Farrer’s Scott Blanch was selected at fullback for the Greater Western opens after a strong performance at Gilgandra yesterday.
ON THE BURST: NORTH WEST PLAYERS TO LEAD TITLE ASSAULT

NORTH West players will pilot Greater Western’s opens state trial challenge later this month after continuing their reign over Western at Gilgandra yesterday.

The Tim Vaughan-coached North West side were 32-24 victors in yesterday’s trial, collecting their ninth win in 10 years and dominating at the selection table with Farrer’s Scott Blanch, Jake Hawkins, Dominic Horn and Josh Dutton, Glen Innes’ Joel Jackson and Nick Ehsman, Coonabarabran’s Justin Evans and Peel’s Jay Chatfield earning a call-up to the Greater Western side for the state trial carnival at Myuna Bay later this month.

Narrabri’s Sean Russ and Duval’s Blake Keeping were also named as reserves – North West filling 10 of the 17 spots.

It was, however, a day of mixed fortunes for the zone, with the U15s going down in their clash 34-10.

But they did score seven Greater Western selections with Troy Evans, AJ Mylechrane (Coonamble), Ryan Stevens (Warialda), Josh Skaines (Inverell), Jack Pawsey, Jack Broughton (Farrer), and Blake Pawley (Wee Waa) catching selectors’ eyes.

Troy Evans was one of North West’s two try scorers, but there were plenty to go round for the opens with Blanch, Hawkins, Chatfield, Ehsman, Daniel McLennan (Bundarra) and Brett Jarrett (Farrer) all crossing.

Gunnedah’s Kyle Gallen booted the extras for a win that took a come-from-behind effort.

“We came back from 24-16 down with three tries in the last 10-12minutes,” coach Tim Vaughan said.

“Although we did lead for most of the game.”

It was a game, Vaughan said, that they spent the majority of tackling.

“It was one of those games where we couldn’t get hold of the ball for a long time,” he said.

“When we did, we did a lot of good things, although our execution wasn’t that great.”

Still, Vaughan said the boys were very impressive.

“We didn’t have a bad player,” he said, giving his best and fairest medal to dummy half Dutton.

“He tackled very strongly and worked extremely hard.”

“Dominic Horne and Blake Keeping in the front row were also good, and Jay Chatfield when he got the ball in the second half created a bit of havoc.”

The 15s also struggled in the possession stakes, but unlike the opens weren’t able to withstand the weight of possession and after trailing just 10-6 at half-time finished 24-points in arrears of the Westerners.

“They skipped away on us in the second half,” coach Steve Porter said.

“They had a lot of possession.”

Evans was North West’s first half try scorer, with Inverell’s Aaron McNamara kicking the extras and then contributing a second half try.

Porter said despite the limited time in possession and the scoreboard blowing out, his side didn’t give up, and selected Boughton and Pawsey as the standout performers.

He will now coach a big and strong Greater Western side at the state trials on May 26-28, while Vaughan will be in charge of the opens.

“It’s looking pretty strong. It’s a pretty balanced side we’ll take away, there’s a lot of skills there,” he said.

WESTERN SQUADS SELECT COLLEGE TRIO

Three Dubbo College players have been named in Greater Western sides to play in the New South Wales Combined High Schools Carnival to be held at Toronto from May 25-28.

Charly Runciman from Dubbo College Delroy Campus and the Dubbo Senior College duo Max Ray and Brodie Chapman have each been identified as outstanding talents and their selections come as no surprise.

Max and Brodie were last week named in the NSW Country Under-16s side to tour Queensland later in the season after being part of the Western Rams side that went down to Oxley in the final of the Country Championships.

At school level in Toronto, Charly will play fullback in the 15-Years Division side to be coached by former Wellington first grade captain Tony Wilson who is now at Gilgandra High School.

In the Open Division side, Max is one of the props with Brodie as his lock.

The Open side will be coached by Tim Vaughan from Karayuna with Tony Tilburg (Blayney High) his manager.

Meanwhile, the Dubbo and District Junior Rugby League season continues tomorrow with the draw now available.

Computer problems in the league clubhouse prevented the draws getting to the Daily Liberal in time for the Thursday edition.

There will be a full line-up of games at Apex Oval as well as games at Wellington’s Kennard Park, at Warren and at Gilgandra.
Hayden Hodge has been selected in the NSW Country Under 18 side.
Hayden Hodge has been selected in the NSW Country Under 18 side.
NSW COUNTRY HONOUR FOR HAYDEN HODGE

Outside backs Rory Brien and Hayden Hodge have both earned NSW Country under 18s jerseys despite after the completion of the under 18s country championships in Wollongong on Friday night.

Although the Northern Area based Oxley Pioneers won the Country final 32-20 at Wollongong on Friday night, the Rams had five players named in the Country side.

The other Rams in the Country squad are Dubbo pair Brodie Chapman and Max Ray as well as lock Michael Nixon from Orange CYMS.

Brien was chosen as a starting centre for the NSW?Country side while Hodge was named on the bench.

Played at WIN Stadium as a curtain raiser the Country-City Origin clash, Oxley scored seven tries to Western’s four to claim the Tom Nelson Shield.

Rams coach Greg Edwards from Dubbo, said the defeat probably cost hooker Jamie Graham (Parkes) and half-back Scott Rosser (Orange) Country selection.

“If we win, we get more players in the Country side,” Edwards said.

“While I'm delighted that we got five in, it could have been different but wasn't to be. Both Jamie and Scott have played some great football throughout the series but were unlucky.

“Overall thought, I'm proud of the way everyone played in the four games, the discipline and on and off the field was exceptional and they were a credit to their families and their clubs.

“It was all good for them, but just disappointed we didn't get the job done.”

Scores were locked at nil-all until Rams fullback Chris Wilson (Cowra) was sin binned for a professional foul and Oxley Pioneers took full advantage, with centre Ray Marshall (10th minute) claiming the first try.

Rams were quick to respond with Parkes-based skipper Jamie Graham (15th minute) planting the ball down, before Chapman (18th minute) and Dubbo winger Allan Arnold (21st minute) crossed to give the green and whites a handy 16-4 advantage.

Western looked in control until a superb Jason McGrady cut-out pass put winger Jesse McEwan over.

McEwan’s try triggered an Oxley onslaught as the northerners ran in 24 unanswered points with McGrady (40th minute), Kenny Allison (44th minute) finding the line before Marshall (48th minute) McEwan (57th minute) snared their doubles.

Only an off evening with the boot for Oxley goal kicker Matt Nean kept the Rams in the hunt. Trailing 28-16 replacement Ram Cain Henry - from Parkes (63rd minute) gave Western fans some hope of a late Rams revival.

But it wasn’t their night. Half Scott Rosser (Orange) failed to convert from the sideline.

Then Jay Chatfield (65th minute) sealed the deal for Oxley, stretching the lead to an unassailable two converted tries.

Oxley Pioneers 32 (Ray Marshall 2, Jesse McEwan 2, Jason McGrady, Kenny Allison, Jay Chatfield tries; Matt Nean 2 goals) defeated Western Rams 20 (Jamie Graham, Brodie Chapman, Allan Arnold, Cain Henry tries; Scott Rosser 2 goals).

Country under 18s: 1 Matt Nean (Region-Oxley, Club-West Lions Tamworth), 2 Blake Seymour (Region-Southern Stingrays, Club-Bega), 3 Rory Brien (Region-Western, Club-Cowra), 4 Derek Dus (Region-Central Hunter, Club-Woy Woy), 5 Jai Smith (Region-Oxley, Club-Gunnedah), 6 Jason McGrady (Region-Western, Club-Orara Valley), 7 Jake Hawkins (Region-Oxley, Club-West Lions Tamworth), 8 Mitch Fowler (Region-Oxley, Club-Port City Breakers), 9 Josh Dutton (Region-Oxley, Club-North Tamworth), 10 Max Ray (Region-Western, Club-Dubbo CYMS), 11 Brodie Chapman (Region-Western, Club-Dubbo Macquarie), 12 Jay Chatfield (Region-Oxley, Club-West Lions Tamworth), 13 Michael Nixon (Region-Western, Club-Orange CYMS), 14 Jake Finn (Region-Newcastle, Club-Lakes United), 15 Kyle Richens (Region-Bidgee, Club-Young), 16 Blake Hewitt (Region-Bidgee Bulls, Club-Young), 17 Hayden Hodge (Region-Western, Club-Cowra). 3RD PLACE PLAY-OFF
The play-off for third place between Sydney North and Sydney West was another solid game and also played in very good spirit, I have to say that sportsmanship was a big winner on the day all games were played hard and tough but not one incident of bad play was seen, all players are to be congratulated for the sportsmanship that was on display.

Sydney West ran out winner with the final score being 28 to 6 the scorers were;

SW: 28
Tries : Ben Abbot, Sean McGuiness, Anthony Senio & Kali Tui
Goals: Ben Abbott 2 from 2

SN: 6
Tries : Dane Anderson
Goal: Sean Jackson 1 from 1

FINAL FOR FIRST PLACE

The final for first place between Sydney South West and Sydney East was a wonderful game with SSW shooting out to an early lead and going to the break with a lead of 20 to 8.

SE wasn’t finished though and what was said by the coach at half time worked as the boys came out breathing fire and the game was in the balance right to the end.

SSW were only able to cross for one second half converted try while SE ran in four tries and only failed to even the score by one conversion. Sydney South West hung on gamely in the last minute as SE threw the ball around with abandonment in an all out effort to cross the line but the final siren sounded much to the delight of the SSW players.

SSW: 28
Tries : Josh Neale 3, with one each to Jacob Gagan & Aydan Gardner.
Goals: Troy Errington 4 from 5

SE: 26
Tries : Evander Cummins 2 with 1 each to Stacey Morrell, Ekiaki Politoni, & Michael Morris.
Goals: Joey Leatigaga 2 from 4 & Hayden Fepuleai 0/1

A GREAT DAY OF RUGBY LEAGUE

SYDNEY SOUTH WEST V SYDNEY WEST

The 2008 Sydney Rugby League Championships were contested at The Western Weekender Stadium at St Marys before a very acceptable crown for schoolboy league.

The standard of play these days is so superior to that of even ten years ago, it no longer looks like 15 year olds such is the quality of play.

This writer only saw the under 15s games on the day and the first game was between Sydney South West and Sydney West with lots of big, and I mean big hits in defence.

The final score being 30 -14 in favour of SSW but I can assure you the score in no way indicated the closeness of the game, it could have gone either way had SW had not made errors at crucial times such as dropped ball.

It was a very entertaining as were all four games on the day.

SYDNEY EAST V SYDNEY NORTH

In the game between Sydney East and Sydney North we saw another game with monster hits that could almost be felt on the sideline.

The attacking play was most enterprising particularly from SE but North clung on as hard as they could but were not able to prevent the Sydney East team from their scoring spree.

East had a healthy contingent of players from Endeavour Sports who have proven themselves as quality players in every game this writer has seen.

Jake Grace, Tobias Evans, Kyle Baxter, Cameron Clarke, Jamie Graham, (front) Todd Graham and Lou Goodwin.

STUDENTS SELECTED FOR SOUTHERN COUNTRY

Red Bend Catholic College, long renowned as a breeding ground for young rugby league talent, has had 10 players selected to play in the prestigious Southern Country Catholic Colleges side and 13 in the Western Catholic Schools side.

Late last term, Red Bend Catholic College hosted selection trials for the Western Catholic Schools side.

Six under 15s college footballers were selected for Western from these trials and seven in the under 18s.

Cameron Clarke, Todd Graham, Kyle Baxter, Tobias Evans, Jarrod Nicholson and Joseph Gunn are the Red Bend representatives in the under 15s, while Cameron Miller, Luke Goodall, Jamie Graham, Jack Hall, Jake Grace, Lou Goodwin and Kye Redfern were selected to represent Western Catholic Schools in the under 18s.

On Monday, these students undertook the next round of trials against a strong Wollongong side at Cootamundra.

Red Bend sent a team of 13 hopefuls and from these 10 young footballers will represent Southern Country Catholic Colleges.

In the under 15s, Cameron Clarke, Todd Graham, Kyle Baxter, Joseph Gunn and Tobias Evans gained selection.

In the under 18s, Jamie Graham, Jake Grace, Luke Goodall, Jack Hall and Lou Goodwin will represent the side.

Gaining selection in the Southern Catholic Colleges side is a significant achievement. The zone represents catholic schools from across much of NSW and many past players have gone on to bigger and better things.

The selected students will now move to trials for the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges to be held in Bass Hill on May 23 and 24..NSW CCCLEARN MORE ABOUT NSW CCC NSW CCC
