HOLY CROSS COLLEGE RYDE U 15 2009 MCS CHAMPIONS
Story & Photo BY :
Holy Cross College are the 2009 U/15 MCS champions after defeating the highly fancied St Gregories College Campbelltown 20 – 0 at Cabramatta Sports Ground today.
After a narrow win over the much bigger Patrician Brothers Blacktown 16 – 10 in last weeks Semi-Final the Holy Cross boys turned up to Cabramatta today hoping that they would at least be competitive in the Big One, they surprised everyone except their Assistant Coach Laurie Cameron who knew that the boys had what it takes to win a Grand Final, steely defence.
He instructed the boys to get 2 & 3 in each tackle on the much bigger and stronger Greg’s forwards and to run into gaps, they certainly did that and managed to pile on 14 points in the first half with 3 classy tries.
Greg’s threw everything at them in the second half but could not crack the impressive Holy Cross defence.
The great thing about this Holy Cross team is that each and every player puts in, this age group has been short of forwards each year but the boys have learnt to compensate by working as a team.
Keeping the undefeated St Gregs team scoreless was a monumental effort and the coaching staff can be proud of themselves for the way they have turned this team around this year.
Special thanks to Coach Mr Phillip Gibney, players that stood out were 2nd rower Dane Horne, Captain & 5/8 Luke Brooks, Centres Max Dimarco & James-Ray Khoury, Fullback Mason Farrell, Lock Nathan Milone, Halfback Mitchell Moses, Prop Siata Esua and impact player Michael Min who tackled anything that moved when injected into the game.
Best for St Gregs were Captain & 5/8 Ben Hughes and centre Ryan Benecke.
The boys will now focus on getting the same result with Balmain Harold Matthews squad next year, “Go the Tigers" |
JUNIOR ROACH ROARS FOR RYDE CUBS
Story By : The Weekly Times
HOLY Cross College Ryde Open age rugby league team broke an 18 month drought in the Metropolitan Catholic Schools competition when they registered a 30-18 victory over St Dominic’s Penrith last week.
It was Ryde’s first regular season triumph since the infamous 2005 campaign - a just reward for a tremendous team effort.
Players to shine were strapping prop Liam Roach - son of former Tigers and Kangaroo legend Steve ‘Blocker’ Roach - who showed courage and stamina against the rugged Penrith forward pack.
Liam, who represented Balmain in this year’s NSWRL S.G Ball Cup series, made 19 hit ups and tackled strongly in a trojan-like performance.
Other Holy Cross cubs to impress were the hard working Matthew Hyland (16 tackles/13 hit ups); Matthew Mizzi (15 tackles/9 hit-ups), Dane Goenhoefer (15 tackles/6 hit-ups) and Liam Monroe (16 tackles/1 hit-up.

CROSS BREAK DROUGHT IN INSPIRING WIN
Story by : By Shane Chapman - Holy Cross Media Manager
It’s been about a year and a half in the making but Holy Cross College finally put last year’s dismal MCS season behind them to record their first regular season victory since the infamous 2005 campaign.
Holy Cross put on a scintillating first half display and held off a late charge to defeat St. Dominic’s Penrith 30-18 last Thursday afternoon.
Some great individual performances included Matthew Hyland (16 tackles/13 hit-ups), Matthew Mizzi (15 tackles/9 hit-ups), Dane Goenhoefer (15 tackles/6 hit-ups) and Liam Monroe (16 tackles/1 hit-up), but the standout was the tireless work of prop forward Liam Roach.
Roach’s 7 tackles but more importantly his 19 hit-ups showed tremendous stamina and enormous courage against an aggressive Penrith forward pack.
In the end it was a great win for HCC.
Full credit to all the players for showing the right attitude to their football, it is wonderful to see them confident and enjoying their footy.
Like the old cliché, they’ll take each game as it comes, one week at a time. Hopefully it’s the start of a brighter season. |

2007 Arrive alive Sevens
Story By :
HCC performed very well against some very good schools at Western Weekender Stadium in this years Arrive alive Schoolboys Sevens Competition.
Coach Tim White was generally pleased with the teams performance throughout the day. " the team did really well today and it looks like it might be a solid year if we can take that into the upcoming MCS SEASON".
The first game HCC blitzed Patrician Brothers Blacktown 28 - 14.
The boys confidence was rocketing after their victory over Pat's and enjoyed the opportunity for a rest as the next game was against everyones favourite easybeat team, the bye.
In the next round HCC encountered a well drilled Hunter SHS. Both teams deserved to win this fast paced game with Hunter holding out repeated HCC attacks to win 24 - 30.
This final game knocked HCC out of the finals, but Holy Cross will get better and give a few competitions a bit of a shake in '07.
Just for the record : Patrician Brothers went on a scoring frenzy in the final 5 minutes to hammer Endeavour SHS 32 - 10 in the final of the Arrive alive Sevens Shield.
Westfields SHS defeated St. Dominics 26 - 24 in a much tighter game to win the Arrive alive Sevens Plate.. Ac7's here |
