ITT WATER AND WASTEWATER 15'S DIVISION Ten teams from across the state travelled to Nyngan to take part in the fifth Nyngan Easter Rugby League Challenge. NRL Junior Development sides Parramatta and Newcastle attended for the fifth consecutive year while Penrith and Western Suburbs attended for the third year in a row. They were joined by South West Sydney Academy of Sport, CRL Far West Academy, Group XI and Group XIV. The event officially got underway on Friday evening at the Nyngan Showground where the teams were welcomed by Bogan Shire Council Mayor, Ray Donald. Following the formalities the teams had to display their bush skills participating in the Golden Tusk Games. Players had to cook damper, boil billy’s, milk cows and herd and shear sheep, with Parramatta the surprise winners of the Games. The challenge kicked off on Saturday morning with CRL Far West Academy taking on Parramatta 1 in the ITT Water and Wastewater 15’s division. The first match of the Straits Open Boys division saw the CRL Far West Academy continue the good start to the day by defeating Western Suburbs 14-12. The game was evenly balanced throughout but the Academy’s defence in the final 10 minutes saw them secure a major upset. The match of the day on Sunday was the final of the ITT Water and Wastewater 15’s division between CRL Far West Academy and Group XI. The event was boosted by the attendance of three high profile guests. Sean Hampstead attended for the fourth consecutive year refereeing several games over the weekend including the final of the ITT Water and Wastewater 15’s division. The event also had an international flavour with two players from Papua New Guinea playing for the CRL Far West Academy sides. At the conclusion of the Challenge each team was asked to nominate the Most Valuable Player (MVP) throughout the Challenge: CRL Far West Academy Opens – James White At the presentations Col Wright, CRL Far West Academy Head Coach and event organiser, was once again honoured that teams have travelled to Nyngan to participate in the 2011 event. Col was the driving force in starting up the Challenge back in 2007. “The teams performance both on and off the field over the weekend has been excellent. There was some great rugby league played over the weekend, and I believe that the standard has once again improved this year. There were also some highlights off the field with the players participating in the Golden Tusk Games” said Mr Wright. “It was a great experience for our Far West Academy sides to play against some of the best junior talent in the state, and I know they had been looking forward to the challenge. Our 15’s team defeated Parramatta during the tournament and finished runner up while the Opens team had a terrific win over Western Suburbs” “It’s great to see Newcastle and Parramatta travelling out for the fifth consecutive year, and Wests and Penrith for their third year. It shows that these clubs see the Challenge as a great experience for their players. | AS A RULE, REF LOVES HIS WORK DETAILS ON REFEREEING COURSES LIKE most players, Parramatta district referee Philip Sung is looking forward to the start of the local rugby league season. The training is over, the boots are shined and the whistle is at the ready to be blown. "It's a good time of year," he said. "I'm looking forward to the season and I've trained hard for a big 2011." This year will be his ninth in control as a referee in the Parramatta district. What started as a part-time job has turned into a full-time hobby and, he hopes, one day a full-time job. "When I first started I just thought it'd be a cool job but I didn't realise all the rules I had to learn," said Sung, who is part of the NSW inter-district squad of referees. Gradually I've worked my way up and learnt to be more confident — which I've taken into my everyday life. Refereeing builds character and I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a challenge who enjoys rugby league." FOOTY LADS’ SKILLS BOOST FOUR young players from the Group 4 and Group 19 area were improving their footy skills at this week’s CRL camp at Farrer High School. Moree juniors Charlie Shearer (13), Brent McDonald (14) and Coen Vindugteren (13) and Gunnedah’s Elliott Jones (14) learned and practised plenty of new skills they can take into the new season at the three-day camp. The Moree boys all play for the same team in the Group 19 juniors league. Charlie is a second rower, Brent a lock and Coen plays at fullback for the Boars under 14s and have already played a couple of games this year, including one competition game. Brent also represented the Group last year and has made the Group side again this season. Elliott has also been a Group 4 representative in the past two years but missed out on selection this season. Maybe after a bit of extra work at the camp he will get back into the representative arena down the track. He plays for the Gunnedah under 15s in the new Group 4 inter-town competition that kicks off after the Easter break. The foursome joined 45 other kids aged 12-16 at the camp from Tuesday to Thursday where they learned core skills and techniques they can utilise on the field. For the four locals it was their first time at the camp but they may come back again next year. A lot of kids do. “There’s eight or 10 of the boys who have been coming for a few years,” CRL development officer Peter Stevens said. |

The AAMI CRL Under 18 Regional Championships kicked off on the weekend at Mittagong. Eight teams competed over 2 days with their chance to make it through to the Semi Finals for the Tom Nelson Shield. Western Rams, Southern Redbacks, Newcastle Rebels and Central Hunter Power all showed their dominance by going through undefeated for the whole of the weekend and now face each other at Rescoe Park, Singleton on Saturday 30th April. Trent Barrett was in attendance on the weekend addressing each side before they took to the field. Western Rams under-18s coach Steve Sutton has implored his team not to get ahead of itself despite winning its way through to the semi-finals of the NSW Country Championships. The Rams came from behind to beat Oxley 26-18 on Saturday before having an easier time of it in a 54-4 win against Bidgee Bulls yesterday. The wins ensure the Rams progress to the next stage of the tournament and a likely trip to Singleton in a fortnight to face Southern Division. Dubbo CYMS fullback Charly Runciman scored three tries at the weekend, including a key four-pointer in the first match, which brought Western Division back into the match in the final 10 minutes. “We were in a bit of trouble before Charly scored that try,” Sutton said. “We scored again after that and hit the lead, then Andrew Mendes took an intercept in the last minute to seal it for us. “Myself and the rest of the coaching staff had a few heart attacks in that match but against Bidgee we were far more comfortable.” With a spot in the final beckoning, Sutton said he told his team not to get complacent. A recent trial win against Southern indicates the Rams will be favoured heading into the semi-final but recent history suggests the Western side could be vulnerable. “The last two years we have played like a million dollars at this stage of the championships then lost,” Sutton said. “Straight after the second match a few of the boys that played last year told the others we couldn’t get carried away with themselves. “We will have a fortnight off now but I will keep drilling it into the boys that we have to respect our opponents.” Western will go into the semi-final without the services of Mudgee lock Tom Shearman, who suffered a broken leg in the opening five minutes of the match against Oxley. “It’s a shame for young Tom because he broke his leg in August last year and then he has broken the same leg again now,” Sutton said. “We had an 18-man squad so we were able to bring a player in the second game but we are all feeling really bad for Tom because he is a good young player with a bright future in the game.” |

Ahead of their upcoming two-Test series against France, the England Youth team have received backing from two of the Engage Super League’s most familiar faces with Hull KR full-back Shaun Briscoe and St Helens captain Paul Wellens voicing their support for the youngsters. England’s under-16s will take to the pitch for the first Test against France at Grattan Stadium, Bradford on Good Friday (2.30pm) and Wellens and Briscoe dropped into training recently to share their experience with the players ahead of their big test. “These guys are the cream of the crop at their age and there are a lot of talented young players here,” said Briscoe. “There are a lot of young kids in our game who really have the ability to go to the top. “Experience is something that you can’t really teach, but if we can pass on some tips that will give these young lads a head start come game time then it will help these players in the long run and help us develop on the international stage. “These guys have a big test series against France coming up. From what I’ve seen there is plenty of talent in this squad and they have the ability to do themselves justice on the pitch and be competitive against any opposition so long as they believe in themselves and enjoy representing their country.” Both Briscoe and Wellens graduated through the youth ranks themselves, with Briscoe representing the Academy side in 2001 and Wellens wearing the junior national team’s full-back jersey in 1998, so both know how important early exposure to the international stage can be. “To pull on a jersey with the national badge on it is a very special feeling,” said Wellens. “Once you’ve done it once, you want to do it again and you can’t replicate the pressure that comes with playing a full international and to get that experience at a young age certainly sets you on the way to making the full international step. “I played GB Academy games when I was younger and I think one of the biggest things I got from it was to enjoy the experience. I think if you go into any game looking to enjoy the occasion then it probably brings out the best in you as a player. “People are realising that the talent is out there and the Super League clubs are really pushing their home-grown development and that will help benefit the national team in the long term. “These guys are young and will play without any fear so they just need to go out there and enjoy themselves and I’m sure they’ll give a good account of themselves.” Both of England’s games against France on Good Friday, April 22 (2.30pm) and Tuesday April 26 (2.30pm) will be played at Grattan Stadium, Bradford. The Nyngan community is all set for the fifth annual Nyngan Easter Rugby League Challenge to be held over the Easter Long Weekend, 22nd – 25th April. There will be ten teams travelling from across the state all vying to be crowned winners of the Challenge. Parramatta and Newcastle will be coming back for their fifth time while Western Suburbs and Penrith are returning for their third visit. They will be joined by South West Sydney Academy of Sport, CRL Far West Academy, Group XI and Group XIV. The Challenge will get underway at the Nyngan Showground on Friday evening where they will be officially welcomed by Bogan Shire Mayor, Ray Donald, and Aboriginal elder, Kenny Leigh. Following the welcoming ceremony athletes will participate in the ‘Golden Tusk’ Games where they will try to cook damper, boil a billy, milk cows and muster sheep. The rugby league action will kick off on Saturday morning at Larkin Oval with the CRL Far West Academy taking on Parramatta 1 in the opening match of the ITT Water and Wastewater 15’s division. This will be followed by 11 hours of non stop rugby league action. In a change from previous years one match will be played at the junior league oval at 4pm with CRL Far West Academy taking on Group XIV. “The weekend will be full of entertainment and we hope that we will see a big crowd at Larkin Oval to watch some of the best juniors in NSW go round” said event organiser, Col Wright. Sunday will see the final two matches of the Straits Open boys games played along with the finals series of the ITT Water and Wastewater 15’s. Matches will start at 10:00am and conclude at 4pm when the presentations will be held. “It’s too hard to predict the winners of both divisions at this stage” commented Mr Wright “Really any of the teams could come out on top which is quite exciting” “There are three or four 15’s side that could win while in the Opens all teams are in with a realistic shot” “I’m sure that Penrith will be looking to finally win the Straits Opens boys division after finishing runner up the last two years.” The committee hopes to see a bumper crowd at larking Oval over the two days. GROUP 4 juniors have a new identity and a new competition. The junior rep teams will play as the Stars this season with the Southern Cross as their emblem. It’s part of a fresh look to the junior structure within the group and will go hand in hand with the introduction of a new competition incorporating teams from Gunnedah and Narrabri. The inaugural Group 4 junior rugby league competition will run alongside the regular Saturday Tamworth Minor League competition but in the 13s, 14s and 15s divisions the existing teams will also play against Gunnedah and Narrabri on a home and away basis. The competition will kick-off on April 30, as will the local minor league, with eight teams in the U13s, six in the 14s and five in the 15s. It’s an exciting venture for the group and one for which it is seeking sponsorship. It has put the call out for sponsors for both the competition and the rep sides. The rep sides will play teams from Group 19 and Group 21 and other groups over the course of the season, and are already starting their preparations with the coaches having been appointed and the 15s side already selected. They’ll be coached by Tamworth’s Jason Leonard, the 13s Tamworth’s Mick Schmiedel and the 14s Narrabri’s Mark Bentley. Their trials are scheduled for May 22 in Tamworth. On the same day the 15s will play trial matches against Groups 19 and 21. Anyone interested in sponsorship can contact Paul Richards on 0427 687609. He’s the group secretary and treasurer. The new president is Michael Gleeson and the vice-president Stuart Hatton. The group hopes that the new competition will be a starting point to expansion and reaching a bigger area in the future. |

 The Western Rams will kick off their bid to break their recent semi-final curse this Saturday when they travel to Mittagong to take on the Oxley Pioneers in the first round of the under-18s NSW Country Championships. The Rams, which includes Dubbo duo Charly Runciman (CYMS) and James McKinnon (Macquarie), also boasts no fewer than six Bathurst Panthers players. Coach Steve Sutton believes he has a squad littered with strong combinations from various clubs and groups. “It makes things so much simpler having those Bathurst boys in there who have played so much football together but you add in to that the fact that most of the boys in the squad have played a lot of representative footy together anyway,” Sutton said. “There are a few new ones in there, Cody Robbins is one of them who haven’t been there so much in the past and have popped up this year with some great footy but the nucleus of the side have played a lot with one another.” “To be quite honest, the last session we had together in Forbes on Sunday - the players could have run it themselves, there is a great understanding across the whole squad.” Among the key figures for Western will be halves pairing Jacob Neill (Nyngan) and Toby Evans (Parkes) who Sutton says are delighted to have the strikepower of players like Bathurst pair Andrew Mendes and Jake Davis as well as Robbins outside them. He says that he will not burden the players with too much structure or set pieces, and wants them to simply play what is in front of them. “I have been really careful not to try and overburden them with plays, I want us to keep it basic coming out of our end-zone and from there just play it as they see it,” the coach said. “When I applied for the job one of the things I told them was that I wanted to keep it simple. “When the boys get to this level, they know how to play and don’t need 20 different plays in their head. I think we will play a pretty open style unless we are in our own 20 or 40 metres area.” Sutton is expecting Oxley to be a forward-heavy side who use their size to their advantage and admits that given a choice he would not have picked them as a first-up opponent. “I’m not sure about their halves but they have some pretty quick outside backs too. They won the title three years ago, made the finals two years ago and were in the semis last year so they are strong,” he said. “But if you are going to win the competition you have to beat them at some stage so better to get it out of the way early I suppose.” A win will see Western play either Central Hunter Power or the Bidgee Bulls in round two, while a loss will pit them against the Northern Thunderbolts or the Newcastle Rebels. |

A special jumper will feature at St John’s College for decades to come after a recent presentation was made to the school by Martin Cook and John Walkom. The St John’s College 40-year jersey includes the photo and career highlights of St John’s two internationals, Dean Pay and Andrew Ryan. The jumper will be on display next to other jumpers in the college’s human movement centre alongside Beau Robinson’s Waratah jumper from the 2008 Super 14 final, and Andrew Ryan’s first State of Origin jumper. Long time teacher and principal Warren Frew was on hand at the presentation of the jumper and reflected on the role that rugby league has had on the college. “Rugby league has always been played at the college, and it has been one of the extracurricular activities that has given the college it’s identity in western NSW, and on the larger stage as well,” he said. “Seeing the older faces of past teachers and students with the current students is pleasing, as it further enhances the concept of tradition, and the wider community support for the college.” Paul ‘Pop’ Fahy, who was named as coach of the 40-year team, was also present. Former Men Of League CEO Martin Cook, who has just returned to Dubbo with his young family to live, and local rugby league identity John Walkom were also present. Current students Isaah Yeo, Billy Sing and Ben Marlin accepted the jumper on behalf of the college. Rugby League is alive and well this year in the college with more than 90 boys trialling for the junior league teams. St John’s has a proud 40 year-plus tradition of playing rugby league with about 40 former students having been graded with Sydney and NRL teams over the decades. At the moment former St John’s students Andrew Ryan and Daniel Conn are playing in the NRL, and class of 2009 product Lionel O’Mally is playing hooker in the Bulldogs Toyota Cup squad. Former student from the 1980s Dean Pay is in charge of the Melbourne Toyota Cup side while Martin Meredith, who was a student in the 70s, currently heads the NSWRL Academy at Narrabeen. The current generation of students at St John’s are continuing the tradition of rugby league at the college with enthusiasm. Recently 10 boys travelled to Forbes for the Western NSW Combined Catholic Colleges trials. Marshall Sing, Joe Stageman, Mitch Dunlop, Bailey Jenkins, Harry Kempston, Kaide Rapley, Jesse Dunlop, Billy O’Connor and Hewett Haycock trialled in the under-15s, and Isaah Yeo in the Opens. Sing (five-eighth) and Dunlop (wing) were successful in being selected to attend the NSW Southern Country Catholic trials, while Isaah Yeo was picked in the Opens. Those games will be played in Wagga Wagga early next term. |

| KEEBRA DOWN COOMBABAH IN RENOUF AND HANCOCK CUPS Keebra Park kept their unbeaten streak in junior Broncos competitions this week with wins in the Under 13 and 14 age groups over Coombabh State High. The 13's managed a 42-12 scoreline over with some entertaining structured football while in the fourteens it was a much closer result with Keebra edging out Coombabah by 2 points 20-18. Both these teams have been training well and the fourteens was a particularly good win over the Coombabah "State" champion side. In the earlier game the Keebra Struddy's side proved too strong for Sandgate and made it 3 from 3 on a night that was perfect for football. Next week is the Easter break but there is plenty more football to come in term two so watch this space. |

Cody Robbins shaking hands with Penrith Panthers recruitment manager Jim Jones to confirm his two-year deal with the NRL club. Robbins joins a long list of players to have come through the junior ranks in Orange and be given an opportunity to achieve their dreams. The 17-year-old said to be signed by the Panthers was a dream come true. “I’m so happy with what I have achieved with my footy. Making the under 20s means everything to me. I am very grateful for the opportunity,” Robbins said. It has been an incredible 2011 already for the former Bloomfield junior. Not only has he earned high praise from CYMS premier league captain-coach and former NRL utility Mick Sullivan, but Robbins has also been selected in the Western Academy, Group 10 under 18s and Western Rams under 18s squads. The speedster said he just wants to continue evolving his game. “I have improved heaps from playing at a higher level,” he said. This will be Robbins’ last year in the green and gold colours of CYMS as his contract with the Panthers begins in 2012. Robbins will try to make it into the club’s Toyota Cup under 20s team and hopefully, after 2013, their NRL team. Currently Parramatta Eels’ Daniel Mortimer and Warriors half James Maloney are two former Orange boys playing in the NRL. Robbins said his main goal for the rest of the year was to play as many representative games as possible and also continue to shine for CYMS each weekend. “I just have to thank Michael Sullivan ... my agent Steve Shearer and his assistant Adam Przybyla for helping me out,” Robbins said. |

 HYBRID FOOTBALL KICKS OFF WORLD WIDE EXCLUSIVE BY :  An announcement will be made today regarding the formulation of a "hybrid" rugby league/rugby union game. The game has been in the planning stages for sometime now and whereas previous "hybrid" games consisted of playing half a game of league and half a game of union, this game really is its own code with a unique set of rules. The brainchild of Sydney entrepreneur Phil Franks in conjunction with Bob Dwyer, Bob Fulton and Mark Ella, the "hybrid" has already been tested with a one of game between Keebra Park SHS and The Southport School which was held in November 2010. This game allowed for tweaking of the rules and the next game will be held in Sydney between Keebra Park SHS and St Augustines Brookvale at the Brookvale Oval on May 11th at 7pm. In future it is hoped that this game will be played at the senior levels with announcements expected to be made in the near future. |

The roots of the rugby codes can be traced to early football history, through the playing of ball games which bear little resemblance to modern sports. William Webb Ellis picked up the round ball and ran with it at Rugby School in England to mark the beginnings of rugby union. In 1895 rugby football was beset with a schism that resulted in the formation of the Northern Rugby Football Union (NRFU) and rugby league was born. Rugby league took off in Australia in 1908. A major motivation for the schism was the payment of players. Rugby league players were paid. Rugby union players were not. Although coming from the same beginnings, the two rugby codes are two distinct traces, breeds, varieties, or species of football. The lessons of history tell us that, as with everything in life, football codes are in a constant state of evolution. Life is about evolution. The evolution of the rugby codes should be embraced. Now is the ideal time for the two codes to cooperate as one and challenge their competitors, AFL and football who are encroaching into the rugby league and union territory to regain market share in a win win scenario for both codes. The annual event will have the major benefit of bringing substantial additional revenue into each code, revenue which each code would not otherwise be able to have access to. The Hybrid Code may assist in alleviating the problems associated with the restrictions imposed by the salary cap with the games’ marquee players having representation in this unique annual event. Other sporting codes such as AFL and soccer are increasingly encroaching on the rugby league and rugby union markets. The Hybrid Code will provide a vehicle for the two rugby codes to tackle this emerging threat on a united front. The Hybrid Code is an opportunity for the two rugby codes, not a threat to them. For the codes, the opportunity to jointly own a majority ownership in an exciting new concept and to control its progression and development. It also creates a lucrative new revenue stream and may assist in alleviating some of the pressure on clubs to keep their superstar players under the salary cap with a significant one-off annual Hybrid Code match payment. “The Hybrid Code will never be played without the consent of the rugby league and rugby union governing bodies”. For the sponsor, the opportunity to partner with a unique and exciting product. For the major events organisation, the opportunity to bring tens of thousands of visitors to their state. For the players, the opportunity to test their skills against the best of the best and the opportunity to earn valuable additional income commensurate with their elite status. And for the fans, pure rugby excitement. As a player Fulton won three premierships with Manly in the 1970s, the last as captain. He represented Australia on 47 occasions, seven times as captain. He had a long coaching career at the first grade level, taking Manly to premiership victories in 1987 and 1996. He coached the Australian national team to 40 Tests and World Cup games. In 1985 he was selected as one of the initial four post-war “Immortals” of the Australian game and in 2008 he was named in Australia's team of the century. He is an Australian Rugby Union legend. He is a member of the order of Australia (AM) and an inductee to the Sport Australia Hall of Fame” Between 1980 and 1984 he represented Australia 25 times, captaining the team for the 1982-83 seasons. In his final test season, the historical Grand Slam Tour of Britain and Ireland, Mark scored a try in each of the four Test matches, a feat that still hasn’t been repeated today. Amongst the recognition he has received for his outstanding sportsmanship, in 1982 Mark was named Young Australian of the Year and in 1983 made a Member the Order of Australia (AM). He has also been inducted into the Sports Australia Hall of Fame and the International Rugby Hall of Fame Inaugural XV. Well as the season starts to gain momentum there as been a great buzz around the school with all teams looking good as they head into the business part of the competitions. The junior sides have recorded some good wins and this week see themselves up against Coombabah at Southport Tigers. The Open A's kicked off their campaign with a solid 42-0 win over the fancied Marsden outfit and the Under 15's recorded a great victory against Marsdens 15's. There was a good crowd at the Logan Brothers ground and all present witnessed a fine encounter. Last weekend (April 10th) saw a combined Opens-Struddys side take on the Northern Rivers Group 18 Representative team and get away with a 20-18 result after a slow sluggish start that saw them 18-0 down in the first half. Well done boys a good comeback and no excuses. This week has seen the action shift to the hybrid Union/League training that has been going on for 18 months or so now and the upcoming clash with St. Augustines in Sydney. |

NEWCASTLE REPRESENTATIVE SQUADS SHOW STRONG PERFORMANCES Newcastle Schoolboys Representative Squads came away with all age groups putting in strong performances in very hot conditions. The under 13 and under 15 teams both won the final of their groups, the under 14 team although short on numbers played courageously, the under 16 team missed the final by 0.4% in a count back. Newcastle led the points score for the Knights Cup all day but was edged out in the very last round by Central Coast. | KNIGHTS CUP The inaugural Knights Cup Competition will be held this Sunday 10 April at Salamander Bay Sports Complex. Five associations will be competing including Newcastle, Maitland, Central Coast, Taree/Port Macquarie and Kempsey/Woolgoogla. Knights Coach Rick Stone originally came up with the idea of the Cup as he saw it as an opportunity for young players to represent their region and the broader region. “It is about giving our kids, who do a fair bit of training over the summer, the chance to play at this level,” Stone Said. “It is a fantastic competition that allows kids to display their talents in front of representatives of the Knights as well as assess coaches, players and programs that are in place.” As the Knights will be travelling up North for their round five game against the Brisbane Broncos, First grade player Neville Costigan and Strategic Development Manager Keith Onslow will be on hand to present the Cup. The round robin competition will commence at 9.00am and Grand finals will be played at 4.00pm. It is expected that 2500 people will attend the competition where they will witness the playing talents of U13s, U14s, U15s and U16s. In their second game, the Magpies were 42-24 winners over the Toowoomba Clydesdales, while Gold were pushed hard by the Sunshine Coast Falcons to win 20-10, with Wells again a multiple try-scorer with two. In other games this weekend, Norths (who are currently at the top of their pool) will face off against Wynnum Manly in another important clash. In the Cyril Connell Cup, both the Gold Coast teams are travelling well and are yet to drop a game which sets up a great game in the final round of the competition. GROUP 4 officials might have been able to fit Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School’s talented under 18 and 16 sides into their town-based junior competition. How to fit Farrer’s junior teams into the G4 U18 and 16 competitions has been a rugby league conundrum eluding a solution for a number of years. Group 4 secretary Ross Hamilton said Farrer’s involvement in 2011 would be split. “We have had a lot of problems trying to fit them in,” Hamilton said. “Farrer’s 16s will play for North Tamworth this season and be known as the Farrer Bears. “Their 18s will play for both North and West Lions – exactly how many go to both clubs we don’t know yet.” Hamilton said Group 4’s representation in the Oxley Pioneers under 18 side was also good considering the number of players available for next year’s Under 18 rep side. “Ron Dellar (Group 4 coach) told me a lot of his side can play again next year,” Hamilton said. “Young Casey Burgess (Gunnedah) was a player of the grand final last year and is a very good kid with another left in the 18s. “There are a lot of good kids out there and there are a few already signed with NRL clubs. “You only have to look at big Tommy Learoyd-Lahrs. “He’s really kicked on with Canberra since he played Group 4 and Northern Division (now Oxley Pioneers). “Tommy and Ben Smith (Parramatta) were both in the same junior rep teams and are now playing in the NRL.” Group 4 had seven players selected in the Oxley Pioneers for the upcoming Country Championships while Group 19 had five juniors named in the Northern Thunderbolts after last Saturday’s trials in Glen Innes. Northern Thunderbolt regional area manager Kevin Hill was delighted with those trials, pitting two squads from the Northern Rivers against a New England Group 19 side. He said regional selectors and the coaching staff were “delighted with the quality of players who gathered for the annual Tri-series”. He said the Northern Thunderbolt squad now has a regional training camp at Lennox Head Sport & Recreation Centre this weekend in preparation for the April 16/17 Country Under 18 Championship in Mittagong. o Group 19’s 2011 season starts in Moree and Tenterfield on Saturday, with Moree Boomerangs playing Guyra and Tenterfield at home to Uralla. The Far West community of Nyngan will again host the Nyngan Easter Rugby League Challenge in 2011 over the Easter Long Weekend, 22nd – 25th April. This will be the fifth successive year the event has ran, and promises to be a great weekend of rugby league action. The Challenge will be contested across two divisions, Opens (U18s) and 15 years boys. The 2011 line up includes Parramatta, Newcastle, Western Suburbs, Penrith, CRL Far West Academy of Sport, South West Sydney Academy of Sport, Group XIV and Group XI. The 2011 Challenge will be boosted with several high profile guests attending the event. Premiership winning coach and NRL commentator, Phil Gould, will be in attendance along with former Australian and premiership player Rod “Rocket” Reddy who is now the Parramatta Eels recruitment manager. Sean Hampstead will once again be returning to Nyngan to referee and mentor the local referees during the Challenge. Event Coordinator Col Wright is excited with how the event is shaping up for 2011. “The event is coming along nicely. Former Australian Schoolboy player, Peter Denham, has been appointed the Australian Schoolboy Team Coach for 2011. Peter was a member of the 1990 undefeated Australian Schoolboy Team that included players of the calibre of James Smith, James Shepherd, Russell Hill, Rodney Howe, Josh Stuart, Jason Death and Glenn Grief. He then had an extensive playing career in Group 2, Group 6 and the Illawarra region. He has been teaching at Bellingen High School since 1997. Peter has coached at schoolboy level since 1996 on the NSW North Coast. He coached the NSW Combined High Schools under 18yrs Teams at the Australian Schoolboy National Championships in 2007, 2008 and 2009, winning the National title in 2007 and 2008. He has also coached in the Group 2 competition for several years with Bellingen and was the Group 2 Representative Team Coach in 2009, 2010 and again in 2011 at the NSW Country Rugby League Championships. The 2011 Australian Schoolboy Team will be selected following the Under 18yrs National Championships at St Marys NSW from Sunday, 10 July to Friday, 15 July 2011. The Australian Team will depart for New Zealand on Thursday, 29 September 2011 for a two International match tour. The Dubbo CYMS under-18s have rebounded from the group trials to claim a win in the first round of the Skilled Challenge. Despite things looking tight at half-time the Fishies managed to scream ahead in the second half, shooting down the Orange Hawks 32-12. Highlights included two tries by Nick McNaughton and four conversions to Mick Lewin. Coach Justin Yeo said the result was good for both the club and players. “It was pleasing to see on the weekend both grades get through with a win against two sides that were quite strong. “So it was impressive and it was a good start for the club,” he said. “We played a few weeks ago when we had a group trial and we were pretty much outclassed by a few teams because we are so young but they’ve have improved over the last few weeks and they’ve put in a good performance. “Being pretty young they need to learn how to play football particularly at a senior level. “The older blokes there are starting to improve, the attitude of the side, just maturity I suppose, is starting to improve too. After the group trials Yeo put the players through their paces having them concentrate on the basics. “We just worked on a few things ... how to control, how to build pressure, and complete sets of six - just really simple things that perhaps hasn’t been at the forefront of their minds over the last couple of years,” he said. Yeo highlighted the performances of Lincoln Cavanaugh, Ethan Coyle and Isaah Yeo on Sunday. “And it was a very good team effort as well, we are not a team of superstars but they are stating to gel well together,” he said. The team will face Orange CYMS in the next round of the Skilled Challenge. Dubbo Macquarie is in flying form to take out its third consecutive Skilled Challenge in 2011 in the under-18s. The young side delivered a stomping to Bathurst’s St Pat’s 52-4 on Sunday at Dubbo’s Apex Oval. The Skilled Challenge is a preseason competition involving teams from both the Group 10 and 11 leagues. After the first round Macquarie move to the top of the table based on an impressive for-and-against. Stand out player on Sunday was team captain five-eighth Kieran Shipp who managed a hat-trick. Aside from some “individual brilliance” it was “teamwork” that saw the side cruise to victory, manager Trevor Kennedy said. “They played to their structure and their game plan,” he said. “And the reserves would come on and give the other blokes a blow because it was pretty warm out there. “That’s our second game we’ve had together as a team and the boys are gelling well.” Going up against the Lithgow Workies in the next match Macquarie will have to do without front-rower James McKinnon who is off to play for the Macquarie Rams. “He gives us a lot of go forward so the other boys will have to step up to the plate,” Kennedy said. Such players include second-rower Hayden Chapman, centre Mason Williams and fullback Blaize Fuller. GIRLS TO GIVE FOOTY A GO KEMPSEY will play host to around 100 girls next Tuesday as they prove that footy is not just for the boys. The Primary School Girls Football Festival has been organised by Communities NSW - Sport and Recreation so local girls aged 10 to 12 have the chance to try sports traditionally dominated by males. Participants will try their hand at rugby league, rugby union, AFL and soccer during the festival at Verge St Oval from 10am to 2pm. “This exciting local event provides a fun, non-competitive environment for girls to get active and try something new,” Sport and Recreation northern region cluster co-ordinator Lyn Larsen said. “Coaches from rugby league, rugby union, AFL and soccer will run rotating skill development clinics. “It’s a great chance for these girls to have a go at sports often considered to be exclusively male. “Girls should be encouraged to play more sport so they can benefit from the many health and social advantages it offers. “Research into children’s participation in sport has found that girls are less likely than boys to play organised sport outside of school hours. “They are also less likely to play more than one sport and generally play less frequently. “The Girls Footy Festival is free, fun and a great way for local girls to make new friends and learn new skills. “It’s a unique opportunity for them to learn the basics associated with the four football codes in a safe and supportive environment. “Teachers attending from local schools can also pick up some useful coaching tips.  MUCH has changed in the 18 months since a grand-final brawl put one of the oldest junior rugby-league clubs in the Penrith district into the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Under a new committee, Blacktown City continues to rebuild, with plans to return to the glory days of the 1980s and early 1990s. For the second year in a row, the revamped club will begin its season launch with a rides night on March 26 at Jack Myers Field, Blacktown. The fun night is the club's major fund-raiser of the year and aims to reinforce its stance as a family oriented club. In a first for the district, the club introduced a zero-tolerance code of conduct for players and parents after the events of September 2009. "We want people to come down and feel safe," said club secretary Craig Tasoulis. "We want to get the community in this area back behind us. Everyone is welcome and we don't turn anyone away. We also have a few juniors with Asperger's syndrome." Despite the turmoil six months earlier, almost 280 players registered to play for the club in 2010, where 15 out of 17 teams made the semi-finals. Three out of four grand-final teams were crowned premiers in what was a trouble-free year for the club. Tasoulis said the 2009 aftermath wasn't easy, where the club was subjected to death threats and break-ins but he said it's now all in the past. The club dates back to 1928 under the Blacktown RSL Club banner and celebrates its 25th anniversary as Blacktown City in 2012. | FUTURE BRIGHT FOR YOUTH ON THE RUN GROUP 4 may be struggling at senior level at the moment, but the same can’t be said of its junior ranks. After dominating Oxley Pioneer squads in recent years the Group can justifiably lay cliam to being one of the best Groups in the CRL when it comes to producing under 18s players. And that trend seems to be continuing after the Group 4 under 18s trials at Boggabri on Sunday. The team chosen to contest the Pioneers trials is a strong one, but the most startling impression from the day was the number of talented players who will still be eligible for the under 18s next year. First year under 18s like Casey Burgess from Coolah, Coonamble’s Dan Boland, Tamworth pair Mitch Dening and Kurt Aldridge, Blackville’s Logan Harris, Andy Saunders from Quirindi and Gunnedah’s Ethan Stevens all made the cut and could be there again in 2012. Several others among the five teams on display were also impressive and could have easily been selected. Coach and selector Ron Dellar has been involved with the Group side for years and also with the Pioneers as an assistant coach. He will be head coach of the Oxley side this season. He has taken young sides away before and said sometimes it’s better to let a kid develop for another year. “There were a few of those blokes who will get their chance next year,” he said. But even with so many younger players in this year’s team he is confident it will perform well against Groups 2 and 3 at Wingham in two weeks. “It’s a good side,” he said. “If we don’t win the Oxley Pioneers side will be a strong one, just not dominated by Group 4.” In Sunday’s games Gunnedah got the better of Narrabri and Moree, West Lions beat Narrabri and North Tamworth and Moree had a narrow win over North. The Group 4 side will train at Gunnedah this Saturday morning from 10.30am and again the following Wednesday evening.  In what was the culmination of the Sharks Summer Academy, teams in the 14’s, 15’s and 17’s faced off against the Canterbury Bulldogs with players showing the benefit of the intensive training program and at the same time giving an indication of their outstanding potential for the future. The under-14’s, despite being considerably outsized by their opponents, used skill and commitment in scoring three tries to two against the Bulldogs in what was an extremely impressive performance. At the conclusion of the match 14’s Academy coach Glenn Brailey singled out Jye Challenor and Jackson Garrett for special praise, however he also expressed his satisfaction with the display given by his entire playing group. In the 15’s the result was reversed, with the Bulldogs crossing for three tries to the Sharks two, however after conceding the first three tries, fighting back with two four pointers of their own was an indication of the character of the Sharks side. Marcus Pappas put in a man of the match performance for the Sharks, with his solid defence and strong charges with the football particularly pleasing to coach Chris Deiner. Ryan Cummins was busy in the backs, while Jayden Brailey tackled himself to a standstill at hooker. While the first two games may have been dominated by defence, the 17’s Sharks let the ball do the work and reaped the benefits of their entertaining play in running in seven tries to two against the more highly fancied Canterbury side. Instructed by coach Craig Holmes to use an obvious speed advantage, Taylar Garrett, playing centre and five eighth, and Jason Gray out on the wing, were amongst the Sharks to cause havoc with the Bulldogs defence, with the pair crossing for five of the Sharks seven tries. In the forwards the likes of Brandon Sweeney, Brock Cope, Kurt Dillon and Daniel Byrne more than matched their opposites, while Kurt Drysdale was enterprising from dummy half. The Sharks Summer Academy concluded with the Bulldogs games after 12 weeks of training both before and after the Christmas period. All players and coaches were selected from local area clubs, with the Academy program to progress to Sharks Academy Talent Squads (SATS) for the winter period.  MATER Dei Catholic College continued its Hardy Shield dream run last night, claiming its third consecutive title in an emotional game. Cementing a place in the record books, the potent Mater Dei outfit proved too strong for gutsy Kooringal High School, finessing the shield rookies 24-6 in a display of pure class. Despite the desperation of Kooringal’s defence, Mater Dei slathered on the tries, etching its way into Hardy Shield history. Mater Dei’s influence over the field was hard to ignore, as they managed to overcome a surging performance from Kooringal High’s Aaron Wynne and the seemingly unstoppable Brody Rigg. Kooringal hurled themselves into play in the opening minutes, with Wynne securing first points on the back of a perfectly placed pass. Not to be deterred, Mater Dei persevered attacking Kooringal’s line with back to back sets. Kooringal’s Josh Larwood and Vaughan Winnel did their best to resist the onslaught. Tiring under the pressure, Kooringal’s defence faltered letting in the first of two tries for the emerging Pat Harrrington. On the back of the precise boot of Harry Collins, Mater Dei enjoyed prime field position throughout the entire 50-minute final. As the rain continued to fall, so did Kooringal’s confidence who were kept scoreless in the second half. Outstanding for the back-to-back champions, Mater Dei frontrower and Rick Keast Medal winner Tim Jones could not contain his excitement. “I thought we played really well as a team, it was probably our best game,” he said. “We trained pretty hard leading up to this and we were really keen to keep the shield. “We weren’t cocky, but we were pretty confident that we would win.” Jones was adamant the Mater Dei reign will continue into 2012. “Most of us are in year 12 but we’ve got some really good juniors coming through so hopefully we’ll be able to come away with it again next year,” he said. |

 KEEBRA GEARS UP FOR ANOTHER BIG SEASON Its been a pretty exciting week at school this week with local sport in full swing, Bronco's Competition trials and the recent win in the Queensland Sevens Rugby Championship. The local competition is into round four and this week the boys will find themeslves up against old rivals Palm Beach Currumbin after already facing Merrimac, Robina, Marymount and Elanora. The recent midweek trials against Wavell were a good gauge of how the premier teams are travelling and there were some outstanding performances across the board with players staking their claims for spots in these highly competitive teams. Last Friday the Opens continued their dominance in the Queensland Rugby Sevens Competition with a win against Brisbane Stae High in the Qld final at Suncorp. The game was played as the curtain raiser to the Reds versus Rebels clash and was a great experience for the boys. In earlier rounds they accounted for St Joseph's College Nudgee and Wavell SHS to set up a final appearancel where they were far too strong for State High, winning 31-19. The Sevens squad will now head to Sydney to defend their National title against the best in NSW. A great effort considering that there was no specific training for this event and it was the general fitness and determination of the team that got them the results. | WAGGA HIGH FINISHES WITH WIN WAGGA High School has finished off a trying Hardy Shield campaign after last night’s dominant victory over The Riverina Anglican College. After narrowly missing out on a finals appearance after last weeks loss to Kooringal High School, Wagga High stamped its authority over a flat TRAC outfit, 32-10. In the play off for third and fourth place, Wagga High launched into a try scoring frenzy in front of a vocal crowd of supporters. Injured Wagga High sensation Nathan Rose was bursting with pride, admitting he was happy to settle in at third place. “It was just good that we got in at third,” he said. “It was good to get the win and the boys had fun so that’s the main thing.” Rose was adamant that next year’s Wagga High outfit will be a serious contender for the Hardy Shield. “We’ve got a fairly young side and most of them are in year 11, we’ve only got about three or four year 12 students that will be leaving,” he said. “Most of the other teams are full of year 12 students, but hopefully we’ll all stick together and we’ll be strong.” Fresh from the sheds, TRAC was ready to fire with lock sensation Ethan Tout scratching first points on the board within the opening three minutes. A lengthy tussle ensued, with Wagga High overcoming some strong defence from TRAC halfback Lachlan Cuell and lock Tom Adamson to clock up three successive tries before half time. Despite a gutsy effort TRAC was steamrolled by a classy Wagga High outfit in the second half. | HARDY SHIELD POSTPONED TO THURSDAY DUE TO RAIN THIS year's unusual wet weather pattern claimed yet another Wagga sporting event last night, as the heavily anticipated Hardy Shield grand final was postponed. Specially made streamers and banners were put back into storage until Thursday as it was announced the ground at the Equex Centre would be too wet to host the blockbuster schoolboy rugby league clash. With defending champion Mater Dei Catholic College set to take on the formidable Kooringal High School last night, convener Andrew Morton was disappointed to make the call to postpone. "The council called me and said the boys can play if they want to, but I didn't think it was fair," he said. "It's a bit of a shame. "The grand final night is always a really big night and the crowd gets right into it, and the rain would have kept them away. "We thought that with the leaguetag girls and the primary school kids it was a bit too much for them in the rain. "I just decided not to go through with it and to let everyone know early so we could make new arrangements." Although confident the right choice was made, Morton said the news was not received well by the respective schools. "I spoke to Daryl Lawrence (coach of Mater Dei) and his kids were spewing, Mater Dei were pumped and ready to roll - the whole school was," he said. "They have signs and everything made, but they'll just have to bring them on Thursday night instead. "Mater Dei usually bring a massive crowd, they pretty much take over the hill because it's a really good spectacle." Typically attracting a huge crowd, Morton insisted the Hardy Shield final is an event to be celebrated. Morton said after an interesting series the hard-working finalists had earned the right to play in front of a rousing crowd, adamant that last night's rain would have smothered that opportunity. "I really wanted to let the boys slog it out, and to have it in the rain would have been too sloppy and wet," he said. "Hopefully it'll be right for Thursday. "The boys have been playing every Monday and Thursday for the past few weeks so it shouldn't be too much of a change." Thursday night's match will take place at the Equex Centre, with the first game to kick off at 5.30pm, followed by the final at 7.20pm. |

MORE than two decades of anticipation will rest on his shoulders tonight, but Kooringal High School captain Tavila Feagaiga remains unfazed. Cool and collected ahead of tonight's Hardy Shield final, Feagaiga is eager to lead his team to a resounding Hardy Shield victory over strong favourites and reigning champions Mater Dei Catholic College. Brimming with excitement, the dynamic prop admitted his team will play with unprecedented passion to end Kooringal's Hardy Shield drought. "Everyone's excited, it's been something like 22 years since Kooringal last won the Hardy Shield, so it's pretty exciting," he said. "A lot of the teachers have been talking to us more and more, and the whole school is excited for us. "I guess we surprised a lot of people by making it into the final." Tipped as dark horses by many to make tonight's final, Kooringal has successfully silenced its critics and proved it is a rugby league force to be reckoned with. After trumping firm favourites Wagga High School in Thursday's preliminary final, Feagaiga is happy to accept the underdog label heading into tonight's clash. "A lot of people didn't think we'd make it into the final, but we did," he said. "Everyone thought Mater Dei would be there, you know, since the beginning of the series. "I personally think that if we work hard, we can win. "I always thought that we had a shot at making the final, not many people did, but I did." Along with try-scoring sensation Brody Rigg and calculating halfback Aaron Wynne, Feagaiga is adamant Kooringal will have the power necessary to shut down Mater Dei's key play-makers. "Aaron Wynne is going to be very important for us, he controls the backs and the forwards really well," he said. "We're just going to have to play a bit better than we did in that first game, we'll have to try and shut down Shep (Jordan Shepherd, Tim Jones and Tim Hurst." "We're all mates and we all play together so we know how they play and what they like to do, so hopefully we'll be able to do that."  JUNIOR rugby league players will be automatically sent from the field and suspended for punching, teams involved in repeated brawling will be expelled and spectators who abuse referees will be banned from attending matches under a new ''Tough Love'' policy to be introduced across Sydney this season. The crackdown, aimed at ending on- and off-field violence in junior games, gives referees and officials greater powers to deal with cases of misconduct by players or spectators. The NSW Rugby League has developed the policy, known as ''Tough Love In League'', following a number of incidents of on-field violence in recent seasons - headed by a wild brawl in the 2009 Penrith under 16s grand final that resulted in four Blacktown City players receiving bans totalling 32 years.
''We needed to get on the front foot and do something to bring it to a head because that sort of behaviour is not something we want in our game,'' the NSWRL junior coaching and development manager, Martin Meredith, said. Under the new rules, which will be applied in competitions for juniors between 13 and 17 years of age, any player who punches or strikes an opponent - even in retaliation - will be automatically sent off and if found guilty he faces a minimum one-match suspension, with three offences resulting in a mandatory 12-month ban. If more than two players are involved, referees will call ''time out'' and call for the opposing coaches to enter the field so they can calm their players. A second brawl will result in the match being automatically abandoned and the coaches called to face a code-of-conduct hearing. Any team involved in more than two abandoned matches will be automatically disqualified from the competition for the rest of the season. The new rules were welcomed by players at training last night for South Sydney's Harold Matthews Cup under 16s team. ''My club team has been involved in a fair few fights over the years,'' said Matthew Jackson, who plays for Coogee Wombats. ''But I think these rules will make some people think twice before getting involved and throwing a punch. I think most people just want to play footy.'' Alexandria Rovers player Jake O'Sullivan said: ''These rules will make it pretty clear that you have to behave on the field. I don't think most people have a problem with that.'' Coach Chris O'Connell, who is also a school teacher, welcomes the new rules but said most clubs already have a code of conduct in place that has helped to curtail violence. Cracking down on violence may even encourage more children to play league, said Willis Meehan, 15. ''Maybe there are some kids who are worried about getting hit, who play games like soccer, might now come to rugby league and some parents will be happier for their kids to get involved in the sport if there is less violence.'' |

 The Toowoomba Souths under-13s team proved to be worthy contestants at the weekend’s Mudgee Grassroots Rugby Festival after they ran out 39-0 winners over the Mudgee Wombats under-13s. The two sides clashed as the curtain raiser for the Silver Foxes exhibition match at Jubilee Oval on Saturday afternoon. A healthy crowd was on hand to cheer on both sets of boys, especially as Toowoomba was the festival’s special guest after the devastation of the Queensland floods earlier in the year. “It’s been a fantastic weekend, the hospitality that we’ve been shown is unbelievable,” team manager Gary Reis said. “We didn’t expect anything like it.” Wallabies coach Robbie Deans was even on hand to offer some words of advice both before the game and at half time. Ryan Gleeson was the star of the show for Toowoomba, as he crossed for two tries in the convincing win. Matthew Reis, Oliver Scheiwe and Brodie Carlish also bagged five-pointers in hot and sticky conditions at Jubilee Oval. However, Toowoomba coach Richard Reddan said the Mudgee boys should be proud of their efforts. “They’re a very well coached side and they played with a lot of heart, so they should hold their heads high,” he said. Wombats’ coach Rob McAlpine said he was over the moon with the spirit the game was played in. “Our boys held their own, they didn’t give up, they didn’t whinge once and there was no hands on hips,” he said. The Queenslanders had a very special mentor earlier on the day, as former Toowoomba resident Jason Little put the boys through their paces at the Glen Willow training camp. “It was great to see the Toowoomba boys here,” Little said. “But I think the parents were more excited than the kids.” The former Wallaby also said he was impressed with the talent he saw from the under-13s. “There were some fantastic guys, hopefully in the future we’ll see them,” he said. “We saw in the Mudgee-Toowoomba game that there was some very good players.” Although nothing has been officially confirmed, the two clubs are hoping the past weekend will be the start of a long and healthy partnership. “That’s definitely going to be on the cards,” Reis said of the proposal. The match was part of the Codes for a Cause day that included trial matches between top teams from both rugby league and rugby union in Bathurst and raised money for headspace. Rams coach Steve Sutton was pleased to see his team in action and he was happy given that it was their first run together. “It was good just to get together and have a bit of a run, sort out a few combinations and we’ve got that out of the way and with no injuries, which is a bonus,” he said. “I thought defensively we were really good. They were camped on our line pretty well in the second half and they got across for one try and in the first half they scored a lucky one. “In attack we’re still working on our combinations but there were some really nice tries, the Keiran Cubby one looked really slick.” Western opened the scoring with an early try to lead 6-0 but it didn’t take long for the visitors to hit back although the missed conversion left them trailing by four. That was as close as as Redbacks would get though with further tries to Charly Runciman, Jake Davies and Blake Seager giving Western a 22-4 lead at the break. They were the first to score through Orange CYMS flyer cody Robbins when play resumed to blow the lead out to 26-4 to all but guarantee them a win. They were never in any real danger of Redbacks making a comeback but the visitors did lift their game and score the next try. When another opportunity to score was blown by Southern it swung the momentum back in the favour of Western who scored further tries through Ricci Arriola and Keiran Cubby to back up their dominance on the scoreboard. Western captain Sam Coster said it felt like the team had already formed a good bond and is looking forward to the Country Championships next month. “I thought we played really well and came together as a group this morning when we had a little training session and it showed,” he said. “It was a good hit-out and hopefully we can keep it going for Mittagong.” Both Sutton and Coster nominated Dubbo fullback Charly Runciman as the standout on the field. “I thought Charly Runciman played really well from the beginning and thought pack laid the platform for the backs,” the captain said. Defending Harold Matthew's Cup Champions the Penrith Panthers did good in very wet and slippery conditions to take a point against the Roosters who have a new coach at Henson Park with a 16 all draw. The Defending SG Ball Champions the Sydney Roosters almost let the game slip away in the 2nd half against the Panthers who scored almost at will late in the second half to close a big point spread to only 8 points at the end. The SG Ball game was played in the middle of a huge down pour which at times made seeing difficult as the rain was so heavy the boyz showed good determination to control the footy. Seven rugby league players from the Muswellbrook and Upper Hunter shires have been selected in the under 18s Hunter Valley Group 21 representative squad. Blair Baker, Matt Honeysett and Daley Boney from Muswellbrook, Ethan Christianson and Richard Graham from Aberdeen and Isaac McKormick from Denman were all chosen. The boys have been selected for a trial game against the Central Coast to be played tomorrow. Once they play that game they have the opportunity to be selected for the Central Hunter Power team and will play in the Regional Country Rugby League Championships at Mittagong. Coach Garry Gardner said he was extremely happy with how the boys were looking. “I would be very disappointed if eight to 10 boys aren’t selected for the Central Hunter Power team,” he said. |

WITH history beckoning, Kooringal High School rugby league coach Tim Wykes yesterday declared he has the players needed for the school to qualify for its first Hardy Shield grand final. Kooringal will be shooting for its best-ever finish to the Wagga inter-school rugby league competition when it takes on Wagga High School in a critical last-round tie at Equex Centre tonight. In a week of high drama for Kooringal High, Wykes is hoping it is not a case of déjà vu for the team tonight. A year ago Kooringal High was bundled out of contention for the Hardy Shield grand final by Wagga High at a similar stage of the tournament. For Kooringal High, which has been rocked by the suspension of three players for their part in a football brawl on Monday, a historic appearance in the Hardy Shield grand final will be guaranteed if the team wins tonight. Despite the dramatic circumstances, Wykes says the players are feeling no pressure. "We played (Wagga High) in a trial match not long ago, and we seemed pretty evenly matched," Wykes said. "The win on Monday night was good - that will give the boys a bit confidence. "I think our best (Hardy Shield) finish was last year when we made the semi-final so it would be great to win (tonight). "Both the teams have great attacking ability, I guess it will come down to who makes the least mistakes." Kooringal narrowly missed out on making its debut grand final last year when it went down to Wagga High in a low-scoring affair following an otherwise successful Hardy Shield campaign. Wykes says he has no intention of going down the same path this time around, and has been drilling the importance of tonight's clash into his players. Kooringal will take the confidence of a 32-6 victory over The Riverina Anglican College on Monday night into the semi-final, but has reshuffled its playing squad since then. "Obviously we have elected to stand down three players after Monday night, but we have still got the depth in our team," Wykes said. "We have had to shuffle our team around a bit but we shouldn't lose anything out of it. "We've got Brody Rigg back which will be good, but Wagga High has some good players too." Wykes revealed Kooringal will be looking to shut down Wagga High players including Harry Stewart and Trae O'Neill, and says he has told his players to work on their completions for tonight's game. |

| MATER DEI KEEPING FOOT ON ACCELERATOR MATER Dei Catholic College coach Daryl Lawrence has sent a warning to The Riverina Anglican College his team will not be taking tonight's game lightly. With Mater Dei already assured a spot in Monday night's grand final and TRAC out of the running, tonight's clash is somewhat of a dead rubber for both teams. However, Lawrence yesterday revealed he plans to go full steam ahead into the game against TRAC, and is expecting to see 100 per cent from his players. "Our boys definitely won't be taking TRAC lightly," Lawrence said. "I know we are already in the grand final but we can't take it easy now - we will be going over our game plan and working on our defence and line speed. "It's important we don't just drop off now because we have made the final. "We are looking forward to getting a run in before Monday." Lawrence is still tossing up whether or not to rest Mater Dei fullback Pat Harrington tonight, and will make a final decision today on any player changes. Mater Dei is still buzzing after Monday's 30-8 thumping of Hardy Shield rival Kildare Catholic College, but Lawrence says he has warned his players to focus on the games ahead rather than past results. "I think the scores on Monday night blew out a bit towards the end, the game was actually much tighter," he said.  THEY dominated places in the Group 10 representative side and now Bathurst Panthers have filled a majority of the Western Rams under 18s squad positions that were decided over the weekend. Seven Panthers headed to the Western Rams selection trials and of those six earned selection. For Andrew Mendes, Jake Davis, Riccie Arriola, Brady Cheshire, Luke Carpenter and Blake Seager it was another honour after they formed part of the 2010 Group 10 under 18s premiership winning side. All of them have been named in the run on side, reflecting the Panthers’ strength in this age group. It is the second consecutive year the men in black have dominated the Rams squad – last year they had five including Mendes, Davis, Carpenter and Cheshire. Western Rams under 18s coach Steve Sutton, himself a former Bathurst Panthers under 18s mentor, said he was very happy with the team following Saturday’s selection trials at Gulgong’s Billy Dunn Park. “All the players deserved their spot,” the Cowra-based mentor said. Western have bowed out of the Country Rugby League Championships at the semi-finals stage in their past two campaigns, but Sutton said there was no reason why his team could not go further this year. Western play Mid-North Coast representative team Oxley Pioneers in the first round of the championships at Mittagong on April 16. “We’ve got speed out wide, strong forwards, talented halves. We’ve got all the bases covered,” he said. The familiar combinations that Panthers bring to the Rams will also be a strength. NSW Country representative Mendes joins club-mates Arriola and Davis in the back line. They will be joined by another Group 10 player in Orange CYMS star Cody Robbins, talented Dubbo CYMS fullback Charly Runciman and the halves pairing of Jacob Neill and Toby Evans. Sutton said swapping fullback Runciman and winger Robbins between spots during matches was an option. “I think any team that kicks to our back three will find out they are all talented footballers,” he said. The forward pack features three more Panthers with Carpenter to line up as hooker, Cheshire as a prop and Seager in the second row. Group 11 won both their games at the trials – 30-12 against the Presidents XIII and 16-10 against arch-rivals Group 10. Robbins was a star for Group 10, scoring twice in their 26-4 win over Castlereagh. The Presidents XIII managed to win one match, 18-6 over Castlereagh. Panthers’ Blake Miller kicked a goal in that victory. “The day was a good day. There were four good games of footy,” Sutton said. “Having the Presidents team was a good initiative. At one stage they were leading Group 11 8-0. The Gold Coast Green junior representative sides continued their winning ways this weekend in the Mal Meninga and Cyril Connell Cup "Double Header" round with two wins a piece against some rugged opposition in the Toowoomba Clydesdales and the Ipswich Jets. In the Meninga Cup, the Gold Coast Green under 18's produced a solid 38-4 win over the Clydesdales on Saturday and edged out the Jets in a closely contested 16-12 win on Sunday while the Under 16's recorded 26-22 and 14-4 wins in their respectives encounters. While both coaches were happy with maximum points from what are considered to be the toughest rounds of the competition, they were both of the opinion that their is still much room for improvement in their charges. "We are working hard in defence and competing well through the middle but then we seem to let ourselves down when we should be converting this work into points,’’ said 18's coach Jamie O'Connor, a view echoed by his Cyril Connell Cup counterpart Aaron Zimmerle. "I am very happy with our forward game and we create plenty of half chances due to our ability to build pressure but we need to play with a little more patience. Do this and the points on the scoreboard will start to come." He said. "I was particularly impressed with forwards James Iodice who was best on field over the course of the weekend and Joey Weggert who played big minutes in the back row and was everywhere in defence. In the backs Dylan Pelo and 5/8 Nathan Wilson had strong games, both in defence and in their playmaking roles." He added. The "Double Header" concept was introduced to the format this year to allow for cost effective intrastate competition and although physically demanding it does give the representative sides a chance to test themselves against their Northern peers. Next weekend is a bye round for the entire competition before Rounds 4 and 5, the second of the double headers that will see the Titans juniors take on the Sunshine Coast and Central United. The Sydney independent Colleges Rugby League ( SICC) selection Trials will be held on Wednesday the 23rd of March 2011. Two teams 15 and 18 years will be selected to represent SICC in the NSW CCC Rugby League trials in May. SICC encompasses 38 Catholic schools from Sydney and the Gosford area. Four teams PDSSSC, (Parramatta Diocese), Broken Bay Diocese, Southern Sydney Sport’s association and CBSA Christian Brother’s sports association will be participating in the carnival. In all about 160 students will participate in the SICC Trials three times that number participated in the association trials. For most students’ participation in the SICC Trials is an achievement in itself, whilst selection in the SICC team will give them a great opportunity for higher honours. | SHARKS ACADEMY ANNOUNCE TEAMS TO TACKLE THE BULLDOGS The Sharks Academy announce teams selected from local junior league clubs to play the Bulldogs in the under 14’s and 15’s age groups on Saturday, March 26. Following 12 weeks of Summer Academy training, the Sharks have selected teams in the 14’s and 15’s age groups to play the Bulldogs at Toyota Stadium on March 26. Players were chosen from local junior league clubs, with the subsequent teams announced an indication of commitment to the program throughout the summer months as well as to the capacity of the chosen players to perform at a junior representative level. The Sharks Academy would like to thank all players from summer academy, including those not selected for the Bulldogs game, for their participation in the program and wish them well for the upcoming junior league season. The games against the Bulldogs will take place on March 26, with the under-14’s kicking off at 9.00am. The 15’s will follow at 10.05am, before the Under-17’s Sharks Academy also play the Bulldogs, starting at 11.10am. In a big day for the junior Sharks, Matthew Cup and SG Ball will follow, with Round 6 matches against the Western Suburbs Magpies. The academy teams listed below will be re-assessed after junior league trials over the next two weeks, to address any injury concerns.

The first game was the opens Uni Shield team who smash Matraville 54 - 14 in a display which should have pleased coaches Dave Howlett, Jeff Hardy and Brad Kelly. Neither Endeavour or Matraville played their Junior Rep players in this first game which gave all squad players an opportunity to impress and play. Endeavour showed plenty of skill wide and lots of power up the middle with 8 try scores for the day and included a double from Dean Spanos belting Matto 54 - 14 The under 14 Buckley Shield boyz were not to be outdone by their bigger mate, smashing Matto 42 - 8 in a good display of attacking football scoring 7 tries to 2 and inclued a mighty 4 try effort from Joseph Mitrevski. Charly Runciman is one of the brightest rugby league talents to come out of Dubbo in a long time. He’s a product of the St John’s Junior Rugby League production line which has produced the likes of first grade players Andrew Ryan, Dean Pay, Steve Linnane and Martin Meredith. Unlike his uncle, former Balmain Tigers second-rower Trent Runciman, Charly is a fleet-footed fullback. But it is his attitude to football, and not his speed, which has impressed 2011 CYMS co-coach Blake Tremain-Cannon. The parallels between the pair are striking. Both are country born and bred fullbacks. Tremain-Cannon spent time at the Newcastle Knights before returning to the family farm at Peak Hill. Next year Runciman will head to Wollongong to join the St George-Illawarra under-20s squad. His final year at Dubbo will be spent with CYMS, with both men expecting the 17-year-old to spend his share of time in the top grade as the Fishies search for another Group 11 title “I’m not sure if he will play fullback otherwise I might be doing myself out of a job,” Tremain-Cannon joked earlier this week. “It’s part of our job to try and have Charly prepared as best we can for when he gets to Wollongong. “I think by playing a fair bit of first grade it will give him the best shot when he gets down there. “We will look at trialling him in fullback, centres and on the wing. He will need versatility when he gets down there because if you are one-dimensional you don’t get a second chance.” Runciman himself agrees with Tremain-Cannon’s assessment. He spent the off-season, including the Christmas break, training five days a week on a program designed for him by the Dragons. He believes he will benefit from playing as much first grade as possible this season but admits it will be hard to leave his mates in the under-18s. “That’s probably the toughest thing for me - I know this will be my last year playing with all the boys I have grown up with,” he said. “But I enjoyed the first grade I played last year and I know that it will be better for me if I do get a few games against the men. “I know I probably won’t be at fullback. It’s my preferred position and that’s where I will trial for the rep sides but I’ll play wherever I’m needed if I’m first grade. “If that happens then there should be nothing I come across next year that will faze me too much. “I plan to spend this year listening to Blake, Luke Jenkins, Tim Ryan, Wes Maas - all of those guys have been there and done it before so I’m pretty lucky I can call on them for advice whenever I need it.” |

| UNITED NATIONS HAILS RUGBY LEAGUE EVENT Reaction to the presence of rugby league at the recent United Nations’ Dignity for All festival, held in Beirut, has been hugely positive and deemed a great success by the organising United Nations Refugees and Works Agency, the host American University of Beirut and both the Palestinian and Middle East North Africa Rugby League organisations. Although AUB won the exhibition match 28-10, the Palestinian XIII received tremendous support from fans and key officials alike. Busloads of relatives and friends, many of whom were wearing eye-catching red, black, white and green coloured t-shirts that had been produced especially for the day and waving the Palestinian flag, flooded the centre swelling the crowd to well over 2,000 an hour before kick-off.  FORMER VILLEFRANCHE COACH BECOMES NATIONAL BOSS OF NORWAYRugby League Norge has announced the appointment of a new head coach for their national team, with Australian-born Craig West taking on the role having been to Oslo to seal the deal. West’s pedigree includes playing stints with Sydney club Newtown Jets and Pia Donkeys in France before making the switch to coaching with Villefranche in the Midi-Pyrenees region. Upon arrival, West said, “The staff and players of RLN have made me feel very welcome and part of the rugby league family there straight away.” His primary objective is to guide ‘Vikingene’ to a European Shield title against more experienced nations Malta and Germany. RLN Executive Officer Warren Heilig commented, “Rugby League is a rapidly growing sport in Norway and we decided that to move forward we needed a specialist coach with good knowledge of the game but also experience of coaching in new frontiers. Craig was a perfect fit for us.” Norway’s prospective international players will begin training for national team places on May 6th. The WA Boys will be full of confidence after their good win against the Melbourne Storm last week but face an in form Magpies side littered with future stars like 2010 Australian Schoolboys David Nofoaluma & James Tedesco. Mackay State High School Rugby League Academy is again looking forward to a big year. As the 2011 season draws close we again look forward to strong showings in local and state competitions. We are also eagerly awaiting the 3rd tour to the United Kingdom and preparations are well underway. As announced on ourfootyteam.com last year, we have formed a partnership with the Mackay Cutters Queensland Cup side. Already in 2011 we have seen new Mackay Cutters Head Coach Anthony Siebold present a Diet and Nutrition seminar to all parents and Academy students. He presented on numerous topics but most importantly gave the audience insight into pre and post game hydration and nutrition. Mackay State High Rugby League Academy received a lot of positive feedback from this seminar with many parents requesting menu plans that Anthony had prepared. We also had a number of students report to school the next day surprised by the number of healthy food options in their lunch boxes. Secondly, Academy coaches have had their first of many meetings with Anthony to discuss coaching and planning for 2011. His vast experience and knowledge is proving a valuable assest to our Academy program and students are benefiting with a number of his ideas already being implemented in training sessions. Finally, and perhaps most exciting for the students, our first player of the week was announced last week. As a reward for hard work and good performance Under 15 player Rian Sainsbury spent Tuesday night training with the Queensland Cup side. Clifton based rugby league club the Wattles “Warriors” have thrown their muscle and brawn behind a campaign to offer support to some who have suffered tragically in southern Queensland floods earlier this year. Wattles’ club President Barry Glass and his committee are currently busy with arrangements for the 2011 “Wattles Great Copper Wallopin” Flood Tribute Day, that will bring a massive crowd of league devotees & supportive community members to Clifton’s Platz Oval on March 26th. The Wattles club annually adopts a charity that they support throughout the season, with the Endeavour Foundation, Care-Flight & the Kim Walters Appeal some of many over past seasons. A monster program has been assembled that will provide some amazing League entertainment while also generating much needed financial support for those that suffered at the hands of the devastating floods. The day, while playing host to Wattles’ Toowoomba Rugby League Round four matches against the Southern Suburbs “Tigers”, including the prestigious “Ragh Family Trophy”, will also feature a clash between Queensland Police, City verses Country. Police rugby league players from across Queensland, as far afield as Charleville and Cairns will converge on Clifton for the inaugural “City/Country Copper Wallopin’”. Local Clifton Police Officer Greg Burton, a former State Police team representative & Toowoomba “Clydesdales” player, will take the field flying the local colours. Police players were keen for a match in the lead up to their representative commitments, and the “City/Country” clash at Clifton was an ideal opportunity for the “boys in blue” to run in a bit of form according to Police rugby league organizer Jason Orman. Members of the Police teams of recent years have featured former Queensland Cup State League and National Rugby League players. Former Toowoomba Southern Suburbs player Nick Paterson is an example, playing NRL with the North Queensland “Cowboys” and the Manly “Sea-Eagles” before joining the QPS and representing the Police State & National sides. Among special guests on the day will be Mr. John Tyson and his three sons Chris, Kyle & Blake Rice. The family experienced tragedy losing their wife and mother, and brother, Donna and 13 year old Jordan Rice when freakish floods took their lives on January 10th this year in Toowoomba. Jordan died a hero, insisting his brother Blake be rescued ahead of him, before he and his mother were swept away from rescuers in the treacherous flow. The Wattles senior & Wattles Junior Rugby League Club’s have also decided to sponsor two rugby league clubs that have suffered traumatically due to the floods. Committee members and representatives of the Kilcoy “Yowie’s” District Rugby League Club and also the Stanley Rivers “Wolves” Junior Rugby League Club of Woodford will attend the “Flood Tribute” day. Both clubs suffered severe damage during floods, and will be hard pressed to kick off the 2011 season on time, if at all. The association bred from the Wattles support will see annual matches between Wattles and the two clubs continue into the future. Wattles Secretary Mrs. Angela Van Der Poel is amazed at the excitement the “Flood Tribute” Day is arousing in the local community. “The Police City/Country game is going to be a big drawcard on the day, along with the “Ragh Shield” clash and so many other activities on offer”. Club President Barry Glass was very confident the “Flood Tribute” would be supported across the community. “Allora & Clifton areas suffered due to major flooding In January, and people understand fully the losses that many have incurred, let alone the tragedies that have occurred affecting so many, including some in our own community”. Major International carriers Cathay Pacific Airlines have got behind the day and donated a return trip for two to Hong Kong as a major raffle prize. The day will also feature a giant multi draw raffle with the Hong Kong trip as top prize, the list of including “State of Origin” keepsakes, Queensland Rugby League donations, and a framed Queensland Cricket “Bulls” signed playing shirt along with a myriad of other prizes. A “Walloper” auction will be held after the main game with a framed signed 2009 Queensland “State of Origin” jersey a centre piece, along with a signed framed 2010 Australian Tri-Nations jersey also up for grabs. The program for the day will include junior rugby league matches between visiting Brisbane clubs Souths- Acacia Ridge “Magpies” and Albany Creek junior “Crushers” sides and Wattles Juniors, before the Wattles v Southern Suburbs Under 18 & Reserve Grade clashes. The Police “City v Country” match kicks-off at 3.30 pm followed by the Wattles verses Southern Suburbs “A” grade battle. The Ragh family, who share such longstanding connections with both Wattles and Southern Suburbs, will be in attendance to present their family trophy to the team that wins most games between Wattles and Souths from the three games played. The trophy has only been won by Wattles on one occasion, that was 2005, the year of the grand trophy’s inception. Wattles 2011 “A” Grade Coach Ken Riddiford has marked the “Ragh Trophy” as a goal in Wattles rebuild this season, with his team getting a taste of what the “Tigers” had to offer in a mid February trial, when both club’s met in their initial season hit out at Toowoomba’s Clive Berghofer Stadium. On that day Wattles faired the best winning the First & Reserve Grade matches 34 – 18 and 30 – 18 respectively, Souths getting up in the Under 18 clash 34 – 24. The Queensland ploice “Country” side was recently released by team organizer Detective Sergeant Warren Baker of the Charleville Stock & Rural Crime Investigation Squad. Former Brisbane Broncos top grade hooker Michael Ryan well wear the “Country” sides number nine jersey, a regular member of the QPS Central Razorbacks regional side. The 29 year old Ryan is in his first year in QPS rugby league, and played twenty matches for the Broncos from 2001 – 2005. Both teams are littered with players with National Rugby League and Queensland Cup experience, many having represented in Queensland and Australian national Police teams. | TIGERS ON HAND FOR KEEBRA PARK DEVELOPMENT DAY.
It was smiles all round at Keebra Park this week as the school held its development squad meeting for prospective 2012 grade 8 students. These meetings provide an environment where the squad can meet and train together to develop freindships that will make the transition from primary school to high school an easy one. With students from 15 different primary schools in attendance, these ice breaker squad meets are an important aspect of progression along the Keebra Park-Wests Tigers pathway and allow both students and parents to try before they buy into the program. This year saw Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell, trainer Brian Hider and ex- player and recruitment officer John Skandalis on hand to put the boys through their paces. The day kicked off with testing and progressed with talks on nutrition and fitness. Skill sessions and games were held in the afternoon and the day rounded off with a tocgh football competition. Thank you to all parenst and students who attended and looking forward to seeing you all at the second session and in term one next year. The day also saw the launch of the "KEEBRA PARK" supporters merchandise range that includes a supporters shirt and hat. These products will be available through the school bookshop and pictures will be posted in the coming days. June 26th 2011 promises to be a momentous day for four year eleven students at Archbishop Sentamu Academy in East Hull;Craig Corbin and Nathan Grant (Hull Kingston Rovers Scholarship), Kurtis Davidson (Wakefield Scholarship)and Daniel Cadden are extremely lucky young men! This is the day they will depart for Queensland, Australia and a visit to Mackay State High School where they hope to learn about the Aussie approach to the great game and improve their rugby league skills. Everyone has been furiously fund raising for several months now; from bag packs to raffles and tombolas; from sponsored swims to bike rides, with three Academy staff soon to attempt the Three Peaks Challenge! For the less athletic of us there is the choice of race nights, pie ‘n’ peas, tribute acts and a Sportsman’s Dinner (let’s hope Big Willie arrives in time for his appearance as a guest speaker along with Clint Newton!). The support from all areas of the community has been fantastic and continues to be so with Academy staff, parents and students fully behind the adventure and local businesses doing their bit to support it. The rugby league community has played its part too. Clint Newton and Michael Dobson have given their time and support with a ‘Meet the Stars’ question and answer session at the Academy and opportunities for autographs and photographs. Superleague and Championship clubs have donated prizes for raffles and auctions and yes, even our greatest rivals across in the West of the city of Hull have lent a hand! Both the students and Tony Elvin, the trip coordinator, have been overwhelmed by the generosity of everyone involved in any way, small or large. Here’s hoping they return home richer in life’s experiences as well as in rugby league skills. PHOTO: Steve Little The trip out to St Marys Stadium this weekend was well worth it, with both the North Sydney Harold Matthews and S G Ball sides recording hard fought wins on Saturday night against the Western Academy of Sport team. The North Sydney Harold Matts was the dominate team for the majority of the game, leading all the way through till mid way in the 2nd half when Western District scored 3 tries in 10 minutes. But the Bears answered with a final try for a comfortable win 34-14. It took 25 minutes before the Bears No. 12 Solomon Pope, burrowed in for a try. Norths James Theil converted - 6-0 to the Bears. Then a determined assault by the Bears on Western District’s line lead to a great run by Bears No. 17 Lorenzo Toohey - 10-0 to Norths. With 12 minutes left to the break Western Sydney Academy attempted a try but Norths forced an error. A lose ball from a Western Academy kick through was picked up by Bears No. 1 James Theil who ran almost the length of field to score - 14-0 to the Bears. Eight minutes to the second half an error by Western Academy at their line allowed Bears No. 4 Vaea Taliai to stroll in under the posts - 20-0 to North Sydney. Seven minutes in to the second half Bears No. 16 Brandon Addison scored a relatively easy try in the right corner - 24-0 to the Bears and soon after Bears No. 14 Jordan Winterburn scored in the left corner - 28-0 to Norths. But with only 18 minutes on the clock Western Academy scored after a number of attempts - 28-6 to Norths. Western Academy were making big metres down field and scored twice more in succession - 28-14 still to Norths. Norths final try went to Bears No. 14 Jordan Winterburn, sprinting to the left of the posts - 32-14 to the North Sydney Bears. NORTH SYDNEY 32 (Solomon Pope, Lorenzo Toohey, James Theil, Vaea Taliai, Brandon Addison, Jordan Winterburn 2, James Theil 2 goals) defeated WESTERN SYDNEY ACADEMY OF SPORT 14 The North Sydney S G Ball side were not able to dominate as consistently as they did for the majority of their round one match, winning their match with a 24-10 score line. A blackout of the lights at St Marys Stadium mid way through the second half didn’t faze the Bears. Bears No. 6 Tom Watkins attempted an intercept try early – but no go. The Bears withstood a number of attempts by Western Academy to score before Bears No. 5 Jermaine Cavanough, after a grubber kick through, scored - 6-0 to Norths. Minutes later Western Academy scored directly off the highball - 6-6 all. In the final minutes of the half Bears No. 7 Brad Wall showed quick thinking and scored directly from the scrum feed - 12-6 to the Bears. The Bears were under attack early – holding up a try and then finally conceding one when Western Academy scored off a kick through - 12-10 to Norths. With Seventeen minutes left on the clock the football field descended into darkness with all lights other than the stands for about 10 minutes. Back to play, the Bears repelled a try from Western Academy before Bears No. 3 Nick Hedley scored off a behind the back pass by Bears No. 23 John Tusa – 18-10 to the North Sydney Bears. Finally a Western Academy error lead to Bears No. 5 Jermaine Cavanough getting his second try for the day – final score 24-10 to the North Sydney Bears. | END OF AN ERA FOR QRL MANAGING DIRECTOR Story By : QRL Media Release Queensland Rugby League Chairman, John McDonald, advised today that Ross Livermore, its long-standing Managing Director, has announced he will retire from his position effective 31st July this year. Mr McDonald praised Mr Livermore for his passion and commitment to Rugby League over his 30 years in the role. “Ross advised the Board in early 2010 that he was thinking of retiring and in August he informed the Board that he wanted to retire effective as outlined. He has ensured Rugby League is the number one sport in Queensland during three decades of constant change in society. He has always focused on what is best for the game. He has never lost sight of the fact that for Rugby League to prosper throughout Queensland it had to be strong at grassroots level. This focus by Ross has resulted in the elite level in Queensland Rugby League excelling as demonstrated by the Maroons five year winning streak in State of Origin.” “The appointment of a new CEO for the QRL is a critical appointment, made more so by the new era dawning in Rugby League with the impending commencement of the ARL Commission. The key driver for the QRL, and the incoming CEO, will be to maintain focus on continuing the strong growth in the game achieved over the last three decades, right across Queensland,” Mr McDonald stated. The QRL Board has appointed leading Queensland recruitment agency, Davidson Recruitment, to handle the task of recruiting a replacement for Mr Livermore. | ACADEMY HAS UP AND DOWN DAY Story By : THE WESTS Greater Northern Academy sides had a mixed end to their 2010/11 program when the under 17s won and the 18s lost to Western in Tamworth on Saturday. In contrasting fortunes, the under 17s were disjointed yet managed a 14-10 win while the 18s performed better but went down 20-10 thanks to two runaway tries in the dying minutes from Western fullback Codey Robbins. The junior side made a lot of errors but somehow fought back from 4-nil down to lead 10-4 after Scone’s Jack Dawson crashed over and Tamworth’s Ethan Gaffney did the same in the second period of play. Mick Ingwersen crossed for Western to level the scores but Gaffney went over for his second late in the game to steal it for the home side. The 18s found themselves in an arm wrestle and it wasn’t until the second third of the game that Tamworth’s Joe Lockwood crashed over from close range to open the scoring. But Jared Nicholson scored under the posts to give Western a 6-4 lead and Cameron Clarke made it 10-4 before Reece Jaeger finished off a good GNA try to level it at 10-all. From there GNA went on the attack but it backfired, not once but twice. A chip and chase saw the ball find Robbins at pace and he streaked away to score his first and a few minutes later he did it again when he took an intercept and ran 80m to demoralise the GNA boys. But overall the GNA coaches were pleased with the program and hope to see most of the under 17s squad return again next summer. |

| JAMAICA LAUNCH FIRST PROFESSIONAL RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB Jamaica’s first professional rugby league franchise, Hurricanes Rugby League, has been officially launched at GC Foster College during a weekend of competition on the island. The franchise is owned by ex-professional Australian rugby league player Dane Campbell, who intends to see the outfit competing against American or Canadian clubs by 2013. The idea is as novel as it is bold and Hurricanes General Manager is Roy Calvert, who is also the vice-captain of Jamaica’s national team. The announcement was part of a weekend of 13-a-side activity which included the Fourth JRLA High School 9s which included first time entrants Anchovy High alongside Greater Portmore High, Spanish Town High, St. Georges College, Campion College, Calabar High, Vauxhall High, Tarrant High and Edith Dalton James High.
