Geared up: The St Paul's College Rugby League team are primed to play against St Francis Xavier at Energy Australia Stadium, Newcastle on Friday |
SCHOOL BOYS PRIMED FOR ULTIMATE FOOTY BATTLE
Story By : Shellie Brennan
THEY achieved one of the biggest upsets in the history of the Arrive Alive Rugby League Competition and St Paul's College are keen to keep the momentum going.
The team pulled off an incredible upset win over former Arrive Alive Cup Champions Terra Sancta College in their second Tier B match of the competition last month.
The local lads defeated Terra Sancta 12-10 at Verge St Oval. Big front row forward Brendan Organ was the star of the game. He punished the defence and continually charged at the opposition forwards.
The halves combination of Mitchl Picker and Jarrod Lipscombe was outstanding and fullback Liam Mecham was safe under the high ball.
Matt Scott scored one try and kicked two from two.
The team now progress to the final 32 in the Arrive Alive Cup and will play St Francis Xavier, Hamilton on Friday.
The game will be played at Energy Australia Stadium, Newcastle, at 1pm.
St Paul's will be out to seek revenge as their opposition knocked them out of the Arrive Alive competition last year, when they were in the top 64.
St Francis Xavier has a student population of 1400 and only has year 11 and 12 students.
Friday's game is the Tier B final and the St Paul's boys will show the same determination and raw passion that has got them this far, a feat no other team from St Paul's has achieved.
The team would like to thank the community for bearing the elements and supporting them in the rain last month.
And the team should know the whole of the Macleay Valley will be cheering for them on Friday.
If St Paul's wins the match they will face Endevour Sports High in the next round.
This achievement completes a successful couple of months for the college.
Last month the 13-year and 15-year teams won the Hastings Region Country Rugby League Gala day.
The 15s winning all four games without having a point scored against them.
The 14-year team competed in the Cochrane Cup Team and travelled to John Paul II College Coffs Harbour.
They fought out a tense 26 points to 20 win after trailing 6-20 after five minutes of the second half and will now advance to the next round. |

Ben Picker was selected in the Australian U15 Rugby League team |
PICKER THE BEST OF THE BEST
Story & Photo By :
AFTER representing NSW in the combined high school side Ben Picker (pictured right) has been chosen as the hooker for the Under 15's Australian rugby league side.
Picker made a huge impact on selectors after he was initially unable to play the first game of the championships in Adelaide due to a virus.
Four members of the team were ruled out and isolated from the rest of their team mates for about three days.
But the youngest of the Picker brothers made a fast recovery and knew he had to be at his best to qualify for the Australian jersey.
With no games actually played in the green and gold jersey only the bare minimum 13 players were chosen.
They have to be the best in their position to be named in the side, and on the last day of the championships Picker was named Australia's best hooker for the Under 15's.
"I was really happy, I thought the QLD hooker was pretty good," said Ben.
Ben's father, Grant, said his youngest son was, "over the moon with his selection." |

MCMILLAN’S SECOND SHOT
Story By :
Red Bend Catholic College rugby league talent Alex McMillan might have missed out on selection in the Australian Secondary Schoolboys team but the 17-year-old will have another chance next winter when he will still be eligible for selection in the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges outfit.
McMillan was named in the NSWCCC under 18s squad this year as a replacement forward after representing NSWCCC's Southern zone at selection trials at Bass Hill last month.
The year 11 student travelled with NSWCCC to Townsville last week for the four-day Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League (ASSRL) Championships, for four matches against rival state and public school sides.
The championships wrapped up on July 16 with 18 players named in the national schoolboys team for a tour of New Zealand later this year.
Four NSWCCC players were named including Daniel Mortimer of James Sheahan College, Orange.
Jason Baitieri (Oakhill College, Castle Hill), Kieran Foran (Marist College, North Shore) and Greg Waddell (St Dominic's, Kingswood) were also selected.
McMillan had game time in all four matches for NSWCCC and was named in the starting team for the final match due to injury to a team mate.
NSWCCC met New South Wales Combined High Schools first up and went down 22-10.
The next day they lost 14-10 to Queensland, who later dominated the Australian squad with nine players selected.
Catholic Colleges met Combined High Schools again in the semi-finals and lost 22-16 but scored a 44-16 win against CAS on the final day.
McMillan was accompanied to the championships by Red Bend Basil house coordinator Steve Hooper, who was also manager of NSWCCC under 18s.
Hooper said McMillan gained valuable game time in the front row and second row for NSWCCC.
McMillan was one of four Red Bend students to play in the NSWCCC trials for Southern alongside Brad Graham (Parkes), Zac Merritt and Michael James Hodge (both Forbes).
Blake Baxter and Todd Graham trialled in the under 15 division but no Southern players were selected. |
Endeavour Coach Mr. Jeff Hardy said "yeah, they are a good side, they had a few of their boys missing today too"
Matraville have now became the new St. Mary's Cup Champions after posting a strong 36 - 24 win over an almost full strength Endeavour Sports High School, who have won this Elite schoolboys competition for the past 3 years.
With a few player to come into the Matraville squad, they will also be strong contenders for the University Shield and why not, the Arrive alive Cup too.

FARRER CLEANS UP
Story By : Grant Robertson
FARRER High made a clean sweep of the Country Rugby League Cup regional finals in Tamworth yesterday and will now represent the region at the northern NSW finals in Coffs Harbour.
The green and gold sides dominated all three age groups at Minor League Park and will now face the best sides from the north and central coasts and the northern rivers regions for a place in the State finals.
The Farrer under 13s, 15s and open sides all went through unbeaten.
"The best teams won," CRL development officer Jamie McCormack said.
"It's good for the Farrer school.
"They dominated but they didn't have it all their own way.
"The other sides competed really well and it was a good day of rugby league."
Farrer has been successful in the Country Cup before.
They have been to the State finals on a number of occasions and have won the under 15s crown before.
"Farrer will represent the Greater Northern region well at the northern NSW finals," McCormack said.
One of the highlights of the day was the open clash between Farrer and Coonabarabran.
Coona gave Farrer a scare before the green and golds won 12-4.
Another was the appearance of NSW Country players, who took time out from their ARL Quad Series preparations to present the winning sides with their trophies.
"It was good to have the Country boys come down and present the trophies at the end of the day," McCormack said.
"We appreciate that and I understand the Farrer boys are going to reciprocate by cheering the Country boys on
on Saturday."
Teams from Inverell, Gunnedah, Glen Innes and Narrabri High schools and O'Connor Catholic College also
competed in the regional finals.
The northern NSW finals at Coffs Harbour are on August 1 with the State finals at Dubbo a fortnight later. |

CANOWINDRA NOW WESTERN REGION LEAGUE CHAMPIONS
Story & Photo's By :
Canowindra Public School's open rugby league team became the Western region champions in the Westmont Shield as they defeated South Dubbo 18-4 at The Oval on Friday.
Canowindra Public's team comprised boys from Years 4, 5 and 6 while South Dubbo's team was chosen mainly from Year 6 boys with over 750 students across the school. Canowindra Public has about 180 students.
Canowindra Public reached the Western region final after wins over Cowra, Mulyan, West Bathurst, Cooerwul from Lithgow and Condobolin. These are all schools much bigger than Canowindra.
The Canowindra Public Tigers started cautiously as they gauged the strength of the South Dubbo side who had won the Peachey Shield competition at Dubbo earlier in the week.
Gradually the Canowindra side gained the upper hand, led by the triumvirate [look it up boys] of Curtis Hughes, Jayden Brown and Simon Whatman, who tackled tenaciously and ran aggressively.
They were ably backed up in the forwards by Tim Wythes, Harry Whatman and Dean Wilson, with Dean in particular having a strong game as each hit up gained many metres and each tackle brought a South Dubbo player to a stop.
Rohan Toole and Bailey Cain were the little generals in the mid-field while Bradyn Cassidy enjoyed the diversity at centre and Regan Hughes was the rock at fullback.
Canowindra Public's first try resulted from constant pressure as Harry Whatman broke the South Dubbo defence with a strong hit up which finished up under the posts. Bradyn Cassidy converted the try and Canowindra Public led 6-0.
The onslaught continued as Canowindra piled on more pressure and tackled anything that dared to run.
If South Dubbo breached the first line of Canowindra's defence, there was always another Tiger there to bring the attacker to a halt with Regan Hughes tackling two runners around their ankles in near perfect tackles.
It was big brother Curtis who broke through the Dubbo defence and ran 25 metres to score. Alex Willson converted the try and Canowindra Public went to the break 12 points ahead.
After the break, Canowindra's concentration lapsed a little and Dubbo South got a four-pointer back but this one chance was all they would get as Canowindra Public regained the upper hand.
The Tigers third and final try was a backline passing spree as the ball went from Rohan Toole to Bailey Cain to Alex Willson to Brayden Cassidy who broke the line and scored with Kurt Tidswell and Kye Reid still on hand in support.
Dean Wilson kicked his first ever conversion for a full time score of 18-4.
The entire team is Regan Hughes, Kye Reid, Bradyn Cassidy, Alex Willson, Kurt Tidswell, Bailey Cain, Rohan Toole, Dean Wilson, Harry Whatman, Tim Wythes, Simon Whatman, Curtis Hughes, Jayden Brown, Jared Zahra, Robbie Wiegold, Zac Whitehead, Mat Fisher and Ben Edwards. Barry Traves is the team coach and has done an outstanding job of getting the best out of this team.
Canowindra Public now goes on to State Championships, where they compete against the remaining 10 teams across the NSW, each one a winner in their own region. Everyone wishes the Canowindra team all the best when they represent Western region at the next level. |

COAST BOYS EXCEL AT NSW SCHOOLBOYS U11 CARNIVAL
Story& Photo By : Ross Johnston
Regional teams from all over NSW converged on the Cudgen Leagues Club grounds in early June to battle it out for supremacy... and several of our local Central Coast boys were in the thick of it.
The Sydney North Region Public Schools Team featured Daniel & Jacob Saifiti, Scott Drinkwater and Josh Forbes from Terrigal, Wade Hannel and Kruz Corbett from Woy Woy, Nicholas Hynes and Lachlan Bouillir from Umina, Ryan Bell from Wyong, Harvard Mau from Erina, Luke Sharpe from Toukley, and Harry Watkins from Kincumber.
The NSW Polding Catholic Schools Team featured Jake Nelson and Noah Johnston both from the Ourimbah Magpies.
Both teams finished 4th in their respective pools and had to battle it out in a play off for 7th and 8th position.
This was a very tight game with the Polding team just edging out Sydney North 6-0.
There were some very big 11-year-olds on display at this carnival and some fabulous rugby league was played by some very talented kids.
To give an indication as to the toughness and closeness of the competition, in the pool rounds Sydney North actually beat the eventual finalist North West Region and the Polding team came very close to beating
the eventual champions Sydney West but went down 10-6 right on the bell.
All of the Central Coast boys are to be congratulated for the way they conducted themselves during the carnival and the spirit of cameraderie they showed toward each other.
The photograph shows the Central Coast contingent shortly after the finish of the Sydney North vs Polding encounter.

THE FIGHT IN THE ST PAUL'S COLLEGE "UNDERDOGS" FOOTBALL TEAM HAS CERTAINLY BEEN UNLEASHED.
Story By : Shellie Brennan
The team, made up of 14 to 18-year-olds has defied the odds time and time again and yesterday they proved they can match it with the best.
St Paul's footy team faced their biggest task to date, going head-to-head against Terra Sancta College in the Arrive Alive Cup, Tier B, semi-final.
Constant rain fell throughout the game, but despite the wet weather both teams ball control was phenomenal.
With the whole school cheering them on St Paul's took command of the first half, leaving the Terra Sancta boys in shock.
Mitch Picker and Matt Scott each scored a try. Scott's personal tally was eight points as he converted both tries.
At half-time St Paul's had opened up a handy lead, 12-4.
The second-half was nail biting football. Terra Sancta attacked St Paul's line looking to score on many occasions, but St Paul's stood solid in defence and never gave their opposition an inch.
In the dying minutes of the match Terra Sancta crossed the line and converted to bring the score closer 12-10.
When the full time bell rang shortly after the St Paul's fans breathed a sigh of relief and despite not scoring in the second half they won.
You could not wipe the grin off each St Paul's player or fan.
This is an outstanding result for team, who through sheer grit, determination and good old country spirit gave it to their city counterparts and came out victors. |

YOUNG BLUE: Ben Picker is following in his brothers footsteps after being selected to play for the Under 15 New South Wales side in the Australian Championships. |
ANOTHER PICKER MAKES THE GRADE
Story By : Krisi Williams
BEN Picker of Bigga has been picked to represent New South Wales in the State Under 15 Rugby League side.
Ben played hooker for the Southern NSW team in Toronto three weeks ago against six other sides before he was chosen to represent NSW at state level.
Not only was he picked to represent the Blue's he was also awarded 'Player Of The Series'.
Since then he has been training with the state squad and went into camp for the Blue's on Sunday.
On Wednesday night he will play a test match against the Queensland side before he flies out to Adelaide on Friday morning for the Australian Championships.
The championships will be played over a period of one week with his first match being on the Sunday.
Ben will be playing for the NSW Combined High School side.
In Picker's group he will come up against two Qld teams, the ACT side, and the NSW Catholic Colleges representative side.
In a different pool Victoria, South Australia, Northern territory and Western Australia will battle it out.
Selections for the Australian squad will be announced by Friday June 29 and Ben his hopeful he will have the chance to wear the green and gold jersey as hooker.
Ben is not the only Picker to have been selected to play for NSW.
Three years ago brother Michael was also given the opportunity after playing for the NSW Combined High School's side.
The two brothers are the only two league players that have made it to this level from Crookwell.
His eldest brother Joe has been playing both First Grade and Premier League with the Canberra Raiders from the start of the 2007 season.
Joe has also pulled on the Blue's jersey when he played the curtain raiser in the Under 19's for the State of Origin in 2006.
Ben's league career looks to be sailing considering he only started playing five years ago in the Under 10's.
He currently plays for the Goulburn Stockman under 15's side and at the beginning of the year joined the Canberra Raiders development squad with the hope he will go into the Harold Matthews squad with the Raiders in 2008. |
DENHAM’S COACHING ROLE
Story By : Dennis Driver
Bellingen High School Physical Education teachers Peter Denham and Declan Horan are set to play a crucial role in the New South Wales campaign to take out the coveted Australian Opens Schoolboys Rugby League Championships to be played in Townsville next month.
For the first time Peter Denham will coach the Opens in what is one of the toughest junior rugby league competitions. Declan Horan will fill the role as team manager.
"I'm thrilled to have been selected as coach although I'm also a little nervous about the encounter", said Coach Peter Denham.
"I have coached the Under-14's and Under-15's for the past two years but the Opens is a different matter.
"Many of the players are already playing in the Jersey Flegg competition and are just a step away from first grade in the NRL competition."
Peter Denham is well known to local rugby league supporters. He played as a centre in the last Bellingen side to win the Group 2 Premiership in 1999.
"We've spent a lot of time recently checking out our opposition and we have some really talented young players, including Sawtell winger Kevin Gordon.
"We go into camp in Sydney on July 1 and I will only have three days to put the boys through their paces", said Peter Denham.
"I will be concentrating on patterns of play and hopefully we will have no major injuries to our side." Team manager Declan Horan says organising the 20 member squad is proving a real task. "It's a lot of work but at the same time it is really rewarding", said Mr Horan.
"We have a balanced squad and for the first time in years we have a strong contingent of country players in the side. "Last year New South Wales finished third and I'm hopeful that this year we can improve on that and perhaps even win the title as Australia's best.
The test series will be played in Townsville between July 9 to 14. |
ST. PAULS COLLEGE SHOCK FOOTBALL WORLD
Story & Photo's By L Robinson, St. Pauls College, Kempsey &
St. Paul’s College Kempsey have achieved one of the biggest upsets in the history of the Arrive Alive Cup defeating Terra Sancta College from Schofields in Western Sydney 12 points to 10 at Verge Street Stadium in Kempsey on Monday 25th June.
The game was played in wet conditions and the St. Paul’s team took full advantage highjacking their more fancied opponents with physical defence and good ball control.
Big front row forward Brendan Organ was the star of the game continually rattling Terra Sancta with punishing defence and vigorous charges into the opposition forwards.
Micthl Picker and Matt Scott scored St. Paul’s tries and Matt Scott was successful with both conversions.
The halves combination of Mitchl Picker and Jarrod Lipscombe was outstanding for the home team and fullback Liam Mecham was safe under the high ball and made several line breaks when chiming into the backline.
The team now progress to the final 32 in the Arrive Alive Cup and will play St. Francis Xavier, Hamilton in what will hopefully be a televised game.
This victory completes a very successful week for St. Paul’s College Rugby League.
On Tuesday 19th the 13 Years and 15 Years Teams from St. Paul’s won the Hastings Region CRL Gala day, the 15’s winning all four games without having a point scored against them.
On Thursday 21st the 14 Years Cochrane Cup Team travelled to John Paul II College Coffs Harbour and fought out a tense 26 points to 20 win after trailing 6-20 after 5 minutes of the second half and will now advance to the next round of this competition. FARRER KAYOED IN CUP
Story By : Samantha Newsam
FARRER will be directing its attention towards the University Shield after squandering a half-time lead and bowing out of the Arrive alive Cup in rain-sodden Maitland yesterday.
The Tamworth school was beaten 24-14 by All Saints College in their Tier B round one match at King Edward Oval – the third venue for the match – to end its stay in the competition.
The script though was writing a different story at half-time with first-half tries to Sean Russ and Kurt Resch and a Dominic Cower conversion giving Farrer a 10-6 lead at the break.
But that didn't last long with All Saints scoring two quick tries to grab an 18-10 lead just nine minutes after half-time.
The first of those was a "freakish" effort, Farrer coach Gus Comi said.
"It was from a kick and the ball bounced on its end and away from the fullback," he said.
"Then around the 15-minute mark we had four sets of six at the line and couldn't convert."
It was a common theme for Farrer and one that also bit them late in the game after Scott Blanch had crossed for their third try midway through the half.
"It was 18-14 with three minutes to play and they scored at the death," Comi said.
"We had a number of sets at the line (late) but couldn't get over.
"We knew we were in for a tough time and they took their opportunities – played mistake-free footy."
"We made two mistakes in the game and they led to two tries."
Comi said on the whole the defence was good and, while assessing a loss, did see some improvements.
"We certainly improved our front-on defence and our counter-attack was good. We just need to fill in the gaps," he said.
"The difference was that they won the battle on the ground, in terms of the quick play the balls. That was the only area they really beat us."
He said hooker Seb Swain was his side's best and he also made mention of Pat Hunt and Josh Dutton.
All Saints will now go on to play the winner of the game between Oakhill College and Holy Cross College Ryde, while Farrer has a week to regroup before its Uni Shield regional final match-up with Inverell. |

FARRER BELTS BRAVE THS
Story By :
A FIELD goal by Tamworth High's Josh Scharkie probably brought the biggest cheer at Scully Park yesterday but it was it was only a consolation in the 74-1 University Shield loss to Farrer High.
Farrer ran in 14 tries, including three to starting wingers Pat Hunt and Dominic Bower, to get their Uni Shield campaign off to a good start.
But the green and golds didn't have it all their own way, with THS providing patches of solid resistance.
"They were great," Farrer co-coach Gus Comi said of the THS boys.
"They tried hard and tackled well.
"To keep us to 28 at halftime was an excellent effort.
"They had a green army running at them and when one stops, another one comes, but they tackled well so that's a good sign."
With NSW CHS reps Angus McHattan and Seb Swain and regular five-eighth Jake Hawkins out, several players stood up.
Scott Blanch backed up from the CHS titles, where he also gained CHS selection, off the bench while Hunt was also playing his fourth game of the week.
He started on the wing and scored Farrer's first try before moving into his more accustomed role in the back row for the last of the match.
"Pat Hunt scored three tries and played very well," Comi said.
"I thought Josh Dutton played really well at lock and also Kurt Resch, playing out of position, controlled five-eighth really well.
"Paul Lambell also had a good game and Dom Horne up front, all the pack really."
Cameron Mitchell and Jacob Wheeldon also claimed two tries each.
At 68-nil, THS decided a field goal may be the only way to get on the scoreboard and Scharkie slotted one over.
Unfortunately THS still fell 73 short and Farrer progresses.
Farrer also has an Arrive Alive Cup inter-regional match to come in two weeks against the Newcastle regional winners, All Saints Maitland or St Francis Xavier College.
"We're trying to get a trial game before then," Comi said.
"Probably against Hunter Sports High."

Sawtell young guns, Luke Uikelotu and Kevin Gordon, have both been selected in the NSW CHS rugby league teams. |
HELPING BOYS GET A PIZZA THE ACTION
Story By :
IF you were looking for an excuse to grab a pizza on either or both of the next Monday nights, then Eagle Boys at Toormina may have just given you the perfect excuse.
To help Sawtell rugby league players Luke Uikelotu and Kevin Gordon get to the national CHS championships, Eagle Boys have promised to donate $1 from every pizza sold over the next two Mondays to help the pair out with their expenses.
Uikelotu has been selected in the state under 15s team which is travelling to Adelaide in mid-June while Gordon, who has again been selected in the open?s team, will be spending the first week of the July school holidays in Townsville where he gets to pull on a sky blue jersey.
Both recently wowed selectors when representing Northern NSW in the state championships and it was at a dinner after these championships that the NSW teams were announced.
As Gordon has been selected in representative teams before, he managed to take it all in his stride but for Uikelotu, hearing his name called out was a huge buzz.
"They read out the 20 names that were selected and as the names went on and I wasn?t called, I doubted myself and though that I wasn?t going to get picked," the 14-year-old said.
"When I heard my name I was really happy. My teammates were pretty happy for me too."
What made the Toormina High student?s effort even greater is that he normally plays in the centres but was selected as a second-rower.
For Gordon, as much as he?s looking forward to again representing his state and taking on the Queenslanders, it?s visiting somewhere new that is exciting him.
"I want to see what it?s like up there and see how different it is." |

NSWRL General Manager Geoff Carr thanked all the groups for their continued support of the game, and welcomed their participation in Rugby League’s Centenary year celebrations in 2008.
Mr Carr encouraged the bodies to submit expressions of interest to the Australian Rugby League in order to become more involved in what shapes as the game’s most important period since its establishment in Australia in 1908.
“The Affiliate bodies keep grass roots rugby league running,” Mr Carr said today.
“We owe a lot to our volunteers and it’s great to see these organisations continuing to participate in our game.”
In all, a total of $220,000 was allocated to the following NSWRL Affiliate bodies:
NSW Combined Catholic Colleges, NSW Combined High Schools, NSW Primary Schools Sport Association

COLLEGE BOYS HIT MARK
Story By Barry Hildebrandt
SCHOOLS LEAGUE: Tues 3 th April '07 Creative fullback Brad Marks is one of four Dubbo Senior College players selected in the Western Area Open side to play North West at Coonabarabran on Wednesday, May 2.
Both Western Opens and Under 15s teams were selected after trials held at Peak Hill.
Marks will be joined by prop Jake Josephs, second-rower Andrew Madden and replacement Ben Josephs from Dubbo in the 15-man squad to be coached by Tony Tilburg from Blayney High School.
From the Coonabarabran game Greater Western teams will be selected to attend the NSW CHS trials at Myuna Bay at Newcastle on May 21-23, leading into NSWCHS teams for the Australian Schoolboys Championships.
Three Dubbo players have made the Under 15 Western side - Brad Spencer (Dubbo Senior College) has been named in the centres, Josh Merritt (South Campus) at five-eighth and Steve Harris (Dubbo Senior College) in the second-row. Ben Gregory from Mudgee is the coach.
Schools rugby league convenor John van der Reyden from Peak Hill Central School said the Western selection trials created some good football.
"The 15 years game between Eastern and Western Division was very even with both teams scoring four tries," van der Reyden said.
"Then in the Opens game Eastern scored six tries to three and once again the selectors had a hard job picking a squad because of the talent on show.
"I would also like to compliment the efforts put in by the two referees for the games, Chris Salcole and Willy Barnes."
Under 15s scorers: (Western) Josh Merritt (Dubbo South), Bobby Read (Peak Hill Central), Riley Cape (Narromine) and Eric Fernando (Delroy Campus); (Eastern) Andrew Mendes (Bathurst), Jackson Coote (Orange), Jesse Jenkins (Canowindra), Trent Lay (Orange).
Opens scorers: (Western) Isaac Dargin (Condobolin), Ben Josephs (Dubbo Senior Campus), Aaron Denzel (Cowra); (Eastern): Lee McClintock 2 (Cowra), Brent Seager (Bathurst), Cameron Guihot (Canowindra), Nathan Mossman (Cowra), Matthew Clarkson (Mudgee).
Special guests at the selection trials were Craig Young from the St George-Illawarra Dragons, Ray Montgomery (a life member of Australian Schoolboys RL) and Steve McLellan (CRL Academy).
"Craig Young spoke to the boys at the conclusion of each game, congratulating them on their efforts and giving an insight to what is required to reach higher levels in the game," John van der Reyden said.
"Dragons gear and shirts from the NSWRL Academy with compliments of Wayne Portlock were presented by Craig to players adjudged top performers on the day.
"Those players being Josh Merritt, Jackson Coote, Jesse Jenkins and Steve Harrison in the under 15s and Opens players Aaron Denzel, Sterling Seijka, Andrew Madden and Lee McClintock." |

STUART WANTS MORE BIG GAMES IN THE COUNTRY
Story By : Barry Hilderbrandt (DUbbo Liberal) Photo ourfooty media.
07/02 Australian coach Ricky Stuart and Dubbo Rugby League president Ian O’Neill agree that more National Rugby League (NRL) games should be played in the country areas.
O’Neill was one of more than 40 people who listened to Stuart speak to junior league coaches and others at Apex Oval in Dubbo on Thursday night.
From the outset Stuart said he was a huge supporter of country football and O’Neill was quick to ask why more games involving the NRL clubs are not played away from the city areas.
“I think we should be pushing for our best trials to play in the country areas, games close to the start of the competition when the coaches will be using them as full scale selection trials,” Stuart said.
“Most of the NRL clubs are struggling with their funds, crowd numbers are down and there isn’t a reason that I see why we can’t play more games in the bush.
“I would also like to see the money raised from the games pooled and shared by those who miss out on the games.” On this point, O’Neill was quick to disagree.
“Ricky, I don’t agree about that especially when you have progressive groups like here in Dubbo who work hard and produce results, then in your plan, would have to serve out that money to other clubs,” O’Neill said.. Learn More |
FARRER SEVEN HONING THEIR SKILLS WITH ACADEMY
25/01 FARRER Memorial Agricultural High School is well represented in this year's Wests Greater Northern Academy squad with seven talented players from Tamworth and beyond gearing up for big games in a few weeks' time.
Tamworth's Kieran Fisher, Scott Blanch, Josh Dutton and Shem Grieve, Manilla's Jake Hawkins, Walcha's Angus McHattan and Guyra product Demielle Landsborough are all in training for clashes with the Wests Tigers and Newcastle Knights' academy sides.
McHattan is one of the few big men in the squad and one of few Walcha rugby league talents but is enjoying the GNA program. "There's not many of us," he said. "We concentrate on the ruck a lot more. "It's stuff that you don't get to do elsewhere.
"I'm looking forward to playing the Knights. "It should be good." Unlike McHattan and some of the other Farrer boys, Grieve is yet to play First XIII football for his school but the West Lions three-quarter is improving through his work with the academy.
"It keeps you fit during the off-season," he said. "It should be good when we go back to school or to our clubs.
"I'd like to try to make the first side at school and then maybe go to Sydney to play next year.".. Learn More |
