HOLY CROSS TO TAKE ON PATS POWER

Holy Cross College Ryde will play the all powerful Patrician Brothers College Blacktown in the 1st gio Schoolboys Cup Semi Final this year after an impressive 20 - nil win over Westfields SHS at Leichhardt Oval on Friday arvie.

With a combined 9 Australian Schoolboys this should be a very exciting and fast Semi Final. Holy Cross have 3 Schoolboys to follow in the foot steps of last years skipper Curtis Sirosen who is now playing 1st grade in the NRL.

The Holy Cross backs are very dangerous with Mitchell Moses and Bradley Dietz & Luke Brooks in the halves, these stars of the future will line up against the England Academy in Melbourne on the 5th of August.

BLACKTOWN: PATRICIAN BROTHERS' HARD YARDS

OurFootyMedia

PATRICIAN Brothers' College Blacktown rugby league coach Peter Ross said dedication to training was the catalyst for the school's five Australian Schoolboys selections last week.

Students Chad McGill, Chris Smith, Paul Simona, Pauli Pauli and Halauafu Lavaka were selected in the 18-man squad to play England Academy on Sunday, August 5, in Canberra.

"It's certainly a tremendous achievement for the school and the boys," Ross said.

"This generation is definitely the best to have come through the school. It's one of those freakish things that happens."

The players were members of the Australian Schoolboys Championship winning NSW side last week.

"We have a tight knit program," Ross said. "It's not just one individual coach, we have Toyota Cup-quality coaching here."

Pauli was a member of the NSW under-18s side that beat Queensland prior to Origin II.

Quakers Hill's Terra Sancta College student Matthew Lodge was also named in the squad.
KEEBRA AND PBC INTO QLD SEMI FINALS
Keebra Park and PBC kept the flag flying for Gold Coast Schoolboy football today with wins over their Brisbane based competition in the GIO National Schoolboy Cup.

Keebra went head to head with Marsden SHS in a first v fourth encounter while second Place PBC took on Wavell SHS who finished the rounds in third spot.

Keebra were slow to get off the mark and after a 6-0 half time win came out to post 3 more unanswered tries in the second stanza.

Ill discipline cost Marsden dearly with two players sent to the bin following an after tackle push and shove in the second half and they never got back into the game.

Experience in these knock out games gos a long way to gaining a victory and once again this proved to be the case with Keebra defending their line well and capitalising on the Marsden mistakes.

In the other game PBC held out a valiant Wavell who came close to snatching the points with a second half come back. the final scores were: Keebra 30 defeated Marsden 0 and PBC 18 defeated Wavell 14

NSW CHS LOSES DECIDER AT PORT MACQUARIE
OurFootyMedia
DUBBO Macquarie under-18s star Swade Dunn may not have helped NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) to a victory in the Australian Secondary Schools Championships but he did catch the attention of scouts that were keeping an eagle eye on proceedings.

CHS was beaten 30-10 by NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) in the final at Port Macquarie yesterday.

It was the second time the Catholic side had beaten CHS during the course of the tournament after getting a 22-18 result earlier in the week.

A classy five-eighth, Dunn played a pivotal role in getting the CHS side into the final but admitted the side was beaten by a better team in the final.

“We played four games during the week, two against Queensland and two against CCC,” Dunn said.

“I thought we played well against Queensland but CCC were bigger, fitter and used the ball well, but it has been a good week.”

With Group 11 having a general bye this weekend, Dunn will get the opportunity to recuperate before he takes Macquarie into the under-18s semi-finals.

The weekend off is a welcome relief for Dunn, who trained solidly for a week under coach John Stanley before the competition began.

“The whole thing is a bit more intense than just playing club football. We trained for a week prior to playing and after every match it was into the ice baths for recovery,” Dunn said.

Yesterday’s match between CHS and CCC was the first time the two squads have met in the final since 2008, when current South Sydney halfback Adam Reynolds and former Manly winger William Hopoate led CHS to an 18-12 win over the CCC side, which featured NSW and Australian representative Jamal Idris.

Afterwards the Australian Schoolboys squad was announced and, not surprisingly, CCC dominated with nine of the 17 players selected coming from the Catholic squad.

JAI AND JACK GAIN AUSSIE SELECTION
OurFootyMedia
With the conclusion of the ASSRL Under 18 title came the selection of the Australian schoolboys side and Keebra Park is proud to announce the inclusion of hard running winger Jack Goodsall and hard to handle second row/lock, Jai Arrow.

Jai and Jack were standouts in the South coast side that won the recent Queensland titles and both have worked hard throughout the year and thoroughly deserve their selections.

It was a particularly pleasing result for Jack who has progressed from the Keebra Park Open 4ths and continues to improve off the back of a positive attitude and willingness to put his body on the line.

While the tournament is over the school football is only just starting with the South QLD semi-finals set for Wednesday night at Pizzey Park.

So well done boys and heres looking towards the finals of the GIO Cup.

NSW CCC Dominate this years Australian Schoolboy team with 10 players selected after a week of Championship footy at Port MacQuarie.

2012 Finalists NSW CHS had 4 players selected, Queensland had the 2 Keebra boyz and the ACT has another schoolboy to follow in Hayden Hodge's footsteps.

The boyz get it on with the mighty England Academy side in 2 test matches in August.

Newly capped Schoolboy Chris Smith was a member of the AIS team that defeated the England Academy in December last year, so the can be beaten by a good footy side.

A MACKAY teenager is following in the footsteps of Bulldogs sensation Ben Barba.

Souths' junior rugby league player Kyle Krisanski-Kennedy has signed for the same NRL club as former Mackay player Barba.

Krisanski-Kennedy will move to Sydney at the end of the year. He has signed a three-year deal with the Canterbury Bulldogs.

His signing comes after being identified playing for Capricornia last month at the under-18s four-day rugby league cup championships in Maroochydore by expert talent scout Noel Cleal.

Krisanski-Kennedy, 17, a fullback or halfback was man of the match in his side's second game.

It was his performance in that match, his father Brett said, which sealed the Bulldogs signing for the emerging player.

"At the championships Noel approached Gavin Orr, Kyle's player manager and signalled some interest then," he said.

"It wasn't until when the Storm played the Bulldogs here in Mackay a few weeks ago that we chatted with Noel and he said the Bulldogs were interested in signing Kyle."

The year 12 Mackay State high school student said he had always wanted to play a higher level of rugby league. "It feels awesome to be signed," he said.

"I never dreamt it would happen."

Krisanski-Kennedy will initially play SG Ball, an under-18s competition before moving up to the Toyota Cup under-20s.

Krisanski-Kennedy noted Mackay High School's renowned rugby league academy had developed his overall game.

"Both Nathan Doyle and Bill Esau (academy leaders) have both been fantastic and really helpful to me," he said.

Kyle will again meet with the Bulldogs later in the year to learn more about his initial commitments with the club and its plans for him over the next 12 months.

Matt Boss' inclusion in Hawks premier league squad has paid dividends

AGE IS NO BARRIER FOR GROUP 10’S NEW BOSS
Central Western DAILY

HE’S the baby-faced assassin leading Orange Hawks into a bold new era.

Matt Boss is just 16 but, as he has proven since debuting in the two blues’ 48-16 crushing of the Cowra Magpies, if you’re good enough, you’re old enough.

And Boss is certainly good enough.

Making the move from Orange CYMS to the Bloomfield to finish his Group 10 junior career in the Tigers under 16s last winter, Boss made the progression into the Hawks under 18s squad this season and has been a shining light for the side.

So much so, he caught the eye of new premier league coach James Wynne.

Boss’ deft short passing game and precise kicking has given Hawks the edge in his two appearances in 2012, leading the team along side half Scott Rosser to the big win over Cowra and an upset 38-28 triumph over Bathurst St Pat’s.

“It’s been tough but my teammates have helped me up a lot. It’s a bit of a step up from 18s,” Boss said.

“Size, more so than anything. It’s faster for the first 20 minutes then it starts to slow up a bit, but it’s good.”

He said to get the call up from someone like Wynne, a former international with France, was special.

“I was really privileged. It meant a lot coming from him. He has had a lot of experience at high levels. He has been really good to me and so has the whole team. They’ve really taken me under their wing,” Boss said.

“I feel like I’ve gotten better after each game which is good.

“Jared Brodrick has been really good for me. I’ve sort of been looking up to him. He is my (under 18s) coach as well.”

Boss’ toughest test will be today at Wade Park.

Hawks take on CYMS in the second all-Orange affair of 2012, after the green and golds secured the first game in round one in emphatic fashion 43-6.

After a slow start to the season which netted just one win from seven starts, back-to-back wins has Hawks back and knocking on the door of the top five.

CYMS are going strong in third.

It should be an enthralling match.

“It should be tough but I’m looking forward to it,” Boss said.

“I’m a little bit nervous but once I get out there it should be good.”

Boss will be out there a little earlier than any other first grader today, with the young five-eighth still set on helping his under 18s teammates out as they too enjoy a mini-resurgence, recording a win and a draw in their last two starts.

Boss said the step up had helped improve him as a footballer.

“Taking control of the game, more so, and my kicking. I think I’m getting tougher playing men,” he said.

A trait which will no doubt help in the long run.

Although rapt to be plying his trade in Group 10’s premier league in 2012, the level headed youngster has one eye on climbing the rugby league ladder.

“I’d like to play NRL one day but I’ve got to work a bit harder to get there,” he said.

Kick-off today at Wade Park is at 2.45pm.

DUBBO BOYS DOMINATE GROUP 11 JUNIOR SIDE

GROUP 11 under-13s coach Bernard Wilson will be asking his forwards to lay the platform for his side in the Country Cluster Championships at Wagga Wagga this weekend.

Both 13s and 14s from Group 11 will be represented with Wilson looking after the 13s and Dave Bayley from Forbes in charge of the under-14s who will play against sides from Groups 8, 10 and 20.

Dubbo junior league players dominate the under-13s taking up 13 of the 17 places with Parkes having four representatives. South Dubbo Raiders with five players and St John’s (4) are best represented.

“It’s been a good selection process that saw us having trials in Dubbo between two sides and over at Parkes and Forbes they did the same. Then we brought the best players sides together for the final selection game,” Wilson said.

“I’m confident our forwards will be up to the task. It’s a very good pack and I’m sure they will go well.

“Charlie Bible, the second-rower from Narromine is a very good kid, South Dubbo hooker Kane McDermott is playing well at dummy half and Kiden Mohr, another second-rower from South Dubbo, is also having a good season.

“We also have well-balanced halves with Jai Merritt (South Dubbo) going well alongside his five-eighth from Forbes Warren Baxter.”

In the under-14s there are no Dubbo players with the Nyngan Tigers having the biggest number with seven players.

Neil Millgate, the Dubbo association president, said the season had been a good one so far for the Group 11 and Western Rams junior sides.

“When you consider we won the under-16s and 18s championships this season and currently have six under-16s and three others in the 18s at Toowoomba to play for Country against Queensland on Saturday, the

game is in a good position,” Millgate said.

“I’ll also be looking closely at the results from Wagga and we are fortunate to have two good coaches in Bernard Wilson and Dave Bailey preparing the 13s and 14s. Both were good footballers in their days and are good students of the game and are passing that experience on to the boys.

“While there are no Dubbo boys in the under-14s side, there were a couple in the origin squad from PCYC but they pulled out for different reasons. The other aspect of the 14s is that we in Dubbo are struggling for numbers in that age division here and a number of South Dubbo boys play each week with Nyngan.”

CAN CHAMPS MAKE IT BACK TO BACK IN 2012
ourfootyteam logo
With The Australian Secondary School Rugby League Championships kicking off on Sunday, the big question is can this years star studded NSWCCC side back up and win again this year and add the u18 trophy to the u15's trophy won by the young boys in Darwin 2 weeks ago?

The NSWCCC selectors have huge depth to choose from again this year and have an awesome side to take on both the Queensland schoolboys and the 2010 Champions, the very dangerous NSWCHS.

We will have to wait until the end off the week for all answers.

The 2012 ASSRL u18 Championships gets under way in Port MacQuarie with the Opening Ceromny at 11:00 am.

EUROPEAN SHIELD PREVIEW: GAME 4 – ITALY v GERMANY

Germany and Italy have named their squads for the fourth game of the 2012-13 European Shield, to be held in Piacenza on Saturday, and Italy coach Paul Broadbent and his opposite number Dan Stocks, have both made six changes from their last time out in the competition.

The Italians are missing Rhys Lenarduzzi since playing in Belgrade last month but are bolstered by the recall of Bradford-based hooker Jonathon Marcinczak, who missed the trip to Serbia and the debut of South Wales Scorpions lock Chris Vitalini.

Marcinczak, who played in the 2013 World Cup qualifiers in October, will provide guidance to a trio of young newcomers, Burkina Faso-born forward Nourou Bance, halfback Thomas Piscitelli and utility Giacomo Alfonsi - all of whom have been called up following eye-catching seasons in the domestic Serie A season.

Italy assistant coach Kelly Rolleston is looking forward to the match up against the holders. “We are pleased that after our domestic competition some new faces have come through;” he said. “it’s been better preparation and progression. We have seen some good progress but it will be tested on Saturday when we come up against a more experienced German side.”

The Germans’ changes are remarkably similar. For Lenarduzzi, read Damien Seibold, the experienced pivot who marshalled the Germans so capably against Serbia and Russia, but who has returned to Australia. They too welcome the recall of an experienced dummy-half, Josh Danzey, who has flown back from the Queensland Cup especially to play in the match, and Stocks has called up an experienced British-based hand in London Skolars’ Andy McLean.

“It will be a really tough test; however if we play the way I know we are capable of then I am confident we will be competitive,” said Stocks.

Half his squad come from Heidelberg, with the Lions’ Vincent Spies recalled after missing the Russia game through injury and dynamic youngster Ali Surer introduced to representative rugby league after impressing in the Bundesliga.

Leeds Rhino Jimmy Keinhorst, a hat-trick man against Russia, is unavailable but his brothers Nick and Kristian and Fabrice Fehlemann are all veterans from Germany’s two previous meetings with Italy, both European Shield defeats, in 2008 in Padova and 2009 in Cologne.

Italy, upset in sweltering conditions in Belgrade, will be looking to get off the mark in what is the tightest of competitions. Currently in fourth place, a 13-point win will see the Azzurri top the table, while Germany will seek to complete their 2012 international season with a second victory.

The match, which kicks off at 1800 hrs, will be preceded by an inaugural clash between the respective Under-18s.

FUTURE STARS SHINE ON THE FIELD
Dubbo's Daily LIBERAL

JAMIE O’Neill, Harry Blake and Bailey Downey are relative unknowns in rugby league, but just wait a few years.

All three were faces in the crowd and on the playing fields at Apex Oval when Dubbo hosted yet another primary schools carnival honouring the contribution made to the game over a number of years by David Peachey and Russell Richardson.

The Peachey Shield was for kids from years 5 and 6 and the Richardson Cup for years 3 to 4.

While the winning teams took home the silverware and the honours, there was a group of other boys who received their own plaudits, and that’s where Jamie, Nick and Bailey came into play.

Jamie was one of 10 boys named in the Russell Richardson Cup Team of the Day; and Harry and Bailey were some of the best in the Peachey Shield.

The boys all received a guernsey courtesy of Country Rugby League supplier Carney Sports after accumulating best and fairest points in pool games held throughout the day of the regional finals.

The finals were the culmination of a season of games held at various venues about the western area.

Dubbo’s St Mary’s Catholic School won the Peachey Shield after defeating Holy Family Kelso 20-12 despite trailing 8-0 early in the first half. Jono Davis (St Mary’s) was player of the final.

St Mary’s, coached by Justin Yeo, now qualify for the state final NRL Legend’s day in Sydney on August 22.

In the Richardson Shield final it was victory to Calare Public from Orange who won 12-4 over a gallant outfit from St Augustine’s Catholic School in Narromine with Ben Blimka a standout for his Calare side all day.

Mick Armstrong, the Australian Rugby League development officer based in Bathurst, said the competitions had been an enormous success.

“This year we had 250 teams and played qualifying carnivals in nine towns to cater for close to 3000 players,” he said.

“The teams went to the games at Dubbo, Bathurst, Orange, Portland, Cowra, Dunedoo, Coonamble, Condobolin and Cobar where all the schools had the opportunity to play and earn the right to come to Dubbo for the finals.

“Then today (at Dubbo for the finals) we’ve had an enormous day.

“Even though there was strike action by some teachers in our area we still had a full compliment of teams and not one drop-out. That’s been good.

“We thank the teams and the players for coming, the teachers, the coaches and managers who put the teams together.

“And of course we wouldn’t have had the games without the referees. Today there were some initial concerns because some of the Dubbo Senior College boys were away with Astley Cup and other commitments, but we still we got through. Our volunteer referees have been great.”

You have to admire the quality of the football played in the final pool matches and the semi-finals and finals and as David Peachey and Russell Richardson recalled: “Some of our future NRL players were here at this carnival.”

ST MARY’S WIN THE DAVID PEACHEY SHIELD
Dubbo's Daily LIBERAL
ST MARY’S Dubbo and Orange’s Calare Public dominated the David Peachey and Russell Richardson primary schools finals held in Dubbo yesterday.

Coached by Justin Yeo and led by man of the match Jono Davis, St Mary’s Catholic School defeated Holy Family School Kelso 20-12 to claim the Peachey Shield for year 5-6 teams; while a very good Calare outfit, coached by Darren Kead, eclipsed St Augustine’s Catholic School Narromine 8-4 in the year 3-4 final of the Richardson Trophy.

Narromine was coached by Brett Smith.

With a tenacious come-from-behind effort ,St Mary’s reigned supreme over Holy Family, a team coached by Brent Dennis.

They now advance to the state final NRL Legends day in Sydney to be staged on August 22.

Although it wasn’t all smooth sailing in the final trailing 8-0 after two quick tries to Holy Family through Tye Siakisoni and Ryan Campbell, it looked like the Bathurst school would come out on top.

But a double to Paddy Haycock saw St Mary’s claw their way back, squaring level at the break.

Then Kobi Wilson stamped his mark on the match crossing twice just after half-time to give his team a 16-8 lead.

Some determined St Mary’s defence kept Holy Family’s attacking raids at bay but they eventually struck. A bustling effort from Bryce Rue made it a four point ball game.

However, any hopes of a Holy Family resurgence were dashed when a Samuel Thompson-try sealed victory for St Mary’s.

Outstanding halfback Ben Blimka was man of the match for Calare. The clever playmaker bagged two tries and was brilliant all day.

Tournament co-ordinator and Western ARL development officer Mick Armstrong reflected on yet another successful tournament and forecast the emergence of some new household rugby league names.

“It was a great finish to the competitions. We had nine localised gala days involving almost 3000 primary students,” he said.

“Not too long ago there were players like Jack Wighton, Daniel Mortimer and Harry Siejka competing in this carnival.

“These players have now reached the NRL and I’m sure with the talent on display today we’ll see some kids follow in their footsteps.”

David Peachey and Russell Richardson were on hand for presentations along with injured Manly Sea Eagle Ben Farrar.
ENGLAND ACADEMY TOUR DATES CONFIRMED

The England Academy will travel to Australia for a challenging three-week tour on July 19 when the next generation of Super League stars play two warm-up games before taking on the Australian Schoolboys in a two-Test series.

The 24-man Academy squad will play New South Wales Under-18s on Wednesday July 25 at Narrabeen before taking on the best of Parramatta’s Juniors on Saturday July 28 at Parramatta.

The Academy youngsters will then face the Schoolboys on Sunday August 5 and Saturday August 11 with those games being played at Canberra and Wynnum-Manly respectively.

“The first week on tour is going to be very tough – there’s no escaping that,” said Elliott. “We’ll be basing ourselves at Narrabeen for preparation as the facilities there are first class and then we go into two tough games in short succession.

“We have purposefully set it up so that we test ourselves to the limit early on. I didn’t want to go into a Test week worried about picking up injuries from a mid-week game so we’ll get a good chance to test our game-plans early on and then we have a week to focus solely on the first Test.

“It will be a challenge for everyone but winning a test series isn’t easy and the staff and the players are under no illusions as to what it will take.”

LEAGUE WIN PLAYS IMPORTANT ROLE IN ASTLEY CUP TRIUMPH
Western Advocate

BATHURST High School took out a classic Astley Cup rugby league encounter 40 - 22 at Carrington Park yesterday on their way to a convincing 495-305 overall win against Dubbo High School.

It is an oft-repeated sentiment that the scoreline didn’t indicate the closeness of the game, but it was appropriate yesterday as the momentum see-sawed for the first 50 minutes of the 70-minute contest.

If ever there was a defining moment in a sporting contest though it came from Josh Small with 20 minutes to play.

After a break from one of their forwards, Dubbo looked absolutely certain to score through fullback Dan Thornton, who had earlier crossed for his side.

He gathered the ball on the burst 40 metres from the Bathurst line and set sail for the left corner.

From the other wing Small loomed and not only reached the would-be try-scorer, he somehow managed to bring him to ground and flip him without conceding a try.

But it wasn’t over there.

From the ensueing set, Bathurst shifted the ball early and ultimately Kurt Norton ended up scoring a stupendous try at the other end of the field, taking the score to 24 - 16 in his team’s favour when it looked certain they would trail 22 - 18.

It summed up the game in a nutshell – one team seemingly with all the momentum only for the other to break it with a brilliant try.

Dubbo were in control early but suffered a cruel blow when prop Dan Runciman was taken to hospital following a shoulder dislocation in the 10th minute.

Five minutes later though his absence was less distressing as Thornton pounced on a well-weighted kick to open his team’s account.

Trailing 4-0, Bathurst were spurred into action and hit back soon after thanks to a try from close range to Adrian Aveiro and from the very next set, Aveiro crossed again to make it 12 - 4.

From the next set again they looked likely to score only for a mistake to give Dubbo possession. Not long after the visitors crossed through DJ Gordon, again from a kick.

After leading 12 - 10 at the break, Bathurst lifted the intensity early in the second half and by this stage were clearly winning the forwards’ battle though Dubbo continued to chance their arm to get out of trouble.

Nick Loader scored a clever try from dummy-half to stretch the lead to eight points but again Dubbo hit back, this time through Jai Dunn. Once more the game was in the balance.

Small’s match-turning play though firmly set Bathurst on course for victory and they followed Norton’s try with further four-pointers to Loader and a double from Blake Lawson.

Both those players were deserving of praise along with the likes of prop Alex Carslake and Aveiro off the bench.

“We knew we had to play with a lot of intensity, Dubbo have always been a strong league team and we wanted to match them from the start,” Bathurst coach Des Crawford said.

“We knew that if we could get on top up the middle and play smartly, the one per-centers would take care of themselves and pay off.

“If your forwards lay a platform like ours did today it makes it so much easier for players wider out like Tom Siejka and Blake Lawson.”

The split of points from the game fell 65 - 35 in Bathurst’s favour, setting them up for the two soccer matches in the afternoon.

ST MARY’S WIN THE DAVID PEACHEY SHIELD
Dubbo's Daily LIBERAL

ST MARY’S Dubbo and Orange’s Calare Public dominated the David Peachey and Russell Richardson primary schools finals held in Dubbo yesterday.

Coached by Justin Yeo and led by man of the match Jono Davis, St Mary’s Catholic School defeated Holy Family School Kelso 20 - 12 to claim the Peachey Shield for year 5-6 teams; while a very good Calare outfit, coached by Darren Kead, eclipsed St Augustine’s Catholic School Narromine 8 - 4 in the year 3 - 4 final of the Richardson Trophy.

Narromine was coached by Brett Smith.

With a tenacious come-from-behind effort ,St Mary’s reigned supreme over Holy Family, a team coached by Brent Dennis.

They now advance to the state final NRL Legends day in Sydney to be staged on August 22.

Although it wasn’t all smooth sailing in the final trailing 8 - 0 after two quick tries to Holy Family through Tye Siakisoni and Ryan Campbell, it looked like the Bathurst school would come out on top.

FARRER MAKES CUP MOVE
Tamworths Northern Daily LEADER
FARRER Memorial Agricultural High School and Glen Innes High School will fly the region’s flag at the northern NSW finals of the Country Rugby League Cup later this month.

The regional finals were held in the under 13s and 15s in Tamworth yesterday and Farrer booked a place in both northern NSW finals by winning both their games.

In the under 13s, Farrer was far too strong for Narrabri and Inverell High Schools, winning both without conceding a try all day.

“You couldn’t ask for much better,” Farrer U13s coach Richard Ingram said.

“We kept our line intact, no tries.

“That’s a really good effort.

“It follows on from the Peel Schools where we got over Hunter (Sports High).”

Ingram is also the Group 4 U13s coach for this Sunday’s Country Cluster Championships and had a number of those rep players in his Farrer side.

That is an indication of its ability.

“It’s a big advantage to have the Group players there,” he said.

“It’s nice when you can have five of them on the bench watching.”

Farrer is lucky it has so many good players to choose from this year.

The under 13s play in two different teams on Saturdays in the Tamworth Minor League, with the best from each chosen to play for the Country Cup team.

“We split them up,” Ingram said.

“From today’s team there are eight and 10 so that’s a pretty even split.

“We’re coming second and third at the moment.

“West have been getting us pretty comfortably so far but we’re getting better.”

In the under 15s, Farrer and Glen Innes went head to head after they both defeated Gunnedah High.

Glen’s youngsters looked capable of pushing Farrer all the way but in the end the green and golds ran out 28-4 winners.

Glen High will represent the region at the northern NSW finals in the opens division though.

The opens regional final was played last week where Glen beat Armidale High to progress.

At Coffs Harbour the best teams in northern NSW will meet on July 24 and the winners will play the state finals at Bathurst in August.

Both games started close however the talented College 15s eventually ran out easy winners.

James Sheahan did similar qualifying after winning the Orange gala day defeating St Johns Dubbo, Stannies and Bathurst High School.

The Hills regrouped after the break and played some good footy with the forwards working hard for meters, the backs found room on the ground with the footy in hand, this resulted in 2 quick tries.

The momentum was swinging The Hills ways when Man of the Match Paulie Paulie smashed thru the defencive line at halfway to score a coach killer of a try to put the game too far away for the defending Champs to gain.

GIHS BOYS MOVE INTO FINAL 16 OF STATE

Glen Innes High School’s open rugby league side has advanced into the final 16 of the University Shield after yet another dominating performance.

The school’s Gifted and Talented Rugby League (GATRL) program is really paying dividends with the under 15s side also advancing to the next stage of the Country Cup.

The opens travelled to Tamworth on Wednesday to take on Coonabarabran at Scully Park.

The first 15 minutes was tightly contested, with Coonabarabran actually leading 6-4 at one stage.

But from then on Glen Innes started to complete their sets and Jay Gallagher launched an aerial raid on the Coonabarabran fullback with some massive torpedo bombs off his left boot.

Glen was able to capitalise on the fullback’s mistakes and jumped out to a 30-6 lead at half time.

Although Coonabarabran wasn’t done just yet. They scored a couple of quick tries to start the second half to get themselves back into the match.

Glen regained the momentum in the match mid way through the second half and stormed home to win 56-22.

Coach Richard Taylor said he was delighted with his side’s performance.

“We gathered ourselves well in the second half and were able to get on with it,” he said.

“Every player in the squad did their job.”

The ever-consistent Gallagher was man of the match on the day.

“His energy was just unreal,” Taylor said.

“He scored numerous tries carrying defenders over the try line and he got through a power of defence.”

Second-rower Wade Campbell picked up two best and fairest points for his efforts.

“It was his best game of the year,” Taylor said.

“His defence was very tough.”

Prop Damien Hamel was awarded the one best and fairest point for his efforts in the middle.

“He was really strong and made good ground,” Taylor said.

The side now awaits notification on who they play in the final 16 of the competition.

Meanwhile under 15s side travelled to Inverell on Thursday to take on a combined Inverell High School and McIntyre High School side.

They came away nine tries to nil winners, a fabulous effort considering it was against combined team coming from a town almost twice as big in population.

Forwards Braden Gallagher and Robbie Hamel shared man of the match honours, while Jacob Howard was given one best and fairest point.

The under 15s now play the winner of the southern region in the Country Cup regional finals.

The opens side travels to Tamworth again next week for their Country Cup matches against Peel High School, Armidale High School and Coonabarabran.

Taylor said he would like to sincerely thank Russell Meehan and the Services Club for their support and assisting with the travel of the school’s teams.
NT RUNS RIOT IN TITLES OPENER

THE Northern Territory jumped out of the blocks with a 64-0 demolition of South Australia on Day 1 of the national under-15 rugby league titles.

The young Titans showed their worth on their home track at Richardson Park with a performance that pleased coach Brett Holmes.

"We ran the ball hard and used it well, especially in the second half when I wanted some improvement in our completion rate," Holmes said.

"We did that and lifted our work rate defensively, which were good signs."

Second rower and Taminmin High School student Richard Munchow won the man of the match award with his three tries and strong running.

The Territory meets Victoria in a Round 2 game at 4.30pm today.

In the other Pool B game WA withstood a strong challenge from Victoria to run out narrow 16-12 winners. Traditional rugby league regions Queensland, NSW and the ACT make up Pool A.

FIVE Territory Titans earned selection for the Australian Affiliated States rugby league team's tour of Tonga later this year.

Fullback Trenton Smith, winger Matthew Johnson, lock Jesse Maclean, centre Michael Fairweather and prop Aaron Barnes make up the quintet named by national selectors after the Titans' second-place finish at the nationals in Adelaide last weekend.

Two other Titans, second-rower Louka Constantine and five-eighth Wayde Nibbs were named as shadow players for the tour.

ST GREG'S SHOWS FARRER HOW IT'S DONE

ST GREGORY’S Campbelltown, missing four or five of its topline players, showed Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School how to take its chances when the Sydney school side won its second-round GIO Schoolboys Cup match 18-8 at Farrer’s John Simpson Oval yesterday.

Farrer dominated possession and field position early on but had just a penalty goal from hooker Logan Harris to show for its efforts.

St Greg’s hit back to score three tries just before half-time and lead 14-2 at the break.

Farrer again had chances early in the second half, with centre Kyle Avery over once but unable to ground the ball and then winger Will Gooch bouncing the ball in the corner.

St Greg’s withstood that and added its own try from a dropped Farrer bomb to lead 18-2 before Avery crossed out wide with about two minutes left to make it 18-8.

Former Salford Reds star Lee Addison has been coach at St Greg’s for the past three years and, while he’s coped with an horrific injury toll that has sidelined five of his topliners, paid praise to the hard-working Farrer side.

His side plays in its “local comp” at home against tough opposition.

He said there was no difference in the ability and DNA of the two sides.

“They don’t play the intense football we do week in week out – that’s the only difference.

“It could have been a different game if Farrer score in the second half and make it 14-8 with a home crowd and big wind.”

St Greg’s, he said, had experienced a tough few months.

“We’ve had a massive injury toll,” he said.

“We had five of our topline players out and left three good boys at home this week.

“We’d lost our last five games too.”

After losing to Blacktown in the first round of this Schoolboys Cup, yesterday’s win was a morale-booster for his side while also showing the Farrer boys they must be almost perfect to compete against the big Sydney schools.

“We started well,” Farrer coach Damien Kenniff said.

“We just dropped off a couple of times in the first half and you can’t do that against these teams.

“At 14-2, had we scored we would have been right in it.

“It shows you have to play almost perfect football against these Sydney teams.”

Farrer plays Blacktown “next term” in its next game and will have to improve again.

“Blacktown gave St Greg’s a bit of a touch-up when they played them,” Kenniff said.

“So it won’t be easy.”

Best for Farrer were prop Ben Allen, wingers Will Gooch and Zac Leonard, centre Kyle Avery and twins Matt and John Brady.

Australian schoolboy lock Adam Elliott led the St Greg’s charge, scoring one try and having a hand in another.

Fullback Ben Hughes, halfback Christian Kagiassis and centre Harry Grove also excelled, along with both second-rowers.

Farrer winger Leonard had something to celebrate when he was named in the NSW Country Under 16 side, with fellow Group Under 16s Mitch Doring, Beau Parry and Callum Hayne.

They play Queensland Maroons in Toowoomba on July 7.

ROBINSON DESTINED TO TACKLE BIG DREAM

FROM the moment he stepped onto a rugby league field as a four-year-old playing with the Dubbo under 8s, Wagga boy Sharne Robinson seemed destined to tackle every obstacle in his way.

Fast forward 13 years, the curious boy looking to try his hand at football has blossomed into a NSW Country under 16s representative – but Robinson has battled all the way.

Education of proper nutrition, diet and exercise is drilled into young sports stars these days, but as a type one diabetic, Robinson knows better than anyone how important it is to stay healthy.

“I do take my hat off to him,” Sharne’s father Darren told The Daily Advertiser yesterday.

“He’s a type one diabetic but he’s done so well and he should be very proud of himself.

“He’s met a couple of NRL footballers with diabetes and that sort of stuff, it’s just shown him that he can still succeed as long as he’s focused and looks after himself.

“He’s very dedicated, but this is just a hurdle he has to overcome by training, looking after his diet and keeping his blood pumping.”

In good company with fellow type one diabetes sufferer and NRL star Brett Stewart, Sharne depends on daily insulin injections to stay alive.

But keeping his condition under control is just part of what it will take to succeed in his NRL dreams, getting his first big break with selection in the NSW Country 16s squad alongside fellow Wagga star Troy Barby.

After completing year 10 at Wagga High School at the end of last year, Sharne has taken up an administration traineeship and hopes to forge a career within the sports and recreation field.

A destructive centre with Southcity under 16s, Sharne will travel with Barby and the rest of the squad to take on QLD Country in Toowoomba in a fortnight under the watchful eyes of NRL scouts from all over the country.

“He’s got what it takes to elevate himself, for a young man he’s very committed to footy,” Darren said. “He wants to make the most of this opportunity.”

MATER DEI STEALS VICTORY

MATER Dei Catholic College centre Lachlan Harper was hailed a hero after snatching a late try to give the team a thrilling victory over St Francis College in the Riverina final of the Cochrane Cup in Wagga yesterday.

With the teams locked 10-all with two minutes to play, Harper burst over for the try that would send Mater Dei into the Cochrane Cup zone final next week.

Harper’s strike in the 38th minute, and Brad Cain’s subsequent conversion, clinched Mater Dei a 16-10 triumph over gallant St Francis.

Earlier, St Francis had led 10-6 at half-time before Elias McKenzie crossed for a try in the 34th minute to get Mater Dei level.

Coached by Steve Adams, Mater Dei scored three tries to two overpower St Francis in a frenetic finish.

Crain scored first for Mater Dei and booted the conversion to put the team ahead 6-0 after seven minutes.

St Francis, however, responded with a try to Jacob Headon-Doige five minutes later to reduce the leeway to 6-4 before grabbing the lead right on the stroke of half-time.

St Francis star Harry Leebs scored in the 20th minute and Seb Blackett landed the conversion to put the team up 10-6 at half-time.

As time wound down, St Francis held on, but McKenzie’s try in the 34th minute gave Mater Dei the momentum to overwhelm St Francis in the dying minutes.

Harper was later lauded as the dominant force for Mater Dei, but fullback Sam Bramich was also in great touch.

For Mater Dei, yesterday’s success has promoted the team into the under-14 year’s Cochrane Cup final against Dubbo’s St John’s College in Dubbo next week.

MARSDEN STATE HIGH SCHOOL OFF TO SUNCORP STADIUM

Marsden State High School will play their first televised match in several years this Friday 20th of June. It has been a long wait for the program with the last channel 9 match dating back to 2006 with the graduation year of Israel Folou, Chris Sandow and Antonio Winterstein and co.

The match is the South East QLD quarter final stage of the national GIO schoolboys cup. After ranking 4th in the elite under 18 Langer cup at the conclusion of the round matches, the boys will now meet 8th place outside qualifier Morayfield State High School.

The boys are quite excited for their big match at such an amazing venue such as Suncorp Stadium and opportunity to play in front of channel 9 cameras.

Coach Mr Joe O’Callaghan is very proud of the teams efforts to this point of the year, and is quite confident going into the match as long as the team is not complacent due to playing a qualifier ranked team.

Unfortunately two key players in centre Conor Carey and front rower Tyrone Pritchard will miss the match due to knee injuries, two players that O’Callaghan believes will be huge losses due to both their great form this year, but an amazing opportunity for the boys that come into the side.

The winner of this match will go on to play the side that progresses from the Keebra Park SHS vs Coombabah SHS in semi final action.

MARSDEN SHS READY FOR FINALS ACTION

All major Broncos cups competitions involving South East QLD schools has reached the finals stages for 2012 and all Marsden SHS sides are in good positions leading into the quarter finals and round of 16 stages.

In the Year 8 Renouf Shield, the Mr Deymion Spiros coached Marsden side has finished the normal rounds in the healthy spot of 3rd.

This matches them up against Ipswich school St Peter Clavier in the round of 16 knockout match. The last time the two sides met Marsden walked away with the win 40 -12, but they will not be taking SPC lightly in a finals match.

In Year 9 Hancock Cup action, Marsden SHS has finished up an honest 4th place in the middle of the pack as they look to back up their title win from last year.

Coach Mr Mark Tookey will now prepare his side to take on Palm Beach Currumbin in their round of 16 knockout match. In their normal round match, both teams played in a tight contest with Marsden eventually winning 30 -16.

A really strong season from our Marsden SHS side in the Year 10 Walters Cup competition has seen them finish the regular rounds in 2nd spot.

The school has had a great hold on this cup, winning it over the past two years, and coach Mr Grant Stephensen will make sure his side is ready to continue this title defence when they play their quarter final against Coombabah SHS early next term.

This game should be a cracker with Marsden winning their round match in a great 24-22 win.

At the conclusion of the premier under 18 Langer Cup competition, Marsden SHS finished up at rank 4th.

This has now set them up with a South East QLD Quarter final in the National GIO Schoolboys Cup. The boys will take on the 8th rank qualifier Morayfield SHS at Suncorp Stadium on Friday 22nd June.

The boys will be pumped for a big performance in front of Channel 9 cameras. The winner of this match will meet the winner of Keebra Park and Coombabah at the semi final stage.

ENGLAND ACADEMY SQUAD NAMED FOR AUSTRALIAN TOUR

The England Academy have named a 24-man squad for their summer tour of Australia, which will see the next generation of England stars take on New South Wales Under-18s and Parramatta Juniors before facing the Australian schoolboys in a two-Test series.

The Academy depart for Australia on July 19 and the 24-man squad features a host of players with Super League experience, including Bradford Bulls forward John Bateman who will captain the tourists.

The squad comprises six players from Wigan Warriors, five Leeds Rhinos, three players each from Bradford Bulls, St Helens and Warrington Wolves with two Huddersfield Giants and sole representatives from both Hull FC and Salford City Reds.

The side travel Down Under hoping to emulate the feats of the 2004 England Academy squad who, captained by James Graham, were the last England Academy team to defeat the Aussies on home territory.

Academy coach Dave Elliott is confident his squad can repeat that success.

“It has been very tough choosing the final 24 man squad,” said Elliott. “We’ve got a lot of talented players at this age group and there are a lot of disappointed players who have missed out on selection.

“For those that have made it into the squad, being able to represent your country on a tour in Australia is a fantastic honour. It’s a great opportunity and one that many players will never experience - so this is a special opportunity for this group.

“We are going there hoping to emulate the success of 2004 and win the series, so the pressure is on us to perform. The players have all said that they want to win - they’re all very determined to do the shirt proud.

“We are under no illusions as to how tough the challenge will be but we have some very exciting and talented young players in this squad and I’m confident that they’ll be able to deliver the results that we want.”

ENGLAND ACADEMY OUTGUN FRANCE

The England Academy came from behind early on to secure a 38-18 win over their French counterparts in a hard-fought battle at Odsal Stadium on Friday evening.

Things began badly for the home side as it was France who got off the mark first when Mickael Rouch profited from a lapse in defensive concentration to cross on the ten minute mark, with French captain Joan Guasch adding the extras.

It was a short lived lead however as England were quick to respond through full-back Lewis Tierney. A sumptuous break from winger Joe Burgess split the defence and the Wigan youngster showed great composure to draw in the last defender and play club-mate Tierney into open space 20 meters out.

Moments later England found themselves ahead when James Saltonstall cut back inside from close range to wrong foot the sliding French defence and give England a 10-6 lead.

That lead was further extended when scrumhalf Williams attacked the short side from just inside the 20 meter line. He showed a quick turn of pace to draw in two defenders and find Burgess who showed great awareness to slide over the line and evade the onrushing defence.

In the final action of the first half, man-of-the-match Ryan Hampshire scored a superb solo effort, accelerating through a hole in the French defence on the half-way line and out-sprinting the cover defence to score in the corner before adding the extras with a sublime touchline conversion making it 20-6.

The second half began as the first did, with France getting on the boards. Half-back Joris Bissiere showed excellent invention to play a reverse inside kick from 10 meters out which split the English defence and found full-back Ferret in space for an easy touchdown.

In a back and forth second half, England responded in style through Dominic Speakman. A powerful run from Luke Thompson broke the French line and hooker Speakman split the defence from dummy-half to cross under the posts.

Hakim Miloudi cut the deficit to just eight points with 15 minutes remaining when he found a gap in the defensive line but Jordan Baldwinson re-established the cushion for England when he powered over from close range 10 minutes from the end.

Moments later Luke Briscoe put the result beyond doubt when he added his name to the try-scorer list before Hampshire added another excellently struck conversion to make the final score 38-18

“I was really pleased with the performance tonight,” said Academy coach Dave Elliott after the game. “In atrocious conditions we went out and played some good attacking rugby and I was pleased to see the lads have a go.

“Defensively I think we have a lot to work to do but I think that will come with more time together. Offensively we were excellent tonight but we just need to work on the little areas that creep in defensively.”

Elliott will now turn his attention towards the Academy’s summer tour of Australia, when they will take on the Australian Schoolboys in a two-Test series, and he says he has a lot of tough calls to make ahead of naming his touring squad next week.

“Tonight’s game was all about preparation for the Tour Down Under and a few of the guys out there have cemented their place on the plane,” he said.

“A few have also given me a bit of a selection headache as they put in big performances to stake a claim.

“It’s going to be very tough for me to make the final selection for tour. We have a lot of very talented players in the group and not all of them can tour so I’m going to have some very hard decisions to make over the weekend.”

HUGH'S HEROES

CELEBRATING his first Mortimer Shield victory, St Joseph’s Primary School, Leeton captain Hugh Collins was overwhelmed to hold the historic trophy at Equex Centre yesterday.

Lifted onto the shoulders of his cheering teammates, the 12-year-old prodigy was overcome with pride as he waived the shield high above his head as the crowd gathered around in glee.

One of the standout talents of the tournament, the young halfback spoke of his excitement at claiming the 12-6 final over Young Public School yesterday.

“Oh I’m very excited, the boys just played so well together and I’m so proud of them,” he said.

“It was tough in the second half there, we had to defend a fair bit but we came through it.

“I’m definitely excited to go on to Sydney now and see what we can do, all the players played so well, so it’s going to be fun.”

Smiling from ear to ear, Collins was humbled to accept the shield from its namesake, Chris Mortimer, yesterday.

As soon as the final whistle was blown, Mortimer said he jumped on the phone to tell his brothers Peter and Steve the news.

“They couldn’t be here, but they wanted to know who won,” he said.

“We all just think it’s a huge honour to have this competition named after us.

“We played our football in the Riverina just like these kids, we’re very proud of this competition.”

ARM WRESTLE ENDS IN COMPREHENSIVE WIN

Bathurst High School might have been on the wrong end of a few results in the Astley Cup but their rugby league team did all they could to keep their school in the hunt with a 52-10 win over hosts Orange High yesterday afternoon.

The visitors came into the match knowing they were well behind in the pointscore and were conscious of doing their best to help the school. At half-time the score was just 10-4 in favour of Bathurst but in the second half, they began to gain the ascendency and piled on the tries.

“It was a pretty comprehensive win. It was a real arm wrestle in the first half but we just stuck to our guns and we found the gaps in the second half to get a decent win,” Bathurst coach Des Crawford said.

“We came in knowing that we were trailing by a lot [in the points] but we kept saying to the boys that if we were able to keep them to a low score, we would frustrate them and they would open up.

“That was basically what happened. About five minutes into the second half we began to get on top and the tries began to flow.”

The coach said it took his team a while to find their rhythm but once they did, Orange couldn’t keep up.

“It felt like we dominated the field position and all aspects but, it really didn’t show on the scoreboard. We had a bit of a reflection in the second half and we played more of a structured game which made the difference,” Crawford said.

“Blake Lawson was magnificent. All of the forwards laid the platform for the outside backs but Blake was a standout. Josh Small scored a couple of tries and Rhys Potter is a Year 10 student but he did extremely well and was rewarded with a try.”

The big challenge for the Bathurst league team will now be producing a similar result against Dubbo in a fortnight. Dubbo are renowned for their strength in league and Crawford said this year will be no different.

“It was a good hit and we know where we are at now. We know what we will have to do in our next tie against Dubbo,” he said.

“We had a hit out against Dubbo at a carnival earlier this year and we are expecting them to be very strong. They are a very physical side and they will look to dominate the forwards.

“The good thing is that we host the tie and that home ground advantage will certainly make a difference.”

ALL EYES ON PEEL SCHOOLS CARNIVAL AND COUNTRY PLATE FINALS
Tamworth's Northern Daily LEADER

THE 64TH Peel Schools Rugby League Football Carnival starts tomorrow, marking what will be another big day for junior rugby league in the region.

While entries are up in tomorrow’s Primary divisions of the Peel Schools Carnival, Group 4 and Group 19 Under 16 and 15 teams play NSW Country Championship Plate Finals in Wyong – the Wayne Griffiths-coached Group 4 Under 16s tackling Group 16 and the Mark Gallagher-coached Group 19 Under 15s playing a 9am Plate Final.

“We don’t know who we play yet,” Gallagher said of a side which was bussing it down to Wyong this morning.

“We’ll have a training run in the afternoon.”

He has had to make one change to the side which beat Group 4 in Forster to reach the Plate Final.

“Mitchell Willis has moved to Queensland so we’ve brought Brock Simpkins in,” Gallagher said.

Griffiths has an unchanged squad for his Country Plate Final, although he has a changed starting 13.

“We’ve got a good starting 13 – we’ve switched things around a little, and hopefully we can put Group 4 on the (Country) map by winning this Plate Final.

“It’sa very good team – we do have some great kids coming through.”

He said Werris Creek’s Beau Parry, one of four G4 players selected in the Northern Country Under 16s, would be a key man against Group 16 tomorrow.

“He was the player of the carnival at Forster by a mile,” Griffiths said.

“He’s extremely tough and left a lot of highly-credentialled young men behind him at Forster.”

Parry, Zack Leonard, Callan Hayne and Mitch Doring have all made the Northern Country team to play Southern in a Country Under 16 trial.

Meanwhile, three Tamworth schools warmed up for tomorrow’s Primary divisions of the Peel Schools Carnival with Wests Challenge Finals at Scully Park on Wednesday evening.

55 teams from 19 schools will contest tomorrow’s Primary divisions of thecarnival while another 47 teams from 15 schools have entered for next Wednesday’s Secondary divisions.

But on Wednesday, Hillvue Public School, Westdale Public School and St Edward’s Primary School contested Under 11 and Open Wests Challenge Finals.

Unfortunately for St Ed’s they lost both, going down 16-12 to Hillvue in the first final and then 22-8 to Westdale under the lights in the Open final.

Australian Rugby League national development manager Zac Russ said the standard of football in both finals was “awesome”.

“It was a fantastic finish to the competition,” Russ said.

“We had 12 teams all up in the two divisions (Under 10 and Open).

“The competition was originally started as a development competition and started so that kids who don’t normally get to play of a weekend can play with their schoolmates.

“This year we had heaps of girls playing too.

“Hillvue and Westdale both had a lot of girls.”

Russ said without the support of the West Tamworth Leagues Club the competition could not have been played and thanked the club for its great support.

STANNIES’ STARS NAMED IN NSW SCHOOLS TEAM

FIVE of St Stanislaus’ College’s brightest footballing prospects will get the chance to test themselves against some of the best rugby league talent on offer in the coming months after earning selection in the NSW Combined Independent Schools team.

Three players were picked for the CIS opens outfit while another two were selected in the under 15s version of the side.

Campbell Scott, Jack Grant and Luke Petrie made the senior squad while Matt Allen and Matt Brouff were included in the younger group.

Scott and Allen both play locally with St Pat’s while Grant and Petrie are both Orange-based and have played most of their junior league with CYMS.

Brouff is a Warren junior.

“Initially the boys all attended a trial day and from there squads of 30 were chosen for each age group,” Stannies rugby league co-ordinator Paul McDonald said.

“They attended a camp at Narrabeen and the groups were trimmed from 30 down to 20.

“The boys have shown a lot of talent, the two Orange boys have been part of the first XV for rugby and have been in the A sides for all their age groups as they’ve come through.

“The Bathurst pair both play locally and have always been a part of representative sides in the past so they know what it’s all about.”

The under 15s team will head to Darwin in a fortnight where they will clash with Combined Affiliated States and the ACT.

The opens will get their chance from July 8 in Port Macquarie against the same opposition.

From there, the winning team from their pool will go on to the semi-finals of the Australian Schoolboy Championships.

Already qualified for the final four are NSW Combined High Schools, NSW Combined Catholic Colleges and Queensland, who will play amongst themselves to decide rankings going into the semi-finals.

If the players do well enough they will have the opportunity to gain a spot in the Australian Schoolboys side.
MOREE WON'T BE FULL BOAR
Tamworth's Northern Daily LEADER
GROUP 4 Under 16s are ready for a NSW Country Championship Under 16 Plate Final in Wyong but Moree is far from ready for its Group 4 clash with West Lions at Scully Park today.

While the Wayne Griffiths-coached Under 16 side had a final training run at Scully Park yesterday morning, the same ground will host an under-strength Boars for their Group 4 stoush with West Lions in the afternoon.

On a day when the 64th Peel Schools Carnival dominates rugby league in the Northern Inland region, the Boars were travelling east to tackle unbeaten competition leaders West Lions with at least half a dozen missing from their first grade ranks, coach Todd Mitchell said.

“We have a team but we won’t be at full strength,” Mitchell said on Thursday night.

“We have at least half a dozen out.

“There are too many blokes still working on the cotton or on properties where they are just starting to plant wheat.

“That’s the way it goes for small country towns.

“We have a lot of blokes who work on properties and their jobs come first.

“Some cotton properties are still picking, which is crazy this time of the year and some are just starting to plant wheat.

“We’d have a good little side, a young one, if we could get them all together.

“But that’s just the way it is.

“Having two sides (Group 19 Moree Boomerangs also play out of the western town) doesn’t help but we’ll still send a good team.

“I’d been hoping to see if the Lions wanted to switch the games and play the third- round game over there and not here but I left it a little late.

“I suppose West are probably back at full strength too.”

Which is just about right.

While the Boars are struggling with availability, the unbeaten Lions have almost all their first grade stars back from injury.

Only Ben Crowley and young centre Mitch Dening remain out, Lions coach Tony La Chiusa said.

“We’re glad to have all our Group 4 reps back,” he said.

“We’re close to putting our full squad on the paddock.”

La Chiusa has also been mindful of overtaxing his rep players and almost been training two squads to try to keep the Group 4 representatives as fresh as possible.

While West Lions and Moree match up at Scully Park this afternoon, North Tamworth Bears are in Narrabri tackling the Blues at Collins Park today.

It’s a big charity day for the Blues too, with all proceeds from the day going to spina bifida research.

Tomorrow, Gunnedah hosts Wee Waa at Kitchener Park in the other clash.

In Wyong today, the Group 4 Under 16s play Group 16 in the NSW Country Championship Plate Final.

That game kicks off at 10.20am while the Group 19 side plays its Country Championship Final from 9am.

TAMWORTH PUBLIC REPELS ROSS HILL FIGHTBACK
Tamworth's Northern daily LEADER
TAMWORTH Public ended Ross Hill’s State PSSA Boys’ Rugby League Knockout hopes with an 18-14 win over the Inverell school at Ken Chillingworth Oval in Tamworth yesterday.

It was just the confidence boost the TPS boys wanted heading into this Saturday’s 64th Peel Schools Rugby League Football Carnival in Tamworth.

The home side had to withstand a grandstand finish from the visitors though as Ross Hill piled on two late tries.

“We came back well,” Ross Hill coach Preston Connors said after the match.

“We were a bit more determined in the second half – started to believe in ourselves.

“I think we were put off by the size of some of the Tamworth boys.

“Once we got going we were fine.”

Jack Stafford, Ethan Campbell, Brandyn Dunn and Will Mozzell all had good games for Ross Hill while TPS coach Kevin Squires had plenty of good players too.

Logan Griffiths, Nathan Watts, Dylan Clark, Beau Anderson and AJ Pretorious all impressed.

“Our defence was great today,” Squires said.

“They all did well.

“It was a tough game, a good game.

“Ross Hill is a good side and has a good reputation.

“They had some very handy, stepping players today.

“We were fit though.

“We’ve had plenty of league time of late.

“We’ve got some good North West reps and we’ve had the Wests Challenge (midweek junior league competition at Scully Park) as well.”

While TPS is also preparing for this Saturday’s primary section of the Peel Schools Carnival, Ross Hill won’t be there.

“It’s a competition we’ve never really played in,” Connors said of a giant schoolboy rugby league competition which is about to stage its 64th carnival in Tamworth this

Saturday.

“We’d like to but we have a lot of the boys playing other sports on the weekend.”

GROUP 11 SEEING DOUBLE - TWICE

IT IS a rare sight to see one set of twins in a football side but Group 11’s under-16s set the bar to a new height last weekend when it fielded two sets of identical brothers in its southern zone-winning squad.

South Dubbo pair Craig and Thomas Field lined up alongside St John’s duo Jesse and Mitchell Ott in the run-on side and helped the home group to a 22-16 win over Group 9 in the final at Apex Oval.

To the naked eye it appeared as though there was one ultra hard-working forward on the field but for those in the know it was simply the Field brothers doing what they do.

Craig played in the front row while Thomas, who has basically the same build, slotted into the back row and both boys did a huge amount of hard work in the trying conditions.

Similarly the Otts also play in separate, but not too different positions, with Jesse in the centres and Mitchell outside him on the wing.

Jesse scored what turned out to be the crucial try of the match when he burst though the Group 9 defensive line in the centre of the field before outsprinting the chasers to touch down under the posts.

The try and subsequent conversion gave Group 11 a 12-point lead which proved to be unassailable despite the best efforts of the southern visitors.

At the conclusion of the carnival both Craig and Thomas Field were selected in the Southern Country representative side which will take on Northern Country in Wyong next weekend.
KELLY PICKED IN NSW REP TEAM

ST Paul’s College continues to be a top breeding ground for rugby league talent.

The former alma mater of Bulldogs star Aiden Tolman and ex-Cronulla Shark Albert Kelly can now boast another representative star.

Keeden Kelly (pictured), the cousin of Albert Kelly, has just been selected in the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) under 15s side to contest the national championships in Darwin next month.

Kelly starred for the Northern CCC side at the State selection trials in St Marys last weekend.

The agile centre was named best in ground despite losing to the Metropolitan side in the competition final.

Keeden’s grandfather Lewis said the youngster would now be pushing for a spot in the Australian Schoolboys merit side.

“If he plays well in Darwin, who knows,” he said.

“That’s the path Albert took before he ended up playing Australian Schoolboys.”

Larger than his cousin, Keeden has been playing league since he was seven.

Currently a Smithtown Tigers junior, he has already received interest from several NRL clubs.

“I had the manager of the Northern CCC side come up to me after the carnival and say to me ‘Keeden doesn’t know how good he could be’,” Lewis said.

“He’s been approached by South Sydney, the Bulldogs, Knights and Tigers but hasn’t signed anything yet.

“One of the things we often talk about at home is completing his education.

“Keeden’s very keen to stay at St Paul’s and a couple of the clubs we’ve talked to are supportive of that.”

TWO'S COMPANY FOR ST MARY'S

ORANGE’S St Mary’s Primary School will send two teams to the Western David Peachey Shield and Richardson Cup day next month.

The Orange rugby league competition was held yesterday at Brendon Sturgeon Oval with almost 30 teams lining up.

In the David Peachey Shield, for players in years 5 and 6, Calare took out the Orange title when they downed St Mary’s Blue 20-8.

However, in the Richardson Cup, for players in years 3 and 4, St Mary’s claimed victory with the Blue team downing Bletchington Red 24-12.

The four sides have qualified for the Western final day to be held in Dubbo on June 27.

Australian Rugby League national development officer Mick Armstrong said the Orange competition was strong.

“It was a good standard. There was a lot of good footy played,” Armstrong said.

“The semis were close and I think the two best teams went through to the final.”

The Western final will bring together teams from the nine divisional days held around the region.

Armstrong said it was hard to tell which teams would be strong at the Western final day.

St Mary’s and Bletchington could be in with a chance in the David Peachey Shield as the same teams were top contenders when they played in the Richardson Cup a few years ago.
KEEBRA DOWN PBC TO TAKE POLE POSITION

Keebra Park SHS have secured top spot on the ladder as the GIO National Schoolboy Cup moves into the knockout stages.

Facing arch rivals PBC the game once again went down to the wire with Keebra running out winners 20-18.

These games are rarely indicative of the playing capabilities of either side with the crowd input and rivallry often taking over.

Keebra were far more polished but failed to build momentum while PBC relied on opportunistic play and scrambling defence to keep themselves in the game.

The battle of the forward packs was convincingly won by Keebra while PBC proved a handful out wide. The results sees Keebra and PBC positioned one and two on the ladder and the two may not meet again unless they both qualify for the QLD Final.

In other games Keebra seconds downed Harristown from Toowoomba and the PBC Under 15's edged out Keebra.

Two regional qualifiers will make up the top 8 in the National Competition with the knock out rounds scheduled for the first week in term 3. LEARN MORE KEEBRA PARK RUGBY LEAGUE

WEST HOXTON SCHOOLBOY IS IN A LEAGUE OF HIS OWN
Liverpool City CHAMPION

NEW Zealand's future rugby league teams may have another elite talent like Benji Marshall in their midst.

And he lives right in the heart of Liverpool.

West Hoxton's Josh Petero, was born in Kaitaia, New Zealand. The teenager said he was proud of his Maori heritage.

The 17-year-old also has close links with Marshall, the Wests Tigers and New Zealand rugby league skipper, and one of the NRL's best players.

"My dad's uncle and aunty helped raise Benji when he was a young boy growing up in New Zealand before he came to Australia," Josh said.

"I have met him a few times and he is a really good person.

"But while Benji plays for the Tigers I am a mad keen Warriors fan."

The year 12 student at John Edmondson High School at Horningsea Park, is proving an incredible talent in rugby league, rugby union, Oztag and touch football at representative level.

Josh said it was hard for him to decide to specialise in just one sporting code.

"I like playing all four sports and I manage to fit them in during the week," he said.

"I get to have a rest from all sports on Saturdays as I play rugby league with Arncliffe Scots under-19s team in the St George juniors competition on Sundays."

He plays halfback in rugby league and closely studies Marshall in NRL games. New Zealand Warriors No.7 Shaun Johnson was another he admires.

John Edmondson High School head physical education teacher Graeme Bond said Josh excelled at all his chosen sports and has represented the school at district, regional and Combined High School levels.

"Josh is a very talented person," Bond said.

"He also has a very good attitude towards his training and playing.

"Josh also does well academically and is doing the Higher School Certificate this year."

STATE SPOT A ‘DUNN’ DEAL

DUBBO Macquarie under-18s coach Greg Edwards has backed halfback Swade Dunn to perform when he represents NSW in next month’s Australian Schoolboys Championships.

Dunn was one of just two players picked from outside the metropolitan area for the side after representing Western in the NSW CHS selection trials at Toronto over the weekend.

The accolade is one of a long list of career highlights for Dunn which also include, among others, being a member of: the 2010 NSW Indigenous team; the 2010, 2011 Australian Indigenous team; the Canterbury Bulldogs development squad and; the 2011 NSW Schoolboys rugby union team.

Western lost two of its three matches but Dunn, a two-time premiership winner with St Gregory’s College and a Group 9 premiership winner with Wagga Brothers, caught the eye of selectors to be picked in a side made up predominantly of players from sports high schools.

“To me he is the complete footballer,” Edwards said.

“Swade has a good kicking game, he organises the players well and he is good in defence.

“I honestly can’t remember the last player from Dubbo to be picked for the NSW Schoolboys side so we are really proud of what he has achieved.”

The Raiders missed Dunn during their 28-18 loss against Parkes on Sunday and while it isn’t ideal to have your playmaker away, Edwards said he enjoyed seeing players make representative sides.

As well as it being good for them individually, he believes it will also help the Raiders in a planned run to the semi-finals

“When kids go away to carnivals like this and they are training and playing at that higher level, they generally come back better and will bring things back to benefit their clubs,” Edwards said.

“Coming back to Group 11 the football won’t be as strong for him but hopefully we will pass on some of the things he learns and we can use those.”

Dunn got a taste of first grade with Macquarie earlier this year when he put captain-coach Jade Williams over for the match-winning try against Narromine in a remarkable game of rugby league.

But how he ended up with the Raiders is an even better story, as explained by his dad Robbie Dunn.

“Swade came back to Dubbo to finish his schooling and to play with one of the two Dubbo clubs,” Robbie said.

“He picked Macquarie because his cousin Lai was playing with them and their nan didn’t want to the two boys playing against each other.”
FARRER HAS A MOUNTAIN TO CLIMB AGAINST HILLS
Story By :
FARRER steps up to the rugby league big time at Brookvale Oval today and couldn’t have drawn a tougher GIO Schoolboys Cup debut assignment than the best team in the country.

The Tamworth school has joined the powerhouses of schoolboy league in the elite Tier 1 competition this season and will tackle Hills Sports High as the curtain-raiser to tonight’s Manly v St George NRL clash.

It will be a huge first-up challenge for the Damian Kenniff-coached side, with Hills Sports having taken out the competition the past two years, and Kenniff said they were under no illusions about how tough it was going to be today and for the remainder of the competition.

“In our pool we’ve got Hills Sports High, who have won it the last two years, St Gregory’s Campbelltown who have won probably the most titles and Patrician Brothers Blacktown, who had eight in the NSW CHS team,” Kenniff said.

Hills Sports had two.

“It’s a huge challenge but it’ll be really good for the guys,” he said.

It can only be a good thing for them and their careers, he said.

“If they want to play NRL, the exposure they’ll get and the challenge will be good for them,” Kenniff said.

He was relieved that their contingent involved in this week’s State CHS Carnival came through the three days unscathed.

They had five playing for Greater Western – Brad Cappello, Zack Leonard, John Brady, Ben Allen and Logan Harris.

Kenniff’s message to his side will be simple and reflects their attitude to the challenge.

“Enjoy every minute, work hard and not to be intimidated,” he said.

“If we play our best, in a two-horse race anything can happen.”

They have so far played St Gregs in a pre-season trial, and Glen Innes and Coonabarabran High in the University Shield, and from that Kenniff has been particularly impressed with how the forwards have performed.

“We’ve got a good forward pack that will not take a backward step,” he said.

“And we’ve got some young guys who are keen.”

He said Harris would lead them well from hooker with prop Ben Allen to lead them out.

“We go in prepared to have a good hot go,” Kenniff said.

FARRER 1ST XIII: 1 Will Gooch (Tamworth), 2 Zack Leonard (Werris Creek), 3 Brad Cappello (Canberra), 4 Dylan Manicaros (Manilla), 5 Callum Hayne (Gunnedah), 6 John Brady (Gunnedah), 7 Jacob Booby (Narrabri), 8 Ben Allen (Cabargo, capt), 9 Logan Harris (Blackville), 10 John Purshe (Tamworth), 11 Kyle Avery (Tamworth), 12 Liam Zell (Tamworth), 13 Alexander Smith (Dungowan), 14 Jack Cocking (Manilla), 15 Tremayne Sanbrook (Tamworth), 16 Tyler Fleming (Gunnedah), 17 Ian Brown (Tamworth). Reserves - Luke Houghton (Pilliga), Trent Eather (Boggabri), Tom Caldwell (Forbes). Coach - Damian Kenniff (Maules Creek).
GREATER WESTERN CHALLENGE PETERS OUT
Story By :
THE region’s league players missed out on the scoreboard and the selection table when the State 15s and U18s CHS rugby league titles concluded at Toronto yesterday.

Sydney Red was too strong for both Greater Western sides, winning the 15s 34-4 and opens 36-4 after a first-half onslaught.

They piled on 30 points in the first half before Greater Western rallied to restrict them to just a try in the second half.

Farrer’s Brad Capello was among the best for the Tim Polson-managed side along with Western Canabolas High’s Harry Muller, Denison Bathurst’s Blake Lawson and Dubbo Senior College’s Swade Dunn.

Dunn also caught selectors’ eyes and was the only Greater Western player selected in the CHS side – either U18s or U15s.

The U18s will compete at the Australian Championships in Port Macquarie and the 15s in Darwin.

The Greater Western 15s result was a pretty good effort, manager Tim Vaughan said.

“Sydney Red won every game and was fairly dominant through the week,” Vaughan said.

“As far as effort goes it was probably our best effort of the three games.”

He said they were in the match for a lot of the game.

“They scored quick tries in short periods of time,” he said.

“We went from a four-point deficit to 14-point deficit in the space of a couple of minutes.”

Farrer’s Zac Faulkner was strong all three games in the front row, he said, while Peel’s Josh Moncaster played solidly on the wing.

He provided one of the highlights of the week with his 100m intercept try against Northern on Tuesday.

Captain Cory Manicaros (Farrer) also led well.
GREATER WESTERN TURNS FORM AROUND
Story By :
GREATER Western had a much better day at the State CHS Rugby League Trials in Toronto yesterday when their Under 18s won and the Under 15s lost on the bell.

Down 12-nil, the Greater Western 15s fought their way back to 16-all before Northern scored on the bell for a 20-16 victory.

It was a cruel way to lose, manager Tim Vaughan said.

“They did well to come back from 12-nil down,” Vaughan said.

“We were very pleased with their effort though, a marked improvement on the previous day (34-8 losers to Southern) in all aspects of the game.

“It gives us something to build on for tomorrow’s match against Sydney Red.

“That will be a tough game.”

Yesterday, Farrer’s Zac Alexander was a standout.

“He was probably the best player on the field,” Vaughan said of the young prop.

“Corey Manicaros (Farrer) had another big game too and Josh Moncaster (Peel) scored a 100m intercept try and was good in general play.”

While the 15s lost on the bell, the Tim Polson-managed Opens were convincing winners, beating Northern 28-10.

That was despite an early 6-nil deficit.

“That was against the run of play and a shonky decision as well,” Polson said.

“John Brady and Logan Harris (both Farrer) were outstanding, Harrison Muller (Canobolas) and Swade Dunn (Dubbo Senior College) also great but all the boys were good today.

“It was a nice turnaround from the loss.”

He said Greater Western had been “notorious slow starters” but that’s mainly because of the lack of time the players from the North West and Western regions have together preparing.

“Hopefully the boys can go to the next step against Sydney Red tomorrow,” Polson said.

“They (Sydney Red) are quite tough but anything can happen with a bit of self-belief and a good win today.”

He also thought Coonabarabran’s Dylan Brand deserved special mention.

“We’re a winger short and Dylan is normally a backrower playing on the wing.

“He had an excellent game there today.”
FUTURE STARS VYING FOR COUNTRY TITLE
Story By
GROUP 11 under-16s hope to take their trial-winning form into this weekend’s Country Championships being played at Dubbo’s Apex Oval.

The cream of emerging players from southern area Country Rugby League in the 15s and 16s from Groups 6, 9, 10, 11, 14, 16, 20 and Illawarra will all be vying for a Country title.

The boys will also have an opportunity to take a positive step in their budding careers. An under-16s Southern side will be selected to trial against a Northern outfit for a Country guernsey and talent scouts will also be on hand looking to unearth a future NRL star.

Action gets under way from 10am Saturday with hosts Group 11 meeting their south coast rivals Group 16 in the first under-16s clash at 10am; while Group 11 15s play Group 14 at noon.

Neil Millgate, the Dubbo association president and junior coach, said Group 11 under-16s are a good side.

“As under-15s last year they upset carnival favourites Illawarra but lost their way against Group 6 and just didn’t have enough legs left. They poured so much energy into the game against Illawarra they were spent. But I think our coach, Cameron Greenhalgh, will have learnt a lot from that and will have them primed to go the extra step this time.”

Forbes-based Greenhalgh has had most of these boys since under-13s and hopefully he can get the best out of them.

They were too good for Group 10 in a recent trial and have looked sharp in the gruelling training runs.

“One of the our strengths is that they work with each other and we also have a number of club mates, so that helps in these rep games,” Millgate said.

Interestingly there are two sets of twins in the side - Jesse and Mitchell Ott - who will play in the centres and on the wing; while the Fields boys from Warren - Craig and Tom - play their club football with South Dubbo and are in the back row of the scrum.

Millgate suggested the Group 11 under-15s were an ‘unpredictable’ side that could be very good on the day.

“It will be interesting to see how they go the 15s. They didn’t play well for coach Mark Hartwig (Forbes) in the trial so will have to do better to make an impact at this level on the weekend,” Millgate said.

Three of the key players will be outstanding prop Jake Hall - the nephew of former Dubbo Westside, South Sydney Rabbitohs and Australian prop, Les Davidson - and his back row partners Connor Brebner (Grenfell) and Jayden Merritt (South Dubbo).

Group 11 under-16s:

1 William Day (South Dubbo), 2 Jarrod Nicholson (Forbes), 3 Josh Trayhum (Canowindra), 4 Jesse Ott (St John’s), 5 Mitchell Ott (St John’s), 7 Nicholas Greenhalgh (Forbes), 8 Chris Judd (Red Bend), 9 Hayden Bolam (Forbes), 10 Craig Field (South Dubbo), 11 Thomas Field (South Dubbo), 12 Alex Wilson (Canowindra), 13 Joe Stageman (South Dubbo). Interchange: 14 Ken Knight Jnr (South Dubbo), 15 Rodney Boney (Dubbo PCYC), 16 Ben Maguire (Red Bend), 17 Hewett Haycock (St John’s). Coach: Cameron Greenhalgh (Forbes). Manager: Sue Egan. Trainers: Collin Dwyer, Shane Bolam, Vicki Everingham.

Group 11 under-15s:

1 Gabe Chapman (St John’s), 2 Daniel Harveyson (Grenfell), 3 Alex Davis (Condobolin), 4 Jacob Scott (St John’s), 5 Hayden Sambrook (Souths), 7 Lewis Goodsell (Condobolin), 8 Jake Hall (St John’s), 9 Cody Bruce (Eastridge), 10 Joseph Todd (Souths), 11 Phillip Combridge (Souths), 12 Connor Brebner (Grenfell), 13 Jayden Merritt (Souths). Interchange: 14 Benjamin Conroy (St John’s), 15 Steven Cole (St John’s), 16 Jordan Howarth (Red Bend), 18 Will Dukes (Forbes). Coach: Mark Hartwig (Forbes). Manager: Lisa Combridge. Trainers: Paul Brandon, Scott Burns, Jeff Charlton.
TITANS CUP FINAL…. AN ALL KEEBRA AFFAIR

It will be mate against mate next Monday as the Keebra Park Open 3rds and the Keebra Park under 16’s go head to head in the Titans Cup final.

The Open thirds dispatched Palm Beach Currumbin 40-6 in their semi- final while the Under 16’s had a good win over Marymount 20-14.

The win was a particularly good one from the 16’s who are often playing against more senior players and rely on good structure rather than size to get over their opposition and this is testament to the hard yards they put it at training with Mr Gould.

The boys have played each other twice this year with the honours split so the game should be a cracker.

The game will be played at Nerang Junior Leagues with kick off at 6pm. The final of the Challenge Cup will kick of at 5pm so there will be plenty of football.

In other games this week the Keebra Open A’s will take on Coombabah at Runaway Bay in the second last game of the Langer Trophy. These games seed the Opens for the knockout stages of the National Schoolboy Cup and as such are very important so once again get down and support the boys.

In other news it was good to see Old Boy Tau Tau Moga playing NRL for the Roosters and the Tigers Toyota Cup squad going well in the Under 20 competition.

Following on from the recent Qld rugby league schoolboys Under 18 state Championships the school is pleased to announce the inclusion of Jai Arrow and Jack Goodsall in the QLD side. These boys will head to Port Maquarie to contest the National Championships in July.

Finally well done to Braydon Mcmahon and George Fai who played well in the Qld versus NSW Under 16 curtain raiser to the recent first State of Origin game.

Well done all boys and the coaching staff involved.

EMERGING STARS ON SHOW AT GALA

THE changing face of rugby league in Wagga was showcased at a Mortimer Shield gala day in the city yesterday.

For the first time in years, Kooringal Public School and St Joseph’s Primary School made a stylish impact at the Mortimer Shield carnival at Parramore Park.

ARL National Development Riverina officer Dean Whymark later described Kooringal Public and St Joseph’s Primary as “emerging” rugby league schools in Wagga.

Whymark said teams from both schools had qualified for the Wagga round of the Mortimer Shield semi-finals next Wednesday, marking a new era for the competition.

“It was nice to see a few emerging schools make it,” Whymark said.

“Kooringal and St Joseph’s did well in the boys section, and there were the usual high performers like South Wagga Public and Ashmont Public in the girls division.

“South Wagga and Ashmont have been to the finals in the past.”

Whymark said school teams from Tumut and Albury would also play at the Wagga gala day on Wednesday.

“All the winners from today (yesterday) will go on,” Whymark said.

“The boys’ teams are Kooringal Public, Henschke Primary, St Joseph’s Primary, Holy Trinity and Lake Albert.

“In the girls it was South Wagga, St Joseph’s, Kooringal Public, Wagga Public and Ashmont Public.”

The Mortimer Shield involves primary school teams from across the Riverina, with the boys playing rugby league and the girls competing in Leaguetag.

The Wagga carnival yesterday followed similar events at Griffith, Temora and Leeton, while the Tumut carnival will be played tomorrow.

Whymark said semi-final rounds would also be played at Griffith on Tuesday and Cootamundra on Thursday week.

“The teams that qualify from the various venues will play on grand final day in Wagga on June 14,” Whymark said.

Named to honour the fabulous Mortimer brothers from Wagga, the Mortimer Shield has grown in status and strength to be a highly prized competition on the school sporting calendar.

MARSDEN SHS KICKS OFF 2012 WHERE THEY FINISHED OFF LAST YEAR
Marsden State High School Excellence in Rugby League program has had a great start to the year after their record making 2011.

Last year witnessed the school win two South East QLD Broncos Cups in the Year 8 and 10 division aswell as their national schoolboys cup side going down by 8 to PBC SHS in the South East QLD Semi final, a great effort considering that their opposition went on to win the QLD title.

Off the field this year program coordinator Mr Grant Stephensen and his staff have proudly watched as recent graduates have moved on into NRL environments including Jarrod Teo (Titans NYC), Caleb Timu (Broncos NYC), Codey Kennedy (Roosters SG Ball), Patrick Mago and Brenko Lee ( Raiders SG Ball) and Costner Lemafa (Bulldogs SG Ball).

Watching Caleb Timu represent QLD in the inaugural Under 20 State of Origin game was also excellent news, which has also now been backed up highlights including a QLD U/16 Origin jersey for current student Tarahawaiki Kaumoana and QLD U/18 Schoolboys Rep Conor Carey (both pictured).

We also had a great effort from the QLD U/15 state trials coming back with two Queensland Maroon jerseys in Calvin Pritchard and Jaydn Sua (also player of the carnival) and two Queensland White jerseys in Aaron Uele and Moses Kele. Not to mention 5 of our current senior squad playing a part in the national champions Souths Logan U/16 side.

On the field has been a solid start to 2012 with our Year 8 and 9 sides only tasting defeat once to this point of the season and our Year 10 side currently undefeated as we chase our third consecutive Year 10 Walters Cup title.

In national schoolboys cup action (side pictured), coach Mr Joe O’Callaghan is pleased with his sides efforts so far after a tough 24 all draw against PBC, 12 -0 loss to Keebra Park and strong 50 point win over Coombabah SHS.

The boys still have a very tough road in front of them but hope to progress past the SEQ Semi Final stage this year which we have finished our season at over the past two years.

Keep watching this space with more updates as we come into the finals stages of all competitions. If anyone would like further information on our program please do not hesitate to contact program coordinator Mr Grant Stephensen on 32 99 0535 or check out our website below:

SOUTHS LOGAN WIN NATIONAL FINAL

A POWERFUL performance from the Souths Logan forwards helped them claim the 2012 National Under 16 Junior Representative title over Parramatta at Langlands Park yesterday.

Skipper George Fai and fellow Queensland Under 16 representative Tarahawaiki Kaumoana both bagged doubles in the dominant display from the Magpies.

In glorious but warm conditions for football; it was Eels fullback Dillon Khoury who posted the opening points of the match in the 10th minute.

However, the Magpies returned serve almost straight after when Fai barged over for the first points for his team and it only took a few minutes before Souths were in again, this time thanks to Simione Fatafehi.

As halftime approached, good defensive pressure from the Magpies dislodged the ball from an attacking Parramatta and Kaumoana was able to run past the Eels defenders to post a 16-6 lead.

With just over a minute to go in the half, the Eels responded when they shifted the ball to their left-hand side to exploit a lack of Souths Logan defenders and Atini Gafa crossed to narrow the gap to 16-10.

While Parramatta’s spirits may have been high when they returned for the second half, Souths were quick to re-establish their dominance, with Fai snaring his second try of the afternoon after halfback Lachlan Lewis bamboozled the defence to launch himself on a massive run downfield.

However, the Eels showed there was still plenty of intrigue left in the game and Jermaine Mati-Leifi’s four-pointer soon after kept them within reach.

But further tries to Kaumoana and Riva Pati put the result beyond doubt for the Queensland side, with the team doing just enough to hold out a late fight back from the NSW champions to take the title.

FARRER STAMPS DOMINANCE WITH CRUSHING WIN
northern daily leader - rugby league

FARRER Memorial Agricultural High School highlighted its dominance in local open schoolboy football yet again yesterday with a 74 - 4 hiding of Glen Innes High School in the first round of the University Shield.

Glen fought on for the full 70 minutes but struggled to even get hold of the ball at Farrer’s Simpson Oval.

The green and golds began the scoring in the very first set of six when Zander Smith crossed.

Further tries to Jacob Booby, Brad Cappello, Ben Allen, Matt Brady and Will Gooch took the lead to 34-nil before Glen centre Dean Swaffer scopped up a loose ball and ran away to score his side’s only points.

It was just a temporary blip for Farrer though, with Dylan Manicaros scoring before the break to make it 40 - 4.

After halftime, Gooch grabbed his double, as did Booby while Zach Leonard scored twice in the second half and Smith added two more to take his tally to three for the match.

Despite the scoreline, Farrer coach Damian Kenniff said the visitors provided a good test for his team.

“Every time we play Glen Innes they turn up,” Kenniff said.

“They have a good rugby league program and Jay Gallagher was outstanding.

“If we could play Glen Innes every week we would, because they push us.

“Last year we beat them 20 - 6 so we prepared for a tough game, and we got one.”

Greater Northern backrower Gallagher tried his best and, with ball in hand, the Glen boys completed their sets well.

They just didn’t have much ball.

“It’s our first game of the year so we were using it as a trial game,” Glen coach Richard Taylor said.

“We have to play the other games in our pool now and those games should be more of an even playing field.

“I’m happy enough with the boys and we’ve got the hardest game out of the way now.”

Taylor said that in addition to Gallagher, Damien Hamel and fullback Brent Pedlow showed some ability.

Glen will now face the likes of Coonabarabran, Duval and Inverell High Schools and will also focus on the Country Cup where it has particularly high hopes in its under 15s, which beat Farrer last year.

The opens will also play in the Country Cup and will take a lot from yesterday’s game.

“I’m proud of the fact that we’re a home-grown side,” Taylor said.

“They had an athletics carnival two days ago and some of them played soccer at school yesterday.

“We’re just fulfilling our responsibilities.”

Kenniff nominated a few players for extra praise but the green and golds were slick across the park.

“The players felt that Josh Pursche was their best,” he said.

“He played well.

“Callum Hayne is only young – he played on the wing and then moved to hooker – and he was good.

“Dylan Manicaros was good too.”

Farrer will also meet Inverell, Coonabarabran and Warialda in the near future.

CHECK OUT THE GRAND FINAL ACTION
ZAROUNAS STARS AS BALMAIN CLINCH NATIONAL TITLE

Backup halfback Alex Zarounas was named in jersey number 19 for the SG Ball Grand Final last weekend at St Marys Leagues Stadium. Fast forward a week and he has just collected a Man of the Match award and lead his Balmain Tigers team to a 38-18 victory against Townsville in the National Under 18 Grand Final.

The Tigers were missing Grand Final winning halves Mitchell Moses and Mark Daoud as well as hooker Mania Cherrington and barnstorming second-rower Daniel Rakvin for this match and many expected them to struggle.

However the makeshift halves pairing of Zarounas and Farrell excelled at Langlands Park and guided their side to victory against all the odds.

The Tigers blitzed the Stingers in a 10 minute period which saw them take a 28-10 lead at the 50th minute mark. The Stingers fought gallantly late in the game with tries to wingers Vall Holmes and Rainer Power but the delpeted Tigers side proved too strong in the end.

The Tigers took a while to find their feet without Moses and Daoud but just like the first game of the afternoon, once the teams found their feet, the game started to flow.

Zarounas opened the scoring with the first of his two tries in the 20th minute when he planted the ball down just to the left of the posts. Five minutes later the Stingers had their first through their Captain Hayden Crowley. Crowley sprinted 80 metres from the scrum and ran 80m untouched to score under the posts.

Just like the Under 16's game, the NSW side scored just on the bell. This time it was Mason Farrell who planted the ball down outwide to give the Tigers a 12-6 half time lead.

The Stingers never really threatened the Tigers in the second half and the win cemented them as the best Under 18's team in the country.

BALMAIN TIGERS 38 (A Zarounas 3, M Dimarco, M Farrell, N Milone, M Li tries; M Farrell 5 goals) def. TOWNSVILLE STINGERS 18 (R Power, H Crowley, V Holmes, D Clarke tries; C Jensen goal)
SOUTHS LOGAN DOWN EELS IN NATIONAL U16 FINAL

The Mark Tookey coached Souths Logan Magpies have taken out the National Under 16 Junior Representative Final with a 32-24 win over the Parramatta Eels at Langlands Park in Brisbane.

Queenland Under 16 representatives George Fai and Tarahawaiki Kaumoana were instrumental for the Magpies. Both bagged doubles and were extremely physical in defense against and equally dominant Parramatta Eels forward pack.

Three tries in quick succession to the Magpies in the second half blew the score out to 32-14 in the 47th minute but quick tries to Mark Griffiths and Jermaine Mati-Lefi had the score back to 32-24 with a few minutes remaing.

Souths Logan did what they had been doing all day however and muscled up in defense and forced a turnover from the Eels and closed out the game accordingly.

Both sides started the game tentatively before Eels fullback Dillon Khoury broke the deadlock in the 10th minute when he jinked back inside from a backline movement to score just to the right of the posts.

Man of the Match and Magpies Captain, George Fai, answered back almost immediately for the home side when he barged over for one of his two tries. Just four minutes later, Souths Logan were in again through their centre Simione Fatafehi who slipped through some soft Eels defense.

Tarahawaiki Kaumoana then made the score 16-6 in the 25th minute but the Eels scored a late try to Atini Gafa to only trial 16-10 at half time.

The Magpies were strong, fast and physical and if their three Queensland Represetatives are a guide for the annual NSW V QLD Under 16's match in Melbourne, we should be in for an absolute cracker down at Etihad Stadium.

Best for the Magpies were their Captain, George Fai, back-rower Tarahawaiki Kaumoana and halfback Lachlan Lewis. For Parramatta, Dillon Khoury, Wayne Francis and Tyrell Fuimaono played with vigour and enthusiasm.

TIGERS END 30 YEAR DROUGHT AT ST MARYS
ourfootyteam logo

The Balmain Tigers have ended a 30 year championship drought by claiming the 2012 SG Ball Cup with a 42-20 win over a highly fancied Canberra Raiders outfit at St Marys.

Doubles to Nathan Milone and destructive second-rower Daniel Rakvin helped the Tigers to a 26 point second half which eventually blew the Raiders off the park.

Balmain’s halves combination of Mitchell Moses, who was Man of the Match, and Mark Daoud were outstanding playing against a very physical Raiders outfit and there was plenty of feeling in the game with a number of scuffles breaking out throughout the match.

The Tigers were first to score through their centre Nathan Milone in the 4th minute but it was the Raiders who then dominated for most of the half as they ran in two tries to Rourke O’Sullivan and Scott Doyle to lead 10-6.

Balmain responded late in the half though with back to back tries to Leva Li and Rhys Armstrong to take a 16-10 lead into half time.

The best for the Tigers were Moses, second-rower Daniel Ravkin and centre Nathan Milone, while for the Raiders, Anthony Milford, centre Brenko Lee and prop Mitchell Shaw all put in solid performances.

The Tigers progress through to the National Junior Representative Championship against Townsville. The match will be played in Brisbane next weekend.

Balmain Tigers 42 (D Ravkin 2, N Milone 2, L Li, R Armstrong, A Zarounas tries; M Farrell 7 goals) def. Canberra Raiders 20 (A Milford, S Doyle, J Chudleigh, R O’Sullivan tries; A Milford 2 goals)

PARRAMATTA WIN 2012 HAROLD MATTHEWS CUP

The Parramatta Eels have won the 2012 Harold Matthews Cup after they held off a fast finishing Newcastle Knights outfit 39-32 at St Marys Leagues Stadium today (5/5/2012).

Doubles to Man of the Match Dillon Khoury and hooker Jason Tramontana saw the Eels race to a 28-8 lead with 20 minutes remaining but back to back tries to Knights captain Sione Mata’Utia had the score back to 28-20 just minutes later. The Eels steadied the ship however with Khoury’s second and a try to replacement Ryan Holman, moving the score to 38-20 at the 45th minute.

The Knights managed to scramble late with tries to Mata’Utia and Dean Gavin but it was too little too late for the Knights as the Eels ran out seven point victors.

Newcastle were starved of possession in the early exchanges due to mistakes which lead to two Eels tries. A repeat set from Parramatta’s first kick set the platform for Tramontana’s first and just minutes late, Brad Mullins dropped a bomb cold which gifted Khoury his first try.

The Novocastrians had their first attacking set of six 10 minutes into the match and once they started to get more possession began to trouble the Eels out wide. Tevita Panagi turned provider for Dean Gavin when he threw a perfect cut-out pass sending the winger over in the corner.

The Knights brought the score back to 12-8 when a hard-running Mata’Utia crossed for his first out wide but the Eels would answer back through Tramontana as they took an 18-8 lead into half time.

Parramatta were far too strong up the middle and were served well by hooker Jason Tramontana, fullback Dillon Khoury and second-rower Michael Black, while for the Knights captain Sione Mata’Utia was outstanding along with winger Dean Gavin.

The Eels now face Souths Logan, who won the Cyril Connell Cup (Queensland’s version of the Harold Matthew Cup), in the 2012 National Junior Representative Championships in Brisbane next weekend.

Parramatta Eels 39 (D Khoury 2, J Tramontana 2, A Gafa, T Oloapu, R Rona tries; D Khoury 5 goals; J Vidal field goal) def. Newcastle Knights 32 (S Mata'Utia 3, D Gavin 2, T Pangai tries; J McNamara 4 goals).

PARRAMATTA EELS VS NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS

HAROLD MATTHEWS CUP
St Marys Leagues Stadium, Saturday, May 5, Kick-off: 1.00pm

Parramatta head into this Grand Final without their superstar Tyrell Fuimaono who took the early guilty plea for a striking charge from last weekend’s 14-12 win over Penrith. The worry for Chris Hutchinson and his coaching staff, besides the loss of their best player, is who will handle the human wrecking ball that is Newcastle’s Tevita Pangai now?

Pangai was at his damaging best against Balmain last weekend and he has enough talent, when he decides to use it, to win this game himself. A problem for him and his coach, Matt Hunter, is he can sometimes overplay his hand and get away from what he is meant to do. The Knights have a crafty young halves pairing in Travis Edwards and Jake McNamara and they are more than capable of steering the side around the park, they do not need Pangai assuming the role of playmaker.

With the aforementioned loss of Fuimaono, the emphasis on gaining go-forward now lies with Eels front-rowers Wayne Francis and Alex Twal. These young tyros need to maintain ascendancy around the ruck so the Parramatta halves pairing of Jason Vidal and Troy Dargan can get some attacking opportunities. A few other players worth a watch are former Raiders, NSW and Australian fullback Brett Mullins’ boy Brad, Knights Captain Sione Mata’Utia, Parramatta fullback Dillon Khoury and Eels hooker Joseph Tramontana.

BALMAIN TIGERS VS CANBERRA RAIDERS

SG BALL CUP GRAND FINAL
St Marys Leagues Stadium, Saturday, May 5. Kick-off: 3.00pm

The Canberra Raiders will have the mental edge heading into the 2012 SG Ball Cup Grand Final having beaten the Tigers 40-8 in the elimination finals a few weeks ago. Both sides had to fight hard for their place in the Grand Final last weekend with the Raiders clawing back a 26-4 halftime deficit to record an astonishing 33-32 golden point victory over the Sydney Roosters, while the Tigers held off a fast finishing South Sydney side to win 34-26.

There is so much to like about this game. Some of the matchups between key players will not only decide who lifts the trophy but could also decide who pulls on a NSW jersey come State of Origin Game II. Mitchell Moses’ (Balmain) battle with Anthony Milford (Canberra) pits the competition’s two highest point scorers (and try scorers for that matter) against each other in a matchup which will go a long way to decide the outcome of this match.

A big challenge for the Raiders will be containing Balmain’s explosive back-rower Salesi Funaki out wide. The task will be given to Canberra’s second-row pairing of Scott Doyle and Josh Baker. Both model their game off the Raiders Shaun Fensom, tireless in defence and never shying away from a hit up. These two young men have their work cut out for them if they want to stop Funaki and ultimately take premiership glory back to the nation’s Capital.

ANOTHER RECORD FOR LAURIE SPINA SHIELD

THE popularity of the Laurie Spina Shield continues to grow with a record number of teams signing up for the 2012 edition of the annual under-11s rugby league carnival, presented by Guildford Coal, in June.

Organised by the North Queensland Toyota Cowboys in honour of their first club captain, this year’s Laurie Spina Shield will feature 66 teams, an increase of eight on the previous record set last year.

The annual round-robin carnival will be held in Townsville on Friday, 22 June and Saturday, 23 June with the grand final teams getting the opportunity to play as a curtain-raiser to the round 16 Women in League NRL match between the Cowboys and the Canberra Raiders at Dairy Farmers Stadium.

The clubs represented this year range from the Central Cape Suns in Weipa in the north, south to the Rockhampton-based clubs Fitzroys, Gracemere and Brothers and west to the Winton Devils and Mt Isa’s Wanderers Devils and Black Stars.

Every Townsville junior club has entered at least one team, including defending champions Centrals Tigers who will have three teams in the draw.

Among the clubs who will compete this year after not taking part in the 2011 carnival are the Barcaldine Sand Goannas, Gemfields Giants, Central Scorpions, Biloela Panthers, Mareeba Gladiators and the Cloncurry Bulls.

Toyota Cowboys player development manager Dean Payne said the great response from junior clubs across North Queensland and Central Queensland was an indication of how much enjoyment the Laurie Spina Shield provides to young footballers.

“To set another record this year shows how positive the word of mouth about the Laurie Spina is and we’ve taken the carnival to a new level this year with the help of Guildford Coal,” Payne said.

“Sixty-six teams is the capacity for us at the moment.

“Once again we’ll have teams from across a wide region of Queensland come together in Townsville for two days of footy and fun.

“It proves how popular rugby league, and this competition, is.”

Nine teams played in the inaugural carnival in 1997 and it’s estimated that this year’s event, with around 900 players and their families, will contribute more than $1 million to the Townsville community.

“To set another record this year is fantastic news and I’m looking forward to seeing all the kids enjoying their rugby league for the two days later in June,” Laurie Spina said.

“While it is a competition and we’ll present the shield to the winning team on Dairy Farmers before the Raiders on the Saturday, the focus of this carnival is on participation, sportsmanship and enjoying the greatest game of all.”

An added feature of the carnival is the Fastest Feet relay which will be held at halftime of the Cowboys v Raiders game.

Each of the 66 teams will enter a squad to take part in the relay conducted from sideline to sideline.

KEEBRA PARK GOES INTERNATIONAL
The Keebra Park Sports Specialisation program has always had strong ties with the English Super League with graduates Jamaal Lolesi, Dallas Hood, Greg Eastwood and Rangi Chase all experiencing Football in the UK’S premier competition.

More recently, graduate Sam Moa has been plying his trade with Hull FC and Keebra Park is proud to announce that through a relationship fostered between Hull coach Peter Gentle and Keebra Park coach Greg Lenton, that opportunities now exist for young British players to experience rugby league “Down Under.”

The arrangement will see young school aged student attend the world renowned rugby league nursery on Queensland’s Gold Coast with Young Hull FC Academy member and England Youth team fullback, Harry Tyson-Wilson to be the first.

The following Blog by Harry will be a weekly account of his experiences and thoughts as he embarks on this exciting journey.

6 MONTHS DOWNUNDER

2013 has been quite an eventful year in Rugby League for me so far with selection for Yorkshire and inclusion in the England Under 16 years team to play Wales. Now I have been offered another opportunity which involves me flying to the other side of the world and living away from home for six months in Australia.

I have decided to write a short blog each week to keep in touch with family friends and supporters back at home so this is the first instalment of the Harry Tyson-Wilson “6 Months in Australia” Blog.

Well after a long and quite uneventful flight from Manchester to Australia with Emirates Airlines I eventually arrived on the Gold Coast on Monday the 16th April.

I have been a little apprehensive about my six month visit but have been looking forward to seeing Australia and experiencing a different way of life.

My homestay is in Southport which is about a mile from the beach and is a nice big house right next to the school I will be attending.

The School is called Keebra Park SHS and is a school that is well known for both it’s academic and sporting programs. One of the main reasons I am here is for the Rugby League Program as I am part of Hull Fc’s rugby academy and this is an opportunity I was given by them to assist with my athletic development.

The plan is for me to experience the game in Australia, to take part in the school’s training program and then return to England with a few new skills and with the knowledge that only an environment like this can offer.

My house mate is also a member of the sports specialisation program and he is contracted to the Wests Tigers NRL club in Sydney and plays for the Schools Open team. He is from New Zealand and plays Prop.

Last night I went to watch the Opens game and was amazed at the speed of the game and the physical development of the lads here as they all do weights and fitness training most days and it seems to pay off in the game situation.

I’ve also been given some season passes to watch the local NRL team who are called the Titans so I hope to make use of them. This week on Friday we have training at 6-30 so I’m looking forward to getting involved with that.

This weekend I will have a bit of a look about the place and probably sleep well.

I’ve been a bit knackered since I got here and no-one seemed to understand what I meant when I got here because they have different words for things.

That combined with my broad accent means that communication is a bit slow to start but I’m sure in a few weeks I will be speaking fluent Aussie and they will be learning a bit of Yorkshire slang.

I’ve also just found out that I’ve got my first game tonight in the Titans Cup which is a competition that the Gold Coast Titans put on so that’s on Monday and I’ll add that to my next blog.

I’ll write an update next week and keep you all informed of how I’m going .

PS. I havn’t seen a kangaroo yet.

MOMENT OF TRUTH FOR TIGER CUBS

THE BIGGEST stage in bush football greets the Greater Northern Tigers at Mudgee tomorrow and even if the crowd won’t be on their side the region’s best young players will lap up the atmosphere in the Country U18s Championships semi-final against the Western Rams.

The Rams will probably start as favourites in the main curtain-raiser to the City/Country Origin match after their impressive showing last weekend but the Tigers have some improvement left in them.

“We’ll even have the crowd against us,” GN coach Ron Dellar said.

“But that might stir them up a bit.

“The boys know it’s a step up.

“They know what I was talking about a fortnight ago now.

“A few of them got sat on their bums very quickly.

“But they’re lifting and that’s the main thing.”

The Tigers beat the Southern Stingrays (26-18) and Central Coast (38-6) but were slow starting in both games.

“We need to control the ball better than last week,” Dellar said.

“We did okay coming out of our own half but then a few balls hit the ground.

“They weren’t trying to do anything fancy.

“So the ball security has to be a bit better.”

The Rams beat the East Coast Dolphins (30-16) and the Stingrays (40-nil).

They are also the reigning Country champions.

“Their front rower is very good, (Jake) Goodwin,” Dellar said.

“I would think he will be first front rower picked for Country.

“And their hooker goes good – very quick out of dummy half.

“Their backs got a good roll-on against the Southern Stingrays.”

Country jumpers are up for grabs and a few Tigers should now make the team.

But if they can reach the final next weekend even more players are likely to wear the maroon and gold.

“I know a few of them are in the mix,” Dellar said.

“If you make the final and win it you usually get at least six in the Country team.

“When we won it a few years ago we had seven in.

“The further you go the more you get.”

There will also be a familiar face in the Western side.

Casey Burgess was one of the Group 4 U18s and Greater Northern Academy’s best players over the past few years but the Coolah local has decided to play club football in Group 11 this season and has also made the Rams squad.

Jock Waters will move to the front row for the Tigers and is replaced in the second row by Daniel Howe.

The other possible change is in the backs where Jacobe Dowell may move into the starting side on the wing.

The other semi sees Newcastle take on the Bidgee Bulls.

JUNIOR FOOTY IS ALIVE AND KICKING AFTER KNOCKOUT

THE 2012 junior league season has started and while the first competition points won’t be up for grabs until April 28, the success of the Dubbo association’s recent knockout carnival suggests everyone is glad that footy has returned.

Teams from the under-10s through to under-15s were in action, playing 86 matches across the course of the day and Dubbo Junior Rugby League president Neil Millgate said the event was a winner.

“We got a lot of good responses about the day and we’ve had some towns telling us they want to be a part of it next year,” Millgate said.

“The knockout went from 8am until 4.45pm and we had no incidents and the only injury was a boy from the 14s tearing a hamstring.

“A lot of work went into the day and there were some tired and sore bodies on the Sunday, particularly from the referees.”

There is something very pure about watching sport at a junior level.

Whether it be the sense of team spirit, the lack of care about winning or losing, or the coach trying to get the team to run the right way in the very early days, there is something enjoyable about a day at the junior footy.

And that enjoyment was evident when speaking to three players from the St John’s under-10s.

Bulldogs fan Steven Kehoe is the son of local jockey Jeff Kehoe, who acts as an assistant coach with the team.

“We won our first game but lost the second one,” he said.

“Sometimes I play in the centres and sometimes in the second-row and we’re looking forward to getting to play on the big fields this year.”

Fullback Sam Taylor is the son of Macquarie’s Col Taylor and he admitted his ‘defection’ to St John’s caused a bit of angst in the family.

“I’ve been playing since I was in year 2 and I want to try and play for CYMS when I’m old enough,” he said.

“Dad plays for Macquarie so he’s not real happy about that. I want to play for CYMS and if I’m good enough maybe then play for the Tigers.

“We’re a good side I think and I hope we can win some games this year.

“I always wait for footy season to start, I don’t really play cricket or anything.”

Charlie Toshack’s dad Paul Toshack was a local junior who spent some time with Eastern Suburbs.

Paul is now the coach of the under-10s and according to Charlie, he pushes the boys pretty hard.

“Dad wanted to coach so that’s why I play footy,” he said.

“We train two times a week on Wednesday and Friday and we’re always pretty tired at the end of it.

“This is my third year playing footy and I like to play halfback. In the NRL I go for the Cowboys and my favourite player is Matty Bowen.”
RUNCIMAN FINDING HIS FEET IN CENTRES

CHARLY Runciman has been able to draw some parallels between his St George-Illawarra under-20s side’s slow start and the one experienced by his former club Dubbo CYMS in 2011.

After a slow start that saw the Dragons lose to Newcastle, Cantebury and Wests Tigers in the opening three weeks of the competition the side has transformed, winning three of its past four matches to sit just outside the top eight.

After playing the bulk of his football at fullback, Runciman has been shifted to the centres this season and is starting to find his feet.

Last weekend he scored two tries as the Dragons gained revenge against the Knights with a 36-16 win at Kogarah Oval.

When the Daily Liberal contacted Runciman this week he was studying for an exam as part of the engineering degree he is completing at the University of Wollongong.

Mixing study with football is nothing new for the former CYMS flyer, who completed his HSC last year while helping the Fishies to the Group 11 title.

“Things are going well with uni and with football we’re starting to improve slowly,” Runciman said.

“It’s very similar to last year with CYMS. We lost the first four or five games but by the end of the season we had gelled and we came out on top.

“The Dragons have a lot of good players at the club and even though we lost a few early it was more that we had trouble finishing games.”

The switch to the centres is something that Runciman has needed time to adapt to, but with NSW Under-20s fullback Evander Cummins in the squad it is a move the 18-year-old was happy to make.

The early part of his progression has been to concentrate on defence but with six tries from seven matches so far in 2012 the attacking side of his game is starting to feature as well.

“I’m having to do a lot more defence than I was at fullback and the game is a lot quicker down here as well,” Runciman said.

“If I can work on my defence and not make too many mistakes and it helps us win games then I’ll be happy.

“Moving to the centres gives me versatility and that can work in your favour if they’re looking at you for first grade down the track some time.”
TOYOTA U/20'S ORIGIN SQUADS NAMED

From Bachelor of Science, Business and Education degrees to apprentice builders, plumbers and electricians, the New South Wales and Queensland teams named today for the inaugural Toyota Under 20’s State of Origin feature players from a wide and varied range of study and work backgrounds.

NSWRL Chairman Mr John Chalk and QRL Chief Executive Officer Mr Robert Moore today announced the teams in Sydney and Brisbane respectively ahead of their clash at Penrith’s Centrebet Stadium on Saturday (April 21).

They will be coached by former Origin greats and now Melbourne Storm coaching colleagues, Dean Pay (NSW) and Kevin Walters (QLD).

All players selected have played in the Toyota Cup, while the GIO NSW team includes six players with NRL experience – Cheyse Blair (Eels), Jacob Miller (Wests Tigers), Harry Siejka (Panthers), Matt Groat (Wests Tigers), Boyd Cordner (Roosters) and Alex McKinnon (Knights).

More importantly, in line with the “No, work, no study, no play” policy of the Toyota Cup, eight of the players selected for the Under 20s Origin are studying at university; five are doing apprenticeships; four are in traineeships; 12 are doing Certificate III/ Diplomas; and seven are in general employment.

NRL Welfare and Education Manager, Mr Paul Heptonstall, said: “The most pleasing aspect about the players selected is that they have embraced the game’s work and study philosophy which has only complemented their development as players.”

Toyota Regional Manager – Eastern Region, Mr Tony Pepper, said: “Toyota is very excited to be involved with the inaugural Under 20s’s State of Origin event.

“We have been involved with the Toyota Cup since its inception and we see this as a natural progression from that very successful program.”

Toyota will donate an education grant to the Man of the Match on Saturday night.

MORE KEEBRA PLAYERS MAKE NRL DEBUT

Congratulations to Keebra Park rugby league program graduate Neccrom Areaiiti who made his NRL debut this weekend for the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Neccrom had been named 18 man for the past three weeks but was elevated to the bench for the round seven clash with the New Zealand Warriors at Mount Smart Stadium.

Neccrom progressed through the schools Rugby League specialisation program in 2008 and after playing Toyota Cup for Wests Tigers in 2009, went on to play in the Warriors Toyota Cup winning side of 2010.

He has been recently playing for North Sydney in the VB Cup and his call up to the Souths squad was a result of his hard work at training and some solid form in the pre-season.

Well done Neccrom.

THE NAME Folau will again feature in a rugby league competition as 17-year-old centre John makes his Toyota Cup Debut for the Parramatta Eels on Sunday.

The younger brother of GWS Giants player Israel Folau will step up from the Eels’ S.G. Ball Cup side to face the Sharks at Toyota Stadium, Woolooware.

The Patrician Brothers’ College Blacktown student plays in the centres and said selection was his career highlight.

“It’s definitely a highlight for me, I’m looking forward to it,” Folau said.

“It’ll be a lot quicker and more physical.”

The Eels’ Toyota Cup coach Steve Speechley said Folau had all the skills to excel at the higher level.

“Playing up in the 20’s will test him physically, but we believe he’s up to it,” Speechley said.

“He’s got great balance, he’s very good on his feet. He’s trained well with us all year and deserves his shot.’‘

The side also includes 17-year-old prospects Pauli Pauli, Frazer Masinamua and Kelepi Tanginoa.

TIGER COACHES REUNITE
Tamworth's - Northern daily LEADER

THE RETURN of the Greater Northern Tigers to the Country Under 18s Championships is not only a nod to tradition but it provides a reunion for coaches Ron Dellar and Garry Gardner.

The pair were the brains trust for many Northern Division Tigers U18s teams before they were separated by the regionalisation of bush footy that saw groups 4, 19 and 21 split up.

Now they join forces again.

“I’ll be back with Garry Gardner,” Dellar said.

“We were split up for a few years with Group 21 going the other way.

“But it’ll be back to the way it used to be and I think it makes a lot of sense.”

Dellar is head coach this year with Gardner as assistant.

They are rejoicing in the decision to bring the old ND back together, but not because the regional sides they were involved with weren’t competitive.

The Oxley Pioneers and Central Hunter Power both had a lot of success, but Greater Northern should be strong too.

“We (Northern Division) won it in 2003 at Cessnock and we won as the Pioneers the first year,” Dellar said.

“We won it the first year and we were favourites to win it the next year but Central (Hunter) beat us in the final.”

The Tigers travel to Wingham today ahead of their round one clash with the Southern Stingrays.

A win in that one tomorrow and another success on Sunday would put the Tigers into the semi finals at Mudgee on City/Country Origin day.

“If we win we play a loser but if we get beat we play a winner,” Dellar said.

“A couple of years ago the Pioneers won our first game against Northern Rivers but we got beaten by two points against Newcastle in the second game.

“Our for and against was good so we got through.

“(You don’t want) a situation like that.

“If we win we play the loser of Newcastle and the Central Coast.

“Then off to Mudgee.”

The Tigers will train at Wingham this afternoon to complete their preparations.

Dellar said the forward battle will be important and the Tigers seemed to have the goods in that area with a mixture of players from the Greater Northern Academy and a few others.

“We’ve got Ben Allen in the front row with Josh Pursche, and we know him (from GNA),” Dellar said.

“Logan Harris is in his second year and Jock Waters is actually in his third year.

“He made Country last year.

“He’s in the second row with Jeff Golledge and Ethan Gaffney.

“Then there’s Josh King who goes alright and Dylan Howe from Narrabri and we know what he can do.

“Jay Gallagher from Glen Innes, you put him on and he’ll tackle all day for you.

“He’s one of the younger brigade.”

The only changes to the squad from the day it was chosen see Dylan Griffiths and Tremayne Sanbrook drop out with injuries.

Hayden Cunneen moves to the wing while Brady Smith from Singleton is the new player on the bench.

TIGERS: 1 Will Gooch (Farrer), 2 Ethan Christensen (Muswellbrook), 3 Brad Cappello (Farrer), 4 Mitch Dening (West Lions), 5 Hayden Cunneen (Muswellbrook), 6 Isaac McCormick (Denman), 7 John Brady (Farrer), 8 Ben Allan (Farrer), 9 Logan Harris (Farrer), 10 Josh Pursche (Farrer), 11 Jeffrey Golledge (Scone), 12 Jock Waters (Armidale), 13 Ethan Gaffney (North Tamworth), 14 Josh King (Singleton), 15 Daniel Howe (Narrabri), 16 Jacobe Dowell (Muswellbrook), 17 Jay Gallagher (Glen Innes), 18 Brady Smith (Singleton).

ZAC BACK TO EYE TALENT
Tamworth's - Northern daily LEADER

ZAC Russ returned to Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School for more coaching and development yesterday as part of a unique preparation to a new Group 4 first grade premiership season.

Zac’s Narrabri first grade side hosts reigning premiers at Collins Park under lights on Saturday night in the opening round of the 2012 season.

He’s in Tamworth this week helping foster the games of talented 12 to 16 year-olds in the annual Country Rugby League Development Camp in his role as an ARL development officer.

The 22-year-old Russ went to primary school at Wee Waa and was once one of those young starry-eyed players, training and playing at Farrer from Year 7, before heading off to the NRL and seasons with Parramatta Eels and Canberra Raiders.

Then he played with South Logan in the Queensland State Cup before returning to Canberra last year to take up a role as an ARl development officer.

Now he’s based in Tamworth, but travelling the region fostering the juniors while also trying to find time to train with his younger brother Sean and the Narrabri Blues coach Adrian “Floyd” Sunderland.

“I’m looking forward to playing again,” the former Farrer and Australian Schoolboy said.

“Good to get back out to Narrabri and play with Sean. Haven’t played with him since I was 12.

“It’s going to be a big night too. The first time they’ve played under lights out there. Hopefully that will be a big drawcard.”

Narrabri has been steadily building up under the former first grade pivot Sunderland, Greater Northern regional manager Scott Bone said.

“They’ll be competitive and hard to beat out there (Collins Park),” Bone said. Narrabri tackles a West Tamworth side gunning for a fourth successive Group 4 title under coach Tony La Chiusa and with inspirational captain Brendan Hunt back from injury.

It’s not the only Saturday game either, with North Tamworth Bears beginning their new season at home on Jack Woolaston Oval against a Wee Waa Panthers captain-coached by electrifying fullback Brenton Cochrane.

Shaun Ferguson returns to coach a Bears side bristling with some new Perth and Maori imports but missing the talented of injured prop Doug Biffin and big bopping fellow prop Jace Wallington (Western Australia mines)

Out at Moree the Boars welcome back club stalwart Todd Mitchell to the first grade coaching position.

“Todd’s back as coach, a lot of kids he had as under 18s are all stepping up to first grade this year,” Bone said.

“They are going to be very young and might need an older prop to settle them down and lead them forward.

“But he’s also got former javelin thrower (and Olympian) Andrew Currey helping with the fitness. They are very confident of being competitive.”

Moree plays Gunnedah Bulldogs at Taylor Oval on Sunday.

The Bulldogs are coached by former West Tamworth and Kootingal hooker Geoff Sharpe, who takes over from the talented James Wynne.

“James was great for Gunendah and a big loss,” Bone said.

“He was able to bring a few old heads like Narne (John Lennan) and Stumpy (Steve Howard) back to the club and help foster their young kids. Sharpie’s been doing it hard because a lot of the players were still playing cricket and oztag and other stuff.

“They should be able to build again on what they’ve done the past few years though.”

Bone said Groups 19 and 21 both started their competitions before Easter.

“They also look like being good competitions. Group 21’s first round had one game winning by two points and the other two ending in draws,” he said.

“Groups 21 and 19 both kick off again this weekend, be like a start of a new season for them after the Easter break.

“And this week we also have the Greater Northern Division under 18s at Wingham in the Country Championships too.”
GROUP 4 U16S PREPARED FOR BIG CAMPAIGN
Tamworth's - Northern daily LEADER
GROUP 4 will be well prepared for this year’s Country Under 16s Championships after naming its squad on Sunday and pencilling in training sessions and trial games between now and the carnival.

Coach Wayne Griffiths was happy with the squad he and his selection panel chose after trials at Scully Park on Sunday.

“A lot of them have come through the under 15s and they have developed really well,” he said.

“The good part about it is we’ve picked good combinations. That can be really crucial in any rep team.”

Gunnedah is the most represented club, with six Bulldog pups named in the squad of 21.

Farrer and Narrabri have five each, four West Lions were named and Moree’s Jaram Haines gives the Boars a

representative.

That squad will now start to train and play trial matches in the lead-up to the country titles.

“We don’t go away till June for the Country Championships,” Griffiths said.

“We’ll give them the maximum preparation for the Country Championships.

“I’m not saying they will be better prepared than last year but they will be well prepared.”

Griffiths said he was looking for some trial games against teams from other parts of the country that will test his squad and whip them into shape for the carnival.

“Western Division teams are always good yardsticks, them and Maitland,” he said.

“So teams from the Hunter Valley and Western Division would be a very good yard-stick for us.

“It will let us know where we’re at and what we’ve got to do.”

Training has been pencilled in for this Saturday at Gunnedah from 5pm but this is to be confirmed.

The Country U16 Championships will be played at Forster again this year.

1 Callum Hayne (Farrer), 2 Alan Curgenven (Gunnedah), 3 Luke Tuckey (Narrabri), 4 Billy Nean (West Lions), 5 Jarmarley Jarrrard (WL), 6 Jaram Haines (Moree), 7 Mitch Doring (WL), 8 Connor Fordham (G), 9 Trent Eather (F), 10 Blake Hatton (G), 11 Zac Leonard (F), 12 Kalin Eade (G), 13 Beau Parry (WL), 14 Dylan Gale (N), 15 Angus McTavish (F), 16 Guy Gleeson (N), 17 Sam Sadler (N), 18 Jack Reeves (G), 19 Josh Small (N), 20 Kye McDonald (G), 21 Matt Burling (F).
NEWCASTLE TAKE OUT 2012 CHALLENGE

Newcastle for the fourth time in six years has taken out the Straits U18’s division. Newcastle easily accounted for their opponents, CRL FWAS and South Australia on day one before defeating a determined Penrith outfit to take out the title.

While in the Xylem Water U16’s division Parramatta 1 went through undefeated to claim the title with Group XI finishing runner up after losing only one match which was against Parramatta 1.

Nine teams travelled to Nyngan to take part in the sixth Nyngan Easter Rugby League Challenge. NRL junior development sides Parramatta and Newcastle attended for the sixth consecutive year while Penrith attended for their fourth.

They were joined by South Australia, Group XI and CRL Far West Academy.

The event got underway on Friday evening where players got to experience the country lifestyle participating in the “Golden Tusk Games”. Players had to herd sheep, milk cows and cook damper in what was an entertaining evening.

The Challenge kicked off on Saturday morning with the CRL Far West Academy taking on Parramatta 1 in the Xylem Water U16’s division.

The opening 10 minutes where an arm wrestle, but it was the Academy side who posted first points taking a 6 nil lead. By halftime Parramatta 1 led 10-6 and went on with it in the second half to defeat the Academy side 24-14.

The second match of the day saw the CRL Far West Academy take on Newcastle in the Straits U18’s division. Newcastle got out of the blocks quickly and easily accounted for the Academy side by fulltime.

Sunday saw two high quality games played with the first in the Xylem Water U16’s division which saw Parramatta 1 defeat Penrith 8-6 with only a penalty goal separating the two sides.

While in the Straits U18’s division Newcastle defeated Penrith 42-20 to clinch the division title. It was a close contest with the only 2 points between them at halftime but Newcastle scored 20 unanswered points in the second half to claim the win.

The event was boosted with the attendance of two former NRL referees, Stave Clark and Sean Hampstead. Also in attendance where Toyota Cup/NSW Cup referees Scott Murray, Scott Shepherd, Nic Morel and Tim Rutherford.

At the conclusion of the Challenge each team was asked to nominate their Most Valuable Player (MVP) throughout the Challenge:

CRL Far West Academy Seniors – James White
CRL Far West Academy Juniors – Brydon Ramien
South Australia – Mark Jury
Parramatta 1 – Andrew Lentini
Parramatta 2 – Matt Price
Group XI – Alex Wilson
Penrith Seniors – Chris Vaegaau
Penrith Juniors – Zach Campbell
Newcastle – Jarrod Smith

Event organiser Col Wright was extremely happy with the 2012 Challenge.

“The weekend has been a huge success and everyone has enjoyed themselves immensely” said Mr Wright.

“The standard of rugby league over the weekend has been of very high quality and most importantly the teams behaviour both on and off the field has been exemplary.

“It is fantastic to have the continued support from the Sydney clubs and Newcastle and it shows that they see it as an important part in their players development. We would like to extend an invitation for any other clubs that may be interested to take part in 2013.

“An event of this size would not be possible without the support of many volunteers, businesses and sponsors. I would like to thank the Nyngan community for their support and there are well over 100 volunteers who assisted with the event. Most importantly I would like to thank the sponsors Xylem Water and Straits for the continued support. Also the support provided by the Bogan Shire Council, Nyngan Tigers, Far West Academy of Sport, New South Wales Rugby League and Country League has been invaluable.”

YOUNG CAPRAS HIT TOP FORM

MORE than 200 points scored in their past three Cyril Connell Cup matches means the Young Capras U16 team is headed for this year's competition semi-finals.

At the weekend the team had two cup matches, which were expected to test the Central Queensland players.

It did not happen, with the Capras too strong for the Ipswich Jets, winning 70-24, and then crushing the Toowoomba Clydesdales 58-4.

Little wonder coach Steve Parle was a happy man after two resounding victories, which came on the back of another big win, over Mackay at Gladstone.

"The boys are really in top form," he said.

"Each week they are getting better."

Just as well there is still a little improvement left in the side because the competition is heading towards the final stages, with the Capras set to meet the top-placed team in the South-Eastern Conference in Brisbane on April 21.

First the Capras must face Northern Pride at Browne Park in two weeks but Parle said the result would not matter because the Capras had already booked their place in the semis.

The team might have done well scoring so many points but five-eighth Cooper Bambling can take a big chunk of the credit.

The young playmaker has been in sparkling form in his second year with the team and at the weekend gave the opposition a hammering as he scored 56 points himself.

"He scored more points than most teams," Parle said.

Bambling's total came from five tries and 18 goals.

"It's a bonus when he kicks goals," Parle said.

"He sets up teammates and defends like a front-rower.

"He earned his keep."

While some individuals excelled, Parle was happy with the team performance.

"We are actually playing football," he said.

Lock Kieran Duffin was another to earn praise from the coach, as was front-rower Dean McAdam, while second-rower Jonathan Stoll put in a gutsy display on his return from a break after suffering concussion.

The under-18 Capras were not quite so fortunate in the Mal Meninga Cup, winning well against the Clydesdales but faltering in their match with Ipswich Jets.
NEWCASTLE SCHOOLBOYS WIN KNIGHTS CUP NEWCASTLE SCHOOLBOYS WIN KNIGHTS CUP

Newcastle Schoolboys Representative 13's/14's/15's & 16's teams were successful in winning the Knights Cup played at Salamander Sports Complex on Saturday 31st March.

Teams from the North Coast, (Groups 2 & 3), Maitland, Central Coast and Farrar High Tamworth competed in the competition.

All four Newcastle teams finished on top of their pool and all progressed to the final. The 13's and 15's won their finals, the 14's and 16's both narrowly losing their finals. It was a combined effort by all teams that saw Newcastle Schoolboys finish on top of the points score therefore winning the Knight's Cup.

Congratulations to all the players, coaches and trainers for a very successful result.
Keebra Park Rugby LeagueFIRST ROUND OF BRONCOS COMPETITION

The first round of the Broncos Competition kicked off on the Gold Coast this week with some hard fought games.

These games seed the teams for National Schoolboys Cup knockout rounds and as such are important for all schools involved.

Palm Beach Currumbin played out a 24-24 draw at Galleon Way while at Southport, Keebra Park had a 40-4 win over rivals Wavell.

Scores are yet to come to hand from the Coombabah game but will be posted as soon as they do.

The Keebra -Wavell game was a physical encounter with Keebra's Physicality eventually getting them over the top of Wavell who seemed happier when shifting wide. Jai Arrow was strong as was Dallas Graham. These encounters set the tone for what is sure to once again be a highly competitive season of representative football.

With injured players set to return, competition for spots is also likely to be high and this will further the intensity of what is already the hardest form of Open age schoolboy football.

The Group 4 Under 18’s team were not only successful in retaining the Brazer Shield for the best side in the Greater Northern Region, but were also successful at the selection table at the completion of the Greater Northern Region Under 18’s trials today in Tamworth.

The Group 4 side opened the day with a victory over Group 21 22 to 18. John Brady scored on the bell to secure the victory.

In the second game of the day the GN Chairman’s side defeated Group 19 24 to nil. The Chairman’s side, who were players from the 3 groups played well after meeting at the ground on the day.

The 3rd game of the day, was played between Group 19 and Group 21. Group 21 were victorious in this game by 22 to 6. The down side to the game was what looks to be a serious injury to Warialda’s Luke Smith.

The final game of the day, was between the 2 early winners in Group 4 and the GN Chairman’s XIII. The Chiarman’s side led 6 to 4 at the half, but a dominate display in the second half saw the Group 4 side run out the winners 22 to 6.

The Group 4 side was then rewarded with 9 player named in the Greater Northern squad in preparation of the Country Championships, which will be held at Wingham on the 14th and 15th April.
