WOODBRIDGE CUP UNDER 18'S TO RETURN
Story By : Grenfell Record
Woodbridge Cup has sent out a memo asking for an expression of interest for a u17’s or u18’s sides to field teams under the banner of the Woodbridge cup.
There has been a fair bit of interest already and this is very promising.
This would be an easier transition going from a u16’s competition to a under 17’s or 18’s competition rather than leaving town or going into Senior League to early.
Grenfell has been asked to see if there is a chance we can get a team together.
Grenfell has fielded sides in this competition and has had great success in this format.
We need to hear from interested players, parents and anyone that would like to get involved.
This is a good opportunity to keep our younger players that want to stay involved in Rugby League.
Grenfell has lost lots of there younger players over the years as they are going on to play for other towns and this would be a great chance to keep our younger players playing the game they love for their home town.
If you are interested or know some one that would be please contact Garry Hewen on 6343 1935 or 0419 231 904 or Stephen Obyrne on 6343 2322 or 6343 1995 or 0439 660 344.
The earlier that we hear from you the sooner we can get the information back to Woodbridge Cup. |

2008 NSWRL ACADEMY YOUNG ACHIEVERS TOUR OF PNG
TOUR DIARY & TeamPhoto By : NSWRL ACADEMY
September 26 – Off and Running
For many of the far west boys the trip actually began with the journey from the outskirts of NSW down to the Academy in Sydney.
Right from the start, the lads learnt the value of a passport with one unfortunate boy being unable to tour after the mysterious disappearance of this vital document.
For most of the group, this would be their first trip on an airplane, let alone the first time out of the country.
By 10.00 am they had all been “kitted up” and were ready for the first official training run under sunny skies at Narrabeen. Coach Wright lectured and ran the tam for an hour and a half and was only slightly satisfied with the effort – obviously a tough man to please!
A quick “tub” and a BBQ lunch in the Academy picnic grounds saw the boys nourished for the bus ride to the Airport.
A detour over the Harbour Bridge gave many first timers a glimpse of Sydney. It was smooth sailing onto Virgin Flight DJ247 even though Dylan looked in need of a new pair of underwear.
I guess preflight nerves had kicked in.
After a largely uneventful flight, we hit the streets of Brisbane.
Brisbane traffic is a joke. A 5km drive to the hotel took an hour! None the less, by 7.00pm we were all checked in for the night. The boys devoured 25 pizzas for dinner and topped it off with gallons of soft drink and 36 Magnum ice-creams.
An early start awaited in the morning.
SEPTEMBER 27 – THE HARD YARDS
The sound of big Mick Barlow pounding the corridors and bellowing instructions is scary.
At 5.30 in the morning it’s downright terrifying. The boys were hounded out of bed and hustled down to breakfast. Only problem was that breakfast didn’t get served until 7.30.
Maccas at the airport sufficed: and boy these kids can eat! After going through the rigmarole of check-ins, customs, (where big Brian was screened as a terror suspect), security and immigration, and the mandatory delays due to air traffic, APNG flight CG0201 left the tarmac on route to Port Moresby.
The real adventure was about to begin.
At Jacksons Airport the glass doors slid open to reveal 1000’s of hysterical men women and children cheering and waving. A traditional dance group performed a war cry and the crowd surged just to touch our boys. TK needed a change of underwear.
Most of the boys came close to freezing on the spot. Welcome to PNG! As we fought our way through the crowd and onto the bus, the crowd again went crazy.
The Australian PM’s XIII had arrived. Spectacular driving from our man “Gus” got us through the mob and onto the highway. Hundreds of kids chased the bus hoping to score a gift from the Young Achievers. Some succeeded.
Travelling to the Comfort Inn was a unique experience. Every person on the streets waved and cheered. Cars and busses honked and local faces beamed. Emotions on our bus were extreme. Some were scared, some were on adrenalin high, and all of us knew that we were in another world.
After check-in we met our tour guide Ripa and the tour organizer Iffy. Col decided on a training run at a nearby oval to blow out the cobwebs.
The ground was as hard as concrete and riddled with pot holes. It took no time at all for around 500 locals to turn up and watch.
After some skills work, the local kids joined in for a game of touch with us. This was the ice breaker that the boys needed. Our kids realized that the local people meant us no harm, and only wanted to see, touch and talk to future NRL stars.
This country is Rugby League mad, and we were seen as missionaries for the game.
SEPTEMBER 28 – THE FIRST SCRUM
Heading out of Moresby and along the southern coast to the traditional village of Boera gave us a chance to see a piece of this fascinating country. Turning off the main highway, we were greeted by a dirt track that wound down a steep mountain to the coastal village.
Most of the “shanty” type houses were built on stilts and sat in the ocean. The people had erected a stage specially for us to mark the visit. 5000 people live here and all were on hand for our official reception.
Again traditional dancers’ performed for us and the village chief welcomed us. The lads were treated like rock stars and tucked into a lunch of sandwiches and local fruits. We were joined on stage by the Southern Zone Schoolboys team that we were to play on Tuesday.
A walk through the village to the playing field saw Stuart get mobbed while trying to hand out some stickers.
A bag of lollies caused a full on riot.
As Henry warmed the boys up for a training run, it was suggested that we combine the session with the Southern Zone team. The national broadcaster EMTV was on hand and filed a story for the news on that night.
Both teams did some skills work together, and finished with a game of touch that got more and more physical as the game went on.
Each of our kids presented the Southern Zone kids with a gift, while officials handed out memento’s to the grateful local youngsters. Our time in Boera was brilliant.
For many, the highlight of the trip was about to begin. An afternoon training run with the PM’s XIII awaited. At Lloyd Robson oval, Aussie coach Mal Meninga greeted us, and allowed the boys time to shake hands and meet the NRL stars.
After the formalities, we had an opposed session with them, the stand out player for us being big Brian who put a huge shoulder charge on Scott Prince – something he will always remember.
An impromptu autograph session followed and a trip back to the hotel to prepare for the evening festivities.
We bussed our way to Ela Beach Tafe College, seeing the Harbour and city for the first time at night. Again the streets were full of people waving and cheering the boys.
A fantastic night was had by all, with our hosts providing a traditional bamboo pipe band and choir, traditional dancers’ and speeches by the winners of the local young King and Queen competitions who promoted the theme of our tour – stopping violence and promoting safe sex.
A BBQ feast was provided for all including the PNG under 16 Schoolboys team. After dinner, most boys danced to local music, with the standout performer being our big front rower Sam.
It was terrific to see both teams form a Congo line and dance around the premises. It showed me that the game of Rugby League had bonded together two groups of young men from completely different cultures, even though they would be fierce rivals the next day.
SEPTEMBER 28 – BATTLES ON (AND OFF) THE FIELD
Although the match was still hours away, you could sense the nerves and tension in our camp. We had been told that the ground was sold out and most fans were inside the ground by 9.00am meaning that we would play in front of a full house.
Our squad, the majority of who are based in the far west of NSW, had never seen so many people in such a small place.
Most were strapped, rubbed and ready to go well before our 1.00pm kick off. Pulling out of the hotel for the 500 meter drive to the ground was an unbelievable experience, and a sign of things to come.
Screaming, cheering, passion. Seas of colour. I don’t know how Gus managed to get the bus into the ground. People up trees, people on light poles, people everywhere.
WELCOME TO RUGBY LEAGUE IN PNG!
The boys received a rousing reception upon entering the playing field.
Captain Jordan Hay led from the front, ripping in defense and charging in attack. Our two front rowers Norbert Horvath and Sam Abbott ably supported and Sam was rewarded with a try early in the game. I remember thinking that we might be too strong for the PNG national Under 16 schoolboy’s team.
How wrong I was. The PNG lads play the game with two key ingredients; they fear nothing and play the game with exceptional speed and flamboyance.
Despite a solo long range try to Tia Kilifi (who managed to knock himself out while grounding the ball) our defenses struggled to contain the PNG side, and we walked off at half time down 22 – 10.
Coach Wright implored the team to slow the play the ball while his assistant Noel, stressed the importance of our marker play. Tries to Horvath and Ritchie bridged the gap to 26 – 22 and we were back in the game.
SILLY ERRORS AND SOME “WHITE LINE FEVER”
cost us dearly and two late tries to PNG saw the score blow out to 34 – 22 at full time.
Man of the Match honors went to Hay, while Horvath was judged best forward and Alex Ronayne best back.
Lack of seating meant the boys had to sit on the sideline for the main game. Some were lucky enough to sit on the Australian team’s bench and actually joined in with the half time talk from Coach Mal Meninga. In an entertaining match the Prime Ministers XIII proved a shade stronger than the Kumuls winning 52 – 30.
Then the fun began.
With the Aussies attempting to set off on a lap of honor, and our squad standing on the sidelines, a section of the crowd braved the barbed and razor wired fencing to get onto the field.
As the police chased the intruders with sticks and PVC piping for weapons, sections down the other end of the field decided to do the same. Within an instant 1000’s of locals had descended upon the pitch in an attempt to touch and shake hands with their NRL heroes and maybe score a souvenir.
In an effort to restore some order, the sounds of AK47 rifles and Glock pistols rang out overhead. People scattered, but quickly regrouped to yet again surge.
For all the excitement, none of our kids were worried.
Eventually, (some 45 minutes later), some kind of order was restored.
The locals sat on the field, forming a ring around both touring parties. Josh Morris decided to hurl his boots into the crowd, creating a massive scrum, while Nathan Hindmarsh casually walked through the masses and returned with arms laden with gifts from adoring locals.
We waited for the Aussies to leave before boarding our bus and heading off.
Our chaperone Ripa advised against heading straight to our hotel as the locals would again swarm. We drove the streets for a while before heading to a local supermarket where the boys devoured biscuits, chocolates and ice creams. After two hours waiting, we returned to the Comfort Inn for a swim and BBQ dinner.
Some of the lads had made friends with the family living opposite the hotel, with AJ and Shannon catching the eye of some young ladies. We got the boys to bed at around 11.00, bringing an end to a day that none of us will ever forget.
29TH SEPTEMBER – THE RECOVERY SESSION
Most of the boys were carrying bumps, scratches and bruises from the game.
At 6.30 that morning management had decided on a pool session to try and ease some of the pain. After breakfast, it was back on the bus for a ride to Bomana War Cemetery.
There are some 3700 head stones in this peaceful place. We were astounded to learn the youngest of the Australians resting here was only sixteen. Many of the graves are simply marked ‘a soldier of the war’. All agreed that this part of our tour was a unique experience and thoroughly worthwhile. An hour and a half later we were on our way to
Gaire March Girls Beach Resort.
For the first time on tour it was time to relax. Some had a swim in the Coral Sea, while others simply sat around and chattered. After lunch, an impromptu game of beach touch football got underway with some of the boys from the Southern Zone team that we were to play on Tuesday. A few local kids also joined in.
The game quickly became more physical, with many a player being crash tackled into the cool waters - boys just being boys.
An hour after departing Gaire we were back in Moresby and made detour to a local street craft market. Situated opposite the Holiday Inn, the boys were struck by the colour and beauty of the canvas artworks and carved timbers.
Many made purchases unaware that bartering was part of this markets culture. A good rule of thumb was to offer a fifth of the marked price and continue from there.
Some boys even managed to pay for goods with gear marked with the NRL logo.
Arriving home at 7.00pm, it was straight to dinner and preparations for the game ahead. Again, some lads decided that chatting with friendly locals outside the main gate was more appealing than going to bed. “Stumps” were called by eleven and lights went out.
30TH SEPTEMBER – THE BIG HIT
The previous night’s retail therapy had only increased our hunger for more. With a 3.00pm kick off, and plenty of time to kill, we boarded the bus in hope of spending more Kina. Gus first took us to a warehouse that was full of unique carvings and traditional weaponry.
Most of us picked up a bargain before heading to the street market in the centre of Boroko. This place was crazy. People everywhere selling a wide range of products including clothing, jewellery, and local souvenirs’.
The boys loved the experience with most returning with bags full of gifts for those back in Oz, and tellingly, empty wallets.
Big Sam was one of the first to enter room 3 – the medical room – signifying the start of match preparations. Most boys were still sore from Sunday’s game and most had the scars and scratches to prove it. Nathan and Henry worked overtime with massage oil flowing freely.
By 2.45 we were back at Lloyd Robson oval and ready to take on the Southern Zone.
Again the lads started well leading 6 – 0 after 10 minutes. The Southern Zone team played enterprising football shifting the pill at every opportunity, and throwing eager bodies into defense. Some slack marker play and a one on one miss just before half time saw the PNG team lead 12 – 6 at the break.
You could tell at half time that we were struggling with the 32 degree heat and the pace of the locals.
We started the second half strongly, and a quick shift of the ball saw Alex score out wide to get us back to 12 – 10. The game turned into an arm wrestle for the next 20 minutes with both teams butchering scoring opportunities.
Down to just 13 fit players and with fatigue setting in, the locals posted a try in the dying stages to take the match 18 – 10.
The young achievers were best served by man of the match Raymond Ebsworth, best forward Sam Abbott and crowd favourite “AJ” Mylecharne who received the best back award.
After the game it was onward to the Eli Beach Tafe where again we were treated to a pig on the spit roast and all the trimmings. Joined by the Southern Zone team, the boys partied the night away to the beats of the Bamboo band and traditional dancers, while the touring staff mingled with the local people over a can of “SP” lager.
A great time was had by all on this our last night on tour.
1ST OCTOBER – THE FINAL WHISTLE
With bags packed and the last of our gifts given, it was time to head home.
At 8.30am we boarded the bus for the airport. Along the way were amazed to receive wild cheering and high fives from the fanatical locals. Iffy, Gus and Ripa accompanied us all the way to the immigration gates, before offering us a sad farewell.
The return flight to Brisbane was somber with the majority of the team taking the opportunity to catch up on some much needed sleep. A train trip to Brisbane’s domestic terminal and the short flight back to Sydney brought the trip to an end at 8.00pm that night.
The tour was over, but the memories will last forever.
GRATITUDES
A tour of this magnitude and uniqueness cannot go ahead without the hard work and determination of a number of people. To that end the NSW Under 16’s Young Achievers would like to thank Iffysoe Segeyaro who arranged our tour itinerary while in PNG, Ripa Kalamo who acted as our chaperone and team “mother”, and Gus the Bus
driver who got us to where we needed to be with no trouble at all.
Thanks also go to Col, Mick, John and the crew from the Far West Academy who raised funds and mentored many of the touring team.
Finally a big thank you to Kristen, Tom and all the staff at the NSWRL and the Academy who chipped in with tour logistics and much needed advice about PNG, your assistance was greatly appreciated.
THE 2008 NSWRL ACADEMY YOUNG ACHIEVERS WERE :
1. RAYMOND EBSWORTH – Smooth running fullback who saved many tries with excellent covering one on one tackles.
2. ADAM LOUIE – Safe as houses on the flank who made the most of limited opportunities with the ball.
3. CHRIS WORLAND – A rangy centre and strong in defense. We sorely missed him in game two after circumming to a knee injury.
4. ALEX RONAYNE – Tough running centre who excelled in game 1. Alex has a future in this game.
5. AJ MYLECHARANE – This man is going places both on and off the field. The locals (mainly female) loved his long blonde locks and his fearless charges.
6. VIAPUNA TIA KILIFI – “Yapoon” recovered from concussion in game 1 to star in game 2. Has all the skills and a bright future.
7. JACOB NEIL – Solid halfback in the Tommy Raudonikis mould. Guided the troops well and played with plenty of emotion.
8. SAMUEL ABBOTT – Big Sam never stopped hitting the ball up and was rewarded with a try against PNG. Keep working on that fitness “unit”.
9. DYLAN SMITH – Crafty out of dummy half and nonstop in defense. Improved immensely as the tour went on.
10. NORBERT HORVATH – The find of the tour. Plays above his weight with no fear. Was the only man to play the full 60 minutes in game two.
11. JORDAN HAY – The tour captain could not be faulted. Plays with more passion than most and puts his heart into every play. Well done skipper.
12. SHANNON MORRISON – Not the biggest forward in the world but plays with plenty of ticker. Great kid who will improve from this experience.
13. JARRAD LINTON – HARLAND – Played well in the tour opener before a head clash with a team mate knocked him senseless.
14. LUKE RITCHIE – Performed well off the bench showing potential in attack and defense. Sparked the team when he played in the halves.
15. NELSON SHARPLEY – Filled in admirably at hooker and bobbed up all over the field. The team loved having him around.
16. TYRONE KELLY – TK was electric in attack and safe as a bank in D. However he struggled on the plane being a first time flyer and was close to using the vomit bag on a number of occasions.
17. BRIAN MORGAN – Big Bri was loved by all. Crowds cheered his huge shoulder charges and hitups from taps. Needs some fitness work!
18. ZAC CRONIN – The ‘work experience kid’ received a late call up and let no one down with his efforts on the field. It was a pleasure to have him around.
COL WRIGHT (Coach) – Rough diamond who took every scenario in his stride. No doubt about his commitment and loyalty to “his” boys and football in the “Far
West”.
NOEL DONOHOE – The tour veteran excelled with his defensive work on the boys and doubled as the official tour photographer.
MICK BARLOW (Manager) – Recovered from a heart scare to look after everyone on tour. This man has more Rugby League knowledge in his little toe than most gain in a
lifetime.
HENRY LOUIE (Trainer) – Despite being the only person I know that won’t eat pizza, Henry was a fine tourist and has the hardest massage in NSW.
JOHN HATLEY (Medical Trainer) – Loved by the kids and impressed all with his work ethic. His experience was missed in our second game due to work commitments.
NATHAN GAINSFORD (Physiotherapist) – Did a fantastic job getting kids on the field. Injuries hit us hard, but Nath worked tirelessly with strapping, liniment and Betadine to
keep them going. Loves a beer!
STUART STANTON (Tour Manager) – Hardly lifted a finger on tour, but is happy to report that the behavior and respect shown by all was outstanding. Well done boys! |

JUNIOR SHARKS SQUADS ANNOUNCED
Story By : Sharks
The Sharks have announced train-on squads for the 2009 Toyota Cup, SG Ball and Harold Matthews Cup competitions.
The three respective squads will come together for an orientation meeting in November before commencing pre-season training shortly after.
After fielding a relatively young side in 2008, the Sharks Toyota Cup under-20’s will welcome back a number of last year’s team in 2009, including the likes of exciting youngsters Ben Orcher, Jayson Bukuya, Blake Ferguson and Nathan Stapleton along with last years Toyota Cup player of the year Jack Bosden.
The Toyota Cup Sharks will this year be coached by Joe Grima, with the start of their competition to coincide with round one of the NRL on the weekend of March 13-16, 2008.
A number of Toyota Cup players will train full time during pre-season with Ricky Stuart and the Sharks NRL squad.
As for the under-18 SG Ball and under-16 Matthews Cup Sharks, training will be on in earnest prior to the Christmas period, beginning November 12, with their seasons kicking off on February 21.
Both junior representative squads at this stage have extended rosters, with the naming of final teams to be delayed until closer to the start of the 2009 competitions.
Tony Herman will be in charge of the SG Ball, with Kevin Farquhar and Colin Ward, the former St George and Penrith NRL player, now a Sutherland Shire local with young boys playing for Gymea, his assistant coaches.
Dave Howlett, who overseas the rugby league program at Endeavour Sports High School, returns as coach of the 2009 Sharks Matthews Cup team. He will be assisted by Steve Holz from Engadine and Shane Walker, an ex-Tigers NRL player now involved with the De La Salle club.
Squad lists for the three teams are as follows : CHECK 'EM OUT HERE |

PLAYERS SOUGHT FOR RUGBY LEAGUE ACADEMY PROGRAM
Story By :
Following a successful first year the Country Rugby League (CRL) and the Far West Academy of Sport (FWAS) are calling for rugby league players to attend the CRL Far West Rugby League Academy program trials.
The trials will be held in Warren on Sunday October 19 starting at 9.30am. They are open to all rugby league players who turn 14 - 18 years in 2009. An Academy Squad (16 - 18 years) and a Development Squad (14 - 16 years) will be selected from the trials.
About 40 athletes will be chosen in total. The CRL and FWAS are strongly encouraging all rugby league players to attend.
“We want to see as many players as possible come along and try out - we’re hoping there’s some great, undiscovered talent out here,” FWAS Development Officer, Matthew Thompson said.
“It’s a great day, it’s free and you just never know where it could lead, so we’re encouraging everyone to just have a go.”
Athletes from last year’s program were selected in the NSW Country U16’s side and the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Rugby League program, as well as attracting interest from NRL clubs.
Selected players will receive some of the most modern and professional coaching programs available and have access to CRL mainstream programs and possible selection in elite teams.
Athletes will also have the opportunity to play in the Nyngan Easter Rugby League Challenge and participate in development tours.
CRL Western Development Manager and Head Coach, Steve McLellan, is looking forward to the trials and a continued relationship with the FWAS.
“From our development work in the Far West I believe there are some very talented athletes and I encourage them to attend as it will only make them better players,” said Mr McLellan.
“The opportunities are there for athletes if they are willing to take up the challenge and be part of the Academy.
“We are looking forward to continuing to work with the FWAS in providing opportunities for talented rugby league players in the Far West and nurturing the next generation of elite players.”

PUP’S GRAND FINAL FINISH
Story & Photo By :
THE Redbank Power Singleton Junior Rugby League completed one of its most successful seasons on and off the field in 2008.
Grand finals in the Maitland and Newcastle Schoolboys competitions were completed late last month with Singleton adding two more premierships to the two already secured in Group 21 earlier (see match reports below).
Looking back at the season that was and the highlights were no doubt the introduction of an Under 6 competition in Group 21 for the very first time, instigated by the Singleton club. Registrations for the season jumped a massive 25% from 262 to 329, made up of 20 teams playing in three different competitions.
The utilisation of floodlighting at Cook Park for the first time was a hit and the makeover of the amenities building following the 2007 floods all took tremendous effort from the ‘usual suspects’ that give enormous time and energy to the sport of junior rugby league. The action doesn’t stop there though with an underground watering system set to be installed on the main field this month ready for next season.
But the biggest occasion will be the Singleton Junior Rugby Leagues 30th Anniversary dinner that will be held at Club Singleton on Saturday October 18.
Junior League has a history going back to 1953 when the Wanderers, Hunters, Panthers and Kiwis fought out a local competition. This was followed by the period when the sport was governed by the PCYC from 1966 to 1977. The current club was established in 1978 and remains in the same capacity today.
Celebrations were intended to be a low key affair however there is strong interest to stage a dinner function and it is now gathering momentum. The highlight of the celebration will be the naming of a 30th Anniversary team made up of former pup’s who cut their teeth as a Singleton Junior before their pre-eminent rise in the game.
The club would also like to hear from former players, parents, officials and supporters who have items of interest for a memorabilia exhibition on the night as well. Anyone with photo’s, pennants, articles or clothing is welcome to contribute by contacting Darren Ward on 0419 235 423.
Tickets go on sale next week at Club Singleton and we hope your presence can make it a night to remember and pay tribute to the select 30th anniversary team as well as take in a bit of history of junior league in Singleton.
Finally, the Redbank Power Singleton Junior Rugby League extends its best wishes to our senior counterparts in all three grades this Sunday at Resco Park, in the Group 21 Grand final. It will be massive!
Westrac Under 16(2) - played their much anticipated grand final against Beresfield / Thornton at Cook Park a fortnight ago. Despite being quiet in the shed before the game the team were fired up for a big one. They came into the game undefeated and were determined to remain that way.
Again the visitors started the game strongly, using their size to break through Singleton’s line on a number of occasions. Singleton took a while to get into their style of playing but once they did there was no looking back.
Kerrod Holland again sent great balls to players on the burst, allowing them to break Bero’s line again and again. This started wearing their big forwards out.
Singleton re-gathered after half time, determined not to let the opposition back into the game. Each Singleton player was determined to come away with the premiership and this showed in every tackle and every attacking raid on the opposition’s line.
Mat Law put the game out of Thornton Beresfield’s reach with the last of his four (4) tries.
When the hooter sounded it was all a bit surreal, the boys had achieved something they had worked hard for over many years. It was a well deserved win as the team has been undefeated all year.
The final score was 38 - 16 with tries to Mat Law (4), Scott Griffiths, Dale Watson and Pierce Murray. Scott Griffiths kicked five goals. Player of the Grand Final was awarded to Mat Law.
Super effort guys! Thank you to all the parents who, for the three years that I have had the boys, have been so supportive. Thanks also to Wade and Albert, who have worked so tirelessly this year to prepare the team and to Rod, Dave and Paul for your assistance with first aid and doing the book for us each week.
It certainly has been a team effort! (Sue Delforce – Coach)
Pirtek Under 14(2) - showed determination and character to win a close Grand Final against the previously undefeated Scone side. Singleton scored first through Jordan Brown after having the best of the field possession to lead 6 – 0.
Scone then gained some momentum and scored three tries in succession and took the lead by eight points. Scone were then attacking the Singleton line just before half time when a charge down by Jack Willis was regathered and a run away try to Singleton by Lain Franks put the half time score at 10 – 14.
Singleton started the second half in the same way they finished the first with some excellent defence especially from our second rowers Sam Smith and Ryan Fletcher. The next points came from a well weighted kick from Jordan Watson that was pounced upon by Lain Franks who scored his second for the day.
Not long after this Nathan Brock split the defence in half and scored the fourth try for Singleton. Scone didn’t give up and scored a retaliation try to have the scores at 20 – 18. The next five minutes were very tense and worthy of a Grand Final with Scone attacking Singleton’s line.
The brilliant defence from Singleton was able to hold Scone out. When the final siren sounded Singleton were the winners 20 points to 18. Jack Willis kicked 2 from 4 in windy conditions which proved to be the difference in game where four tries were scored by both teams.
Congratulations must go to the boys for a very gutsy effort and they deserve every bit of it for the hard work they put in during the year. Well done!
Singleton RSC Under 15(5) – were narrowly beaten by Nelson Bay 24 – 12 in their Grand-Final. All the players can be very proud of their efforts.
Pirtek Under 12(3) – were no match for a pumped up Dungog. Injuries to key players didn’t help Singleton’s cause but again they can be proud of a great season nonetheless. Final score was 34 – 0.
Don’t forget Presentation day is on Sunday October 19 at the Singleton Public School Auditorium. Every player receives a trophy or reward and we look forward to seeing you there, starts at 10.00am for Under 6 to Under 11, 11.30am for Under 12 to Under 16.

UNDER 11S BOOK GRAND FINAL BERTH
Story & Photo By :
With Tumut putting on the cold weather for the first round of the finals, the Junee teams worked hard with some great results.
The under 11s had a win against Temora, taking them straight into the grand final for 2008.
Meanwhile, Junee under 14s came up against Tumut in the qualifying round of the finals but went down 14-0.
They will have to work very hard this week at training if they want to take the win against Gundagai to make the grand final.
The under 10s played in the elimination rounds on the weekend against Tumut and took the win 16-10.
They worked very well together and played great footy with Joel Kelly, Jake Holt, Bailey Whitemore all scoring one try each and Adain Sweeney and Joel Kelly scoring goals.
The boys now take on Harden in the second semi final.
The under 13s also played well in the elimination rounds against Tumut but couldn’t get the win, losing 28-20.
Hamish Dunbar was the best on field making some great tackles.
The 15s boys held their own in what was their last game of football for the Junee Junior Diesels.
In a very physical game the boys played Temora and Jackson Metcalfe yet again led the charge while Luke Clarke made some great tackles along with Scott Fitzgerald who was everywhere in defence. |

DEVOLOPMENT GAMES END WITH SOME GR8 FOOTY
Story & Photo By :
After a very busy school holiday Schedule the Sharks played their final development games against the mighty Balmain Tigers.
Today we saw 3 very good games of junior rugby league between these two sides and all 3 games were played with fantastic spirit, all the players respected one another which allow the footy move around the paddock with out interruption.
The Tigers under 13's are one HOT little footy side, they run the ball hard, back each other to the hilt and seem to be able to pass the ball in most tackles.
They like to score a few tries too with 3 players scoring doubles and a dead eye kicker who booted 6 from 6 before he was sacked to give someone else a go.
These slick little Tigers lead 0 - 34 at half time and went on with the job in the second half to beat the Sharks 8 - 44, young Sharks winger Ben Issa ran in two good second half tries.
The score reflex the effort the Cronulla boys put in in the second half restricting the Tigers to just 10 points, it was a fine display of footy by these little Tigers and all at the ground know the Sharks tried very hard.
The Sharks under 14's are a very well coached outfit, they play to their game plan and do a mighty jobs of sticking to it.
They run good angles, with players backing each other up in both attack and in D.
Young Robbie Nathan came off the field with a broken nose, it was bent over to the right and looked painful, good luck Robbie, in a few weeks she'll be right for a good pick. |
TIGERS COMING TO PROWL
The Balmain Tigers are coming to town with their Development squads to take on the mighty Sharks.
The Games begin with the Under 13's which will kick off at 10:00 am followed by the U14's, u 15's and then the under 17's.
So if you get the opportunity to have a sickie, come and support the local juniors tame the Tigers. |

SHARKS GET IT ON WITH BULLDOGS
Story & Photo'S By :
The Cronulla Junior League hosted another great day of junior rugby league at Endeavour Fields today with the Canterbury Bulldogs sending 4 of their Development squads for four games of footy.
The under 13's were scheduled to play against a Bulldogs under 14's side, but that wasn't on so the Sharks U 14's other team took them on.
Unfortunately the Doggies were too strong in defence winning a very close game 6 - 10. Youngster Robbie Lightfoot ran in the local boyz only try, but well done to both teams.
Yousef Chosn, Johnny Wassif crossed for the visitors while Troy English kicked 1 outta 2.
In the other under 14's game the Bulldogs were again too good for the local boys, running away with the game in the second half to win 10 - 30.
Scorers : Sharks : Eddie Hickenburk 2 tries, Taylor Garrett 1 goal
Bulldogs : Chris Assad, Hassan Sobh, Luke Vella, Kane Poturu, Tapa Paul Goals : Chris Assad 2, Sala El-Dine-Rima

SHARKS BRAVE AGAINST WESTS MAGPIES
Story & Photo'S By :
It was on again today when the Junior Sharks played four games of footy against the Wests Magpies Development teams at Endeavour Fields, Cronulla.
Well done to all you boys who played today and this week, there has been a lot of football lately and its not even the weekend, so suck in the air, get some rest coz it's all on again in 2 days.
The littlest Sharks can not be called midgets any more after the way they played today.
These little fella's all put their bodies and lives on the line for their team mates and team today.
The Under 13's had a comfortable 14 - 4 lead at half time only to see the Wests boys storm home with late charge and actually scored on the bell with a kick to come to draw the match, the kick went wide and the Sharkies held on for a very well played 16 - 14 victory.

It was good to see the two Rockys at the footy today.
Rocky Musolino, the St. George Dragons Development manager and his son Rocky came to referee a couple games and saved the day as there were no ref's scheduled to officiate.
Both Rockys did a fantastic job and so did the other young ref who was called in this morning at very short notice.

SHARKS JUNIORS TAKE ON RABBITOHS
Story & Photo's By :
The Cronulla Junior League Development teams travelled to Erskinville Oval to play against the South Sydney Rabbits.
This is the first time since early last year all 4 development teams have played on the same team since the Penrith games in '07.
The 1st game was again the mighty midgets, the under 13's gave their other team a run today and they started very well, it was obvious that they have been training hard as they had some good little plays that worked real good.
Unfortunately the Bunnies were just a bit too good on the day and ran away with the game before half time.
The Cronulla under 13's were fantastic in the second half restricting the fast moving Rabbitohs to only 2 second half tries.
The final score was about 32 - 0 with the score 24 - 0 at half time. Well done to both teams.
The next game on was the under 14's who are coming off a good win over the Dragons on Monday night came across a well disiplined Souths outfit.
Tyron Phillips from the Bunnies crossed for 3 tries in Souths win over the Sharks.
The 2 Danny's scored for the Sharks when big Daniel Byrne smashed thru the Souths defence to score then little pocket dynamo Danny Azar recieved the ball whilst on the burst to runs 25 meters to score.
In the Under 15's game the Cronulla boys struggled to over come a big tough Souths side.
Stacy Morrell was one of the best for the Sharks scoring 3 tries, Hooker Daniel Small sneaked in from dummy half and Michael Lichaa ran around the bunnies to score a nice try too.
The Under 17 were competing well up to half time, the Sharks had trouble containing South fullback Tomas Leal who had scored 5 tries when this writer had to bail.
The Under 17's took their development squad up to Newcastle to get it on with other NRL development teams with mixed success.
In the 1 st game the Sharkies payed the mighty Penrith Panthers and in a very low scoring game the Sharks drew 4 - all (the only game the Panthers lost all day)
The 2 nd game was against a highly spirited Parra Eels, the Eels were lucky to get away with a 16 - 12 win, then the Sharks faced the local mob, the Knights go good at home and after another close game won 8 - 14.
In the next 2 game the Cronulla u 17's beat Manly 18 - 6 and in the last game beat the previously undefeated Tigers 6 - 12.

TWO OUTTA THREE AIN'T BAD TO BEGIN
Story & Photo's By :
The Sharks Development teams were in action again on Monday night at Beverly Hills Park.
This time the enemy was the St. George Dragons. Under lights with more than 400 footy mad spectators, and we watched three very good, well ref'd and fair games of junior rugby league.
The first teams up were the mighty midgets, the under 13 development sides suprised a few people with thier speed, skills and general play that in the end they smashed the Dragons to the tune of 34 - 0.
The whole team deserved the man of the match award, the points were shared by 6 different players and it was a shame when the game ended and 2 teams of excited little footballers came off the field with huge grims on their melons. Well done to all involved, yeah good on ya Joe, Noel and the team.
Next up was the Under 14's, most of these guys played together last year, they all get along real good & are well coached by Robbie and Paulie real well too.
There game was a fast one with little blokes rnning around everywhere, this team plays with structure beyond their years with every member of the team knowing him job inside out, they must be good listeners hey.
The under 14's ran away in the end, the score was 28 - 4
Then came the Under 15's. The under 15 squad had already played in the morning against the visiting Queenslanders, the Toowoomba Development boys were too good on the day and had their first win of their Sydney Tour with a 36 - 18 victory.
After a very tough and physical encounter, the Dragons were able to hold off the fast finishing Sharks to win in the dying stages to finish 28 - 20 victors.
This was a bit of a grudge match ater Rea and his Matty's Cup teammates beat the Dragons at OKI Stadium this year. hehe
Everyone put in during the game, no one was sin bined, so thats an inproveemnt too.
Bennett, Day, Drinkwater & Belford crossed & Alex booted 2 conversions.
Some of these boys backed up from the Toowoomba game which kicked off at 12:00 noon.
Not only had some of the players backed up, but so did the coaches Holzie & Wiggie, it was the Gorilla conection with Cronulla Sharks Media Manager Rob Willis running water like he loves it, and the parents backed up again too, so good on every one, go the Sharks and good on ya Ken Fitzgerald for once again arranging for the boys who put all this training together & get a game of footy.
Interestingly the St. George Under 15 dev side played the Toowoomba boys on Saturday and the Dragons one that by a fair bit, 48 - 18 or something.
The Dragons have some very good players in their development squad including NSW CHS U 15's player Jamie Stanley, his mates from Endeavour like Kiti Gylmin, Hayden, Joey, Chief and the list goes on. They are a pretty hot footy team when they are on.
Well done to all the Dragons players and staff, its always great to play against the Dragons, coz if you are going to beat anyone this year. |

ON THE CHARGE: Ryan Roach is wrapped up by the Cowra Magpies defence in Hawks’ narrow under 18s win at Wade Park on Sunday. |
HAWKS UNDER 18'S WIN OVER COWRA
Story & Photo By :
IT took some brilliant play from Scott Rosser and Jace Delaney to snatch a 24-20 win over competition leaders Cowra.
Deep in their own half Rosser made a long burst down the sideline, came to the fullback and found the ever-present Delaney backing up on the inside to score under the posts.
Mitch Hurford converted to make it 24-20.
Cowra held a 20-18 lead and with only four minutes left looked likely to hold on. Hawks raced to an 18-4 lead and looked in control but defensive lapses crept into their game.
Hawks led 18-10 at the break and Cowra hit back in the second half to hit the front.
Hawks scored 3 tries in the first half - Matt Codner diving through the defence, Delaney diving over from dummy-half and Rosser fooling the defence for an easy try.
Hawks were also well served by Nathan Williams with his strong defence - 20 tackles for an inside centre is a big effort.
Almost every week topping the tackle count, Taylor Voican worked hard in defence and attack.
Ryan Davis ran the ball strongly and Ryan Roach chimed in from fullback, proving dangerous.
Still, it was a great team effort and leaves Hawks only one point from joint leaders Panthers and Cowra.
A pleased coach Paul Codner knows his troops still have to improve on their defence when it comes to the busy end of the season.
BEST AND FAIREST: 2 - Jace Delaney, 1 - Scott Rosser, Matt Codner, Nathan Williams. |

TOP PERFORMER: Maitland under-15s rugby league star Michael Steele was outstanding in his side’s State victory at Port Stephens last weekend. |
MAITLAND RL STATE’S BEST
Story & Photo By : NICK HANSEN
New South Wales junior rugby league teams continue to fall victim to Maitland's rich deposit of junior playing talent.
Maitland's under 15 representative team took out the Northern division of the NSW junior age Country Championships in Port Macquarie last weekend.
With Newcastle Knights junior coaching co-ordinator Laurie Clifton in the coaching staff, the team beat three sides from across Northern NSW to claim the title.
Clifton said the win came to a cluster of young players who had endured years of playing together without closing out a major victory.
"These boys have been playing together for about four years and have never won anything, so they were ecstatic," he said.
The team was chosen from junior clubs across Maitland, Morpeth, Cessnock and Kurri Kurri and according to Clifton a select few certainly used the tournament to make a statement.
"Players like Shay Padberg played really well, he is going places with his footy, as is Geordie Connelly, he has a good footy head as well.
"And Michael Steele in particular was absolutely outstanding, he really played well."
The Padberg and Connelly combination at halfback and five eighth is not a new one for the Maitland team, with the two close mates having played together in previous representative sides.
Maitland's team manager Dave Watson said the victory could be traced back to a developmental level.
"I really think this goes back to the development system we have with the Knights. We are always looking to improve our players and they help us with that."
Clifton said his involvement came as an extension of his role with the Knights.
"Part of my job with the Knights involves working with the coaches on developing talent," he said.
"The only thing stopping me from doing this has been the time it takes. But this year I have had the time and it has been really good."
Maitland will now go through to a grand final against the southern Country winners to determine who will be the overall NSW Country Champion. |

JUNIORS BLOW ST PAT’S AWAY TO STAY AT TOP
Story & Photo By : SAM DEBENHAM
Cowra has confirmed their status as a major threat for the Group 10 under 18s title after a strong win against Bathurst St Pat’s on Sunday.
St Pat’s went into the match in fifth spot with two wins from four matches, and were unable to add to their tally as the Magpies ran out 22-16 victors.
In miserable conditions at the St Pat’s complex, Cowra had first use of a strong wind and opened the scoring early on after a spilt ball from St Pat’s.
A cut-out pass found centre Rory Brien from close range, and Tyler Nobes’ conversion gave his team and early six-point lead.
St Pat’s hit back almost immediately on the back of a penalty, with second rower Nick Williams crossing the stripe and Jake Watson’s goal levelling the scores.
It was to be as close as St Pat’s got.
The Magpies again took charge after a slick last-tackle move down the blind side found Cohen Cartwright to score, and when fullback Chris Wilson got outside the Pat’s defence off a scrum and scored himself, Cowra had established a 16-6 lead as they went to the sheds.
On the back of quick line-speed and a general dominance around the ruck, the visitors were able to stifle Pat’s kicking game despite the strong breeze at their backs in the second half.
When pivot Haydon Hodge scored a smart solo try shortly after the break, the lead blew out to 22-6 and the game was effectively over.
Replacement hooker Andrew Milton-White and half Kris Kennedy tried gamely to get St Pat’s back in the match, but errors and penalties proved costly and regularly gave away any field position advantage their side could gain.
Cowra’s forwards - in particular second-rower Chris Chalker - were able to run their way out of trouble and nullify the breeze, and never allowed St Pat’s too much time in attack.
The home side did manage to mount a last-ditch comeback, with a fine pass from Kennedy putting Brenden Hearnden over in the corner.
When Kennedy himself barged over, and Jake Watson added the extras, Pat’s had clawed to within a converted try but with just 20 seconds on the board it was too little too late.
“Cowra were very disciplined, and we were the opposite and didn’t show any ball control and made lots of very basic mistakes,” Pat’s coach Jim Muldoon said.
“They [Cowra] won the ruck, and we gave them too much ball, but we’ll learn from the things we did wrong today.”
Muldoon praised the effort of Milton-White, and said that Kennedy was another who got better as the game progressed. |

EELS WIN NSW HONOURS AFTER HAROLD MATTHEWS TRIUMPH
Story By: Parramatta Eels

Four members of Parramatta’s Grand Final winning Harold Matthews Cup team have been selected to represent NSW Under 16’s in Wednesday night’s State of Origin curtain raiser at ANZ Stadium.
Chris Ulugia, Jacob Gagan, Rodney Moefaauo and Jason Wehbe will all wear the sky blue of NSW against Queensland in the interstate encounter, which kicks off at 5.45pm.
The selections come after all four played a starring role in the Eels 30-17 defeat of Penrith in Saturday’s Harold Matthews Cup Grand Final at Western Weekender Stadium, St Marys.
Wehbe in particular was a stand out, scoring a try and adding five goals as the Eels turned around a 17-14 half time deficit to defeat a much-fancied – and previously undefeated – Panthers outfit.
The Eels other points came through tries to Sam Ahofono, Nick Folino and Jarod Azar, with Azar bagging a double in the victory.
Parramatta’s SG Ball side was not as fortunate, going down to the Sydney Roosters 38-20 despite heading into the match a slight favourite and chasing back to back titles.
Leading by two points at half time the Roosters kicked away in the second forty, outpointing the Eels 20-4 in the second half to run out a 38-20 winner.
There was some consolation for the Eels following the match, with centre and Grand Final try scorer Tim Auremi named SG Ball player of the year.
The Eels other four pointers came through a double to Krys Freeman and one try to Nathan Gardner, while Gardner also added two goals.
The Grand Finals brought down the curtain on a highly successful year for Parramatta in the district reps, with both teams finishing second on their respective ladders at the end of the regular season.

Multi-talented sportsman Haydon Hodge has recently been selected in the NSW Country under 18s rugby league team, and hopes to go further in the sport. |
ALL-ROUNDER GOING FULL TILT WITH RUGBY LEAGUE
Hodge not hedging his bets
Story & Photo By : Peter Guthrie
Multi-talented sportsman Haydon Hodge has excelled in most sports he has taken part in, particularly rugby league.
And it is the 13-man code that seems to have won him over despite talent in cricket, swimming and golf.
Recently Hodge was selected in the NSW Country under 18s team along with Cowra team-mate Rory Brien.
Hodge and Brien played in the curtain-raiser to the City-Country clash at WIN Stadium, representing the Western Rams in the final of the country championships.
They went down to the Oxley Pioneers in the decider, but the Cowra duo did enough to impress selectors to make the state side.
“I want to go as far as I possibly can with my footy,” the speedy outside back said.
“It was great playing on a big ground like WIN Stadium, before a big match (City-Country).”
Hodge will join the 17-man squad in Queensland shortly.
“It’s good having a close mate there (in Rory), I’m also pretty good mates with the other boys from Western in the country side, so it helps,” Hodge said when asked what it’s like having team-mate Brien with him in the team.
Hodge will represent Greater Western in the NSW Combined High Schools rugby league championships at Casino next week.
Hodge has also enjoyed representing at high levels in other sports.
Last summer he helped the Cowra under 16s cricket team to their second Lachlan Council title in a row scoring 21 with the bat and taking 4-28 with the ball in the grand final against Condobolin.
“It’s good playing different sports. It breaks them up a little bit,” he said.
Hodge has also swum at a high level and can also swing a golf stick very well.
But rugby league, capturing his attention now, seems to be the dream. |

Cronulla Caringbah U15A v De La Salle U15A
Final Score 28 - 14
Saturday, 17 May 2008
The game got off to a quick start with De La taking advantage of a Cronulla mistake they regathered the ball and made it look easy down the clubhouse side to scoring in the corner.
Luke Manahan missed the conversion. 4-0 Cronulla’s Michael Lichaa put the “kick off” right up in the air and it carried with the wind ending up over the dead ball line.
Soon after Cronulla’s utility forward Luke Brown who is pushing for a development squad jersey got a nice overlap and shoved his way over for a try. Michael got the conversion.
6-4 The next try was all De La’s fast talking Rory Hood who took a moment off from directing traffic to steal a brilliant intercept and score under the posts. Luke Manahan potted it over for a 10-6 lead.
Possession is key and Cronulla were soon back into it with some good ball down on De La’s line to for Cronulla struck back soon after with a barging run by big Tokerau Raru “Toks” to score almost right under the posts.. Michael kicked the conversion 12-10 for Cronulla.
It wasn’t all straight shooting for Cronulla who got the “wobbly” boot and started dropping balls and making some fundamental errors which let De La have 3 sets of six on their line.
Reece Davidson smashed through a hit from Joseph to score near the posts. Luke hit the posts on the conversion attempt but it bounced away. 14 – 12 De La’s way.
The second half seemed to be a different game with Cronulla Caringbah forwards winning the war in and around the ruck. Big “Toks” made ground up the middle as did the smaller but no less enthusiastic Jeremy Saville.
Michael threw a great “dummy” which left the De La defence saying “where did he go “and scored. 18-14
Cameron Paddy did the same zipping through the gap to score shortly after and capped off a really good game from the little “General” 22-14
Cronulla’s had the bulk of the possession in the 2nd half and they converted it into points however Big Zach Wedersveiler didn’t give up and make some great yards up the middle of the Cronulla pack.
De La threatened Cronulla line on a number of occasions with Jackson Clarke making a break.
The Cronulla defence hung in despite Nick Radcliffe doing all he could for De La and showing why he is a form player this year.
Luke Manahan was seeing stars after a hard collision with the powerful running Rea Pittman and Stacey Morrel showed great pace to score a nice one in the corner. Michael Lichaa continued his great form from the sideline with a last minute wind change carrying the ball back inside the sticks.
28-14 There’s no love lost between these two teams.
It’s a bit of a “State of Origin” affair but it’s good to see the boys shake hands and wish each other well after the game. The De La boys were vanquished today but the look in their eye said “we’ll get you next time”
The victorious Cronulla Caringbah team left feeling a little chuffed with a hard fought victory under the belt. |

De La Salle u 15'b (2) have been a team on the move, saturday they faced Gymea who put a bit of a scare into the competition leaders De La side last week missing taking home the game by only 1 point, was it that little sneak Ellis that popped a filed goal, De La (2) bravely fought back from a 2 tries down with 2 great team tries to level the scores at the later stages of the game, Gymea however were good enough to control the game and put on the winning tries, well done to both of these team.
The much vaunted De La Salle U15a's played the much improved Engadine Dragons.
The Dragons turned up to Capt Cook oval with the eye of the tiger in them, wow, what a display we saw from the Engadine boys.
Engadine play very well against De La & combined well with a simple game plan that is deadly, close down the De La halves, restrict the ball getting to the De La forwards, then their speedy backs don't come into the equation at all. This doesn't allow the De La backs into the game.. LEARN MORE |

POSITIVE START FOR JUNIOR HAWKS
Story & Photo By :
The Junior Rugby League competition for 2008 commenced on Saturday with the Junior Hawks taking on the Gundagai/Adelong Tigers at Tim Doolan and McLean Ovals under skies more suited to cricket.
The combined Harden/Boorowa Ceeney’s 5 Star under 7’s played two games and proved popular with the spectators watching many of these players playing their first of what is hoped many games of junior league.
The Harden Tyre Service under 8’s combined Harden/Boorowa side combined well to put on a try scoring spree to run out convincing winners 30 points to 4.
A huge thanks go to Jacob Atallah who has volunteered to train the under 7’s and 8’s on Thursday’s. To the parents of these players Jacob has unselfishly given up his time to teach your children the basics of junior league and the club urges you to make yourself known to Jacob and give him your full support and assistance at training.
The Madden’s Transport under 9’s kicked off their first competition game with a close win over the Gundagai / Adelong Tigers.
As usual the Junior Hawks had a slow start allowing their opponents to put the first points on the board before a brilliant solo effort from Nathan McCarthy, who pulled out a textbook “in and away”, showed his lightning speed to streak away and score under the uprights. Conversion was unsuccessful.
A couple of lapses in concentration allowed G/A to score again. An arm wrestle from one end of the field to the other followed with neither team scoring. Until another solo effort by Jake Arabin put the Hawks within four points, with his strong run from the middle of the field and dive over the line. Patrick Smith must be practising his goal kicking, when his successful conversion had to be retrieved from down near the pool.
Patrick and Travis worked tirelessly in the middle of the ruck with some outstanding defence. One of the new kids on the block, Chris O’Connor, showed he has a good football mind with many solid runs and reading play well. Samantha Cross and Arabella Tobin got involved and made the most of their limited opportunities.
Joe Stewart and Blake McGrath had quieter games than we are accustomed to, but still put their hands up with plenty of defensive work (maybe they stayed up too late watching NRL on the tellie?!) Will Quinn played his best game yet, running hard and charging into the opposition and showed us some of the potential that we all know he has. With only seconds remaining on the clock, Jake caught the defence napping with a quick-thinking run from dummy half, darting across the line.
The conversion from Blake McGrath brought the full time score to 16-12 to the Hawks. There will be no training this Thursday, but the coach wants everyone to make the effort to come to training on Thursday 24th. Due to people away for the holidays, the Under 9’s will not be travelling to the Tumbarumba carnival, so next game will be at Tumut on April 26th.
The Delta Agribusiness under 10’s proved they will be one of the most feared sides in their first year of competitive football when they ran in eight unanswered tries and kicked seven from eight goals whilst keeping the Tigers scoreless.
The Harden/Boorowa Jack Elkins under 11’s gave their coach, Andrew Jones plenty to work on at training after they were soundly defeated by Gundagai/Adelong. With an abundance of players this season Andrew is sure to bring out the best in the players and they will be on the other side of the ledger before too long.
The Peisley Livestock Transport Harden/Boorowa under 12’s gave Bluey something to smile about when they easily accounted for the opposition to the tune of 32 points to 4.
Harden/Boorowa’s Mid Town Autos under 13’s side kicked off their 2008 season with a heartbreaking 32 points to 26 loss. A chip kick by Gundagai found their halfback, and he raced away to score as the siren was sounding. Despite the loss the boys showed glimpses of the potential they have.
Riley Manwaring showed there is no substitute for speed running in three very impressive tries on his debut for the Hawks. Alex Stewart, Jacob Prosser and Bernie McGrath were others to stand out. Some lapses in defence proved costly for the home side.
Murray Smith, another first timer also had a good all round game. Harden/Boorowa looked as though they may have snatched the game, when Riley was held up with only minutes left on the clock, only for the Tigers to race away and snatch victory. All in all it was a good team effort and the team will only improve more with some more game time. The next game being against Tumut at Tumut on Saturday, April 26, with all needed at training on Thursday, April 24.
Parents are asked to check with their child’s coach in regards to training during the school holidays. All teams will be training next Thursday and all players are urged to attend as times for the games to be played at Tumut on Saturday, April 26, will be given out.
A huge thanks to the men for manning the barbecue again this year for the Junior League, not only do they cook up a great feed they are more than willing to have a chat and share some of their thoughts on the game. The club is very fortunate to have this group of men who are more than happy to help out in any way they can.
There has been a delay in the dispatch of the Hawks shorts and socks and it is hoped they will be available for players to collect next Thursday at training.
This weeks SafePlay Code ruling is; lifting a player in a tackle is not permitted. |
RAIDERS THRASHED, BUT SHOW PROMISE
Story By : ALAN STERNBECK
South Dubbo Raiders under-14s came up against an in-form St John’s Gold in their first match of the 2008 season last Saturday.
Although the 60-6 score line was big, it was pleasing to see the boys from South get to take to the field, when only a week prior they didn’t look like fielding a team having only five registered players.
Through hard work the team now has 17 registered players, so the score line meant very little for a team that has only had one training session so far.
South were on the back foot from the start of play with Martin Fernando having to leave the field through injury but he later returned and figured prominately in a beaten side.
St John’s opened the scoring about five minutes into play and continued to score some very simple tries taking their lead out to 28-0 in the first 20 minutes.
Souths rallied with glimpses of a good attack, and was unfortunate to have some of the attacking raids breaking down at the last pass.
Alex Greenaway, Conor Bush and Nathan Trethowan tried hard in defence while in attack Martin Fernando, RJ Merritt and Allan Murphy went well .
Replacement Steven Merritt played well and was rewarded with a try on the stroke of half-time.
RJ Merritt converted to leave Souths trailing 28-6.
In the second half Souths managed to hold on to the ball and they looked promising.
It was pleasing to see some promise and that with a little more time together the team will bother a few of the top teams.
But nothing can be taken away from St John’s for the win, showing that they are a very well coached team adding a further 32 points in second half
Alex Bonham,Linton Shaw and Ray Medley tried hard in defence for the Raiders while Steven Merritt, Shannon Fogg and Eathan Laws went well in attack. |

JUNEE’S YOUNG GUNS SHINE AT LEAGUE TRIALS
Story & Photo : Laura Davies
Junee’s Josh Whitty went to Sydney at the weekend for the University and Tertiary NSW Rugby League trials, and was selected as a centre for the NSW team.
His mother, Kim Whitty, said he had played for Junee until he moved away to Lismore for university, where he is studying Exercise Science and Nutrition.
“He loves his football,” she said.
“He plays for Lismore now in first grade.”
Mrs Whitty said Josh started the sport when he was 11 years old and had been a representative player for school and the Diesels while in Junee.
His first game for NSW will be the City versus Country clash in Wollongong on May 2.
Junior Diesels also showed what they were made of at the weekend, with several players selected for Group Nine representative teams.
The Group Nine trials were held in Junee and a strong crowd enjoyed beautiful weather to support the juniors.
Under 12 to Under 15 players participated in the trials and six were selected as Group Nine players.
William Holt, Bradley McCarthy and Andrew Heffernan will be playing in the Under 13 side, while Andrew McCarthy, Patrick Sweeney and Trent Schubach will play Under 14.
Promising Under 16 player Tom Lidden was rewarded for his efforts during the Group Nine Under 16 Knockout Carnival.
He starred at Willow Park and Loftus Oval on Sunday during the competition and has been selected in the Group Nine Under 16 team.
With the Group Nine season set to start next weekend, Junee is showing some promising young talent for the year ahead. |

BEGA TOO STRONG

THE Moruya Sharks under 18s took on the Bega Roosters in the lead-up match to the pre-season opener at Ack Weyman Oval on Sunday, and found themselves down 12-nil at half time.
Moruya were still in the game at this stage, but wrong options, dropped balls and a massive penalty count against them didn’t help their cause.
On a positive note, their defence was strong throughout the match, and the Sharks were unlucky not to score on several raids.
Tom Hilyear, Sam Hicks, Ben Davenport, Jye Dunn, Darcy Burke and Shaun Reed had strong games.
Next Sunday the Sharks first grade and under 18s play at Narooma.

SELECTORS NAME INAUGURAL UNDER-18 SQUAD
Story By : DAVID STEWART
SELECTORS have named the inaugural Central Hunter Power under-18s rugby league squad to contest the NSW Country Championships later this month.
Central Coast players fill 10 of the 20 places in the squad which is formed from Central Coast and Group 21 players.
The under-18s squad will go into camp next Friday in preparation for the start of their Country Championship campaign in Newcastle on the weekend of April 19-20. |
GROUP 10 RAMS HOME THE ADVANTAGE
Story By : Dallas Reeves
Representative coaching newcomer Graeme Osborne helped stamp Group 10 under 18s back as the dominant force in the age group with 11 of his side named in the Western Region Rams 18s side on Saturday.
Group 10 players took up almost two-thirds of the Western Region 18s squad of 18 players – including Cowra’s Chris Wilson, Hayden Hodge, Rory Brien and Josh Newling – to compete in the first round of the Country Championships at Newcastle on April 19-20.
It was justified after Group 10 cruised to wins over newcomers Far West Academy (50-12) and Group 11 (36-24) at the new three-way selection trial at Bathurst’s Carrington Park.
Group 11 beat Far West 50-0 and Far West did not have a player named in the Rams 18s.
Hodge was outstanding on the wing with five tries from two matches for Group 10.
Lithgow-based Osborne, who is also the Workmen’s Club Wolves’ 18s mentor, started preparing for April 5 when he was named as Group 10 18s coach last November.
A 42-man squad had trained together for almost a month before the Group 10 18s line-up was trimmed to 18 last Sunday.
Osborne admitted he was disappointed for Group 10 fullback Jarrod Broderick (Orange CYMS) and interchange player Rhys Frame (St Pat’s). He felt both were worthy of selection.
In an interesting move for what is a specialist position, both the Group 10 custodian (Broderick) and Group 11 fullback Jake Coxedge (Narromine) missed selection.
Cowra’s Wilson, who played in the centres for Group 10, was named as Western Region Rams 18s fullback.
Group 11 had won the last three contests at under 18 level against Group 10 but under Osborne the boys from the east of this region were able to turn it around.
“Eleven [players making the Rams side] was good, 13 would have been better and the whole 18 would have been excellent,” Osborne said.
“I was very happy with our performance and it’s a great number to get 11 players in, but I thought we deserved 12 or 13 in [the Rams under 18s] side considering how well we played in both matches.”
“There has been a bit of soul searching and a lot of planning that people don’t see. It’s great for it to come to fruition. This squad were excellent and they mixed well.”
Osborne said his whole forward pack toiled well with five of his starting six making the Rams squad.
He was impressed with the control of halfback Scott Rosser (Orange Hawks) and five-eighth James Toole (Bathurst Panthers).
The pair were named in the Rams side as the seven and six with Toole’s Panthers team-mate Narayan Rodwell making the Rams squad on the interchange bench.
Osborne took on the job with two charters.
The first was to get Group 10 players into Western Region Rams jumpers which was an outstanding success.
The second was to improve his side’s defence at this level after Group 10 18s had dropped 124 points (41.33 per game) in their last three matches against Group 11.
While conceding 24 points against Group 11 did not enthuse Osborne, he was prepared to accept the Group 11 try-flurry came near the end of a day where the maximum temperature was 20.5 degrees.
“Late in the game the heat starts to take its toll ... it was a bit disappointing to concede some late tries [against Group 11] when I’d put that emphasis on defence but, we played really well,” Osborne said.
“The big thing was maintaining our discipline ... Group 11 are a good hard side and I think if you do the sums (Group 10 conceded an average of 18 points a game) we defended pretty well.”
Dubbo’s Greg Edwards will coach the Western Region Rams, who train at Orange’s Norton Park from 2pm on Saturday.
1 Chris Wilson (Cowra – Gp 10), 2 Hayden Hodge (Cowra – Gp 10), 3 Rory Brien (Cowra – Gp 10), 4 Mitch Hurford (Orange Hawks – Gp 10), 5 Allan Arnold (Dubbo Macquarie – Gp 11), 6 James Toole (Bathurst Panthers – Gp 10), 7 Scott Rosser (Orange Hawks – Gp 10), 8 Ronald Lawrence (Orange CYMS – Gp 10), 9 Jamie Graham (Parkes – Gp 11), 10 Anthony Egan-Smith (Dubbo Macquarie – Gp 11), 11 Josh Newling (Cowra – Gp 10), 12 Brodie Chapman (Dubbo Macquarie – Gp 11), 13 Michael Nixon (Orange CYMS – Gp 10); 14 Max Ray (Dubbo CYMS – Gp 11), 15 Narayan Rodwell (Bathurst Panthers – Gp 10), 16 Cain Henry (Parkes – Gp 11), 17 Brendon Simpson (Mudgee – Gp 10), 18 Jake Joseph (Dubbo Macquarie – Gp 11).
COACH: Greg Edwards (Dubbo Macquarie); MANAGERS: Peter McDonald, Neil Millgate.
GAME 1: GROUP 10 50 (Hayden Hodge 3, Jarrod Broderick 2, Michael Nixon 2, James Toole, Brendan Simpson tries; Scott Rosser 4 goals, Chris Wilson 2 goals) defeated FAR WEST ACADEMY 0
GAME 2: GROUP 11 50 (Kurt Fuller 3, Doug Potter, Lawrence Fogg, Allan Arnold, Cain Henry, Jake Grace, Justin Toomey, Cameron Winters tries; Jamie Graham 4 goals, Henry goal) defeated FAR WEST ACADEMY 0
GAME 3: GROUP 10 36 (Hayden Hodge 2, Chris Wilson, Mitch Hurford, James Toole, Josh Newling, Jarrod Broderick tries; Scott Rosser 4 goals) defeated GROUP 11 24 (Allan Arnold 2, Cain Henry, Jamie Graham tries; Graham 4 goals). |

TIGERS MAKE PRESENCE FELT WITH WINNING DOUBLE
Story & Photo By : MICHELLE COOK
BLOOMFIELD made sure they were noticed at the Group 10 Junior Rugby League carnivals in Orange on Saturday.
Orange CYMS hosted the under 13s and 14s at Norton Park and Bloomfield held the under 15s and 16s carnival at Max Stewart Oval.
Bloomfield finished on top in the under 16s event after finishing on equal points with Cowra but a better for-and-against moved the Orange side in front.
The Tigers were best in their pool in the under 13s and were runners-up in the under 15s after being tied on points with Panthers but the Bathurst side had a better for -and-against.
Bloomfield president Brendon Sturgeon said the results were positive leading up to the 2008 Group 10 Junior season but they were also beneficial for the players seeking representative selection.
The carnivals are part of the Group 10 juniors selection process and clubs will compete at another event at Oberon this weekend where selectors can get a last look at the players before they decide on the teams.
Oberon also proved to be a club to look out for in the coming season finishing on top of their pools in the under 13s and under 14s divisions.
Lithgow Storm was also on top of their pool in the under 14s competition.
In the under 16s Cowra was runners-up and Panthers took out the under 15s event.
In the under 15s carnival Bloomfield drew with Panthers 12-all, beat Cowra 12-4 and downed St Pat’s 18-0.
CYMS were unable to score a point in their losses to Mudgee, Cowra and Panthers.
In the under 16s games Bloomfield downed Oberon 14-6, Lithgow 28-0 and Blayney 16-0.
CYMS were edged out by Mudgee 14-10, went down to St Pat’s 16-4 and lost to Cowra 28-6.
The next Group 10 juniors carnival will be held this weekend at Oberon following which the representative teams will be announced. |

The Cronulla Sharks U/15's Development squad will be playing a team from the Far West Academy on Friday the 18th of April at 10.00am.
The game will be at Endeavour 2 outside Toyota Stadium.
The Academy team draw their players from as far away as Broken Hill.
It will be the first time some of these boys have been to the city or the beach so it's a real experience for them.
I'm sure the boys will appreciate a good crowd on the day. If you're not doing anything that day in the holidays come and watch an entertaining game.
When last years under 14's visited Nyngan for a few days, the local people really turned it on.
The boyz, they went wild pig chasing, visited a farm with a plane in the shed next to a huge tractor, a fantastic dinner which included yabbi races for the boyz and the travelling parents, so c'mon, tell everyone to come and watch the game. Ed |

HUGE WIN BY RAIDERS SG BALL
Story By : By James Watson Canberra Raiders
The Canberra Raiders SG Ball side has recovered from a sluggish start to record a thumping 70-22 victory over the St George Dragons at Seiffert Oval on Saturday.
The victory continues the Raiders strong season, but despite the score line, coach David Hamilton believes his team still has plenty of room for improvement.
“The end result was good obviously, 70 points, you can’t complain about that, but the first half our attitude wasn’t there,” Hamilton said.
“We just turned up, scored a try in the very first set and they sort of thought it was going to be a bit of a walk in the park from there.
But Saints, to their credit, put some back to back sets together and put some points on us.”
Daniel Vidot got the Raiders off to the best possible start with the first of his four tries coming in just the first set of the match.
After just two minutes however, the Raiders looked lethargic and lacked urgency, allowing the Dragons to hit back through Steve Riley.
The Dragons took the lead when Joseph Leilua rose above the Raiders defence to take a cross field bomb, and after eleven minutes St George was ahead 10 - 4.
The Raiders realised they had a real battle on their hands and they scored back to back tries through Sam Williams and Vidot to give Canberra a 14 - 10 lead.
The Dragons were rattled, and when they finally got the ball back they coughed it up and Drury Low was on hand to score his first of the afternoon. Brendan Harper converted from the sideline to give the Raiders a handy 20-10 lead approaching half time.
The Raiders lost the ball on the first tackle after the restart allowing the Dragons just enough time to score another try through their hooker Kyle Mallyon and Cameron King converted to make it 20-16 at the break.
The Raiders came out much more focussed in the second half and ran riot, posting 50 points for the half.
Mark Nicholls crashed over shortly after the restart, Cameron Breust converting for a 26-16 lead and when Drury Low went over for his second Canberra had opened up a 14 point lead in the blink of an eye.
Raiders’ hooker Matt McIlwrick scooted from dummy half, beating five defenders on his way to the line and when Sam Sauiluma scored untouched the Raiders lead 42-16.
Low completed his hat trick and Breust converted from the sideline to make it 48-18 with eighteen minutes remaining.
Again the Raiders went off the boil slightly with some simple errors creeping in to their game. St George took advantage to score and make it 48-22 with eleven minutes to go.
However, the Raiders refocussed to score four tries in the final ten minutes. Sauiluma and McIlwrick both scored their second, and Daniel Vidot scored again to make it 64-22 when the siren sounded.
The scoring wasn’t over though, with Vidot saving the best til last. The Dragons received a penalty after full time, and put a kick through in a last ditch effort post points.
Vidot had other ideas though and took the ball on his own ten metre line before launching a huge kick down field. Vidot won the race to the ball, picked it up at full speed and dived over under the posts to complete the 70-22 victory.
Raiders captain Mark Nicholls was happy with his side’s performance, especially in the second half and was pleased they put the Dragons to the sword.
“Yeah it was good to get a big win, we need it judging by the ladder, our for and against isn’t that flash, so it was good to get away in the second half,” Nicholls said. “I think we finished off well, their body language wasn’t real good after a couple of tries and it was nice to finally put a big score on someone.”
The only concern coming out of the game for the Raiders is McIlwrick and front rower Karl Salivano both being placed on report for a 34th minute dangerous throw.
The Raiders will be hoping to continue their stellar form when they take on the Illawarra Steelers at WIN Stadium next Friday night.
(Daniel Vidot 4, Drury Low 3, Matt McIlwrick 2, Sam Sauiluma 2, Sam Williams, Mark Nicholls tries; Brendan Harper 5, Cameron Breust 4 goals) defeated (Kyle Mallyon, Steve Riley, Joseph Leilua, Cameron King tries; Cameron King 3 goals) at Seiffert Oval. DRAGONS VS RAIDERS SG BALL MATCH REPORT |

SEASON OF CELEBRATION
Story & Photo By : BILL NORTH
Dubbo and District Junior Rugby League (DDJRL) is looking forward to a huge 2008 as part of the Centenary of Rugby League celebrations.
The first round of matches will take place tomorrow with fixtures of all clubs in the competition to be played at Apex Oval.
Mini League games kick off from 9.40am and competition matches from 10am with the last games to get underway at 5pm.
President Neil Milgate hopes everyone enjoys the first day of junior league for the season.
“We have a lot of things planned for the centenary and it should be a good year,” Milgate said.
“Everyone has been busy during the off-season trying to keep the game alive and going ahead in leaps and bounds.
“On top of the Richardson Cup, Peachey Shield and Andrew Ryan Cup, we will also be running gala days and one of the highlights will be unveiling the centenary plaque at Victoria Park No.1 Oval with senior rugby league on April 25.”
DDJRL vice-president Sean Barker said numbers had again increased, but added that opportunities still existed for people wishing to join a team.
“In the last few years we have seen a 5 to 10 per cent increase in numbers and we expect to see that continue,” Barker said.
“PCYC have filled all ages from under-7s to 16s for the first time in many years, joining St John’s, South Dubbo and Narromine to have nominated in all divisions.
“There are still clubs accepting players in all age groups and interested players should contact myself on 0400 367 558 or Neil Milgate 0428 530 513 to be directed to an suitable team.
“In particular Eastridge are looking for under-8s, 10s and 14s, PCYC under-16s and South Dubbo under 14s.”
Barker said there were some new concepts being introduced in 2008 to help make the games more enjoyable.
“Junior referees who recently sat their course will be wearing yellow vests as part of a program called “Don’t see red, see yellow”, to allow the young guys applying what they’ve learned without pressure from the sidelines,” he said.
“Also, we will be running four “Silent Saturdays” throughout the season, where no calling out from the sidelines will be allowed.
“Studies have found that young children on the field don’t distinguish between good and bad calls, they simple hear people yelling.
“SES volunteers will be walking around sticking Chup-a-chups in the mouths of offenders and demanding a gold coin donation to go towards the SES.” |
STORM TEAMS IN HOME FIRST
Story By :
FOR the first time this season the Central Coast Storm's three rugby league teams will all host home games this Saturday.
In the Harold Matthews Shield fixture, Central Coast Storm will take on Illawarra at noon.
Then Central Coast Storm and Illawarra will clash at 1.30pm in the SG Ball match.
And in the main game, Central Coast Storm will meet North Sydney in the Premier League match at 3pm.
All three matches will be played at Morry Breen Field, Kanwal.
Last Saturday the Storm's Premier League suffered a 28-16 loss to Newtown at Kanwal.
Down 24-6 at the break, the Storm improved to win the second stanza 10-4.
In the Harold Matthews Shield match at Kogarah, St George won 22-10.
And in a remarkable end to the SG Ball fixture, the Central Coast Storm looked to have earned an 18-16 victory until they conceded a penalty at the death.
The penalty allowed St George to kick for touch then score a match-winning try after the siren. St George won 20-18. |

GRACE IN GROUP 11
Story By :
Forbes players feature in the new under 18 Tooheys Group 11 side, announced after selection trials held over the weekend in Dubbo.
Three Forbes players have made the list with one talented young local footballer making the 18 and two players on the fringe of selection.
Jake Grace will play in the second row of the 2008 junior group side, while Lou Goodwin and Les Pitt were named as players just missing out on a spot.
The selection trials were played in Dubbo over the weekend in a round robin format. Each side from the group took their under 18s squad and the Magpies were well represented with a side of approximately 19 junior players.
Curtis Wykamp is the coach of Forbes’ under 18s side.
Wykamp said he was impressed with the performance of the side’s players but felt Forbes’ was under represented.
Wykamp said he felt a number of his players’ performances warranted selection.
“I’m happy for the boys who got selected but I’m also disappointed for the ones that weren’t,” he said.
“There were a few I thought should have been picked but didn’t get a look in.”
The selection trial doubled as Forbes’ first hit-out for the 2008 season and despite disappointment at the number of Forbes players selected, Wykamp said he was impressed by the side as a whole.
Forbes convincingly defeated both Narromine and Cobar, a sign which bodes well for the under 18s Group 11 title defence.
“I wasn’t expecting much, but the boys gelled really well,” Wykamp said.
“We didn’t get a crack at CYMS or Dubbo Macquarie but I thought we were one of the better sides out there.”
“They did pretty well,” he said.
The Forbes players begin training with the Group 11 squad on Tuesday night at Apex Oval in Dubbo. |
DUBBO TEAM DOMINATE UNDER-18 SQUAD
Story By :
Players from Dubbo Macquarie and Dubbo CYMS have dominated the Group 11 under-18s team, which will meet Group 9 in a curtain-raiser at Parkes on Saturday.
A total of 14 out of the 18 players selected hail from the Dubbo clubs with Narromine’s Jake Coxedge, Forbes’ Jake Grace and Parkes pair Cain Henry and Jamie Graham the only non-Dubbo players selected.
James Armitage will coach the side, which has training runs scheduled for tonight and Thursday at 7pm.
Four players - Wellington’s Aiden Ryan, Parkes’ Jacob Collins and Forbes pair Lou Goodwin and Les Pitt - are on the verge of Group selection and have been added to the Far West squad to enable selectors to have a look at them ahead of further Group fixtures.
One player not considered for selection was Nyngan’s Brad Howard, who was cited following a brawl against Macquarie at last Saturday’s under-18s carnival.
Howard was charged after running off the bench to get involved in a fight and has until tomorrow to decide whether to contest the charge before the Group 11 judiciary.
GROUP 11 UNDER 18s: Jake Coxedge (Narromine), Allan Arnold (Dubbo Macquarie), Chris Jones (Dubbo CYMS), Lawrence Fogg (Dubbo Macquarie), Doug Potter (Narromine), Kurt Fuller (Dubbo Macquarie), Cain Henry (Parkes), Max Ray (Dubbo CYMS), Jamie Graham (Parkes), Dave Richards (Dubbo Macquarie), Jake Joseph (Dubbo Macquarie), Jake Grace (Forbes), Brodie Chapman (Dubbo Macquarie), Justin Toomey (Dubbo Macquarie), Lionel O’Mally (Dubbo CYMS), Cameron Widders (Dubbo CYMS), Anthony Egan-Smith (Dubbo Macquarie), Ryan Marlin (Dubbo CYMS). |

SHARK ALARM: Gavin Buttsworth and his Moruya team mates will return to Ack Weyman Oval in a fortnight. |
YOUNG SHARKS GALLANT IN DEFEAT
Story & Photo By :
THE Moruya Sharks under 18’s played the Bay Tigers for the prestigious Donna McLelland shield last Thursday and although the boys were beaten on the night by a very good and fit Bay side, the young Sharks showed their coach and supporters they will be more than competitive in the coming group 16 competition.
In front a good crowd the Moruya boys put it right to the Bay boys for the most of the game.
Fitness and defence on the line was a crucial factor at the end of the game. For the Sharks, Matt Evans had a blinder along with Shaun Rudd, Aaron Murphy, Sam Hicks, Jai Dunne and Darcy Burke.
The Tarra ford Cup will kick off for the season at Ack Weyman Oval in a couple of weeks with four games to be played. Both first grade and under 18s will play. The first game will be against Bega at noon.
The Sharks will be holding a sausage sizzle to welcome new players this Sunday at 3pm at the Waterfront Hotel.
All supporters, wives and girlfriends are welcome to attend along with people who wish to help make the Sharks force in 2008.
“We are sorry to hear that Ack Weyman has been unwell, but from all reports the old boy is back on his feet,” Sharks spokesman Robert Jay said.
“We wish him a speedy recovery.” |

EELS JUNIOR REP'S ANNOUNCED
Parramatta has announced its SG Ball and Harold Matthews Cup squads for 2008.
Coaching and management staff finalised their 23 man squads after trial victories over Illawarra at the weekend.
The SG Ball side, coached by Troy Pezet, is looking to defend the title won by the club in 2007 while the Matthews Cup will be out to improve on its semifinal finish.
“The depth has been outstanding,” Parramatta Development and District Teams Coordinator Ben Rogers said.
“There’s been more in terms of quality and quantity which made narrowing the squads down to 23 players extremely difficult.”
Both squads play their final trial on Saturday against Manly at Brookvale Oval. Harold Matthews Cup kicks off at 3.30pm with SG Ball to follow at 5pm.
“We’ve got high hopes for the squad given the achievements of the past few years,” Rogers added.
“We’ve been in the finals regularly and won the Ball in 2007 so they’ve got a lot to live up to, however all going right I see no reason why we shouldn’t threaten again.”
The 2008 SG Ball and Harold Matthews Cup season begins on Saturday 16 February against St. George at Cabramatta Sports Ground. | LEARN MORE ABOUT THE EELS JUNIORS | |

REGISTRATION COSTS FOR JUNIOR RUGBY LEAGUE REDUCED
Story By :
Canowindra Junior Rugby League has held its first committee meeting of the year and with the season kicking off on Saturday March 29 (the Saturday after Easter), it is time to get organised and capitalise on all that swimming training that you have been doing for fitness work over the summer.
Now the good news is that registration costs have gone down for under 8s age group registration costs $25 while for under 10s, 12s, 14s and 16s registration is only $35.
For more excellent news this cost includes football shorts and socks and a t-shirt celebrating the 100 year anniversary of rugby league, a bargain in anyone's book.
The ever patient registrar, Alison Wythes, will begin taking registrations at The Oval on Monday 4th February from 5pm and she will be there on following Mondays and on training days as well.
For those wishing to sign up for the season and potential players take note, you cannot begin training until you have paid your registration fees and these must also include a passport photo [a small school photo is ideal and a copy of your birth certificate for proof of age.
Training will start on Tuesday February 12 at the Oval at 5pm and continue on Thursday from then until season's end.
The coaches for the 2008 season are Under 8's Aaron Reid, Under 10's vacant at present, Under 12's Col Tangye, Under 14's Barry Traves, Under 16's Paul McNaught.
There will be more news later on a trial game which perhaps will incorporate referee training so if you want to become involved in junior league as an official then contact Peter Watt if you are interested.
So hunt out the footy boots and come up to The Oval for the beginning of the 100th season of rugby League in Australia. |

Sharks Matthews Cup in action against the canberra Raiders (Photo : ourfooty media) PHOTO'S |
SHARKS VS CANBERRA RAIDERS TRIALS
What a fantastic day it turned out to be on this the 107 th Australia day, a few hundred fans, including many visitors from our Nations Capital : Canberra.
The Cronulla Sharks Junior Rep team the Harold Matthews & SG Ball squads had their first trial game of the year.
What a welcome the new Matty's Cup boyz got from the Raiders, they had some big boyz.
Not sure what the score in either game was but i think the Sharks either won or came very close.
Both the Raiders & Sharks used just about their whole squads in games that comprised of 4 quarters. The Sharks Matty's Cup coaches rotated the 2 teams made up from the squad in the first & the second half of the game.
The Matthews Cup boyz looks great in their Sharks jumpers & all looked extreemly proud as they ran onto Gymea High School's footy oval, which was in really good nick.
The second Matt's Cup team wore the Sharks away jumpers and look great along with the fantastic green of the visiting Raiders outfit.
