LONDON ANSWERS CALL IN ST JOHN’S’ THRILLING VICTORY
Story & Photo : BARRY HILDEBRANDT
A Zac London try on the full-time siren has gifted St John’s College a passage into the Southern Final of the Andrew Ryan Country Cup Under-15 series.
Down 6-4 against Blayney High at Apex Oval yesterday, the Dubbo boys gave it their last shot and London was the right man to get the job done with a try in the left corner for an 8-6 victory.
Earlier St John’s was credited with a win when they scored the first try in a 18-all draw with Condobolin High School.
St John’s coach Shane Alderice - who was standing in for Andy Haycock - gave a big wrap to his side.
“They may be on the small side for under-15s but they’ve certainly got a lot of ticker,” he said.
“We went into today’s games without two of our best players - Billy Sing and Luke Anderson - but everyone chipped in”.
Sing is away with New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges at the under-15s national carnival in Canberra, while Anderson is playing for New South Wales in the Australia Junior Basketball Championships.
“Like in the Dubbo qualifying round these kids just keep turning up and that was obvious here today in both our games,” Alderice said.
“It could easily have gotten away from us but Zac (London) was the one boy we needed to have the ball in hand in those last few seconds.”
St John’s captain and hooker Ben Marlin had a creative game for the winners while his hooker Jordan Reynolds was also strong - but in the main it was job well done by all the team.
In the win over Blayney, Zac London and Tavis Vaughan scored the tries while London, Mitch Dunlop and Stuart Speirs crossed in the game against Condobolin.
St John’s and Red Bend College in the under-13s, have both qualified for the Southern Final to be played at Cootamundra on July 29.
Red Bend College coaches Todd Healey and Steven Hooper were both delighted with their side’s two wins.
“We’ve already got our Opens team into the Southern Final so it’s good for the school to have two sides in there. We were overall winners of the Opens last year so things are on track for a good end to the series,” Hooper said.
In their two games yesterday Red Bend defeated Dubbo South Campus 20-16 and then James Sheahan, Orange 16-10 after Forbes led 16-0 midway through the second-half. |

One of the biggest weeks in the Dubbo Junior Rugby League calender kicks off today, with four separate competitions to be held at Apex Oval right through to Sunday.
The finals of the Andrew Ryan Country Cup will be played out today, with teams from Dubbo, Forbes, Blayney and Orange contesting in the under-13s and under-15s age divisions.
Tomorrow, the Russell Richardson Shield, for Years 3 and 4 students, and David Peachey Cup, Years 5 and 6, will see schools competing from Orange to as far west as Nyngan.
South Dubbo and Buninyong Public and St Laurence’s Catholic school will represent the Dubbo area in this competition.
Central schools from across the area will get the chance to hit it out on Thursday and Friday in a round-robin competition, which will involve teams in the under-16s (Thursday) and opens (Friday) divisions from central schools acrossthe central west area.
The massive week of league will conclude this weekend with the NSW Country Championships.
Games will be played between Group Ten, Eleven, Nine and Twenty in the under-13s and -14s divisions.
Dubbo District Junior Rugby League president Neil Millgate said these junior events provide a great opportunity to encourage more kids to become involved with rugby league.
“The whole aim is to get kids playing the sport and these gala days provide a great little introduction,” he said.
“It is good to see that all of our local schools are now participating in these competitions. Macquarie Anglican Grammar joined this year and Wellington are also back on board after going through a re-building stage of their junior league.
“The bigger kids are also able to take part as we now hold referees courses within the high schools and alot of them are able to ref the games.
“We’re also lucky that Dubbo is situated in a good central place and with our first-class facilities we are able to continuously hold these events here.”

HUNDREDS FLOCK TO CARNIVAL
Story & Photo By :
ABOUT 800 primary school rugby league players took to the Minor League Park fields for the 62nd Peel Schools Rugby league Carnival last Saturday.
Today it’s the turn of another 800 or so older juniors to grace the Scully Park and Minor League Park fields in the Peel Schools Carnival secondary divisions.
Almost 60 teams are entered in the secondary divisions today, one of which is the Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School Under 13s.
Farrer coach Wayne Hunter was at Saturday’s Primary Peel Schools Day watching a nephew run around and was hopeful his Under 13s could continue a winning run.
At the recent Country Cup day in Tamworth the Farrer 13s beat Narrabri West 58-nil and Glen Innes 28-10 to earn a berth at the regional finals in Armidale.
“They’re a strong side across the board,” Hunter said.
“Normally with 13s you have four or five standouts but we’ve got a very good squad. We don’t lose anything when the reserves run on.”
Farrer is strong in the 13 age group too, with two sides playing in the local Tamworth Minor League. Hunter coaches the Gold 13s and Rob Arantz the Green 13s, with the talent being equally distributed among the two sides.
Peel Schools Carnival president Peter Blom was delighted with Saturday’s turnout when some 66 primary school sides took part.
Today 56 teams are entered with the Under 16 and Open divisions playing at Scully Park and the Under 13/14/15 age divisions at Minor League Park. |

KEEBRA BLUE DEFEAT KEEBRA YELLOW 50-10 IN TITANS CUP FINAL
Story By : dhart KEEBRA PARK SHS
There are certain times in history that things happen and you automatically know where you were and what you were doing.
For example ...The day Michael Jackson died....... I was in the Nerang KFC drive through getting a Hot and Spicy two piece feed "upsize"........the day England won the Rugby World cup...i was in the Nerang KFC Drive through getting a Hot and Spicy two piece feed "upsize"...............the day Keebra Yellow lost 50-10 against Keebra Blue....i wish i was in Nerang getting a Hot and Spicy two piece feed "Upsize" but unfortunately i wasnt and i was in the losing coaches box all alone...after watching the slow procession of staff members move to Mr Woolfs coaches box as his team piled on the points. (Apart from Mr Gould who was loyal to the end)
The game was however played in great spirit and the boys all won on the day with a hard but fair display of rugby league.
Congratulations to Charles Tago who lead his team to what turned out to be an emphatic victory after a first half arm wrestle that saw both sides struggle to take control of the game.
Zac Walsh was a worthy man of the match and continues to improve with each outing. For Mr Harts team, Dion Taumata gave his all and Captain Alex Tobler was gallant in defeat and lead the team well throughout the competition.
Well done all the boys involved and look forward to Keebra defending the title in 2011.

GIANT COWBOYS JUNIOR LEAGUE CARNIVAL TO HIT TOWNSVILLE
Story & Photo By : Nth QLD COWBOYS Media Release
Townsville is set to host one of Australia’s largest underage junior league carnivals this weekend, as the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys present the 2010 Laurie Spina Shield, proudly sponsored by Red Rooster.
With 54 teams, 810 players, 180 coaches and officials and over 2,000 supporters converging at Brothers Rugby League Club over 25-26 June, this will be a huge two-day event, culminating in the final at Dairy Farmers Stadium.
Teams from as far away as Biloela, Winton and Gladstone will travel across North and Central Queensland to attend, with the event’s first interstate team – the Matraville Tigers – travelling from Sydney to compete.
2009 carnival winners Edmonton Storm will also return to defend their title for the showcase event on the Cowboys Junior Development program in 2010.
Laurie Spina Shield participants will be an integral part of this Saturday’s Cowboys’ game day, as two teams compete for the title from 4.45pm in the curtain-raiser to the Cowboys v Sharks Toyota Cup match.
Junior team members will also form a guard of honour as the Cowboys run on for the main game, with the Fastest Feet Relay to also be contested across the field at half time for prizes generously donated by Red Rooster.
Open to players under 11 years of age and now in its fourteenth year, the Laurie Spina Shield focuses on participation, sportsmanship and enjoying the ‘greatest game of all’.
The Shield began in 1997 and is named after Laurie Spina, the North Queensland Cowboys’ first captain, who continues to be a tireless contributor to the development of junior rugby league in North Queensland.
Cowboys Development Manager Dean Payne says that providing opportunities for young players to gain experience through a regional competition is a crucial part of the Cowboys Development charter.
“The Laurie Spina Shield has been a breeding ground for current Cowboys players including Michael Morgan, Ray Thompson, James Segeyaro, Jack Cooper, Kyle Feldt and Chris McLean,” Payne said.
“It’s very rewarding to see that the carnival is considered to be such an important event on the calendar by the junior league community, and we thank the teams, officials, spectators and Red Rooster for their support.”
Franchisee of Red Rooster Mackay/Townsville Christine Allen and her team are excited to be part of the competition in 2010.
“We welcome all of the visitors to our beautiful part of the world and wish the competitors the best of luck for a fun and successful event – may the best team win!” she said. |

The NSWCCC are ready for the Australian Secondary School Rugby League Championship starting in a couple weeks on the sunny Gold Coast.
Both team rested players with NSW Under 18 reps sitting on both benches, the Eels gave some new boys from the county & from Queensland a run.
Young Beau White from west of Toowoomba scored first, but this was the only joy for the Parra boys as the NSW CCC have turned into a very well oiled and dangerous footy team under champion coach Mick Lewis.
After a close first half, the teams went into the shed with a scores line of 14 - 4, the CCC state team holding a slight advantage.
The second half the Combined Catholic Colleges side dominated across the magnificent St. Marys Stadium to blow the Eels out of the water

FARRER KEEPS DOUBLE HOPES ALIVE IN CUP
Story By :
FARRER will have a double presence in the CRL Country Cup Northern NSW semi-finals after prevailing in the 13s and 15s in yesterday’s regional finals in Tamworth.
The Tamworth school was competing against Narrabri High and Glen Innes High for the right to represent North West in Armidale next month.
The three schools had qualified for the Tamworth carnival by winning their respective gala days but, despite putting up some stiff opposition, the visiting teams were unable to topple Farrer.
Farrer went through undefeated in both the 13s and U15s.
The 15s though was very tightly contested, with only six points the difference in two of the three games.
“It was a really good contest,” Greater Northern Development manager Jamie McCormack said.
“All three teams were in with a show. Farrer just outlasted them.”
They were severely tested, especially by Narrabri.
The two sides were locked at 10-all at one stage but a converted try saw Farrer pull away for a 16-10 win.
They then accounted for Glen Innes 28-16.
Narrabri, deservedly, did challk up a win for the day, edging out Glen Innes 20-14 when they clashed. It was the reverse in the 13s, with Glen Innes triumphant 32-12.
Farrer was on another level though.
They brushed aside Narrabri 52-nil before defeating Glen Innes 28-10.
“They had a number of really big kids, which proved the difference,” McCormack said.
The Armidale carnival will be held on July 28. |

Second rower Hayden Chapman will be involved in Dubbo College’s Astley Cup campaign against Orange High at Apex Oval this afternoon. Like most of his team mates, Chapman plays club rugby league and is pictured here on the charge for CYMS in last years under-16s grand final. |
DISCIPLINE, DEFENCE COLLEGE’S PRIORITIES
Story & Photo By :
Dubbo College’s rugby league side will need to employ all the discipline they’ve got when they take the field against Orange High School in their opening round clash of the Astley Cup competition tomorrow afternoon, according to coach Craig May.
In their past few performances May said they’ve somewhat struggled to control their own game.
“It will all be about discipline and keeping their cool,” he said.
“There has been a few games this year that we have given away silly penalties late in the tackle count.
“Our defence is also not so in order, we tend to focus on scoring tries and let the defensive side of our game go.”
A win over Orange will certainly boost their odds of taking out the competition, which also includes Bathurst High, who would have to be the favourites.
“Unfortunately we lost to Bathurst in the Arrive Alive cup, now known as they school boys cup, earlier in the year, so we already know that will be a difficult game against them,” May said.
“It will be interesting because we don’t know much about the Orange side and while it is only the first round we obviously need to win to improve our chances.”
The Dubbo side are strengthened by the fact a number of their players have been exposed to some high levels of football this season, with some performances in the current Group 11 first grade and reserve grade competitions.
“We’ve a solid side and I think with a lot of the boys having that Group 11 experience will probably help us,” May said.
“It will just depend on whether they turn up to play or not.
“There should be a great atmosphere with a lot of people coming to watch in support.”
Tomorrow’s game kicks off a big three weeks for the side, not only with their Astley Cup commitments but with the Western area final against Gilgandra and the Peel schools knockout in Tamworth.
As the second round of the Astley Cup clashed with the second round of the Andrew Ryan Country Cup, May said it was decided to enter the boys in the Peel knockout instead. |

GROUP 10 YOUNGSTERS PIPPED BY COUNTBACK
Story & Photo By : BY SAM DEBENHAM THE Group 10 under 16s side has advanced to the Country Championships second-tier final after going undefeated through the southern conference of the championships in Wagga Wagga on the weekend.
Only for-and-against kept them from contesting the top-tier southern final after they drew 8-all with Group 9 in their semi-final on Sunday morning.
Group 9 progressed courtesy of their better differential from the first-round matches on Saturday.
Nonetheless, the campaign was a big success for the side, which had a distinct Orange flavour to it.
Five Orange CYMS juniors - Terry Brown, Sam Coyte, James Prestwidge, Dylan Frecklington and Hayden Spencer - all performed strongly for the blue and whites.
Blayney’s Daniel Wallace also impressed.
Group 10 opened their title push with a strong 26-10 win over Group 14 on Saturday, dominating in a six-tries-to-one performance.
They came up against a willing Group 9 outfit who were riding high on a 32-4 victory over Group 6 the day before, and it was hard going for both sides in the two-tries apiece stalemate.
St Pat’s hooker Josh Lander scored a try for Group 10 along with Cowra’s Dominic Ashe, matched by tries to Christopher Heald and Sebastian McInerney for Group 9.
The Gladiators’ big win on the Saturday gave them rights to go through to the final.
There they met Group 16 and defeated them 24-12 in a strong showing which would have left Group 10 with mixed emotions knowing it could have been them in the same situation.
Meanwhile, the Group 10 under 15s fell short of progressing in their southern Country Championships campaign after going down 26-20 to Group 6 on Saturday.
The under 15s outfit included Orange CYMS’ Matthew Boss, Harrison Muller, Jamahl Wright and Kane Ratcliffe. |

TAMWORTH PUBLIC ADVANCES IN SHIELD
Story & Photo By : Grant Robertson
TAMWORTH Public School made it all the way to the semi- finals of the Classic Shield last year and this year’s team is starting to warm to the task as well.
TPS was too good for Hillvue in Thursday’s third round of action with a 22-nil halftime lead making way for a 32-4 win at Chillingworth Oval in Tamworth.
Hooker Matt Schubert scored two tries while Harrison Buhler, Ethan Parry, Eric Fowler and Zac Chmieluk were the others to cross the line.
Hillvue’s Dylan Haines got his side on the board in the second half with a try but the teamwork of the TPS side ensured it progressed to the next round.
Coach Kevin Squires said a lot of the TPS boys play together on the weekend and are a well-organised side.
Buhler, Fowler and Jordan Sharpe were heavily involved in the action.
TPS had beaten Tamworth South and Kootingal Public in the first two rounds. |
DAVID NOFALOUMA’S IN A LEAGUE OF HIS OWN
Story By : VERA BERTOLA
KEEP an eye on the name David Nofalouma because it’s one you’re going to hear more about in the future.
The big 16-year-old, of Ruse, has been selected into his third NSW rugby league team in little more than 12 months, a feat in itself but also an honour that speaks volumes about his potential.
Nofalouma’s S.G. Ball representative team manager Craig Baker nominated the teenager for the Macarthur Chronicle Junior Sports Star, impressed by the outstanding achievements of his young charge.
What also is impressive is the fact Nofalouma is competitive with players well above his own age.
The John Therry Catholic High School student last year was selected to represent the NSW under-16s against the Queensland under-16s in the curtain-raiser to State of Origin I in Melbourne.
This year he has been selected in the Blues 18s, despite still being only 16. He went into camp last Friday to prepare for tomorrow night’s blockbuster against the Maroons at Lang Park.
Nofalouma will be back in Queensland in July to represent NSW Combined Catholic Colleges under-18s at the Australian Schoolboys Championships at Burleigh Heads.
The teenager said he liked to run from the fullback position and was a strong attacking player.
“I scored quite a few tries for the Magpies in S.G. Ball,” he said.
In fact, he helped guide Wests to the semi-finals after the team had lost only one game during the regular season to finish second on the competition ladder. |
STUDENTS BRAVE COLD FOR ANDREW RYAN CUP
Story By :
The Dubbo round of the Andrew Ryan Cup was held at Apex Oval yesterday with Dubbo schools braving the freezing cold conditions in an effort to earn a spot in the finals.
Dubbo South Campus were too strong in the under-13s division while St John’s College were the better side in the Under-15s.
The competition is named after former Dubbo boy and St John’s College Student Andrew Ryan, who has gone on to achieve great things in rugby league.
He is the current Canterbury Bulldogs captain in the NRL and has attained Australian Kangaroo and NSW Origin representative honours.
In the under-13s, students from St John’s, Peak Hill Central and Dubbo South campus fought it out, with Delroy unfortunately forced to pull out.
While the under-15s involved four teams, St John’s College, Dubbo Senior and South Campuses and Peak Hill.
The Andy Ryan Cup extends throughout the western region with the competition to be held in Blayney tomorrow and in Forbes next week.
The winners of each of the three days then make their way into the western regional final to be held on back in Dubbo on June 29.
From there the regional winners will head to Cootamundra in late July to take on the best school from the Southern division competition, Wagga and South Coast.
Country Rugby League’s western region development officer Wade Judd said it was pleasing to that the event continued to be so well supported.
“We’ve been running this competition for five years now and it continues to be a strong event,” he said.
“Peak Hill certainly made an impression, it was great to see them being so competitive up against the bigger schools.” |

ENDEAVOUR HOLD ON FOR NARROW WIN Story & Photo's By :
In the much anticipated CHS University Shield Grand Final replay, Endeavour Sports held on for the narrowest of wins.
Endeavour held onto a 14 - 0 half time lead only to watch The Hills Sports come back to with in 2 points and just ran out of time and were looking the goods in the 2nd half.
Both side were a bit rusty with games being postponed due to the terrible weather in Sydney over the past few weeks, todays game was played in sunny conditions on a still wet 'Field of Dreams' at Endeavour Sports High School.
Held scoreless in the second half, the home side struggled to hold the ball and complete their sets, which both teams were guilty.
The first half was a struggle as neither school could get the upper hand and it took 15 minutes for the first try when Endeavour half Penani Manumalealii chip kicked over the heads of the Hills defensive line and regathered and ran the last 30 meters unopposed to score near the posts.
Paul Mclory added the extra's to give his side a 6 - 0 lead.

Hay, soon to turn 18, is entitled to be excited about what he has achieved this year, his latest success coming with a place in the New South Wales Combined Opens team.
He was a member of the Greater Western team that played in the State carnival last Monday to Wednesday, a team coached by Blayney’s Tony Tilburg.
Western finished with one win from three games but the Gilgandra High School student had done enough to get a place on the NSWCHS bench.
With two days off after his school’s commitments Hay was back on the field for Dubbo CYMS in their Group 11 win over Narromine Jets on Saturday night and played off the bench for first grade as well.
“I’ve very excited about it all, it’s a great team to belong with and one that has a lot of tradition,” he said about his CHS selection.
“It was a tough three days of football with a lot of very good players in all the teams. To get into the State team is an honour.
“I thought I played reasonably well and was hoping to get picked, but you never know in these things.”
NSWCHS will play in the Australian Schoolboys Carnival on the Gold Coast over three days from July 11-16 at Burleigh Heads.
From that carnival selectors will name an Australian Schoolboys side to play in the United Kingdom prior to Christmas.
Dubbo College Senior Campus’s Max Ray - who was a team-mate of Hay’s in the premiership winning Dubbo CYMS under-18s side last year - was an Australian Schoolboy team member in 2009.
Tony Tilburg said Hay’s State selection came as no surprise to him.
“Jordan had an exceptional carnival,” he said.
“He ran strongly with the ball, off loaded to supports and backed up his games with dogged defence.
“He deserved to be picked and I’m confident he will be an impact player for the team off the bench.”
Gilgandra High School coach Tony Wilson, also heaped praise on Hay.
“He’s a great kid and very dedicated to everything he does,” Wilson said.
“Being a member of the St George Illawarra development squad, Jordan’s had the opportunity to go to a number of training camps and has programs at home he works on by himself.
“He has spoken about Wayne Bennett being involved with the squad and he’s taken a keen interest in how he’s going from time to time.
“He’ll go all right and all our students at Gil hope he does as well.
“Jordan was signed by St George as a 15-year-old and recently has his contract extended.
“He will finish his Higher School Certificate this year and go down to Wollongong and combine university studies with his football.”
Dubbo CYMS coaches Greg McIntosh (under-18s) and Blake Tremain-Cannon (first grade) are both big fans of Hay and the young back-rower has been getting some time off the bench for this grade this season.
Hay’s CHS selection comes the same year as being named in the Country Rugby League under-18s side but from all reports Country’s game against Queensland will be held the same weekend that the schoolboys carnival gets underway.
And while Western celebrated the success of Hay’s CHS selection, for the first time in a number of years there will be no Western players in the State under-15s side. |

KEEBRA TO PLAY KEEBRA IN TITANS CUP FINAL
Story By : Mr Hart Keebra Park SHS
It will be a case of mate against mate in next Mondays Titans Cup Final after two Keebra Park sides made it through to thee finals.
Mr Harts Keebra Yellow will face off against Mr Woolfs Keebra Blue after downing PBC and Woodridge respectively.
Dion Taumata was a standout in the win over PBC with a couple of 40-20's and some speculative ball playing that came up trumps on the night. Captain Alex Tobler lead a strong forward pack with Matt Wycliff, Jahmin Gernhoffer and Bodie Apps putting in huge efforts in defence.
A big thanks to all the boys and as you would have expected the smart money is on Mr Hart and experience to be tooooooooo strong for the gallant Keebra Blues.
At last call the Blues were 68-1 outsiders and you would be lucky to find a bookie to take a bet against the Yellows. Mr Hart is also looking good for the coach of the year accolade and rumour has it that the coaches shield is already at the engravers.

STRAPPING Knights centre Dale Clacherty hopes he never wakes up from this dream season.
The Thornton Beresfield Bears junior was presented on Wednesday night with the prestigious Carlson Club-Andrew Johns Medal as the Newcastle Knights' stand-out 17-year-old player this year.
Previous winners of the award, which pays tribute to former North Newcastle and North Sydney international Brian Carlson, include Johns (1992), Brett Kimmorley (1993), Anthony Quinn (1999), Kade Snowden (2003) and Jarrod Mullen (2004).
Clacherty received the medal at the Knights' junior awards presentation at Wests Leagues Club, just two days after being named in the NSW under-18 team to play Queensland in the curtain-raiser to the second State of Origin game at Suncorp Stadium on June 16.
The All Saints Maitland St Mary's student was selected last week to represent NSW Combined Catholic Colleges at the Australian under-18 secondary schools championships. Those titles will be held in Queensland's Burleigh Heads from the 11 th to 16 th July, from which selectors will name the Australian Schoolboys squad.
Clacherty also won the S G Ball (under 18s) strength encouragement award last night. Nathan Cooper was players' player and Chris Knight was player of the year.

SUCCESS TO RIDE ON PERFORMANCE UNDER PRESSURE
Story & Photo By :
A number of Dubbo rugby league players will venture south to Wagga Wagga tomorrow as members of the under-15 and -16 Group 11 representative squads, to make their mark on the Country Rugby League junior championships.
Six Dubbo players make up the under-15s side headed by Nyngan-based Col Wright, while an impressive nine Dubbo players have been selected in the under-16s squad, directed by Wayne Sing.
In their opening matches on Saturday the under-16s will tackle Group 14, while the under-15s will meet Group 20.
Each team is guaranteed three games across the weekend, how they fare in their first game will decide their opponents for the second two matches.
Despite a few injuries bringing some late changes to the under-16s, Sing believes his side is on track to do well.
“The beauty of our side is that our bench is very strong,” he said.
“We had a trial against Group 10 a few weeks ago and although we lost I felt we still did well,” he said.
“It was a tight game and although we are not the biggest side the boys showed they are mobile and smart ball players.”
Given these two sides are competing at such a high level, Sing believes the key to their success will ride on their ability to perform under pressure.
“They can’t afford to make errors at this level, particularly when coming out of their own end,” he said.
“They need to complete their sets and try to maintain as much field possession down the other end as they can.” |
ONE TRY GETS THE BETTER OF JUNIORS
Story By : BEN LONERGAN
In an entertaining yet frustrating game the Glen Innes Magpies under 18’s side went down narrowly to the Moree Boomerangs 30-26.
The first half was marred by what can only be described as dismal refereeing and constant handling errors by both sides.
Glen was never allowed into the game in the first half being constantly penalised and it seemed the opposition could do what ever it pleased.
The Boomerangs opened the scoring, but the Magpies hit straight back through in form centre Craig Browne.
Both sides shared the lead throughout the match but it was the Boomerangs that came out on top in an engaging second half.
Browne was again hard to stop out wide, lock Beau Dawson was outstanding and is proving to be one of the best juniors in the Group 19 competition and Louis Chapman-Burgess is continuing to impress and improve with every game, he pulled off some bone rattling hits in the second half. |

St Joseph’s College’s under-16 team swept all before it at the Gold Coast Titans challenge last week. |
ST JOSEPH'S WINS CHALLENGE
Story & Photo By :
ST Joseph's College rugby league players had the right amount of ticker to claim top honours at the Gold Coast Titans under-16 challenge last Thursday at Ballina.
The event, in its second year, drew a field of 22 teams from across the North Coast.
Taking victory in the clusters were: St Joseph's College, Banora Point; Mt St Patrick College, Murwillumbah; and Kyogle High School and St Johns College, Woodlawn.
Each team participated in last Thursday's final, with St Joseph's maintaining its unblemished record to take the title.
St Joseph's sent 17 of its finest to play three matches and the results were impressive. In game one it beat Woodlawn 20-4, in game two it shut down Kyogle 16-8, and in the final game edged Mt St Patrick's 12-8.
The win over inaugural winner of the shield, Woodlawn College, was particularly impressive.
Titans players Gavin Judd, Jordan Atkins and Sam Meskill showed their support by attending the event.
The competition was organised by Country Rugby League and was sponsored by the Titans.
Country Rugby League development officer Mike Donnelly said he was impressed by the number of schools that had entered. |

HIGH HOPES: Some of the region’s brightest young rugby league talent were put through their paces by the St George Illawarra Dragons’ High Performance Unit coaching staff yesterday at Wade Park. |
DRAGONS HEAD TO ORANGE TO HELP FOSTER GAME’S YOUNG TALENT
Story & Photo BY : MICHELLE COOK
FOR many young boys from the Central West aspiring to a career in the NRL, they have to make the decision to leave home and move to Sydney to follow this dream.
For a group of 15 boys yesterday, their dreams were brought to them when the St George Illawarra High Performance Unit ran a training session in Orange.
Boys from Bathurst, Dubbo, Oberon, Nyngan, Cowra and Lake Cargelligo attended the afternoon, which included a skills session, a video analysis and some time in the gym.
HPU head coach Ben Haran said the group was about helping young players work towards the next level without expecting them to move away from home.
“We’re not big on taking them down to Wollongong away from their families,” Haran said.
“We’d rather them be at home and train with us occasionally. Then when they’re ready to leave home, they can come down to the NYC (National Youth Cup).”
Of the 15 players at yesterday’s training, seven were on contract with the HPU and have regular sessions.
The others had been spotted at different games in the region and been targeted as players the HPU would like to keep an eye on.
The HPU was established at St George Illawarra at the start of last year by NRL coach Wayne Bennett to help develop young players so they can work their way to higher honours.
Those with HPU contracts have training sessions every eight weeks and alternate between Wollongong and a regional area.
The contracted players also get the opportunity to work with some of the players they hope will one day be their team-mates.
“It’s just an opportunity to come down and spend some time with the NYC squad,” Haran explained.
“They also join in on some NRL sessions. It’s pretty exciting for them.”
For the players who aren’t on contract, they will be discussed after the session and if they have impressed, they could earn a contract with the HPU.
Orange already has a link with St George Illawarra with Scott Rosser and Jared Brodrick both part of the NYC squad. |

Rugby league player Nick Ehsman was back in Glen Innes last week for the first time this season.
Ehsman is enjoying a successful season with NRL team the Sydney Roosters in the Toyota Cup Competition. He is starting at lock and has been one of the standouts for his team who is running eighth in the competition.
On Wednesday he and fellow Roosters player, Gunnedah boy Reece Jaeger conducted a coaching session for the members of the Glen Innes High School Gifted and Talented Rugby League (GATRL) students (Celtic Colts).
The session started with 25 minutes of rigorous fitness training.
“Ehs passed on the message that his pre season training was like a boot camp, most of it was fitness,” Celtic Colts coach Richard Taylor said.
Ehsman then put the boys through some simple ball skills drills and Jaeger ran some defensive drills.
Taylor said he thought the Colts players took a lot away from the session.
“It was interesting, it was good to be coached by the elite,” he said.
Taylor said that Ehsman expressed the importance of the simple things like basic skills.
“They are great guys, it was great to have them.”

TITANS LAUNCH COMMUNITY TICKETING PROGRAM
Story By : Gold Coast TITANS Media Release
The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans have today launched a fantastic community initiative which will provide a platform to raise money for Gold Coast District Junior Rugby League clubs.
The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans’ Community Ticketing Program will see GCDJRL clubs given the opportunity to sell tickets to nominated Titans home games, with $10 from each adult and family ticket being donated back to the club which sold the ticket.
The Community Ticketing Program will enable the Jetstar Titans to provide funding directly back into grass roots rugby league on the Gold Coast.
The program begins this week with six GCDJRL clubs electing to sell tickets to Monday night’s Round 12 clash against the Sydney Roosters at Skilled Park.
In a further boost for the GCDJRL, the club which sells the most tickets over the course of the five games will win a training session with the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans.
The program was today launched by Jetstar Titans Business Development Manager and Former Origin Great (FOG) Chris Close, who was joined by representatives from six junior Gold Coast clubs and GCDJRL chairman Peter McGrath.
“This is a great initiative which provides funds directly back into supporting grass roots rugby league on the Gold Coast,’’ said Mr Close.
“It is a win-win situation for both the Titans and the Gold Coast District Junior Rugby League clubs.’’
GCDJRL Chairman Peter McGrath added: “This program is a continuation of the strong partnership that has developed between the Titans and GCDJRL,’’ said Mr McGrath.
“This very important initiative will not only put dollars into the bank accounts of local clubs but also reinforces the commitment of the Gold Coast Titans to the development of the GCDJRL.’’
The GCDJRL clubs who have elected to participate in this program are:
* Helensvale Hornets
* Burleigh Bears
* Mudgeeraba Redbacks
* Tugun Seahawks
* Southport Tigers
* Nerang Roosters
The nominated games to which tickets can be purchased are:
Round 12: Titans V Roosters – Monday 31st May 7.00pm
Round 14: Titans V Sea Eagles – Friday 11th June 7.30pm
Round 16: Titans V Knights – Sunday 27th June 3.00pm
Round 22: Titans V Eels – 6-9th August (exact game time TBC)
Round 26: Titans V Tigers – 3-5th September (exact game time TBC)
Junior clubs not already participating in this initiative can still get involved by simply contacting their club and the Jetstar Titans. |
FARRER SIDES THROUGH TO NEXT STAGE OF CUP
Story By :
FARRER Memorial Agricultural High School dominated the Tamworth Country Cup Under 13 and 15 Carnival at the new Minor League fields in Tamworth yesterday.
Farrer’s two sides will now go through to the regional Country Cup Carnival in Tamworth on June 16, said organiser Jamie McCormack.
“They won the 13s and the 15s – just a little bit too strong for the other sides today,” McCormack said.
“They’ll play in the regional carnival against the winners from Inverell, Armidale and Narrabri in Tamworth on June 16.
“McCarthy Catholic College, Peel and Tamworth High all had some good kids and a number of players who don’t normally play league as well. They said they enjoyed it and might, hopefully, play a bit more.”
Farrer’s Under 13s beat Peel 62-nil in the only Under 13 game while Farrer beat THS 24-8, McCarthy 36-4 and Peel 48-nil in their Under 15 clashes. McCarthy beat Peel 26-18 and drew 22-all with Tamworth High while Peel beat 18-16 in the other game.
Dan Mitchell coached the McCarthy Catholic College Under 15s and was delighted with their efforts.
“A win, a draw and a loss,” Mitchell said.
“They went well for their first games together. Farrer were too strong but our boys didn’t give up and they kept going. And they all walked off with a smile on their face. That was the main thing. It was also great to use these new grounds too.”
Luke Wiegold played in the second row for McCarthy and the Year 9 15-year-old was delighted with the win, loss and draw. He also plays for Collegians on Saturday’s as does Jaak Fisher.
However, he’s tipping a Queensland win in tonight’s first State of Origin, while Fisher is going for a NSW win.
A hooker or second rower 14-year-old Year 9 student Jaak Fisher said yesterday was a “great day, we played all right”.
Keeghan Faint plays for Collegians in the local Minor League but was ball boy yesterday.
“I’m not playing rugby league this year,” the 13-year-old Year 7 student said.
“Collegians couldn’t get a team so I’m playing rugby union on Friday nights and will play league again next year.” |

AUST UNI INTERSTATE MATCH CURTAIN RAISER TO NSW CUP
Story By : Steve LITTLE
A bruising encounter last week with Auckland has left the Bears with additional injury worries but spirits are high as the team look forward to the home crowd support of North Sydney Oval.
Indeed a large crowd is expected with the annual Australian Universities Rugby League Interstate Shield Match between NSW and QLD taking place on Saturday ahead of the NSW Cup match against the Windsor Wolves.
NSW won last years match 19-18 at Suncorp Stadium but the Queensland side has dominated the contest over the past decade or so and will be keen to take the shield back home with them.
The match is also the selection trial for the Australian Universities Rugby League squad, picked to tour England and France at the end of the year, ensuring that a lot will be at stake for members of both teams.
Both sides are coached by former NRL players; NSW has Brendon Reeves (Illawarra and Manly) now in his 3rd year, whilst Queensland have former Bronco Darren Smith, who played in the team last year and has now taken over the coaching roll.
Whilst it’s not ‘State of Origin’ level, the boys still play with the same passion and it's always a hard fought match which should be an entertaining curtain raiser.

HAY, LANGBY SELECTED FOR COUNTRY UNDER-18S
Story & Photo By : LUCY ROWLES
The list of representative duties for CYMS’ Jordan Hay and Macquarie’s Matt Langby continue to grow and grow, with the boys announced as members of the under-18s Country Rugby League side this week.
They will play in a State of Origin-like clash against their Queensland counterparts on July 10.
The budding young players were chosen alongside two of their under-18s Western Rams representative team mates Kirk Roberts and Andrew Mendes from Bathurst.
The Rams recently competed at the NSW under-18s Country Championships.
Having worked a lot with the boys in their club football, CYMS under-18s coach Greg McIntosh and Macquarie’s Greg Edwards were not at all surprised by their selection.
The pair believe the boys have outstanding traits that allow them to be noticed on the football field without being too dominating.
“Jordan is a very complete player. He has the attitude and leads by example,” McIntosh said.
“I think one of his most important qualities is that he controls his emotions, if he gets knocked about he is not phased by it, and just continues to play to his strengths.”
“Matt is not a flashy footballer, he just has a good work ethic and does the little things right,” Edwards said.
No matter how the side goes when they come up against Queensland they are sure to make a great impact, with Langby in the backs and Hay in the front row.
“Matt will be a big asset to the side, as he has matured over the years and stepped up in his footy,” Edwards said.
“Defensively Jordan is very sound, he has the ability to promote the ball and he’s got the judgment on the field,” McIntosh said.
For boys who come from small country towns, Hay from Gilgandra, and Langby from Warren, Edwards said to be included in the side was a massive achievement.
“It is a big thing for kids out this way to get chosen for country,” he said.
“With this selection people will be looking at these boys even closer, there will be scouts at their games and they have the potential to get noticed for further selection.” |
UNDER 16 TIGERS TAKE ON TOP GUNS
Story By :
Canowindra under 16 Tigers took on competition heavyweights Red Bend on Saturday and gave them a run for their money.
Canowindra kicked it out on the full at the initial kickoff putting themselves under pressure in the opening minute. This tested the defence, but the boys were up for the challenge
The Tigers completed their first set and got down deep into the Red Bend half. Red Bend dropped the ball early in the tackle count.
This gave Canowindra great field position to launch an attack. Simon Whatman passed to Dan Middleton, who dummied and stepped towards the line before off loading to Kain Earsman who dived over for the first try of the match. Dylan Beer converted and the Tigers led 6-0.
Strong defence form Tim “Wyzee” Wythes, Simon Whatman and Kain Earsman helped to keep Red Bend scoreless for the next 20 minutes.
However they finally broke through just before half time and the teams left the field at 6 all.
Both teams came out firing, but it was Red Bend that scored first from a lucky bounce off their kick. Canowindra was determined to stay in the contest. The new look backline was working well.
Centre Nick Willson was doing some great runs, off loads and kick chase tackles, ably supported by centre Mick Clyburn and fullback Jack “JK” Knight.
The forwards were also combining effectively with back rowers Kain Earsman and Blake Willson hitting it up hard along with front rower Brodie Beer.
This bought the Tigers down close to Red Bend’s try line. The ball went from left side to right where it found five eighth Jayden Brown, who stepped off his right foot against the grain of the defence and scored next to the posts. Dylan Beer converted again taking the score to 12 all.
For the next 20 minutes Red Bend dominated field
position but could not find a way through the Tigers defence, who held on for the rest of the game with the score remaining in a deadlock.
This was a great effort for the boys holding out the big guns of the comp. Notable mentions go to Simon Whatman (30 tackles), Blake Willson (24 tackles), Kain Earsman and Dylan Beer (22 tackles). If the boys can take this form to Condo next weekend, we should be able to give them a shake. |
