TOP OF THE TABLE BEARS DEFEAT WENTWORTHVILLE
Story & Photo By Steve LITTLE Nth SYD Bears
The Bears remain undefeated in the NSW Cup after defeating the Wentworthville Magpies in the dying seconds of their match at Ringrose Park on Sunday.
The ending, a mirror image to the finish of last years Grand Final had Parramatta’s NSW Cup team Wenty in front 20-18 with 6 minutes left on the clock.
“We were still in the game in the last 20 seconds because of the work we had done in the first 20 minutes [of the second half] with our repeat sets” said Coach Wayne Lambkin. “We did not always score off our sets but we kept building pressure and kept making them make tackles which eventually tired them out”.
It was a high quality, physical game of footy, the match was played at a mighty fast pace. Wentworthville took a 6-nil lead when their prop Broderick Wright scored. Norths then leveled 14 minutes in after Ben Rogers chipped and regathered and put Greg Nichols on his way to score and convert his own try. The Bears then withstood a sustained attack on our own line by the tenacious Magpies but withstood the test!
Norths were in an attacking position again with 17 minutes left in the half when a loose pass was thrown on the last tackle… North’s 2006 SG Ball Player of the Year, Mitch Williams picked up the ball and chipped over the defense, and showed Terry Lamb like tenacity to get the ball and pass out to Yileen Gordon to score. Greg Nichols converted putting the Bears in front 12-6.
With 11 minutes left to the half Wenty kicked into the corner and the ball came loose allowing a try and a 12-all score line. However Wenty took an 18-12 lead going into halftime when Justin Horo barged over under the posts.
There was no score for the first 20 minutes of the second half before one of the most sensational finishes to a match in any grade.
Luke Grant threw a nicely judged pass to Jaiman Lowe who managed to power through to score. Greg Nichols’ conversion locked the score at 18-all.
Norths had a mountain of possession but couldn’t break through again. Wenty were putting some pressure on the Bears, and forced a line-drop out with 6-minutes to go. Norths kicked it out on the full giving Wenty a penalty in front, for them to take a 20-18 lead.
Norths had the majority of possession again for the remaining minutes but Wenty put up a battle royale in defense. In the end it was a Charlie Herekotukutuku grubber kick into the right corner with 3 seconds remaining that secured a win. Wenty were unable to secure the ball and Nathanael Barnes scored. Greg Nichols converted to put the icing on the cake and the 2 points on the ladder 24-20.
The Bears are now 3 points ahead of their nearest rival at the top of the table – the Newtown Jets. The maturity, control and confidence in the team at the moment is exceptional. Even though Wentworthville held the lead for most of the match, as in past weeks there was a sense of destiny that the Bears would wear them down and take the points. The South Sydney connection of Jaiman Lowe and Ben Rogers is having a real impact on those around them, leading by word and action in all that they do.
NORTH SYDNEY 24 (Greg Nichols, Yilleen Gordon, Jaiman Lowe, Nathanael Barnes tries; Greg Nichols 4 goals from 4) defeated WENTWORTHVILLE 20 (4 tries, 2 goals from 4). Halftime: Wentworthville 18-12.
Another positive from the weekend was the performance of our Harold Matthews team to down the new boys on the block, South West Academy by 48 points to 12. This team has been threatening to do this all season, and it was a great reward to the players for all the work and persistence that they have put in.
NORTH SYDNEY 48 (Luke Keary 2, Bevan De Vries 2, Jeremy Carruthers, Jefferson Afele, Eddy El-Zbaidieh, Aidan Carney, Sajedul Islam tries; Jeremy Carruthers 4, Sajedul Islam, Shane Brown goals) defeated SOUTH WEST SYDNEY 12.
The action is on again this Saturday 19th of April, the main game V Newtown at 4.30pm with the winner enhancing their chance at securing the Frank Hyde Shield for 2008. The Harold Matthews and SG Ball will also be playing on the day v Manly, commencing at 1.20pm and 2.45pm respectively.
There will be a tribute to the late great Frank Hyde and all are invited back to the North Sydney Bowling Club for post game briefing following the conclusion of the NSW Cup, don't miss it! |
