Sam Clune on his way to another try |
STUART EARMARKS JUNEE TEENAGER FOR BIG THINGS
CRONULLA and Australian rugby league coach Ricky Stuart has earmarked Junee teenager Sam Clune as a potential halfback replacement for Sharks star Brett Kimmorley.
Stuart pored over videos of 17-year-old Clune in action before telling the Sharks to sign the dynamic Riverina football prodigy to a two-year contract.
Sharks recruitment manager, Chris Wilson, yesterday revealed Stuart was a big fan of Clune and would closely monitor the progress of the rookie halfback.
Speaking from Sydney, Wilson said the Sharks coach had shown “a lot of interest” in the exciting Junee talent.
“He’s (Stuart) looking forward to working with Sam,” Wilson said yesterday. “Ricky is always really interested in players who play in the key positions.
“Sam plays six or seven and Ricky played seven.”
A gifted halfback of the late 1980s and 1990s, Stuart did his football homework before recruiting Clune to the Sharks.
“Ricky heard different stories about Sam, so he scanned a video to see for himself,” Wilson said.
The dream deal with Cronulla may give Clune the inside running to get Kimmorley’s coveted halfback spot at the Sharks as early as 2010.
In joining a growing list of young players from the region to rocket to the attention of NRL clubs in recent months, Clune has also followed in the footsteps of Laurie Daley and Adam Perry.
Daley and Perry were Junee juniors who shot to fame with Canberra and Canterbury respectively.
Clune joins Riverina schoolboys Josh Murray, Cameron Woo, Matthew Hands and Cameron Breust on the springboard of an elite league career.
Wilson said Clune’s contract would enable the teenager to complete high school and continue his league development.
“We provide a rugby league education via camps and skill sessions,” Wilson said. “We will closely watch his progress and hopefully he will develop.”
Wilson is adamant Clune is highly rated by the Sharks.
“We’re pretty impressed by Sam and not only by what he can do on the football field,” Wilson said.
“He’s a level headed young bloke and comes from a good family.
“He’s got the right sort of discipline and a really good work ethic.”
The son of John and Denise Clune, Sam will be in the Sharks backyard in 2008 as the family are moving to Wollongong. |

Dubbo Junior Rugby League president Neil Millgate and Dubbo City Council director of administration and finance Paul Bennett look over the redevelopment plans for the junior clubhouse. |
FIRST STAGE OF REDEVELOPMENT BEGINS AT JUNIOR CLUBHOUSE
Story & Photo By : BILL NORTH Dubbo Junior Rugby League has begun the first of three stages of upgrades to the junior clubhouse facility at Apex Oval.
Stage one will see 170 square metres of grassed area at one end of the clubhouse raised and concreted.
The materials used for the project include the concrete slabs from the old uncovered grandstand at Apex Oval.
It is hoped that these initial extensions will make the area more multi-purpose and suitable for presentations, according to Dubbo Junior Rugby League president Neil Millgate.
“Our aim is to make this area a more entertaining area to do the presentations during carnivals,” he said.
“We hope to have it covered further down the track.”
Stage two will include widening the walls of the existing clubhouse to make it more suitable for lectures and seminars while stage three will be a training facility built at the eastern end of the clubhouse.
“It’s all about progress,” Millgate said.
“NSW Sport and Recreation and the Dubbo City Council have both been very supportive and provided us with grants to go through with the project,” Millgate said.
“We have received donations from people around town and the Dubbo Sports Council and several businesses have also helped us out.
“Dubbo has three Country Rugby League development officers now, which is more than most regional centres, and they need to have adequate facilities to do their jobs most effectively. We now get to make the building a bit bigger for them.”
It is planned that both stages one and two will be completed in time for the Centenary of League celebrations starting in Dubbo on Anzac Day.
It is hoped that stage three will be completed in either 2009 or 2010. |
MANLY SET UP YOUTH PROGRAM
Story By :
THE Manly Sea Eagles have set up a program with the Caloundra Falcons that will provide a direct pathway for emerging young talent on the Sunshine Coast to play for the Sydney NRL team.
Manly chairman Scott Penn said the Queensland base at Caloundra would extend the reach of the club with a talent feeder program giving young players in the region an immediate association with one of the code's major clubs.
"Manly will provide support in all areas and we are committed to a long term partnership which will not only include trial games but the possibility of staging at least one NRL game for the 2009 season,'' Mr Penn said.
"We will also be sharing significant football resources to the partnership which will include playing and coaching personnel.''
He said with the Falcons expected to be admitted to the Queensland Cup competition in 2009, it was a partnership that would benefit both clubs.
"The Manly Board ... are working on some exciting developments in and around the area to sustain the partnership well into the future,'' he said. |

YOUNG GUNS ROAR ON U/14 LEAGUE TOUR
Story By : Kris Karas
BALMAIN’S all conquering U/14 Young Guns rugby league team have returned from a successful four match tour of northern NSW and Queensland.
Under the coaching of experienced mentor Ken Stapleton, the Tiger cubs showcased their emerging junior talent with standout performances from half back Joseph Touma, prop Atu Politoni, fullback Alex Kerti, hooker Grant Bunch and winger Sam Williams.
The Young Guns impressed country officials with their courage and skill to register victories over Group 1 (14-10), Ballina Seagulls (28-10), Southport Tigers (60-0) and Southport Invitational (22-10).
A highlight was defeating Ballina for the Clae Webb Cup, a trophy that perpetuates the memory of the former Balmain Jersey Flegg half back who collapsed and died on August 5 last year while playing for Erina Eagles in a Jim Beam Cup fixture against Cabra-matta at Cabramatta Sports Ground.
Touma, a bright prospect from Concord-Burwood United, picked up the best and fairest award for his sharp displays while livewire hooker Bunch collected the Coach’s award.
Hard running Politoni (Best Forward) and attacking dynamo Kerti (Best Back) also picked up awards along with elusive winger Williams (Players’ Player).

G4 CALLS FOR COACHES
Story By : Geoff Newling
GROUP 4 Rugby League secretary Ross Hamilton has called for applications for not only its senior, Under 18 and Under 16 sides for next season but also a Group 4 Shield side.
Hamilton said a Shield side, made up of players from the Group 4 Second Division, would be entered in the CRL's Centenary Celebrations.
"There is a competition for Second Division sides," Hamilton said.
"It's the first time we've had a Shield side but they will be entered in the Second Division."
Applications to coach not only the G4 Shield side but the senior, Under 18 and 16 sides close with Hamilton (PO Box 142, Inverell) on November 4.
"It will be interesting to see what sort of side the Second Division teams come up with," Hamilton said.
Last season Luke Taylor coached the senior Group 4 side, Ron Dellar had the 18s and Jamie Gallen was in charge of a talented Under 16s.
Hamilton said while Northern Division (and the other divisional bodies) had been abolished for the new regional structure, the "Northern Division trials" may still be held.
"The three Groups û Group 4, 19 and 21 (who made up Northern Division) û are keen to run trials in that same format next year," Hamilton said.
"But a decision won't be made until after the CRL annual conference in December.
"The three groups are keen to play the trials before going into their new regional competitions.
"It's still only a proposal and up to the individual clubs in their group to say yes or no.
"All the clubs are keen to run the Northern Division pre-season competition again too. That went off well."
Hamilton urged all clubs to also remember to apply to play in Group 4's first and second divisions.
"Applications for that close October 31," he said.
"If anyone needs an application they can contact me."
Hamilton also said Quirindi and Werris Creek clubs may be about to merge.
"There are moves afoot to combine Quirindi and Werris Creek," he said.
"The Creek did it tough in Group 4 first division this year and apparently they have been approached to combine with Quirindi for next season." |
The team arrived in Nyngan late on Thursday afternoon and we got lost in a town with 20 streets.
Col Wright from the Far Western Academy took us to our new home for the next few days.
Our hosts were fantastic, everything was arranged, people from all over the Nyngan district had activities organised which include pigs chasing, motor bike riding and catching a few yabbies.
Col Wright & Ken Fitzgerald had been planning this trip for the past 12 months and it all went off with out a hitch.
On game day ( Saturday ) there were two games on before the much publicised game against the Cronulla Sharks.
From the Kick off the Far Western boys were right into it, they play a tough brand of footy out there and the Cronulla boys got smashed, to their credit, it only took 10 minutes for the young Sharks to regroup and give it back to the Country boys.
De La Salle's Dion Beattie put the Sharkies 1st points on the board with a good try to put the ball down close to the uprights, and then Engadine's Micheal Morris added the 2 points, the Sharks led 6 - 0.
From the kick off the Sharks made plenty of meters, then on the last Man of the Match Reece Davidson (De La Salle) burst through the Academies defence to dive across the line, again Morris converted to make the score 12 - 0.
The Far Western boys put on a couple good moves which saw their winger run to the line only to knock on ingoal.
In the second of three 20 minute stanza's, the Cronulla boys had to work hard to get out of their own half when Ryan Giles (De La Salle) punched through half a dozen defenders to run 55 meters to score, this time it was Brad Ring from the Engadine Dragons who converted and added 2 valuable points.
Stacey Morell from Cronulla Caringbah came on the ground with immediate effect, using his skill and pace to carve havoc in the middle of the paddock with some great runs.
Ryan Giles capitalised went he caught a good little pass from half back Harry Day (Engadine Dragons) to score an untoughed try again under the black dot, Brad King converted and the score blew out to 18 - 0.
The Far Western Academy boys hit straight back when the 5/8 chipped the ball over the Sharks defensive line and regathered to score a fine try which was easily converted. 18 - 6.
The Academy boys were in again when they ran the ball, it got out to the wingers who fought his way to the line with a couple Sharks hanging on.
Rea Pittman from Cronulla Caringbah had a strong game, running hard at the country boys all day.
The Sharks forwards Zac Wedersweiler (De La) & Tom Fry (Cronulla Caringbah) kept running hard desipte the heat and caused some great clashed with the Far West big men.
In the 3rd stanza, the Sharks worked hard to get with in 10 meters of the try line and the Gymea Gorilla's Jack Sommerfield crashed over to make the score 24 - 12.
Andrew Montgomery (De La) was knocked out in the 1st third by a flying right hander then came back with vengence to make good meters later in the game.
Luke Dodge from the Dragons played well as did Menai Roosters forward Alex Bedford, Jackson Clark (De La) was the little general, with Harry Day steered the Sharks well and gave them plenty of opportunities.
The final score was 28 - 12
The Sharks coaching staff were fantastic lead by Steve Hardy & Les Davidson with Wiggy & Luke (Gorilla's) made the trip a great experience for all.
“The boys really stuck it to their more fancied opponents and should have score a couple more tries which would have put the pressure on the Sharks, said Steve Easman, Assistant FWAS coach.
“But credit to the Sharks, they defended really well and took the opportunities when they came,” he said.
The Sharks are hoping to invite the far Western Academy team to Cronulla early in the new year to show the Nyngan boys how we do things in the Shire as well as play a game against next years under 14's.
Thanks to Ken Fitzgerald the Sharks Development Secetary, Col Wright the Far West coach and Kathy Barber from the Far Western Academy of Sport for a great weekend.. Learn More |

Cowra’s under 18s will try and build their pack around workhorse front-rower Josh Newling next season. |
MAGPIES TO LEARN FROM GRAND FINAL LOSS
Story & Photo By :
Cowra’s under 18s coach Greg Clements said his side will learn from their grand final defeat after going down to Orange CYMS at Carrington Park last Sunday.
The dominant side for the majority of 2007, Cowra battled into the grand final but fell against a surging CYMS unit. The Magpies didn’t taste defeat for the whole of the home-and-away season, but were humbled twice by the Orange club in the finals.
Speaking after last Sunday’s loss, Clements predicted the players backing up again in 2008 would harness their feelings after the loss and use it as motivation next season.
“Half the blokes won’t be here next year but for the young blokes in their first grand final loss, hopefully they will remember it and it won’t happen again,” he said.
Poor first halves proved Cowra’s undoing in their two semi-final losses, giving up sizeable leads on both occasions to CYMS.
They trailed 20-6 at half time in the grand final last Sunday, while also being behind 18-6 in the major semi-final two weeks ago.
CYMS exacted revenge for their 2006 grand final loss at the hands of Cowra.
The Magpies produced a number of sensational second-half comebacks throughout the year, most notably against CYMS and Hawks in the regular season, but couldn’t bridge the deficits in the post-season.
They will try and build their side around cornerstone Josh Newling, who is still eligible for under 18s next season. |

Macksville SeaEagles Under 18's in action in this years Grand Final |
SEA EAGLES SOAR
Story & Photo By :
The Macksville Sea Eagles were flying high on Sunday.
They hosted the 2007 Carlton-Mid Group 2 Rugby League grand finals, and were soaring after the under 18s and first grade teams came away with premiership titles.
The interesting thing about the club is the fact both teams boast a number of Kempsey players.
The under 18s accounted for the Macleay Valley Mustangs, who did not look comfortable all game.
The wet weather did not help the Mustangs cause, as unforced errors and dropped balls cost them the grand final.
Unlike their opposition the young Sea Eagles dominated on the field and made the best out of every opportunity. The writing was on the wall for the Mustangs in the first 10 minutes when the Sea Eagles scored the first try. They crossed the line minutes later to open up a handy lead.
The Mustangs had moments of brilliance with Malcolm Webster and Mitchl Picker putting some much-needed points on the table.
Late in the second half it appeared the Mustangs were going to make a come back, however, the Sea Eagles dished out some bone cracking defence to ensure victory.
In the closest game of the day, Coffs Harbour won the reserve grade grand final 17-16 against Port Macquarie.
No one would have predicted the result of the first grade grand final between Sea Eagles and Orara Valley Axemen, especially after Orara had opened up a handy 24-8 lead at half time.
Macksville appeared to be down and out in the first half, with the Axemen dominating most of the play.
However, Macksville had a new lease of life in the second half and proved why they had made the grand final in the first place.
They scored minutes into the second-half and kept the points rolling.
They kept Orara scoreless in the second half and raked up 24 unanswered points to take out the 2007 Group 2 grand final 32-24. The Sea Eagles’ proud 20 years includes nine grand final appearances.
After losing in 2001, they went on to win the next four – a group record.
Paul Davis, who said he would retire at the end of the season, played with a broken wrist in the grand final and capped off a great career the best way possible. |

SHOCK LOSS: The Milton Ulladulla Bulldogs went down in the grand final against the Shellharbour Sharks despite an undefeated season. PICTURED: Raph Garnon. |
DOGS DEFEATED
Story & Photo : Daryll Cook
The Edwardian rugby league manuals, once upon a time, stressed the importance of character in players which was fine of course in those times and it mattered.
However, the importance of firepower overall was largely overlooked and, although it mattered in those times, Milton-Ulladulla Under 18 team sternly discovered the adage still exists when Shellharbour City Sharks returned fire to win the 2007 Group Seven premiership 30-24 at Ron Costello Oval last Sunday in ideal conditions.
For the valiant Dogs, they just couldn't consolidate a position that didn't exist, as the Sharks pack of forwards relentlessly patrolled their home ground with amazing determination and firepower.
To those of learning, it was always a question of which forward pack would dominate for a full 80 minutes at such an intense level.
In this area, the Sharks were completely in control and never allowed the Dogs to dominate except when Hatch broke clear into open space at the fourth minute in what appeared a certain opening Bulldog try when the referee immaturely stopped play and ridiculously gave the Bulldogs a penalty for a Sharks forward being ruled offside in the early lead-up.
The defending premiers were soon caught in the Sharks headlights when Shellharbour replacement prop Lloyd Purdy barged over at the seventh minute.
The Sharks then took revenge from some poor Dogs' field position when Sharks back rower Adam Dorker screamed over wide out, after pivot Pat Moulton unloaded at the 14th minute, which was quickly followed by a innocuous Bulldog handling mistake out wide that was later to have tragic ramifications as Sharks winger Shane Anderson sauntered across untouched for his first of three match tries to give the Sharks a handy 14-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

TEAMWORK WINS WARRIORS BERTH IN GRAND FINAL
Story & Photo By : Jody Chester
The team consists of five 11-year-olds Zeke Griffith, Bradley Bowman, Mathew Burgess, Matt Dorin and Emma Wykes.
The rest of children play in the under 10s Wellington competition. They are Ngahla Talbot, Lachlan Conn, Jessica Berryman, Jack Thompson, Lachlan Brown, Bradley McKnight, Henry and Tom Redfern.
The team also includes Teleisha Madden who is nine and Simon Slacksmith who will be nine in December.
After a gruelling game against SASS Strikers last weekend, the Wellington Warriors under 11s have made the soccer grand final in Dubbo.
In their semi-final match, the feisty Warriors fought back to even the full-time score to 2-all, and then scored two more goals in extra time.
This amazing show of teamwork should put them in good stead for their last game of the season this weekend.
Individual efforts worth mentioning included Zeke Griffith who had an outstanding game making numerous breaks through the SASS line of defence.
Our youngest Warrior Simon Slacksmith never stopped trying, hassling the SASS attack all game while Bradley Bowman’s continual clearance kicks up the field gave the SASS Strikers no chance to chase the Warriors down.
The Wellington Warriors will be playing the grand final this Saturday at Lady Cutler Oval 2 at 10am. Come along and support our children who have made a significant achievement in getting there.
These children have trained hard all year and with their talent and capabilities, anything is possible this weekend. |

UNDER 10S TAKE OUT LEAGUE TITLE
Story By :
In front of a record crowd and with perfect weather conditions the day was heralded as a tremendous success.
The day kicked off with an uncompetitive round robin between the under 7 and 8 teams from throughout the district.
With more than 100 players taking part in the round robin, players were able to experience a grand final day atmosphere and were presented with a medallion from Parkes and District president Craig Ridley.
The first of the competition games kicked off with the under 10s between Parkes Marist and Condobolin.
Parkes got off to a slow start as Condobolin charged over for an early 6-0 lead.
However, Joe Dwyer started to take control of the side with his deft passing and some great runs from the forwards saw Parkes make good yards.
They hit back with a try to Jesse Fardell to trail 6-4.
Despite both sides creating some good chances, neither team was able to score and at half time Condobolin still held a slender lead. |

The under 16 Cowboys at training this week. The boys are the only side to reach a grand final this year. |
U16S LOOK FOR GRAND FINAL WIN
Story & Photo By : Adam Ryan, President
As the only local side to reach a grand final this year, the Wellington under 16 Cowboys are fired up for a win this weekend.
In what is set to be a blockbuster game, the juniors will do battle against the Dubbo St Johns Club under lights, with kick-off at 6.30pm at Apex Oval this Saturday.
It seemed Dubbo had it all their way in the senior group 11 games so our young cowboys are ready to upset the Dubbo trend and bring the trophy home.
For some of the squad, it will be their last game in the junior league before stepping up to under 18s next year.
Some of the lads are even off to the big smoke as they have signed up with NRL clubs for the 2008 season.
Going into the finals, the Cowboys had three sides all looking like grand final contenders with our 12s, 14s and 16s.
Unfortunately our 16s were the only ones to make it to the final stage.
The junior Cowboys have had a good season, filling five full sides each week in 7s, 9s, 12s, 14s, 16s.
I would like to thank all the people who have showed support throughout the year including sponsors and parents who have helped out in one way or another.
A big thanks to Tom Peckham, Denise Barwick and Phillipe Bell - if it wasn't for these people there would not be junior league in Wellington as their time and effort kept the club afloat.
It would be good to see a huge crowd in maroon and white cheering on our young champions as they represent our town on Saturday night and hopefully bring home the goods.

CONCENTRATION: Will Nowlan looks to get the ball away during the under 16 Cherrypickers win over Wagga Kangaroos |
PICKERS SLAUGHTER ROOS
Story & Photo By :
IT was culling time at Fisher Park on Sunday as the Sullivan Cup 16's rugby league side downed their more fancied opponents the Wagga Kangaroos 24-0.
It was a great defensive effort by the 'Pickers as they continually stood firm against any thing the Roos threw at them, with continuous up beat talking from all players on the field especially fullback Codie Freeman.
From the outset Young ran hard and it wasn't long before Jordan Mclean made good meters and Chevy Maloney went close to scoring. They did go in first though when a wide move saw Brad Slater score in the corner.
Young, for the second time off the kick off, let the ball bounce and gave the Roos a sniff, but the Pickers held them out for four sets and with this went on the attack and a flying Maloney, from a great ball from, Tom Mulquiney scored midway.
Alex McSpadden converted and the score 10-0 with eight minutes to go.
Young started the second half the same as the first with Mclean and Mulquiney combining to make great ground and Mulquiney went wide and got a wide ball to Freeman who went over in the corner to make it 14-0 with 26 to go.
With 17 left on the clock Brad Veeney made a break and from the next play Brad Slater curved his way over the line and McSpadden's conversion put Young in a controllable lead 20 to 0.
Young's big fella Alex Slavin finished the Roos off completely with a barn-storming run and try to complete a great effort from the Sullies side.
The bench players all played well with Will Nowlan putting in a 100 per cent effort in defence along with John Dunn, Omar Assoum and Peter Griffith.
The player's player went to Jordan Mclean, who was a hand full for the Roos side with his hard running all game.
This week's game is at Tumut on Sunday and is against Wagga Brothers, with the winner going straight into the grand final in two weeks time.
The ‘Pickers defeated Brothers last time they met, but will have to lift to greater heights and intensity if they are to win as the Brothers side is lightening fast and showed this last time they met when their three tries came from within their own half.
If Young can show the same determination and defence they did against the Roos they could be booking a finals birth after this Sunday at Twickenham Oval. |
OPPOSITION TOO STRONG IN FINAL
Story & Photo By :
The Wingham Tigers under 13s went into Saturday's rugby league grand final at Jack Neal Oval attempting to make it their fourth premiership on the trot, but were unfortunately outplayed on the big day by an impressive Camden Haven Eagles outfit.
Early in the match, the boys were dominating the play with some great defence across the paddock.
But even with a barrage of strong runs, the Tigers could not break the defensive line and the Eagles soon scored a try against the run of play.
Right on the half time hooter the Eagles scored again to go to the break leading eight points to nil.
The second half did not start well for the Tigers with Camden Haven scoring early and converting to lead 14-nil.
Unlike last year, there was to be no fairytale comeback, and with the boys now tired in defence, the opposition scored twice more to run out winners by 26 points to nil.
Although a lopsided scoreline, the boys can hold their heads high, considering this was the first time we have been held to a nil score and only the second time a side has scored more than 20 points against them in eight years.
All 19 players are to be congratulated on their efforts, but on the day, big Jacko was the best, making plenty of yards to the end.
He was well supported by Mitch Slaven and Matt Prior, with none better than Daniel Howe in defence.
Tyson Lewis was always safe at the back, although he had to make many tackles.
Parents and supporters are thanked for their great support,
Without them it would not have been such a successful or rewarding season. |

STRONG TACKLE: A Dragons Under 16 player is tackled by Kandos defenders in the final home game of the season at Cahill Park. |
A ONE-SIDED CONTEST
Story & Photo By :
The Dragons Under 16's proved too classy when they played their last home game of the season at Cahill Park on Saturday, August 25.
Their opponents were the Kandos Under 16's and the match was a one-sided affair, with the final score being Mudgee 74 - Kandos 6.
Despite the loss, the Kandos boys can hold their heads high as they had only 11 players for the match and not once did they contemplate forfeiting.
They played a very competitive brand of football and the result could have been very different had they had a complete team in attendance. Their sportsmanship on the day was also of a very high standard and a credit to their coach, parents and club.
The Mudgee Junior League held its Appreciation Night for the Under 16's on Saturday night, with the night's proceeds going to help the boys have an end of season weekend away.
This team has just played its final game on Cahill Park, next year they take the step up to Under 18's in the main Group 10 competition.
The evening was full of fun with auctions, games and a trivia quiz held on the night.
The support for the evening was fantastic, with over 100 supporters turning up to officially show their appreciation to the out going Under 16 team and wishing them all good luck for the upcoming final series.
On Saturday (September 1) the Under 16's (minor Premiers) travelled to Lithgow to take on Bathurst St Pats in the major semi final. St Pats are the only team to have beaten the Mudgee boys this season. |

A try in the dying seconds to Alex McMillan delivered Forbes Magpies under 18s the club’s first Group 11 rugby league premiership since 2001 on Sunday. |
FAIRYTALE END FOR MAGPIES
Story & Photo By :
The Forbes Magpies had a dramatic fairytale end to their 2007 campaign on Sunday at Apex Oval in Dubbo, scoring a miraculous last minute win over Dubbo CYMS and bringing the Group 11 under 18s title back to Forbes for the first time since 1998.
The grand final hero for the Magpies was Alex McMillan, after he picked up a lose pass and steamed through the CYMS defence with just seconds remaining to secure an 18-14 premiership win.
Halfway through the second half CYMS had the wind in their sails and looked set to be the 2007 premiers.
With twenty minutes to go the Magpies trailed 14-8 and needed to produce something special bring the title back to Forbes.
The usually solid Forbes defence had abandoned them and CYMS were making inroads through the middle of the paddock.
Missed tackles and a failure to shut the ball down cost the side and handed plenty of opportunities to the Dubbo outfit.
The match was all CYMS and the heads of the large contingent of Forbes supporters began to look toward the ground.
Forbes were still trailing 14-8 with around 12 minutes to go when a penalty provided a bonus that saw the Magpies gain attacking field position.
A sharp backline movement saw Steve Gibbs cross the line but in depression failed to ground the football properly.
CYMS appeared to be coming home strong in the final 10 minutes, but someone forgot to tell the young Magpies who were not about to give up.
They received another piggy back down the field when they were awarded a penalty on their own goal line.
An ambitious long kick for touch by Sam Molloy found the Magpies restarting play on the half way line.
With eight minutes left on the clock the Magpies needed to score in this set but these hopes seemed to evaporate with the ball swung wide going to ground.
With both sides desperate to gain possession, the ball by CYMS was propelled forward and Forbes was awarded the feed just 10 metres out from the try line.
A backline movement which saw Michael James Hodge exercise great vision when a brilliant cut out ball found a flying Toby Brown, who crashed over in the corner.
Sam Molloy had a kick to tie the game at 14 a piece. The kick was waved wide and with just four minutes and 14 seconds remaining in the match the Magpies needed more points to stay in the hunt for the 2007 premiership.
The black and whites were now throwing everything they had at CYMS and found themselves in good field position.
Appeared to build momentum the Magpies lost the ball in what many thought would be another of the matches' turning points.
However, the Magpies never gave up as CYMS rucked the ball out of their 20.
A poor kick on the end of the set put Michael James Hodge in some space and when CYMS caught up with the Dubbo RSL player of the grand final, Forbes found themselves camped on the CYMS 30 metre line.
With time winding down Forbes, led by Australian schoolboy prop Todd Grace, chanced their arm and found the winning try when McMillan picked a stray pass up from Steve Gibbs on his bootlaces to cross out wide.
He then piloted the conversion to give the Magpies the most unlikely of wins and a dramatic 18-14 last minute victory.
After CYMS led 8-4 at the break the second half was a much more open affair however Forbes coach Andrew Burton admitted he thought his team was gone when CYMS took the 14-8 lead.
"I did think we were gone at that stage, we weren't going forward and CYMS had a spring in their step," Burton said.
"But my boys stuck to their guns and fought it right out to the end."
McMillan admitted he was an unlikely match-winner and claimed he was just in the right place at the right time.
"I didn't do much throughout the rest of the match so it was nice to get the match-winning try," he said.
"But it was a real team effort and we knew CYMS were a good team so we couldn't take anything for granted."
For the losing side captain Jeremy Brown was good at hooker while five-eighth Ryan Marlin led the side around well.
"It's pretty gutting to lose like that but we gave them the opportunities to beat us," Brown said.
"We've had some good battles with Forbes and knew they would fight to the end and that is what they did."

Thriller: Team mates congratulate Alex Greenslade after he scored a try as the full time siren sounded |
YOUNG GUNS SHINE
Story & Photo By :
THE Coastline Macleay Valley Mustangs under 18s advanced to next Sunday's Group 2 grand final after defeating the Sawtell Panthers in extra time at Verge St on Sunday.
The Mustangs were able to draw level after the bell at the completion of normal playing, when winger Alex Greenslade was able to force his way in the corner and gave the Mustangs the chance to achieve success in extra time.
The match up proved to be one of the best games seen at Verge St this year and now provides the junior Mustangs the opportunity to taste grand final success.
The Mustangs were first to score early on in the game when from the kick off Sam Howe charged up field and put them immediately on the attack.
They were first to score and increased the lead to 10-0 shortly after.
The Panthers were able to hit back prior to half-time and at the break it was 10-8.
The Panthers grabbed control of the match surging to an 18-10 lead in the second half.
With time running out it appeared the Mustangs were about to bow out of the Premiership race, but the classy backs in this Mustangs' outfit thought otherwise and a clever kick from Denis Ritchie allowed Liam Mecham the opportunity to bring them back into the match at 18-14.
With time almost up the Mustangs were again attacking and received a penalty 20m from the line.
However, the bell sounded as they were about to take the tap. They only had one shot at the line and the ball came wide to Greenslade who appeared held but he forced his way across the line.
This brought the huge crowd to life and also breathed life back into the Mustangs.
In extra time it was the other winger Luke White who, once in the clear, raced down the sideline and once confronted by the fullback he feigned to kick.
He completely fooled him and was across the line in a flash and, with the conversion, the Mustangs had taken the lead at 24-18.
The remainder of extra time was a grind with both sides trying to gain the ascendancy, but it was Malcolm Webster who put the issue beyond doubt by slotting a clever field goal to put the Mustangs clear 25-18 and into next week's decider.
Best for the Mustangs were front rowers Sam Howe and Brendan Organ who worked strongly throughout; Beau Kettle was in everything; Todd Cooper until injured; Webster was ever present in attack; wingers Greenslade, White and Matt Scott gave great support, as did Mecham and Danny Cooper.
Club president Jeff Haisell was disappointed with undisciplined play shown by players in the reserve grade game.
The game was lost because of this unruly play, although the team did fight back to close the gap on Port Sharks' lead 38-26.
However the Mustangs ran out of steam and Sharks won 50-26.
Trevor Towers showed his class and scored a couple of tries and Tony Duncan played his heart out all game.
Clint McCabe and Michael Hudson were the strength of the side and Jason Daley also played well. |
Congratulations to everyone who played in this years Grand Final |

LIGHTNING JAC: Jac Harmon will play a crucial role for the Tigers in the under 11s’ grand final on Saturday. |
TIGER CUBS’ SIX OF THE BEST
Story & Photo By : By JOSH GIDNEY
THE future of rugby league in Batemans Bay is in very good shape if the achievements of the Tigers junior sides are anything to go by.
Six teams have qualified for grand finals, an outstanding achievement considering only one side, the under 16s, made the grand final last year.
This weekend, three of these teams, the under 10s, under 11s and under 12s Gold, will carry the hopes of the rugby league community when they contest grand finals at Mollymook on Saturday.
The under 10s and 12s will meet Albion Park, while the under 11s will take on arch-rivals the Shellharbour Stingrays.
The following Saturday, the under 14s, under 15s and under 16s will venture to the home of the St George-Illawarra Dragons, WIN Stadium, to contest their grand finals.
The only Tigers side not represented is under 12 Black, and they finished
an impressive third in their competition.
"It has been our most successful year, and hopefully we can build on it next year," Tigers' junior secretary Neil Ferguson said.
The under 10 side are playing in only their first year of competition (younger grades play weekly but do not have a finals series or premiership). Previously, they were unbeaten for three years but suffered three losses this year to finish second.
As coach John Breust explains, the reasons for the team's success are simple.
"They just love their footy," he said.
"They all turn up to training, and we have a full team each week."
There are 20 players in the squad, which is too many for one side, but not enough for two.
"The forwards do their job and the backs do theirs, which is pretty good."
The under 11 Tigers have been among the Eurobodalla's best performed sporting teams this year, going through the season undefeated.
Losing the grand final would be particularly hard to take, but it is a distinct possibility, as the Tigers only beat the Stingrays in extra time last time the sides met, and this was at a high cost, with halfback Luke McCann breaking his arm.
Coach Ed Hill is not confident of winning.
"I reckon they'll get us without Luke," he said.
To prevent this, Hill may play Wyndham Peachey at halfback, alongside Jacob Hill, which may be difficult as Hill will be needed in defence in the centres.
Ferguson is more confident of victory for the under 12 gold side against Albion Park, as the boys are also a solid unit.
"They are an experienced side who have been together for four years," he said.
"The kids go to school together so they click well. They have a lot of strength in their forward pack, and if they defend well against Albion Park, they'll go alright." |

UNDER 15'S SECURE MINOR PREMIERSHIP
Story & Photo By :
The Kibblers under 15s rugby league side played their last home game of the season on Saturday and gave the crowd plenty to cheer about with a 24-0 whitewash of Orange CYMS. This win secured the young Magpies the Group 10 minor premiership.
From the outset heavy defence featured as play centered around the middle of the field early on before Cowra started to gain the ascendancy.
Great running from the forwards got the Magpies in good field position before a slick backline movement saw Ryan Downing scoring out wide.
A great conversion from Ryan saw Cowra lead 6-0 after 10 minutes. Cowra's defence was not giving the CYMS side any easy metres.
The Cowra boys with the ball in hand were showing great skills and this was evident in their next try in a 50-metre raid, where the ball went through 10 sets of hands with great support play before Matt Garside crashed over out wide in what was a brilliant team try giving the hosts a 10-0 lead.
While the boys were good with the ball, they were equally as good in defence, with all players committed and enthusiastic and really frustrating the opposition's attack.
It was through such defence that Cowra scored their next try when a CYMS lost ball was swooped on by Chaydin Reid, who scored under the posts with Ryan Downing adding the extras and Cowra went to the break leading 16-0.
The second half saw CYMS working hard to get back into the match and on plenty of occasions putting pressure on the Cowra line, but the young Magpies turned them back every time defending tenaciously.
Mid-way through the second half, Cowra's Chaydin Reid found room behind the opposition defence line before unloading a great flick pass whilst being tackled for Matt Garside to score his second try for the day.
Sam Ryan then completed the try scoring when he carried out a one-on-one strip and ran 30 metres to score with Cowra running out 24-0 winners.
Cowra were again strong right across the park in another top display of teamwork. Shaun Smith, Shannon Boyd and Matt Garside led the way up front. Michael Murray, Cameron Leal and Blake Sutherland got through a mountain of work.
Tom Bischof gave great service at dummy half whilst Bradley Wright, Dylan White, Sam Wright and Shaun Buhagiar were enthusiastic and slotted in well.
In the backs Jake Mossman and Chaydin Reid continue to combine well and create opportunities for the outside speed men. Sam Ryan, Brydon Hughes, Grant Kitchingman and Ryan Downing were all great in defence and made plenty of ground in attack.
Jarrod Dominello again worked hard at fullback and returned the ball strongly whilst Tom McKeown and Grant Charnock performed well. Shannon Boyd was voted McDonald's Players' Player.
This Saturday Cowra travel to Orange to take on the very strong Bloomfield side in the last round before the semi-finals.
With this being our last home game, the under 15s team and management would like to take this opportunity to once again thank all their sponsors: Kibblers Home and Trade Centre, Lachlan Furniture Pty Ltd, Austar, Westoil Petroleum, Beecher Wool Service, Breakout Motel, Cowra Concrete Products, Cowra Plaster Works, Cowra Turf, Dowd Brothers Bus Service, Lachlan Valley Landscaping, Nelligan's Sand and Gravel, Jason Temple Constructions, McFeeters Wool, Mick Cook Roofing, Mick Smith Constructions, Oliver Toyota, Sabatini Haircutters, Sportspower, Steve Watmore Electrical, Sutherland Plumbing, Sutherland Trenching and Tom Downing Painting. |

Cowra centre Lee McClintock looks for room to move during his side’s 24-18 loss to Orange CYMS in the major semi-final yesterday. Several chances went begging for the previously undefeated Magpies |
BURNED AT THE DEATH
Story & Photo By :
Cowra prop Luke Burns had three disallowed tries – including one after the siren – as Orange CYMS halfback Steve Morris almost single-handedly shattered the Magpies' unbeaten run in under 18s yesterday.
Burns was denied a try in a frantic final play after being adjudged to have lost the ball over the line as CYMS held on for a dramatic 24-18 major semi-final win at Bathurst St Pats Sporting Complex.
The ball swept from one side of the field to the other and then back again before ending up in Burns' hands. The NSW Country under 18s front-rower appeared to score in the right corner but was ruled to have lost the ball sparking jubilant CYMS celebrations. If the try had been awarded, stand-in kicker Aaron Denzel would have had the opportunity to send the match into extra time with a difficult conversion attempt from the sideline.
Unbeaten during the regular season, Cowra must now beat Orange Hawks in a preliminary final clash next weekend to book a rematch against CYMS in the decider.
But it was Morris who ensured CYMS would be the first side into the Group 10 grand final with a virtuoso performance at the back of the scrum.
The dominating number seven scored two tries himself, including an 80-metre intercept effort five minutes from full time, and had a hand in two others. His flawless kicking display with four conversions from as many attempts meant he scored 16 of his side's points.
Upbeat Cowra coach Greg Clements was not overly concerned about his side losing their first finals match despite not being beaten during the home-and-away season.
"We were beaten by a better side on the day," he said.
"The week off didn't worry us. If we win next week, it (the loss) will do us a world of good.
"If we get an even share of the ball we're a chance. We'll bounce back next week against Hawks and with two grades playing it should be a good day."
CYMS drew first blood yesterday when Morris dummied his way over the line after only three minutes.
Aaron Denzel responded quickly for the Magpies finding Lee McClintock in open space to score.
But CYMS, aided by a strong breeze at their backs in the first half, swept to an 18-6 cushion thanks to two moments of magic from Morris.
He first found an unmarked Jono McCann in acres of space on the left wing before booting a 40/20 on the very next set of six. Lock forward Michael Nixon then broke off the back of the ensuing scrum to score easily for a 12-point lead.
Burns had two of his efforts disallowed for a double movement and held up to finish the half.
"We were over the line enough to win two games of football," Clements bemoaned.
It was then Denzel's turn to reach out and spill the ball over the line before Burns finally had some luck when he charged over close to the posts.
But Morris effectively sealed the match for the Orange club with a long-range intercept try from a wayward Tyler Nobes pass.
Rob Allen scored two minutes from full time to set up a grandstand finish but it was all to no avail as CYMS became the first side to trump the premiers in 2007.
Orange CYMS 24 (Steve Morris 2, Jono McCann, Michael Nixon tries; Morris 4 goals) defeated Cowra Magpies 18 (Lee McClintock, Luke Burns, Rob Allen tries; Aaron Denzel 3 goals). |

U 14A 2007 PRELIMINARY FINAL
DE LA SALLE V ENGADINE DRAGONS
Story By : Grant Drinkwater
Engadine No.7 Harry Day took a great catch from the De La Salle kick and Engadine put it through the hands.
They broke De La twice in a row and would have scored except for the ever reliable Ryan Giles whose great defence from the outset was an indispensable part of De La’s hard fought victory over the irascible Dragons.
Dragon’s Michael Morris did a great barging run early on to smash through the clutching De La players arms. He continued this type of play right through the game and was instrumental part of a ferocious Dragon’s attack, one of Engadine’s best on the day.
The game see sawed with De La putting on some heavy pressure but Engadine was up to it with desperate defence forcing an uncharacteristic drop ball by Reece Davidson, just when it looked like De La would get across the line.
Suddenly Engadine got the ball wide on the right side and was almost through. Nearer to De La’s line they put up for a beautifully executed bomb that edged past the posts on nice angle, dropped within the in-goal, bounced and wham! Engadine were on the board. The try was converted as well. 6-0 to Engadine.. LEARN MORE |

HOLY CROSS Junior Rugby League Club rule the roost after a memorable season in the 2007 Balmain Junior League competition.
The Rhinos are celebrating one of their finest campaigns on record after annexing both the Senior and Junior Club Championship trophies; the U/8 Benny Elias Shield as well as premiership titles in the U/11, U/12, U/15 and U/17 Div 1 age groups.
It has been a year to remember for Club president Stuart Stanton, secretary Gary Hinchliffe and the Rhinos fraternity who also supplied a batch of talented young footballers to the Balmain Junior Cup representative teams.
Promising cub Drew Laing received the Jack King Trophy for the U/16 Player of the Year while top forward prospect Matthew Mizzi,17, took out the Jan Carroll Memorial Award for his stand out peformances with the Rhinos’ champion U/17 outfit.

WELL WHAT A GAME!
Story By : Grant DRINKWATER (Sharkies Dad)
The thing I enjoy the most about this game was the absolute commitment of both teams.
There was no dirty play as the game was just too fast and physical to get sidetracked by any silly stuff.
The first ten minutes were end to end football with De La probably having a slight advantage with better field position and penalties going there way.
De La made some strong attacks through the middle of the ruck with their big forwards just driving through tackles leaving the Cronulla Caringbah guys scattered on the ground behind them.
But Cronulla Caringbah hung tight with some desperate defence to hold De La out.. Learn More |

THREE AGE GROUPS TAKE PART IN JUNIOR RUGBY GALA DAY
Story & Photo By :
The Canowindra Junior Pythons arrived at Endeavour Oval for the Orange Emus Gala day and once again all three age groups took part as the Luke Clarke Under 8s again had lots of players.
Under 10s - The Canowindra Services Club Under 10s played Bathurst first and Bathurst ran away with the game as the 10s took a while to get settled.
In a physical game the 10s showed they had learnt a lot this season as they put together many phases in attack as they kept the ball while rolling down the field.
Brenton Clements, Will Fagan, Daniel Schuler and Wesley Blair formed the basis of the defence while Levi Richards and Callum Clyburn provided the speed in attack.
Cal crossed for the 10s first try with a 50 metre dash over the tryline after strong lead up work from the forwards.
Levi Richards made it two trys for the team after he barged his way over the line and Brenton Clements almost added to the tally only he was held up over the tryline.
Matt Schuler also found gaps in Bathurst's defence but couldn't quite break through the final tacklers.
The 10s second game was against Emus Green and the 10s went down narrowly, 4-3.
Levi Richards scored twice the first from a solo run down the left line before Brenton Clements made a swift break and just before he was tackled he threw a speculator pass which Levi caught and crossed the line for his second try.
Callum Clyburn scored the team's third try after he grabbed the ball from an Emus runner and took off in the other direction for a brilliant individual effort.
Tom Robson continued to improve as he found gaps in the Emus line and started to attack, while Wesley Blair and Will Fagan formed a great forward combination, kept the ball in hand when the 10s Pythons had the ball and pushed the Emus backs, backwards when Emus had possession.
Dan and Matt Schuler were always there to help Will and Wes every time they had the ball.
The 10s final game was against Forbes Blue was a hard fought encounter with both sides scoring four trys.
Tom Robson led the way with bull like charges always supported by Will Fagan and Levi Richards.
Callum Clyburn agains scored two trys both showing off his speed off the mark and an ability to dodge defenders.
Wesley Blair set up Levi for his fourth try of the day while Callum and Brenton combined to send Dan Schuler across the line for the equaliser.
Dan and Matt Schuler attacked Forbes head on in defence and came up with many important tackles while Wes and Will could only be described as menacing in their umbrella like defence.. LEARN MORE |

Pambula/Merimbula under 18s Bulldogs were named Minor Premiers |
PAMBULA/MERIMBULA UNDER 18S MINOR PREMIERS
Story & Photo By : Merimbula News Weekly
Merimbula/Pambula Under 18s claimed the South East Group 16 rugby league 2007 Minor Premiership with a convincing 52-22 win over Eden Tigers at the Pambula Sporting Complex on Saturday.
The Tigers proved why they are the team to beat in 2007 after showing glimpses of form with a soft win over the undermanned Eden outfit.
The locals went into the break leading 28-4 and were scoring a point a minute in the second half until Eden slowed play down.
Star centre and try scoring machine Elliot Gibbons led the charge for his team bagging four tries.
With the semi-finals just two weeks away the Bulldogs decided to rest players who were struggling with minor injuries and actually played the second half with only 12 men.
The Bulldogs defence improved on its effort against Tathra and showed in the first half how aggressive they can be off the defensive line.
They will need to work on this over the next two weeks, and they will need to as they take on the huge Cooma Stallions in the Major Semi-Final at Eden on Sunday the August 26.
Tries for the Bulldogs came from Elliott Gibbons 4, Ben Preo, Tom Reardon, Ivan Schneider, Tory Smith, Trent Fitzpatrick and Jack Nugent while Wade Edmed kicked 6 goals. |

Forbes halfback Michael James Hodge will be a key to the efforts of the Magpies in taking out minor premiers the Parkes Spacemen this weekend in Dubbo. |
DEFENCE THE KEY
Story by :
Forbes Magpies under 18s will have to be at their defensive best this Sunday when they take on Group 11 minor premiers Parkes in the rugby league competition's major semi-final at Dubbo.
But assistant coach and manager Curtis Wykamp believes his team is up to the task after top performances in recent weeks.
The junior Magpies, the club's sole qualifier for semi-finals, have defeated cup favourites Dubbo CYMS twice in the last month.
The latest was a gutsy 16-10 win last Sunday in which they only let CYMS in twice.
Wykamp said a similar effort would be needed to beat Parkes, who boast a strong attack.
"Parkes are a good attacking side, they've scored a fair few points this year, but our defence has been very good over the last month or so," he said.
"Parkes have a few blokes who can score from anywhere like Elroy Samuels who is probably one of the quickest blokes in the Group.
"He's dangerous whenever he gets the ball.
"But just their general work ethic is something to watch, they don't throw the ball around, they just keep working and keep grinding away," he said.
Wykamp said he and coach Andrew Burton had focussed on defence at training in recent weeks and the work appeared to have paid off.
"We've been working on defence because there were a few games earlier in the year when we leaked points when we shouldn't have," he said.
Wykamp said forwards Zac Merritt, Steve Gibbs, Alex McMillan and Todd Grace provide the defensive lead in the Magpie camp, along with fullback Brendan Collits, but said it would be "up to everybody to pull their weight" this Sunday.
Merritt, McMillan, Rowan Bentick and Tim Burke were stand-outs for Forbes at Apex Oval last Sunday while the points came from one try each to Jake Parslow, Joel Davie and Mitch Goodwin.
Centre and goal-kicker Sam Molloy took his season tally past 150 points with two conversions.
Wykamp said Forbes should be at full strength this Sunday with forwards Todd Grace and Jesse Acheson likely to return after missing the CYMS match, while McMillan hoped to shrug off a hip injury.
The under 18s match will kick off at 12.30pm at Dubbo's No 1 Oval this Sunday, following reserves and preceding first grade.
The winner will advance to the grand final in a fortnight while the loser meets the winner of the Dubbo derby between CYMS and Macquarie. - Team will be published in Saturday's Advocate. |
CRONULLA JUNIORS - DE LA SALLE UNDER 14A (1) MATCH REPORT
Story & Photo By :
A very entertaining match played in windy, dusty conditions. Such a shame that what was once newly refurbished lawn (NRL) has become such a barren and uninviting playing surface now.
Hopefully, with a well earned rest in the off season and the newly installed recycled water irrigation system, Captain Cook may once again return to its former glory.
For those too young to remember, that means a playing surface covered in grass!
Unfortunately there are many young players around the Shire (and indeed NSW) who probably have no idea what it is like to compete on soft, well grassed playing surfaces.
The De La KNIGHTS certainly put the sword to the dragon today but not before a very tough and arduous battle.
If only the EELS players looked as “hot” in their team shirts as our De La 14A1’s look in their newly acquired sponsored shirts!
Whenever we play Engadine we always know we are in for a tough match and this week was definitely no exception. The DRAGONS came out breathing fire but De La refused to lie down and weathered the STORM.
A couple of Engadine spectators crowed like ROOSTERS every time a decision went against their team but there were no BLUES during the match as matches between these two teams are always played in the right spirit although I’m still not sure whether the loud spectator standing behind the scorer’s table was calling the referee a moron or a MAROON!
One ill informed spectator even suggested that our club were RAIDERS ! (As we’ve heard so often, some people never let the truth get in the way of a good story!)
Engadine clawed like TIGERS to get back into the match but our guys defended like TITANS so no one could say we played like BUNNIES this week!
Some of our forwards appeared like bucking BRONCOS, forcing the opposition to ride ‘em like COWBOYS, as they continually dragged defenders along for the ride!
We seized opportunities like hungry SEA EAGLES while our defenders constantly attacked as do SHARKS in a feeding frenzy.
We have pace to burn right across the squad and when our backs accelerate you’d swear they were being chased by a pack of ferocious BULLDOGS.
Our winger pounced like a PANTHER in the dying seconds to slam the ball down under the posts. At the end of the day both teams left the former NRL (newly refurbished lawn) as dirty and bloodied WARRIORS, ready to take on the battle of semi-final football next week.
Congratulations to all players on a hugely successful season so far and best of luck during the Final Series. |
CRONULLA CARINGBAH U14 A's 2007 MINOR PREMIERS
Story & Photo's :
Congratulation to Cronulla Caringbah U14A's for finishing as Minor Premiers in the Under 14 A Competition as they thumped poor old Bosco 72 - 4.
In possibly the best game of the season, De La 14a (1) had a much toughter time against the Engadine Dragons at Captian Cook oval.
De La finishing the stronger of the 2 teams in the battle for second place on the ladder & just getting home 14 - 0 against a very well drilled Dragons outfit coached by Corey who has done a fantastic job with this team.
Aquinas Colts put the sword to De La Salle 14a (2) with a good end of season belting, this will do well for the Colts as they will face off against a very powerful Engadine Dragons next week.
We will also see Minor Premiers (for the 2nd time in a row) Cronulla Caringbah face De La Salle (1) in the major Semi, with the winner straight through to this years Grand Final.
Both De La Salle (2) & St. John's Bosco have had tough years in 2007.
Both teams coming up from the B's this year found the going tough in the A grade, as every one who watched the Under 14 A's comp this year knows, both these teams will have learnt & will be better, faster and more competitive footy teams & will be looking forward to another crack in the A's again next year. Well done to all involved at De La & Bosco!!

FORM REVERSAL
Story By :
Canowindra Junior Tigers hosted Parkes at The Oval on Saturday and achieved some score reversals on their first round clash.
Under 8s
The Chris Williams Farm Supplies Under 8s tried their best but the Parkes side was too well drilled.
Egged on by coach Aaron Reid's enthusiasm Jordan Middleton and Codie Reid led the way with many swift hit ups which always made ground.
Miles McKenzie and Shae Reid backed up the ball carrier and helped take play forward into Parkes' half.
Jai Black combined with Parkes extra Jye Dillon which saw Jye run quickly away for the Tigers only try.
Under 10s
The Canowindra Service's Club Under 10s came agonisingly close to their first win in a while when they drew 22-22 with Parkes.
Parkes opened the scoring with a converted try and were confident that they could go on with the scoring spree, however they hadn't counted on Jake Wythes who crossed the line for the Tigers first four pointer.
Daniel Friend added the extras which tied the score up at 6 apiece.
Parkes hit back with another converted try which made the score 12-6 before Gene Tarrant burst through the Parkes' defence and flew over the line.
Jumara Cutmore converted the try which again evened up the score at 12 all.
Jake Wythes put the Tigers in front for the first time, 16-12, as he went over the line for his second try of the day.
Right on the half time hooter Parkes again hit back and the 10s went to the break locked up at 16 all.
The second half was a super half of league as both sides tried to gain the upper hand, but the defence of both Tigers and Parkes was equal to the task.
Callum Clyburn again put the Tigers ahead as he sprinted through the defence and after Zak Whitehead's conversion the 10s Tigers again led by a converted try.
The Tigers held onto the lead with some very tight defence led by Nathan Whatman and Louis O'Keefe but Parkes exploited a slight gap in the defence and scored the equaliser, which left the score at 22-22 at full time.
Under 12s
Earsman's Mixed Concrete Under 12s held Parkes scoreless as they won 14-0, a fitting reply to the narrow loss to Parkes in the first round.
The win put the 12s into second place on the ladder close to the semis.
Tim Middleton, Makk McNaught, Jayden Brown and Simon Whatman layed the platform for the win as they vigorously took the ball up and tackled anything that moved, as Tim in particular aimed for the ankles which stopped many Parkes attacks instantly.
Alex Willson and Kurt Tidswell formed an impenetrable barrier in the centres which also stopped Parkes from gaining momentum.
The Parkes forwards were equal to the Tigers in the middle of the ruck so it was up to the 12s outside players to make the breaks.
Particularly fine passing along the backs saw Bradyn Cassidy provide the extra man in the backline and he passes the ball to winger Josh Trayhurn who scored in the corner.
The difficult conversion was missed and the 12s Tigers went to the break four points in front.
The second half was a repeat of the first, a very close contest as Parkes ran on their gentle giant to try and break the tigers defence with his slow moving huge bulk.
However the Tigers persevered and although the Parkes giant always gained ground he never broke the 12s defensive line.
The 12s second try came from another backline move where Bradyn Cassidy again joined the backs and scored in the left corner for an 8-0 lead to the Tigers.
The game was put beyond doubt when Bradyn scored his second try after Alex Willson made the initial break before he passed to Bradyn who ran twenty metres, dodged defenders and scored mid way between uprights and corner post.
Tim Middleton proved his versatility as he kicked the conversion and the Tigers won a vital game 14-0.
Under 14s
The Canowindra Produce Under 14s continued to narrow the gap on their opponents as they went down 54-6.
Beau McNaught continued to impress as he almost caught the defence napping when he ran on the fifth tackle but was pulled up short of the line.
Josh Cooney and Gerrard Eppulstun worked hard in the centres as they stifled Parkes attacks and made ground with solid hit ups.
Dan Middleton and Kain Earsman formed a formidable combination in the second row as they formed a barrier with Beau that the Parkes attackers took a while to break.
The score was 32-0 at half time and soon after the 14s scored their only points of the game as Beau McNaught again burst through the Parkes defence and this time he went right through as he sprinted fifty metres and scored under the posts.
Matt McLean converted the try and the score was then 38-6.
The Canowindra Produce 14s again defended as Troy Jenkins, Nick Willson and Luke Watt pulled off some superb tackles which denied Parkes the chance to score.
Parkes ran out winners 54-6 but the enthusiasm and combinations shown by the younger 14s gives hope for a brighter future next year.
Under 16s
The Kithome Under 16s again showed an impressive combination as they triumphed 32-24 over Parkes.
This was another match where teams swapped try scoring which kept the game tight and competitive.
The 16s first came from a signature hit up form James 'Cho' Augustin who barged over some Parkes defenders before he passed to Nick Whatman who scored near the posts.
Stuart Scott added the extras for a six point lead which Parkes levelled soon after as they found a gap in the Tigers defence and scored a six pointer.
After two 'almost' trys, the crowd again cheered as Cho Augustin scored mid way on the right hand side after another rampaging hit up and Stuart Scott duly added the extras.
Parkes again struck back before Haydon Hodge received the ball just inside the Parkes half, accelerated through fifty metres, stepped the full back and scored in the corner for a 16-12 lead.
James Vitnell started the next try with an impressive run before he off loaded to Cho Augustin who again crashed over the line for a half time score of 20-12.
Brad Bowman epitomized the commitment from the 16s with a withering burst of speed from the opening kick off.
He was supported in the backline by Tom Roth and Abram Wilcox who always gained ground and were solid under any kicks from Parkes.
Brad Stewart was the next Tiger over the line as he ran hard down the wing and scored in the right corner for a twelve point lead.
Parkes hit back with a converted try and narrowed the gap to six points before Parkes touched the kick off ball and allowed it to go into touch for an attacking scrum to the Kithome 16s inside Parkes quarter.
Haydon Hodge peeled off the scrum and forced his way over the line for a 28-18 score line, before Parkes scored again to again narrow the gap to four points.
A long pass along the backline missed its target but Brad Stewart ever the opportunist, picked up the ball and dived over the line in the right corner for his second try of the game.
The 16s Tigers ran out winners 32-24 although two players were sin binned from each side as the game boiled over in the final minute with an illegal act which saw other players enter the fray and get sinbinned.
This week the Junior Tigers have the bye before they travel to Grenfell for their final round match on Saturday 11th August. |

TOP FORM: Under 14s Tiger Keegan Spellacy palms off a player during their landslide win against Berkeley on Saturday. |
YOUNG TIGERS CONTINUE GOLDEN SEASON
Story By : SARAH WEBB
THE Bay's under 14s Tigers proved years of teamwork brews a winning combination after they smashed the comp's second placed Berkeley side on Saturday at Mackay Park.
There was little left for coach Jeff Cox to praise, after his boys won 50 to six. And it has put the Tigers in a convincing lead on the comp's ladder.
Cox said a couple of factors contributed to their landslide win. The Tigers were faultless in their team work, and Berkeley was missing one of their star players.
"I thought it was the best I have seen [the Tigers] play," Cox said.
The victory seemed all the sweeter as the Bay boys appeared to be almost half the size of the average Berkeley boy. Cox said, in general, the players are a lot bigger further north, but it's a fact that has not intimidated the Bay.
While the Tiger's golden season points to perfection, Cox said the success has taken a lot of work.
"They have been together for a good three to four years, and basically when they came together they were hopeless.
"Every year they've got progressively better. They're now used to each and have got a good bond," Cox said.
Last year the team were beaten in the preliminary finals, but all signs are pointing towards the boys becoming grand finalists this year.
Either way, Cox is thrilled with his side, who he said are a fantastic bunch of kids.
"They're a real testament to their mums and dads."
But where the players make their game great, Cox said co-coach Joey Broadhurst makes every other facet great.
"He's the Pied Piper for our team, where he goes the kids follow.
"He sails under the radar, but anyone who knows Joey would not have a bad word to say about him," Cox said. |

ROUND 10 UNDER 14a's NEWS
Story & Photo's :
Cronulla Caringbah had plenty of the ball at home to trounce a soft De La Salle (2) 54 - 0, who played their worst game of the year & know they can play a lot better.
Engadine fought all the way to the final bell to over come the Gymea Gorilla's 34 - 6, "Gymea just kept coming at us all day", said Dragons coach Corey.
Bosco came against Competition Leaders De La Salle (1) this week and put up a gutsy effort but went down 68 - 0. Looks like Bosco have a player or 2 knocking of the rep's selectors doors.
At half time score was 28 - 0, De La started to spread the ball wide and the pilied on 40 unanswered points which included 4 tries in the second half by the De La right winger.

TOP TEAM: Tristan Nisbett has been part of the Milton Ulladulla Bulldogs Under 18s team and helped the team move to the top of the ladder. |
DOGS DOMINATE COMP
Story By : Daryll Cook
A SLICKLY co-ordinated Milton-Ulladulla Bulldogs Under 18 team demolished a hard-trying Culburra Dolphins last Saturday at Kevin Walsh Oval scoring nine tries to register a tearaway 46-0 victory and consolidating their outright leadership with five games remaining for the season proper.
With eight established regular members of the squadron missing through injuries, the valued remainder were fantastic as they scored a large amount of team tries. They defended their try line with calm and silken placidity as the ninth-placed Culburra fired four determined shots at the Bulldogs line during the first stanza and two good attempts at scoring in the second half only to be halted by stoic defence.
The Dogs opened up the account at the seventh minute when halfback Matt Simpson slipped under the Culburra uprights after a thankful bulldozing burst through the Dolphins ruck and into open space by prop-forward Danny Horne.
Custodian Tristan Nesbitt added the extra to send the Dogs ahead 6-0 before Nesbitt scored after supporting a slashing run by pivot Ashley Hatch who brought the attack out wide giving extra room for the attackers.
With devastating suddenness, Simpson once again was on the scene when he trailed both Nesbitt and Hatch from inside passes to score at the 23rd chime.
This was as a result of some brilliant attack and defensive work from the two Bulldog second-rowers in Dominic Pirello and Chris Salafia witnessed by a hectic amount of work clocked-in by rake-forward Scott Papworth.
Scott tackled himself senseless throughout the encounter with utility replacements Luke Elwin and Liam Quinn and winger Matt Cook and centre Danny Peat always seeking the ball and attempting to straighten the attack.
At the 27th minute, the pedigree of Hatch was again apparent when the youngster beautifully slipped in behind the Culburra defence to stroll over before Simpson cemented a Bulldog halftime lead by scoring after Elwin and outside-centre Todd Donahue were involved and after Nesbitt gathered-up the extras the Dogs raced to a hard earned 28-0 lead.
Straight after the break, Nesbitt raced the full length of the ground to score after returning a tragically placed kick-off.
Winger Matt Cook then nicely placed himself to find a Pirello despatch down the blind side to skip past two attempted Culburra attempted tackles to score sending the Dogs ahead 36-0 after 60 minutes of play.
Six chimes later, another searing run by the rugged Pirello down the short side resulted in centre Daniel Peat crossing over and after Simpson broke into the clear at the 68th minute after winger Tom Andreski, prop forwards Raph Garnon and Brian Travers and centre Jayden Robinson detonated the following try for Simpson's fourth crossover. With Nesbitt's fifth goal, the competition leaders closed the account 46-0.
Salafia, Papworth, Hatch, Simpson and Hatch busy throughout, with the hard-working efforts of Marty Willis behind the scenes also did not go unnoticed by selectors. |

SIZE MATTERS

Cowra’s Luke Burns (left) and Lee McClintock are expecting a physical challenge from two Tongan representative sides they will play on the NSW Country under 18s tour this week.
Cowra's NSW Country under 18s stars Luke Burns and Lee McClintock are under no illusions about the opposition they will face on the side's overseas tour.
The squad is scheduled to play two Tongan representative sides in a frenetic one-week tour. The Magpies duo flew out of the country on Saturday and will play their first match against a Presidents under 18s side today.
Both players know they will have to adapt to the strong, physical presence of the Tongan sides in stifling heat.
"I expect them to be big and tough. I'll get a lot out of it. We'll learn about playing against people with a lot of size, 100 plus kilograms, almost like the NRL," McClintock said.
Eighteen-year-old Burns agreed with the speedy winger.
"I know they're going to be big, going to be huge I suppose. I'm just going to look at playing good footy," he said.
Both players also expressed surprise at getting four players in the squad despite Western Division getting knocked out of the NSW Country Championships in the first round.
"Usually they don't," Burns said of selectors picking players from a team who fails to clear the first hurdle. "Especially getting knocked out in the first round and getting four of us in (was a bit of a surprise)."
The green and whites were humbled 48-24 by Northern Rivers at Mudgee on May 5. McClintock managed to cross for a second-half four-pointer in the eight tries-to-four defeat.
Bathurst's Sterling Siejka and Parkes back-rower Brad Graham are the other players from the region included in the junior outfit.
There was some doubt about whether Siejka would be allowed to make the tour after his part in an all-in brawl during Cowra's dramatic under 18s 24-all draw with the Panthers two weeks ago. He has since been cleared by the Group 10 executive.
Both Burns and McClintock agreed it will be easier adjusting to the trip with a familiar face in the squad.
"It'll be good. He's someone I know and am used to playing with. Playing fullback has taught me to always support him," McClintock said.
Burns added: "I know a few of the boys I played Country under 16s with, about five others which will be handy."
Burns is already looking at his next move after the tour with a newly-signed manager speaking to a number of NRL club's about his future.
"I signed a manager about a month ago. He's spoken to about four clubs about me.
"If I had to go anywhere it would probably be Canberra because it is close to home. It is only two hours if I want to come home for the weekend to see friends or family instead of four."
Burns had a pre-season stint at St George Illawarra earlier this year but a dispute over a contract clearance scuttled that move. He has since returned to Cowra to play his debut season in premier league despite still being eligible for under 18s.
McClintock, who will travel overseas for the first time, said he was nervous and excited about the prospect of playing football overseas.
The NSW Country under 18s will play their second game on Thursday against the Tongan under 18s side before returning to Australia on Friday.
Cowra's Peter McDonald is the manager of the side. |

NORTHS WIN AT BEAR PARK
Story & Photo By : Steve Little North Sydney Bears
The North Sydney Bears have beaten the Cronulla Sharks for the 2nd time this season as they journey back on the path to the top eight.
“It was a better team effort” said Coach Wayne Lambkin after the Bears held the Sharks to only 1 try a half winning 31-12. “While there’s room for improvement everyone worked together, there was more consistency and repeat sets” Claimed the happy Coach, expressing the view there was no better time than now for the boys to come into form.
Norths scored first when Beau Champion put Yileen Gordon through. Fifteen minutes later Eddy Pettybourne broke through the middle and scored. Cronulla finally hit back a few minutes later before Joe Williams kicked a field goal to extend Norths lead 13-6.
Cronulla narrowed the gap to 1 point when they scored just after halftime. But the Bears Beau Champion off loaded to Jardine Bobongie to return score. Ben Lowe put his mark on the match when he intercepted and regained the ball and passed out to Troy Boston who raced 40m to score. Norths final points came from a grubber kick by Joe Williams for Luke Grant to score. Joe Williams was successful with all 5 conversions.
It was a strong performance overall by the Bears after a string of losses. For the most part North Sydney’s defence was solid as a house. In attack (in addition to 5 converted tries) the Bears came close to scoring a number of times only to be disallowed..
Joe Falemaka was a standout in the forward department with some charging runs. Eddie Pettybourne and Luke Grant were also running hard and strong. Joe Williams was an integral part of the Bears attack and had his best kicking boot on to help improve the Bears for and against.
The second half saw a great performance from full back Reece Simmonds. Fetuli Talanoa was very hard for the Sharks defense to put down, running strong from dummy half and there was a mighty game from lock Jardine Bobongie who fought every tackle and every run up. Ben Lowe showed promise in his first hit out and promoted Jersey Flegg player Greg Nicholls got his first win of the season and an “improving every game” comment from the Coach.
NORTH SYDNEY 31 (Yileen Gordon, Eddy Pettybourne, Jardine Bobongie, Troy Boston, Luke Grant tries; Joe Williams 5 goals from 5, Joe Williams 1 field goal) defeated CRONULLA-SUTHERLAND 12 (6 tries 5 goals 1 field goal) Half time North Sydney 13-6.
In Jersey Flegg Norths went down 32-6 to top placed Penrith in a match that was closer than the score line indicated.
The first half was a very close battle. Norths scored first through Brent Millar as Mohammed Alhaje kicked a great conversion from the sideline. Norths held the six-nil lead for 10 minutes before Penrith were able to draw level with a 6-pointer as the teams went to the break 6-all.
In the second half Penrith were able to take the lead when they scored twice in 5 minutes. The score remained at 16-6 until the final 10 when Penrith scored another 3 tries handing the Panthers a flattering 32-6 score.
The Bears forwards shined in the face of their top competition. John Kaifoto, Chris Farrell, Brad Lupi and Junior Meatoga were fantastic. Mitch Williams put in another fine performance. Jake Foster, Brent Millar and Mohammed Alhaje gave it their all in attack and Anthony Delaivuna, injured in the second half was sorely missed.
PENRITH 32 (6 tries, 4 goals) defeated NORTH SYDNEY 6 (Brent Millar try, Mohammed Alhaje 1 goal from 1) Half time 6 all.
This weekend The Bears Premier League take on Newcastle at Energy Australia Stadium at 5:30 p.m. on Friday 29th June. The North Sydney Jersey Flegg side take on Newcastle at Harker Oval, Hobart Road, New Lambton at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday 30th June.. Group 11's Lionel O'Malley comes to help Hayden Hodge stop the progress of Maitland's Jacob McKendry in their under-15s trial on Sunday. |
JUNIOR TEAMS SET TO IMPRESS AT COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Story By : Barry Hildebrandt
Group 11 under 15s and 16s are primed for a 'big show' in the Southern NSW Country Championships, according to 15s coach Neil Millgate.
On Sunday in Dubbo, both sides finalised their preparations with full scale hi touts against Maitland.
Millgate's 15s finished 24-all with the visitors while the Sean Barker coached under 16s - including Wellington's Richard Peckham - looked good, beating Maitland 24-14 in the main game.
Group 11 will take their two sides to Cootamundra for the Southern Championships on the weekend of June 16-17.
Millgate said while his 15s shared the points with four tries each, his boys showed enough to suggest they will be in with a chance at Cootamundra.
"We're in with a big show, it was a very impressive trial," Millgate said.
"We put them under a lot of pressure and forced mistakes in the first 30 minutes to lead 16-0 just before the break when Maitland scored, then got back into it again and led clearly before they got over for two late tries.
"The biggest thing for us was all 20 players in the squad got a run and our bench players were impressive when asked to perform.
"The back rowers led by Riley Cape, Oliver Scott and Matt Langby worked non-stop while our size in the front-row through Dylan Hill and Mathew Park will be to our advantage.
"In the backs, the halves Blake Baxter and Josh Merritt were always looking for breaks and created room to move for the centres (Brad Spencer and Ken Everson).
"In the main, I think we've got all bases covered."
Outstanding Wellington five-eighth Richard Peckham had a great game for Group 11 under 16s with two tries and he showed why he was considered good enough to play for the Australian Indigenous under 16s against New Zealand Maoris recently.
"Richard was very good for us," Neil Millgate said.
"He's got a lot going for him and we're really looking forward to him leading the way at Cootamundra."
And it wasn't only the Group 11 coaching staff and spectators who were impressed with the local sides, with Cronulla Sharks talent scouts keen to spot a player who would be of interest in the long term.
Under 15s:
GROUP 11 24 (Josh Merritt 2, Jake Stoneham, Mathew Langby tries, Merritt 3, Blake Baxter goals) drew with MAITLAND 24 (Trent Thew 3, Thomas Rumbel tries, Mitch Cullen 4 goals).
Under 16s:
GROUP 11 24 (Richard Peckham 2, James Augustin, Zac Redfern tries, Peckham 4 goals) def MAITLAND 14 (Hayden Crouch, Jay Stevens, Brodie Sauter tries, Taylor Mathews goal). |

BRAD MAKES NSW COUNTRY
Story By :
This is a fantastic result for a young player who has a future in the sport and is one of Parkes' most talented young footballers after being selected in the Australian Merit under 15s in 2005.
Brad has made this team as a 16 year old (17 in November) and still has another year left in the under 18s which is a testament to his talent and reputation in the game in country NSW.
Brad is the son of Rob and Sonya Graham, and is also contracted to NRL team Parramatta when he finishes school at the end of 2008.
A second rower, Brad is a punishing front-on defender who is also blessed with excellent speed and great footwork.
He is a major part of Jock Colley's Parkes under 18 side that will be a major contender for the Group 11 premiership this year.
Brad was unfortunate to miss selection in the NSW under 17s team last week in Sydney and the Parkes Rugby League Football Club congratulates him on this wonderful achievement.
He is the latest NSW Country representative for Parkes after Luke Jones represented the seniors back in 1997. |
FROM BALMAIN TO BEARS, TEEN CENTRE HITTING IT OFF
Story By : Grant Robertson
GROUP 4 ; NORTH Tamworth centre Kye Howarth was a Balmain Tiger just a few weeks ago but is back in Bears colours and making an impact in Group 4.
The 18-year-old scored four tries in Sunday's 72-12 win over Gunnedah and polled three best and fairest points for his effort.
Despite the big scoreline it was the North defence that impressed and allowed the likes of Josh Laurie and Nathan Handley to create opportunities for centres Howarth and Jamie Mitchell.
"Our defence was good," Howarth said.
"It was probably the best defence we've had all year.
"Our attack was good too in the second half.
"Our halves did a good job getting the ball out for us."
Howarth joined the Tigers for this year's SG Ball competition in Sydney and professional coaching and training has helped his game.
"It was good," he said.
"You learn a lot.
"The footy is different but it's good experience.
"You have to eat right and train right.
"We went all right, finished 10th and missed out on the finals.
"We had a fairly good side.
"I played a bit of wing and a bit of centre but I don't know, I might slow down a bit so I might end up playing in the second row."
He is likely to rejoin the Wests Tigers club in 2008 when the Toyota Cup, the new Under 20 national competition, kicks off.
Until then he will be mixing it with the hardened seniors of Group 4.
"This year is about getting some experience," he said.
"The hits are a lot harder playing against adults than in the Under 18s against guys my age.
"Hopefully I'll go back down at the end of this year.
"This year I just want to play good footy and help North get to the finals."
North captain-coach Matt Parsons said he was impressed with Howarth and is happy to help his development in any we he can.
"He could still be playing Under 18s," Parsons said.
"He's a very good player and he's got a good attitude and is a good listener so he'll go a fair way I think.
"Whether he plays centre or backrow is up to where he wants his game to develop.
"We've spoken about playing second row but we've got a few players there who are doing a good job and they would have scored four tries today."
Parsons also picked up a best and fairest point in his return to the field on Sunday while Nathan Handley was awarded two points for his efforts at five-eighth. |
