KEEBRA DOWN COOMBABAH IN RENOUF AND HANCOCK CUPS

Keebra Park kept their unbeaten streak in junior Broncos competitions this week with wins in the Under 13 and 14 age groups over Coombabh State High.

The 13's managed a 42-12 scoreline over with some entertaining structured football while in the fourteens it was a much closer result with Keebra edging out Coombabah by 2 points 20-18.

Both these teams have been training well and the fourteens was a particularly good win over the Coombabah "State" champion side.

In the earlier game the Keebra Struddy's side proved too strong for Sandgate and made it 3 from 3 on a night that was perfect for football.

Next week is the Easter break but there is plenty more football to come in term two so watch this space.
GLEN INNES HIGH V COOMABABAH HIGH

Although the rugby league season has finished for most, the members Glen Innes High School's Gifted and Talented Rugby League Program (GATRL) are gearing up for one of the biggest matches on their calendar. The annual inter-school clash between Glen Innes High School and Coomababah High School from the Gold Coast begins tonight and Glen Innes is hoping for strong results.

The Queenslanders present a tough opposition.

They are one of the top ranked rugby league high schools in their state and are ranked in the top five in most age-groups.

Former Glen Innes Magpie and Glen Innes High School student Rodney Pryor is the rugby league co-ordinator at Coomababah and he was one of the main instigators in organising the annual event.

Coomababah will bring four sides to Glen Innes, with players ranging from ages 13 through 17.

The general concept is that each Coomababah side plays the Glen Innes side the year above their division.

It is believed that in their top 17 Coomababah has up to eight players moving on to NRL clubs next year.

GATRL co-ordinator Richard Taylor is encouraging the Glen Innes community to come and get behind the local boys.

"It's a really good chance for the community to come and watch some high quality rugby league," Taylor said.

The matches commence tonight with the Glen Innes opens side taking on Coomababah's under 17's at Mead Park.

Games will recommence tomorrow morning at 9:30 at the high school, with the Glen Innes under 14's taking on the Coomababah under 13's.

Following that the Glen Innes under 15's will face off against the Coomababah under 14's.

The final match will be between the Glen Innes under 16's and the Coomababah under 15's.

A presentation and barbecue will follow this, the players will have the opportunity to listen to advice and receive tips on the football from St George Illawarra Dragon and NSW representative Beau Scott.

"There is a really positive atmosphere in the school with all people involved looking forward to the event," Taylor said.

COOMBABAH STARS OF THE FUTURE
The foundation is being laid for a bright future for schoolboy rugby league at Coombabah SHS. At the recent U/13 and U/14 Qld state titles Coombabah SHS had 11 representatives in either the Kookaburras or Stingers teams, of which 5 of these were selected in the Qld team, these included; Dylan Pelo, Dymeric Pelo, Josh Willetts, Jenan Wedderburn-Parrish and Josh Ralf.

These talented individuals played a big part in achieving our goal of having two Coombabah SHS sides in the final of the top 8 south east Queensland competition.

As tradition at Coombabah our up coming tour of northern NSW should provide a great opportunity for these boys and others to press their claims for future inclusion in their respective teams.
STEVE RENOUF CUP SEMI FINAL

UNDER 13’S

The Steve Renouf Cup Semi Final between Coombabah and Wavell began with a shock try conceded by Coombabah early on in the game.

As the team got down to business Aaron Ulai and David Pritchard established the standard for Coombabah for the rest of the game. The score see-sawed throughout the first half as Wavell were a much improved team from our previous meeting. They were well coached, big and challenged us with some very good play.

Strong performances from Albert Tanoai , Sebastian Kolio and Bryaden Barratt in the first half helped us to a half time score of 16-14 to Wavell.

The second half saw the real battle take place as both teams fought for a finals berth. Coombabah stepped up to shut Wavell out in the second half with a respectable defensive effort. Coombabah crossed the line twice grapping two converted tries to come out winners 26-16 in a evenly contested semi final.

Players of Note: Brayden Barratt. Oliver Bridgeman Sebastian Kolio David Pritchard Albert Tanoai, Johnathon Tau and Aaron Ulai.

COOMBABAH SHS 2010 TITANS CHALLENGE CUP WINNERS

Well done to the Coombabah SHS open B team who took out the Titans Challenge Cup with a hard fought 22-20 win over St Michaels.

It was a classic grand final with the game going into to extra time and being won on a penalty goal in the dying seconds.

Man of the match was Natal Tuia.

This wasn’t the only title won by Coombabah this year with the under 13 B side winning the Gold Coast final and will progress well into the greater metropolitan finals.

ANNUAL INTER-STATE LEAGUE MATCH THURSDAY

Rugby league players from the highly credentialed Coombabah High School teams will return to Glen Innes on Thursday to put local players through their paces.

It is the third year in which teams from the Queensland high school have visited and offer the rare opportunity to take on such experienced opposition.

Each of the teams from the school are ranked among Queensland’s best with the under 14s side being one of the top two teams in the state.

Coombabah coach Rodney Pryor said there have been definite benefits from their annual visits to the Glen Innes school.

“It all started because I grew up there (Glen Innes) and it was easy for me to contact the school,” he said.

“It has been successful not just for their rugby league but the camaraderie too.”

On Thursday night the under 16s sides from Glen Innes and Coombabah High Schools will clash at Meade Park from 6pm with the public invited to attend.

The following day three matches will take place on the high school grounds featuring the under 14s, 15s and open sides with matches at 9.30, 10.30 and 11.30.
COOMBABAH SHS VS. KEEBRA

The final score in this game highlighted the problems created by poor decisions and unforced errors.

In a general observation Coombabah was competitive throughout most of this game.

A lack of on field organisation in the attacking zone of Keebra and our damaging error count prevented us from building pressure.

The lesson here is to manage ourselves when we have the ball and prepare seriously for games.

Most boys showed courage getting themselves in front of runners in defence. There are no questions about the team’s determination to compete.

Score at half time was 12-0 and early in the second half 12-10. The boys did well to get back into the game although dropped off as the half went on.

PLAYERS TO NOTE:

Brendan Elliot was dangerous as usual, although not given enough time/space to be more threatening.

Junior Utai aswell, did not receive adequate ball to be effective in this game.

Aaron Ito showed improvement in areas of the game that he knows he must continue to work hard at.

Steve Tolo showed indications of becoming a reliable and very effective kick returner. His speed and evasiveness is good.

Final Score: Keebra 30 – Coomabah 10.
Looking forward to our next effort.

GREAT START BY COOMBABAH

Coombabah State High School started 2009 with very positive by all teams.

This year the school has received great support through the Canberra Raiders, and, in particular, Mr. Paul Bramley, head coach of the 2008 Queensland Cup Premiers, Souths Logan.

Mr. Bramley is assisting the Affiliation by working with all rugby league program participants weekly, and the results have been immediate. ‘The Raiders are certainly keeping a very close eye on a number of students’, Mr. Bramley stated.

The Coombabah High Titans Cup side were outstanding defensively on Monday night against Beaudesert, but with a completion rate of 30% it is very hard to win.

Leading 10-6 with one minute remaining, the toll of a heavy defensive load allowed Beaudesert to score off a grubber, kick and convert to defeat Coombabah 12-10. It certainly was a game the boys have learnt from after a dvd review highlighting their strengths and weaknesses.

Stand out performances on the night were Kris Palmer and Ryan Epa.

U/13’S:

Tuesday night the U/13 team took on Mountain Creek.

The boys performed well, accounting for Mountain Creek 24-8.

While they still have a lot of improvement to go, they are starting to gel as a team and are developing their skills further.

Some of the boys who played well included Josh Willets and Jordan Scott who led the team around well, Jayden Thompson, who scored a very good try of a kick charge down, and Shayde Werahiko, who always took the ball forward.

Well done boys, let’s keep moving forward.

U/14’S:

Tuesday at Runaway Bay was an important day for Coombabah Rugby League.

The U/14 took on the highly fancied Mountain Creek outfit. From the opening whistle it was obvious the Coombabah boys had their minds on the job.

The forwards made good yardage and the backs were able to capitalise with points. The boys played well, playing some constructive, mature football! Herald Pajonoc, Nathan Wilson, Lance Tonga,

Dylan Cooke and Corey Withers all had fine games.

The boys are looking forward to the rest of the season. 36-0.

U/15’S:

On Wednesday night the U/15’s went up to Mountain Creek for the first round of the competition.

They performed well to put themselves in a position to win the game. With minutes to go they had a try disallowed, which would have put them in front. Brendan Elliot was the best performed during the game.

On Wednesday night the Open side, participating in the Andrew Gee Level Two competition came up against their coastal neighbours,. PBC.

From the kick-off Coombabah competed well against the much bigger PBC side, but it wasn’t until midway through the first half on the back of four non-complete sets that PBC scored and converted to go into sheds at half time leading Coombabah 12-6.

The second half witnessed a real arm wrestle with Coombabah hitting the lead with 12 minutes remaining at 22-16, but a try with 5 minutes remaining locked it all up at 22-22.

With a last throw of the dice, Coombabah scored a great try to Jeremiah Niah which was converted by Mitcham Ardler to give Coombabah a well ground out win, 28-22

A solid performance by all boys, with special mention to Captain Glen Marks, Jordan Andrewes and Ben Thompson for their consistent effort for the whole game.

Congratulations to Brendan Elliot on his selection in the South Coast U/15 side, we wish him the best of luck at the State Carnival.

Congratulations to Jordan Andrewes on his selection in the South-West Opens side to contest the State Carnival. Unfortunately, due a broken hand, Jordan could not trial for South Coast, but through recent solid performances gained selection for South-West.

Best of luck at the State Carnival, Jordan.
