SECOND HALF FIGHTBACK EARNS MURRI WIN

Story & Photo's By : QRL Media

The Under 16 Murri side have earned a hard-fought 36-26 win in an entertaining game at Mudgee's Glen Willow Sports Complex.

The match began with mutual respect from both teams, with the side shaking hands before the kick off. There was also a moment of silence for former Murri coach Jim Stevens and respected NSW identity Sol Bellear.

On the field, thing did not start well for the Murris as they lost the ball in heavy defence early.

NSW were quick to capitalise and scored via Tyrese Williams out wide to the right for a 4-0 lead.

Both teams then settled in and tested each other out, with complete sets ending up with balls kicked over the dead-ball line.

NSW received a penalty and worked another similar play out right, but luckily for Queensland, the pass sent over the sideline.

The Murri side then made sure the good luck counted and following a good run from Tuvalli Pereira and a bust from prop Nic Fenton; Zac Laybutt was able to pop a great pass out to Watjerra Briggs to score.

Laybutt then nailed a tricky goal attempt for a 6-4 lead.

Despite some spirited defending – including when Queensland had four defenders chancing when NSW made a break after a charge down – the Koori side were able to put on the next two tries, firstly with an attack down the left corner and the next after a clever kick ahead was too much for Queensland to handle out the back, losing it under pressure.

With just over five minutes left in the first half, Queensland responded.

They forced the ball lose from one of the dangerous NSW forwards and with the resulting scrum, were able to produce points thanks firstly to another run from Fenton and Queensland Players Player Coby Fechner. Ben McKellar continued the good play that was finished off by a try to halfback Reece Walsh who reached out next to the right upright.

Laybutt was again successful with the conversion and NSW led 14-12 at the break.

The second half saw Queensland score the first try with Walsh running to the line and finding himself through the other side, going straight up the middle and under the posts to score and put his side on the lead.

Queensland went further in front when Pereira played to the whistle and found himself over after a messy period of play. Laybutt – who was flawless with the boot all night – added the extras for a 24-14 lead.

However, NSW never gave up and were the next over when their big number 10 crashed through after they earned themselves a scrum 20m out from their line.

Queensland skipper Larson Dale-Doyle however hit straight back for his team after scooping up a loose ball and it was soon 30-20 with eight minutes left to go.

As history has shown, not team is ever safe in this fixture and NSW were in again with only two and a half left on the clock after producing a great try down their left-hand side – displaying good team work before Tyrone Mead eventually touched the ball down.

However, with the game on the line – Briggs produced a key play, taking an intercept and running over to score his second and to seal the result for his team.

JUNIOR SHARKS WIN BIG AGAINST THE BULLDOGS

ourfooty media

The Matthews Cup, SG Ball and Tarsha Gale Cup Sharks all enjoyed big wins over the Bulldogs in round two Junior Rep matches played at the Sharks Academy Fields at Cronulla High School yesterday.

The Tarsha Gale girls got the day off to fast start with a comprehensive 70-18 win, before the under-16 Matthews Cup boys dominated their match in registering a 30-6 victory, while the Ball Sharks made it a treble with a 34-16 thumping of the Bulldogs in keeping all three teams undefeated after two rounds of the junior rep competitions.

First up were the Tarsha Gale Sharks in what was their first outing following a round one bye, however they were quickly into gear, racing away to a 48-18 half time lead.

The second half followed a similar pattern, the girls adding 22 more points while keeping their opponents scoreless in what was a performance set to put other teams in the Tarsha Gale competition on notice.

Maddison Higgins-Ashby had a field day with a personal tally of four tries and a goal, with Zali Fay and Quincy Dodd also notching two tries each in the win.

Following up on the fast start to the day from their female club mates the Matthews Cup Sharks were quickly on the board through a Kade Dykes try in just the fifth minute and when centre Douglas Levi crossed a short time later the home team were high on confidence at 12-0 in front.

A Zac Hodges four pointer made it 12-0 at the break, with the Sharks extending their lead to 30-0 before a late try to their opponents completed the scoring.

With two wins from two starts the Matthews Sharks now head to Canberra as one of five undefeated teams two rounds into the 2018 season.

Then putting the finishing touches on a successful day for the Sharks, the under-18 Ball squad always held the upper hand in their clash in recording a six tries to three win over the Bulldogs.

Joniah Lualua scored after just three minutes, Isaac Langmuir crossed for the Sharks second and the result was a good as confirmed when the Cronulla under-18 side had forged a 22-6 half time lead.

Also undefeated, the Ball Sharks will be looking to build on their fast start to the season when they travel to Canberra to face the Raiders next week.

All three Sharks sides now head to Belconnen in the ACT for round three matches, with the Tarsha Gale girls first up at 11.30am.

YOUNG SHARKS MAKE STRONG START
ourfooty media

The Matthews Cup and SG Ball Sharks both started their 2018 campaigns with round one victories against the Central Coast in matches played earlier today.

The under-16 Matthews Sharks dusted off the rust of a long pre-season with a comfortable 22-4 win, while the Ball Sharks overran their opponents in the second half in notching a 48-8 victory to also get their season underway on a winning note.

In the Matthews Cup the Sharks were on the board early when centre Jordan Samrani crashed over wide out, before Noah Lester crossed for his teams' second in the south-western corner of Southern Cross Group Stadium in almost an identical position to where the first try was scored.

Samrani kicked the second of the two conversion attempts, with the Sharks taking the 10-0 advantage to the half time break.

Back rower Max Scanlon made it 14-0 after scoring early in the second period, with the Samrani kick at goal extending the margin to 16.

Next it was the turn of Kade Dykes to score, the Sharks half back showing some clever footwork to beat some tired defenders close to the Central Coast line, the conversion pushing the score out to 22-0.

The Central Coast would manage a consolation four pointer after collecting a poor Sharks kick as the full-time siren was sounding, making the final score 22-4 to the home team.

Overall it was a solid first hit out for the Sharks, with Coach Daniel Holdsworth likely to be thrilled with the defensive effort, if a little less pleased with a number of first half errors which put his team under pressure.

In the SG Ball match that followed the Sharks were on the board early through winger Eliah Veikoso , then fullback Declan Casey doubled the lead with a try shortly after to make it 8-0.

Two more four pointers, one each to Vito Tevaga and Nathan Atkinson, both converted by Kai Broadhurst, took the score out to 20-0 at the break.

The second half would follow a similar pattern, with the Sharks going on with the job in notching a strong first up win.

The two Sharks junior rep sides, along with the Tarsha Gale girls who had a first round bye, will be in action again next Saturday when they play the Bulldogs at the Sharks Academy Fields at Cronulla High School.
