KILDARE PROVE A CLASS ABOVE WAGGA HIGH IN HARDY SHIELD FINAL
KILDARE Catholic College reclaimed the prestigious Hardy Shield with a 20-0 thrashing of Wagga High School in Monday night’s grand final at Equex Centre.
A first half double to centre Lachie Gaffney gave Kildare an 8-0 lead at half-time and the one-way traffic only continued after the break.
It was a polished team display from the classy Kildare team that proved too big and outmuscled their opponents in an error-riddled contest.
Kildare lock Connor MaCauley was awarded man-of-the-match after a prominent display but he was well-supported by the likes of Hands, Royce Tout and Max Burey.
MaCauley was also named player of the series.
Kildare coach Geoff McNamara was proud to get the Hardy Shield back at the school, even if it was not the cleanest of performances from his team.
“You’ve obviously got to be happy after winning 20-0 in a grand final,” he said.
“I thought our defence was outstanding again, we had a big emphasis on that.
“Full credit to Wagga High, they came out tonight and tackled their hearts out.
“I thought we were a bit disappointing in the first half, we didn’t stick to our game plan and played some dumb footy but we had a quiet word at half-time and were better after that.”

KILDARE, WAGGA HIGH THROUGH TO HARDY SHIELD GRAND FINAL

Commanding semi-final win proves Kildare team to beat
KILDARE Catholic College tightened its grip on the Hardy Shield with an explosive 34-12 victory over Kooringal High School in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
Kildare will meet Wagga High School in Monday night’s final after both scored easy wins in the semi-finals at Parramore Park.
Dubbed the showdown of the competition to date, Kildare proved too strong for Kooringal in a quality game of schoolboy football.
Earlier in the night, Wagga High thumped The Riverina Anglican College 48-10.
Kildare was already considered title favourite and that tag was only strengthened courtesy of a commanding performance.
Max Burey, Cameron Hands and Connor Macauley all dominated as Kildare passed its biggest test of the competition to date.
Kildare coach Geoff McNamara was very proud.
“I was very happy with them,” McNamara said.
“The biggest thing was we knew that Kooringal are a quality team...they came out all guns blazing and I was very happy with how strong we were in defence.
“The way we went into, we saw this as the first of two grand finals, the way the comp is structured and we knew they were going to be very hard to get over.” |

SHIELD FINALS UNDER CONTROVERSY CLOUD
Story By : Wagga's Daily Advertiser
AS THE Hardy Shield reaches the business end of the series, attention should be squarely placed on the teams ready to battle for title honours.
However, the competition’s new-look format has cast a shadow over the impending finals.
As a large crowd gathered at Parramore Park for Monday night’s final competition round, the plight of sporting powerhouse Mater Dei Catholic College was the hot topic of conversation.
Spectators and fans vocally voiced their disapproval of the draw, which they believe has ‘cost’ MDCC a semi-final.
In a significant change to the running of the hallowed schoolboys’ competition, schools were divided into two pools based on previous shield results and final standings.
According to competition convener Michael Stubbs, at the centre of the controversial move is a strong show of compassion for schools that have struggled in previous years. “We have done this to try and ensure a more equal competition and try to give teams a chance to play even and fair games,” Stubbs said.
“The three teams in Pool A are probably going to be the strongest year to year. But, as with anything, you can never fully predict how a school will go.”
Despite the good intentions of conveners, one school has ‘fallen victim’ to the new system.
MDCC was relegated to Pool B of the competition alongside Kooringal High School and Mount Austin High School. The team played one win and one loss.
On the other side of the competition, reigning premier's The Riverina Anglican College lost both its Pool A round games.
Despite the results, TRAC will still progress through to a semi-final with WHS – and a chance to play either KHS or Kildare Catholic College for a place in the grand final.
"There had to be some advantage to being in the top pool, which we consider will have the strongest schools playing in it," convener Stubbs said.
"That's why TRAC will play Wagga High and the winner of pool A will meet the winner of Pool B. If Mater Dei had defeated Kooringal they would have been the team into the semi-finals."

KILDARE Catholic College (KCC) further cemented its status as Hardy Shield title favourite with a dominant 28-12 victory over Wagga High School (WHS).
The resounding win has instilled confidence through the KCC ranks and enhanced the school’s reputation as the competition’s premier force.
Despite the win showcasing the depth of the school’s star-studded squad, coach Geoff McNamara is reluctant to accept any tags.
“I have always been pretty confident in the boys’ ability,” McNamara said.
“I’ve had the core of this group for a few years now so they know the plays, structure and what is expected. But, I still wouldn’t give us any tags.
“Anything can happen in a game like rugby league. Even just a couple of years ago we got found out against Mater Dei (Catholic College).”
From the onset of Monday night’s clash with WHS, KCC took control of the game and dominated possession. In the opening half of the contest, KCC laid the platform for the commanding victory.
KCC was up 12-nil at half-time thanks to tries to Max Burey and winger Tom Quinn, but an onslaught of tries in the early stages of the second half crushed any hopes of a WHS win.
Cameron Hands was in outstanding form as he put the first points of the second half on the board, breaking through the stunned WHS defence at the line.
Macauley backed up the try with his own power play on the line, side-stepping his defenders to launch himself across the line and bring the score 22-0.
When speedster Tom Quinn nabbed his second try of the night to bring the score to 28-nil, not even a courageous effort from WHS dynamo Nick Hay could inspire a miraculous come-from-behind win.
“I was really happy with all the boys tonight (Monday),” McNamara said.
“They controlled the ball well. They were fairly unlucky to concede those couple of tries towards the end.
“We went in with the goal to improve completion, possession and to try not to turn the ball over as much as we did last wee. The boys did that tonight.”
Meanwhile, Kooringal High School lined up a semi-final showdown with KCC after disposing of Mater Dei Catholi College 34-nil.
Reigning premiers The Riverina Anglican College will face WHS in the first semi-final on Wednesday.

JNR REPS MATCH REPORT – ROUND 6
Story By : Cronulla SHARKS Media
It was a case of missed opportunities for the Sharks junior rep sides with a draw and a last minute loss in matches played against the Raiders at Seiffert Oval in Canberra last weekend.
In the Matthews Cup the Sharks led everywhere except at the finishing line, with the Raiders scoring and converting in the dying moments to force a 20-all draw.
In the SG Ball in a topsy-turvey contest the Sharks trailed 16-4 at half time, fought back and led 24-22 with time running out, before a try with only two minutes remaining on the clock seeing the Canberra team steal a 28-24 win.
With the disappointing endings in the round six matches the Matthews Sharks are clinging to a spot in the top eight, while in the Ball nothing short of three wins from their last three matches will see the under-18 Cronulla side qualify for the semi-finals.
In the Matthews Cup the Sharks were well in control in the first half, racing to a 14-0 lead at the break.
The Raiders scored early to make it 14-4, however another converted try to the young Sharks made it 20-4 with less than 15 minutes of the match left on the clock and victory seemed assured.
From that point on momentum shifted, with three Canberra tries, two of them converted, in the last 12 minutes of the match leaving the Sharks flat and the home team jubilant in the fact that had snuck out of the game with one competition point.
For the Sharks prop Fine Kula, fullback Dylan Smith and half back Luke Metcalf were amongst the Sharks best.
In the SG Ball match that followed the game followed a vastly different path, with the Canberra 18's well on top in the opening 35 minutes as they went to the break ahead by 16-4, a Daniel Vasquez try the only Sharks points.
Whatever was said at half time however had the desired effect on the Sharks, with three tries in the first 10 minutes, to Jesse Savage, Curtis Scott and Kyle Flanagan, seeing them take the lead 1t 22-16 in front.
A Jack Williams penalty goal extended the advantage to eight points, but with 18 minutes left in the match there was still plenty of time for the Raiders to mount a comeback of their own, which is exactly what they did.
A converted try to Canberra made it 24-22 with 14 to go, and just when it had appeared the Sharks had weathered the storm, another try two minutes from time sent the Cronulla boys home a dejected group.
Backrower Savage, prop Vasquez and SG Ball captain Curtis Scott received praise from coach Dave Howlett for their efforts on the day.
With three rounds remaining the Matthews Sharks sit in seventh place, the SG Ball in 12th.
The Sharks now return home for round seven matches against the Illawarra Steelers, scheduled to be played on Friday night at Remondis Stadium. Kick off times are 6.00pm (Matthews Cup) and 7.45pm (SG Ball).

HAY PRAISES GIFTED HARDY SHIELD SQUAD
Story & Photo By : Stephanie MuirNorthern Daily LEADER
KILDARE Catholic College Hardy Shield captain Derek Hay reserved high-praise for his talented team mates after Thursday’s convincing victory over The Riverina Anglican College.
The star halfback has been representing KCC in the hallowed Hardy Shield for four years, and was a member of the college’s champion squad which claimed 2013 honours.
“This is the best line-up I have ever played in and I’ve been playing for four years,” Hay declared.
“In that time I have played alongside players like Andrew Heffernan and Zeik Foster and, the year we won the shield, we had Jack Lyons in the team.
“But, this year is probably our strongest squad. We’ve got players like Max Burey, Connor Macauley, Cameron Hands and Royce Tout, and just heaps of depth through the whole team.”
KCC came out firing in the school’s first Hardy Shield appearance of 2015, crushing fierce rival TRAC 38-0.
“We were really keen to get over them because they beat us in the grand final last year,” Hay said.
Macauley was among the stars for KCC, securing a hat-trick of tries in a man-of-the-match winning display.
While the school’s contingent of game-changing players-makers proved a decisive factor in the victory, KCC’s strength out wide contributed to the win.
Southcity winger Timoci Vatabuli backed up his impressive performance for the Bulls at the West Wyalong Knockout with a two-try haul for KCC.
Vatabuli combined with speedy fullback Harry Fitzsimmons to score arguably the try of the night late in the second half.
Fitzsimmons gathered a kick at halfway and easily outpaced his TRAC opposition to offload the ball to the well-built Vatabuli, who cruised the final 20 metres to the try-line.
The dominant display from KCC has furthered cemented the school’s status as the competition’s short-priced favourite.
Meanwhile, Kooringal High School demolished competition underdogs Mount Austin High School 42-0.
Despite the one-sided scoreline, KHS coach Tim Wykes was determined to pay tribute to the efforts of the MAHS squad.
MAHS has fielded the competition’s youngest team, with a large portion of the inexperienced squad coming from year eight or nine.
“They really stuck at us,” Wykes said. There were plenty of occasions when they really threatened us.”
KHS star Matt Lyons led from the front as he steered his talented squad around the paddock.
“He had a great game,” Wykes said. |
FIRL MAKES JUNIORS PROGRESS
Story By : Phil Caplan Rlef Media Officer
The Federazione Italiana Rugby League has completed its junior development camps in the north-east of the country as they prepare to launch their first U18 club championship in June.
National team coach Paul Broadbent and RLEF-trained coach tutors Kelly Rolleston and Tiziano Franchini again took charge following on from the initial camp, in the north-west, last month.
“It was very positive and exciting, with the enthusiasm for the U18 competition looking great,” said Broadbent, who has led on the planning, initiated two years ago.
Over 70 players attended in three locations; Gemona, Este and Parma.
“We had an excellent turn-out, especially in Gemona, a new development area,” continued Broadbent. “Encouragingly, over half of all the boys we worked with have some experience of rugby league, which bodes really well for future development.”
The six-team U18 competition begins on 6 June. Champions Torino XIII will defend their crown with runners up NW Roosters joined by teams from Milan, Piacenza and Brescia.
FIRL is still determining the format of a possible north-east division. |
YOUNG BOIZ HAVE GOOD RUN v MATTO
Story & Photo's By : Steve Monty /
The Endeavour U13s had a pretty solid hit out today against Matraville SHS in a trail match for the 2015 Michael Buettner Shield.
Matraville could only field 12 players, so coach Dave Howlett played only 12 boiz on 'The Field of Dreams'
The Endeavour boys played well, looking for opportunities to go forward and looking for mates backing up which resulted in 8 tries.
Matraville were out manned in this trail game, appearnetly some of the Matto boys were naughty and were stood down and have let their team mates down by not being available.
The 12 Matraville boys that played tried hard in both halves and were still fighting for the footy when the final siren blew, so congrat's to both schools on some fine footy and we all look forward to the 2015 Michael Buettner Shield and seeing how these young blokes develop in the future.

Story By : Darren Hart KPRL Media
Welcome back to 2015 and what looks like being another fantastic year of schoolboy football.
While the season proper does not kick off until week two in term two the usual preparations have been underway since term 4 2014 and the boys are working hard and looking focussed and disciplined.
This year Keebra will run two open sides, An A side in the Bronco's Langer competition that flows into the GIO Schoolboy Cup and a seconds side that will Contest the tier two trophy.
The 15's will play in the Walter's Cup with the 9's and 8's in the Hancock and Renouf competitions respectively.
This year we also welcome the grade 7 cohort into high school and they will play a gala day of football that determines the teams who progress through to the wider, Metropolitan finals.
In representative news we are pleased to announce the continued success of our graduates with 14 students now taking up regular positions in a plethora of NRL teams.
(See the Graduates page to see just how many boys are successfully working their way through the ranks.)
The latest being Kenny Edwards at Parramatta, Kurtis Rowe and a resurgent Agnatius Paasi at the Titans.
In representative news 9 Keebra Boys were successful in gaining spots in the South Coast Under 18 squad set to contest the Queensland finals in May and 6 boys made the Under 15's side. (Pics and story to follow).
Recent trials have seen the Opens take on competition from interstate as well as locally and the squads are beginning to take shape.
Competition is fierce as always and this has bred a real discipline and determination that has manifested in hard work and a real commitment to training.
Supporters gear is always available from the school bookshop so lets all get behind the boys this year and make 2015 another year to remember. |
Matts Cup Match Report - Round 5
Story By : Rob Willis Sharks Media Manager
Photo's By : steve monty /
In backing up their first win of the 2015 season the week prior, the under 16 Matthews Cup Sharks have scored an impressive 40-14 win over the Newcastle Knights.
A game were the two teams were perhaps more evenly matched than the final score may have indicated, the Sharks wrapped up the win with four tries, some of them spectacular long-range efforts, in the final 15 minutes.
It was a win which consolidated the Sharks spot inside the top eight and sets them on a course for a run to the competition finals with four rounds remaining.
The Sharks began strongly and were well in control of proceedings in the first half, going to the break 22-4 up on the strength of tries to five eighth Kai Broadhurst, centre Semisi Kioa, prop Fine Kula and backrower Jay Shearman.
Responding to what would have been a lively half time address the Knights came out and pressured the young Sharks with the momentum shifting in their favour.
An early try to their gun five eight Tex Hoy narrowed the margin to 12 points and it was only some desperate Sharks defense that kept it from being even tighter.
Kioa gave the Sharks some breathing space with a sparkling 40-metre individual effort to take the score out to 28-10 and while Hoy was able to grab a second to make it 28-14, that would be as close as the visitors would get.
Further tries to Metlcalf, who showed great speed to spring away from the Knights defense, then Bronson Xerri backing up a Kioa line break and the Sharks had registered a win which is sure to give them a shot of confidence heading into the business end of the season.
The Sharks had a host of impressive performers, with Kioa devastating on the left hand side, while Dylan Smith in his second game at fullback was safe while being dangerous with ball in hand.
Sharks coach Glenn Brailey will now try to get his teams' feet back on the ground and get them back to work at training this week ahead of a tough road trip next weekend when they face the Raiders in Canberra.

EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Returning Ipswich State High students Kea Pere, Jake Ropati and Lorenzo Mulitalo will provide experience in their school's firsts rugby league team this year (Photo : Claudia Baxter) |
BIGGEST CHALLENGE YET FOR ELITE SQUAD
Story & Photo By : Jay Buchan The Queensland Times
THIS year presents arguably the biggest challenge for an Ipswich school in rugby league history.
Ipswich State High School's firsts have been welcomed to the top table.
It is an unforgiving environment in which they'll have to be able to swim quickly, or else sink like a stone.
They will contest the Queensland Super 6 competition alongside Keebra Park, Palm Beach Currumbin, Marsden, Coombabah and Wavell High firsts teams.
"This means we are basically ranked top six in Queensland before kicking a ball," coach and ISHS Rugby League Academy director Lee Addison said.
"This will be the highest rugby league accolade for a school in Ipswich in living memory, if not ever, I think."
It marks a remarkable rise for the schools premier footy team since Addison took over the ambitious league program three years ago.
"Considering we weren't even best in Ipswich as recently as 2012 I think this is something worth celebrating," he said.
"The Super 6 automatically qualifies us for the national GIO Cup. In term two we play for ranking, in term three we have play-offs for the right to finish top two in Queensland and join the Sydney teams."
Addison knows the scale of the challenge but is confident his team has the quality to mix it with the big boys.
The school has retained a number of last year's firsts team and welcomed some high calibre players to the school in 2015.
Players to stay on include Philip Sami, Ete Ete, Ryan Kent, Se'e Kali, Jessie Matafeo, Kelepi Faukaufa, Corey Kurnoth, Gary Umu and PJ Oloitoa.
"New introductions to the school in 2015 include Kristian Petty, who was NZ under 16s lock in 2013," Addison said.
"To add to this squad is a talented bunch of 16-year-olds who have graduated through the school academy system."
They include August To'Oloava, Ronaldo Mulitalo, Lorenzo Mulitalo, Jake Ropati, Waylen Manuel Bartlett, Brayden Wilks and Kea Pere.
Ipswich State High School's rapid rise through the schoolboy rugby league ranks has attracted some criticism - mainly that securing rugby league players from outside has become a higher priority than developing local talent.
But Addison denies it and defends his school's approach and record.
"There seems to be a lot of people locally who criticise us for taking players from overseas," he said.
"But we take a lot of pride in how we are developing local youngsters too. Each one of these kids is either in the Cyril Connell squad (under 16) for Ipswich or was in serious contention."

CRONULLA SHARKS SG BALL ROUND 4 – MATCH REPORT
Story By : Rob Willis Sharks Media Manager

With a strong defensive effort paving the way, the SG Ball Sharks have beaten the defending SG Ball premiers the Sydney Roosters in a round four match played at Henson Park.
The Sharks weathered an early storm, took control in the first half and did more than enough in the second 35 minutes in coming away 28-10 victors.
The win, coupled with a draw and a first round bye have the Sharks nicely position on the ladder after the first four rounds of the competition.
The game started in ominous fashion when the Roosters exploited an overlap to score what was a somewhat soft try, but from there the Sharks knuckled down to the task and worked their way back into the contest.
First points came from a show and go try from half back Jack Williams that leveled the score, before prop Louis Strickland with clever footwork and good speed went over adjacent to the posts.
Williams converted the second of the two tries and the Sharks led 10-4.
With field possession in their favour the Sharks went further ahead following a brilliant individual effort from Cameron Scott, the fullback darting through the heart of the ruck to score from 20 metres out.
The Scott try and Williams conversion made the score16-4 at half time.
After neither side could assert any dominance in the opening period of the second half it was a Sharks error that would allow the Roosters back into the game.
After the Sharks failed to recover a chip kick just two tackles the Roosters narrowed the margin with a try from a nicely worked play from close range and with the conversion it was 16-10 to Cronulla with 25 minutes of the match remaining.
However just when it appeared the Roosters were getting on top, a line break from winger Josh Tuilagi put his team on the front foot, then some individual brilliance from Curtis Scott, who flicked the ball inside for Chris Tupou, to go over and when Williams kicked the goal from the sideline the Sharks again had a handy lead at 22-10 in front.
A penalty goal took the score out to 24-10, before a determined individual effort from Keenan Yorston, the centre pushing off a couple of would-be defenders to score in the corner.
Williams couldn't add the extra two points as the fulltime siren sounded on a 28-10 Sharks win.
The next assignment for the SG Ball Sharks is a match against the Newcastle Knights next Saturday afternoon at Remondis Stadium.

CRONULLA SHARKS MATTS CUP ROUND 4 – MATCH REPORT
Story By : Rob Willis Sharks Media Manager
Photo's By : steve monty /
A dominant second half performance has seen the under-16 Matthew Cup Sharks score an impressive 34-12 victory over the Sydney Roosters in their round four match.
The Sharks were in control early, three tries seeing them race to a 14-0 advantage, however a lapse in concentration and some good ply from their opponents saw the Roosters cross the stripe twice to narrow the margin to just two points at the half time break.
Where the under-16 Sharks have failed to take advantage of winning opportunities in narrow losses over the past two weeks, this time around the they came out for the second period with plenty of intensity and purpose with their efforts quickly rewarded.
After a long break down the left hand side from centre Semisi Koa the Sharks went deep into attack it was five eight Kai Broadhurst who would capitalize, the youngster scoring from close range to extend the lead to 18-12.
With the conversion from half back Luke Metcalf it was 20-12 Sharks but the momentum and run of play was in their favour and continued to exploit the Roosters out wide with Jaemon Salmon striding out before sending Metcalf on a 30-metre run to the line to make it 26-12.
Not long after it Fine Kula crashing over adjacent to the posts to put the result beyond doubt.
A penalty goal to Metcalf made it 34-12 in completing the scoring.
While admitting his team had further improvement in them, Coach Glenn Brailey was pleased with the performance and happy to chalk up an important win which keeps his team within striking distance of the top eight.
“We were good after half time,” Brailey said. “I thought everybody did their job but if I was going to single anyone out it was the best performance from out halves so far this year.
“Hopefully Kia and Luke will get some confidence from today and continue to improve.”
With two points from a bye and two close losses before today's victory the Matthews Sharks are now on four competition points after four rounds of the season.
Next week the Sharks Matthews boys play host to the Newcastle Knights at Remondis Stadium |

LOST OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG SHARKS
Story By : Sharks Media
Photo's By : steve monty /
For both Sharks junior rep teams it was a case of lost opportunities with the Ball Sharks squandering a lead and the Matthews Cup side not able to get over the top of the Bulldogs in a close loss in round three matches played on Saturday.
The Ball Sharks had their game well and truly under control before an in-goal error saw the Bulldogs snatch a last minute 16-all draw, while in the Under 16's Matthew match the young Cronulla side failed to take advantage of superior field position and a number of scoring chances in going down 12-10 in a nail-biter.
The draw in the SG Ball match hardly told the story of a Sharks side that was dominant for large periods of the game. The Sharks were in front 16-4 and could have extended their lead however a lost ball when attempting to score kept their opponents in the match.
The Under-18 Sharks again had the chance to ice a win with under eight minutes remaining when a shot at penalty goal was waved away, keeping the score at 16-4, before the dramatic finish saw the Dogs storm back into the contest.
A converted try saw the lead narrowed to 16-10, before a bizarre moment less then two minutes from time, the Sharks spilling the ball in the in-goal area only to see the Bulldogs touch down for a try, followed by a conversion from the touch-line, resulting in a drawn result.
For the Ball Sharks halfback Kyle Flanagan played strongly in his first game in the 18's team, with his kicking game a feature. He was ably supported by Curtis Scott and Billy Magoulias with the experienced pair amongst their teams' best.
In the Matthews Cup it could best be described as one that got away in a 12-10 loss to the Bulldogs in the match played at Remondis Stadium.
Like their SG Ball counterparts the Sharks seemed well in control of the match and in going to the break up by 10-6 it appeared they might be good enough to secure their first win of the 2015 junior rep season.
Unfortunately that wasn't the way it panned out, with a Bulldogs try giving them a narrow two point lead which they would manage to defend until the fulltime siren.
The mixed results against the Bulldogs have now left the two Sharks teams with important games coming up next weekend when they travel to Henson Park to take on the Roosters.
Those matches are scheduled for 12 noon and 1.30pm kick offs, with a NSW game featuring the Newtown Jets, the Sharks partners in the NSW Cup competition, to play the Wests Tigers at 3.00pm.

FIRL PREPARES FOR EXPANDED YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP
RLEF MEDIA Release
In preparation for what promises to be the most extensive domestic season in the modern history of Italian rugby league, the Federazione Italiana Rugby League has run three U18 training camps.
Overseen by national team coach Paul Broadbent and his assistant Kelly Rolleston, the technical camps began in Turin and ended in Brescia with 60 youngsters participating.
Broadbent commented, “It's been another very positive step in FIRL’s progression.
“It was great working with more new players, helping develop the sport at grassroots and with the next generation.”
FIRL will conduct a second series of camps, this time in the north east area, on 14-15 March, after which the expanded schedule for the U18 club competition will be released.
Rolleston added, “The aim of increasing last season’s three-team U18 competition to a six-team competition started well.
“There were some quality young players and we look forward to seeing their progress during the 2015 championship.
I would like to think that some of the players we have seen over the weekend could be involved in the national men’s team over the next few years and, who knows, if Italy qualifies for the next Rugby League World Cup in 2017 they could find themselves on the field with some of the best players in the world.” |

TIGERS PLAN TO SHAKE UP KNIGHTS
Story & Photo By : Tamworth's Northern Daily LEADER
MATT Kenny is confident his Greater Northern Academy Tigers will be more than competitive when they tackle the Newcastle Knights Under 17 Development Squad at Cessnock’s Baddeley Park on Saturday afternoon.
He is the head coach of the Tigers, the older squad in the GNA program, and impressed by the way his young players have performed at the GNA training sessions, especially of late.
However they face a major hurdle against a Knights squad that has had serious game time.
“Yes, they (Knights) have had at least three trials, already played the North Coast Academy and a couple of the Sydney clubs,” Kenny said.
“So the Knights will have an advantage in game preparation and match fitness but we have trained well. After last weekend, the way they have trained the last two sessions has been very impressive. They have done extremely well.
“Last Sunday was physically demanding in the heat around 2pm.”
However, the players didn’t relent and, while hydrating well, gave Kenny great confidence they would play well in their first outing.
“This team is oozing with talent too,” he said.
“We have had a few pull out through injury and illness but the preparation has been as good as we could have had. We shook it up a bit last Sunday and they responded very well.”
See your ad here
That’s why he believes his Tigers “will shake them up” when they tackle the Knights at about 4.30pm Saturday.
They play after the GNA Cubs, coached by Peter Stevens, tackles the Knights Under 15s from around 3pm in their first hit out. |

Story BY : JRL Media Release

The boys from St. Catherine High lived up to their favourites tag with a comprehensive 28-4 defeat of arch-rivals Spanish Town High in the U16 decider.
Dominic Green and Kemar Anglin each scored two tries for St. Catherine while Nicholas Boreland, Mikel Facey and Tadre Wright also crossed. For Spanish Town, Romaine Smith posted their lone try. |

BUSHRANGERS ALMOST AMBUSH HUNTER
Story & Photo By : Samantha Newsam Tamworth's Northern Daily LEADER NORTHERN Inland U17s almost pulled off a stunning Junior Gold Cup upset to kick off their 2015 campaign at Gunnedah on Sunday.
It wasn’t quite to be, with Hunter scoring 14 unanswered points to sneak home 14-13.
Still, it was a promising start and a huge turnaround from last year’s 33-point thrashing.
Both results were big improvements, with the 15s earlier going down 31-5.
Prop Logan Griffiths scored the 15s’ lone try midway through the second half, crashing over after the Bushrangers had received a succession of penalties close to their line.
The 17s then gave their more fancied opponents an almighty scare.
“They were incredibly unlucky,” coach Morgan Martin said.
Morgan was bitterly disappointed not to get the win after leading for a lot of the game, but wasn’t with their performance.
“I’m absolutely delighted with how the boys played,” Martin said.
See your ad here
“They were outstanding from 1-23 and from the first minute to the last.”
He was optimistic heading in that they could do well but even he hadn’t quite expected what transpired.
“I thought we’d be competitive,” he said.
“But I was surprised by how well the boys went.”
Connor Size opened proceedings for them with a penalty.
Centre Bo Abra then stepped his way through after they almost drove over.
Hunter managed to hold them up after the goalpost had stalled their momentum.
From the scrum, half-back Jack Radford sent it out to Abra, who stepped off the right and then the left and busted through.
Size converted on half-time to put them 10 ahead at the break.
It was a deserved lead, with the Bushrangers looking the better side.
“I thought we totally controlled the game,” Martin said.
Hunter were a big side but they contained them well, he said.
“We stuck to the game plan for how we wanted to play,” he said.
That was an expansive game, and it paid dividends.
Size extended the lead to 13-nil with a second penalty barely a minute into the second half after the Bushrangers had won the ball back from the kick-off.
But from there the tide turned, with Benjamin Hall binned not long after after successive infringements from the Bushrangers in the red zone.
That was when Hunter made their move, scoring off the ensuing penalty and then right on the second drinks break to, with the conversion, take the lead.
They held possession for most of that time and just wore the undermanned Bushrangers down.
It was a measure of how well they defended though that both Hunter’s tries came while they were a man down.
The Bushrangers did have a period of possession with about five minutes to go in the red zone but couldn’t get any reward from it. |

LEBANON TAKE MIDDLE EAST AFRICA U18 RUGBY LEAGUE SERIES
Story By : LRLF PRESS RELESE
LEBANON DO DOUBLE OVER SAUDI ARABIA SELECT
Lebanon’s U18s defeated their Saudi Select counterparts in both games played in Beirut this weekend to take the MEA Junior Championship.
The young Cedars won the first match, played in stormy, cold conditions, 18-4 on Friday night before turning on the style with a 40-6 victory on Sunday.
Saudi Arabia RL Association chairman David Kinkead said, “These were probably the most physical games that Saudi and Lebanon have played in my time as head coach.
“What was most pleasing was the high level of skill on display. Both sides have made huge strides forward in terms of technique and playing ability. We are disappointed to lose but want to congratulate the Lebanese on a terrific series.”
In game one the visitors endured the type of wintry conditions seldom seen in the Gulf of Arabia, but held Lebanon to a scoreless first half.
Lebanon Youth head coach Nayef Abisaid was quick to praise the effort put in by both sides. “This was the best game between Lebanon and Saudi Select at any age group. It was solid and physical in the middle with both teams trying to dominate the ruck,” he said.
Injuries reduced the Saudis’ potency in game two and, after home stand off Ray Sabat opened the scoring on five minutes with the first of his two tries, the Lebanese were dominant under a Mediterranean sun, extending the lead to 22-0 at the break and only letting the Saudis in for one unconverted try - through Argentine-born scrum half Gonzalo Lacouna - while scoring eight.
RLEF MEA Director Remond Safi was pleased with the return of the local series after a year’s hiatus due to the political situation in Lebanon. “It was breath-taking to see the games being played at such a high skill level,” he said.
“The winner here is rugby league as this was a fantastic spectacle for the Middle East Africa region, hopefully we will see more nations meeting in upcoming MEA fixtures.”
Further MEA competition is expected this year at U16 and U14 levels.

LEBANON AND SAUDI SQUADS ANNOUNCED FOR JUNIOR MEA SERIES
The Middle East Africa junior Championship returns after a year’s absence, with the Saudi Rugby League Association’s U18s visiting Lebanon next week.
The 2014 event was cancelled due to regional instability but this year Lebanon will play Saudi Arabia Select, on 13 and 15 February at AUB’s state-of-the-art Hostler Centre.

Many of the Lebanon players will be making their debut on the international stage but will be led by experienced and talented Omar Marhaba, who has several caps from the U16 and U18 national teams, and who spent two weeks training with English teams in London in 2012.
Head coach Nayef Abi Said noted: “We have prepared as best we can, it will be a tough game as it always is against the Saudi teams, but we hope to retain our title.”
Remond Safi, RLEF MEA Regional Director, said: “It should be great event with both nations fielding new-look sides this year and, with the relative calm in the country, hopefully we are able to see other MEA Championship games return to the calendar.”

AERL STARTS SCHOOLS RUGBY LEAGUE PROGRAMME IN VALENCIS
Story By : ASOCIACIÓN ESPAÑOLA DE RUGBY LEAGUE Press Release
Rugby league is being introduced to schools in Spain with the first part of a programme launched successfully in Guadassuar, Valencia.
More than 100 children aged between 8 and 14 participated in the two days led by Tony Palacios, director of the college of Spanish referees and Aitor Dàvila, director of college coaches.
The second part of the programme is scheduled for later this month in Torrent.
Tony Palacios said, “It wasn’t easy to co-ordinate so many children in just two days but the experience was fantastic for everyone.
“They could not wait to tell us how much they had enjoyed it, as did their teachers, and it is possible that rugby league will be included in the school studies plan of Guadassuar next year.”
Aitor Dàvila added, “The Rugby League School project hopes to be a support for the clubs. If everything goes as we hope, Almogàvers XIII and Torrent Tigers could soon have their first youth teams.”
“Rugby League is fantastic for kids, it is easy to learn and encourages camaraderie and teamwork among them. We are very pleased with this result.” |

SCHOOLS RUGBY LEAGUE SET TO RE-START IN LEBANON
Story By : LRL Media Release
A revitalised Lebanese schools rugby league competition is set for kick off in two regions, after the LRLF held positive talks with the Ministry of Education to re-introduce the sport to PE teachers.
The Mount Lebanon group will see Antonine International School (AIS) defend their U18 title against International College, Saint Frances Hamra and Saint Joseph Kornet Chehwan.
In the North group, champions Notre Dame Du Balamand - one of the original rugby league-playing schools - will face Al Malaab, Al Jadida and Namouzaj High Schools at U18 level.
The majority of schools expect to have at least one, and in some cases two, additional age groups at U14 and U16.
Each team will play every other in its division before two regional finals produce the two Lebanese SRL finalists. The North is seeking to reproduce this format in the three age groups.
LRLF CEO Remond Safi commented: “Over the last few years it has been very difficult to maintain developments with all the ongoing conflict, lack of fields and government problems.
“But with matters seeming to calm down a little, things look brighter.”
AIS head coach Roy Taouk added: “I feel confident going into the 2015 season. We have been pre-season training for almost three months now and it’s really helped the team to bond together, we are eager and ready.”
His St Joseph’s counterpart Nayef Abisaid, one of the LRLF’s course tutors who has been involved in the sport since it was founded in the country in 2002, echoed those sentiments: “I am looking forward to this year’s championships”, he said.
“The team has just finished their basic training skills and we are hoping to have a good run of results and get back the crown.”
North Lebanon development officer Nader Mgheit has recommenced work in some previous no-go areas in Tripoli.
Zeherieh Public School, one of the original rugby league establishments which has produced a number of good players and only recently re-opened its doors, and Abu Firas al-Hamdani school in the ravaged Jabal Mohsen area have both re-established their rugby league programmes at U14 and U16 level.
Mgheit, a sports teacher who was introduced to rugby league through the first government-sponsored Level 1 coaching course in 2008, noted: “I'm really looking forward to making the most of this opportunity since some stability has been restored over the past few months.”
The SRL competition kicks off at the end of the month and is still sponsored by telecommunications firm GMEA, the principal supporter of youth rugby league in the country. |

2nd TEST SHOULD BE A CRACKER
Story & Photo's By : steve monty /
The 2nd Test against the French National Under 18s tonight should be a cracker with some of the best footy players in Europe playing the Aussies.
French junior teams have been very strong and competitive over the past few years winning games against both the Australian Schoolboys & visiting AIS teams.
French rugby league seems to loose lots of quality players when kids turn 18/19, the French Rugby Union comes along with buckets full of Cash and pinches them, so tonights game really is the best of the French Juniors.

FRANCE VS AUSTRALIA - THE FRENCH GROUP
Story By : Toulouse Olympique XIII | TRANSLATED BY GOOGLE |
The staff of Team France Under-18 (U18) unveiled the list of French youth selected to challenge their Australian counterparts (the Australian Schoolboys) this Thursday, December 18, on the lawn of Arnauné Stade des Minimes. Kick-off at 19h.
Despite losing 20-30, the U19 (under 19 years) tricolor held a candle to the Australian Schoolboys Monday (15/12), from left Catalans Dragons lair of the Gilbert Brutus Stadium (summary of the match to regain Dragons on TV, the official channel of the Catalans Dragons). Led by Olympian Valentin YESA, which was the seventh selection as captain and man of the match at the end of the meeting, then the Blues may have inspired the U18 who, before their meeting in Toulouse, now have proof that anything is possible.
They will need to be overcome if they want to compete with their opponents of the day. Indeed, the vast majority of players of that Australian selection are already under contract with a club NRL, accustomed to the best, to what is best in rugby league in that category. This is a big challenge for the young Roosters.
Composed of a large contingent of elements from the formation of the Catalans Dragons (8), as well as players already playing in Elite 1, as Fouad YAHA (St Esteve / XIII Catalan), Mickael GOUDEMAND (Avignon) and Alexandre MICKALÉZYK (Limoux), the French team still has good arguments to make. Rest now realize the hopes in it Thursday on the grounds of Arnauné facing the global benchmark.
This should be without a doubt a very high level of game that will be played at the stadium Minimes, the entrance to this event is free.
The French group: Etienne FERRET (Salford) - Paul Izard (Dragons U19), Arthur ROMANO (Dragons U19), Vincent ALBERT (Carcassonne), Fouad YAHA (St Esteve-XIII Catalan), (o) Lucas ALBERT (Dragons U19) (m) Alix DA COSTA (Dragons U19) - Quentin QUEMENER (St Gaudens), Yohan VEVE (Avignon), Lambert BELMAS (Dragons U19) - Jordan DEZARIA (Dragons U19), Alexandre MICKALÉZYK (Limoux) - Mickaël GOUDEMAND (Avignon).
Replacements: Nicolas Pomié (Lescure) Saloty MENDY (Avignon), Franck MARIA (Dragons U19), Anthony DELGADO (Carcassonne). Substitute Bruno CASTANY (U19 Dragons). |

Story & Photo's By : Steve Monty /
Wednesday at 11:30 at Jubilee Oval Kogarah, the two of best schoolboy footy teams in the world get it on in the 2014 gio Schoolboy Cup Grand Final.
The mighty Patrician Brothers Catholic College, Blacktown face Endeavour Sports High School in tomorrow's Grand Final which will be a cracker, both schools are undefeated in their campaigns this year.
Both Patrician Brothers and Endeavour have match winner in their 17 mans teams, it seems John Olive (Endeavour SHS) and Robert Jennings (Patties) will not be playing due to injuries, but this will not stop the Patricain Brothers machine to switch on. The Patties forwards will try to dominate the speedy Endeavour team.
There are plenty of interesting match up's all over the paddock, too many for this short narrative.
The most inportant question is : Who will win? We will all know by 12:40 Wednesday arvo.
Good luck to both teams, just to get this far in the Toughest Schoolboys Competition on the planet is so huge, not many players get this opportunity - Good luck to both teams, Can't wait for kick off.
