Match Report U 14A2’s
12/05/07 Played : De La Salle 14A (2's) Vs Cronulla Caringbah Result : - Lost 60 – Nil
Points : 3) Peter Byron, 2) Blake Aitken, 1) Jacob Ward & Sam Cooper
Well with the score line of 60 to Nil you would think that there is not much to get out of this game, but I like to think that I can always find something positive so here goes. As this is this teams first year in the top grade we are really on a big learning curve & some of the things we are learning are as follows.
1) You cannot compete for 4 out of 6 tackles & expect to challenge the good sides.
2) Now on the bright side is, that if you can do things for 4 tackles a set you can do it for 6. ( get the message )
3) As a team we need to be doing things Smarter, Faster & with less errors than last year. ( & you know we can )
4) We WILL improve a lot more throughout the year than any other team in this grade.
5) You guys are still a classy bunch of young men who I wouldn’t swap for anyone. ( So remember keep your heads up at all times just like I do when I speak about you to anyone that will listen.
So in finishing please keep coming to training as you all do, keep on listening to Al, Craig & myself & you never know we might just shock a few teams along the way. - Stu |

SHARKS, SEA EAGLES POST WINS
Story By :
Cronulla came out firing in the second half of their round nine fixture against the Broncos at Shark Park on Friday night, putting on eight unanswered points to win the match 16-8.
In Friday night's other NRL fixture, competition leaders Manly continued their run of form, downing Parramatta 22-12 at Brookvale Oval.
After a lacklustre start to the match where they just managed to draw level with Brisbane at half-time, the Sharks put the Broncos' defence to the test as they turned up the heat.
The Cronulla attack came up trumps, crossing the line once and slotting a penalty to keep Brisbane in the bottom half of the table.
The Broncos were lucky to keep the second half scoreline to what it was, with their defence constantly being left in the dust as the Sharks launched raid after raid up the middle of the park.
Greg Bird was the lone try scorer after the break, crossing the line in the 55th minute.
Some poor discipline around the ruck from Brisbane then gave up a penalty, which Luke Covell had no trouble with as he secured the extra two points.
The Broncos will need to reassess their game during the week after handing over momentum to the home side late in the first half.
They were unable to turn things around after the break and when captain and playmaker Darren Lockyer left the field in the 57th minute with an ankle injury, the visitors were left unable to answer the Sharks' attack.
The Broncos could have taken a lead into the break, but both of Lockyer's conversion attempts drifted wide of the posts.
At Brookvale, the Sea Eagles had to fight for the win after the Eels went into the break with a four-point lead.
Coach Des Hasler's half-time words must have had some effect on the side with Jamie Lyon, Brett Stewart (2) and Chris Hicks all crossing the line.
Zeb Taia came off the bench and crossed the line late in the game, but it was too little too late for the Eels.
Cronulla Sharks - 16 (F Anderson, G Bird tries; L Covell 2 penalties, 2 conversions)
Brisbane Broncos - 8 (S Michaels, T Carroll tries)
Manly Sea Eagles - 22 (J Lyon, B Stewart 2, C Hicks tries; J Lyon 1 penalty, 2 conversions)
Parramatta Eels - 12 (T Smith, Z Taia tries; L Burt 2 conversions) |
CRONULLA CARINGBAH MATCH REPORT
-vs– De La Salle – Won 30 to nil
Story By : Cronulla Caringbah JRLFC - Photos :
Brutal is a word with action and that was us. You as a football team stuck together and didn't let your team mate down, In numbers you created a defence that no one from De La was going to score a point, even with four sets of six tackles on our line.
You dug deep, deeper than I have seen before, that's confidence in each other.
Your choice to stay positive created the energy that was needed for this E for effort.
With a want to be there your attack was first class and with a hunger to score we all saw six very good tries from a very, very good football team, (heads between the goal post please). we have only started to climb that big hill so don't think that's high enough because you will be three times as good if you keep climbing.
If a development Squad was being picked on that game, all 17 players would have made it for sure!

REF AWARDS A PENALTY TRY
Story & Photo's By
A WHAT ??,
Yep, there was a penalty try awarded in an Under 14's game of Junior Rugby League on Saturday.
Not since the '99 NRL Grand Final had the crowd at Capt. Cook Oval seen a penalty try given by a ref.
Cronulla Cariningbah were ferociously attacking the De La Salles' line after holding out for 23 tackles in a row, when from 9 meters out the Sharks attacked again.
De La Salle went bang, bang, bang, 3 defensive bodies smashed into the tackle, the whistle goes off and before the boys can pick themselves of the ground the Ref is pointing to the spot and awards a Penalty Try.
Apart from the Cronulla Caringbah bench and their families, the crowd were stunned. "not since the '99 (nrl) Grand Final has anyone seen or heard of a penalty try", said Phil, a shocked onlooker.
About 10 minutes later Cronulla Caringbah were awarded another soft try in the corner and even one of the Sharks dads was heard to say "there's no way that's a try"
But lets not take anything away from the way the Sharks ripped the Competition leaders apart.
They were magnificent in defence.
The Sharks had a deadly plan which was simple and it worked.
Close it down at the play-the-ball, this did not allow De La Salle the opportunities to get the ball to their very dangerous back line.
There will be some very sore boys this morning with both teams throwing their bodies on the line for their teams for 2 full halves of footy in this Grand Final replay game at Captain Cook Oval.
In other Under 14A results Gymea had a close & tough win over an improving Aquinas Colts and the another Grand Final replay, De La Salle 14A (2) had a nail biting 14 all draw with St. John's Bosco.

AQUINAS COLTS MATCH REPORT
14a's v's De La Salle at Blaxland Oval
Result : Lost 44 - 0
We played a side that successfully recruited a couple of 'marquee' players from around the district during the off season, producing a formidable opposition.
They certainly got the jump on us as there slick combinations showed the advantage of recent training with the Sharks development squad.
After the success of last week it was a great opportunity for our squad to gauge where we stand at this early stage and what development is required to participate in this years semi's.
|
Aquinas Colts attack (Photo : ourfooty media) |
De La Salle are a good side, they play a disciplined game that revolves around rolling sets of 6 tackles using their size and pace to advantage.
There tactics and speed create space as fatigue kicks in and confidence is dented. De La's objective is to control the ruck by rolling their big guys through the advantage line.
Once this occurs it is very difficult to stem the flow of points as you are continually back peddling.
18 to nil at half time wasn't a true reflection as twice they were gifted tries when we gave them back to back penalties then failed to move off our try line when defending. There big guys fell over the defence to score easy tries.
We were lucky last week when this happened as we had enough points in us to out score the opposition, this week it was a tougher match and De La Salle weren't going to give up any points.
|
De La Salle Winger was dangerous with the ball (Photo : ourfooty media) |
In the second half we competed well early on but faded as our efforts failed to convert into points.
A couple of our kickers must have backed their stocky right winger to score a double on 'Footy Tab'.
Twice we kicked to him leaving a one on one contest with plenty of room to move, ouch that's a coach killer.
Although the score suggests it was one-sided there were many encouraging signs.
A number of players stood out, Liam is warming to his role as a leader, his commitment in defence was exceptional.
Luke Hickey continues to invoke inspiration and is developing a well rounded game that is evolving every week. 'Burkey' excels in mixing it, seeking out opponents to bruise, impressive stuff.
There was some impressive individual skills shown at times by Tyler W, Shaun, Phil and Brett. Tim and Jacob's efforts were also duly noted by Coach Bryce.
We have an excellent foundation from which to make a successful side. We will gain a lot out of this game particularly as we now realise what is required to compete at this level. You need a bruising to identify the areas that are to be improved, adopt a winning attitude, apply the effort at training, support your team mates, then watch the results flow through on game day.
I am sure De La Salle were suitably impressed by the courage and effort shown by our team. |

NSWRL JUNIOR REP'S GO BACK
TO THEIR OWN TEAMS
Story & Photo's by :
With the semi finals of the Harold Matthews & SG Ball Cups played at Campbelltown & Leichhardt Ovals, the rest of the boys played for their local footy clubs.
The injection of Rep players in the Cronulla Caringbah Vs De La Salle game brought the standard of the game up a notch or three.
This was a very physical match with both team throwing bodies around like jaffa's at the movies.
Cronulla Caringbah won a very close game with a try in the final minute of the game.
De La Salle player Jackson (Jacko) Russell said after the game , " we are shattered, we should have won that game" |
ROUND 2 ROCKS & ROLLS
Story & Photo's by :
Defending Premiers Cronulla Caringbah are back to their winning way with a hard fought victory over the Gymea Gorilla's to win their 1st game of the season.
Competition leaders De La Salle Caringbah (1) traveled to Blaxland Oval to run all over the Aquinas Colts defeating an improving Colts team 44 - blot
De La Salle (2) were welcomed to the A's by the Engadine Dragons who were lucky to score a couple of late tries after the scores were locked at 0 - 0 for the 1st 10 minutes of the game.
De La's Coach Stuart said, "we are in the A's now, the boys know they can compete at this level, and give a few of these teams a run for their money this year, Engadine are a strong side and possibly deserved their 36 - 4 win". |

COMO - JANNALI TO LAUNCH CROCODILES
Story By :
COMO-JANNALI, one of Sutherland Shire's most successful junior rugby league clubs, will be re-named Como-Jannali Crocodiles from this Saturday when the club hosts supporters and friends at the Scylla Bay clubhouse.
The club's committee meeting decided on a mascot to celebrate its 60th anniversary this year and adopted the Crocodile.
The area was named when the Italian railway workers from the 1890's likened it to Lake Como in Italy. The old Como Hotel was built on the hill in the 1890s, the only federation hotel in the Sutherland Shire.
Early in 1947 a meeting was held at the Como School of Arts to consider forming a rugby league club.
In the 1950s the tennis courts, picnic grounds and football field were built, with a cycling and walking track connecting Como to Oatley.
On Saturday there will be rides for children and a barbecue starting from 1pm, with Como-Jannali Crocodile players, coaches and officials hoping to meet supporters, new and old, as well as any prospective new players.
Later in 2007 the club will hold a Golden Oldies game to raise money for motor neurone disease. |
SHARKS ‘COACH THE COACHES’ NIGHT A SUCCESS
Story By :
Around 50 local junior league coaches attended a ‘coach the coaches’ presentation at Sharkies Leagues club last night with Ricky Stuart and his NRL coaching team passing on tips and valuable information to the assembled gathering.
The junior league coaches listened intently to Stuart who revealed his coaching philosophies and plans for developing the local junior talent, before Shane Flanagan, Jim Dymock and Craig Wilson assisted with some practical information and conducted some skills and drills training.
The night was a continuation of Stuart’s desire to become actively involved with the local junior players in a bid to give them every opportunity to progress to NRL level with the Sharks.
On Tuesday, May 1 Sharks NRL squad members will visit each and every local junior league club, making themselves known to the local kids and to assist with training. |

SHARKS JUNIOR REP SEASON OVER
Story By :
The season came to an end for the 2007 season for the Cronulla Sharks SG Ball & Harold Matthews Cup squads with both teams ending the season strongly against the highly rated Canterbury Bulldogs.
After the SG Ball match at Shark Park, the Cronulla Junior League & the Cronulla Sharks put on a BBQ for the players and their families, which was also supported by most of the Sharks NRL and Premier League sides.
Cronulla Juniors President Mr. Wayne Madden thanked the 2 teams and their parents for a great year.

If you want to play football, it's all the extra things you do that will count"
Kimorley also reminded the gathered players of club loyality, team loyality and told the boys that the " are the future of the club"

CRONULLA JUNIOR SEASON KICKS OFF
Story & Photo's By :
Today we saw Round 1 kick off in the Cronulla Junior League 2007 footy season.
Out of all the games ourfooty media covered today there were certainly many exciting moments.
Just watching Cronulla Caringbah U 9Bs battle the Engadine Dragons was great because the kids had smiles on their faces as big as the footies they played with.
At Corea Oval the home of the mighty Gymea Gorilla's, the home side took on last years runners up De La Salle Caringbah Under 14A's(1).
|
Members of last years premiership winning Cronulla Caringbah U14A's keep a close eye on the De La Vs Gymea 14A game (spies) |
Although it was the 1st game of the year, De La showed once again they will be there abouts come September.
The De La backs shared the ball and with the forwards fighting their way across the advantage De La scored 50 points to 6 by the time the second half was over.
It's had not to rave about De La's performance (my son plays for them) but the scoreline only showed the tries that were allowed, De La crossed the line on 4 other occasions only to have the Ref's say "held up".
Gymea can find positives from this game too with some hardworking forwards who know how to tackle and with the brilliant Jardan, the backs are capable of scoring a bagful of tries again any team in the comp.
The Gorilla's will not let De La Salle get away with this flogging they recieved today and look forwrd to the re-match in a few weeks. |

‘SPECIAL WIN’: School chums (from left) Abbey Lloyd (captain), Caitlin Mills and Kate Mullaly with their Oztag trophies. |
SCHOOL FRIENDS SHARE WIN
Story By : By DAMIR GOVORCIN
15 April, 2007
Kate Mullaly, Abbey Lloyd and Caitlin Mills, Year 11 students at De La Salle College, Cronulla, were members of the Cronulla girls’ under-16 State representative side which took out the State Oztag Cup competition.
The team won seven matches to go through the tournament undefeated, beating competition favourite St George 5–4 in extra time in the final.
Kate says playing alongside her good friends Abbey and Caitlin made the achievement “even more special”.
“We have been great mates for a long time; we hang out together in and out of school,” she said.
“The tournament was played over one day so by the end of it we were tired but overjoyed.
“Our fitness levels held us in good stead as most of the girls play other sports as well.
“We are looking forward to defending our title next year.”
Kate has played Oztag for six years and says it is the “next best thing” to playing full-contact rugby league.
“You can implement all the skills of rugby league without getting slammed in a tackle,” she said.
“It’s a fun, fast-paced game and I really love being able to play it with my friends.”
Oztag, created in 1993 by former Cronulla and St George halfback Perry Haddock, is a game designed to be the only true non-contact form of rugby league.
What makes it different to others is that a tackle is affected when a strip of cloth attached by Velcro, known as a tag, is removed from the side of a player’s shorts.
In Oztag the attacking team has the advantage (you run at spaces not faces).
This occurs due to the fact that there is more room to move because you have to remove a tag on the side of the shorts instead of tipping anywhere on the body as happens in touch football. The invention of the tag also prevents phantom calls.
All skills are utilised in Oztag. Kicking in general play is allowed but it must be below shoulder height.
Passing also becomes an attacking weapon - if a player is put into a gap, there is a high probability they will make a clean break.
When attacking the line, fancy moves such as around-the-corner passes work well, often making the defender stoop low to remove the tag.
With the game being non-contact an attacker can’t run straight at a defender, but must run at the gaps.
A defender can’t impede the progress of an attacker, so if you try to get a tag and miss you may well be penalised.
Oztag has competitions running all over Australia, with the largest areas located in Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra. |

ROUND 4 SG BALL REPORT SHARKS V ROOSTERS
Story By : Luke Goodwin (Sharks Coach)
The Sharks traveled to Henson Park to take on the Roosters on Saturday. Training had been good all week and they were really up for this game.
The Sharks really knuckled down to their game plan this week and started the game with the 1st try to Christian Coade after only 8 minutes.
Then, went into their usual mid half lapse, giving away silly penalties on late tackles. Laying on the tackled player twice & offside once. This presented the Roosters with good field position which, they didn't have to fight for.
The Roosters took advantage of the Sharks ill discipline and ran in 2 tries to lead 10-4.
The Sharks got back into the game by building pressure by completing their sets of six a capitalizing on the Roosters mistakes. A try off a set piece from the scrum to Christian Coade and then another after 2 repeat sets to Coade giving him a hat-trick before half time. The Sharks went into the break 16-10 in front.
Not sure what was said at half time but after finishing off the 1st half in fine fashion the Sharks started the 2nd half terrible!
Letting in 2 tries in the Roosters first 3 sets of six. To put them ahead 22-16. Just like the first half the Sharks got back into the game by executing all the basics well. They were rewarded mid way though, with a great try off a chip to centre Trent Grubb. This was converted by Takarangi and the game was all tired up at 22-22.
Then the rain started coming down with 6 minutes to go. The Sharks had their chances to put the Roosters away but, could not get over the try line. Then with less than 5 minutes left in the game some crucial errors by the Sharks allowed the Roosters to build some momentum and drop a field goal and take the game 23-22.
The game was therefore the Sharks to win. No team has beaten us this year. We beat ourselves! We are improving a lot every week in patches but need to do it for the whole 70 minutes. We are playing a lot better as a unit but, we are still on 0 points. Just got to get to training and keep at it!
Congratulations to Rob and the Harold Matthews Boys for their 2nd win this year. Keep it going boys!
Next week we are back home taking on the Tigers @ Toyota Park. Thanks. Luke Goodwin

SWSAS DEVELOPMENT SQUAD TRAVEL TO PLAY SHARKS
Story By Mick Rimer (Coach) Photo's by : ourfooty media
In very trying conditions, the Cronulla Under 15's Development team opened their season with a promising 3 try loss to South West Academy.
For a team that has only had 4 training sessions and used 24 players on the day, the result reflected the limited preparation for the game.
Early in the game, both teams defended stoutly, with big hits the order of the day.
After 30 mins the Junior Sharks hit the lead, 4-0,m thanks to some enterprising play from halfback Ryan Dunlop.

JUNIOR SHARKS TO PLAY AT TOYOTA PARK ON SUNDAY
Story By : SHARKS
09/03 The Sharks Matthews Cup and SG Ball teams play round three matches this weekend when they host the Penrith Panthers on Sunday.
The under-16 Matthews Sharks, on the heels of a convincing 42-18 victory over North Sydney last week, will need to produce a similar performance to stop the defending Matthews Cup premiers.
The SG Ball Sharks will be looking to post their first victory of the 2007 season in their match with Penrith, with the under-18 Sharks going down 20-18 last week to North Sydney. With victory in their grasp, the Sharks allowed Norths to score out wide in the dying moments, with the sideline conversion for the win coming after the full time siren.
Also on the agenda for Sunday is an under 15's Development squad match between the South Western Academy team and the Sharks under 15's.
The Development squad match kicks off on Endeavour Field adjacent to Toyota Park at 10.30am, the Matthews Cup will get underway at 12noon, while SG Ball is scheduled to begin at 1.30pm. |

SHARKS Vs BEARS Round 2
CRONULLA BELTED THE NORTH SYDNEY BEARS WITH SOME MIGHTY DEFENCE.
From the first whistle both of these keen young junior rep teams played at 100 kilometers an hour in 30 degrees heat.
Cronulla soon dominated when their defence started pushing the Bears back at times up to 15 meters, it was great footy to watch.
the first half score was 28 - 6 and had the Sharks looking to press their advantage in the second half with their kick - chase game as the Bears seemed to lack speed.
A knock on from 20 mts out from their own line resulted in a bit of biffo which was disappointing because the ref's quickly took control before the forwards could get to the action.
Noth Sydney recieved a penality which the Bears were able to get out to their winger who crossed for his teams second try.
the the Sharks kick-off the Bears fumbled and young Peacock swooped on the footy to run 15 or so meters to score his second try in the corner.
At 3/4 time the score was 32 - 12.
Just after this break the Sharks put on an 80 meter try with the yung winger chipp/chasing to pass the ball to the following support for a good team try.
With only 5 minutes left the Bears second rower showed a clean pair of heels to run straight through the Cronulla defence and with the successful conversions made the final score 42 - 18. |
ROUND 2 HAROLD MATTHEWS CUP V NORTH'S
Harold Mathews Report Sharks vs. North's WON 42 - 18
Story By : Rob Nathan (coach) Photo : ourfooty media
Well what I can I say, the boys rock up today and played an almost error free game. Our completion rate was 80% to North's 20%....It was the 1%'s we focus on throughout the week, every set we pushed off the ball, our grip and carry was good, our lateral vision to tip on was evident throughout the entire game, our get out sets have been the best to date. We still need more intensity when advancing the advantage line but our hit and stick was very sound, players joining the train and driving in every tackle....... Learn More |
ROUND 2 SG BALL V NORTHS
The Sharks hosted the Bears at Toyota Park. LOST 20 - 18
Story By : Sharks
In very hot conditions the Sharks started very well with 2 converted tries. The first to Ben Orcher off a good backline move. Things seemed to be looking up for the young Sharks players after last weeks embarrassing lose to the Eagles @ Brookvale.
Instead of going on with the game after such a good start, the boys got right away from the basics of the game and started to play negative school boy footy. After several turnovers on early tackles and helping the Bears down the field with penalties, the bears scored the 1st of their 3 tries. The Sharks went to the break up 12-6.
The Sharks started off the second half how they finished the first, miss tackles, early turnover of ball, poor options in Defence & Offence, and helped the Bears down the field with more penalties. The bears started to grow a leg and after building all the pressure scored in the corner. They missed the conversion and the Sharks still lead 12-10............... Learn More |

SHARKS VOW NO REPEAT OF LAST YEAR
Story & Photos By : ourfooty media
04/02 CRONULLA-SUTHERLAND SHARKS players Paul Gallen and Ben Pomeroy were at Cronulla Mall on Saturday arvo drumming up support for the seaon opener at Shark Park against the Panthers.
Sydney's new FM Radio station VEGA 95.3FM brought their outside broadcast van to the Southern Sydney Shire to help the Mighty Sharks launch the first of this years NRL season with a home game against the Penrith Panthers on the 17th March at 7:30pm.
It was typically beautiful Cronulla day when Vega FM presenter and Sharks tragic Nathan Hardy invited the two Cronulla Champions for a chat.
Paul Gallen said "that training has been great, our coach (Ricky Stuart) is settling in great too, yeah, Ricky is good, he hasn't got angry with me yet so it's all good. "
Has anything changed at Shark Park this year ? Yeah our whole game structures has changed, our skill levels have improved and training is pretty full on now.
The tackling is more like in a game", Gallen told the crowd of a few hundred enjoying another fantastic Aussie summer day. Gallen also added that the feeling among the boys is very positive. "Everyone is super keen to get out there and redeem ourselves and to definitely put last year behind us."
Ourfooty media asked the boys about the new players in the squad this year and how they are going at training? "they are all going great, Craig Stapleton is good so he should go alright too. We all can't wait to actually play a game of footy." And neither can we! |
VAMPIRE ATTACK IN THE SHIRE
Story & Photos By : ourfooty media
04/02 Paul Gallen and Ben Pomeroy kindly spent time on their day off giving away Sharks merchandise to the 100 or so eager kids and Sharks fans waiting to get their posters, hats and books signed by the NRL stars.
While standing to the side of the line of kids, you couldn't help but notice the chunk missing from Ben Pomeroy's neck.
When the line slowed down a little i asked Ben what happened to his neck, that looks bad Ben, what happened? "Oh Greg Bird bit me".
What do you mean he bit you ? "I dunno, he just bit me". Gee, that's a bit different why did he bite you Ben? "it's the kind of person he is, he is just a low sort of a human being" A bit of a vampire attack then at Shark Park? (laughs)
We are not sure if there will be any more vampire attacks in the Sutherland Shire, but the Sharks want all their supporters to pack Shark Park to the rafters and give the Panthers the welcome they deserve.
