2007 BALMAIN TIGERS DEVELOPMENT SQUADS
Congratulations to the following players for making the 2007
Development squads. Please pass on the details of training to the successful players. Club coaches and officials should be proud of these players making the squads as well.
If anyone would like to discuss the selections, feel free to contact David Kelly on 0412 160 014.
With every team that we choose, there are unfortunately players who have to miss out.
This year we had four officials selecting the squads and the decisions were unanimous amongst the selectors.

YOUNG GUNS ROAR ON U/14 LEAGUE TOUR
Story By : Kris Karas TWT
BALMAIN’S all conquering U/14 Young Guns rugby league team have returned from a successful four match tour of northern NSW and Queensland.
Under the coaching of experienced mentor Ken Stapleton, the Tiger cubs showcased their emerging junior talent with standout performances from half back Joseph Touma, prop Atu Politoni, fullback Alex Kerti, hooker Grant Bunch and winger Sam Williams.
The Young Guns impressed country officials with their courage and skill to register victories over Group 1 (14-10), Ballina Seagulls (28-10), Southport Tigers (60-0) and Southport Invitational (22-10).
A highlight was defeating Ballina for the Clae Webb Cup, a trophy that perpetuates the memory of the former Balmain Jersey Flegg half back who collapsed and died on August 5 last year while playing for Erina Eagles in a Jim Beam Cup fixture against Cabra-matta at Cabramatta Sports Ground.
Touma, a bright prospect from Concord-Burwood United, picked up the best and fairest award for his sharp displays while livewire hooker Bunch collected the Coach’s award.
Hard running Politoni (Best Forward) and attacking dynamo Kerti (Best Back) also picked up awards along with elusive winger Williams (Players’ Player).

DAVID BROOKS TO COACH U/16 CUBS
Story By : TWT
BALMAIN Tigers have appointed legendary forward David Brooks as their U/16 Harold Matthews Cup coach for the 2008 NSWRL junior representative series.
Brooks, who was inducted into the Tigers Hall of Fame earlier this year, replaces the retiring Stuart Stanton who has stepped down after a three year stint.
He’ll be assisted by premiership-winning Holy Cross U/15 coach Paul Jarvis.
The affable Brooks has already tasted coaching success at Junior Cup level. Back in 1994 he guided the Balmain Jersey Flegg team - featuring top forwards Glenn Morrison and Troy Perkins, centre Michael Withers and fullback Chad Halliday - to a premiership victory over St George at Parramatta Stadium.
MEANWHILE Dundas Shamrocks and Five Dock RSL players dominate the Balmain U/14 Young Guns representative squad for their northern NSW and Queensland tour.
The Shamrocks, who defeated Five Dock RSL in this year’s Balmain Junior League Grand Final, form the nucleus of the 21-man squad.
Experienced mentor Ken Stapleton will coach the team who depart this week for a six day tour that includes matches against Ballina Seagulls and Group 1 at Kingsford Smith Oval in preparation for the Tweed Heads Cup at Southport.
The Tigers’ U/14 rep squad is: Kyle Lovett (captain), Alex Kerti (vice captain), Ray Bechara, Grant Bunch, Jelal Edmonds, Fai Ese, Matt Hassett, Sean Hawken, Ayden Jacovides, Ryan Kelly, Andrew Kirwan, George Moussa, Jermain Nader, Atu Politoni, Curtis Sironen, Morrie Toum, Daniel Vasek, Joseph Touma, Chris Vlahos, Sam Williams, Tom Brennan-Ware. RHINOS RULE ROOST IN JUNIOR NURSERY
Story By : THe Weekly Times
HOLY CROSS Junior Rugby League Club rule the roost after a memorable season in the 2007 Balmain Junior League competition.
The Rhinos are celebrating one of their finest campaigns on record after annexing both the Senior and Junior Club Championship trophies; the U/8 Benny Elias Shield as well as premiership titles in the U/11, U/12, U/15 and U/17 Div 1 age groups.
It has been a year to remember for Club president Stuart Stanton, secretary Gary Hinchliffe and the Rhinos fraternity who also supplied a batch of talented young footballers to the Balmain Junior Cup representative teams.
Promising cub Drew Laing received the Jack King Trophy for the U/16 Player of the Year while top forward prospect Matthew Mizzi,17, took out the Jan Carroll Memorial Award for his stand out peformances with the Rhinos’ champion U/17 outfit.
“Our success this year is due to the hard work put in by officials, coaches and players - both on and off the football paddock” said president Stanton.
“We’ve built the club from nine to 18 teams over the past four years by developing our young talent and assembling some of the finest coaches in the district.”
“To win the Club Championship is a great effort - an achievement we’re extremely proud of” he added.
DARREN McLEAN coached the Holy Cross U/17s to an impressive 30-16 victory over Concord-Burwood in a ‘Clash of the Titans’ at Leichhardt Oval.
Led by NSW U/17 lock Matt Hyland, the Rhinos produced a slick second half display to sink the Wolves and capture the Bill Ballard Trophy.
Hyland was supported by forwards Matthew Mizzi, Stuart Bousfield, Shaun Vengoa, Aaron Woods, Sebastian Vourlos and hooker Mitchell Bergin and backs David O’Neill, Ben Kamionka, Brett Peacock, Pat Politoni, fullback Ryan Isberg, Scott White and Daniel Jeffery.
The Wolves - virtually a team of 16 year olds - put up a great battle with top games from half John Nicholas, centres Moses Pangai and Junior Rogica and forwards Paul Mareko, hooker Ajay Vaivaka, Will Brealey, Chris Said, Taniela Vaivaka and Will Tuima. |
