ACADEMY HAS UP AND DOWN DAY
Story By :
THE WESTS Greater Northern Academy sides had a mixed end to their 2010/11 program when the under 17s won and the 18s lost to Western in Tamworth on Saturday.
In contrasting fortunes, the under 17s were disjointed yet managed a 14-10 win while the 18s performed better but went down 20-10 thanks to two runaway tries in the dying minutes from Western fullback Codey Robbins.
The junior side made a lot of errors but somehow fought back from 4-nil down to lead 10-4 after Scone’s Jack Dawson crashed over and Tamworth’s Ethan Gaffney did the same in the second period of play.
Mick Ingwersen crossed for Western to level the scores but Gaffney went over for his second late in the game to steal it for the home side.
The 18s found themselves in an arm wrestle and it wasn’t until the second third of the game that Tamworth’s Joe Lockwood crashed over from close range to open the scoring.
But Jared Nicholson scored under the posts to give Western a 6-4 lead and Cameron Clarke made it 10-4 before Reece Jaeger finished off a good GNA try to level it at 10-all.
From there GNA went on the attack but it backfired, not once but twice.
A chip and chase saw the ball find Robbins at pace and he streaked away to score his first and a few minutes later he did it again when he took an intercept and ran 80m to demoralise the GNA boys.
But overall the GNA coaches were pleased with the program and hope to see most of the under 17s squad return again next summer. |

KEEBRA PARK SEASON 2011 SET TO KICK-OFF
Story By : dHart KP RL
This week at Keebra Park saw the start of the local schools competition with the Under 13's in action at Elanora and the 14 and 15 years A & B sides trialling against Palm Beach Currumbin.
The 13's were very good in their opening encounter which is reflective of the depth in this age group while the older boys both gave a good showing against PBC which is a good sign for the season proper.
Spencer Hepi was a standout for the 15's and lead them well playing both fullback and in the centres during a hard fought contest.
While both the 14's and 15's managed to get the better of PBC on the day, these games were more a diagnostic tool for the coaching staff and to allow the students to try out in different positions as many have undergone changes in both height and weight that have opened up new possibilities in 2011.
The next few weeks will also see the commencement of trialling in the Open division, the first rounds of the rugby union sevens competition and the 2012 development squad meeting, so all in all it is a busy time for both students and staff.
Congratulations also go out to the representatives in the various Cyril Connell and Mal Meninga Cup squads who also begin competition next week.
The 2012 Los Angeles Tour is gaining momentum with contact being made with De La Salle College and Long Beach High, the two premier NFL schools in California.
These schools both produced six NFL rookies in 2010 and will provide our boys opportunities to interact with their Trans Pacific peers. |

DUBBO PLAYERS TO LINE-UP IN ACADEMY SQUADS
Story & Photo By : BEN WALKER
Additional Photo's BY :
Dubbo clubs will provide six players to the Western Region Academy squads which will play Northern Academy in trials in Tamworth on Saturday.
Blaize Fuller, Daniel Runciman, Isaiah Yeo, Jarrod Usher, Daniel Kelly and Mason Williams will all be in action as part of two matches being used as curtain-raisers for the Bulldogs-Raiders NRL trial.
The academy sides are split into two depending on age, with Williams a member of the second-year program while the other five are first-year squad members.
Country Rugby League (CRL) development officer Matt Walkom said the trials were a good chance for the players, whose origins stretch from Lithgow to Narromine, to impress in front of NRL scouts.
“These clubs will have staff and scouts at Tamworth so for the kids it is a good opportunity so show what they have got,” Walkom said.
“Of our guys, Blaize Fuller is the Dubbo international player of the year and a real free-flowing talent. He looks like he’s jogging sometimes then he just makes guys look like they’re standing still.
“Dan Runciman is a solid front-rower who leads well and has learned a lot from the academy program.
“Isaiah Yeo is a spitting image of his dad Justin Yeo. He’s still a bit raw but he is talented.
“Jarrod Usher is a utility back who will be important off the bench late in the halves when the forwards get tired, particularly if it’s warm up there and Dan Kelly is raw, just like Isaiah, but when he learns what he’s capable of he will be a very good player.
“In the older team, Mason Williams is a centre who is just coming back from a leg injury.
“He’s a good kid with a lot of talent and his mental toughness is shown by the fact he was able to come back from the injury and be ready to go so early in the season.”
The first-year squad will be in action at 4pm while the second-year players are scheduled to hit the field at 5.30pm. |

GLEN INNES HS TRAINED BY DRAGON COACHES
Story BY : RLCM
Sixty-five footballers from Glen Innes High School had the opportunity to be trained by two elite coaches from current NRL premiers St George Illawarra Dragons last Wednesday. Ben Harron (Toyota Cup coach) and Dave Ballard (strength and conditioning coach) were on hand to help sharpen up the boy's skills before the upcoming season.
Key aspects of defence, attack, speed and agility were focused on during the three-hour session.
The outstanding opportunity provided an excellent base to launch the Glen Innes High School GATRL program for 2011.
The affiliation with the Dragons will see many opportunities of this nature evolve with plans to take students and coaching staff back to Wollongong before Easter.
This concept continues to grow and provide great opportunities for local boys in the Glen Innes community.
Later that evening Harron and Ballard also attended a Glen Innes Magpies training session to share some tips with the town's more senior players.
Members from the Magpies first grade, reserve grade, under 18's and league tag side were all on hand to receive some valuable advice from the best in the business. |
KING RE-SIGNS FOR TWO YEARS
Story BY : BY MICHAEL CARAYANNIS
Photo's By :
BOOM St George Illawarra rookie Cameron King has given the premiers a boost heading into the start of the season by inking a new two-year deal at the club.
King’s re-signing comes on the back of prop Dan Hunt extending his contract until the end of 2013, with St George junior Jason Nightingale expected to ink a multi-year deal with the club before the season starts.
King, a dummy-half, who made his NRL debut last year, will stay at the club until at least the end of the 2013 season, even if coach Wayne Bennett decides to go elsewhere.
‘‘I’m happy here,’’ King, 19, said. ‘‘It’s a good club to be at and I didn’t feel the need to look anywhere else.’’
The former Junior Kangaroo had a shoulder reconstruction last year and played one first grade game.
King will push for a spot in the Dragons top 17 after spending the off-season training full-time.
‘‘I’ll be staying regardless of what Wayne does,’’ King said. ‘‘It is good for me and gives me confidence.’’
His solid preseason form has seen him drafted into the Dragons World Club Challenge squad as cover for utility Nick Emmett, who suffered a dislocated shoulder in Friday’s 28-14 win against the Bulldogs, but could be fit to play against Wigan.
Meantime, Hunt has given a clear indication of how much Monday’s World Club Challenge means to him.
An Achilles injury in the warm-up to the round 10 clash against Canberra last year robbed Hunt of a chance of playing a part in the Dragons premiership charge.
‘‘I regard this as my grand final,’’ Hunt said before flying out with teammates to England on Saturday.
‘‘I am really looking forward to it because it’ll be a different experience with the weather and the different football they play.’’
The Dragons will be confident after easy back-to-back trial wins.
Hunt played the bulk of Friday’s first half before Bennett replaced most of his World Challenge squad.
‘‘[The trials] have been pretty tough coming back from injury,’’ Hunt said.
‘‘I was really nervous last week. You take for granted what you’ve got as a footballer.’’
Having to go through the pre-game warm-up had played on his mind.
‘‘We went through it in a training session and it was a little bit weird,’’ Hunt said.
‘‘I think I’m back to where I was before. I’ve just got to manage the workload and backing up between games.’’
St George Junior Rugby League clubs will hold free come-and-try afternoons at various venues tomorrow. There will be games and activities, the chance to meet a Dragons player, barbecues, prizes and the chance to register with a club. Details: Jodie 0411159447. |

GROUP 11 WIN CLOSE ENCOUNTER
Story & Photo By : BARRY HILDEBRANDT
The Group 11 Development side came away with the desired carnival result beating a gallant Far West Academy outfit 6-4 at Apex Oval in Dubbo on Saturday.
The round robin games between Group 11 and Group 10 development sides and the Far West Academy were played as a lead-up to the seniors clash between the visiting Fijian Residents and Group 11.
After Group 11 and Far West won their early games against Group 10, the scene was set for a close third game and a virtual ‘final.’ The two sides didn’t disappoint.
After the first period of play there were no points on the board.
But the deadlock was broken with a try to Group 11 replacement Steven Dinham who read Alex Bonham’s cross kick to the letter and with a great chase and pick up was able to cross. Bonham added the extras and Group 11 led 6-0.
Far West had an opportunity to draw level after Jacob Neill scored but the kick was waved away.
Despite their loss, Far West coach Col Wright was pleased with the performance of his players.
“There are some very good kids in the side and they played well today in both games,” he said.
“Having a game in Newcastle last weekend was certainly beneficial and the team work was good.
“On the back of that we’ll now look forward to good performances again in our upcoming Eastern Challenge which we hold in Nyngan each year.
“It’s on the weekend of April 22-23 and already we have confirmed teams coming from Parramatta, Penrith, Wests, Newcastle and Groups six, fourteen and eleven.
“Ideally, we would like a couple of more teams which we hope will happen in the next few weeks.”
The Far West Academy boys are from towns all around the western area and the performance by the team is a good indication of the talent that is on top.
This means also that the work put in by coaches such as Col Wright and Kyle Myers is paying off.

SING’S TRY SEALS VICTORY IN GROUP 11 JUNIORS’ TRIAL
A try to lock Billy Sing and the conversion by Alex Bonham was all that separated Group 11 and Group 10 in their first up juniors trial at Apex Oval on Saturday.
However, the Matt Walkom coached Group 11 dominated field possession, especially in the first half, and the visiting side was given no chance to get into the try scoring zone during the same period.
Group 11 could have been further in front near half-time when Sing found himself in the clear but was taken in a great ball and all tackle by Terry Brown on the last tackle.
Group 10, prepared by Bathurst St Pat’s captain-coach Wade Judd, were more adventurous in the second period and went close to scoring a couple of times. However, the Group 11 defence at the same time was good and they deserved the win.
Group 11 6 (Billy Sing try; Alex Bonham goal) def Group 10 nil.
Meanwhile, three brilliant first half tries saw Far West Academy out to 18-0 in the first nine minutes of the clash against Group 10 before winning 34-4.
Group 10 was backing up after losing to Group 11 but had no answer to the attacking flare by Far West.
Tries by Dylan Brand, Jake Jones and Mark Hogno and three goals by Dylan Hately highlighted Far West’s effort.
The sole try for Group 10 came with a special piece of work by Jed Beasley who carried the ball from his own side of halfway and beat some lax defence.
Far West scored three more tries in the second half and came away as deserved winners.
Far West Academy 34 (Dylan Brand, Jake Jones, Mark Hogno 2, Ben Douglas, Tim Williams tries; Dylan Hately 5 goals) def Group 10 (Jed Beasley try).
Half-time: Far West 18-4. |

ENGLAND YOUTH PUT THROUGH THEIR PACES BY ROYAL MARINES
Story & Photo BY : Nathan Clarke RLF
The England Youth Rugby League side have been put through their paces by Royal Marine troops during a camp session which was held at Royal Marine headquarters, RAF Lympstone between February 13 – 16.
The Youth side, who will face neighbours France in a two test series this Easter, spent four days with the Marine soldiers and were put through a series of physical and mental challenges designed to improve their leadership, communication and teamwork qualities, all under the watchful eye of England head coach Steve McNamara.
“Having the opportunity to train with the Royal Marines is fantastic for these young players,” said McNamara. “The Marines are the elite armed forces and some of the most disciplined, dedicated and physically fit soldiers in the world and it is great for our young players to be surrounded by that environment.
“The guys were training alongside actual Marine soldiers, so they were able to see what it takes both physically and mentally to become an elite soldier and these are traits which are transferable to sport and will help these young players become better and help them make the step up to the next level.
“The lads worked on a lot of leadership, communication and teamwork skills which will be of great benefit in their playing careers. They were also pushed physically and they we’re given the tools to work well under pressure and to work in fatigued conditions and these will make them stronger going forward.”
The Youth side are coached by Dave Elliott, the man who led the England Academy to a series victory over the Australian Schoolboys last season but McNamara was keen to attend the camp with the Youth side and cast his eye over England’s youngest group of stars.
“We want to create an identity for the players,” said McNamara. “It can be difficult for players to form a close bond when they play for different clubs with different cultures but this is a great way of overcoming that.
“They’ve had to work together in pressure situations during this camp and that takes them out of their comfort zone and brings them together and while these guys might be in the Youth system, they are still part of Team England just like the senior guys are and we want to ensure there is a cohesive bond between all the teams.” |

WA SEES RED AFTER RND 1 SHOCKER
Story & Photo's By :
The WA Reds Sg Ball team will be rueing the lost opportunity after too much dropped ball in the 1st home game of their 2011 season against the visiting defending Premiers the Sydney Roosters.
The WA Reds got wacked, 42 to 10.
The game was played in good spirit though.
The roosters were a bigger side overall but the Reds knew before the game that they would be outgunned in the kilogram stakes.
Both sides had their fair share of dropped ball and a couple of scrums went against the feed, on both sides.
In the end the Reds defence was their biggest letdown.
The Roosters forwards just mowed the Reds defence down.
Dispite the score line, the Reds didn't look all that far off the pace.
If I were the Roosters coach I would be worried about the dropped ball from their flashier players.
Both teams will improve as the season progress and the defending Champions again look a force to be reckoned with. |

HARRY SIEJKA SHOWED SKILL IN NRL TRIAL
Story By : RLCM
Photo's :
Last year he wore the green and gold of the Australian Schoolboys but in season 2011 the goal for Bathurst rugby league product Harry Siejka is to get as many minutes as possible playing in the NRL for the Penrith Panthers. He did his chances of spending time in the code's elite competition no harm on Saturday night as the Panthers' Toyota Cup star guided his side to a 28-22 win over Newcastle in a trial match at Port Macquarie.
While Siejka is not likely to force Luke Walsh out of the number seven jumper, his effort certainly showed he has the skill to match older, more experienced rivals.
With little time left on the clock on Saturday night and his side trailing 22-16, Siejka inspired the comeback win as he helped engineer two tries.
He set up the first for Jesse Sene-Lefao with a perfectly placed grubber kick then added the extras to lock the game up at 22-all.
The Knights opted for a short kick-off as play restarted as they looked to win back possession, but Siejka was awake to the ploy and retrieved the ball.
Then, with only seconds left, he positioned himself to break the deadlock with a field goal only to be pressured by a swarming Newcastle defence.
Instead of the one pointer, he evaded two tackles before slipping a great inside ball between defenders for centre Adrian Purtell to cross under the posts.
For measure Siejka potted the final conversion to make it 28-22.
It was a significant victory for the Panthers, who rested a number of top-liners including powerhouse prop Petero Civoniceva.
For Newcastle, the working-class club mining magnate Nathan Tinkler is prepared to inject $100 million into, the match was a reality check.
While much has been made about Tinkler's desire to spend big and lure quality players such as NSW Origin rookies Kade Snowden and Jamal Idris to Newcastle for 2012 if he's handed the reins of the club, the current roster of players were forced to confront more immediate matters.
The Knights made a series of sloppy errors early on and the Panthers were quick to capitalise, especially when winger James McManus coughed up the ball on his line.
Hooker Kevin Kingston made the most of the mishap by scoring the first of his two first half tries while speedy winger Sandor Earl crossed for a third to hand the Panthers a 16-10 lead at the break.
The Knights clawed their way back through tries from Richie Fa'aoso and Mark Taufua, but Siejka's late brilliance ensured it was the Panthers who prevailed. |

UNDER 18S FORM IMPRESSES MCDONALD
Story BY : SAM DEBENHAM
THE standard of play at the opening week of the Group 10 under 18s selection trials was impressive according to Group 10 secretary Peter McDonald and he expects it to continue into the second night of trial games at Carrington Park this evening.
The Bathurst venue played host to over 50 hopefuls last Wednesday, and two more trial games will be staged tonight in order to better serve coach Kip Maranda and the selection panel when it comes time to pick the side to take on Group 11 in March.
“The standard was pretty high last week I thought,” McDonald said.
“It looks like a lot of the boys have been doing a fair bit of work in the off-season and they did a good job despite the temperatures.
“It is up to each of the individuals how much preparation they do in the summer for things like this – if they want to go somewhere in the sport and get some work done it is up to them to do it themselves and it looks like a lot of them have.
“With that dangling carrot of representative football there, it doesn’t take a lot for most of them to get themselves up physically for this sort of thing, and mentally they just need to be ready and know that if they make Group 10, it is the first step towards representing Country.”
The players were split into four teams and played a match each consisting of a 30 minute and 20 minute ‘half,’ and will do likewise again tonight.
McDonald says that the idea behind the trial is to ensure that the selectors get a better look at potential players rather than simply picking them from their Pre-Season Knockout form.
“In years gone by they were picked off that form which, realistically, is a couple of 10 or 15- minute periods, and by the end of the year all these players emerge across Group 10 who slipped through the net because they might not have been standouts in those knockout games,” he said.
“This way the players get a chance to show their fitness – more of an opportunity to work their way into a game and in general it is just a more thorough method of picking the side.”
The Group 10 and Group 11 under 18s sides will clash on March 12. |

NEW CRL DEVELOPMENT OFFICER STRAIGHT DOWN TO BUSINESS
Story & Photo BY :
WARIALDA’S Peter Stevens officially took on his new role as the Country Rugby League development officer for the Greater Northern region last week and there was no settling-in period for the former Wombats half.
One of the first jobs was welcoming the Parramatta Eels to the area for the NRL One Community Carnival, followed by training with the Wests Greater Northern Academy on Sunday.
Stevens has been involved with the GNA and also helped outgoing development officer Jamie McCormack at coaching clinics and school visits for a couple of years.
But there is still a lot to learn, especially on the administration side of things.
“All the outdoor stuff I know well,” Stevens said.
“But it’s the indoor stuff that’s all new to me. I’ve got a bit to learn and it’s a process.
“It’s a real challenge for me. The good thing is it’s an enjoyable job.”
The role asks a lot, from encouraging young kids to play rugby league, developing the skills of those already involved, co-ordinating competitions and events and dealing with all of the formalities that the job brings.
Stevens is more used to his old job as a welder but has been involved in football as player and coach for years, mostly with the Wombats.
“Everyone you associate with is in football but it’s all walks of life,” Stevens said.
“It might be a coaching clinic or administration so you’re working with five-year-olds and 40-year-olds.
“You never know what the next job is or what the next phone call will be.”
This week’s big event is the GNA trip to Cessnock where the two sides will play games against the Hunter Academy and Balmain Tigers.
“It’s a really busy time of year with the academy finishing up,” Stevens said.
“It’s exciting for us because this is what the boys have worked for all summer when everyone else is at the pool.”
McCormack did the job for eight years and was highly regarded for his knowledge of the game and ability as an organiser.
“He’ll be missed,” Stevens said.
“I hope it’s in as good a shape when I leave it.”
Stevens will remain in Warialda for at least six months but will be a regular visitor to the CRL offices in Uralla and Tamworth in the course of his duties which take him right across the Group 4 and 19 areas.
The Men Of League Charity Golf Day will be held at Tamworth Golf Club tomorrow. Cost is $35 per player teeing off 10.30am to 11.30am. For more information contact Tamworth Golf Club Pro Shop (67659980). |
JUNIORS GIVEN TIP FROM TOP AT TRAINING CAMP
Story & Photo BY : JOSH CALLINAN
Maitland’s best junior rugby league players will have the chance to improve their skill base even further this weekend.
Around 150 players from the Maitland and District Schoolboys Rugby League Association will converge on Myuna Bay for a two-day training camp, which includes coaching from the Newcastle Knights.
Up to 40 players from each of the four age groups (under-13 to under-16) will come face-to-face with the likes of Adam MacDougall, Isaac De Gois, Neville Costigan and Zane Tetavone ahead of the NSW Country Championships later this year.
“The boys will participate in our summer skills development program,” Newcastle Knights junior coaching coordinator Laurie Clifton said.
“Hopefully it will help enhance game awareness, improve individual core skills and provide education on issues like nutrition and hydration.
“It is also an opportunity to gain selection for the Maitland representative teams for 2011.”
The squads have been in training since before Christmas and following the camp will play an academy challenge against Newcastle, group three (Forster) and group two (Coffs Harbour) on March 7.
From there each age group will be scaled back to 20 players ahead of their major annual competitions in May and June.
The under 13s and under 14s will play country championships at Wyong on May 28 and 29 while the under 15s and under 16s will contest their respective tournaments at Forster on the June long weekend. |

Raiders lock Shaun Fensom was one of the players who attended Bungendore Public School this morning on his way to Bateman’s Bay and said it was great to see so many children excited about the Raiders and Rugby League.
“It’s great to get out on the road at the start of the year and meet some of the fans you wouldn’t get to normally, especially in areas like Bungendore which is part of our area,” Fensom said. “The boys are looking forward to the trial in Bega on Saturday night and also visiting schools on the South Coast.” |

But for the stocky prop it was all about getting back on the field after shoulder surgery ended his season early in 2010.
“It was good to get out there and dust the cobwebs off a bit,” Matt-hews said.
“I haven’t played in a long while, so it was good just to be out on the field again.
“It was pretty important for me to get out there and make some tackles to test my shoulder after surgery.”
The 22-year old was a regular interchange player during the first half of last season until a shoulder reconstruction kept him on the sidelines for the rest of the year.
Titans coach John Cartwright was happy with Matthews’ performance and expects him to be back in the top grade again this season.
“He’s been there before and hand-led it pretty well,” Cartwright said.
“I know he can add some grunt to the team, so if his form warrants it he will definitely be there.
“It’s a tough injury to come back from but he got through the trial pretty well.”
The enigmatic Shannon Walker was not so lucky when he was forced to withdraw from the game after failing to recover from a torn hamstring three weeks ago.
Matthews said he would love nothing more than to play NRL with his Kyogle teammate this year.
Meanwhile, former Ballina Seagulls and Marist Brothers junior Chris Binge helped lead the way at hooker in the Brisbane Broncos’ 26-10 win over the Titans’ Under-20 squad in the curtain-raiser.
“I moved in to dummy-half from centre last year and I’m starting to feel comfortable there now,” Binge said.
“I’ve always had a bit of ball playing ability and I’m keen to cement myself at hooker in the run-on side this season.” |

JUNIOR RAIDERS BACK IN BUSINESS
Story By : Canberra RAIDERS
Photo's By :
The Canberra Raiders SG Ball and Harold Matthews teams have been reinstated into their respective competitions and will join the competition from its commencement on February 19.
Raiders CEO Don Furner said he was pleased with the result and thanked the NSWRL for their understanding during the long process.
“We’re grateful that we’re back in the SG Ball and Harold Matthew’s as we view this as an important pathway for us in developing junior talent,” Furner said. “The whole way through this process the junior players have held themselves well and should be proud of the efforts they’ve put in by sticking together.
“The two teams can now concentrate on getting themselves ready for the season ahead.”
Earlier today the NSW Rugby League issued this media release:
The Board of the New South Wales Rugby League has today extended an invitation to the Canberra Club and has also reaffirmed the places of both St George and Illawarra in the 2011 Harold Matthews and SG Ball Competitions after receiving assurances all three Clubs will participate in the 2012 NSW Cup.
“The Canberra Raiders were given a significant amount of time to make arrangements to participate in the 2011 NSW Cup as either a joint-venture or as a standalone entity,” NSWRL General Manager, Geoff Carr, said today.
“When this did not happen, as a member club, their junior representative sides became ineligible to participate in both the Harold Matthews and SG Ball, hence their original exclusion from the draw released in December 2010.
“However, after weeks of negotiations, Canberra Raiders CEO, Don Furner, and Canberra Raiders head coach, David Furner, addressed the NSW Cup Management Committee to emphasize their long term commitment to the NSW Cup.
“Following the meeting, a recommendation was taken to the NSWRL Board that upon receiving written and signed documentation guaranteeing their support and participation in the 2012 NSW Cup that their junior representative sides would be eligible to play in 2011.”
The NSWRL Board has also reinforced that as a member club, it is compulsory to field teams in the Harold Matthews, SG Ball and NSW Cup’s and this will be communicated to all Clubs in due course |

MULLALLY AGREES BRISBANE SWITCH
Story By : Sporting Life.com
Widnes Vikings teenager Anthony Mullally is to join an increasing band of English players in Australia after agreeing to spend the 2011 season with Brisbane Broncos.
The 19-year-old forward will play for the Broncos' Under-20s team in the Toyota Cup as part of a pilot project to fast-track leading young British talent.
Widnes director of rugby Paul Cullen said: "When I travelled to Australia and New Zealand recently to watch the Four Nations tournament, everybody I spoke to were all curious as to how we were going to catch up both the Kiwi and Australian national teams.
"The consensus of opinion was that we have to start sending over some of our young, English players to play and develop themselves within the Australian system.
"Common-sense tells us that it isn't feasible to send over 30 or more players every season but, as a pilot project, Anthony Mullally will lead the Widnes club's drive to better ourselves both individually and collectively.
"Long term, we hope this scheme benefits us here at Widnes and hopefully it could contribute toward English rugby league being a stronger force on the world stage."
Former Australian Test half-back Allan Langer, now a skills coach at Brisbane, said: "We genuinely hope that we can further develop Anthony's rugby league proficiency during his spell here and also provide him with some wonderful life experiences.
"It's our aim to send him home after his spell here, ready to play Super League for the Vikings if they are successful in their licence application."
Mullally is the third English player to link up with an NRL club for 2011 but the first from outside Super League.
Bradford forwards Mike Worrincy and George Burgess have joined Penrith and South Sydney respectively, while Sam Burgess (Souths), Gareth Ellis, Mark Flanagan (both Wests Tigers) and Gareth Widdop (Melbourne) are already plying their trade successfully in Australia.
Anthony Mullally has futher Australian connections having won man of the match awards against the visiting Mackay SHS touring side a couple years ago |
BACK TO SCHOOL AT KEEBRA
Story By : Mr Hart
With the holidays over and term one well and truly underway , there is a buzz of anticipation as Keebra Park moves towards trials and the season proper.
With an increase in general schools numbers due to the Academic Excellence Program and the success of the Rugby League program there will be increased competition across the board this year and this should equate to even higher quality outcomes.
Seniors training has commenced on Friday mornings and the boys are going well with many taking advantage of the pre-school gym sessions run by strength and conditioning coach Mr Campbell.
An information session was held in week two and parents and guardians were able to ask questions of the coaching staff and chat with medical industry leaders regarding dental, Physio and insurance issues.
After the success of the New Zealand and Polynesian Islands Tour in 2010 there was much interest in the planned North American Tour that hopes to both promote this great game and tap into the cutting edge NFL knowledge that is abundant in the American College System.
2010 was a good year for the rugby league team with the Opens making its 4th National Final appearance in 6 years and Bodene Thompson, Corey Norman and Ben Murdoch all making their NRL debuts.
This year will see the boys defend their spot as Queensland Champions and National Rugby Union Sevens victors in an environment that is becoming increasingly more competitive with many schoolboy football teams vying for pole position.
GOOD LUCK FOR 2011. |

COWBOY JONES JUST WANTS TO PLAY FOOTY
Story & Photo By : Andrew Piva
NEW Cowboys signing Ben Jones does not care what number he has on his back when he runs on the field, as long as he is in the first 17.
The 20-year-old former Junior Kangaroos captain arrived from the Roosters early last month and was in Cairns on Saturday as part of the Cowboys Top Gun Academy.
Jones, who has already notched 27 first-grade games since debuting in 2008, has the ability to play halfback, five-eighth, hooker and in the outside backs.
He has been mentioned as a possible replacement for injured centre Brent Tate, but Jones is happy to fulfil whatever role Cowboys coach Neil Henry wants him to.
"I don’t mind where I play to be honest," Jones said.
"It’s one of my goals to play as much first grade as I can this year and I’m happy to fit in wherever I can to help the team out. "I’ve only been up here three weeks, but I’ve fitted in pretty well and I’m pretty much settled now.
"I’m just looking forward to the trials and the season starting."
Despite the Cowboys boasting one of the NRL’s most talented rosters, the Townsville-based club has not played finals football since 2007.
But Jones, who helped the Roosters go from wooden-spooners in 2009 to grand finalists last season, said the Cowboys have realistic top-eight aspirations.
"There’s a very good vibe at the club,’’ he said. ‘‘We’ve got the players to make the finals.
"We’ve got JT (Johnathan Thurston), Willie Tonga, Brent Tate and Dallas Johnson, so there’s no shortage on
talent.
"Everyone’s been training hard and it’s got to the stage where we want the trials and the season to start."
The Cowboys will play the Gold Coast Titans in a trial match at Barlow Park on February 26.
Grandstand tickets are available from the Cairns District Rugby League office at Barlow Park, while tickets to the outer are available from the CDRL office, Sportscene Super Warehouse on Mulgrave Rd and the customer care desk, Stockland Earlville. |

ACADEMY CLINIC KEEPS YOUNG REFS ON THE BALL
Story & Photo BY :
SUNDAY’S Greater Northern Academy coaching clinic in Tamworth wasn’t just about improving the skills of the young players.
It was also a valuable day for aspiring young referees from across the region.
Tony Hardy is the Northern NSW referees development officer and has been based in Tamworth the past two years.
On Sunday he had five young referees at the GNA coaching session, helping them better their blossoming officiating talents.
“Normally we have nine but four are away on holidays,” Hardy said.
“It’s good to have these good young refs here. We need a lot more of them.”
He said NSW coach Ricky Stuart took time out to also speak to the aspiring young referees, which was valuable and inspiring .
“A lot of these kids are going to Wollongong next week for a CRL refereeing seminar,” Hardy said. “NRL refs will be there.”
The young referees came from as far as Buhledelah, Uralla and Singleton. Young men such as Andrew Smith, Uralla’s Corbin Kelly, Denman’s Roxley Duggan, Muswellbrook’s Liam Parker, Lachlan Wild, Alex Daniels, Daniel Healy, Michel Hedges and Joey Butler make up the refereeing squad. |
