The Cronulla Sharks Matthew's & SG Ball squads went through their paces last night in near winter conditions at Endeavour Fields.
Both teams were kept warm by doing lots of running around and fast ball work drills by the both squads. There are only limited training sessions before the break, make the most of them. Good on ya boys, good luck and keep up the good work. |

JUNIOR SHARKS 1st TRAINING SESSION
Story & Photo By :
What a great site to see Endeavour oval with some footy action on it, even if it was just the first training sessions for the Sharks Harold Matthew's & Sg Ball Cup 2009 Train on Squads.
Cronulla Caringbah all rounder Charlie Bates was as usual rushing around helping out here and there, the old chuck - a - saurus is a s reliable as the sun & and must just about live at Endeavour. On ya Charlie.
Over at the Matty's Cup part of the field...
Things look like they were going fine..... all the players started to group and hang with their clubs or school teammates.
That lasted about 6 minutes, then Dave Howlett said, this is a team, we all need to be mates.
The boys paired off with a bloke that they didn't know, as almost half the train on squad won't be used for the '09 season, Dave Howlett told the boys, "look at the bloke next to you, he may not be here when we play"
A very fit looking Shane Walker was in the thick of the training on his first day with the Sharks, "yeah, it's great to be here and really looking forward to being involved with Dave and the team" said Shane.
It worked, players started to train with blokes the only knew from teams that played each week...
SG BALL part of the field :
The boys are back !
The Sharks SG Ball players and staff must be keen to get ready for next season after this years magnificent world beating form which saw the Sharks miss the finals by a game.
They have a few of this years Matthew's Cup side training, Ben, Tubbsy, Sam, Zac, Hass & Brucey were working hard with the battle hardened veterans like Chad Townsend, and Hayden Peacock and the boys.

CHARITY STARTS WITH TWO LEAGUE PLAYERS
Story & Photo By : MICHAEL CARAYANNIS
CRONULLA Sharks' Ben Ross and former St. George Illawarra forward Kirk Reynoldson both showed their softer side through the amount of community work they undertook last season and they've both been nominated to win rugby league's annual One Community's Telstra Ken Stephen Medal this Thursday.
Ross made more than 50 separate appearances, including multiple appearances to the Sylvanvale foundation at Kirrawee which supports people with intellectual disabilities.
He is also an active supporter of the McGrath Foundation, and helped coach De La Salle Caringbah's under-14 side.
``It is really good working with kids,'' Ross said. ``Kids are really grateful and they look up to you and get really excited.
``Rugby league players are really educated now. We know our role in the community and realise how lucky we are.''
In a bid to increase community work, Ross and manager George Mimis are in discussion with the Sharks as he looks at supporting one main charity next year.
Ross wants to raise more than $200,000 next year.
Reynoldson played an important part in helping St George Illawarra launch its Dragons community program.
The now-retired Reynoldson took part in the PCYC-Footy Fever mentoring program at Rockdale PCYC.
Throughout the 10-week course, each Wednesday on his day-off, Reynoldson helped troubled youths develop goals, and taught them to become leaders among their friends.
The medal winner will get $5000, and a $5000 donation will go to the player's charity when the award is announced on Thursday. |
EELS BLOW IT - CRONULLA JUNIORS & SHARKS WIN
Story & Photo By :
Media reports that footy genius Shane Flanagan won't be joining the Parramatta Eels next year is not all that earth shattering news.
In fact it is terrific, that means Shane will most likely also be involved with the Cronulla Junior League through the Development Program planned with the Sharks.
Shane reckons the Eels didn't even talk to him, well that's their bad luck because the kids that had the opportunity to be part of his coaching sessions have the hugest respect of the dynamic Flanagan.
Shane has been a big part of the Sharks success this year and as assistant coach of the mighty NSW Blues will be able to share all that great experience with the local junior league and the Sharks.
Obviously with all his keenness and great footy brain, Shane will get his chance to coach at the top level soon enough.

SHARKS DEVELOPMENT SQUAD NEWS
Story & Photo By :
WHATS HAPPENING WITH NEXT YEARS DEVELOPMENT SQUADS ?
Well it looks like the Junior League voted to get the Sharks and in particular Supa Coach Ricky Stuart involved more in the development of our kids.
There will be Development squads for the Under 14, Under 15's and Under 17's, the Sharks have recieved a list of players in these grades and squad lists will be released on the Sharks website as well as on ourfootyteam.com as soon as all players have been contacted by mail.
Hang on, what about the mighty midgets, yeah, the plan is basically the same as this year.
Once the Under 13's comp gets off and running, selectors from the Junior League and the Sharks will invite a squad of mighty midgets to develop and learn under the guidance of Ricky and his development squad coaching staff.
There most likely will be games of footy for the Development teams again in 2009, possibly not as many they played 2008, but the focus of the development squads will be to develop the skills of the young men to hopefully bring the best out of in them in the years to come.
The 14’s 15’s and 17’s development squads will come together on Monday, November 17 to start their pre-season programs.
Let us know what you think about the Development squads and give us your opinion on what you think should happen. ||
Let’s hope the new structure helps to develop our local kids into NRL stars in the future.
Sweet.
Tomorrow night will welcome next years Harold Matthew's & SG Ball Cup squads, when the boys will have a bit of a get together with thier teammates and coaching staff and their parents get to say hi to each other too. Training begins next week with the Matty's Cup squad training on the Sharks back grounds (Cronulla Caringbah's home ground), the SG BALL at the Toyota Cup sides have movied to a highly improved and bingy free Cronulla High School ground. |

SYDNEY EAST SECONDARY GIRLS TACKLE GALA DAY
Story & Photo By : CRONULLA ARL DEVELOMPMENT
On Tuesday the 21st of October at Todd Park girls from high schools in the Sharks, Dragons, and Souths districts competed in the Sydney East Girls tackle Gala Day.
The games were played with 7 players on the field with 4 reserves under international rules with the safe play code in effect.
In the junior (yr 7 and 8) division due to some late cancellations found only two teams to play off in State of Origin best of 3 series between G.R.C Peakhurst and Kingsgrove.
The first two games both in back and forth battles ended in a draws which brought it down to the third and deciding game. Both teams came out fired up, ready to put on a great game but at the final siren G.R.C Peakhurst came from behind to be the eventual winners.
The seniors (yr 9 and 10) division saw eight teams participate being split into two pools of four where all teams were garranteed a certain three games.
There was a big display of heart from all the girls on the field, not to mention some impressive ball skills and some big hits that some NRL players would be proud of.
The Final came down to Matraville vs Engadine who had had a draw in there pool game earlier, this game was not going to be same this time Matraville proved to be to big and strong.
Congradulations to all the girls that played, they showed that given the chance to play a game they don't often get to the skill of the players proved to a make a very entertaining day of Rugby League.
If your school is interested in participating in this event next year please contact Huw Ellis at sydneyeastsecondary@arldevelopment.com.au |

Mr. Wayne Madden President Cronulla Junior League (Photo's : ourfooty media ) |
WOTS GOING ON IN 2009 ?
The question we all need to know is what is happening with the Cronulla Development teams next year.
Apparently the Junior League and the Sharks are in dispute about who is running the show.
So it looks like there could possibly be 2 development squads, some 15 or so selected players will be in a Sharks Pathways program, these players will not be allowed to play in Development games with their mates.
But the Development games will be going ahead. We will chase this story next week to get the word from Ricky Stuart and Wayne Madden who is the President of the Cronulla Junior League.
So there will be plenty of opportunities for players to work hard towards a great 2009 footy season and challenge yourselves to get into these Development/Pathways squads. Good luck & run@me. (PLEASE NOTE : as of 15/10/08 we haven't followed up this story with the Junior League.) |

Story By : BY MICHAEL CARAYANNIS
FOLLOWING on from invitation-only trials, St George Dragons has announced its train-on squads for next year's S.G. Ball and Harold Matthews season.
The trials held at OKI Jubilee Stadium last month were well-attended, with the bulk of players chosen from St George junior clubs.
Players will start pre-season training on November 10 and complete six weeks of pre-Christmas training, before resuming in early January.
Newly-appointed junior representative manager Neil Lovett said he expected both sides to improve throughout the year.
``Not only is St George embarking on an exciting new page in terms of coaching staff to manage the 2009 junior representative teams,'' Lovett said, ``but St George Illawarra Dragons are introducing an entirely new development concept, called the Dragons High Performance Unit, which will provide a better pathway for the development of our young players through the ranks of St George Illawarra.''
Former St George great Graeme Wynn will coach the under 16 Harold Matthews side, assisted by former Cronulla S.G. Ball coach Mick Marton.
Tony Carson will coach the under 18 S.G. Ball side.
Former St George Illawarra and Wests Tigers player Warren Carney and Ben Haran who used to work with the Melbourne Storm will be among the skills coaches.

JUNIOR REP TRAIN ON SQUADS SELECTED
Congratulations to all the guys that have recieved their letters from the Sharks confirming their selection in next year Harold Matthews & SG Ball Cup's train on squads.
The SG BAll were very unlucky to make the finals in 2008 with a late rush seeing them defeat some of the top team in the last few rounds.
Cronulla's Matty's Cup side started like world beaters but injuries made it a hard season for the Sharks who still had their best season for a few years.
So good luck boys, 2009 will be very exciting with the Shire brimming with local junior talent.. GO SHARKIES !! |
COBRA'S BITE TIGERS
Our visiting friends from the Dubbo EastRidge Cobra's took on the Balmain Tigers Under 13's Development team today at Eastwood and put the venom into the Tigers.
In a tough game of junior rugby league, the Dubbo Eastridge Cobra's defeated the Balmain Tigers 38 - 30 to end up winning what turned out to be a great game of footy.
"The boys put on a blinder today, they really went well" said Cobra's coach John Smead on the phone this morning.
"The boys have really enjoyed this trip to Sydney, we can't wait to get back next year" Mark said from the BBQ the Tigers are putting on for the visiting country boys and their delighted families & friends.
The bus trip back to Dubbo this arvo will be a bit different to the noisy one that beat it's way down the highway just 2 days ago, good luck to everyone at the Dubbo EastRidge Cobra's JRL footy club, we look forward to seeing you again next year. |
On Friday 27 th September the EastRidge Cobra's from the Dubbo Junior League brought their under 13's footy side to the big city for a big adventure and some footy.
Friday night the Dubbo boys where at the Sydney Football Stadium watching Melbourne Storm work their way into this years NRL Grand Final.
The Aquinas Colts JRLFC have put up the squad up at their clubhouse at Menai, this morning they all jumped onto the bus and headed for Cronulla Beach.
There was only one person in the team that had seen a beach before, as soon as the bus pulled up the boys were off, running down the sand like 3 legged greyhounds.
They enjoyed jumping around in the surf for a while before the big game against the Sharks.
Then it was time to play some footy.
The look on the Dubbo boys faces when they ran on Shark Park was fantastic, big eyed, open mouthed amazed kids (and coaching staff too)
Although the Cronulla side won the game with plenty of entertaining rugby league, the visiting Dubbo boys were not disgraced against this highly regarded Sharks Development team.

This is part of the growing development program to give as many talented footballers plenty of opportunity to ameliorate. It's my new word for this week, if you don't know what it means, grab a dictonary.

UNDER 15's MATCH REPORT
Story By : Jordan Dow - Engadine HS
The Engadine boys seemed very confident at kickoff, but in the dressing sheds, we all had in the back of our minds, that this will be a very tough game, and it was a necessity to shut down Reece (Davidson) and Jezza (Jeremy Saville).
Engadine had alot of early ball, and before long, Jaron Sharp found his way to the line.
4 - 0 Engadine up.
Before long Woolooware had turned things around and Engadine found them selves on their heels, defending their line. Woolooware were set 4 a back line, and certain to score.
Until halfback Bryce mistaked Jordan Dow for Reece, and 'Cheeza' raced almost the length of the field to score under the dot.
10 - 0 Engadine.
Woolooware worked there way up the field due to some handling errors from the Enga boys. Some slack defence saw tommy find a hole and to put the ball over the line, just resisting dodgies chase.
10 - 6.Engadine
This saw the Engadine boys under a bit of pressure and were looking for an answer, soon michael lichaa found a way through some scattered defence and scored in the corner.
16 - 6 Engadine. Half time blew.
Again in the second half, Engadine proved dominant, with tommy fry, leading the engadine forward pack, making a man of the match performance. Very early in the half, Aaron Bennett found some tired defence out wide which saw him go half the lenth of the field to score. 22-6 Engadine.
Woolooware found some fight back and scored to make it 22-12. With only about 5 mins to go, michael ducked and dived over to assure Engadine the Mitch Healey Cup shield. Winning in 24 - 12.

DUBBO COLLEGE INTO SEMIS
Story & Photo By :
Dubbo College Senior Campus has progressed to the semi-finals of the University Shield after trouncing Cronulla High 46 - 24 at Apex Oval yesterday.
Despite many of their players still recovering from last weekend’s Group 11 under- 18s grand final, Dubbo pulled together a tidy performance against the Sydney visitors, proving lethal with the ball and unbeatable in defence.
Captain Brodie Chapman opened the scoring after charging through the unorganised Cronulla defence to give his side the early lead.
In total, Dubbo scored eight tries, with Marc Field’s two after coming off the bench one of the features.
Hooker Jeremy ‘Squeak’ Smith was on his kicking game with five conversions while Josh Merritt booted one.
Dubbo dominated the first half and led 30-16 at the break but the margin could well have been much larger had it not been for three Cronulla tries late in the piece.
After coach Craig May had his say at the break, Dubbo came back hard in the second stanza, setting up speedy winger Allan Arnold in the corner to extend their lead and from then on the result was never in doubt.
May said it was a solid win from a side that was short of energy because of sickness and fatigue from the weekend’s game.
“It was a really hard fought win by a group of players who struggled for the most part but got the job done,” May said.
“The first half particularly was fairly scrappy and there were a lot of mistakes and penalties.
“Despite this we did well enough to lead 30 - 16 at halftime and got through the final session without any real dramas.
“There were some good signs for us leading into the semi-final against Sarah Redfern High with Dylan Hill making a successful return from a shoulder problem.
“He took the ball up and with good support from his fellow forwards set up a nice foundation for our halves Brad Spencer and Josh Merritt.”
An added bonus for Dubbo this year has been the emergence of Hill, Spencer and Merritt, all of whom represented Country Rugby League under- 16s. |

DUBBO AT FULL STRENGTH FOR SHIELD
Story BY : ANNA YEO
Dubbo College Senior Campus will have the home ground advantage when they take on Cronulla High today in the quarter final of the University Shield at Apex Oval.
Despite the majority of Dubbo's players still recovering from Saturday night's grand final, coach Craig May is confident his side can perform well.
"At the moment a lot of the boys are still coming down off the high from the grand final so we need to pull ourselves together and focus if we want to come away with the win," May said.
"If we can get our mental attitude right and show up ready to play then we have a better chance of winning."
The Cronulla High side is expected to be a lot smaller than the Chifley College side the boys defeated two weeks ago.
However the side boasts some impressive talent, with four of their players already signed with the Cronulla Sharks SG Ball competition.
"Cronulla High defeated Worilla (South Coast) to progress through and I expect them to have good ball speed and pace around the ruck," May said.
"If we can be on our game across the board then we will give ourselves every chance of winning," he said.
Dubbo College Senior Campus captain Brodie Chapman said he will be lucky to play today's match after struggling with the flu for most of the week.
Chapman said preparation for today's quarterfinal hasn't been the best, but hopes the boys can pull it together in time for the match.
"We didn't have many turn up to training on Tuesday as most of the boys are still recovering from the grand final," Chapman said.
"Hopefully we can pick ourselves up in time to perform well against Cronulla."
Chapman has faith in his side and believes they have the ability to beat Cronulla.
He said he feels quietly confident and believes his front row will take his team forward.
"I think if we can control the ruck and the speed of the game, and not allow them to get a roll on early we should come away with the win," Chapman said.
The match is scheduled to kick off today at 11am.
As of yesterday no changes had been made to Dubbo's line up. |

CRONULLA HS TAKE ON DUBBO COLLEGE
Cronulla High School's University Shield Rugby League team is travelliing up to Dubbo today to play Dubbo College in the Semi Final of the University Plate
The game will be played on the famous Apex Oval in Dubbo where the ARL unvieled an ARL Centenary Plaque a couple weeks ago as part of the Centrnary Celebrations.
The Cronulla High boys should still be pretty fit as some of them have been playing in the finals of the local Cronulla Comp.
Dubbo College has a star studded side with high quality players like Captain Brodie Chapman, Max Ryan & Max Ray, two forwards who like most country boys, take no prisoners & will love the opportunity to belt a few more city boys.
Cronulla will be missing a couple of their better players with people like Aaron Bruce not playing, but Cronulla High have an excellent hooker in Dane Malone an experienced little whiz with the footy. |
MATTYS'S & SG BALL TRIALS
The Cronulla District Rep trials are on in a couple weeks & we encourage all players from Development Squads & local clubs to tryout.
If your footy club has nominated you to trials for either Harold Mathew's or SG Ball Cup squads, it might be a good idea to stay a bit fit.
If you didn't get to play in the finals this year, you may not have played for 3 or 4 weeks.
Everyone will want to give the trials a red hot crack so do your self a favour by being the best you can be and to take the trials very seriously.
Being fit, strong and stretching properly will help you to avoid injuries too.
Good luck boys ! CHECK WWW.SHARKS.COM.AU/ FOR INFO |
