STUART EARMARKS JUNEE TEENAGER FOR BIG THINGS

CRONULLA and Australian rugby league coach Ricky Stuart has earmarked Junee teenager Sam Clune as a potential halfback replacement for Sharks star Brett Kimmorley.

Stuart pored over videos of 17-year-old Clune in action before telling the Sharks to sign the dynamic Riverina football prodigy to a two-year contract.

Sharks recruitment manager, Chris Wilson, yesterday revealed Stuart was a big fan of Clune and would closely monitor the progress of the rookie halfback.

Speaking from Sydney, Wilson said the Sharks coach had shown “a lot of interest” in the exciting Junee talent.

“He’s (Stuart) looking forward to working with Sam,” Wilson said yesterday. “Ricky is always really interested in players who play in the key positions.

“Sam plays six or seven and Ricky played seven.”

A gifted halfback of the late 1980s and 1990s, Stuart did his football homework before recruiting Clune to the Sharks.

“Ricky heard different stories about Sam, so he scanned a video to see for himself,” Wilson said.

The dream deal with Cronulla may give Clune the inside running to get Kimmorley’s coveted halfback spot at the Sharks as early as 2010.

In joining a growing list of young players from the region to rocket to the attention of NRL clubs in recent months, Clune has also followed in the footsteps of Laurie Daley and Adam Perry.

Daley and Perry were Junee juniors who shot to fame with Canberra and Canterbury respectively.

Clune joins Riverina schoolboys Josh Murray, Cameron Woo, Matthew Hands and Cameron Breust on the springboard of an elite league career.

Wilson said Clune’s contract would enable the teenager to complete high school and continue his league development.
“We provide a rugby league education via camps and skill sessions,” Wilson said. “We will closely watch his progress and hopefully he will develop.”

Wilson is adamant Clune is highly rated by the Sharks.

“We’re pretty impressed by Sam and not only by what he can do on the football field,” Wilson said.

“He’s a level headed young bloke and comes from a good family.

“He’s got the right sort of discipline and a really good work ethic.”

The son of John and Denise Clune, Sam will be in the Sharks backyard in 2008 as the family are moving to Wollongong.

SHARKS SIGN YOUNG MAORI SENSATION
LEAGUE - Teen centre Aussie-bound
It takes a powerful rugby league boot to stride the divide between local amateur club rugby league and the professional world of the Cronulla Sharks in Sydney.

Jarom Wihongi-Henare from Tikipunga has made that leap.

After being head-hunted by Sydney talent scouts, who saw him work his magic with the New Zealand Maori under-18 team, the 17-year-old centre or back-rower has signed a prestigious three-year contract with the Sharks.

He leaves this week for a new career in Australia - a big step for a schoolboy from Tikipunga whose success has come faster than he imagined.

"Although my family thought it would come eventually, no one expected it to be quite so soon - it is kind of nerve wracking the whole thing of moving to Australia," he said.

He considers himself fortunate that he will not be making the journey to a new life in a new country alone.

Long-time Northland teammate, Dargaville's Shane Pumipi, left the country on Sunday to begin a similar contract with the Sharks and, like Wihongi, he will live in the apartments owned by the club in Sydney.

The pair will train with the larger Jersey Flegg (under-20) squad but will probably end up playing in the SG Ball under-18 competition.

Wihongi leaves behind large sporting shoes to fill at Tikipunga High School.

He has been a key figure in highly successful teams crossing five codes: volleyball, league, touch, sevens and basketball.

His shift to Australia is a brave move for a boy who has lived his entire life with his family, firstly in Hikurangi and for the last five years in Tikipunga. He has always been close to his family, which includes his four brothers, his sister and his parents.

"Our family would not be as close without our Mormon faith. It is very important to me and has saved me from making a lot of mistakes. I think one of mum's concerns about me going overseas is that I might drift away from my faith. One of the first things I intend doing is to make contact with the church in Sydney," he said.

Jarom sees Tikipunga High School as being a crucial factor in his success.

"I don't think I would be where I am today if I had been at another school. Mr Woods, the head of sport, and another teacher who was there for a while, Brad Miller, were very important. Mr Woods has guided me in many areas of my life not just including sport," he said.

Jarom acknowledges that his first step into the world of professionalism is a large team effort: a mother who believed in him, a father who went to nearly every league game and taxied him and fellow team mates every weekend for three years to games in Auckland, younger brother Kieron, who is an impressive sportsman in his own right, other family members who cheered him on the sidelines, great teachers and great coaches.

There was even one dedicated intermediate teacher, Mrs Wellington.

"She followed my progress through school and went to nearly every game I played. No man, it seems, in terms of sport, is ever truly an island."

JOSH HITS STRAPS WITH CUTTERS

Former State of Origin centre Josh Hannay has been hitting the training paddock with the Cutters and chatting to team sponsors and management.

But the Sharks discard confirmed he isn't ready to lace up for Mackay's new Queensland Cup side anytime soon.

"I've heard the rumours myself but it's not likely I'll be playing for them in the near future," he said yesterday.

Hannay said he was just catching up with old mates and trying to keep fit during the off-season before he leaves for Wales in January.

Linked to Celtic Crusaders for 2008, Hannay said the club was poised to make its way into the Super League in 2009.

But the 100kg three-quarter said he would "love to come back and play for my home team," when the time was right.

Hannay experienced a season of discontent in 2007 after he was unceremoniously dumped by Cronulla after just three games.

After spending months on the outer limits of the NRL with lowly club side Gymea Gorillas, Hannay was offered a contract with the Crusaders, a semi professional outfit coached by John Dixon.

It was a welcome relief for the Moranbah product who believes he still has what it takes to make an impact in rugby league.

"I'm only 27 and still enjoying the game," he said.

"I don't feel like I'm washed up yet.

"It was only a year or so ago that I was playing State of Origin."

And Cutters chairman Greg Sutherland said he would be keeping a close eye on the experienced back.

"We'll be following his movements with interest," he said.

"He's still got plenty to offer, on and off the field."

Back to Cronulla Juniors SHARKS JUNIOR REPS PRESENTED WITH TRAINING SHIRTS

Now it's real, both the LG Cronulla Sharks 2008 SG Ball & Harold Matthews Cup squads have been given their Sharks training shirts to train in.

It is amazing our quickly young men can change a shirt, they ripped off their cool shirts and swapped them for their new Sharks training shirts, well real fast.

They all looked fantastic in their lightly coloured gear too, well done the Sharks (most likely Dean).

Harold Matthews Cup coach Dave Howlett was happy to let Cronulla Sharks head coach Ricky Stuart spend the entire training session with the squad.

Ricky welcomed the boys to the Sharks, he said " you guys are just as important as his 1st grade team".

He then put the squad though learning session that went for about 2 hours.

The Sg Ball squad were doing plenty of running with lots of sprints, it looked like they were having fun.

Both squads are enjoying themselves and are keen to bring on next footy season

GYMEA'S U13S HAVE GOODS

Gymea Technology High School's under-13 rugby league team won the Adam Dykes Shield last month.

The Gymea school went through the tournament undefeated in their six pool games before defeating Woolooware High School 20-18 in a closely contested grand final.

They were coached by former rugby league star Alan Fallah, who played more than 100 first-grade games for Western Suburbs.

Fallah said it was a remarkable effort from his team, considering only three players from the 20-man squad play rugby league on the weekends.

"Being a small school it's hard to be competitive," Fallah said. "Instead of picking a rugby league team we pick athletes."

The tournament is played over two terms with Lucas Heights, Engadine, Port Hacking and Cronulla high schools all featuring in the competition.

The physical education teacher said the students had enjoyed their rugby league experience and predicated that a few future Cronulla Sharks players may be developing.

"The students were dragging me out of the staffroom so we could train at lunch," Fallah said.

"A couple of the boys are big and fast."

PEACHEY TO PLAY 1st GRADE FOR CRONULLA CARINGBAH IN '08

Some great news for Cronulla Caringbah this week as David Peachey agrees to play A grade for us in 2008.

Having retired from a sterling career at the end of 2007, “The Peach” still has footy in his blood!

“Cronulla Caringbah is the Club my sons and my nephews play at and I think of it as my Club” said Peach. “It’s only natural that this is the Club I want to play for”.

David has also agreed to take on an Ambassadorial role for us and will be a valuable asset to the Club off the field, not to mention the spark he will give us on the park.

On another note, Dom Ruello has been appointed A Grade Coach for 2008 and a host of expat players have given an undertaking to turn out for the Black and Whites next year as Cronulla Caringbah attempts to win their first A Grade title since 1978.
Cronulla Caringbah Sharks Junior Rugby League Football ClubCRONULLA CARINGBAH IN JIM BEAM CUP

It’s official! Cronulla Caringbah Sharks Junior Rugby League Football Club has been accepted into the NSWRL Jim Beam Cup Competition for the 2008 Season.

Cronulla Caringbah Sharks will compete against the current clubs in the competition as well as the other new entrant’s, one being a Western Australian team, the Western Reds.

NSWRL are currently under negotiations with Foxtel, to televise the games as they did this year.

The St George Sutherland Shire leader will report on the games throughout the 2008 season.

Local Sutherland Shire radio station 2SSR 99.7FM will also update the team’s progress.

Graeme Bloor, Cronulla Caringbah Sharks President said at the Jim Beam Cup Presentation night on Wednesday 3rd October 2007, that this is a fantastic opportunity for all Rugby League Players in the Shire.

There is now a clear pathway for players to reach the NRL. Cronulla Sutherland Sharks now have a pathway for juniors starting with the Junior Representative sides Mathews Cup and SG Ball.

The players could then go on to make the Sharks National Youth under 20’s team.

If they are over 20, they could then use the Jim Beam Cup and the Premier League pathway to reach their goals. There are one of only a few NRL teams that can boast this complete set up.

Graeme also reiterated that this was not just for the players of Cronulla Caringbah Sharks but all rugby league players in the district.

Graeme said that there has been an enormous amount of work done to get the team into the competition by the Cronulla Caringbah Sharks.

The Cronulla Sutherland Sharks supported the application process, but this was just the start of the hard work. Most clubs that we will be competing against have very large leagues clubs backing them and the cost to compete in this competition is over $250,000.

Graeme said the Cronulla Caringbah Sharks were in need of a major sponsor for the team, they would have the opportunity to display their business name on the playing jumpers as well as other advertising and promotional options.

We are also asking all business’s in the shire to get behind us with their support and sponsorship and if they are interested in this exciting inaugural year to contact Peter Malone at pmalone1@dodo.com.au for an opportunity to discuss sponsorship packages that are on offer.

We also have a 200 club where supporters will become the 200 foundation members receiving a specially designed polo shirt and cap for their donation of $250.00, once again if people are interested they need to contact Peter.

The club has also secured the service of Luke Goodwin to coach the side; Luke is the son of former St George Great Teddy Goodwin.

Luke comes with great experience; Luke played 1st grade rugby league and has coached rep teams for the Sharks.

The club will be holding open trials for the team on the 27th October 2007 from 10am at Toyota Stadium.

Those players interested will need to download a trial form from the Sharks or Cronulla Caringbah website and return it no later than the 24th October 2007 to ensure a trial.

CRONULLA SHARKS JUNIORS NUMBER 1

The Cronulla Sharks Under 14's Development team returned home on Sunday from their NSW Country Tour to Nyngan.

The team arrived in Nyngan late on Thursday afternoon and we got lost in a town with 20 streets.

Col Wright from the Far Western Academy took us to our new home for the next few day.

Our hosts were fantastic, everything was arranged, people from all over the Nyngan district had activities organised which include pigs chasing, motor bike riding and catching a few yabbies.

Col Wright & Ken Fitzgerald had been planning this trip for the past 12 months and it all went off with out a hitch.

On game day ( Saturday ) there were two games on before the much publicised game against the Cronulla Sharks.

From the Kick off the Far Western boys were right into it, they play a tough brand of footy out there and the Cronulla boys got smashed, to their credit, it only took 10 minutes for the young Sharks to regroup and give it back to the Country boys.

De La Salle's Dion Beattie put the Sharkies 1st points on the board with a good try to put the ball down close to the uprights, and the Engadine's Micheal Morris added the 2 points, the Sharks led 6 - 0.

From the kick off the Sharks made plenty of meters, then on the last Man of the Match Reece Davidson (De La Salle) burst through the Academies defence to dive across the line, again Morris converted to make the score 12 - 0.

The Far Western boys put on a couple good moves which saw their winger run to the line only to knock on ingoal.

In the second of three 20 minute stanza's, the Cronulla boys had to work hard to get out of their own half when Ryan Giles (De La Salle) punched through half a dozen defenders to run 55 meters to score, this time it was Brad Ring from the Engadine Dragons who converted and added 2 valuable points.

Stacey Morell from Cronulla Caringbah came on the ground with immediate effect, using his skill and pace to carve havoc in the middle of the paddock with some great runs.

Ryan Giles capitalised went he caught a good little pass from half back Harry Day (Engadine Dragons) to score an untoughed try again under the black dot, Brad King converted and the score blew out to 18 - 0.

The Far Western Academy boys hit straight back when the 5/8 chipped the ball over the Sharks defensive line and regathered to score a fine try which was easily converted. 18 - 6.

The Academy boys were in again when they ran the ball, it got out to the wingers who fought his way to the line with a couple Sharks hanging on.

Rea Pittman from Cronulla Caringbah had a strong game, running hard at the country boys all day.

The Sharks forwards Zac Wedersweiler (De La) & Tom Fry (Cronulla Caringbah) kept running hard desipte the heat and caused some great clashed with the Far West big men.

In the 3rd stanza, the Sharks worked hard to get with in 10 meters of the try line and the Gymea Gorilla's Jack Sommerfield crashed over to make the score 24 - 12.

Andrew Montgomery (De La) was knocked out in the 1st third by a flying right hander then came back with vengence to make good meters later in the game.

Luke Dodge from the Dragons played well as did Menai Roosters forward Alex Bedford, Jackson Clark (De La) was the little general, with Harry Day steered the Sharks well and gave them plenty of opportunities.

The final score was 28 - 14

The Sharks coaching staff were fantastic lead by Steve Hardy & Les Davidson with Wiggy & Luke Phillips (Gymea Gorilla's) made the trip a great experience for all.

“The boys really stuck it to their more fancied opponents and should have score a couple more tries which would have put the pressure on the Sharks, said Steve Easman, Assistant FWAS coach.

“But credit to the Sharks, they defended really well and took the opportunities when they came,” he said.

The Sharks are hoping to invite the far Western Academy team to Cronulla early in the new year to show the Nyngan boys how we do things in the Shire as well as play a game against next years under 14's.

Thanks to Ken Fitzgerald the Sharks Development Secetary, Col Wright the Far West coach and Kathy Barber from the Far Western Academy of Sport for a great weekend.

FAR WESTERN ACADEMY of SPORT RUGBY LEAGUE HOST CRONULLA SHARKS IN NYNGAN

The Far West Academy of Sport has opened up another development link with the Cronulla Sharks.

The Sharks were unable to travel at Easter to the Nyngan Challenge but were true to their word and brought a 14’s side to Nyngan to take on the FWAS junior squad.

In planning their end of year program the Sharks saw this tour as a fantastic opportunity for their boys to learn about the bush and finish off their 2007 season.

The U14’s Cronulla Sharks Junior Development Squad defeated the FWAS side in what was a great game at Larkin Oval on Saturday, 6 October.

The Cronulla side were really tested and won 28 – 12, but the score was not a true reflection of how close the game was.

The Cronulla squad has been staying in Nyngan since Thursday 4th October up at the showground and enjoyed a couple of farm visits on Friday and Saturday morning where they learnt a lot about the bush culture.

“The farm visits have been great, as some of our boys haven’t been past the mountains and the chance to experience and see how a farm operates is an eye opener for them,” said Ken Fitzgerald, Cronulla tour organiser.

There were two curtain raisers to the main game, with Nyngan taking on Brewarrina in U12’s and U14’s.

To enhance to opportunity to see the Cronulla match, players from around the district were invited to play in the teams, with players coming form Cobar, Bourke and Gilgandra.

In the U12’s Nyngan proved too strong beating Brewarrina 30-16, and in the 14’s Nyngan also claimed the victory winning 28 – 8.

The main game was where the Sharks took on the FWAS, which was at times a fiery clash.

The FWAS started really well and were pressuring the Sharks line but couldn’t capitalise on their opportunities.

The Sharks opened the scoring and were never headed for the rest of the match.

The Sharks won 28 – 14, but the score line could have been a lot closer if the FWAS had have held onto the ball for longer and made the most of their opportunities.

Les Davidson, former South Sydney and Cronulla player and Australian representative, was on hand to present the awards of man of the matches to the FWAS team.

Matt Langby, Jordan Hay and Jarrod Tamatea were the three best for the FWAS side.

“The boys really stuck it to their more fancied opponents and should have score a couple more tries which would have put the pressure on the Sharks, said Steve Easman, Assistant FWAS coach.

“But credit to the Sharks, they defended really well and took the opportunities when they came,” he said.

Former Sydney Roosters hardman Steve Hardy, the Sharks coach echoed Steve’s sentiments. echoed Steve’s sentiments.

“That was a really tough game, if not the toughest our boys have played this year, and credit to the FWAS side who really had us under the pump for periods of the game, but our boys dug deep and held on for the win.”

The Cronulla side enjoyed their time so much that they can’t wait to bring their squad out here again next year to both play against the FWAS and experience some of the bush experience.

“We have had a great three days in Nyngan and the people here have been nothing but helpful and very welcoming.

We would like to thank the Nyngan community, especially Col Wright, Head FWAS coach, the Nyngan Junior Rugby League, Trevor Redman for all the work that went into developing the tour.

The Sharks look forward to a visit in 2008 from the FWAS Squad.

On Friday 12th October the academy Open League squad are travelling to Newcastle for a match against the Newcastle Knights 17 years development squad.

This match sees the end of the 2007 FWAS league program.

Trials for 2008 are set down for the 1st & 2nd December in Warren – all players aged 14 to 16 years are welcome to attend the trials... | SEE THE ACTION |

UNDER 14's GET READY TO RIP

Training is getting serious for the Cronlla Sharks Under 14's as they prepare for the NSW Country tour to Nyngan next week.

New comers to the squad Luke Manahan and Alex Belford trained well last night and seemed to fit into the squad quite well.

Alex has a bit a pace which he'll need out at Nyngan.

Training is on again on Monday at 5:00 pm, Sutho oval, this will be the last training session before the boys jump on the bus on Thursday morning at the Sharks Leagues Club. The bus will be departing about 8:00 am.

There is quite a bit of excitment up in Nyngan about this footy tour.

It seems all the local girls have ben checking ourfootyteam and have checked out the boyz. So it could be fun, fun, fun.

NARROW LOSS FOR ST JOSEPHS IN TOMMY BISHOP SHIELD

THE Tommy Bishop Shield competition brought out the best of the St Josephs under-7 side.

The team went throughout the round-robin competition undefeated, but lost narrowly in a tough contest for the finals.

Super side St Clair took out the final honours after keeping every competitor scoreless up until the final. St Joseph were the only team able to score a try against them.

St Josephs coach Jordon Gibbons said he was "ecstatic" with his team's effort.

They finished third overall and gave the best performance for a Sutherland Shire side in several years of competition.

A GRAND FINAL FOR THE TRUE BELIEVERS!

This game had everything. Great play, great drama, energy and excitement to burn and above all else great sportsmanship and skill.

My friend and business partner from Tahiti, Chris O'Callaghan came over to watch the game. Chris is the contest director for the Billabong Pro in Tahiti, friend to most of the worlds top 44 surfers and a rugby league tragic.

He's the only person I know who surfs Teahupoo almost every day and is able to watch live NRL games as well. Now that is living in paradise!

Anyway, Chris said to me after the game it looked to him like De La Salle played with nothing to lose and everything to win.... and win they did!

Cronulla Caringbah came out of the blocks strongly got some good field position.

They got the ball going wide through the hands with a quick offload to Stacey put him into the gap and he used his pace to score about 10 m wide of the posts.

Cameron Paddy used his golden touch with the boot to put it over the black dot again. Sharks 6-0.

De La Salle kicked off but through a some good defence managed to get the ball back in good field position as well.

With their backs sitting very deep they were able to get a good roll on with their backline movements.

They too spread the ball wide down their right flank to a speeding Andrew Montgomery.. Learn More

JUNIOR LEAGUE GRAND FINAL WEEKEND

The Cronulla Sutherland Junior League Grand Finals, for both junior and seniors, will be contested this weekend at Endeavour Fields 1 and 2 and on the main field at Toyota Park.

Beginning with the under-8’s on the outside field at 9.00am on Saturday and culminating with the Open age A Grade, kicking off at 3.00pm on Sunday at Toyota, a total of 23 age groups and divisions will be decided.

Sunday’s schedule on Toyota Park promises to provide a number of exciting matches, with Gymea playing Como in the A Grade Grand Final in the final match of the weekend.

Gymea defeated Como by 14-10 in the major semi to be the first team to advance to the premiership decider, however in beating De La Salle by 38-0 in the final, the Crocodiles will go in as favourites against the Gorillas.

Cronulla Caringbah will be represented in all but the A Grade Grand Final on Sunday, while with their A Reserves playing Kurnell Gymea will be attempting to create some history by winning both senior competitions in the same year.

The A Reserve Grand Final is set down for 3.00pm start on Saturday afternoon.

And in further junior league Grand Final news, the Gymea Under 21’s, competing in a NSW Rugby League Inter-district Competition, play the Grand Final on Friday night. The Gymea 21’s, which also includes players from other local junior league clubs in what is a local representative side of sorts, take on Coogee-Randwick for the title.

That match is to be played at Leichhardt Oval on Friday night, kicking off at 8.30pm.

DE LA SALLE V ENGADINE DRAGONS

The Dragons were fired up from the very beginning of this match but it seemed to take De La Salle a little bit longer to get into stride.
c
Harry Day gets time for a well placed kick in play to get the Engadine Dragons deep in De La Salle's half ( Photo : ourfooty media )

Engadine No.7 Harry Day took a great catch from the De La Salle kick and Engadine put it through the hands.

They broke De La twice in a row and would have scored except for the ever reliable Ryan Giles whose great defence from the outset was an indispensable part of De La’s hard fought victory over the irascible Dragons.

Dragon’s Michael Morris did a great barging run early on to smash through the clutching De La players arms. He continued this type of play right through the game and was instrumental part of a ferocious Dragon’s attack, one of Engadine’s best on the day.

The game see sawed with De La putting on some heavy pressure but Engadine was up to it with desperate defence forcing an uncharacteristic drop ball by Reece Davidson, just when it looked like De La would get across the line.

Suddenly Engadine got the ball wide on the right side and was almost through. Nearer to De La’s line they put up for a beautifully executed bomb that edged past the posts on nice angle, dropped within the in-goal, bounced and wham! Engadine were on the board. The try was converted as well. 6-0 to Engadine.. LEARN MORE

Cronulla - Caringbah Vs De La Salle (1)
& the
ENGADINE DRAGONS Vs AQUINAS COLTS

The thing I enjoy the most about this game was the absolute commitment of both teams.

There was no dirty play as the game was just too fast and physical to get sidetracked by any silly stuff.

The first ten minutes were end to end football with De La probably having a slight advantage with better field position and penalties going there way.

De La made some strong attacks through the middle of the ruck with their big forwards just driving through tackles leaving the Cronulla Caringbah guys scattered on the ground behind them.

But Cronulla Caringbah hung tight with some desperate defence to hold De La out. Learn More

A very entertaining match played in windy, dusty conditions. Such a shame that what was once newly refurbished lawn (NRL) has become such a barren and uninviting playing surface now.

Hopefully, with a well earned rest in the off season and the newly installed recycled water irrigation system, Captain Cook may once again return to its former glory.

For those too young to remember, that means a playing surface covered in grass!

Unfortunately there are many young players around the Shire (and indeed NSW) who probably have no idea what it is like to compete on soft, well grassed playing surfaces.

The De La KNIGHTS certainly put the sword to the dragon today but not before a very tough and arduous battle.

If only the EELS players looked as “hot” in their team shirts as our De La 14A1’s look in their newly acquired sponsored shirts!

Whenever we play Engadine we always know we are in for a tough match and this week was definitely no exception.

The DRAGONS came out breathing fire but De La refused to lie down and weathered the STORM.

A couple of Engadine spectators crowed like ROOSTERS every time a decision went against their team but there were no BLUES during the match as matches between these two teams are always played in the right spirit although I’m still not sure whether the loud spectator standing behind the scorer’s table was calling the referee a moron or a MAROON!

One ill informed spectator even suggested that our club were RAIDERS ! (As we’ve heard so often, some people never let the truth get in the way of a good story!)

Engadine clawed like TIGERS to get back into the match but our guys defended like TITANS so no one could say we played like BUNNIES this week!

Some of our forwards appeared like bucking BRONCOS, forcing the opposition to ride ‘em like COWBOYS, as they continually dragged defenders along for the ride!

We seized opportunities like hungry SEA EAGLES while our defenders constantly attacked as do SHARKS in a feeding frenzy.

We have pace to burn right across the squad and when our backs accelerate you’d swear they were being chased by a pack of ferocious BULLDOGS.

Our winger pounced like a PANTHER in the dying seconds to slam the ball down under the posts. At the end of the day both teams left the former NRL (newly refurbished lawn) as dirty and bloodied WARRIORS, ready to take on the battle of semi-final football next week.

Congratulations to all players on a hugely successful season so far and best of luck during the Final Series.

Chopper Scores another Bosco try (Photo : ourfoty media)
MISSING IN ACTION : Bosco playmaker Chopper was sorely missed by St. John's Bosco against the Sharks (Photo : ourfooty media)
SHARKS VS BOSCO

Surprisingly and despite the score line the Bosco game was pretty good. Bosco were pretty happy with there performance.

They only scored by kicking 2 penalty goals.

But they had there 2 best players out Chuppa in the forwards and Gavin Beatty in the backs, but the rest of the team turned up to play!!.

Strangely, the score seemed a bit unreal when you watched the game as Bosco put on some good attacks and did some bloody good tackles as well.

They had one player sinned bin for a bit of a kick in the gonads ( a bit silly) and needless to say he copped a pizzling in the tackles when he came back on the field.

I suppose Cronulla got the score out so far as a lot of try were under the post so they were able to quickly convert and get back for the kick off.

There was a funny scene near the end when Bosco got the ball back with only seconds to go but they were still trying to score their first try.

The guy who had been sin binned got the ball and almost the whole Cronulla team ran in to tackle him Well at the same time the whole Bosco team ran in to hold him up.

SO it ended up with this guy getting pushed higher into the air, like the scene for Flags of Our Fathers. The ref jumped in the middle for fear of an all in brawl.

In the end both teams were happy with the day and all the guys shook hands and left what happened on the field.

De La Salle U14A (1) Vs Engadine Dragons Rnd 13CRONULLA CARINGBAH U14 A's 2007 MINOR PREMIERS

Congratulation to Cronulla Caringbah U14A's
for finishing as Minor Premiers in the Under 14 A Competition as they thumped poor old Bosco 72 - 4.

In possibly the best game of the season, De La 14a (1) had a much toughter time against the Engadine Dragons at Captian Cook oval.

De La finishing the stronger of the 2 teams in the battle for second place on the ladder & just getting home 14 - 0 against a very well drilled Dragons outfit coached by Corey who has done a fantastic job with this team.

Aquinas Colts put the sword to De La Salle 14a (2) with a good end of season belting, this will do well for the Colts as they will face off against a very powerful Engadine Dragons next week.

We will also see Minor Premiers (for the 2nd time in a row) Cronulla Caringbah face De La Salle (1) in the major Semi, with the winner straight through to this years Grand Final.

Both De La Salle (2) & St. John's Bosco have had tough years in 2007.

Both teams coming up from the B's this year found the going tough in the A grade, as every one who watched the Under 14 A's comp this year knows, both these teams will have learnt & will be better, faster and more competitive footy teams & will be looking forward to another crack in the A's again next year. Well done to all involved at De La & Bosco!!

Holy Family Primary School, MenaiSHARKS OF THE FUTURE DOMINATE SCHOOLS CARNIVAL

Sutherland Shire district schools have enjoyed great success at the NSW All Schools Rugby League Knockout held at the Western Weekender Stadium in St Mary’s this week.

Local primary schools managed to win three of the four 'A' Division knockout competitions and another two claimed High School division titles in an impressive result for local area schools.

The success began in the under-9’s with Holy Family Primary School, Menai, who were dominant in winning their age group, and was capped off the following day with the Engadine High School under-16’s taking out what was an extremely competitive age division.

Holy Family got the ball rolling with a 26-0 win over St Peter and St Paul Primary School from Kiama in the final. Making their victory all the more impressive was the fact that Holy Family went through the entire competition without conceding a try.

In the under-10’s Our Lady Of Fatima were successful in beating Hebersham Primary by 18-16 in the final, while in the 11’s St John Bosco backed up their win in the under 10’s of a year ago, with another victory in this year’s final. They won that match by 30-0 against Hillvue Primary School.

In other Primary School results in the Open B’s final, Loftus were defeated 20-0 by Claymore, while in the Open A’s Engadine were knocked out in the semi finals.

On Tuesday the Shire High School teams also enjoyed successful campaigns, with Endeavour Sports High winning the Under 12’s with a 12-10 victory over Hills Sports High, before Engadine crushed Colyton High School 22-0 in the Under-16’s decider.

The Engadine team contained a number of players already in the Sharks development program including contracted players Chad Townsend and Stuart Mills.

While the Sutherland Shire schools collected five titles overall, no other district was able to win more than one age division.

Engadine powered through the preliminary rounds to qualify for the Grand Final at Western Weekender Stadium.

It was very early in the evening when Engadine took the field agaist Colyton High School.

Colyton looked good coming into the Grand Final and were looking for a good game.

Then the ref blew his whistle and the Engadine boys held position and scored from just about every oportunity.

The final score was excellent as the game was played with two 10 minute halves.

In the under-10’s Our Lady Of Fatima were successful in beating Hebersham Primary by 18-16 in the final, while in the 11’s St John Bosco backed up their win in the under 10’s of a year ago, with a victory in this year’s final.

They won that match by 30-0 against Hillvue Primary School.

In the Open B’s final, Loftus were defeated 20-0 by Claymore, while in the Open A’s Engadine were knocked out in the semi finals.

DE LA SALLE WORK HARD FOR 1ST WIN

De La Salle Under 14 A (2) had their 1st win of the season today at Boys Town oval, but they had to work very hard as a team to achive this.

De La (2) have been improving little things each week between beltings, and it's begining to show in their footy.

"our defence was what got us home today" said a very proud De La coach Stuart Docwra.

Bosco did play De La (1) last week and were smashed all over the park 68 - 0, so there may have had some sore and injured players.

This win moves De La (2) off the bottom of the ladder to and over take both St. John's Bosco & the Gymea Gorilla's. Congatulation to all involved there at De La.

The debate about who is on the top of the Under 14A ladder has been decided today in a fast & furious top of the table clash at Endeavour Oval.

This was the toughtest, fastest game so far this year, with both teams running the ball fast & hard, the defence was outragously tough and everyone on the field played like superhero's.

Cronulla Caringbah came away with the points in the end of the titanic struggle, and this win over a fast finishing De La gives the Sharks the outright lead with 20 competition points, closely followed by De La Salle (1) & the Engadine Dragons, who had their second bye in 3 games both on 18 points, the Aquinas Colts sit in 4th spot with 14 points.

With only 2 game remaining, it looks like the challengers for this years final are there.

All 7 teams have been improving this season which is something all the players, coaches, staff & families can be proud of all the boys playing in this rain interupted footy season. Good luck to all.

CRONULLA CARINGBAH MATCH REPORT U 14A
-vs- De La Salle – Won 14 - 12

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon at De La stadium we all got to see the real 14 A's Cronulla Caringbah team produce their best game of the season so far.

With all the words said by Joe and myself Thursday the week coming up to this game we were able to watch those words turn into action, and I mean action!

You were all awesome in all areas of the field to beat them in the first round 30 to nil.

You matured and respected the opposition to realise that they played poorly in the first game and brought yourselves up the hill to produce a winning performance that your parents saw.

Their little boys turned into young men on the field.

You were hard as rocks and you were never going to give up whatever De La fired at you.

You stood your ground and didn't take a backward step, not once in the game.

As I have said before we are very proud of you all and you are now touching our hearts as only special things do and we will not let you down.

We will get stronger so it's up to you all to give one hundred percent for what ever we do at training.

We are only about seventy percent so move up the hill as our next important game will be a semi final in three weeks, enough time to get fitter and smarter.

The best thing I liked about that game was your second half.

With a lead of 14 to nil and having to run into the wind you protected your tryline and were very smart with the football.

Nothing fancy, just keeping the football for a set if six tackles and treated the football as "THAT"S GOLD" and that was the difference at the end of the game.

Remember defence will win the game but without the football in your hands it may not be enough to win the game.

Thanks to all the supporters and parents for being there for your sons as they need the support of you all and so does this coaching staff as the big picture includes you people.

Be as one and support together and in numbers on and off the field we will achieve all our goals and aim to win the big prize at the top of the hill.

Heads between the goal posts as discipline in the game will be needed to go up the hill with you if we are to be there at the end of this season.

ROUND 10 UNDER 14a's NEWS

Cronulla Caringbah had plenty of the ball at home to trounce a soft De La Salle (2) 54 - 0, who played their worst game of the year & know they can play a lot better.

Engadine fought all the way to the final bell to over come the Gymea Gorilla's 34 - 6, "Gymea just kept coming at us all day", said Dragons coach Corey.

Bosco came against Competition Leaders De La Salle (1) this week and put up a gutsy effort but went down 68 - 0. Looks like Bosco have a player or 2 knocking of the rep's selectors doors.

At half time score was 28 - 0, De La started to spread the ball wide and the pilied on 40 unanswered points which included 4 tries in the second half by the De La right winger.

MATRAVILLE SPORTS TOO GOOD FOR ENDEAVOUR

Mighty Matraville Sports High School won the Elite St. Mary's Cup at Weekender Stadium St. Mary's on Thursday.

Endeavour Coach Mr. Jeff Hardy said "yeah, they are a good side, they had a few of their boys missing today too"

Matraville have now became the new St. Mary's Cup Champions after posting a strong 36 - 24 win over an almost full strength Endeavour Sports High School, who have won this Elite schoolboys competition for the past 3 years.

With a few player to come into the Matraville squad, they will also be strong contenders for the University Shield and why not, the Arrive alive Cup too.

Engadine High School proved too strong in the Buckley Shield yesterday with a convincing 28 - 14 win over a big, tough South Sydney High School side.

Engadine have powered though this Under 14's schoolboys competition by winning the East Sydney Regional Final now progress to the next level where the competition will be a lot faster & toughter.

Engadine HS are arguably one of the best Rugby League Schools in the Shire, they are very well coached by Mr. Steve Holz, ( St. Pat's at Sutho' come very close and we dont include Endeavour in this as they are a Sports High School) and are confident of giving the Finals a fair shake this year.

Then again 13 years old Nick the RAT reckons St. Pat's at Sutherland are the best! It's a free country.

CRONULLA-CARINGBAH KICK 4 KIDS

The under-13’s from the Cronulla Caringbah club managed to raise almost $20,000 for the Starlight Children’s Make-A-Wish Foundation at their annual Kick 4 Kids Charity initiative, held on the back fields adjacent to Toyota Park.

The junior league players braved a strong southerly and a soggy ground to kick goals from 10.00am in the morning until well into the afternoon.

This years Kick 4 Kids takes the total monies raised over the three year history of the event to in excess of $50,000. Kick 4 Kids has supported various children’s charities in the past, with the proceeds from this year to go to the Starlight Foundation.

The event was organised by Dean Gillard of the Cronulla Caringbah club, while the ETU (Electrical Trade Union) and the Law Society, were the major sponsors. VISIT OURFOOTY PHOTO GALLERY

Due to the horrible rainy weather, the powers that be have postponed tonight's much anticipated clash between the Sharks Vs St. George Development teams.

At this stage, according to Under 14's Coach & former State of Origin hero, Les Davidson, the team that was to play tonight will be playing against the Balmain Tigers on Wednesday afternoon at Leichhardt Oval

Sharks vs PanthersJUNIOR SHARKS TAKE ON PANTHERS

On Wednesday the 4 th of July the Cronulla Development Squads traveled to Penrith to play against the Panthers.

The day started with the Under 13's. The Cronulla 13 squad has only been together for a matter of weeks, and although a bit rusty played them selves into the game with some strong defence and some well laid planned moves.

None of the Cronulla kids had only played 1 game of footy for 5 or 6 weeks due the foul weather we have been having and due to the fact that the Sutho' Council doesn't seem to care if the kids play or not.

All 4 development team played very well and the 13's coach Rob said" yeah, they went well, we have only put this team together from scratch so the boys have accounted for themselves extreemly well concidering all the rain and all"

The Sharkies Development Squads take on the might of the St. George Dragons development sides on Monday the 9 th of July.

These games will be at either Sharks Park or Endeavour Oval, depending on where Ricky Stuart trains his side.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS KNOCKOUT WRAP UP

Across 6 divisions 42 teams competed from 18 different schools in this years Sharks primary schools knockout rugby league competition.

The day began with 3 dump trucks and a tractor dropping 200 tonnes of dirt on one of the fields intended to be used for the day which was potentially a disaster.

Lucky for the organisers (and the 10b's division) the toyota park field filled the void and the day was able to go ahead. Through 49 games of big hits, long range tries and freakish talents there were 6 winners from 6 different schools, highlighting the range of talent among footballers in the shire.

Winners aside there were some excellent stories to come out of the day. Woronora heights P.S. & Marton P.S. entered teams for the first time in a number of years.

The return of Sutherland North to make the Open B grand final was excellent to see. But the story of the day has to go to Cronulla P.S. who entered a team in the open B competition.

Cronulla P.S. coach Jeanine Sheppard decided to step up and take the team, with little rugby league experience on her side. Mrs Sheppard entered the team knowing that less than half the team were the correct age for the opens age group. The rest of the team consisted of year 3 and 4 aged students.

They didnt even have jerseys to wear on the day. But with true heart and determination to play the game, Coach Sheppard and her players formed a team that shares an inspiring story, both on the field and in the realms of mateship.

3 training sessions were arranged prior to the day with the ARL development officer which was both a crash course for the players and the coach. Everyone involved had no choice but to listen and learn from the more experienced players in the team (Captain Joseph and hard man Leon).

They picked things up very quickly and started to band together as mates, forming not just a group of players, but a team. Together they started to understand some of the finer points of the game and came up with a starting 13, in position, with 4 ready and willing reserves and a game strategy.

As they ran around in the knockout competition wearing borrowed jerseys that hung below there knee's they played their guts out. After winning their first game 16-0, the boys from Cronulla P.S. were narrowly beaten 14-8 by Sutherland North in their semi final.

Although you may be disappointed with bowing out before the grand final, hold your head up high boys. You were smaller and younger than your opponents but you sure did mix it with them. You're a credit to your school, your mates and your families.

This is a great rugby league story and should be highlighted as one of the main reasons that we are involved in sport.

Congratulations to all teams who were involved on the day. To all the players thankyou for your behaviour and good spirit towards the game. To the teachers thankyou for your organisation and patience. Below are the results of the grand finals -

SCOREBOARD
U/9's - Holy family primary defeated Gymea Bay P.S. U/11's - Bosco primary defeated Gymea Bay P.S.
