Broncos Thoroughbred Pre-Season ChallengeJUNIOR DIGGERS FALL SHORT WITH LATE COMEBACK

On Friday night the Pura Milk Ipswich Junior Diggers Under 16 team played Brisbane White in the first round of the Broncos Thoroughbred Pre-Season Challenge.

Brisbane White came out with all guns blazing and had shot to a 22- 6 lead at half-time. The Diggers after settling down set about righting the score. They showed the tenacious, never give up mentality that has been the hallmark of Ipswich teams over the decades.

With 5 minutes to go the Diggers were behind 28 - 22 and were coming over the top of the tiring Brisbane side. Only a late intercept by Brisbane in the last two minutes stopped the surging Ipswich side.

Coach Rod Hill, said that he was pleased with the hit out and the second half showed that Ipswich has the ability to be competitive with all sides in the competition.

Final score Pura Milk Ipswich Junior Diggers 22 - Brisbane White 32.

ROUND 1 RESULTS OF BBT DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGE

THERE were mixed emotions in the Greater Brisbane camp following Round 1 of the Brisbane Broncos Thoroughbreds Development Challenge held over the weekend.

The three Greater Brisbane sides in the Under 16 competition all had reasonably comfortable away wins, while the Under 18s didn't fare so well, failing to notch up a victory in their three matches.

The Greater Brisbane Black and White sides got the ball rolling on Friday night in the Under 16 Challenge, beating Gold Coast and Ipswich respectively.

The Black side never looked troubled in their 26-4 win, while the Whites denied the fast-finishing Ipswich to run out 32-22 victors.

Greater Brisbane Red completed the trifecta on Saturday with a comprehensive 42-4 win over South West, which included a hat-trick to Aaron Whitchurch.

Brisbane Red Under 16 coach Paul Cronk said despite the lop-sided scoreline, his team still had things to work on ahead of this Friday's match.

"We were pretty dominant in defence but our completion rate in the first half was 5 out of 14, which just isn't good enough."

"We were better in the second half but we'll be working on completing our sets and on our structure at training. We've got a very hard match this week and we'll need to be more aggressive," Mr Cronk said.

It was a completely different story for the Brisbane sides in the Under 18 competition however, with Brisbane White being defeated 28-14 in a hard-fought contest against Ipswich on Friday night.

At the Gold Coast, Greater Brisbane Black was simultaneously going down to the hosts 41 points to 4 in a very sloppy performance.

Brisbane Black Under 18 coach Mick Clarke admitted it was a terrible showing by his side, but said he expects his side to get better in the coming weeks.

"We had no combinations because we'd only had one, 40-minute training run together so I have no doubts we'll do a lot better this week with a few training runs under our belt."

"We didn't look too bad with the footy in hand but our defence was shocking, but having said that I think Gold Coast was pretty awesome and are the team to beat in this comp," Mr Clarke said.

In another disappointing result, Brisbane Red was run-down by South West 28-24 after leading 18-6 at half time during their match at Virginia on Saturday.

This weekend sees the first intra-Brisbane matches of the challenge, with the White sides tackling the Red sides on Friday night at Carina in both the Under 16s and Under 18s.

Elsewhere on Friday night, Brisbane Black will play host to Ipswich, while South West will face Gold Coast in the Toowoomba Valleys on Saturday afternoon.
