Development Reoprt Brisbane Junior Rugby League
by Paul Dyer
Thursday September 15, 2005
ARL Development Brisbane BroncosOne month is certainly a long time in Rugby League.
This week eight teams will compete for one of the closest NRL final series on record, with sides like the Roosters, Bulldogs and Panthers missing. Who will win? Well your guess is as good as mine.
I do know that here at the Broncos silence is sometimes the best answer.  Sure, we may not have been winning much over the last few months but all the staff and players are doing very little talking and plenty of hard work.
If last week's performance gives us any indication of how we will go in the finals, then things are looking good.
The team competed very well down in Sydney and Brisbane, minus the experience of three key players and with other players carrying some minor injuries.
I’m sure that by the way we have been playing and the return of the great Darren Lockyer, we will see a Broncos victory and maybe the kick start we need to advance to the big game in October.

I would like to start this month’s report by congratulating all teams who competed in Broncos Challenge competitions throughout Queensland.
These school based competitions are a great avenue to keep Rugby League alive in some areas and are something that we are very proud of at the Broncos.
Of course these competitions never become a reality without the support of sponsors and a big thank you must also go to these people.  Below are the winning schools for several of these competitions;

July and August have seen the Development team visit several areas across Queensland including, Hervey Bay, Mackay, Bundaberg and Emerald.
In each of these areas clinics were conducted for children as well as several promotional visits to businesses in these towns.
A big thank you must go to everyone who continues to support Rugby League in these areas as it was very pleasing to actually see the numbers of children playing at schools and clubs across the state.

In other news a team of six including, Peter Nolan, Michael Hancock, Paul Green, Andrew Gee, Ivan Henjak and Paul Dyer ventured across the seas to New Zealand.
The team spent two days in Wellington coaching senior students from schools across the area.  Sessions were based at Wainuiomata High School, home of the great Bill Sharpe.
Bill continues to keep Rugby League alive in the area and his passion for the game is amazing.
A special mention must go to Bill’s lovely wife Elizabeth for the kind hospitality she displayed whilst we stayed in Wellington, the food was amazing!

The team then flew to Christchurch, for the National Rugby League carnival based at QE11 Stadium.
A coaching session was conducted with each of the teams that participated and there was certainly plenty of talent on display.
Congratulations must go to John Rangihuna, who heads up Rugby League at Aranui High School, John coordinated the competition and did a great job.

The development team will visit Cairns, Lismore and Karratha in coming weeks, so stay tuned…..

Remember ‘When you lose, don’t lose the lesson’

That’s all folks! Paul ‘Rock’ Dyer
