WESTERN Australia celebrated a 22-14 victory in yesterday’s John Allen Trophy.
The Ian Prout-coached side led 22-4 at halftime after tries to Zan Pomare-Tutagalevao, Jacob Thomas, Rakheem Tuuta-Edwards and Nika Morehu but had to weather some stiff Northern Territory pressure in the second half before co-captains Christian Smith and Rakheem Tuuta-Edwards could host the John Allen Trophy aloft at Scully Park.
The Top-Enders added tries through five-eighth Leslie Marony’s brilliant 60m effort from a scrum and then Ramone Lewin’s late try from a fumbled bomb.
Christian Smith, Connor Sattler, elusive fullback Wirihana Huriwai, Rakheem Tuuta-Edwards and Dylan Hutchins spearheaded the win.
“We just want to thank everyone for a wicked tournament,” Smith told spectators while making his victory speech. “We’d like to thank our coaching staff for putting it all together. It’s been a great eight or nine weeks.”
Head coach Ian Prout said the 10-week preparation was now well worth it.
“It’s great when it all comes to fruition like this and makes the hard work worth it.
“I was proud of the boys.
“They had to absorb a lot of pressure in the second half.
“They did crack us a few times but that was more to do with them being tired, it’s been a long week.”
He said “good solid defence” in the second half helped repel the NT surge.
They saved two tries with good scrambling defence to hold up attackers over the line.
Rakheem Tuutu-Edwards was then named the most valuable player of the Pool B Affiliated Schools as well as being named WA’s most valuable player for the tournament.
NSW CHS skipper and hooker, Luke Huth, was named most valuable player in the Pool A Championship despite his side missing the final and winning its playoff against ACT yesterday.
Northern Territory had plenty of stars too with centres Layland Dawson and William Nugraha both strong runners, five-eighth Marony a talented ball runner.
Marony was also named his state’s most valuable player for the
tournament.
In earlier games NSW CHS had a 50-6 win over ACT and NSW CCC beat NSW CIS 40-16. |
ENDEAVOUR SPORTS TO STRONG FOR ALL SAINTS MAITLAND
Story By : Nathan Beuman
Photo's By : steve monty
Endeavour Sports have opened their 2014 GIO Schoolboys Cup campaign with a bang, trouncing the visiting All Saints Maitland 38-6 in a dominant display at Remondis Stadium.
Despite All Saints having much of the ball in the opening exchanges, the lose of Dominic Fiorenza to the sin bin early on in the piece, and a hat trick to Endeavour centre John Olive made the task for Maitland to great to overcome.
“Losing (Dominic Fiorenza) just before half time definitely made it a bit harder,” said All Saints Maitland captain Joseph Morris.
“They snuck in a few more tries, but it just comes down to completion work… We just gave them too much ball down their end.”
Having weathered an attacking onslaught by Maitland in the opening ten minutes of the game, Endeavour were able to capitalise off the back of a penalty, when John Olive put Billy Lennon away for the opening points of the game.
From the left touchline, Jamayne Isaako was unable to add the extras, leaving the score at 4-0 after 13 minutes.
When Fiorenza was sent to the sin bin midway through the first half, things started to unravel for All Saints, with Endeavour exploiting the man advantage to run in two tries in ten minutes to lay the platform for a dominant win at home.
John Olive started the tirade in the 17th minute, scoring directly from a scrum ten metres out from the All Saints line to put the score at 8-0 following Isaako’s missed conversion.
Endeavour were in again just three minutes later, when fullback Ryan Cummins sliced straight up the middle, before passing it off to a trailing Rhys Davies, with the halfback scampering away for the try.
Isaako converted from directly in front, kicking the ball on top of the southern grandstand to extend Endeavour’s lead to 14-0 after 21 minutes.
The home side managed to get in one more blow before the break, when Olive made a break after the siren, running away to score under the posts to give Endeavour a commanding 20-0 half time lead.
“It was just based around the whole team really, laying the platform, making it easier for us outside backs to score,” said the GIO Most Trusted Player John Olive.
As if the prospect of coming back from 20 points down wasn’t tough enough, All Saints lost five-eight Callen Edwards to a shoulder injury just three minutes in to the second half.
Three tries in the space of 12 minutes to Endeavour’s John Olive, Luciano Leilua and Jamayne Isaako had the home side up 32-0 with just under a quarter of an hour remaining.
All Saints managed to bag a late consolation try when Maitland captain Joseph Morris shifted the ball right, finding fullback Thomas Rinkin, who dived over to being the score back to 32-6 following Morris’s conversion.
The flurry of tries to Endeavour outside backs continued just before full time, when winger Curtis Scott scored on the overlap out on the right hand flank, securing a 38-6 win for his side.
While the result wasn’t the way he would have liked his team to close out their season, All Saints Maitland captain Joseph Morris was pleased with how his side performed in their inaugural season in the GIO Cup.
“It was a positive season. We have come close in two of our three games, we won one of them and the first (against Matraville Sports High), we got done on the bell,” said Morris.
Hopefully the boys can get up for next season as well.”
While Maitland’s GIO Cup season may have come to an end for 2014, Endeavour Sports have clashes with Holy Cross College and Matraville Sports High scheduled for the start of next term. |

QUEENSLAND SIDES TO MEET IN U15 LEAGUE FINAL
Story & Photo By : Christopher Bath Tamworth's Northern Daily LEADER HISTORY will be made at Scully Park tomorrow when two Queensland sides clash for the first time ever in the Australian U15 Championships.
A field goal with 90 seconds left on the clock was all that separated NSWCHS and QLD Maroon in a re-play of last year’s final, with the same result yesterday afternoon in the semi-final.
In the other match, QLD White held on for a 14-10 victory over NSWCCC.
Queensland White coach Wayne Adams was elated his side had made only its second final with its four-point win over NSW Combined Catholic Colleges.
It was the White (Queensland seconds) side’s first ever win over a “major” NSW side.
“It was a tough game,” Adams said. “The boys completed well though. We were up around 80 per cent coming out of our own half.
“They have been coming together well. It’s the first time we’ve (Queensland seconds) beaten a major NSW team.” (Turn to Page 24 for more).
The most successful side in the history of the competition, NSWCHS, looked to be on top of the second most successful side, the Maroons, with a four-point lead in the second half.
The game started out like a 1980s State of Origin with a bit of a scuffle after a loose ball on the first tackle.
The sides were going end to end as they tested each other out in the middle, possibly even a bit much as the ball didn’t sail wide too often.
Ten minutes before half time and following a Maroon sin bin, CHS winger Mawene Hiroti put out four right fends in a row as he bounced over in the left corner.
Hiroti looked to be their most dangerous player all game and had no problem slotting the conversion from the sideline to go into the sheds up 6-nil.
A quick tap following a dubious head-high decision allowed prop Jayden Bishop to crash over and even the score.
With not much creativity in either side’s attack, the teams went end to end before both scored a try in the left corner, CHS first and then Maroon.
Utility back Travis Turnbull missed from the sideline, although made up for it 10 minutes later with a field goal from in front.
Both sides had a shot at a field goal in the final minutes before Turnbull lifted it over with ease.
The Maroons and Whites are the states Firsts and Seconds so a game where one team wants the other side’s jerseys is always competitive.
Maroons coach Dave Ackers said that it definitely puts some pressure on the top side going into the final.
“It is amazing to have both sides in the final,” Ackers said.
“White are a very handy.”
The coach thought the win highlighted the toughness of the side.
“It wasn’t clinical but we came back from being six down with one in the bin.”
Ackers picked out his front rowers and second rower Lochlyn Sheldon for best on ground.
“He (Sheldon) was the only forward that didn’t come off and was just sensational around the park.”
NSWCHS coach Brendon Reeves was more philosophical after the second loss to Maroon in two years.
“It is very unfortunate but it is all about their futures now,” Reeves said.
The two Queensland sides will clash at 1.15pm tomorrow with NSWCHS playing NSWCCC for third place at 10.45pm.
Northern Territory and Western Australia will play in the John Allen Trophy final at midday today at Jack Woolaston Oval. |

WA TO TACKLE NORTHERN TERRITORY IN CURTAIN RAISER
Story & Photo By : By Geoff Newling Tamworth's Northern Daily LEADER
WESTERN Australia and Northern Territory will play for the John Allen Trophy tomorrow, a main curtain raiser to the all-Queensland Under 15 Championship Final between the Queensland Maroon and White sides.
WA and Northern Territory earned their final berths in the affiliated schools division after good wins yesterday.
WA beat beat Victoria 20-6 with Tim Stinson a standout and Northern Territory had a 52-6 victory over South Australia with Braydon Daly leading the way.
Grant Edwards, president of the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League, said John Allen was a former president of the ASSRL in the early ‘80s.
“He had the idea of the affiliated schools playing in the championship.
“It’s because of him they are here.
“His widow Robyn is here too and will present the trophy on Friday.”
A merit side from the affiliated schools division – NT, WA, South Australia and Victoria – will also be named tomorrow along with a merit side from the six-team main pool of teams.
For Wayne Adams, coach of the Queensland White side, making the final is a rare feat.
“We’ve made the final once before,” he said after yesterday’s 14-10 success over NSWCCC catapulted the side into a championships final against the Queensland Maroons.
His White side is effectively the number two team in the State.
“When we picked the two teams they had the first crack at the best 20,” Adams said.
“I sorted out the rest. The boys have done well. We have had a good draw but you have to make the most of your opportunities.”
NSW CCC coach Chris O’Connell was disappointed in some stiff penalties which led to a crucial try from big Queensland prop Laurence Tominiko
“We were terrible in the first half though,” O’Connell said.
“Played okay in the second but made too many errors.”
Luke Rose was named the White’s best player while Curtis Wilson was CCC’s best.
n The schoolboy championships continue at Jack Woolaston Oval today with two matches at 10.30am and 11.50am.

TIGERS TAME BIG PACK TO SNATCH TITLE
Story & Photo By : Tamworth's Northern Daily LEADER .
GREATER Northern Under 18s repelled a determined second half fight-back from Central Coast to make a double Country Championship success at Scully Park on Saturday with a hard fought 42-24 victory.
After the Tiger Under 16s had scored a good win over Western, the Matt Parsons-coached Tiger 18s came back from an early 6-nil deficit to lead 24-6 at one stage of the second half.
Central Coast’s big pack then found their way to cross for three tries, two of them to beefy lock and captain Rob Rodger to draw level at 24-all.
When Mitch Doring scored his third try the Tigers had bumped it back out to 30-24 but Central Coast refused to lie down.
A major bust from a kick and re-gather down the short side almost found another equaliser but Rodger’s final pass to centre Jackson Crane spilled forward.
Replacement Tom Say made the tackle on Rodger and it was his short run from dummy half that set the Tigers back on their winning way a few minutes later.
When Doring danced through and past some more defenders his popped pass as he went to ground was gratefully accepted by fullback and skipper Callum Hayne. He then fired it out to exciting Uralla centre Jordan Press and the young double Tiger raced over for the second of two electric tries.
It was a gallant effort against a bigger side.
“We had to dig deep, said skipper Callum Hayne in his acceptance speech.
“We made it tough on ourselves but finished strongly.”
Former NRL prop Matt Parsons was delighted with the team, the Newcastle Knights prop impressed by the way they overcame the big Central Coast pack.
“We stopped building our game,” he said of the side’s lapse which saw it give up a 24-6 lead.
“Once they got that back they were right.
“Central Coast were a much bigger team and it was a matter of taking the puff out of them.
“This is a good side.
“Fourteen of those boys are 17-years-old, they are all bottom age and will be back next year. Plus we’ll have some of the 16s coming up as well.”
After slipping behind early young centre, Jordan Press, sparked the Tigers with one of two brilliant tries.
“He’s electric that kid, outstanding, very quick,” Parsons said”
And five-eighth Mitch Doring also deserved high praise for not only scoring three tries but playing a hand in a number of others as well.
“It’s the first time he played exactly how I wanted him to,” Parsons said.
“It was simple.”
Doring agreed and was delighted to be one of six Tigers selected in the Country side to be coached by Scone’s Aaron Watts.
Fullback Callum Hayne, centre Jordan Press, prop Zac Faulkner, secondrower Ryan Holman and prop Brad Johnston will fly to Rockhampton next month with their Country Under 18s. |

MATCH PREVIEW: ERINDALE COLLEGE V HUNTER SPORTS HIGH
Story By : Jackson Russell
(Raiders.com.au) GIO Schoolboy Cup v Erindale 3
Tomorrow see’s Erindale College host Hunter Sports High School in the second round of the GIO Schoolboys Cup at GIO Stadium Canberra at 3:30pm.
The match will be serving as an undercard game for the NRL match between the Canberra Raiders and the Canterbury Bulldogs played at 7:45pm that night.
The Schoolboy teams have been provided this wonderful experience to play on a NRL Game Day by major sponsor of the competition and also stadium sponsor GIO Insurance.
Both sides are coming off opening round losses, and are looking for a positive result to get their GIO Schoolboys Cup run back on track.
Last start Erindale College came up against competition heavy weights Patrician Brothers Blacktown and went down 28-0 in what was a courageous showing from the much younger side at Kippax Oval on June 4th.
Despite this loss Erindale have taken a lot away from the match and their performance. Which will no doubt serve them well coming up against Hunter Sports High School.
“We are feeling very good after that match. All boys are lot more confident and very proud of their performance. We are a young team and to play the way we did against Patrician Brothers was awesome.” Erindale College Captain Kalani Going.
Erindale College will also be boosted by the fact that they have four players coming back from SG Ball commitments to play in Friday’s game.
“Having those boys coming back is big for us. It gives us a lot more experience. Getting to run out onto GIO Stadium in front of our friends and family will be a great feeling” Said Going
Hunter Sports High School faced past winners Westfield Sports High School at Campbelltown Stadium last week and after leading 16-6 at halftime eventually went down 36-16.
“We looked great in the first half but we are a young side and that’s where Westfield got on top of us in the second half and pulled us back in. Fatigue was probably the biggest issue, we know where we went wrong and have talked about the areas that need improving” Said Hunter Sports coach Justin Stewart.
There is no doubt that Hunter Sports will be looking to rectify that result against Erindale College on Friday afternoon. The task however becomes harder with Hunter missing key players.
“It’s a big blow for us, we will be missing our missing our fullback, halfback and one of our front rowers with prior commitments. But it’s the chance for some other boys to step up on what will be a tough road trip but a great experience for the boys.”
“To have GIO insurance support schoolboy football is fantastic and we thank them for providing this opportunity to these kids” Said Stewart.
Erindale Graduate and Raiders star Jack Wighton said he has great memories of his Erindale days.
“Playing for Erindale was the first chance for me to get some game time when I arrived in Canberra to start playing with the Raiders and I loved the experience,” Wighton said. “It’s a great school and they have a proud rugby league history.”
Another former Erindale star Paul Vaughan said he’ll always have fond memories of his time at Erindale and wished the team luck for Friday night.
“Being from Canberra it was a huge positive for me to be able to go to school at Erindale and play footy for them. I’ll always have great memories of my days at Erindale.” Vaughan said. “I wish the boys all the best of luck for tomorrow.” |

Greater Northern Under 18 skipper and hooker Corey Manicaros on the attack for his side in yesterday's 18-16 last-gasp win in Wollongong. The Tigers now play a Country Championship Final at Scully Park on June 21.

TIGER CUBS SHOW SENIOR SIDE THE WAY
Story & Photo By : Geoff Newling Greater Northern DAILY
GREATER Northern Tigers are hoping the senior side can emulate its Under 16 and 18 sides and make the June 21 NSW Country Championship Finals at Scully Park.
The senior Tigers play North Coast at Morrie Breen Oval this Saturday in a Tier 2 semi-final.
Yesterday the GN Tiger Under 16 and 18 sides qualified for their NSW Country Championship Finals with victories over East Coast Dolphins in Wollongong, the Gary Jones-coached 16s scoring a 28-6 win over East Coast Dolphins and the Matt Parsons-coached 18s sneaking a 16-14 victory with a late converted try to Zac Faulkner.
The two sides had qualified for yesterday’s semi-finals with wins over Southern Stingrays on Saturday.
Parsons was delighted with his side.
“Zac scored with 90 seconds to go and Ryan Holman converted,” Parsons said.
“We’d trailed much of the first half too.
“We didn’t play near as well as we did the day before but it was pretty hard getting them up for today’s game.”
Trailing 4-nil most of yesterday’s first half, Callum Hayne scored just before the break to equalise at 4-all.
GN scored two early tries in the second half to lead 12-4 but then trailed 16-12 as the Dolphins hit back.
Once more the Tigers surged to earn a final berth at Scully Park.
Faulkner, Muswellbrook second-rower Ryan Holman and Uralla centre Jordan Press were outstanding.
The Tiger 18s began their weekend with a dominant display and 32-4 win over Southern Stingrays on Saturday morning.
Parsons was delighted.
“We were pretty good but can still improve a fair bit too,” the former NRL prop said.
“Defensively we were really good but we turned over a bit of ball and made some errors with a few bad options.
“But we defended those mistakes well.”
He thought the Tiger pack was strong, physically, with Zac Faulkner leading the way.
Hooker Corey Manicaros was another to shine while the outside backs also earned a big wrap from Parsons.
“We’re just hoping the senior side can now win their semi final this week and have all three sides at Scully,” Parsons said. |
TIGER U16S INTO FINAL FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR
Story By : Greater Northern DAILY
GREATER Northern Under 16s came through the weekend’s Country Championships in Wollongong successful and unscathed.
The Gary Jones-coached GN side beat Southern Stingrays 30-16 in Saturday’s first-round clash and then accounted for East Coast Dolphins 28-6 yesterday.
With Armidale’s Phil Quinlan leading the way yesterday, the side earned a Country Championship Under 16 Final berth for the second successive season.
GN assistant coach Mark Wilton said the side’s completion rate was outstanding in the first half of yesterday’s semi-final.
“About 90 per cent,” Wilton said.
“So we started well.”
Quinlan, man of the match and the GN players’ player award winner, was backed up by strong efforts from Tamworth’s Harrison Buhler and Kyden Howard.
Jones was ecstatic.
“That’s a real good win.
“Big Phil Quinlan dominated up the middle and was the best player on the field.
“Jake Parker (Muswellbrook) also had a big game at five-eighth but it was a real big team effort.
“We’re real happy now, especially after the 18s scored on the bell to win.
“Now we just need the seniors to win their semi at Wyong next weekend.
“We also came through unscathed without any injuries today so we’ll have every one on deck as long as they get through club games this weekend.”
The Tiger 16s began their weekend with a 30-16 win over Southern Stingrays that was highlighted by an enthusiastic start.
“We did get away to a good start,” Jones said of that first- round game.
“The Stingrays did get back to within 10 but that was on the back of four penalties.”
He thought Kyden Howard was outstanding, the young lock from Singleton taking the side forward with some strong carries.
Armidale’s Phillip Quinlan and Farrer’s Hayden Loughrey also excelled along with Muswellbrook’s Brad Collett.
“I thought Brad changed the game a couple of times with his good dummy-half runs and a couple of long-range tries.
“He scored the first and set up the last for us.” |

Rockhampton & District Junior Rugby League Grand Finals 2014
UNDER 13
Emu Park entered their first RDJRL grand final but showed no nerves to start the game, getting out to an 8-0 lead after 10 minutes through an early try to Nathan Groves.
The next try came from a great long ball from Dustin Munns to Blake Smith on the wing.
After that, Fitzroy’s kicked into gear scoring a good try to Luke Barsby then five-eighth Aaron Moore showed why he is in the Rocky Rustlers with a great individual try to take the lead 12-8.
Barsby scored his second just before halftime to give the sharks a 16-8 lead.
The break was the worst thing for the Fitzroy’s side, after the break the Emu’s hit back when Reuben Hamson dove over, then from a scrum fullback Carl Murray ran the length of the field to score giving Emus the lead again which they never gave up.
Man of Match Carl Murray then scored again to give them an eight point lead and then with a few minutes left Nathan Groves scored his second to give Emu Park their first RDJRL Grand Final trophy 30 -16
Emu Park 30 (Carl Murray 2, Nathan Groves 2, Blake Smith, Reuben Hamson tries; Travis Field 2, Reuben Hamson goals) def Fitzroy's 16 (Try's - Luke Barsby 2, Aaron Moore, Goals - Lleyton Milburn 2)

Cap Coast Brothers were coming into this game after two extra time victories in the semi-final weeks.
Would this be a disadvantage? Well, their start didn’t suggest this when Alex Gibert crashed over when Brothers made too many mistakes and gave away penalties with Troy Richardson converting.
Brothers started their come back and when Lachlan Crow put a deaf little kick through for Liam Grant to score , the teams were all square.
Brothers continued their strong form with Matthew baker crashing over and with Liam Grants great side line conversation Rocky Brothers took a 12-6 lead into half time.
The second half did not start well for the Coast Brothers and Crow sliced through after a mistake giving Brothers White a lead 18-6.
A great backline move saw Rahnee Paipai score out wide for the coast, but that will be the last time they troubled the scorers.
A blind side play by Cap Coast went wrong and Brothers got the ball back and it was Man of the Match Tom Farr that ran 50m to score under the post to give Rocky Brothers White the win 24-10.
Brothers White 24 (Liam Grant, Matthew Baker, Lachlan Crow, Tom Farr tries; Liam Grant goals) Cap Coast Brothers 10 (Alex Gilbert, Rahnee Paipai tries; Troy Richardson goal)

This was a game that defied the norm after a very tight first half that saw Cap Coast Brothers score first through Lachlan Buchanan to take a 6-0 lead.
Brothers hit back right on the buzzer when Cory Armstrong stepped through to level up 6-6 at halftime.
The second half started a try frenzy Buchanan scored his second then Rocky Brothers Noel Rogers scored to lock the game at 12-12.
Buchanan crashed over for his 3rd try which was followed by Rocky Brothers Darcy Connor with a great side line conversion from Sam Murphy to make scores 18-18.
Next, crafty hooker Jacob VanZanden scored from dummy half to give the Coast a lead 24-18, but it was a Sam Murphy try and conversation with three minutes left that tied the game up at 24-24.
A late field goal attempt by Murphy just missed the mark in the last seconds which sent the game into extra time.
Both sides battled away but it was with two minutes left in the second period of extra time saw fullback Carwyn Moon break through from halfway to give the Coast Brothers the lead 30-24. Rocky Brothers through everything at Cap Coast, but their defence was strong enough to hold on for an exciting win.
Cap Coast Brothers won in extra time after the scores were level 24 all at full time.
Cap Coast Brothers 30 (Lachlan Buchanan 3, Jacob VanZanden, Carwyn Moon tries; Carwyn Moon 5 goals) def Brothers 24 (Sam Murphy, Noel Rogers, Darcy Connor, Corey Armstrong tries; Sam Murphy 4 goals)

UNDER 16
After the excitement of the previous game, both Yeppoon & Cap Coast took the field a little late than expected.
Maybe this was the reason for the fractious start when four players were placed in the bin for an altercation.
After they all returned they all concentrated on rugby league and it was Cap Coast that held their nerve and Tristian Darl finished off a very good move to score in the corner.
A Great conversation from Michael Bacon gave them a 6-0 lead which they took into half time.
Half time didn’t faze Cap Coast when Jack White cut through to score in the corner to give them a 10-0 lead then half Zac Close put a nice kick through for Sam Cookson to score and a 14-0 lead.
This was the wakeup call for the undefeated Yeppoon Seagulls and a few mistakes by Cap Coast saw prop Bailey Butler packing at lock from a scrum bust through to score under the posts, then the Seagull side hit their straps, Tycer O’Dell capitalised on Brothers mistakes and cut through to score and bring the score back to 10-14 with about 5 minutes remaining.
Both sides threw everything at each other and with two minutes remaining Harry Grant finished off a back line move to tie everything up and with 30 seconds remaining Man of the Match Tycer O’Dell slotted the conversation from the side line to give the Yeppoon side victory 16-14.
Yeppoon 16 (Tycer O’Dell, Bailey Butler, Harry Grant tries; Tycer O'Dell 2 goals) Cap Coast Brothers 14 (Sam Cookson, Tristan Darr, Jack White tries; Michael Bacon goals)

UNDER 18
The Under 18 clash was the climax of the grand final day – and with many players from both sides finishing their junior rugby league journey, players from both sides were looking for a fitting farewell.
These sides played an exciting 32-26 major semi-final with the score changing multiple times with the Seagulls taking the points.
This game just didn’t live up to the expectations of the semi-final, Brothers came out with a simple game plan and they executed to coach Rhys Chapman’s instructions. Tries to Kadison Armstrong (two) and Parry Boland after a great 40/20 kick lead them to a 12-0 lead at halftime.
Front Rower Elliot Thompson then put the game out side Yeppoon’s reach when he crossed for two tries after halftime to give Brothers a 24-0 lead.
Yeppoon finally hit the score board with a try to Anthony Mouritz, but tries to Brady Mayne and a third to Man of the Match Thompson sealed a 34-6 win.
Brothers 34 (Elliot Thompson 3, Kadison Armstrong 2, Parry Boland, Brady Mayne tries; Luke Rumph 2, Kadison Armstrong goals) def Yeppoon 6 (Anthony Mouritz try; Kalem Pacey goal)

TJRL PRESIDENTS CUP REPORT
Story & Photo By : Tanya Anderson QRL
The cool, blustery conditions didn’t detract from what was a great day of junior footy for the 2014 Presidents Cup hosted by Brothers.
The majority of the games came down to the wire and even included a golden point result in the U13/14 Development Cup, proving these D cup games are very popular and a great concept for the Junior Rugby League.
The TJRL were also very privileged to have the company of life members Doug Anderson along with Bill and Thelma Pollard.
They came along to spend most of the day at the footy with us and presented medallions and trophies to the players and referees, it was an honor to have them attend.
The day started bright and early with an 8.30am kick off with Dalby playing Highfields in the U11’s. This proved to be a fast paced, good quality game with the boys throwing everything into their game with the result going Dalby’s way 18 points to 12.
The under 12 game also ended up closer than was indicated midway through the game with Pittsworth taking the upper hand after Souths scored a quick early try. To their credit Souths hit back towards the end of the second half but Pittsworth’s defence was good enough to hold them out to take the win 32-24.
The U11/12 Development Cup went all Gatton’s way with the boys taking a comfortable win 34-0 over the Brothers Leprechauns. Although the score line didn’t reflect so it was still an entertaining game of footy.
Gatton finished the end of the first round at the top of the ladder in the under 13’s age group but were up against a very determined South’s outfit who ended up coming away with the win 26-18. This was a very good clash and the boys from both sides dug deep, but Souths were able to hold on for the win.
Once again Souths were represented with the U14 boys taking on the Highfields Eagles. This was another game that came down to the wire with the crowd really starting to get vocal, feeling the pressure of a great close game. Both sides delivered great scrambling defence to keep it to a reasonably low scoring affair with Souths coming away the victors 16 points to 14.
What was clearly the game of the day the U13/14 Development Cup went to golden point. The Oakey Bears took on the Valleys Roosters and the lead changed many time making it the most exciting game with the boys leaving absolutely nothing in the tank. With the scores tied up at 26 all the game headed to golden point and with only a minute or two left on the clock Valleys were awarded a penalty and successfully kicked the goal to take the win.
The U15 trophy was contested by the Pittsworth Danes taking on a sizeable Souths outfit. The Pittsworth Boys got out to a great start scoring a try in the opening minutes. It was a good tough encounter between the two teams with some very entertaining tries being scored as you would expect in the U15’s age group.
Although the scoreboard showed Pittsworth were victors 30-16 the boys unfortunately didn’t get to receive the winner’s trophy due to a breach of the interchange rules in the first half. So no winner was declared. This was disappointing finish to a good game but the boys accepted the decision and Souths showed great sportsmanship giving the Danes three cheers. Good to see boys!
The day ended with the much anticipated game with the Pittsworth boys taking on the inform Highfields Eagles. Now with the lights on and conditions very cold the footy was hot with Pittsworth putting in a great performance running in nine tries. Highfields were missing a few of their key players, and although never giving up they just couldn’t contain the young Danes who ran out winners 48 points to 16.

TIGER CUBS SET FOR LAST ONE-STOP COUNTRY TITLES
Story & Photo By : Geoff Newling Northern Daily LEADER
GREATER Northern Rugby League Under 16 and 18 sides are preparing for Country Championship weekends in Wollongong that could be the final time they are played in the one-weekend format.
This weekend’s junior championships will bring together talented Under 16 and 18 divisional sides from NSW Country.
However, Greater Northern Region chairman Barry Pratten said the format would change next year.
“The 16s and 18s will play a Harold Mathews-type competition over seven weeks,” he said.
“The competitions (Under 16 and 18) will feature 10 Country divisions cut into two groups of five.
“We (GN Under 16 and 18) will play the four other teams from the region.
“It gives all the boys a chance to impress and they will be able to select better Country sides.
“All the divisions will play in the pre-season competition during February and March and it will all be finished before we start our various Group competitions.”
He said the new junior divisional format would also be good for referees.
“It will also give more country referees the chance to referee at a higher level and to impress as well.
“At the moment, a lot of the refs aren’t getting that chance.”
It means this weekend’s Country Championships weekend in Wollongong would be the last time that format is run.
“I think it’s going to be better for everybody,” Pratten said.
He also believes the GN Tiger junior sides will compete strongly in Wollongong under their coaches, Matt Parsons (U18) and Garry Jones and Mark Wilton (U16).
“They are good young sides,” Pratten said.
He was also delighted with the performance of the senior GN Tigers and their 12-6 win over Western Rams in the opening Tier 2 Country Championship match at Singleton last Saturday.
“It was a very tough game, dominated by defence,” Pratten said.
The Darryl Rando-coached side, spearheaded by a storming display from Aberdeen backrower Ben Hagan, earned the Tigers a semi-final berth against North Coast at Morrie Breen Oval, Wyong on Saturday, June 14.
Pratten is also the Group 4 president and thought the double-header at Scully Park went off well on Sunday despite the rain.
Group 4 has also programmed another double- header for Scully on June 15 when West Lions play Gunnedah and Oxley Diggers tackle North Tamworth.
“There could be eight games that day,” Pratten said after Sunday’s six-game double header.
“The games will probably go into the night under lights and will probably have to be played on the Sunday.” |

ST GREG'S FORWARDS SEIZE DAY
Story By : ROY LARS & Photo's By : Camden-Narellan ADVERTISER
ST Gregory's College's long history of rugby league success looks set to continue after it edged out Illawarra Sports High School in round one of the GIO Schoolboys Cup at Campbelltown Stadium last week.
St Greg's big forwards were instrumental early, powering up the middle on the back of strong carries and quick play-the-balls.
Illawarra scored the first two tries before St Greg's halfback James Perlowski spotted an opening and backed his pace, scoring a long-range try five minutes before half-time.
That was quickly followed by a try close to the line by hooker Jaydon Sienkiewicz.
Centre Lalotoa Mata'afa converted one of the tries and led at half-time 10-8.
Christopher Debrincat and Ashleigh Nisbet scored second half tries. St Greg's fans helped get them home by being extremely vocal.
The GIO "Most Trusted" man of the match award went to St Greg's lock Mark McCormack.
"All the other forwards get a great roll on and get quick play the balls for me so I can take it up the middle in the later part of the sets," McCormack said after the match.
"It makes my job a lot easier going up through the middle." |

ENDEAVOUR TOO SLICK FOR CHIFLEY
Story & Photo's By : steve monty
Endeavour SHS TSP rugby League played Chifley College in the NSWCHS St. Marys Cup today on the "Field of Dreams"
Endeavour were scoring within the first couple minutes with a try to Liam Crean, Brownie converted & the boiz were off and running.
The Scoreline of 40 -16 was a fair indication of the game where Endeavour dominated possession and were able to put on points almost at will.
Chifley played some good footy which produced points, but you can't beat anyone if you don't have the footy.
Special mention to young Terry Fergo who scored 4 tries, 1 try short of the school record of 5 tries in a game which a\has only happened the once on the Field of Dreams.
Some seroius injuries came from this match with accidental injuries resulting in a broken schnozz & a Hammie
Endeavour get it on again in 2 weeks with the 1st game in this years GIO Schoolboy Cup |

ACADEMY SNATCH WIN IN LAST-MINUTE THRILLER
Story & Photo By : Liam Williams (at Mend-A-Hose Jungle) ENGLAND RL
England Academy 34, France 30
England Academy recorded a dramatic victory over France thanks to a last-minute try from Oliver Gildart at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.
With the scores locked at 30-all, the spoils looked to have been shared until Gildart, the Wigan Warriors centre, stole through on the last play to snatch the win.
England had earlier controlled the first half but not before conceding the opening try through Quentin Quemener.
The hosts hit back strongly and scored three tries of their own through Ash Handley, Mikey Wood and Luke Waterworth, before Quemener scored his second on the stroke of half-time to send the sides in level at the break.
France started the second half as they did the first, scoring five minutes in through Etienne Ferret, but unlike the first half, they kept the pressure on and added a second shortly after through Benjamin Jullien.
England hit back and scored tries through Dave Hewitt and Gabriel Fell to go within two, but France pulled away again when Djamel Remok went over with just over 10 minutes to go.
The hosts then showed great spirit to score two tries in the final minutes through Jack Johnson and Gildart.
England were punished for their sluggish start after five minutes when France opened the scoring as Mickael Goudemand breached the England defence before offloading to Quemener who had a free run to the line.
The try sparked England into action and a nice passing move was completed when Handley went over in the corner to level the scores, with Hewitt narrowly missing his conversion.
However, England were immediately up against it as Will Maher fumbled his play-the-ball and Nick Gregson was penalised for a high tackle.
Alibert opted to kick to goal and his 20-metre penalty sailed between the posts.
The hosts kept the pressure on and Robbie Ward's strong tackle forced an error from Alibert.
A try for Wood followed soon after as the forward spotted a gap in the French defence and pounced.
England scored their third try of the half after a magnificent cross-field run from Toby King before Waterworth spun over the line from dummy-half.
It took France over half an hour to have another spell on top and they made full use of it as Quemener powered over the line to score his second try of the game, with Amine Miloudi's conversion bringing the score to 14-14 at the break.
France started the second half in the same vein they finished the first and a darting run by Ferret through the England defence gave the visitors the lead.
France's momentum showed no signs of wavering as Ferret found Jullien who was left with a simple finish, and Miloudi's conversion gave France a 26-14 lead.
A good move got England back into the game after Hewitt wriggled free of the France defence, and Nick Gregson's conversion brought them within six.
England scored their second try of the half five minutes later after Fell broke free before diving over out wide.
Ward made a goal-saving tackle but England were powerless to prevent Remok going over in the corner straight after.
England drew level with just five minutes left on the clock after Johnson turned on the afterburners before touching down between the posts, leaving Hewitt with a simple conversion.
England then snatched a try with the last play of the game as Jansin Turgut broke through and found Gildart who dived over the line to win the game.

Townsville Stingers are this year's under-18 national champions thanks to a comprehensive 36-14 win against the Sydney Roosters |
DOMINANT DISPLAY SEALS STINGERS' WIN
Story & Photo By : Nth Qld Cowboys Media
An NYC Cowboys-laden Townsville Stingers are this year’s under-18 national champions thanks to a comprehensive 36-14 win against the Sydney Roosters at 1300SMILES Stadium this afternoon.
After clinching the Mal Meninga Cup as Queensland champions a fortnight ago, the Stingers were dominant from the start, especially in the forwards battle, against the SG Ball winners from New South Wales, and eventually scored seven tries to three.
Back-rowers Coen Hess and Jordan Kenworthy both scored doubles, while winger Gideon Mosby-Gela, who opened the scoring by flashing in down the right in the sixth minute, ended up winning the man-of-the-match award for a brilliant attacking display.
Townsville led 18-0 after crossing for the game’s first four tries and only conceded right on half time when Roosters winger Johnny Tuivasa-Scheck found his way over following a kick on the final tackle of the half.
Kenworthy’s first try, a weaving run from 15m out, arrived two minutes after the break and the result was just about secured when he grabbed his second through some soft Roosters defence following a 70-metre dash down the wing by Mosby-Gela.
Winger Richie Munchow bagged the Stingers’ final try off a fortunate rebound to make it 34-10.
Townsville’s starting lineup contained 10 NYC Cowboys, including co-captains Cooper Bambling and Regan Grieve, as well as Mosby-Gela, Kenworthy, Hess, fullback Jesse Pomare-Anderson, centre Sam Smith, five-eighth Ty Carucci, and props Kurt De Luis and Nick Brown.
Hess and Bambling have already made their under-20s debuts in their first year with the NYC program and more are sure to follow in coming weeks.
Interchange forward Tyrone Pritchard is also a member of North Queensland’s under-20s, while Munchow, centre Rhein Frank and hooker Calum Gahan hold junior contracts with the club.
In the under-16s national final, Newcastle scored the last three tries of a see-sawing match to turn a 12-point deficit into a 34-28 victory against Northern Pride.
The Harold Matthews winners from NSW led 16-6 midway through the second before the Cairns-based Cyril Connell Cup champions went on a 22-0 point-scoring spree, including a double to forward Brett Anderson.
However they barely had a touch of the ball in the final 15 minutes as the Knights recovered largely thanks to the combination of fullback Matt Cooper and man-of-the-match Brendan O’Hagan.
The Pride almost snatched a late try after recovering the kick off following Cooper’s second four-pointer.
They were held up over the line and then gave away a penalty for obstruction on the next tackle to allow the Knights to claim the national title.

STINGERS CLAIM NATIONAL CROWN
Story By : QRL Media
THE Townsville Stingers put on an impressive display to claim this year's Under 18 National Final with a 36-16 win over the Sydney Roosters.
Townsville were dominant from the very beginning and came out with strong intent and were nearly over the line in the opening moments, but were held up over the line.
It didn’t take them too long to get on the board however, with speedy winger Gideon Mosby-Gela diving over.
Mosby-Gela proved difficult for the Roosters to handle – with the eventual man of the match making a number of tackle and line breaks throughout the afternoon.
The Roosters forwards came to 1300SMILES Stadium with a formidable reputation – but it seemed like their epic state final win last weekend over Penrith took a lot out of the players, who could not match the power of the Stingers.
Former junior Outback representative Coen Hess was a strong performer for the home side – with the backrow forward crossing for two tries in quick succession. Prop Kurt De Luis then scored a good front-rower’s try – crashing over.
The Roosters were finally able to get on the board when winger Johnny Tuivasa-Scheck flew over to score the first points for his side. They were to be the only points for the Sydney side in the first half, who went into halftime trailing 18-4.
The break did little to halt the Stingers momentum however, with lock forward Jordan Kenworthy joining in on the point-scoring act, crashing over for the first of his two four-pointers.
He scored his second almost immediately after – with Mosby-Gela helping set up the try with another elusive run downfield.
Although down, the Roosters didn’t give up all match and were rewarded when prop Poasa Foamausili was rewarded with a try after diving under Stingers defenders.
However, they could not stop the points keep flowing from the Stingers with Richie Munchow successfully chasing through a kick..
The Roosters scored a consolation try right before fulltime with big prop Shiem Fuimaono going over.
The win capped a great season for the Stingers and their coach Steve Sheppard – with all their key players stepping up when it counted in front of their home supporters.

NEXT GENERATION KNIGHTS CHASING NATIONAL GLORY
Story By : Matt Logue Knights
They're four country boys who've bonded over footy and fun to become best mates.
Meet Brodie Jones (Cessnock), Kurtis Dark (Old Bar), Tom Starling (Kincumber) and Brendan O’Hagan (Berkeley Vale), the next generation Newcastle Knights who have starred in the premiership-winning Harold Matthews side this season.
In the wake of last Saturday's grand final win over Penrith, the Club's first under-16s trophy in 14 years, Knights TV sat down with the foursome to discuss their success, special mateship and Saturday's National Final match-up against the Northern Pride in Townsville.
And it didn't take long to discover that these lads are close friends, on-and-off the field.
"We met each other through the Knights and now we are best mates and we do everything together," O'Hagan says grinning.
"Before our games we always go to someone's house to relax and prepare for the game.
"So if we’ve got a home game, we usually go to Brodie’s place at Cessnock and have a ride around on the motorbikes.
"It's a bit of fun, but it also goes to show the mates you can make from footy and it helps on the field."
There's no doubting these four emerging Knights are tight, so tight in fact they all have their own personally labelled speedos they wear to every single match.
Hooker Tom Starling says the budgy smugglers idea was inspired by Dank, who would always wear speedos on game day.
"Kurtis had speedos and we all wondered why he did," he explains.
"We just wore our skins, but then Brodie jumped onboard and started wearing his old speedos. So we all talked and said we might as well get some budgy smugglers with Knights and our names written on them.
"So we've got these bright red speedos and we always wear them to the game, so they are a bit of a good luck charm I guess."
Dark, a relative of Roosters star Boyd Cordner, can't help but laugh when the special speedos are mentioned.
All jokes aside though, the Old Bar Pirates junior couldn't be prouder to now call his fellow Newcastle players his best mates.
"It was good playing with these bunch of boys," Dark beams.
"Coming from Old Bar I didn’t know anyone at the start, but I’ve got to know everyone really well.
"These boys are probably going to be my best mates throughout life now.
"And even if we separate, we’ll always know each other.
"So it will be great to win the national title, that would be a good thing for the Knights."
While Dark didn't know any of his Knights teammates prior to joining the Club, Starling and O'Hagan are close mates from the Central Coast.
As Kincumber Colts and Berkeley Vale Panthers juniors respectively, the pair fought out some epic battles against each other until they joined forces in the halves at representative level for the Central Coast.
Now the duo are grand final heroes at Newcastle with a chance of becoming the best under-16s side in the country.
It's a realistic prospect that excites Starling.
"We’ve trained six months for this, so it’s a big achievement for the boys and we’ve all enjoyed it," he says.
"We are looking forward to going up to Queensland and hopefully we can get the win up there.
"We’ve definitely got to play our own game, because that’s what we’ve been saying all the way through the comp.
"If we just worry about ourselves, then we have the team to come out on top against any team we play against."
It's a train of thought backed by coach Tony Gleeson, who is excited to take on the Northern Pride for national supremacy.
"It’s going to be interesting," Gleeson says.
"I guess the thing for us, even though we’re relaxed and we’ve enjoyed the grand final, we want to go up there and make the most of it.
"We are not undervaluing what we’ve achieved this year.
"There is a little bit of state rivalry and I’m sure all the boys will be keyed up for it and ready to go."
The majority of Newcastle's Harold Matthews team are local products, including a remarkable 13 players who attend Hunter Sports High in Newcastle.
Gleeson believes this is a testament to the school's focus on league, even including it as an official subject on the syllabus.
"The school has worked really hard to get some guys into the program," he says.
"They are probably touching the footy 100 times more than the other guys not in the program.
"You see that skill level evident when they are at training as well.
"It’s a really good program and it’s definitely helping.
"My mum and dad always said that if rugby league was a subject at school I would have been a straight ‘A’ student (laughs).
"It’s great to see and hopefully we can continue to produce quality footballers into the future."
If the current crop of players at the Knights is anything to go by, then Gleeson will most likely get that wish.
The Knights Harold Matthews side will take on the Northern Pride for the National Title from 1.45pm at 1300SMILES Stadium at Townsville. |
ENGLAND ACADEMY NAME 20-MAN SQUAD FOR FRANCE TEST
Story By : England RL
England have named a 20-man squad to face France in a one-off Test match at The Mend-A-Hose Jungle, Castleford (6.30pm - UK time) on Friday May 16.
England coach John Winder, who oversaw two weekend training camps in Sheffield with his 36-man squad in preparation for the Test, said he had faced some tough decisions in selecting the best 20 players.
“It was very tough, which is a great reflection on the depth of talent we have in this country,” said Winder, who will take his squad into a four-day camp on Tuesday May 13 using the facilities at Featherstone Rovers.
“Injuries played a part but there are a few guys we want to have a look at who are new to the England Academy programme
“We will work hard as a group in camp so that we can see what works and what doesn’t.
It is about getting the players on the same page and honing the aspects on how we want to perform.
“In the last few series the England Youth and Academy sides have done well against France.
They are a little bit of an unknown quantity but you would expect the French to be physical and play with passion.
“We have a few guys who played them two years ago so I would imagine that there will be a few of the same players who played in that series.”
The match represents the first opportunity for the Academy players to impress Winder on the international stage ahead of the eagerly-anticipated two-Test series against the Australia Secondary School Rugby League (ASSRL) in December.
“It is a long way off but the players are genuinely excited about it,” said Winder. “It is a privilege to be able to play Australia at any age group.

CANOWINDRA HIGH SCHOOL V COWRA HIGH SCHOOL
UNDER 14 BUCKLEY SHIELD (Rnd 2)
Story by : editor Canowindra Phoenix
On Friday 2nd May, Canowindra High School took on Cowra High School in Round 2 of the Under 14 Buckley Shield.
We got off to the perfect start with Angus Fisher and Joe Coady scoring early tries, both converted by Joe Coady, giving us a 12-0 lead.
As the first half progressed the boys started to tire and a few gaps started to open up.
We went into the sheds at half time with Cowra leading 22-12.
After the break we again came out firing and put on another two early tries reducing the deficit to 2 points.
As the game went on the depth of the Cowra High School team showed and they won the game 46-26.
Try scorers for Canowindra were Joe Coady (3), Angus Fisher and Justin Said. Joe Coady had 3 successful conversions.
We would like to thank Mr Garry Whatman for coming in off the farm to referee the game.

CRONULLA HS v BLAKEHURST HS
BUCKLEY SHIELD UNDER 14'S
Story By : Cronulla HS
The CHS Under 14's Rugby League team played Blakehust HS in the prestigious
NSW Buckley Shield on 8th April.
Despite a slow start, CHS careered away to a 16-6 lead deep into the second half.
A string of penalties (justified!) allowed Blakehurst to claw their way back to 16 all
at the end of normal time.
5 minutes each way extra time...
A wonderful power set in defence resulted in a turnover, from which Ethan R-H scored.
A goal from Ethan W took our (Cronulla HS) advantage to 6.
With 60 seconds to go, a penalty for not being square in the play-the-ball saw CHS defending on their own line.
A last-chance play too Blakehurst across the line in the corner. 22-20, kick to come ... bell sounds.
Their goal kicker calmly kicked the goal..22-all. First try scorer, Blakehurst HS wins.. 22-all!
A great game, though disappointing, showcased our sporting talent and, perhaps more importantly, how we represent our CHS and our proud traditions. |

JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVE PREVIEWS - GRAND FINALS
Story BY : NSWRL Media
 Newcastle Knights Vs Penrith Panthers
Leichhardt Oval, Saturday, May 10
Kick-off: 12.00pm
Referee: Darian Furner
Broadcast: NSWRL Match Centre coverage available via NSWRL.com.au
Summary :
The Knights head into the Grand Final as favourites after they accounted for the Panthers 40-0 in the regular season however our spies tell us a few of the Panthers big guns were rested by Brett Atkinson that day.
The Knights will face another stern test against a big pack of forwards but they showed against the Bulldogs they aren’t scared to rip in and cut down the opposition big men if they have to.
The Panthers let both tries in on their right edge defence last week and they will need to rectify that issue because the Knights have plenty of strike power out wide in Heath Gibbs, Nicolas O’Meley and Brayden Musgrove.
The key for the Panthers is to cramp the creativity of Knights halfback Brendan O’Hagan.
O’Hagan was instrumental in every try scored last week and his battle with Sean O’Sullivan will go a long way to deciding this match.
Knights Coach Anthony Gleeson will have a simple message for his young chargers. Stop the Panthers hard-running big men and victory will be in sight.
Unfortunately it is easier said than done.
NSWRL MEDIA Prediction:
Get the feeling that we are in for a classic Grand Final here.
We think the Knights will get home but only by the skin of their teeth. Knights by one in extra time.
OurFootyTeam Prediction
Knights will out last the Panthers and win by 12 +
 SYDNEY ROOSTERS v PENRITH PANTHERS
Leichhardt Oval, Saturday, May 10
Kick-off: 2.00pm
Referee: Kieren Irons
Broadcast: NSWRL Match Centre coverage available via NSWRL.com.au
Summary :
These two teams played out a frantic 44-42 match earlier in the Final Series where, at times, both teams looked to have the ball on a string.
The Roosters seemed to have adopted a we’ll outscore you policy for the Final Series because they just keep pilling on the points.
The one thing that may worry Coach Anthony Barnes is they have let in some points as well. Both teams are blessed with immense talent right across the park.
The Roosters boast big, tough forwards and some of the best finishers in the SG Ball competition. Latrell Mitchell has been shifted to fullback for this Grand Final with Travis Edwards getting the nod at five-eighth.
This adds a whole new element of danger for the Panthers as Mitchell is one of the best counter-attackers in the competition.
The Panthers will look to exploit the same attacking edge which produced the majority of their points in their two point loss in the first week of the finals.
Expect plenty of cross-field kicks to head to the wing of Fuimanu Enese.
Enese bagged a double against his opposing winger that day and this won’t have gone unnoticed by Panthers Coach Alex Chan.
NSWRL Media Prediction:
Really hard to separate two high quality teams. We just get the feeling the Roosters have another level to go to. Roosters by 2.
OurFootyTeam Prediction :
Roosters are deadly, they have the best Centres in the world and after a tough start, the Roosters should take control and run away to win by a couple tries

NATIONAL CLUB CHAMPS ON IN TOWNSVILLE
Story By : QRL Media Release
Townsville’s 1300SMILES Stadium has today been confirmed as the venue for the Under 16 and Under 18 National Finals between the Queensland and New South Wales champions on Saturday, May 17.
The matches were originally pencilled in to be played at Bishop Park in Brisbane, but following the results from last weekend’s state finals which saw two northern teams win their respective state finals, the Queensland Rugby League has settled on Townsville.
“With the Northern Pride and Townsville Stingers qualifying for these two prestigious matches, it makes sense to play them in North Queensland,” QRL Managing Director Robert Moore said today.
“It’s a great fit for the game and a perfect opportunity to profile top level rugby league in the north.”
The National Finals will be played before the National Rugby League game between the North Queensland Cowboys and Sydney Roosters.
Moore praised the Cowboys for their proactive approach.
“The Cowboys recognised early on that there was a wonderful opportunity to bring the games to Townsville to showcase some of the country’s best young talent in front of their passionate northern fans,” Moore said.
“We can’t thank them enough for getting on the front foot and making their facilities available. It’s also important that we recognise the early assistance of the Norths Devils, who were preparing to accommodate these matches as well.”
Cowboys general manager of football Peter Parr said his club was thrilled with the way “everyone worked together”.
“It’s a great result for the region to have two North Queensland teams on the big stage before an NRL game,” Parr said.
“Our club is proud to be able to play a part in bringing it together.”
The staging of the National Finals in Townsville follows on from last weekend’s successful event in Cairns which saw the Cyril Connell Cup and Mal Meninga Cup state finals played before the Rivalry Round match between the Northern Pride and Mackay Cutters.
Queensland Under 16 champions the Northern Pride will play the winner of the Harold Matthews Cup final between the Newcastle Knights and Penrith Panthers.
Townsville Stingers will meet the winner of the SG Ball Cup match between the Sydney Roosters and Penrith Panthers. Both of the NSW matches will be played this Saturday at Leichhardt Oval.
Saturday, May 17 – Townsville
1.30pm – Gates Open
1.45pm – National Under 16 Final
3.20pm – National Under 18 Final
5.15pm – NYC game

Northern PRIDE win the 2014 QRL Cyril Connell Cup |
PRIDE STUN IN CONNELL CUP WIN
Story By : QRL Media
Photo By : Maria Girgenti Madcap Photography
RIDING on a wave of home support, the Northern Pride have claimed a 14-12 win over the Townsville Stingers to claim this year’s Cyril Connell Cup state title.
It was a hard-fought win for the unfancied side, who kicked a penalty goal in the final minute of the match to claim the victory and now – a chance to press for the national championship.
The first time the Pride had ever reached a state grand final – the Pride didn’t let a poor start to the match get them down; fighting hard in the second half to get themselves into a winning position.
For the Stingers it was a crushing end to their Cyril Connell campaign, having gone through undefeated in all their past matches – including a 44-12 thrashing of their grand final opponents in round 3.
Townsville looked like they were going to continue their dominance over their northern rivals, scoring easily in the opening minutes thanks to winger Lachlan LaRosa.
However – as proved to be the case for the whole afternoon – they were unable to convert their tries – leaving the door open for the Pride.
Following their opening try, they continued to pile the pressure on the Pride and soon scored another two tries to go out to a 12-0 lead.
On the back foot and comparatively inexperienced in finals football – the Pride were able to get on the score board through the quick Quinlyn Cannon with two minutes left in the half. The try was converted and the home side went into the shed 12-6 done, but with the confidence they could come out firing in the second half.
It was a much more settled start got Pride side that came out to start the new half, and their defence that let them down in the first half could not be faulted.
They held their opposition scoreless and – with just over 10 minutes to go in the match – scored via front rower Gabrial Bon. The conversion by skipper Jake Clifford was successful, drawing scores level to 12-12.
The pressure of the situation told on both sides, as both tried everything to break the deadlock.
However, as the Pride attempted a field goal – the Stingers gave away a penalty; with Clifford calmly slotting it over for the two points and ultimately – the state championship.
