HOSTS PREVAIL IN THRILLER
Story By : JOSH ALSTON Townsville Bulletin
QUEENSLAND Secondary Schools prevailed 14-10 over a willing New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges outfit last night in a match with all the intensity of State of Origin.
QSS drew first blood in the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Championships encounter after only four minutes when halfback Ben Hunt put centre Daniel Vidot through down the right.
Rampaging secondrower Kenny Edwards again exposed the NSWCCC right-side defence with a damaging 40m run shortly after.
Poor ball control and discipline plagued the back end of QSS's second half and they routinely turned the ball over, but the visitors struggled to make inroads.
NSWCCC five-eighth Daniel Mortimer threw a superb pass to lock Daniel Penese who couldn't find a flying Nathan Gardner who fell, trying to take the pass.
Gardner's horror night continued after he coughed the ball on the line and was smashed into touch by QSS's Ryan Williamson.
NSWCC made no mistake though, after they received another penalty with Jamie Buhrer scoring out wide.
Another penalty on halftime gave Gardner a chance but he missed the conversion attempt from in front.
Edwards was brutal in the second half as he tore apart NSWCCC's left side defence to score a superb individual try and give QSS a 10-6 lead.
NSWCCC struck back again after QSS were penalised on their own line for a high shot with Gardner touching down, before
Hunt threw a superb cutout pass to centre James Munns who scored in the final seven minutes to seal victory.
Earlier, the Combined Affiliated States defeated ACT 26-10. QSS will now play CAS in their first semi-final tomorrow at Dairy Farmers Stadium at 4.15pm. |

FLYER GEIA ON STANDBY
Story By : Matt Marshall,
LIGHTNING-fast Palm Island teenager Obe Geia stands on the cusp of a dream NRL debut for the Cowboys tomorrow night after being drafted into North Queensland's top squad yesterday.
The 18-year-old Geia, who has surpassed Matt Bowen as the fastest player at the Cowboys, could be unleashed against the Broncos at Dairy Farmers Stadium, with veteran centre Paul Bowman (leg) in doubt.
Geia trained with the NRL squad yesterday and coach Graham Murray said the former Australian Schoolboys representative shaped as a bolter if Bowman failed to come up.
A call-up would cap a dizzy rise through the ranks for the electric flyer, given Geia played local league for Sharks United in Townsville a fortnight ago.
"He'd be a chance to play," Murray said. "But at this stage, he's only filling in for Paul. Obe came in and trained pretty well."
Although Geia does not figure highly in the club's pecking order for outside backs, his X-factor status and untapped speed have thrust him into the selection mix.
"He's got to prove a bit in Young Guns yet," Murray said. "He's only had the odd game there so he's certainly not ahead of too many others."
Geia's chances of a stunning unveiling hinge on the make-up of the Cowboys backline, with the fitness of skipper Johnathan Thurston clouding North Queensland's preparations.
Thurston is still nursing a hip flexor complaint and did not train yesterday.
The Test No. 7 is not expected to run today, with Murray acknowledging his star playmaker may not play.
"If you don't train you're in some doubt," Murray said.
"We have to manage that hip flexor and that's what we did.
|

"We didn't ask him to train and we'll see how he is tomorrow. But even if he doesn't train, we still won't rule him out at this stage. It's all about rehab and managing it right through the week."
In other changes, young sensation Ben Farrar, who has replaced veteran Jason Smith at pivot for the Cowboys' past two matches, may again start in the halves despite being named on the bench.
"It will depend on the combinations and on Johnathan," Murray said. "We can't make a decision on Ben until we know a bit more about Johnathan.
"Ben has played only three games in first grade but he's been good. He keeps getting better every game he plays."
The Cowboys still have to decide on their final bench make-up, although a strong performance from prop Ray Cashmere against the Warriors has former Maroons prop Matt Scott again shaping as 18th man.
Following a rest day, the Broncos will hold their final tune-up at Red Hill this morning before flying to Townsville. |

CRONULLA-CARINGBAH KICK 4 KIDS
The under-13’s from the Cronulla Caringbah club kicked over 1,600 goals and in doing so managed to raise almost $20,000 for the Starlight Children’s Make-A-Wish Foundation at their annual Kick 4 Kids Charity initiative, held on the back fields adjacent to Toyota Park.
The junior league players braved a strong southerly and a soggy ground to kick goals from 10.00am in the morning until well into the afternoon.
This years Kick 4 Kids takes the total monies raised over the three year history of the event to in excess of $50,000. Kick 4 Kids has supported various children’s charities in the past, with the proceeds from this year to go to the Starlight Foundation.
The event was organised by Dean Gillard of the Cronulla Caringbah club, while the ETU (Electrical Trade Union) and the Law Society, were the major sponsors. VISIT OURFOOTY PHOTO GALLERY

NSW CHS FIGHTBACK
Story& Photo By : ADAM WATKIN Townsville Bulletin
NEW South Wales Combined High Schools (NSWCHS) bounced back from a first-day loss to record a convincing victory at the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Championships yesterday.
Down 10-6 at halftime, NSWCHS scored three unanswered tries in the second stanza to defeat New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges (NSWCCC) 22-10 at the Townsville Sports Reserve.
After a demoralising 24-6 loss to Queensland on Monday, NSWCHS coach Peter Denham said yesterday's 12-point win had restored the team's confidence.
"I was really happy with the team's effort and effort was something we spoke about after we played Queensland," he said.
NSWCCC jumped to a 10-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes following tries to Nathan Gardner and Greg Waddell.
The lethal combination of Kieran Foran (centre) and Jason Baitieri (second row) terrorised the NSWCHS right-edge defence, resulting in line breaks in the 13th and 16th minutes.
"At halftime I was still happy with their effort but there were things we needed to fix because they had caught us a few times on our right-hand side," Denham said.

LOCAL DERBY WAS A THRILLER
Story By : Brian Howden
Bluehaven 0 vs Budgewoi 12
This was the most anticapted game of this round, it was first place Budgewoi Bulldogs playing second place Bluehaven Raiders.
Budgewoi have been the team setting the standard in the under 13 age group throughout the year, winning the majority of their games by large scores and stinging defence.
Coach Rod Duck had the Bluehaven boys primed and ready to continue their impressive season and the team performed beyond expectations.
Unfortunately, Bluehaven lost the game but the boys gained respect for the gritty determination in defence and their never stop trying attitude.
The majority of the first half was played within our own half and it was only tired defence that allowed Budgewoi to score one try.
The second half continued like the first half, the Raiders could not control the ball and allowed ourselves to have continued pressure applied by the Bulldogs.
Bluehavens never give up attitude was simply awesome to witness, Budgewoi continuned to attack our try line but the Raiders application in defence was fantastic.
Bluehavens opportunities to attack the Bulldogs was limited but when the Raiders did have the footy they applied more pressure than Budgewoi has received this season and nearly crossed the try line on several occasions.
When the referee declared it was fulltime, the scoreboard indicated the Raiders had lost the game by 12 points.
Bluehaven may have lost the game on the scoreboard but they earned more than a win today.
Your club, parents and supporters including the opposition viewed a team of boys who just played their hearts out!
A big thank you to Tristan, Luke and Billy who backed up from our 11'2s due to player injuries and school holidays.
The three of you showed today that your not out of your depth at this level.
The Raiders still maintain second position on the table after their third loss of the season. |

Brendan Barlow was pleased with his teams efforts in Mondays game, "everyone played for each other"
Asked what he thought of the NSW CHS side, the Redcliffe SHS Sportsmaster commented that "they are a very talented outfit, they have talent across the park, Matt Mundine is very dangerous, but we have worked hard on our defence, all the boys had terrifc games, Kevin Proctor was named 'man of the match, while the boys voted Benny Hunt as the Players Player."

OFF AND GONE ... QSS halfback Andrew McCullough breaks into open space against NSWCHS at the sports reserve yesterday |
QSS FIRE AT LEAGUE TITLES
Story & Photo : ADAM WATKIN Townsville Bulletin
QUEENSLAND made the perfect start to the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Championships with a solid 24-6 win over New South Wales Combined High Schools at the Townsville Sports Reserve yesterday.
Following an ankle injury to star Kirwan High student Raymond Thompson last week, Queensland Secondary Schools commenced the game with regular lock Andrew McCullough at halfback.
In a fiery opening 10 minutes players from both teams traded blows in the centre of the park but it was QSS who gained the upper hand when McCullough crashed over for a try in the 16th minute.
McCullough didn't look out of place in the halfback role and continually tested NSWCHS fullback Lachlan Coote with the high ball.
QSS dominated possession and held a territorial advantage late in the first half but NSWCHS grimly defended their tryline and only trailed 6-0 at the break.
"We knew it was going to be a tough match and they threw everything at us in defence and in attack," QSS coach Brendan Barlow said. "It was a really good team effort and it was our defence that got us the win."
QSS turned on the afterburners in the second half and piled on four tries to NSWCHS's one.
North Rockhampton State High student James Munns scored the first try of the second half, followed by four-pointers to Ryan Williamson, Martin Kennedy, Ben Hunt and Ignatius Park student Samuel Bann. Palm Beach Currumbin student Kevin Proctor won the QSS man-of-the-match award while Kennedy was named as NSWCHS's most valuable player.
QSS's next match is against New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges at Brothers Rugby League Football Club tomorrow at 6.30pm. |

The competition involved teams from across the northwest of New South Wales including Moree, Gunnedah and two teams from Inverell and Tamworth.

FIELD GOAL THE DIFFERENCE AS GROUP 10 EDGED OUT
Story By :
GROUP 10 suffered a heartbreaking 23-22 loss to Group 1 yesterday in the Country Rugby League Junior Age Championships under 16 Trophy Final at Dubbo's Apex Oval.
A Group 1 field goal one minute before full-time was the difference with the result reversing the Group 10 side's narrow two-point win in the under 15s last year.
"They kicked a field goal with a minute to go," Group 10 coach Tim Mooney said. "It was a tight game right through.
"We got up by two points last year so there is not much in the games."
Group 1 held a 12-6 lead at half-time before Group 10 scored to level it up soon after the break. The scores continued to remain close during the second half.
Both teams were then locked at 22-all late in the match before the drop goal gave Group 1 victory.
Mooney thought his side coughed up too much possession in the first half but praised the spirited performance of his team.
"They never disgraced themselves at all," Mooney said. "They stuck at it right to the end, there were just two good teams out on the paddock."
Mudgee's Warwick Mylchreest, Cowra's Rory Brien, Bathurst Panthers' Aaron Piper-Hurst and Ryan Roche from CYMS crossed for tries, while Bloomfield's Scott Rosser and CYMS' Marc Slingsby were good in the loss.
Group 10 suffered a big blow in the first half when five-eighth Jackson McKay left the field with concussion but the side managed to push their opponents from the Far North Coast right to the end.
The coach said there was concern for the Mudgee player but he believes McKay will be okay.
"Our five-eighth was heavily concussed, he was taken to hospital but he should be alright," Mooney said.

QUEENSLAND SET TO HIT BACK
Story By :
THREE-QUARTER Ryan Williamson reckons the Queensland Combined High Schools under 18 side "will bounce back", after New South Wales Combined High Schools defeated the Maroons 18-12 at South Mackay last night.
"It would've been good to win but you don't want to peak too early," the St Patrick's College student said in the lead-up to next week's under 18 national championships at Townsville.
"Everyone put in an enormous effort in defence otherwise they would've beaten us by more than they did.
"We're Queensland we'll bounce back." But for now, the honours lie with the Blues, who staged a gutsy second half comeback to steal the match.
A desperate effort from centre Jarrod Croker helped turn the tide for the visitors. With the scores locked at 12-all in the second half, Croker produced a try-saving tackle on Maroons winger Bodie Clarke.
It proved a pivotal moment, with the Blues sealing the match winning try in the next set of six when flyer Jeremy Papamau crossed for his second four-pointer.
With the code's emerging stars on show, the contest was highlighted by some punishing defence from both sides. The hosts held out several New South Wales raids before opening their account with a try to hard-hitting prop Ken Edwards.
Edwards was over again after pouncing on a Ray Thompson grubber.
But the Maroons' 12-0 lead was cut back when Blues' Rory O'Brien charged over the white line.
Trailing 12-6, New South Wales hit back again when Papamau scored after the break.
Fullback Lachlan Coote converted from the sideline to level the scores before Papamau claimed the match-winning try.
"That was a great hit-out," New South Wales coach Peter Denham said after the three tries-to-two display.
"Right across the park there were some great performances."
The Blues mentor believed the two teams were blessed with talent.

"They're all tied to NRL clubs and they could all go on from here," he said after Blues' five-eighth Ben Jones (Matraville High) was named man-of-the-match.
"It's just about attitude now. The best footballer here won't necessarilly play NRL, the kid with the best attitude will."
Despite going down to their rivals, Queensland coach Brendan Barlow praised his team's determination in defence.
"We might not have won on the scoreboard but we definitely won as far as effort is concerned," he said.
"We put ourselves under some pressure but if we can hold that attitude in defence we'll certainly come good in the national championships.
"We just lacked a little bit of cohesion around the traps. The best thing to come out of tonight was our commitment and effort in defence. We're judging our team on effort." Barlow labelled Williamson as one of the real triers for the home side which also included Proserpine product Chris Faust (Kirwan State High).
And for Williamson, the chance to play in a Maroon jersey on home soil was a memorable occasion but he admitted it was hard to concentrate on the job at hand with such a large contingent of supporters in the stands.
"I've got enough to focus on out there but I've got to get used to it (playing in front of fans)," he said.
After the match, Barlow encouraged his troops to relish the experience of playing for their state.
"You only get so many chances to play for Queensland so you've got to make the most of it," he said.

LEAGUE WIN BUILT ON RABBIT-PROOF DEFENCE
Story By : Craig Ross
CAIRNS withstood a late South Sydney barrage to secure a thrilling 16-14 victory in their under-16 rugby league clash at Jones Park on Tuesday night.
Traditionally, the annual clashes between the Cairns representative outfit and the visiting Rabbitohs Harold Mathews squad have been tight affairs and Tuesday night’s encounter did nothing to buck the trend.
Cairns coach Greg Malenstein said a superb defensive effort from his side had set up the victory.
"We worked a lot on our defence after the North Queensland championships,’’ Malenstein said.
"We did drop a lot of ball in our own half on Tuesday night, so we had to defend for most of the first half."
The Cairns outfit, which narrowly missed out on capturing the NQ Championships in Townsville last month, produced a defensive effort of such intensity, Malenstein said it resembled Queensland’s courageous State of Origin performance 24 hours later.
"At halftime I said to the boys, "that was the best defensive effort I’ve seen in the last six years – do you want to keep doing that or put some points on?"
Wisely, Cairns decided to go with the latter option, scoring some nice second half tries and defending grimly to the end as the Rabbitohs again threw everything at the home side in the final stages.
Malenstein said back-rower Rob Kyles and five-eighth Trevor Port had led the way with big hits and high work rates in defence with Port also effective in attack.
Lock forward Troy Nolan also impressed with his willing hit-ups.
Fullback Rhys Talty’s finishing signalled he, like the others, had a bright future in the game.
Malenstein said he had enjoyed working with the squad and praised their work during the representative season. |

JUNIOR PANTHERS TAKE ON SHARKS
Story & Photo's By :
On Wednesday the 4 th of July the Cronulla Development Squads travelled to Penrith to play against the Panthers.
The day started with the Under 13's. The Cronulla 13 squad has only been together for a matter of weeks, and although a bit rusty played them selves into the game with some strong defence and some well layed planned moves.
The Cronulla kids had only played 1 game of footy for 5 or 6 weeks due the foul weather we have been having and it seems that the Sutho' Council doesn't seem to care if the kids play or not.
All 4 development team played very well and the 13's coach Rob said" yeah, they went well, we have only put this team together from scratch so the boys have accounted for themselves extreemly well concidering all the rain and all" |
UNDER 14 MAGPIES DEFEAT CAMDEN HAVEN
Story By :
Our boys racked up an impressive win 28 points to nil over Camden Haven on Saturday.
This team has come a long way from recently winning their first game in years to playing with such confidence and dominance. The props Brendon Pearce and James West took the ball up to the defence line with determination. James West broke this line to score a memorable try. Strong team focussed attack from set play was unrelenting throughout the game with six tries being scored without conceding a single point.
When Camden Haven went on the attack the 14's quickly and efficiently wrapped up the attackers and on more than one occasion spoiled what looked to be curtain tries.
Try scorers were Grant Babbage, Nick West, Ben Stokes, Mitch McDonald, James West and Allan Zimmerman. Billy Hughes converted two from six attempts at goal and was instrumental in many of the point scoring sections of play.
Kyan Pannowitz was named man of the match as a reward for his strong attack and once again leading the tackle count at 16. To hold a team as good as Camden Haven to a zero point position requires the entire team to be involved. Possibly as a result of training focus in regards to tackling every player was credited making a tackle.
Adrian Marsh was credited with 14 tackles, Beau Kellner 11, Haydon Berry 9, Billy Hughes 8 and Syd Husband 7.
Tai Kelly who came off the interchange bench in the second half stayed focussed under the pressure of a goal line attack catching the high ball in the inner goal and taking it back into the field of play.
In all the entire team including those who were unable to take to the field through injury should be congratulated for their contribution to the team and this week's success against the Eagles. |
MITCHELL PEARCE OUT FOR SIX WEEKS
Story By : Roosters Media/ Photo :
Teenager Mitchell Pearce is expected to be out for six weeks after undergoing an MRI scan this morning and being diagnosed with a stress reaction to the right side.
Dr. John Orchard was at length to confirm that this was not a stress fracture of the bone, with the scans showing signs of early overload to the lower lumbar area.
He will rest and take part in light training over the next six weeks, and the early diagnosis indicates the injury will not have any long term consequences.
“Mitchell’s condition is not uncommon for players his age, however we do not expect it to be a long term problem”, said Dr. Orchard.
“Some players can carry this injury while playing, but given Mitchell’s age, it is important that he gets the right treatment now to ensure it does not become a reoccurring problem.” |

FIVE REGIONAL COLTS IN NSW SIDE TO PLAY QUEENSLAND
Story By :
FIVE of the region's best young players will face their own State of Origin battle tomorrow in Mackay when NSW Combined High Schools tackle Queensland Schools in their annual Test.
The game is a precursor to the Australian Schoolboy Championships, this year held in Townsville, and it's a chance for Farrer trio Angus McHattan, Seb Swain and Scott Blanch, Gunnedah's Trent Hilton and Coonabarabran's Wes Suckley to impress.
Swain, Blanch and Hilton flew out from Tamworth on Saturday before meeting up with McHattan, Suckley and the rest of the CHS squad.
"We've got a couple of days training in Sydney and then we go to Mackay for the Test match against Queensland," Swain said.
"Then we go to Townsville for the Australian Championships. "The Test is a big thing for CHS.
"There's a lot of rivalry there and they (CHS) got flogged last year so they want to get it back."
The local players were selected for CHS after the State championships at Myuna Bay.
McHattan, Blanch, Hilton and Suckley impressed for Greater Western while Swain played for the President's XIII.
"We went all right," Hilton said. "I think they were looking for a team that worked a bit harder.
"On the second day, after the game on the first day that we should have won, we beat the President's side 40-nil."
Following the Test the real battle begins for Australian Schoolboy places in Townsville.
CHS faces Queensland again on Monday and then NSW Combined Catholic Colleges on Tuesday before the finals.
All of the local boys will be aiming for a green and gold jersey by the end of the championships but, as the youngest member of the team, Blanch is just after some experience for next year.
He is only in Year 11 at Farrer High. "It's a learning thing for me and hopefully I'll get to go again next year," he said.
"I was surprised to even get a look in for the team so it's an awesome chance.
"I'm just looking forward to getting out there. "It's exciting. "You've got all the Origin hype of NSW versus Queensand.
"It's the biggest thing in my football career." All five players are already linked with NRL clubs.
McHattan and Hilton are signed with Newcastle, Blanch has linked with Manly, Swain with Cronulla and Suckley will head to St George-Illawarra.
Suckley has already tasted Origin-style rivalry when he helped the NSW Under 17s to a win over Queensland in the curtainraiser to Origin II in Sydney. |

The squad is scheduled to play two Tongan representative sides in a frenetic one-week tour. The Magpies duo flew out of the country on Saturday and will play their first match against a Presidents under 18s side today.
Both players know they will have to adapt to the strong, physical presence of the Tongan sides in stifling heat.
"I expect them to be big and tough. I'll get a lot out of it. We'll learn about playing against people with a lot of size, 100 plus kilograms, almost like the NRL," McClintock said.

CROCS PUT BITE ON VISITORS
Story By :
BUOYED by a vocal home crowd and successive wins against Whitsunday and Norths, Sarina Crocodiles are bound to provide plenty of bite during an action-packed weekend or rugby league at Ray Edwards Oval.
All Mercury Cup teams are set to showcase their premiership credentials at Sarina after the MDRL was forced to re-locate its mid-season carnival from the Junior Rugby League Grounds which were torn up by the under 12 state carnival in wet conditions.
And there's no doubting most eyes will be on the home side, which has surged into third place on the ladder and is level on points with defending champions Souths.
But after thumping Norths 32-14 last weekend, Crocodiles' president Scott Goode refused to talk up his side's premiership hopes with five rounds still remaining in the regular season.
"We just want to finish in the best position we possibly can, we're not looking that far ahead yet," he said before admitting the club's pre-season ambition had been to just make it into the finals.
Bolstered by an ominous forward pack which includes North Queensland Marlins' representative Quinton Fielder and Mackay Sea Eagle Shane McKellar the Crocodiles have unleashed a barrage of hard hits in defence to stymie the attacking raids of opposition sides. "Defensively it's starting to come together for us," Goode said.
"With Marty (coach Martin Bella) and Kevin Campion we've got the right people showing us how to go about it."
And the Crocodiles have an array of talented youngsters boosting the side during a torrid mid-season which usually stretches the playing depths of every club.
"Some of the younger blokes have really matured and are starting to chip in," Goode said before labelling under 19 flyer Farron Hussey as a likely prospect alongside halfback Mitchell Fairburn who is doing the job for us."
Goode's side tackles a desperate Wests outfit which has only managed to secure three wins from 11 outings but he expects the Walkerston side to pose a real threat.
The premier league game between Moranbah and Whitsunday, scheduled for 3pm today has been cancelled and the under 19 match between Sarina and Wests will now be played at 3pm instead of at 10.30am. |

IF you go to today's women's rugby league game expecting a mild mannered affair you are going to be disappointed.
NSW Country will take on City and Orange's Melissa McFarlane and Amanda Ferguson said it will not be a game of touch football.
The Country girls plan to muscle up against their arch rivals in a game which will be used as a selection for the NSW side.
The Orange representatives said the game will be no place for "girly" girls.
"It's a very physical game," McFarlane said. "We've got a big, physical forward pack."
"And they're not going to be scared to make the big hits," Ferguson added.. Learn More |

Last Saturday saw the Young Cherry Pickers travel to Harden to take on the Hawks. Luckily the frost had thawed before the first players took the field at 11 o'clock; the same cannot be said for the brave committee who turned up at 9 to set up the fields for the day. |
