Cronulla Sutherland Leader
COMO-JANNALI, one of Sutherland Shire's most successful junior rugby league clubs, will be re-named Como-Jannali Crocodiles from this Saturday when the club hosts supporters and friends at the Scylla Bay clubhouse.

The club's committee meeting decided on a mascot to celebrate its 60th anniversary this year and adopted the Crocodile.

The area was named when the Italian railway workers from the 1890's likened it to Lake Como in Italy. The old Como Hotel was built on the hill in the 1890s, the only federation hotel in the Sutherland Shire.. Learn More

Jeremy Safi
Jeremy Safi's long list of sports achievements include a Junior Sports Star nomination.
KICKING HIS WAY TO THE TOP
Canterbury Bankstown Express
LOOK out Brad Fittler - Jeremy Safi is on track to achieve his sporting dreams of playing halfback for the Sydney Roosters first grade side.

And if that doesn't work out for the youngster, he's got plenty of other options up his sleeve.

At just 11 years of age and already playing over five sports at a representative level, Jeremy, from Milperra, is this week's Canterbury-Bankstown Express Junior Sports Star nominee.

With an obvious love and desire to succeed in both team and individual sports, Jeremy said his favourite sport was rugby league because he thrived on the challenge it presented each week.

``There are many challenges involved in rugby league especially for a halfback,'' he said.

``I love being halfback because I am able to control the game, set up plays and set up tries. I'm also the team kicker.''

Also a soccer star, the young sportsman said that winning both the Best and Fairest award and the Player of the Year award with his local team, Revesby Workers Club, was an amazing feeling.

``Winning those awards felt so great,'' he said. ``I couldn't believe it at first and I was in shock.''

Jeremy said that getting involved in other sports such as tee ball, athletics, swimming and golf are primarily for fitness and just pure enjoyment.

With every day of the week occupied with sport, it is difficult to imagine Jeremy fitting anything else in his routine.

But the up and coming star is also a high achiever academically scoring the position of school captain at Milperra Public School this year and working hard in maths and English class especially to prepare for high school next year.

His career aspirations, however, clearly lie with sport and he is doing everything in his power to be either a famous footballer or soccer player.

``I give it everything I've got every time I play. I'm good at kicking, passing, I've got speed, and I'm a good thinker on the field I've just got sport inside me,'' he said.

``I would love to achieve first for any rugby league team but I would love it even more being a Rooster that would be Heaven,'' he said.

And with qualities such as sportsmanship and teamwork, maybe he will be the man to prove that there is hope for the Sydney Roosters after Brad Fittler.
SUCCESS LIES WITHIN TEAMWORK: ARMITAGE
Dubbo Daiy Liberal
Group 11 under-18s coach James Armitage has stressed the importance of performing well as a team for players to be successful.

The juniors meet Group 10 under-18s in the Western Division trial match at Apex Oval today at 1pm.

Armitage said a repeat of last year's win would be required to fill the majority of spots in the Western Division team.

"I have told the boys that the way to put themselves in with the best chance of Western selection is to be on the right side of the score line," he said.

"All the boys are keen and our preparation has been good."

Armitage said the Friday evening/Saturday morning training in Dubbo was an effective way to prepare and used Thursday evening in Parkes to further oil his under-18s juggernaut.

"The weekend camp was a good concept," Armitage said.

"It's difficult pulling a side together in such a short time but even two or three sessions are important to get the players on the same wavelength."

Interestingly, just four of the nine Group 11 clubs are represented, including seven from Armitage's home town of Parkes.

Macquarie has no one in the side despite defeating CYMS, who have four, in the trial game watched by selectors.

"We have a fairly young side with a number who can play again next year," Armitage said.

"We got around to every team at least once and the core came from three sides, which could well be a reflection on how the competition will go.

"There were a few names from other clubs but a lot of players were picked on their performances in the trials and no one from Macquarie particularly stood out."

Western Division under-18s won the Country Rugby League Divisional Championships 22-20 against North Coast last year and this year's squad will be under pressure to perform equally.

On the other hand, the division has inherited the legacy of a strong record in recent years and with that a revered reputation from the other divisions.

Group 11 under 18s: 1 Brad Marks (Dubbo CYMS), 2 Elroy Samuels (Parkes), 3 Alex McMillan (Forbes), 4 Isaac Dargan (Parkes), 5 Doug Peckham (Narromine), 6 Mark Kilby (Narromine), 7 Michael James Hodge (Forbes), 8 Jack Medlyn (Parkes), 9 Jamie Graham (Parkes), 10 Jake Josephs (Dubbo CYMS), 11 Brad Graham (Parkes), 12 Reece Large (Dubbo CYMS), 13 Zac Merritt (Forbes).

Interchange: 14 Ben Josephs (Dubbo CYMS), 15 Liam Ryan (Parkes), 16 Tom Wilson (Narromine), 17 Danny Read (Parkes).

BROTHERS READY FOR BATTLE
Dubbo Daiy Liberal
Brothers Ben and Jake Josephs live and breathe rugby league and this Saturday afternoon they will be striving for new heights together.

It will be the biggest test to date for both players as they line up for the Group 11 under-18s and press for Western Division selection in the trial against Group 10 at Apex Oval.

Jake, 16 and in his first season of under-18s, will start in the front row while Ben, 17, will come off the bench.

The younger of the two, Jake recently returned from a rugby league training camp at the Australian Institute of Sport. He revealed a competitive rivalry that exists between he and Ben.

"There has always been a bit of stiff competition between us in the backyard," he said.

"I am constantly trying to get the edge over him."

He was also quick to stick up for his brother and indicated that they both had something to prove on Saturday.

"Ben was unlucky not to be picked in the Group 11 side last year and I know that's motivation for him to have a big game," Jake said.

"My aim is to make it to the next level and fingers crossed I can do that against Group 10."

Group 11 has the pressure of defending last year's title at home. But the players chosen for the Western Division under-18s will face the added task of backing up last year's Country Rugby League Divisional Championship grand final win against North Coast.

Both Ben and Jake have already been named in the Western Area Combined High Schools team to play North West on May 2.

Ben is in Year 12 but is also completing a 12-month development officer traineeship with Country Rugby League. Jake is in Year 11. Both are signed on two-year scholarships with the St George Dragons.

Last year their roles in the forward pack for Dubbo Senior Campus played a major part in the school's progression to the semi-finals of the University Shield.

Jake acknowledged that this year they would be senior players in a competition that the school holds a lot of pride in.

"While we were lucky to have the likes of John Gray and Kurt Beahan last year, we had a young team and most of us are there again," he said.

"We were disappointed that we lost the first round of the Arrive Alive Cup last month but we pride ourselves on the University Shield."

The Josephs won't be the only family combination on the field for Group 11 under-18s kicking off at 1pm with highly rated Parkes duo Jamie and Brad Graham also in the forwards.

Bankstown Bulls JRLFCDUO THRIVES ON RIVALRY
Canterbury Bankstown Express
FIRST it was the legendary Johns brothers. Now the Khoury brothers are poised to explode on to the rugby league scene.

Jamesray and Joshua Khoury of Punchbowl are this week's Canterbury-Bankstown Express Junior Sports Star nominees.

Both play in the under-13s A-squad for the Bankstown Bulls rugby league team, Jamesray at fullback and Joshua at five-eighth and halfback.

Jamesray, 13, won a grand final two years ago with the Bankstown Bulls and has played in the school and regional representative squads for Lewisham and St George.

A fan of Sydney Roosters star Anthony Minichello, Jamesray tried to emulate his hero with 14 tries, three goals and 68 tackles in just 18 games.

In the first game of the season, he scored and incredible six tries.

``I like being with a team and playing with all my friends,'' he said. ``I would love to play in the NRL one day.''

For the past few years, he has juggled his league commitments with soccer, winning a grand final last year in the under-13s A-squad for Inter Lions as a goal keeper letting in just eight goals all season.

The team went on to place third in the State Champion of Champions.

Joshua, 11, has won two grand finals for the Concord Burwood United Wolves in the Balmain league competition, and last year captained the winning team in the under-11s grand final for the Bankstown Bulls.

He has also played in representative teams in the inter-schools, regional and city teams.

Joshua said he most admires Bulldog halfback Brent Sherwin.

Joshua scored six tries and five goals and made 83 tackles last season.

Their mother Carol said: ``There is a rivalry between them because they are brothers but it is friendly because they are on the same team''.

2007 EASTER BLUES CAMP
NSWRL Academy
72 boys arrived on Tuesday for the Annual 4 day Easter Camp. During the 4 day camp players from New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and even as far as New Zealand participated in an energetic program which successfully promoted skill development and sportsmanship.

During their stay, the boys also enjoyed a variety of recreational activities including ropes, canoeing, and kayaking.

A special visit the Easter Show was held on Thursday where the boys had the opportunity to meet some of the top NRL Players from their favourite teams. For some, this was their first time at the show so it was definitely a highlight of the camp!

Special congratulations should go to the 4 players who were selected to act as Ball Boys for the 2nd State of Origin at Telstra Stadium on 13th June 2007 - Jack Lowe, Jacob Morrison, Cameron McInnes & Charlie Runcinman.

JUNIOR BEARS ON SHOW AT BEAR PARK

12/04/07 This weekend the Bears will hit the road in three different directions. Premier League will head south to Canberra, Jersey Flegg will go west to Campbelltown and the North Sydney Juniors will again head to Bear Park.

On show at North Sydney Oval will be some of the great talents of the North Shore. Try scoring sensation Mosese Vaka will again feature on the wing in SG Ball while a back line shuffle will feature talented and exciting players such as Ashley Calvert-Evers, Curtis Johnston, Brad Horder, Josh Cass and Casey Faets. Forwards Brad Lupi, Nick Vescio and Josh Nicholls remain in the starting line up. In the Harold Matts Jason Lombardo returns to captain the team as the Bears look to forward Alex Thompson for another hard hitting performance. No doubt this will be a chance to see some of Rugby Leagues’ stars of the future.

Premier League has lost Joe Galuvao, Jaiman Lowe and Yillen Gordon to the Rabbitohs first grade side due to the injury of Paul Mellor and the shock loss of David Kidwell. Reece Simmonds, Stuart Webb and Dave Wynyard move into the starting line up with Valu Nasio making his first appearance via the bench. Canberra are expected to field a strong side against the Bears. Meanwhile the Jersey Flegg return from a bye and will be eager to face Wests at Campbelltown.

Coach Barry Brimelow was forced to employ the services of three under-16 players for the tournament, but even their enthusiasm could not prevent Bundaberg from playing whipping boy to the South Burnett and Sunshine Coast.

With only 15 players fit enough to take to the field in the final match, Bundaberg rallied together to produce their first win of the two-day competition, defeating Fraser Coast 38-16.

Brimelow was disappointed with the outcome of the weekend, but was proud of his players’ courage.

Bundaberg’s under-15 side fared better at the contest, just missing out on a grand final berth after winning two of its four matches.

BALMAIN Jersey Flegg mentor James Shepherd (pictured) has been appointed coach of the NSW U/17 representative rugby league squad for 2007.

Shepherd will coach the Junior Blues in their annual interstate clash with Queensland on June 13 in a curtain raiser to the second State of Origin fixture at Telstra Stadium.

James has coached the Balmain Flegg Cup side for the past four seasons - guiding the U/20 cubs to the finals on each occasion.

An outstanding junior five eighth, Shepherd was a product of Holy Cross College Ryde where he represented the Australian Schoolboys and Rhinos club in Balmain Junior League.

James skippered the Tigers’ Harold Matthews and S.G Ball Ball teams and represented NSW and Australian Youth sides before carving out a grade career at Eastern Suburbs, North Sydney and Ryde-Eastwood.

A teacher at Kogarah Marist Brothers, Shepherd is one of the bright young coaches on the NSWRL coaching scene.

Balmain’s super fit Wally Carpenter has been appointed trainer of the Junior Blues squad.

At the end of the day 560 players competed in ages from 7 years to Open Secondary in front of a very large crowd, probably the largest for some years. This was a great effort from these schools with some of these players never having played rugby League before.

Quirindi entered a 14 years team, which is good see them compete again.

However, Singleton Public and Singleton Heights being the only schools in the Singleton area to enter any teams.

Merriwa Central made a welcomed return to the Carnival with their 10 years running out eventual winners. St Brigids of Branxton competed for the first time now that Greta/Branxton Colts are a part of Group 21. The number of players was around the same as the previous year.

This year the Carnival clashed with the junior cricket grand finals which meant that some schools could not field open primary sides.

Next year consideration is being given to have this Carnival on a Sunday.

During the day 43 teams competed in some closely contested games. An under 8 years game between Denman and Merriwa finished in a draw and was decided on a count back on the first try scorer.

The Finals were also very close and some entertaining football was played. With the “Safe Play Code” in place it makes the game more attractive to young players as well as parents being able to see the safety side of football.

The Carnival was a huge success with each player getting his or her pie and drink. This is still one of the very few Carnivals that offer no entry fee, a free lunch and an opportunity to play a sport in school teams.

This would not be possible if it wasn’t for the way in which this Carnival is organised.

Debbie Watts and her team of workers in the canteen go a long way to make this possible. They put in a huge effort and all should feel proud of the work they did.

Chris Brennan (CRL Development Officer) and Geoff Todd (CRL Regional Manager) were delighted with the number of students who had played on the day. They were also pleased with how smooth a Carnival of this size can run when all parties come together for the same cause.

This is a Thiess Services Group 21 Senior League event and is organised with the assistance of Scone Junior League Club, who receive no financial benefit from the day. However, if it wasn’t for the assistance of other organisations, such as Scone Senior League, Scone Rugby Union Club the event would not be possible.

Thanks to the First Aid officers on the day and the countless people who helped set up the grounds and take the gear down.

The time keepers/ground managers were also a big part of this day in keeping the games on time. Thanks to Henry Page and Sue Rowland who gave their time freely.

The referees on the day, Adam Cook, Corey Stafford, Mick Bowd, Darren Ward, Evan Bridge, Sean Spear, Matt McLean and Paul Tudor, also gave their time freely and had a huge work load to get through and should be proud of themselves for their efforts.

Thanks to Lawrence Hardware Mitre 10 for their donation of raffle prizes and of course who could overlook the time and effort from carnival convenor Rod Bowd to ensured that all things were attended too in a o’clock work precision

GROUP 4 OFF TO GOOD START WITH JUNIOR TRIALS VICTORIES
Northern Daily Leader logo
GROUP 4 got what promises to be a huge season off to a good start on the junior front with trial wins over Groups 2 and 19 on Sunday.

The group hosted the visiting sides at Tamworth Minor League Park for trials in an early warm-up for the Country Championships that will come to Tamworth for the first time this year.

G4's under 13s, 14s and 15s all took to the field and impressed. The under 15s had a fight on their hands against G19 but went on to win 32-16.

"It was a hard, tough battle," G4 15s manager Greg Sharman said.

"We've got five or six new players.

"We've got some big kids but we've got some small ones too. There's no in-betweeners."

Nathan Whale scored two tries while Ryan Pooley, Cameron Rodgers, Daniel Sharman, Nathan Joliffe, Chad McDonald and Bruce Murphy scored tries for G4.

"Chad McDonald stood out and Daniel Sharman defence-wise," Sharman said.

"One of the new kids, Jayden Hampton, was excellent and Kerrod Orcher played well.

"Nathan Jolliffe made a big effort as always. He puts in 100 per cent every game.

"In defence Toby Noble made some crunching tackles."

The Mick Schmiedel-coached under 13s and Paul Upfield's under 14s also performed well.

The sides have a few more trials to go.

"We play again on the 29th at Muswellbrook," Sharman said.

"We'll play Newcastle, Maitland and Group 21. Then we've got another six weeks or more until the Country Championships so we'll have to try and get a couple of trials before then."

Tamworth hosts the under 13s, 14s, 15s and 16s Country Championships in June.

Sharks vs Steelers

Alan Piper, the coach of the Illawarra Harold Mathews Cup side wanted his boys to go back to a very basic game.

"We need to be very basic today, our plan is to get field position and play of the back of that."

The first half of the game was a good battle with both sides making smmall errors, the half time score was 4 - 12 with the locals trailing.

The first half was dominated by the Steelers with young 14 year old redheaded forward Jake Marketo smashing the Sharks pack running the ball a couple time ever set of 6 and finished the game with a great 20 meter try.

After the game Illawarra coach Alan Piper was pleased, "we completed 88%, which was our target.

"But the second half we choose some poor options and made far too many mistakes."

"But I'm happy with the win"

Cameron White had a fantastic 2006, winning the grand fianl with the Tamworth Bears followed by an Australian schoolboys jumper.
The Club, after one of the most successful seasons in its 96 year history in 2006, is struggling to field an under 16 side in this years competition.

Bears spokesman, Gary Chillingworth, said this was a first for the club as there had never been a problem fielding 4 sides in recent years.

"Its hard to fathom, we have two very experienced Coaches in Brad McManus and Ben Surtees, both current first graders with stacks of rep. honors and plenty of experience, the club is known for the exemplary way it looks after its junior players and we have improved our faclities enormously in recent years."

"We have tried pretty much everything to encourage junior players and have a very strong under 18 outfit but are very concerned about the shortage of under 16 players."

Any young players interested are invited to the clubs training sessions, Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at 5 pm at the clubs home ground, Jack Woolaston Oval, or they can contact Pat Crowe on 0428890770

In other results over the weekend, the Panthers were too strong for the Magpies out at Western Weekender Stadium, whilst the Rabbitohs defeated St George 18 – 12.

Illawarra moved itself into the eight with a 28 – 10 win over competition newcomers, Western Sydney, whilst Manly defeated the Central Coast Storm 22 – 8 at Brookvale.

Cronulla-Sutherland were too strong for the Roosters out at Toyota Park, winning 42 – 20, whilst the Knights defeated fellow regional city, Canberra, 38 – 10.
INDIGENOUS U/16'S TRIAL HEATS UP

Rarely does a 16-year-old get the chance to play Rugby League for his state at a world-class venue such as Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, but that dream is in reach for a batch of young Indigenous players taking part in a three-day development camp at the NSW Rugby League Academy in Narrabeen.

The 28-strong group – including seven Queenslanders – will spend the next two days doing their best to impress head trainer and former Manly premiership winning player Ron Gibbs for a spot in NSW’s squad of 17 to play Queensland in the Australian Rugby League’s annual Under-16 Indigenous match on March 30 in Brisbane.

The match, to be played as a curtain-raiser to the Brisbane Broncos versus Penrith Panthers NRL clash, will double as a selection trial for an Indigenous Australian side which will play a New Zealand Maori side prior to the Bundaberg Anzac Test between Australia and New Zealand on April 20.

So while the pressure will be on come March 30 in Brisbane, this weekend’s camp will be equally important considering there remains eight players unavailable due to their commitments with NSWRL Harold Matthew teams which are now into their regular season.

“We didn’t want to bring the Harold Matthews kids into camp because we get to see them play each week – the kids that are here are from country areas throughout NSW and Queensland, and a lot of them haven’t got the chance to play in the usual Aboriginal Knock-out competitions – which we often base our selections on,” NSWRL Academy development officer and camp co-ordinator Steve Hall said.

QLD CLEAN UP UNDER 16's STATE OF ORIGIN 27/11 Queensland have topped of a great year of junior rugby this year by defeating NSW Kurri's Under 16's at Telstra Stadium on Saturday night.

Queensland rugby league teams have cleaned up the representitive season. the Queenslanders have won just about every rugby league competition in Australia, starting with the Primary School National Champ's this year, they won the High School rugby League Tournements, the under 17's and under 18's had sweet victories over their southern enemies, then comes Darren Lockyer and his bunch of stampeading Broncos who as we all remember won the NRL Grand Final after coming from behind to steal the State of Origin from NSW.

If not for Endeavour Sports who aschived a record third Arrive alive Cup Championship this year, NSW would have won nothing. Even the AAC Grand Final was close and ESHS won in the fianl few minutes of that game against an excellent Queensland Keebra Park High School. (source : ourfooty media)

Future Stars Promise Another Thriller Friday, November 24, 2006 - Saturday night promises another thrilling cliff hanger at Aussie Stadium as two great rivals go head to head in the last game of the season, and this is before the Test match kicks off!

The NSW Kooris will meet the Queensland Murris in game 3 of the Indigenous under 16’s series.

The Kooris may have won the first two games of the series but the Queenslanders have promised a big third game after the disappointment at Suncorp Stadium in game 2.

NSW Kooris captain and prop forward Matt Mundine crashed over in dying seconds to snatch a remarkable victory considering the Queensland Murris led 22-10 with just 15 minutes to go.

Mundine, the Arrive alive Cup player of the year, had come back onto the field after suffering a hip injury to capitalise on the work by halfback Neenan Simpson to get the NSW side back in the game. Mundine is signed to St.George Illawarra, Simpson is a part of the Bulldogs Harold Matthews team. In its 4th year, the series is co-funded by the NSW,

Queensland and Federal Governments and National Aboriginal Sports Corporation Australia (NASCA).

The Hon. Reba Meagher, MP - Minister for Community Services, Minister for Youth, Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, and Minister Assisting the Premier on CitizenshipToday NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Youth Reba Meagher handed over a cheque to Kangaroos forward Sam Thaiday and NSW five eighth Albert Kelly to fund the ARL’s Under-16 Indigenous series.

Ms Meagher, who handed over a cheque for $25,000, said the series could uncover another superstar such as current South Sydney player Yileen ‘Buddy’ Gordon.

The NSW Kooris will look to sweep the series over the Queensland Murris in Saturday night’s curtain raiser to the Gillette Tri Nations final at Aussie Stadium. (Source : NRL)

NSW Vs QLD U16's NSW GO TWO UP IN UNDER 16's SERIES 21/11 A TRY out wide in the final minute gave New South Wales Indigenous Under 16 a gut-wrenching 24-22 win over their Queensland counterparts at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday.

In the third game between the sides this year, Queensland Indigenous Under 16 led 22-10 with 14 minutes to go before conceding three straight tries.

The highly entertaining curtain-raiser to the Gillette Tri Nations match brought thunderous hits and plenty of ad lib play. Twice in the final stages when Queensland defended its line desperately, monster prop Don Chambers ironed out the opposition unceremoniously.

Theeran Pearson-YeatmanIndeed the ferocity with which his shoulders met attackers had the burgeoning crowd worrying for the welfare of his victims. Yet there was no need to pity New South Wales, brilliantly led by their own hulk in Matt Mundine and proving themselves every bit as skilful.. Learn More
