrong, and his last in 2002, a year after he returned from Warrington in England, where he had been playing, to inspire the Maroons to a series win. His final club game was the 2002 preliminary final.

Langer won a Rothmans Medal in Brisbane, the Clive Churchill Medal, led the Broncos to three grand-final wins and a Super League crown and captained his country. Wayne Bennett wrote of him in Don’t Die With The Music In You: ‘Pound-for-pound … he was rugby league’s top performer of the 1990s. Day in, day out. Year after year. By “performer”, I’m not just talking natural gifts. He has those, but what he also has is a determination and dedication to always put in.’

PETER ‘MICK’ MADSEN
Position: Prop
Club: Brothers Toowoomba 1921–37

In 1982, when Rugby League Week magazine assembled a most distinguished panel of judges in the game’s history to pick a ‘Hall of Fame’ Australian rugby league XIII, their most discussed choice was front-rower ‘Mick’ Madsen. The judges were emphatic in placing him alongside fellow Queenslander Duncan Hall and Easts’ Sandy Pearce in the front row.

An immensely strong man, Madsen was a foundation stone of Queensland and Toowoomba’s rise to the dominant place in Australian rugby league in the 1920s. He represented Toowoomba every year from 1925 to 1937, played 40 games for Queensland, nine Tests and 37 tour matches for Australia. With regular captain Frank McMillan injured, he assumed the leadership for the second Ashes Test on the 1933–34 tour. In the 1970s, Duncan Thompson named Madsen and Herb Steinohrt as the greatest of all prop combinations, describing them as ‘rough men in rough positions, yet surprisingly polished in ball handling and distribution’.

Madsen was a big man, 6ft 1in (185cms) and 15 stone (96kg), who played with his sleeves rolled up. Stories of strength and courage accompanied him through his career. ‘Nature’s gentleman … tough as they come,’ said Joe Pearce.

An enduring symbol of the stoutness and honesty of the country player, Madsen retired in 1937 and the great administrator Harry Sunderland would write poignantly of a powerful run he made in his final interstate game. ‘We who have known his true worth as a gentleman and a player,’ Sunderland commented, ‘will never allow to fade from our memories that last charge that he made.’

NOEL KELLY
Position: Hooker
Clubs: Ipswich Brothers 1958–59; Ayr 1960; Western Suburbs 1961–69; Wollongong 1970

By touring with the Kangaroos in 1959–60, 1963–64 and 1967–68, Noel Kelly earned the distinction of being the first front-rower to make rugby league’s most distinguished journey three times. In all, Kelly played 25 Tests in the Australian engine room at a time rugby league was at its roughest and toughest.

Statistics from Kelly’s career give a clue to how tough the game was … and how tough he was. In his career with Wests in Sydney, ‘Ned’ was sent off 17 times, though some were for scrum ‘wheeling and dealing’ in days when every scrum was a mini ‘war’. In the second Australia–New Zealand Test of 1967, he and the big Kiwi Robin Orchard were sent off in the first 90 seconds, Ned having rendered Orchard horizontal with a left hook.

Events such as that one and plenty more (such as his joyful dive for a try during the record-breaking 50–12 second Test win that claimed the Ashes in 1963) made Kelly one of the most robust and popular players to ever pull on a boot. Originally from the Queensland country, and a hooker, Kelly became a Test prop alongside another hard man from the bush, Ian Walsh, and remained equally effective in both positions. At Wests, he was a natural leader, taking over as captain-coach in 1966. After leaving the Magpies, he played and coached briefly in Wollongong, and then stepped back into the spotlight in the 1970s, as coach of Norths for three lively years.

DUNCAN HALL
Position: Prop
Clubs: Christian Brothers Rockhampton 1945–47; Brisbane Valleys 1948–49; Home Hill 1950; Newtown, Toowoomba 1951–52; Brisbane Wests 1954–57

Queensland-born Duncan Hall has long been regarded as one of Australia’s greatest post-war front-rowers. He rose to prominence in the period immediately following World War II, toured twice with the Kangaroos and played in two Ashes-winning series for Australia.

Hall had accepted a playing position at Alpha in Central Queensland in the mid-1940s, but a railway strike meant he was unable to take up the position, and instead he moved to Brisbane, where he linked up with the Valleys club. From there he made a meteoric rise to representative football, first with Brisbane, then Queensland and in little more than three months he was selected in Australia’s Test side to play New Zealand.

Hall became a mainstay of Australian teams for the next seven years, contributing mightily to Australia’s Ashes triumphs in 1950 and 1954. Hall played his entire domestic career in Queensland, moving from Valleys back to his home town of Home Hill in 1950, before stints in Toowoomba and with Brisbane Wests. A knee injury cost him the opportunity of a third Kangaroo tour in 1956.

‘Hall had an equal distribution of brawn and brains which put him in the near genius class,’ Duncan Thompson wrote. ‘There certainly never was a better ball distributor. Whatever a champion prop needed, Duncan Hall had. He was surprisingly fast and truly tough.’

BRIAN DAVIES
Position: Second Row
Clubs: Brisbane Brothers 1948–58, 1964; Canterbury 1959–62; St George (Qld) 1963

Brian Davies ranks as one of Queensland’s greatest and most distinguished forwards. Great Britain’s great five eighth David Bolton, who tangled with him in the 1958 series said, ‘Davies was as fit and as determined as any man I have ever played against.’

That ’58 series, although a losing one for Australia, was a crowning achievement of Davies’ career, as he had the honour of leading Australia in all three Tests against Alan Prescott’s tourists. His first taste of international football had come long before — back in the history-making series of 1950 when he was a reserve in the Australian squad but didn’t get to put a foot onto the field of battle. In 1951, as a second-rower, he made his debut, playing in all three Tests against the French.

Graduating to prop, Davies made two Kangaroo tours and played in the first two World Cups. On the arrival home of the 1952–53 Kangaroos, team manager Latchem Robinson identified the greatness of Davies, naming him man of the tour. Said Robinson: ‘Davies developed into a colossal forward overseas and must now rank with the all-time great second-rowers.’

Four years later, Britain’s Official Rugby League Yearbook nominated Davies as the most constructive of the Australian forwards. In 1958, his last international campaign, captain Davies was the only resident Queenslander in the Australian team which fell 2–1 to Great Britain.

ARTHUR BEETSON OAM
Position: Second Row
Clubs: Roma Cities 1963; Redcliffe 1964–65, 1981; Balmain 1966–70; Hull Kingston Rovers 1968–68; Eastern Suburbs 1971–78; Parramatta 1979–80

Arthur Beetson’s future talents as a ball-playing front-rower were honed in his teenage years when he played at centre or five-eighth in his home-town of Roma in western Queensland. It wasn’t until he arrived in the big smoke of Brisbane in 1965 that coach Henry Holloway suggested a move into the forwards. There, Beetson established himself as arguably the finest ball-playing front-rower of a generation.

He headed to Sydney a year after claiming a premiership with Redcliffe and made his name at Balmain, where he was coached by Harry Bath. Beetson represented Australia in his first season in Sydney, earning the nickname ‘Half-a-game Artie’ after a marvellous cameo in the Ashes-deciding third Test against Great Britain. Struggling with a shoulder injury, Beetson laid on tries for wingers Johnny King and Ken Irvine that helped to secure the Ashes for Australia.

Beetson switched to Eastern Suburbs in 1971 where he developed his skills further under coaches Don Furner and later Jack Gibson and led the Roosters to consecutive premiership wins. He captained Queensland in the inaugural State of Origin match in 1980, which ushered in a new era for the game. Beetson was named Rugby League Week’s seventh Immortal in 2003.

BOB LINDNER
Position: Lock
Clubs: Brisbane Souths 1983–84; Wynnum-Manly 1985–86; Castleford 1986–87; Parramatta 1987–88; Gold Coast 1989; Western Suburbs 1990–92; Illawarra 1993; Oldham 1993–94

Bob Lindner, a big, bustling forward, was a virtual automatic pick for Queensland and Australia between 1986 and 1993. A mighty forward despite three broken legs at critical points of his career, the highlight of his football life was probably the 1990 Kangaroo tour. This is what the experts said:

Peter Frilingos (Telegraph Mirror): ‘I haven’t seen Bob Lindner play even a moderate game on tour … he’s been the outstanding performer.’

Tony Durkin (Rugby League Week): ‘Lindner’s performances after the first match were nothing short of magnificent.’

Ray Hadley (Radio 2UE): ‘I’d have to take Lindner as the best player from Glenn Lazarus ...’

Mal Meninga wrote of Lindner in My Game, Your Game, ‘There has been no greater competitor than Lindner, whose Test and State of Origin performances often won him man-of-the-match status … Bobby is in the Bradley Clyde mould of perpetual motion and has the speed and strength to match any back-rower of his era.’

Lindner also went on the 1986 Kangaroo tour, and the 1992 World Cup. At Oldham in England he was captain-coach and averted their relegation to the second division. He was recruited by the South Queensland Crushers as a player in 1995, but retired and took over as coach until their demise in 1997.

JIMMY CRAIG
Position: Centre/Wing/Fullback/Halfback
Clubs: Balmain 1915–17, 1919–21; University 1922; Starlights, Ipswich 1923–28; Western Suburbs, Sydney 1929–30

In the rugby league seasons between the two World Wars, the name Jimmy Craig was synonymous with versatility. A Balmain junior, Craig could play any position in the backline and was even known to fill in at lock forward or hooker. In seven Tests for Australia he played fullback, centre and halfback and was once described by the legendary Dally Messenger as the greatest player he ever saw.

Craig figured in premiership wins for Balmain in 1915–17 and 1919–20. Significantly, in 1918, when Craig did not play for the club, Balmain failed to win the title. He was a star of the 1921–22 Kangaroos and later took his talents to Queensland, where his Ipswich team became a power of the game in the Bulimba Cup.

Craig returned to Sydney in 1929, joining Wests, and as captain-coach led the club to its first premiership success in 1930. During that season, Craig appeared in four positions in one game against Easts. The Evening News reported that Craig, who started at halfback, packed into the second row at one point of the first half while hooker Bob Lindfield was down injured. Later in the half, according to the paper ‘Craig occasionally went in to lock the scrum’. And in the minutes before halftime, ‘Craig had now fallen to fullback, with McMillan an extra five-eighth’.

DUNCAN THOMPSON
Position: Halfback
Clubs: St Paul’s Ipswich 1911–15; Newcastle Wests 1915; North Sydney 1916, 1920–23; Starlights, Ipswich 1919; Toowoomba Valleys 1924–25

Duncan Thompson was regarded as one of the sharpest halfback tacticians ever to play the game. His ability to create an overlap, to surprise opponents with a blindside rush, or to beat a man with a pass was said to be years ahead of its time.

Thompson’s career was almost cut short by World War I, when he suffered a gunshot wound that led to doctors informing him that he would never play sport again. But Thompson defied the medicos, resuming his rugby league career in 1919. A transfer with the bank resulted in Thompson linking with North Sydney in 1920, where he was to guide the club to successive premiership victories in 1921–22 (the second year as captain). He played nine Tests for Australia, including the second Test against England in 1920 when Australia won the Ashes for the first time at home. Thompson was a controversial selection, but he silenced any detractors with a display that was regarded as one of the finest ever by a halfback.

Thompson returned to Queensland and was a force behind the emergence of the Toowoomba Clydesdales as a powerhouse of the game. To the great Queensland and Australian front-rower Herb Steinohrt, he was ‘without a doubt the best attacking halfback in the history of the game’. Thompson later turned to coaching where many of his philosophies became the accepted practice throughout the game.

GENE MILES
Position: Centre/Second Row
Clubs: Townsville Souths 1978–80; Wynnum-Manly 1981–87; Brisbane Broncos 1988–91; Wigan 1991–92

Gene Miles was an immensely powerful player, equally adept in the centre or the forwards, and was one of those who put back into the game almost as much as he got out of it. In 2007, he was still playing a vital role in selecting Queensland Origin teams.

There have been few greater sights on the playing field than Miles in full stride, holding off a would-be tackler and throwing his virtually patented one-handed pass to one of his team.

Born in Townsville, Miles made an immediate impact with Wynnum-Manly in 1980, and played his first Origin match in 1982. A member of two Kangaroo touring squads, 1982 and 1986, his top years were arguably from 1984 to 1986. In 1990 he retired from international football, but captained the Broncos until 1991, when he was Dally M captain of the year. He then left for Wigan, where he experienced wins in the Challenge Cup and League Championship.

HERB STEINOHRT
Position: Prop
Clubs: Warra 1919–21; Toowoomba Valleys 1922–38

Born in 1899, raw-boned Herb Steinohrt grew into one of champion forwards of the 1920s and 1930s. Steinohrt was renowned for his hardness and great strength. A prop and second-rower, he came to Toowoomba in 1922 and represented the city 125 times during the legendary era of the ‘Galloping Clydesdales’. He also played for Queensland continually from 1925 to 1933, and for Australia 31 times, including nine Tests.

Steinohrt was a key figure in the Queensland teams that dominated NSW in the 1920s, was an automatic selection for three straight Test series, in 1928, 1929–30 and 1932, and he had the honour of leading Australia in all three Tests against England in 1932. One of those Tests in ’32 was the infamous ‘Battle of Brisbane’, a game that Australia won heroically despite a number of players, including hooker Dan Dempsey and lock Frank O’Connor, were badly injured. At the final whistle, the crowd carried captain Steinohrt from the field in triumph.

A champion player and a man who worked for rugby league throughout his life (he was still a coach and administrator at 75!), Steinohrt remains a revered figure in the story of Queensland sport, tagged an ‘Immortal’ in a tribute by long-time QRL President Ron McAuliffe. Those who played with him were rich in their praise. Duncan Thompson claimed that ‘he had stamina and strength, and the football brain to go with it’, while Mick Madsen, Steinohrt’s famous forward partner of many battles, remembered him as ‘one of the great tacticians of the game’.

HOME GAMES SUCCESS

What a great turn-out for our first home game of the year. A big thank you to the many helpers and supporters who offered input in staging an awesome family day out, in which14 games of footy were played.

“This success gives us a sniff of what’s to come with the upcoming carnival July 6 - 11.

“This carnival in July will showcase the cream of under-12 footballers from across Queensland eager to claim the title for 2008 in this five-day event.

“We need all the community support we can raise to make this carnival the best ever. We urge families who could assist is billeting visiting players to please offer your support. Other than the lack of billets the organisation and planning is running along smoothly thanks to the dedicated hand full of parents organising this event,” LRJRL president George McCormick, said.

Among the football we had the opportunity to host the nationally screened Bare foot Rugby League Show on the day. This has promoted our Junior Rugby League Club, players and community.

Host and former NRL star Wes Patten has indicated the possible return to Spider Brown Oval for the upcoming Queensland Zone five under-12 carnival planned for July 6 - 11.

The program is due to be aired on Austar channel 180 tomorrow or the following Thursday at 6.30pm. Thank you to Mr Chris ‘Gummy’ Lamb for organising the visit.

OPALS

GAME ONE: The first game saw our Opals come up against our other Tiger Cub team the Diggers. Always a tough encounter as all Lightning Ridge under-8s are improving every week.

The Opals defended really well, with Ian Woodcock, Xhana Tishler, Ryan Brown and birthday boy Jett Tishler leading the way in defence. Some great runs were seen by Joshua Doctor and Lucy McBride. Winston McBride was outstanding, out pacing the opposition to run in four tries. Man-of-the-match Oscar Cheal pulled off some try saving tackles and had some great runs. All players ran the ball really well, tackled and show great teamwork.

FINAL SCORE OPALS 16 - NOBBIES 12

GAME TWO: A revved up Opals matched up against St George White in front of the home crowd. Another tough game, the Opals worked hard in defence to keep the Dragons out for the majority of the game. Jasmine Tooth scored a great try in the corner. Jett and Winston once again consistent in defence and attack, with Jett scoring two tries and Winston crossing the line for four.

In the last set Jailyn Webb off-loaded the ball for Winston to go over the try line to score for the Opals, well done and great teamwork Jailyn. Man-of-the-match Ryan Brown is becoming a player to be noticed, involved in every tackle and making valued metres with the ball. Congratulations to Winston McBride who was awarded the Harlequin Cafe ‘best on the day’.

FINAL SCORE OPALS 28 - 20

NOBBIES

GAME ONE: Our first game put us up against our own. The Opals looked bigger and tougher than we remembered. With nine Nobbies players it meant we had one on the sideline and no one wanted to be there. Ben Smith, Cameron Summers, Luke Clauss, Doug Winch, Dylan Ciprian, Archer Holz, Madison Drew, Rylan Simms and Tom Barrett all had a great game.

We tried hard and kept it fairly even for most of the game, Archer scored two tries and Madison scored one.

The Opals got away by one, the end score was 16 - 12 to the Opals. Doug put in an enormous effort with his tackles and almost scored a try earning man of the match. Luke, Cameron, Rylan and Ben came close to getting over the line as well. Dylan, Maddy and Tom were unbelievable in defence.

GAME TWO: Mungindi. Nobbies focused, cranky for just missing out by one and hungry for the win.

We went in unforgivingly, fast and strong every player stepped up. Dan McIntosh came in after calling in sick for the first game. We didn’t look like the same team all were there in defence, back up and attack. Ben and Cameron scored one try each, Archer two and Rylan Simms came in for his first try of the season with the camera right on him. Cippo you were again the quiet achiever who is proving very valuable.

The final score Nobbies 24 - Mungindi 12. Man Of the Match Rylan Simms and the Harlequin Cafe ‘player of the day’ went to Archer Holz.

UNDER-10S

GAME ONE - Top-of-the-table under-10s matched up against the highly-regarded St George White team. In a fine start to the day the Tigers ran out 24 - 4 victors in a powerful team display. Patrick Knight earned himself man-of-the-match with intimidating bursts up the blind side making good ground every time he touched the ball. Good service from halves Bella McKenzie, Rory Cheal, Samuel Jackson-Bolton and Kyle McGovern had the St George defence in two minds and regularly on the back foot.

Standouts were Tom ‘Rambo’ O’Brien, Jake Henry, Jake Peden, Rusty Dean, Dallas Woodcock, Mitchell Cummings and Josh McCormick. Good team effort 10s.

GAME TWO - The much improved Mungindi Grasshoppers were next on the list as the four hour break between games took away the momentum of the Tigers team. In a see-sawing game the Tigers eventually put them away 36 -24. Samuel, Rory, Kyle,Tom, Jack Thompson and new boy Brody Tzvetkoff showed good skills. Man-of-the-match Samuel Jackson-Bolton. Congratulations to Samuel Lollback who earned himself “best on the day” and was awarded a burger and drink voucher from the Harlequin Cafe. Well done Tigers.

UNDER-12S

The under-12s suffered to the hands of St. George Red.

Darcy Kidd scored the first try in the opening minutes of the game and Van O’Brien also scored a try in the closing minutes of the first half. With only 11 players allowed on the field and nine on the bench, inter-changes were frequent. The boys played well but couldn’t really settle into any game plans due to so many interchanges. Man of the match went to Robert ‘hit man’ Thomson. The Harlequin Cafe ‘player of the day’ went to Nathan Dean our new halfback. Welcome also to Max Hall who played his first game out on the wing.

UNDER-14S

Under-14s started out great, scoring in the first five minutes, but not moving off the line together put St George in for a few tries. The Tigers stayed in the game with some great runs in the forwards and backs, which helped them score again. There were some great tackles by the Tigers, but not enough to keep St George from getting over the line a few more times. The Ridge came back in the end but it was too late as St George had already run away with the game. The under-14s travel to Brewarrina this weekend to take part in the CRL competition.

We have a rest weekend for the long weekend. Next games are at Mungindi June 14. The under-10s will once again take the paddock at 8.30am. Training will continue as usual.

If you are able to take in a billet or two for the carnival week please contact Kelly Tishler on 0428613322. If you can help out the week of the carnival please contact Amanda Cheal on 0429955937 or George McCormick on 0439024902.

A carnival meeting will be held at the Bowling Club at 7pm Monday June 9, please attend, as many people as possible are needed.

Congratulations to Graham Ruttley who won our Junior League jersey raffle and to Debbie Beno who picked the joker on Friday night taking home $3800. The cash pot joker will kick off this week at $2000. Tickets go on sale from 6.30pm Friday night at the Hotel Motel.
“CAPRAS EARN STATE SELECTION”

After a successful 2008 State Carnival in Proserpine at the weekend, eight Central Queensland Capras will pull on Maroon jerseys following the announcement of the under 16 and 18 Queensland teams today.

Kyle Burkhardt heads the honour roll with the talented forward to represent Queensland against New South Wales in a curtain raiser to the opening Harvey Norman State of Origin match at ANZ Stadium on May 21.

Burkhardt, who will start from the bench, produced two powerhouse performances for the under 16 Capras.

Teammates Aiona Nona, Dean Blackman and Cameron Wilson will turn out for the Queensland Maroons when they play New South Wales Country at Quad Park, Kawana on July 19.

The Capras gained four selections in the Queensland under 18 Maroons team. Anthony Raymond will start at fullback with Jayden Taylor and Lyndon Law occupying a wing and centre position respectively.

David McLellan gained plaudits for his tireless efforts earning a spot in the front row.

The under 18 Maroons will also face New South Wales Country at Quad Park on July 19.

Division Manager Shaun Kelly praised the efforts of the 8 players selected.

“The boys were outstanding for their teams across the two days of the carnival and thoroughly deserved their selection”.

But while there was delight for those who made Queensland selection, there were also some hard luck stories.

“Many thought that the likes of Matt Minto, Joseph Collins-Soo, Reece Baker and Maipele Morseau just to name a few, were desperately unlucky to miss selection” added Kelly.

Kyle Burkhardt will join his Queensland teammates in camp on Friday May 16.
