TRY-FECTA FOR FIRST NRL NATIONAL SCHOOLBOY CUP GAME

On Wednesday 15 May the Erindale College Rugby League side took on the Victoria University College team (Melbourne) in their first game of the 2019 GIO Cup.

Leading by example with several strong runs, captain Tristan Eldridge inspired his team with prop Fai Tuifelasai being the dominant forward on the field, scoring three tries. It proved to be a fast-paced, hard hit out with Erindale winning, the final score being 54 -10.

In what was a very physical game there were several anxious moments where players launched themselves at their opposition in both defence and attack with great determination.

The Erindale team, with coaching by Matt Adams and Steve Babic leading up to this game, were disciplined and determined after the best possible start. The kick-off, taken by centre Jackson Owen, rebounded off the goal-post crossbar, was regathered and after some short passes saw Fai cross for the first of his three tries in the first 30 seconds of the game.

The other centre, Aston Naidu not only scored two tries but had his radar boots on kicking six conversions, amassing 20 points of the final score.

Post-game Victoria University College team coach, ex-Erindale teacher and Raiders u20 coach, Tony Adam made the comment that he knew it was going to be a tough game as they were playing Erindale at home and his team is in a rebuilding phase, particularly given the Melbourne u18 competition consists of only four teams.

This makes it difficult for the players to get a lot of consistent game time against quality opposition, made even harder with the loss of some of the more experienced players through injury. “But no excuses.

Erindale came out hard and kept it up throughout the whole game.

We were towelled up by a better side on the day” he said.

Erindale coach Matt Adams said he was “so proud of how the squad performed yesterday and how great it was to see the support shown by the school and community.

I know our students felt very proud to be a part of, and representing, the whole Erindale community. We get to do it all again in week 7 with hopefully some lead up matches by our girl’s league squad and possibly feeder high schools as well.”

Congratulations to all involved and best wishes for the next GIO Cup round. Bring on Week 7!

TWEED SEAGULLS COME OUT ON TOP IN THRILLING FINAL

There was end-to-end action at BMD Kougari as the Wynnum Manly Seagulls and Tweed Seagulls went head-to-head to see who be the state champions in the Auswide Bank Mal Meninga Cup.

While it was an entertaining game with plenty of highlights, in the end it was Tweed Seagulls who won 28-24.

Venue: BMD Kougari Oval

The Tweed Seagulls got the game off to a fast start with a try to Reece Walsh in the fourth minute. The try came off the back of some individual brilliance from centre Xavier Coates who broke away from within his own side of the field, running almost the length before passing back inside for his fullback.

They were in again only three minutes after when Ediq Ambrosyev dove over after he picked up the scraps off Walsh high kick that proved too hard to handle for Wynnum.

However, Wynnum worked their way back into the game and in the back end of the half they had their reward when Zane Edmonds scored. It came from some good work for his backline, with Reece Hoffman – who was a handful for the Tweed defence all afternoon – drew in the defenders before passing to his outside.

Max Plath got their next try moments later with some quick work at the Tweed try line.

However, the half belonged to the southern Gulls when in the shadows of halftime, when some great play for the forwards was rewarded with a try to five-eighth Kade Hill.

After a clever offload, Juwain Compain raced through middle of the field before passing to the quicker man to score and close out the half for an 18-8 lead.

In the second half, the home side came out firing with a renewed intensity in their defence. They were up in the face.

Tweed then responded in kind with some big hits, and it was them who scored first when Coates reached up higher than everybody else to bring down the ball and score.

But Wynnum Manly refused to go away, with firstly Hoffman and then Braden Whittaker scoring in quick succession to bring the growing green and red crowd to their feet.

It tense was palatable and the action was intense.

It seemed that a big run from forward Solomon Torrens had sealed the match for the Tweed when put his head down, tucked the ball under his arm and ran in to score in the 62nd minute.

Wynnum Manly however never gave up and we had a grand stand finish when Ethan Malt was over in the final minute of play.

The pressed again when went flying down the left hand sideline in the final second of play, but desperate Tweed defence saw them push the threat out in touch before celebrating the win.

The Tweed Seagulls will have to refocus this week before they take on Illawarra in the National Under 18 final.

ILLAWARRA WIN ABSOLUTE THRILLER TO CLAIM SG BALL PREMIERSHIP

ourfooty media

Illawarra halfback Jayden Sullivan turned on a masterclass in the UNE SG Ball Grand Final at Bankwest Stadium on Saturday 4 May to get the Steelers home 34-23 in a thrilling match against the Manly Sea Eagles.

The scores were locked at 22-all with only eight minutes to go when Manly halfback Jamie Lawler landed a field goal from right in front of the posts to give the Sea Eagles a slender lead.

The Steelers refused to give in and benefitted from a freakish play after Illawarra five-eighth Talatau Amone put a kick through that rebounded off a Manly defender and was regathered by Steelers winger Tyrell Sloan. The next play Amone took on the line to put his side back in front 28-23.

There was still plenty of time left on the clock for the Sea Eagles but the Steelers ensured it would be their day when fullback Treigh Stewart sold the defence a dummy before racing away to score and spark wild celebrations behind the posts as players piled on top of each other.

"It's an unreal feeling to get the win," Amone said. "It's the best feeling of my life so far.

"Full credit to the boys, if they weren't there I would not have scored that try.

"We knew they were going to be tough and big in the middle but we just had to be tight and that's what we did. Listen to the coaches plan, follow it and look at what the outcome is."

The grand final lived up to expectations after both sides finished in the top two positions on the table but had failed to meet in the regular season after being posted on different sides of the draw in the 17-team competition.

The Steelers got off to the perfect start after halfback Jayden Sullivan put a deft grubber kick through for Aaron Schoupp to pounce on and score the opening try of the game.

Sullivan missed the conversion but more than made up for it after laying the groundwork for a spectacular 80-metre try. The Steelers No.7 found a gap in the Manly defence and sprinted upfield before picking up Schoupp in support who in turn passed back to Sullivan to finish it off.

The Sea Eagles needed something special to spark them into life and five-eighth Joshua Schuster provided it when he spilt the Illawarra defence before racing away to score underneath the posts and help reduce the deficit to 10-6.

The Steelers took charge again after prop Blake Dowel powered his way over the line from close range but the Sea Eagles stayed in touch after fullback Kaeo Weekes finished off a backline move to leave them trailing 18-10 just before the break.

Manly closed the margin again after Sione Fainu powered his way over the line before Sullivan took on the line again to score and extend the Steelers lead to 22-16.

"We just play with eyes up, we don't guess, we all know each other," Sullivan said. "We had a rough start to the season but to come out on top is just amazing.

"It was a risky play (for my first try), I didn't back myself with speed. I should've just taken the tackle but it came out good.

"I'm absolutely amazed. Without these boys I'd be nothing. Just because I'm captain doesn't mean I'm above anybody, we're just one team."

Ben Trbojevic displayed all the talent of his older brothers and Brydens Lawyers NSW Blues, Tom and Jake Trbojevic, when he busted the line before popping a pass away for Weekes to streak away, lock the scores up at 22-all and set the scene for a grandstand finish.

NEWCASTLE CROWNED HAROLD MATTHEWS CHAMPIONS

ourfooty media

Newcastle centre Fletcher Myers came up with some quick thinking and some even quicker hands to produce a stunning piece of play in the UNE Harold Matthews Cup Grand Final that put the Knights on the path to victory against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

The Knights won the match convincingly in the end 28-8 but it could have been an entirely different story until the match changed complexion in the second half. With the Knights clinging to a 12-8 lead and showing plenty of desperation in defence against a spirited Bulldogs outfit, they found themselves on a rare attacking raid at the other end of the field.

Bulldogs fullback Pharell Zimmerman defused a bomb safely and dropped to the deck before Myers came up with the play of the day. The Knights centre stripped the ball off him while he was laying on the ground before turning around and strolling over to score.

"I just rushed up there, and when I saw it was me and the fullback, I just thought I'm going to take this and try a one on one strip and I pulled it off... bit unusual nowadays, don't mind a one on one strip," Myers said.

"I'm really proud of the boys, the fans won't know but a few of the boys are battling a few injuries out there... they're pretty tough."

It gave the Knights some breathing space at 18-8 and they would add two more tries to Christopher Veaila and Myers again to put the result beyond doubt and seal the decider.

The Knights finished the regular season on top of the table and started the Grand Final with plenty of intent after halfback Jonah Pezet picked up Oryn Keeley on an angled run to barge his way pst the defence and score the opening try of the game.

The Bulldogs gave away a penalty shortly afterwards for a dangerous throw and the Knights took full advantage after hooker Noah Nailagoliva scooted out of dummy-half to score and help extend the lead to 12-0.

The Bulldogs looked like they had their hands full against the monster Knights pack but managed to regroup and strike back after halfback Joseph O’Neill forced a repeat set before centre Paul Alamoti palmed off a defender on his way to the line.

The Bulldogs had another opportunity after Iverson Teo popped a superb around the corner pass for put Trieste Winitana into space but he was unable to evade the last line of defence. They didn’t have to wait long for another opportunity with Alomati getting a late offload away to help pave the way for O’Neill to score and reduce the deficit to 12-8 at halftime.

ILLAWARRA WIN THE TARSHA GALE CUP

ourfooty media

Tiana Graham produced two moments of brilliance in the Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup Grand Final to help the Illawarra Steelers to a 24-12 win over the Newcastle Knights at Bankwest Stadium on Saturday.

Graham stepped up for the first time during the second period when the match was in the balance at 10-4 after latching on to an offload from captain Maddison Weatherall and then stepping and jinking her ways past six defenders on her way to the line.

She backed up her heroics in the final period after the Knights had scored to close the gap to 16-8 to sprint through a yawning gap in the defence before finding Mikayla Kidd in support who crossed the line to give the Steelers some breathing space again.

While Graham was responsible for the memorable moments, it was Weatherall who led from the front after terrorising the Newcastle defence with several telling runs as well as coming up with a number of skilful offloads to keep play alive.

"It was pretty cool to get the win in our last year," Weatherall said.

"After losing last year in the semi's and now, to get to the Grand Final and win it it's the best feeling ever. "

"The Knights were strong, they always are, we just had to come out stronger and do our job."

Illawarra came out of the blocks firing on all cylinders and it was a barnstorming run from Weatherall which laid the platform for the opening try of the match with Olivia Vale touching down in the corner for a 4-0 lead.

Things went from bad to worse for the Knights shortly afterwards when a cross field kick from No.7 Joeli Morris missed the target and landed in the arms instead of Teagan Berry who raced 70 metres to plant the ball under the posts.

The Steelers had a 10-0 lead and while the Knights had their opportunities during the first period , they were unable to capitalise against a team that finished the regular season with the second-best defensive competition in the league.

Caitlan Johnston, who was one of the Knights’ best players in a losing side, finally gave Newcastle fans reason to cheer early in the second period when she used her size and strength to barge her way over the line and reduce the margin to 10-4.

The Knights kept the game alive when Johnston threw a sublime cut-out pass for Carissa Harrison to score in the corner and reduce the margin to 20-12 before Berry showed some individual brilliance and speed to score the final try of the Grand Final and put the result beyond doubt.

"We played really well and got the win in the end, with our toughness and dedication at training,” Berry said.

“I just tried to back myself, I’ve been told to back myself, just doing what I can being a winger”.

“We’ve put all our work into training and we’re doing everything to the best of our ability and just came out today firing and ready for the win”.

DAVID V GOLIATH - “HEATHCOTE HIGH CREATE HISTORY”

After a 4 year implementation the Heathcote HS Rugby League High Performance Unit (HPU)- Open Rugby League team made history today by winning the Southern Sydney Branch of the Australian Schoolboy Trophy.

Usually dominated by the highly fancied Catholic teams, Heathcote HS proved that it's not the size of the dog in the fight but the size in the fight of the dog.

Heathcote competed in the NRL Australian Schoolboy Trophy Competition Southern Sydney branch of the competition which includes Government, Independent and Catholic schools who fall under the umbrella of St George Dragons, South Sydney Rabbitohs and Cronulla Sharks.

Heathcote's culture of never giving up was clearly evident today. The pool they had was difficult with recent champions Dela Salle Caringbah, Marist Bros Kogarah. They also had powerhouse George's River College Oatley.

THE POOL RESULTS WERE AS FOLLOWS:

Rd 1- beat GRC Oatley 8-6
Rd 2- beat Dela Salle Caringbah 10-4
Rd 3- beat Cronulla HS 20-0
Rd 4- beat Marist Kogarah 14-4

But after the 20-0 win over Cronulla, Heathcote hit a hurdle during the match.

They lost 2 players to concussion which left us with 1 interchange for the remainder of the tournament.

However they finished undefeated in our pool and progressed into the semi final.

The semi- final for Heathcote was against highly fancied Aquinas College.

After a tough grinding match they won 8-4. The attitude over 'not letting your mate down' proved to be the difference and old school doggedness won the game. Now into the final.

The final was against Marist Kogarah who Heathcote had disposed of earlier in the day. But in a grand final..... anything can happen.
The game started with Heathcote HS slow out of the blocks. Marist ran to an early lead of 10-0.

However the intestinal fortitude of the Heathcote team kicked in again an we hit back just before half time to be 10-6 down.

Comments from the opposition bench planning victory celebrations inspired the Rams to click into another gear.

They ran out winners 12-10 and will now move into the Sydney semi final stage of the competition on August 7.

The coach, Craig Holmes, who was part of the Matraville Sports HS rugby league juggernaut, which was ranked the best rugby league school in Australia for several years, has been privileged to experience some extremely special moments over the years.

This includes wining the Arrive Alive Cup in 2007 and the Australian Schoolboys Championship with NSWCHS in 2016 amongst other achievements. However, with the way that these players never gave up, dug in made the coach Craig Holmes and the school proud and was a testament to them and their families. Special mention to the parents who supported the boys today.

LADDER LEADERS TO MEET IN GRAND FINAL

The Illawarra Steelers and Newcastle Knights - who finished the regular season in 1st and 2nd respectively - will now meet in the Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup decider after securing preliminary final wins on Saturday morning.

The Steelers kicked off first against the Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Stadium, with the home side scoring two early tries through Ally Beaufils and Emily Curtain to lead 8-0. The Steelers then hit back in the next 10 minutes through Maddison Weatherall and Teagan Barry to level the scores.

By the halfway mark, the Tigers scored three more quick-fire tries for the largest deficit of the match at 24-8. However, the last half hour saw the Steelers mount a comeback to earn a 34-24 victory.

The Newcastle Knights continued proceedings in another high scoring contest by defeating the St George Dragons 36-28 at St Marys Leagues Stadium.

Coming back from a two-try deficit, Jorja Holden opened the scoring for the Knights and finished the game with a hat-trick. Joeli Morris, Ashlee Russell, Olivia Kernick and Caitlan Johnston rounded out the try scorers for the away side to book a place in next week’s grand final.

FEAGAI BROTHERS STAR IN PRELIMINARY FINAL WIN

Illawarra Steelers pair, Mathew and Max Feagai, have shared the try scoring spoils on the way to a 26-22 win over the Parramatta Eels in the 1st preliminary final of the 2019 UNE SG Ball Cup.

The right-edge attacking duo were threatening from the outset with a try apiece in the opening 10 minutes for a 10-0 lead. By the 30-minute mark, the Eels fought their way back to 10-all with tries to Albert Etuati-Favaae and Viliame Penisini.

The Feagai brothers added two more four-pointers between them early in the secon- half. However, in a nail-biting final stanza the Eels responded through Samuel Hughes and Tyler Field, with consecutive Sean Russell conversions giving them a 22-20 lead for the first time in the contest.

Needing one try to win with two minutes remaining, Max Feagai found his way to the line again to cap off his hat-trick and seal a grand final spot for the Steelers.

In the 2nd preliminary final at Campbelltown Stadium, the Central Coast Roosters couldn’t hold out a fast finishing Manly-Warringah despite a Riley Meyn double and a 12-4 halftime lead. The Sea Eagles scored 20 unanswered points in the 2nd half to earn a 24-12 win and a meeting with Steelers in the 2019 UNE SG Ball Cup decider.

GLORY AWAITS FOR TOP DEFENSIVE TEAMS

The Newcastle Knights (82 pts conceded) and Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs (108 pts conceded) finished the regular season with the two best defensive records. Both sides will now face off at Bankwest Stadium for the UNE Harold Matthews Cup trophy after securing victory in their respective grand final qualifiers on Saturday afternoon.

The Knights earned the first spot in next week’s grand final with a 20-6 win over the Penrith Panthers at St Marys Leagues Stadium. The minor premiers scored the opening 2 tries of the match through winger Charlie Thompson and no. 13 Lachlan Crouch.

Winger Jecii Pritchard scored the sole try for the Panthers in the 23rd minute, bringing the halftime score to 10-6.

Mitchell Henderson got over try line just two minutes into the 2nd half to increase the deficit, while Thompson scored his 2nd try at the 56-minute mark in what was another solid defensive display from Newcastle.

In a very different contest, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs earned a narrow yet high-scoring 36-30 win over a dangerous South Sydney outfit at Campbelltown Stadium.

Despite conceding a 2nd minute try to Rabbitohs fullback Joseph Suaalii, the Bulldogs scored 4 tries in 11 minutes, including an Iverson Teo double for a 22-6 lead. South Sydney brought the margin to 4 points at the break with tries to centre Luca Ace-Nasteski and second rower William Taliai.

With both sides scoring two converted tries in the 2nd half and a 59th minute penalty goal to Trieste Winitana, the Bulldogs were able hold on for a 6-point win.

Now that the Knights and Bulldogs are on a grand final collision course as the best defensive teams, and if the adage of ‘defence wins premierships’ is anything to go by, the two sides are sure to be in a for gritty affair.

GALLANT SHARKS BOW OUT IN TARSHA GALE

ourfooty media

The Tarsha Gale Sharks have bowed out of the finals race, beaten 32-26 in a thriller by the Newcastle Knights in their sudden-death semi final clash at Kogarah Jubilee Oval on Friday.

After an indifferent start to their season, the defending Tarsha Gale champions found some form in the later part of the season, winning their last three games to qualify for the finals.

A win over the Panthers in week one gave the Sharks hope of a repeat of their 2018 success, only to succumb to a Newcastle try with just two minutes of their semi final remaining, their season coming to an end just short of a Grand Final qualifier.

It was a heartbreaking way to go out for the Sharks girls, but with a squad largely made up of newcomers, the season could be viewed as a great success considering the new female talent which was unearthed.

The finals clash with the Knights looked to be one-way traffic in the early going, with the Newcastle girls scoring four tries in the first 20 minutes as opposed to just the one four-pointer from Kelly Gilmore from the Sharks.

Behind 18-6 the Sharks lifted a gear and following tries to Jamie Chapman and Maddison Higgins-Ashby the scores were level at 18-all, before the Knights crossed to again take a four point lead.

Showing great character the Sharks evened the scores once more through Lynda Howarth try, setting up a frantic last period of what had developed into an enthralling contest.

With both teams keeping the scoreboard operator busy the Knights went ahead, a second Higgins-Ashby levelled the scores at 26 with five to go, however the Sharks couldn't hold on, the game winner coming in the last two minutes of the game.

The Sharks were gallant in defeat against a Knights team which had finished the nine-round regular season second on the ladder with eight wins.

Some of the Tarsha Sharks will push up to train on and learn with the Harvey Norman Women's Premiership team, with a number eligible to return to the Tarsha Gale competition in 2020.

The Tarsha Gale Sharks continued to keep their best form for the back end of the season in beating the Panthers 18-12 in week one of the finals.

The defending Tarsha Gale champions, the Sharks began slowly in 2019, losing their first six games, however three wins in a row to qualify for the finals, then the victory over Penrith, has them growing in confidence every week.

Playing a team who had beaten them during the regular season, the Sharks began strongly, opening the scoring in fourth minute when Jamie Chapman scored.

She converted the try for a 6-0 lead.

In a game where the Sharks never trailed, the Panthers made it 6-4, before a second Chapman four-pointer made it 10-4.

The Panthers wouldn't go away, bridging the gap with a try, before the Sharks went six ahead once more when Kelly Gilmore crossed.

The Sharks would seal the win courtesy of an Alexandra Weir touchdown, their fourth of the match, pushing their lead out to 18-8, with the Panthers crossing for a consolation try in the final minute.

SEA EAGLES SECURE FIRST PLACE ON THE UNE SG BALL LADDER

The Manly Warringah Sea Eagles UNE SG Ball side have secured a 66 - 10 victory over the Rabbitohs today to finish first on the ladder for the 2019 season. They secured first place following the 56 point win with Cameron Brown opening up the scoring.

Halfback Jamie Lawler was impressive in the first half after scoring a double, with five-eighth Josh Schuster and second rower Ben Trbojevic both scoring two tries.

Jack Birt also played a significant part to the win after converting eight tries; with Tapu Tuipulotu helping out with a conversion in the 53rd minute.

The Sea Eagles finish with seven wins in total for the SG Ball season and will be hard to beat in the finals.

PANTHERS RECORD BIGGEST WIN FOR THE SEASON

The Penrith Panthers UNE SG Ball side have just missed a place in finals after needing a 65- point win but fell short by 13-points.

The Panthers dominated with the highest win of the SG Ball season defeating the Pirates 70 – 18 at Charlottes Pavilion.

Panthers’ centre, Sunia Turuva was impressive scoring a hat-trick with Connor Mason scoring converting nine of the 13 tries.

TEN TRIES SECURE NEWCASTLE KNIGHTS WITH A 44-POINT VICTORY

The Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup Newcastle Knights side have finished the regular season with a 44-point win over the Parramatta Eels at St Johns Oval.

With the Knights scoring a total of ten tries throughout the game, winger Ashlee Russell impressed scoring four.

A consolation try came in the 19th minute for the Parramatta Eels through Tahlia Alexander but the Knights were unstoppable.

THUNDERBOLTS FIND FORM TO RECORD SECOND CONSECUTIVE WIN

The Victoria Thunderbolts UNE SG ball side have won back-to-back, to finish the season with two wins over the Pirates and Magpies.

It’s a little too late for the Thunderbolts who found form for the past two games in the regular season finishing 14th on the ladder.

However they have lots of positives to take away from their final two games.

Teamwork and persistence definitely paid off these last two weeks but struggled early on to get wins on the board.

The Thunderbolts finished strong in their match against the Magpies, scoring five tries in the second half to win 36-14.

Sione Finau and Jermaine Tui both scored two tries to assist their side to victory.

Pita-Will Purcell was also at his best for the second week in a row, after converting five of the six tries to assist defeat the Magpies.

ST GEORGE ILLAWARRA DRAGONS BOUNCE BACK

The St George Illawarra Dragons Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale side have bounced back after last week’s loss against the Steelers, to a 64-10 victory over Indigenous Academy.

The win has boosted them up to fourth place on the ladder for the final regular game of the season, after a total of six wins altogether this season.

Second rower Filomina Hanisi and centre Mareva Swann both put on a show after scoring hat-tricks.

Sereana Naitokatoka played a huge role and assisted her side to victory after scoring two tries in the first half time as well as converting eight of the eleven tries.
YOUNG SHARKS FINALS BOUND

Story By : Sharks Media

At Mascot Oval it was the Matthews Cup and SG Ball Sharks confirming their places in the finals, before the Tarsha Gale girls beat the Bulldogs at Belmore to also book a spot in the playoffs in a dramatic last round of matches on Saturday.

While their 26-10 against a committed Dragons side wasn't perfect for the Matthews Cup side in seeing them finish the season in sixth position, the SG Ball Sharks were forced to get the calculators out after beating St George 26-12 in their round nine match.

From there is came down to for-and-against, with the Panthers playing the winless West Coast Pirates needing a huge win to sneak into the eight and despite beating the Perth-based side 70 to 18, it wasn't enough to leap frog the Sharks who ended the regular season 12 differential points to the good of Penrith in eight place.

As for the Tarsha Gale Cup Sharks, the girls again displayed the marked improvement they have made since the early rounds of the competition in beating the Canterbury girls 32-6 to qualify for the finals.

Jamie Chapman was outstanding for the Cronulla side, scoring inside the first minute in an impressive four-try performance. Zali Hopkins also crossed for try tries in the win.

After a slow start, the Tarsha Sharks won their final three games and finishing the season in seventh, with a match against the sixth-placed Penrith Panthers awaiting them in week one of the finals.

Back at Mascot Oval and it was the Matthews Cup Sharks who ran into a St George side who while having little to play for, made the Cronulla boys work for their win.

The Sharks fell behind 10-8 early in the second half, before lifting their game and coming home over the top, two tries in the final five minute possibly flattering the under-16’s Sharks but at the same time confirming what was a crucial victory.

Fullback Kristian Dixon scored two four-pointers and kicked two goals in the Sharks win.

Then finally in an SG Ball clash where nothing short of a victory would have qualified them for the under-18’s finals, the Sharks scored early through Thomas Rodwell, then Kade Dykes, took a 22-0 half time lead and from their the result was never in doubt.

The only unknown was by how many the Panthers could beat the Pirates and when the margin wasn't quite great enough the Sharks would live to fight another day.

In next week’s finals the Tarsha Gale girls play the Panthers, as do the Matthews Cup Sharks, while the Cronulla SG Ball squad face the Canberra Raiders.

Game times and venues will be communicated when they become available.

ANDREW JOHNS CUP: WESTERN RAMS BEAT TIGERS 44-4

THE Greater Northern Tigers' 16 Andrew Johns Cup campaign has come to an end at the hands of the Western Rams.

The Rams dominated the under-16 semi-final in Foster on Sunday, recording a 44-4 victory.

Defending the Cup from last year, the Rams led 30-nil at half-time after dominating the start of the game after receiving early and questionable penalties, achieving territorial dominance and producing smart and strong running.

The Rams led 6-nil after just five minutes via a converted try to Parkes lock Finnley Nielsen.

Dubbo fullback Braye Porter then finished off a good team attack to dive over under the posts, for a 12-nil lead.

Parkes five-eighth Kyle Mawhinney then sliced through after Porter's kick return - setting up a long break and try by winger Brandon Hamilton.

When Lithgow halfback Cooper Egan raced over from a scrum move, the Rams were up 24-nil after Matthew Noakes kicked his fourth easy conversion.

Porter added his second try in a first-half rout, aided by a couple of questionable referring decisions, and the Rams led 30-nil at the break.

The Tigers didn't receive their first penalty until the second half and crossed for their only try when Aberdeen's Pichai Dixon made a strong dart from dummy half.

The Rams will play Northern Rivers Titans in this Saturday's Andrew Johns Cup final in Mudgee after the Titans beat the Penrith Panthers 26-14 in their semi-final.

It was the Tigers' second heavy defeat in a row, after they won their first three matches.

THUNDERBOLTS CLAIM MEMORABLE FIRST WIN

The Victoria Thunderbolts were winless heading into Round 8 of the UNE SG Ball Cup but they broke their deadlock in fitting style with a 56-12 victory over West Coast Pirates.

Fullback Dean Ieremia starred with three tries while five-eighth Pita Will-Purcell had a day to remember with a 20-point haul, which included a try of his own with eight conversions.

They will host the Western Suburbs Magpies in the final round of the regular season with a golden chance to finish with back-to-back victories.

ALATINI RUNS RIOT IN TIGERS WIN

A first-half hat-trick from Mamana Alatini has inspired the Wests Tigers to a dominant 32-6 victory and assert their dominance as genuine Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup contenders.

The Tigers recorded six tries with five-eighth Emily Curtain enjoying a strong day with the boot, converting four of her six attempts.

They head into a blockbuster clash against the Panthers in the final game of the regular season.

RAIDERS CHASE DOWN SHARKS IN THRILLER

They may have trailed by 12-points at half-time but the Canberra Raiders have shown plenty of character to record a 30-26 comeback victory over the Sharks in the UNE SG Ball Cup.

The win was thanks to quick-fire doubles to Jordan Williams and Thomas Croker after the Sharks burst out of the blocks with four tries in the opening half.

The Raiders were quick to respond, however, with four tries of their own in the second stanza to cement second spot on the competition ladder.

EELS SHUTOUT PANTHERS

The Parramatta Eels Tarsha Gale Cup squad have put on an attacking masterclass but an even better defensive performance with a 36-0 win over the Panthers.

Chelsea-lina Koomson starred with a hat-trick and posed a constant threat with some dynamic runs through the middle-third.

The Eels now sit third on the ladder with one game to go in the regular season against the second-placed Knights.

SHARKS EDGE OUT INDIGENOUS ACADEMY

A hat-trick to Cronulla Sharks’ Tarsha Gale star, Jamie Chapman, helped secure a narrow 22-20 victory over Sydney Roosters Indigenous Academy at Cronulla High School Oval.

In a match that was well in the balance for the majority of the contest, it was the goal-kicking that proved the difference, with Cronulla's Lynda Haworth and Janelle Kennedy booting three goals between them, with the visitors unable to add the extras on their five attempts.

PANTHERS ROAR INTO UNE HAROLD MATTHEWS CUP TOP EIGHT

The Penrith Panthers have clawed their way into the top-eight with a convincing 32-14 victory over the Balmain Tigers at Leichhardt Oval. It was a well rounded performance by the boys from the foot of the mountain, running in four first half tries to the Tigers one.

Penrith’s dominance continued for the early part of the second half with back-rower Justin Sene crossing for his second four-pointer, before they let the foot of the throat late in the piece, allowing Balmain score two late tries to make the scoreline a tad more respectable.

The loss sees as straight swap in ladder positions between the two teams with Penrith slotting into eighth and Balmain into ninth.

STEELERS SNAG BRAGGING RIGHTS

In the battle of the St George Illawarra dragons two junior representative sides, the Illawarra Steelers have earned the bragging rights with a dominant second-half display at Kogarah. Steelers’ Matthew Feagai scored a hat-trick, while in-form half, Jayden Sullivan, booted five goals in their 40-16 triumph.

Horne’s name featured prominently on the scorers sheet, crossing the stripe an unbelievable
seven times.

Racene McGregor was perfect with the boot, nudging over eight goals. Brothers will go back to the drawing board and hope for a better result next week against the Tigers, while Cabra and Horne will enjoy a well earned week off.

FLEGG SHARKS BEGIN TITLE DEFENCE WITH A WIN

ourfooty media

A three-try effort from centre Ronaldo Mulitalo and a tradesman-like performance from his Sharks team has seen the Jersey Flegg side open their 2019 season with a win.

Mulitalo was the star on a day where the Flegg Sharks began their title defence with a convincing 34 - 0 triumph over the North Sydney Bears in signalling that they again mean business in 2018.

Fielding a side with only a sprinkling of the talent which dominated the under-20's competition last season, the Sharks battled their way to a 12 - 0 half time lead, before going on with the job in the second period.

Five-eighth Jayden Millard, one of the returning players from the premiership winning team, opened the scoring, then Mulitalo crossed for his first on the day in the 15th minute as the Sharks enjoyed an early 12 - 0 advantage.

Fullback Jonaiah Laulau scored early in the second half, with Mulitalo putting the result beyond doubt with two more touchdowns.

Laulau kicked five conversions from six attempts in the 34-point tally.

The win was the first for the Sharks, but also for new coach Daniel Holdsworth in his first official game in charge of clubs under 20's side.

The game was labelled as a round two fixture after all teams in the Jersey Flegg competition were given byes in week one.

The next assignment for the Flegg Sharks is a trip to Melbourne to take on the Thunderbolts in a game scheduled for a 2pm kick off on Saturday at Casey Fields.

Cedar Grove Academy Tally-Hawks (pictured) defeated Ascot High 8-4 in the first full girls’ game held in Jamaica. The high school sides met in a 9s clash, with previous activity for girls having been a tag tournament.

Ascot’s fleet-footed Krystal Hall wrote her name in the record books with the first try, levelled by Deandra Edwards, and it was the Cedargrovians who broke the deadlock when their head girl and vice-captain Naomi Mohamid broke clear to score the clinching try.

Antonio Baker, coach of the Tally-Hawks and also JRLA director of female rugby league was pleased with the efforts of both teams and the management behind them. “Females are just as eager as males to play the sport, so we are providing them with the opportunity to see what they can contribute,” he said.

Efforts are currently underway to develop a national framework for the women’s and girl’s game at high school, intercollegiate and national level. Currently, conversations are being held with Canada Rugby League to have their women’s team travel to Jamaica in 2020 to play a Test match, with a reverse fixture the following year.

Baker added: “Significant growth and development is the forecast for female rugby league in Jamaica as several stakeholders at high school and university level especially are already seeking ways to get their institutions involved in the sport.”

COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS: TIGERS UNDER-16S LOSE 40-10 TO NORTHERN RIVERS TITANS

The Tigers' under-16 side might have lost its final-round game of the Andrew Johns Cup to the Northern Rivers Titans in Armidale on Saturday, but it still qualified for the CRL's Country Championship semi-finals.

Beaten 40-10 by the outstanding Titans, who also qualified (unbeaten) for the semi-finals, the Tigers next play the top side from the southern pool in the semi-final in a fortnight.

"It's a bit of a mixed emotion," Tigers coach Steve Haylen said following Saturday's loss. "We got beat but still qualified."

That was by virtue of the Tigers winning their first three games.

"I wanted the boys to give it a good crack today [Saturday], and to be honest, they did," Haylen said.

"Everyone put their hand up. We just made a few fundamental errors and had a few defensive issues. We had a try disallowed as well. We now have two weeks to prepare [for the finals]."

He will be hoping prop Mark Simon will be right after injuring his right knee against the Titans.

Simon was strong while Tigers lock and captain Jock Brazel was outstanding.

"He was amazing," Haylen said of the hard-hitting, hard-working No.13.

The SG Ball Sharks have rebounded from a disappointing loss the previous week in scoring a vital 24-22 win over the Newcastle Knights in their round six junior rep clash on Saturday.

Playing a fellow finals aspirant, the win was crucial in keeping the under 18 Sharks in contention for a finals berth just three games from the end of the regular season.

In the other two matches played at the Sharks Academy Fields, the Matthews Cup Sharks suffered a 32-0 thumping at the hands of the Knights, while the Tarsha Gale girls were also beaten, going down by 28-12 to the Newcastle side.

But it was the final game of the day which brought the most excitement, the Sharks going to the break with a narrow two point lead, before a Tom Demeio try shortly after half time, also converted by the young hooker, giving his team an 18-10 advantage.

The Knights narrowed the gap once more with a converted try on the 50-minute mark, but the Sharks responded, Thomas Rodwell crossing, Demeio adding the extras, and the home team was again up by eight.

A late try to Newcastle gave the Sharks and their supporters some anxious moments but they were able to hold on and secure a valuable two competition points in pushing up to fifth on the SG Ball ladder.

The news wasn’t quite so positive in the earlier games, the Tarsha Gale girls falling behind by three tries, until Zali Hopkins opened the Sharks account with a four-pointer some 26 minutes into the contest, converted by Lynda Howarth and at 16-6 there was hope of a comeback against their Grand Final opponents of 2018... BOLD CALL PAYS OFF FOR TIGERS

Down by two points in a tight, low-scoring contest, the Balmain Tigers received a penalty with only a few minutes left on the clock. They had an opportunity to equalise with a penalty goal but turned it down for the chance of victory despite having a man in the sin bin. The would-be goal-kicker, Zane Camroux, scored a try to take the lead and win, proving the decision to go for victory instead of a draw was a good one.

EMILY CURTAIN PUTS ON SHOT OF THE YEAR

17-year-old Tarsha Gale Cup player Emily Curtain shook Campbelltown Stadium with one of the biggest hits of the season when the Wests Tigers hosted the Newcastle Knights.

The Knights ended up winning 28-10.

FENNING SCORES 20

The North Sydney Bears picked up their first win of the season in the SG Ball earlier today and Corey Fenning had a day out to remember. The Bears beat the West Coast Pirates 52-12 and Fenning scored 20 of their points. A try in the 24th minute to go with his eight goals was his tally for the afternoon in a win that the Bears hope will kick start their season.
Three hat-tricks in one game

The Manly Warringah Sea Eagles scored 58 points earlier today, but quite remarkably there were only four try-scorers. In their 58-10 thumping of North Sydney in the Harold Matthews Cup, Oliver Cummins, Oscar Palin and Zion Paulo all picked up three tries each.

JUNIOR SHARKS SPLIT THE POINTS

ourfooty media

It wasn't pretty but the Matthews Cup Sharks banked a a valuable two competition points, while their SG Ball counterparts were left to rue one that got away in round five junior rep fixtures played at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday.

The under 16 Sharks were at times their own worst enemies, squandering a 14-0 half time lead before holding on for a 16-12 victory over the Tigers, while in the SG Ball a late Balmain try saw the Sharks go down 18-14.

They were results which saw the Matthews boys consolidate their place towards the top of the competition table, while the under-18 Sharks need a strong finish over the final four weeks to ensure they will be a part of the Ball finals in just over a month's time.

While at McCredie Park in Parramatta, the Tarsha Gale Sharks again showed glimpses of what they are capable of but slipped to a fifth consecutive defeat.

The Tarsha Gale Eels led by try at 10-6 at half time, before overpowering the Sharks in a 32-10 triumph.

The result was a frustrating one for the Sharks girls and for coach Colin Dodd, who expressed his pride in his teams first half defensive effort, but disappointment in the fact they couldn't go on with the job during the later stages of the contest.

The Tarsha Sharks now face an uphill battle in qualifying for the finals in a bid to defend the title they won in 2018, however the team will be determined to finish their season on a positive note.

In the Matthews Cup the Sharks were dominant in the opening half, tries to Chaz Jarvis, Te Wehi Waitere and Kobie Wilson, with one Liam Sutton conversion seeing them take a handy 14-0 advantage to the break.

However just when it seemed a case of by how many, the Sharks let down their guard and the Tigers responded, scoring in the opening moments of the second period to narrow the gap to 10.

A Sharks penalty goal pushed the lead back out to 12, however two more Tigers tries made for a frantic finish and if the Balmain kicker had been on target, the result might have been a different one, the Cronulla side escaping with a four-point win.

With the win the Matthews Cup Sharks sit in fourth position, two points behind joint competition leaders Souths and Newcastle, and they get their chance to push up the ladder when they host the Knights at Shark Park next Saturday.

In the final game of the day at Leichhardt, the Sharks scored first in the SG Ball clash, hooker Tom Demeio crossing the line then converting his own touchdown, in giving his team a 6-0 lead.

In a closely fought match Balmain levelled and when neither side was able to add further points the teams went to half time locked at 6-all.

With the two sides going blow for blow, the Sharks went ahead with a Billy Burke try and a Demeio conversion, before Balmain again locked it up.

Again the Sharks would go ahead, a Kyle Pickering penalty goal giving them a 14-12 lead with seven minutes remaining, however the Sharks couldn't hold on, the Tigers crossing for the match winner in the 68th minute to send the Cronulla boys home with nothing to show for their efforts.

It was a scrappy performance from the Sharks and one they will hope to improve on when they host the Knights next Saturday. That match is scheduled to get underway at 3.45pm.

The Ball Sharks sit in seventh, equal with three other teams and in a fight to remain in the top eight over the final four rounds.

The Tarsha Gale Sharks also play the Knights, with the matches kicking off at 12noon (Tarsha), 2.00pm (Matthews Cup) and 3.45pm (Ball).

EPIC FIGHTBACK SECURES MURRI WIN

Story By : QRL Media

A second half comeback filled with attacking flair has seen the Queensland Murri Under 16 team retain the Steve 'Bear' Hall Shield with a 28-20 win.

Queensland were in the game early after a Keanu Wright-Dunrobin break got the Queensland supporters excited; but both teams displayed some strong starch in defence to shut down danger.

Murri winger Kmani Levi was over in the left-hand side of the field after some slick backline play; but the pass was ruled forward.

Instead, it was NSW who scored first with Tyler Moodie over in their far-right hand side corner. The conversion was successful for a 6-0 lead.

They were over again when a powerful run from Travys Downton proved too hard to stop; and he was over just to the left of the uprights for a 10-0 lead.

They were in for a third time after Queensland got bac-to-back penalties and they went to the left where a flat pass found Michael Whitton outside and he crossed to extend the NSW lead to 14-0 with the conversion unsuccessful.

While disappointed, Queensland were not disheartened, and they knew if they had some ball and stuck to coach Keiron Lander’s game plan of going wide; they would work their way back into the game.

They got their first try when Wright-Dunrobin kicked through the line and Braith Major ran and got his fingertips the ball for the Murris first try of the afternoon.

They went back-to-back when Wright-Dunrobin ran the ball to Brayden Duffy – who made a successful last-minute recovery to play - stepped out of tackles and found a flying Hubert Elu in support who ran his way to the try line.

Xavier Chatfield-Mooka unsuccessful with the conversion and the Murris trailed 14-10 at halftime after a strong fightback.

Their momentum continued into the second half when they earned three back-to-sets, with Tyreice Baira-Gela held up over the line with NSW again showing good defence.

Both sides upped the defensive intensity, but that also led to more errors, with possession swapping back and forth.

NSW fullback Fletcher Myers proved a handful all game and made a break that set up big NSW centre Jarrah McLeod to crash over by their left uprights for an 18-10 lead. Liam Browne converted for 20-10.

Queensland – who lost captain and playmaker Ezra Mam to injury during camp – had their backs against the wall, but showing their true spirit, didn’t give up.

NSW let the kick off go dead and Queensland got the ball back, but lost the ball in strong tackle attacking the line, giving NSW a scrum feed.

Heron Jia was able to steal the ball back for Queensland and they attacked, but tried to go in under on a congested NSW line and were held out.

Another NSW error meant Queensland got the ball back and this time they used opportunity with winger Kmani Levi stepping his way out then back in again and over to score the first second half try for the Murris.

With just over 13 minutes left to go in the half, Heron Jia made the difficult kick from the left-hand side line, with the ball bouncing off the upright and over to see the Murri side trail 20-16.

Queensland then went back-to-back again with a play that started with a Thomas McIntosh offload that the boys then worked out to the right, with Jodeci Baker kicking back inside. The bounce was perfect for Duffy, who collected the ball to crash over on the right-hand side.

Again, Heron Jia was able to slot the difficult conversion and he put his side in the lead for the first time 22-20.

Despite a few tense moments at the end of the game, Wright-Dunrobin put the icing on the cake for his side when he was able to produce a great kick that rebounded off NSW for him to collect himself and crash over the line for a 26-20 lead.

Heron Jia once again made no mistake and Queensland had held onto the shield.

Before kick off, both sides lined up for a minute’s silence to honour Steve ‘Bear’ Hall who passed away overnight and Queensland also wore black arm bands to honours the lives of the two toddlers who were recently lost in Townsville.

WWW.RUGBYLEAGUECOACH.COM.AU IS A NEW WEBSITE FOR JUNIOR PLAYERS WHO WANT TO GO ON TO THE NEXT LEVEL

Ex Manly Sea Eagles and Penrith Panthers junior reps coach Lee Addison has launched a website which gives players training videos and programs in fitness, strength, skills and sports science for as little as $7 a month.

“There are thousands of players out there who are doing training on their own in a bid to make the NRL or another high level” said Addison, who’s most recent coaching success was to steer unfancied Poland to undefeated success in the Emerging Nations World Trophy.

“What this website is designed to do is to make sure those players are doing the right thing for their rugby league game. Players can now use their mobile phone as a training campion and its all online for them. Fitness, Skills, Gym, Diet and Sports Psychology advice.”

There are currently well over 500 videos and plans on rugbyleaguecoach.com.au and Addison said that will double in the next 6 months.

“We are committed to putting ourselves in the minds of our players. I put a weekly motivational message on the site and the whole site is geared towards what they might be doing at this time of year.

So for example, junior clubs are in pre season and playing trials whilst rep sides are up and running.

“The biggest mistakes I see players make regularly are common.

They send the wrong message to their coaches sometimes with their attitudes or body language or they go training on their own, do the wrong thing and burn themselves out and wonder why they are struggling in their first game.

“The site is absolutely perfect for players who aren’t in representative systems. The content on the site is representative standard.”

This is not a surprise, from a coach like Addison who has coached at most levels of the game over two decades, including 2 World Cups with Ireland in 2008 and the USA Tomahawks in 2013.

His day time work for the last decade though has been with Under 18’s, firstly as Head Coach of Rugby League Powerhouse St Gregory’s College, where he had a certain James Tedesco wearing the number 6 jumper in his first season.

“When I was at St Greg’s I realised we had a team split in half in terms of their training. We had players who were doing lots (those with NRL clubs) and those who only had school training. So as far back as 2010 I was developing these programs for players and a lot of these ideas and concepts form the basis of the site.

“I would do a modified program for those who were at NRL clubs, and a full on program for those who weren’t. We ended up as back to back premiers in 2010 and 2011 against all odds so we did something right!”

Addison then headed up to Queensland where he took Ipswich State High School from the 3rd tier of the game in the sunshine state to second place to National and State Premiers Keebra Park 4 and 5 years later.

He’s now at Mabel Park State High School in Logan and these experiences helped him form the idea of a website to help all players.

“About last October, I had an idea of creating a “Virtual” Rugby League Club that anybody in the world can access.” He says “A club not restricted by geography, or weather conditions or time constraints that anyone can join.

A club that anybody in rugby league can access at any time.

“November 2017 I started to research the online world. After doing lots of reading on where this world as a whole was headed, it then became apparent to me that it would be a great way to go.

“Virtually everyone has a mobile phone with internet access, or can use public wi-fi, so now I can coach anyone in the world who wants to be coached.”

The first test for this new virtual coaching model came in 2018 when he was appointed Poland coach with only two months to go before the Emerging Nations World Championships and only a handful of players, many of them retired.

“The website played a huge part! I cannot emphasise that enough!” he says

“We had players in NSW, QLD, USA, Spain, UK and Poland to reach so I made a “Poland RL” page and included all the fitness and weights I wanted them to do prior to the tournament so they arrived fit and strong, I also added some game plan and tactical videos I wanted them to learn.

Players also shared video messages on there.

“Players in NSW had two sessions together (about 15 blokes) and in QLD we had 5 blokes so I ran two sessions up there too. Re: the overseas players I told them they could arrive the weekend before the tournament.

The whole team only got together for the first time on the Friday before the tournament opener for us.

They literally met each other an hour before a warm up match v Hungary! But, because they had studied the game plan stuff online, and done their fitness and strength work they had a fair idea what we had to do and then, when they were on the field, they did it reasonably well, but my trainers were running on and coaching them ‘on the run’ quite extensively.

We were in the camp the rest of that weekend then, so the day after (Saturday), I did a video review with the boys and then on the Sunday, we had our first ever training run as a team.

We had our second one on the Tuesday night and then Thursday we played Hong Kong and the rest, I suppose, is history.

The Poland RL coaching page is now open for the public to purchase access to and I will be continuing to coach Poland through that page moving forward.

There is also a “fly on the wall” type series on there about our ENWC campaign.”

“I wanted to make the prices very, very affordable for any budget. We are a working class game and I don’t want anybody to be priced out. There are also no lock in contracts so people can dip in and out if they like.

“We have 5 main sections, Coach, Player, Strength & Conditioning (S&C) Coach, Administrator and Poland RL.

“Subscribers can pay either monthly or yearly and there are big discounts for yearly memberships.

“For full access to all areas on the site its $149 a year or $15 a month

“For Players and S&C Coaches its $59 a year or $7 a month

“For Coaches its $99 a year or $10.50 a month.

“For the Poland RL section its a one off payment of $25 for a lifetime membership.

“The Administrator section is FREE and has some sneak peaks at what else is on the site.”

BACK-TO-BACK DRAWS OPEN JUNIOR REPS WEEKEND

You might be lucky to have one draw every so often in Rugby League but the third round of the UNE SG Ball Cup delivered two thrilling contests within the mere space of a few minutes.

The Parramatta Eels and Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles opened Round 3 with a 20-all draw at New Era Stadium as a late try to Sea Eagles winger Simon Tito, and ensuing conversion from Jack Birt, levelled the scores at full-time.

Meanwhile, the Illawarra Steelers and Balmain Tigers were also playing out an enthralling affair with a quick-fire double to Tigers centre Josh Rizk in the dying stages ensured a 32-all draw at Collegians Sporting Complex.

WEATHERALL BLITZ HELPS STEELERS DOMINATE

Maddison Weatherall has continued her scintillating 2018 form for the Illawarra Steelers in the Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup with a mammoth four-try effort helping her side to a comfortable 60-6 victory over the Bulldogs.

The 13-try haul saw a ridiculous eight tries from the Steelers in the opening 20-minutes of play as the Bulldogs managed to cross for their only try early in the contest through Jasmine Peters.

But Weatherall ensured the Steelers would claim their third consecutive victory to start the 2019 season as they comfortably sit in first place on the competition ladder.

The Steelers have not scored less than 40 points in each of their three games this season – a record that boasts 31 tries while conceding just six.

BULLDOGS SHUT-OUT LUCKLESS DRAGONS

The Bulldogs have finally found their groove after two disappointing losses to open their UNE Harold Matthews Cup campaign with a dominant 30-0 victory over the Dragons on Saturday.

The Dragons were fresh off the bye after a tough opening round loss to Balmain Tigers but were unable to stop a rampaging Bulldogs outfit as they ran in six unanswered tries.

The performance included a barnstorming display from Solomone Saukuru as the prop-forward scored two tries and worked tirelessly on either side of the ball.

The Bulldogs now sit 11th on the competition ladder while the Dragons remain without a win for 2019.

BYE DOES WONDERS FOR RELENTLESS SHARKS

The week off proved to pay dividends for the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks after a 36-4 defeat to the Steelers in Round One of the UNE SG Ball Cup as they recorded a 66-6 thumping of the West Coast Pirates on Saturday.

The Sharks were ruthless with the ball in the opening stages as they ran in six unanswered tries in the first-half, and were just as impressive in defence with some brutal efforts.

The win also included a hat-trick to winger Samuel Stonestreet as the Sharks stormed into sixth place on the ladder.

YOUNG SHARKS BOUNCE BACK

Story By : Sharks Media

The Sharks Matthews Cup and SG Ball teams returned to the winner’s circle with impressive round three victories, while the Tarsha Gale girls showed glimpses of their what they are capable of in a loss to the Wests Tigers.

Playing at three different venues against three different opponents, the SG Ball Sharks traveled to Perth where they came away convincing 66-6 winners against the West Coast Pirates, the Matthews Cup boys recorded a strong 18-16 victory over the Parramatta Eels, while the Tarsha Sharks went down fighting in a 30-10 loss to the Tigers.

The two wins came after round one losses and round two byes for the under 16 and under 18 boys, while the Tarsha girls showed signs of improvement but remain winless after three losses to start their season.

In WA the Ball Sharks were up 18-0 with barely 10 minutes of the match gone and had scored seven tries by the half time break as they outclassed their opponents.

While maybe less impressive in the second period, at least on the scoreboard, the Sharks went on with the job to record a win that lifts them to four competition points and also provides a handy boost to their for-and-against.

Winger Sam Stonestreet and fullback Hayden Sutton crossed for three tries each in the win, five eighth Max Devlin touched down twice, with hooker Tom Demeio notching up a personal tally of 20 points after scoring a try and kicking eight goals.

In the Matthews Cup the Sharks were forced to work a little harder than their older counterparts against one of the traditional powerhouses in the under 16’s competition.

The Sharks began strongly, tries to hooker Kobie Wilson and back rower Kynan Hodges opening an 8-0 lead in the first 15 minutes, before Wilson scored his second as the Cronulla side went to the break with a 14-0 advantage.

The Parramatta boys narrowed the margin with a converted try early in the second half but the Sharks were undaunted, pushing the lead out again to 18-6 when fullback Kristian Dixon crossed.

The Eels then scored back-to-back tries, missing the second conversion in leaving them two points behind, but in displaying good composure the Sharks would tough out the final 10 minutes in scoring an impressive win against a quality opponent.

The story wasn’t quite as positive for the Tarsha Gale Sharks who suffered their third consecutive defeat in going down to the Wests Tigers.

The teams went blow for blow early, the Tigers scoring first, then the Sharks responding in the eighth minute with a Jaida White four-pointer.

Two more tries to their opponents made it 14-4, but the Tarsha Sharks gave themselves a chance at 14-10 when Jamie Chapman scored and Kyla Johnston converted, but that would be as close as they would get, the Tigers flexing their muscle and running away with the game in the final period of the match.

The Sharks Junior rep teams will be in action again this weekend when all three play host to the Penrith Panthers in matches to be played at Shark Park. The Tarsha Gale kicks off at 10am, the Matthews Cup at 12noon and the SG Ball at 1.45pm.

TOOMALATAI’S HEROIC FOUR-TRY PERFORMANCE

The St George Dragons surged to top spot of the Harvey Norman Tarsha Gale Cup ladder after a dominant 40-0 victory over the Sharks, and they were inspired by an incredible four-try performance from Leanne Toomalatai.

Toomalatai opened the scoring in just the fifth minute of play and would find herself with three consecutive tries within 19 minutes in the second-half to cap off a dynamic individual performance.

The Dragons will now look to build on their first win of the season when they take on the Parramatta Eels this Saturday.

TOGOMAGA’S FIRST-HALF TREBLE

The Western Suburbs Magpies UNE SG Ball side bounced back from a tough opening round defeat to the Rabbitohs by recording a comfortable 34-6 win over the Roosters on the back of an electric first-half hat-trick from Piliaau Togamaga.

The livewire fullback caused plenty of havoc in the opening stages with a try after just five minutes of play before repeating his efforts just moments later to grab a quick-fire double.

By the 18-minute mark he had already grabbed his third try of the match, and continued to play a key role in the Magpies first win of the season.

PSIROUKIS' STELLAR 24-POINT HAUL

We may be just two rounds in to the UNE SG Ball Cup for 2019 but the St George Dragons have made a bold statement to the rest of the competition with a huge 52-4 victory over the West Coast Pirates.

Centre Spiro Psiroukis had a game to remember as he recorded eight conversions and two tries to contribute 24-points of his own.

The win included a first-half shutout of the Pirates as the Dragons held a 30-0 advantage before continuing their blitz with four tries in the second-half, including two from Stevenson Upulasi.

The Dragons now set their sights on the Newcastle Knights in search of their third consecutive victory.

LAST-GASP TRY GIVES EELS THRILLING VICTORY

Two competition points remained well and truly up for grabs in the final stages of the Eels Round 2 clash against the Steelers but a try to David Tui in the dying stages ensured a thrilling 28-20 victory.

The Eels held a comfortable six-point advantage as the full-time siren drew near before a try to Steelers back-rower Blake Dowel with five minutes remaining reduced the deficit to just two-points.

But Tui, who made a huge impact from the interchange bench with two tries in the second-half, scored the match-sealing try in the 68thminute to help record the Eels second win of the year.

The Tarsha Gale Sharks showed some late fight, but it was too little too late as the defending premiers started their 2019 title defence with a second successive defeat.

The young and inexperienced Sharks were no match for a rampaging St George Dragons outfit, conceding nine tries in going down by 40-0 in their round two clash at the Academy Fields at Cronulla High School on Saturday morning.

As was the case in a week one defeat to the Steelers, again the Sharks made it difficult for themselves by handing over too much football to their opponents, but in a good sign when the result was beyond doubt and the Dragons were looking to run up the score line, the Cronulla defence stiffened as they showed plenty of resolve over the final period of the match.

The Sharks now move on to a round three match against the Wests Tigers, with the task not getting any easier for the Tarsha Gale girls against a team with two wins from their two matches so far in 2019.

The round three match will be played at McCredie Park, with kick-off at 12noon.

The Sharks Matthews Cup and SG Ball teams had round two byes, with the Matthews Cup this week taking on the Eels and the SG Ball Sharks travelling to Perth to play the West Coast Pirates.

FROM SCHOOL TO BIG STAGE: DODD ONLY HAS FOOTY ON HER MIND

ourfooty media

While most Year 12 students were planning their end-of-year celebrations and preparing to say goodbye to schooling life, Quincy Dodd was too busy with a football in her hands.

After a breakout rugby league year, including NSW City selection and being named Cronulla's best junior – in the female or male field – Dodd is soaking up all the experiences that were handed to her in 2018 as she prepares to progress from a back-up to a priority for coaches.

"My brother got the smart genes, he's book-smart but I'm street-smart and would rather be playing footy," Dodd told NRL.com.

"I want to do teaching when I'm older but for now I'm taking it easy with footy. I've got a development officer job with the NRL to go around and do clinics with the kids and teach them the game so that will keep me busy."

And who could blame her?

We had the 3am boot camp and had no idea what we were walking into. It was a long week but epic though, I loved every minute of it. - Quincy Dodd

Dodd spent the 2018 season as one of the brightest young prospects coming through the women's system.

She was NSW's 18th player in the inaugural Holden State of Origin clash in June, and was included in Brad Donald's Jillaroos camp on the Gold Coast in late January.

"It was something I've never been in before," Dodd said of the recent Jillaroos camp experience.

"The commitment and how the Jillaroos treat themselves, they're all organised and put in 100 per cent. If they're not putting in, like if they're late, they get penalised.

"We had the 3am boot camp and had no idea what we were walking into. It was a long week but epic though, I loved every minute of it.

"Last year's overall experiences, even though I didn't get to play, it's made me push myself harder. I'm still young and don't want to get too far ahead of myself."

Donald has identified Dodd as a player who, with the World Cup just under three years away, could be cherry-ripe for picking by the time she turns 21.

All Stars a great chance for players to share their stories

In the short term, pregnancies to Sam Bremner and Nakia Davis-Welsh in 2019 also open the door for the Sharks junior to go one step further and take the field in further representative teams this season.

"It's definitely one of my goals to play for my state and country," she said.

"The girls were all saying at Jillaroos camp that 'one day you'll get there'. But I've got to set my mind to it and hopefully one day I can."

Dodd will start at five-eighth for the Indigenous women's side in Friday afternoon's clash with the Maori in the Harvey Norman All Stars at AAMI Park.

It will be the biggest game to date in her young career and first in a preferred halves spot after being utilised in the backline at the National Championships last season.

"When I played Tarsha Gale Cup last year halfback was my main position but I can be a bit of a utility at the back," Dodd said.

"I'm at the stage now where I've got to learn with how to play with other people, not just the same players week-in week-out."

Dodd will team up in the halves alongside Roosters teammate Sharon McGrady for the clash.

YOUNG SHARKS SWEPT BY STEELERS

The Illawarra Steelers scored a clean sweep with three wins from the three round one junior rep matches played at Shark Park on Saturday.

A new-look Tarsha Gale side were beaten 56-14, unable to stop a rampaging Steelers team in the first game of the day, the Matthews Cup boys were their own worst enemies in going down 16-12, while the SG Ball Sharks were overrun in the second half as they were well-beaten 36-4 by a slick Illawarra outfit.

It was a disappointing day for the three Sharks teams but there were enough good signs to indicate better things are ahead in the respective NSWRL Junior Representative competitions.

In the opening match the Tarsha Sharks were perhaps a little overawed in their round one clash, falling behind 32-0 before they were able to post first points on the stroke of half time courtesy of a Millie Graham try.

The Sharks, who won the Tarsha Gale crown in 2018 but this year field a young and inexperienced line up, were outscoring by just four tries to two in the second period but the slow start would give them no chance of starting the defence of their title with a win.

A long range four-pointer to Jaida White, one of the few returnees from 2018, was a highlight of the second half, with Kyla Johnston the Sharks other try scorer.

In the Matthews Cup the under 16's Sharks began well enough when Chaz Jarvis touched down in the north-western corner to open the scoring after some enterprising play from his inside men.

The match was stop-start, the referee awarding an inordinate amount of penalties and with his excessive whistle blowing going both ways, a 4-all half time score was a fair representation of the closeness of the contest.

The Sharks again edged in front early in the second stanza when some clever footwork from Ta Wehi Waitere saw the young centre touch down, however the next 15-minute period was all Steelers, with the visitors notching three tries to push out to a 16-8 advantage.

The Sharks gave themselves hope with an Angus Sutherland try with time left on the clock, but more penalties, coupled with errors and missed opportunities and the Steelers would take home the points after a 16-12 triumph.

While youth and inexperience at a junior rep level could perhaps be used as an reason the first two Sharks teams failed to play to their best, the SG Ball Sharks had no such excuse, with the majority of the squad returning after playing either under 16's or under 18's last year.

The under 18 Sharks were first on the board through rampaging winger Marco Talagi, but that would be as good as it would get, the Illawarra side asserting their authority in taking a 14-4 lead to the half time break.

As hard as the Sharks may have tried in the second 35 minutes nothing went their way, mistakes and ill-discipline enabling the Steelers to dominate as they recorded a 36-4 win, leaving the young Cronulla squad with plenty of work to do ahead of their next match.

The two mens teams will now have two weeks to reassess and go again due to round two byes, with the Tarsha Gale Sharks the only side in action as they take on the St George Dragons next Saturday.

The Matthews Cup Sharks play the Eels in round three, while the SG Ball team travels to Perth to play the West Coast Pirates.

SHARKS AND KNIGHTS CLASH IN JUNIOR TRIALS

The Sharks Matthews Cup, SG Ball and Tarsha Gale teams hosted the Newcastle Knights on Friday afternoon in their final trial matches before the start of the 2019 season.

The three Sharks teams, along with Academy 15's and 17's squads, were in action at the Academy Fields at Cronulla High School against strong Newcastle outfits.

The Matthews Cup and 17's Academy fixtures opened proceedings with both fields in action, in warm conditions at Cronulla High.

The Matthews Sharks began slowly before working their way back into the contest, however the Knights proved a little too strong on the day in scoring five tries to two, leaving the under 16 Sharks with some work to do ahead of their season-opener in two weeks time.

Christian Dixon and Siteni Taukamo were the Sharks try scorers.

It was a similar story and scoreline in the SG Ball trial, with the under 18 Sharks having their moments but giving up five tries to their opponents. Forwards Jess Colquhoun and Josh Finau crossed the stripe for the Cronulla side.

The final game of the afternoon saw the two Tarsha Gale Grand Finalists from 2018 renew acquaintances and it was the Newcastle girls turning the tables on the defending premiers in a five tries to one triumph.

With few returnees from 2018, the Tarsha Sharks head into the season with a young squad and inexperienced, but enthusiastic squad.

As for the two Academy games, the 15s Sharks were dominant and the 17's competitive in matches giving them a taste of what to expect in the junior representative arena.

The Matthews, Ball and Tasha Gale Sharks begin their seasons with home matches against the Illawarra Steelers on February 9.
