NORTH SYDNEY SECURE FRANK HYDE SHIELD

Finally! The Frank Hyde Memorial Shield finds a home north of the harbour after the Bears satisfied all expectations on Saturday with a 46-12 win over the Jets in front of a strong 2500 crowd at Henson Park.

For Coach Wayne Lambkin it was a day when his team appeared to tick all the boxes challenging the Jets ‘best in the comp’ defensive record.

“I thought the effort was great” claimed the satisfied coach of the Bears. “We saw on review of the DVD from their last game that was the way to play them and I was so pleased as a coach that they went out and did it and were successful. The way we wanted to play was the right way to do it. We practiced for it and we got the result we wanted. It was an unexpected score line and I don’t think the result showed how tough the game really was.”

Ryan Verlinden was a late withdrawal due to injury replaced by Sean Dalton in the second row, while Valu Nasio was a welcome return to the bench from a knee injury.

The Bears were under early pressure from the Jets but once on the attack Jeremy Smith took control, feeding the ball to centre Shaune Corrigan to find power house Shannon Hegarty who barged over in the left corner and lead 4-0.

Soon after Yileen ‘Buddy’ Gordon broke the Jets ranks to pass to Nathanael Barnes who flew down the right flank to score in the corner. Greg Nichols converted for a 10-0 lead.

NSW rep Charlie Herekotukutuku broke through and drew the defense to the right of field. A smart pass to Jeremy Smith saw him lob the ball 40 metres left across field to a perfectly placed Shannon Hegarty to score in the left corner for a 14-0 score.

Finally Greg Nichols got the pill to Shannon Hegarty. Running down the left sideline Shannon kicked to Charlie who showed typical brilliance to grubber kick and regather to score left of the post. Greg converted as the buzzer went and the Bears went to the break 20-0 in front.

As the second half began, returning forward Valu Nasio scored his first try of the season in the right corner after good lead up work from Shaune Corrigan and the lead grew to 24-0.

Shaune was then rewarded for setting up the last try with a try of his own. After Jeremy began a movement to the right of field Valu got the last touch before passing to Shaune to score in the left corner and make it 28-0.

But the Newtown drought broke as Sean Rudder scored. This was followed up by a try to their captain Jimmy Anderson bringing the score to 28-12.

However the Bears backline began to run rampant with four successive tries in the last quarter.

Shannon Hegarty scored directly from dummy half to the left of the posts with an old fashion barge to the line to bring up his hat trick 32-12.

Dean Widders then showed a bit of individual brilliance by starting a movement down the left of field and backing up to finish off and score. With Greg Nichols injured Beau Falloon was successful with the conversion 38-12.

An opportunistic Buddy Gordon then seized on the loose ball and barged over left of the posts to score a well deserved four pointer, 42-12.

Finally a well deserved try to hard running and hard working forward Luke Grant barging over under the posts not only gave Norths an 11th win but access to the coveted Frank Hyde Shield.

“They [Newtown] have had the least number of points scored against them”. “To score 40 odd points against them is a great effort” claimed a proud Wayne Lambkin. “I thought our tight forwards and second rowers were running some good lines around the middle of the field and were drawing defenders in. Then the halves were just playing footy on the edges and finding space.”

Yilleen Gordon was awarded with the Players Player Award. “Outstanding effort!” Said Wayne. “As I said after the game nothing beats a footballer. He is a very gifted player with most of the skills of the game that is needed as a successful player. I’m happy to have him in my team, but I think as a young man he destined to be playing in an NRL team in the NRL”.

Making a final appearance in the sheds to lead off the victory song five-eighth Ben Rogers has been released Souths to the Dragons.

“Benny’s been tremendous for us while he’s been back playing for Norths he was one of the first players to come back from Souths last year and was very disappointed. But over time he’s turned that around. He’s seen the great job that Norths people do to keep the Club alive and he has helped us out immensely with his game. As a player I’ve coached Ben at Penrith and I’ve known him for a long time so I always felt that I had a relationship with Benny where by I could get some good footy out of him. So a big thanks and good luck to Benny.”

NORTH SYDNEY 46 (Shannon Hegarty 3, Nathanael Barnes, Charlie Herekotukutuku, Valu Nasio, Shaune Corrigan, Dean Widders, Yileen Gordon, Luke Grant tries; Greg Nichols 2, Beau Falloon goals) defeated NEWTOWN 12 (2 tries, 2 goals). Halftime: North Sydney 20-0.
The Bears journey to the finals continues next weekend as they face Balmain Ryde-Eastwood in round 11 of the NSW Cup on Saturday 21st June at 3:00pm on Leichhardt Oval.

TOP OF THE TABLE BEARS DEFEAT WENTWORTHVILLE

The Bears remain undefeated in the NSW Cup after defeating the Wentworthville Magpies in the dying seconds of their match at Ringrose Park on Sunday.

The ending, a mirror image to the finish of last years Grand Final had Parramatta’s NSW Cup team Wenty in front 20-18 with 6 minutes left on the clock.

“We were still in the game in the last 20 seconds because of the work we had done in the first 20 minutes [of the second half] with our repeat sets” said Coach Wayne Lambkin. “We did not always score off our sets but we kept building pressure and kept making them make tackles which eventually tired them out”.

It was a high quality, physical game of footy, the match was played at a mighty fast pace. Wentworthville took a 6-nil lead when their prop Broderick Wright scored. Norths then leveled 14 minutes in after Ben Rogers chipped and regathered and put Greg Nichols on his way to score and convert his own try. The Bears then withstood a sustained attack on our own line by the tenacious Magpies but withstood the test!

Norths were in an attacking position again with 17 minutes left in the half when a loose pass was thrown on the last tackle… North’s 2006 SG Ball Player of the Year, Mitch Williams picked up the ball and chipped over the defense, and showed Terry Lamb like tenacity to get the ball and pass out to Yileen Gordon to score. Greg Nichols converted putting the Bears in front 12-6.

With 11 minutes left to the half Wenty kicked into the corner and the ball came loose allowing a try and a 12-all score line. However Wenty took an 18-12 lead going into halftime when Justin Horo barged over under the posts.

There was no score for the first 20 minutes of the second half before one of the most sensational finishes to a match in any grade.

Luke Grant threw a nicely judged pass to Jaiman Lowe who managed to power through to score. Greg Nichols’ conversion locked the score at 18-all.

Norths had a mountain of possession but couldn’t break through again. Wenty were putting some pressure on the Bears, and forced a line-drop out with 6-minutes to go. Norths kicked it out on the full giving Wenty a penalty in front, for them to take a 20-18 lead.

Norths had the majority of possession again for the remaining minutes but Wenty put up a battle royale in defense. In the end it was a Charlie Herekotukutuku grubber kick into the right corner with 3 seconds remaining that secured a win. Wenty were unable to secure the ball and Nathanael Barnes scored. Greg Nichols converted to put the icing on the cake and the 2 points on the ladder 24-20.

The Bears are now 3 points ahead of their nearest rival at the top of the table – the Newtown Jets. The maturity, control and confidence in the team at the moment is exceptional. Even though Wentworthville held the lead for most of the match, as in past weeks there was a sense of destiny that the Bears would wear them down and take the points. The South Sydney connection of Jaiman Lowe and Ben Rogers is having a real impact on those around them, leading by word and action in all that they do.

NORTH SYDNEY 24 (Greg Nichols, Yilleen Gordon, Jaiman Lowe, Nathanael Barnes tries; Greg Nichols 4 goals from 4) defeated WENTWORTHVILLE 20 (4 tries, 2 goals from 4). Halftime: Wentworthville 18-12.

Another positive from the weekend was the performance of our Harold Matthews team to down the new boys on the block, South West Academy by 48 points to 12. This team has been threatening to do this all season, and it was a great reward to the players for all the work and persistence that they have put in.

NORTH SYDNEY 48 (Luke Keary 2, Bevan De Vries 2, Jeremy Carruthers, Jefferson Afele, Eddy El-Zbaidieh, Aidan Carney, Sajedul Islam tries; Jeremy Carruthers 4, Sajedul Islam, Shane Brown goals) defeated SOUTH WEST SYDNEY 12.

The action is on again this Saturday 19th of April, the main game V Newtown at 4.30pm with the winner enhancing their chance at securing the Frank Hyde Shield for 2008. The Harold Matthews and SG Ball will also be playing on the day v Manly, commencing at 1.20pm and 2.45pm respectively.

There will be a tribute to the late great Frank Hyde and all are invited back to the North Sydney Bowling Club for post game briefing following the conclusion of the NSW Cup, don't miss it!

BEARS ON SHOW AT CENTENARY FAN DAY

The North Sydney Bears have fired the starting gun on their Centenary celebrations with a well supported display at the Harvey Norman Fan Day on Saturday.

Right slam dunk in the middle of stalls from fellow foundation clubs Newtown, Balmain & Western Suburbs and all 16 NRL clubs, the stall received a sizeable patronage over a 5 hour period.

Draped in red & black by supporters Ros Dare and Ken McLoughlin, the stall featured information on the Club including up coming matches and membership information, as well as the sale of raffle tickets for a Bears supporters pack - the lucky winner being Brendan Junge.

Fans from all clubs were also asked to pledge their support for a Bears NRL franchise by signing a petition throughout the day.

Special Thanks to volunteers Ros Dare, Ken McLoughlin, Matt Girvan and Curtis Johnston for manning the stall.

The Bears next Centenary event will be the marking of the Club’s inaugural meeting which occurred on 7th February 1908. This event is to be held this Thursday the 7th of February in the Mount Street Mall in the heart of North Sydney. This location is only a grubber kick away from the original North Sydney School of Arts, where a public meeting initiated the birth of the Bears and North Sydney Mayor and ex Bears Captain Jason Taylor will be on hand to pay their respects.

“It’s an important event for the North Sydney Club and for the history of Rugby League in this country” claims North Sydney Legend & General Manager Greg Florimo.

“Together with our fellow foundation Clubs our founding fathers paved the way for what is now the dominant sport on the East Coast of Australia. It’s a tribute to the spirit and dedication of the people that have contributed to the Club over the past 100 years.”

The following Sunday the Bears will throw open the gates of North Sydney Oval to fans in a free open birthday bash, that will also give fans a chance to have a game of tag footy with some of the great legends of the past such as Jason Taylor, Les Kiss, David Fairleigh, Michael Buettner, Matt Seers, Josh Stuart, Mark Cannon, Gavin Jones, David Peachey and Greg Florimo.

“The old Bears crew are fired up” says Flo. “It’s been a while for some of the boys so match day nerves could unsettle them – you never can tell. We are also opening up the change sheds to the public with a historic display and there will be plenty of other activities on the day to satisfy the biggest Bear’s appetite”.

Check the Bears website http://www.northsydneybears.com.au for more details about your chance to play tag with the legends.

Entry on Sunday at North Sydney Oval will be free with the festivities to start at 11am, and finish at around 3pm.

UPDATE ON PLAYER RECRUITMENT FOR 2008

Prior to the Christmas break the Bears Harold Matthews and SG Ball squads played a heroic 3 games in as many weeks, in order to finalise teams for 2008.

Both squads trained 3 nights per week leading up to the games, working on skills and conditioning. The tough part now is for the coaches to reduce the 45-50 players down to 20-23, with some tough decisions looming.

The commitment and effort of these young players to make the grade has been outstanding.

They travel from far and wide to attend training, converging from all areas to Bicentennial Reserve, Willoughby, some on the bus, some on the train and some on foot.

The Club is proud that these young men believe in our systems and are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to be a part of it.

Premier League were also full swing into training prior to the break, with a squad of around 20 players sweating it out 5 times per week.

The Club is mindful of South Sydney's player roster, and players who so far are contracted to the Bears for 2008 are:

Shaune Corrigan (centre from The Entrance, scored 3 tries in the Jim Beam Cup Grand Final)
Isaac Gordon (outside back, looking to fill the very big boots of David Peachey)
Martin Field (2007 Bears Jersey Flegg)
Arnold Mano (2007 Bears Premier League)
Dave Wynyard (2007 Bears Premier League)
Greg Nichols (2007 Bears Premier League)
Ryan Verlinden (2007 Bears Premier League)
Valu Nasio (2007 Bears Premier League)
Bladen Baird (2007 Bears Premier League)
Curtis Johnston (2007 Bears SG Ball)

Those players currently on a train on basis are:

Charlie Herekotukutuku (2007 Mounties JB Cup)
Richard Retimana (2007 Gordon Rugby, 2006 Bears Premier League)
Sean Dalton (2007 Manly Premier League)
Nathan McKay (2007 Bears Jersey Flegg)
Mitch Williams (2007 Bears Jersey Flegg)
