HOPES ALIVE FOR GIMBISI RETURN
Story By :
RUMOURS continue to circulate that Country Rugby League favours a return by Gimbisi Valley to Carlton Mid Group 2 in the under-18 grade should a vacancy occur.
Regional Area Manager Scott Bone has confirmed this was one of many options considered in the wake of the Warriors expulsion from the competition but the parent body ‘could not force any Group to accept a club they didn’t want’.
"We remain keen to find a pathway to rugby league for kids in the Kempsey area," he said.
"We’ll sit down to discuss the situation with anybody who wants to look at the bigger picture but we won’t use force."
Bone will attend a conference in Tamworth tomorrow that will seek to end the conflict between CRL and the Aboriginal Nations Super League that threatens to tear bush football apart.. Learn More

CRL ACTS TP END STAND OFF
Story By : Tamworth YourGuide
A SPECIALLY-formed Country Rugby League committee will meet with the Nations Aboriginal Super League in Tamworth tomorrow to discuss the breakaway competition.
CRL general manager Terry Quinn heads a committee including Greg Mayhew (Kempsey), Frank Fish (Narrabri) and Peter Brissett (Inverell) to meet with a Nations Aboriginal Super League led by chief executive Michael Anderson.
Group 4 secretary Ross Hamilton is confident the meeting will be a positive one, looking at the improvement and enhancement of the whole code.
Anderson hopes the meeting (starting at 10am at West Leagues Club) will attempt to end the standoff between the new Nations Aboriginal Super League and Country Rugby League.
He said the CRL did not recognise the newly-formed Aboriginal body but he was hopeful tomorrow's meeting would reach a suitable outcome for both organisations.
"I'm hopeful of a positive outcome that will promote rugby league in the bush and make it what it should be – a great outing for the families, black and white," Anderson said.. Learn More

GAZ CAN BE AS GOOD AS LOCKY
Story : Dean Richie - Photo :
28/02 LAURIE Daley last night spelt out why Mark Gasnier can develop into one of the world's premier five-eighths.
Gasnier was yesterday given a crash course in how to play No. 6 by Daley, one of rugby league's greatest five-eighths.
Daley and coach Nathan Brown want to make Gasnier, currently regarded as the world's premier centre, the game's best five-eighth.
Gasnier will make his permanent move to five-eighth in Saturday night's Charity Shield against South Sydney at Telstra Stadium.
Daley drove to Wollongong yesterday at the request of Brown to run his eye over Gasnier at a Dragons training session at WIN Stadium.
Gasnier missed last weekend's trial match against the Bulldogs with the flu but will this weekend officially take over from long-term Dragons five-eighth Trent Barrett.. Learn More - NRL ACTION MODELS |
STORM NAME STRONG LINEUP
Story& Photo By :
28/02 MELBOURNE coach Craig Bellamy today named his strongest possible side for Saturday's NRL trial and grand final re-match against Brisbane at Princes Park.
Bellamy recalled all of his fit, experienced players after fielding a second-string outfit in last weekend's trial loss to Manly on the Sunshine Coast.
"It's our last game before the season proper begins and it's a dress rehearsal for what's ahead of us," said Bellamy.
"We've chosen a very strong side for the game, and there are a few spots still up for grabs so it should be a great game."
Test centre Greg Inglis was named at five-eighth while the Storm's latest teen sensation, Israel Falou, has been selected on the interchange bench. |
NOVEMBER D-DAY FOR SEAEAGLES' BID
Story By :
MACKAY should know by November if its bid to join the State League in 2008 is successful.
QRL managing director Ross Livermore said at Saturday's Charity Match between the North Queensland Cowboys and New Zealand Warriors at Leprechaun Park that he expected Mackay to lodge its application in early October.
"We'll get all the financials by November and we'll make a decision by late November," he said.
Last year's application was rejected because Mackay had no players and no revenue guarantees, Livermore said.
"You've got to have a team and the money coming in," he said.
"You have to have revenue of half-a-million dollars to be competitive in the State League, and to have players signed up.. Learn More |
INJURY WON'T STOP INGLIS
Story& Photo By : Dave Donaghy (Herald Sun)
MELBOURNE Storm ace Greg Inglis will shrug off a painful elbow injury to play against Brisbane in this weekend's final pre-season hitout.
Brisbane will be without Darren Lockyer after he said yesterday he would be rested from Saturday night's trial at Princes Park in the wake of the Broncos' disappointing World Club Challenge loss to St Helens in England.
Brisbane's other backline stars, Karmichael Hunt, Justin Hodges and Brent Tate, are also likely to be placed in bubble-wrap, with concerns over travel the major factor.
The Broncos arrived back in Australia yesterday and will fly to Melbourne on Friday.
Inglis, 20, said it was disappointing not to be lining up against Lockyer, with Joel Moon, strongly courted by Melbourne last year, his likely replacement.. Learn More |

DOGS TO UNLEASH BIG THREE
Story & Photo By : Daily Telegraph
TEST players Willie Mason and Andrew Ryan - along with former Australian centre Willie Tonga - will play their first match of rugby league this season on Saturday night.
Bulldogs coach Steve Folkes will today name his representative trio in the side to play a trial match against New Zealand Warriors in Auckland.
Mason and Ryan return rested after a gruelling 2006 season which ended with the November Tri-Nations series.
Tonga has not played since sustaining a knee injury during the finals last season when Canterbury bombed out after so much promise.
The Bulldogs will take 21 players to Auckland for the Warriors game – Mason, Ryan and Tonga important cargo.
"We're feeling fresh and ready to go," Ryan said last night. "It was a bit of a struggle at training over the first few weeks getting fit again but it's all good now.. Learn More |

HE had his spine shaved during surgery, lay in bed for weeks and went through agony and heartbreak, but Sydney Roosters fullback Anthony Minichiello will this morning officially return to rugby league.
And Minichiello does so with a promise: "I'll be back to my best."
Minichiello yesterday spoke of the pain at seeing the Sydney Roosters crash last season and watching rival players steal away his fullback spot in the NSW and Australian sides.
The Daily Telegraph understands Minichiello – finally back after an excruciating 10 months out with a back injury – will be named at fullback for the Roosters trial match against Parramatta this Saturday night in Gosford.
Roosters coach Chris Anderson will announce his side today with Braith Anasta expected to be named after missing the last six games of 2006 through injury.. Learn More |
STORM ARE TO YOUNG TO CARRY BAGGAGE, SAYS JOHNS

AFTER spending part of the pre-season working with the Melbourne players at the invitation of coach Craig Bellamy, former international Matthew Johns is convinced they have not been mentally scarred by last year's grand final loss.

TXTERS SAY PAYNE'S A BORN LEADER
Story By : Townsville Bulletin
NORTH Queensland hooker Aaron Payne has strong support to be the next captain of the Cowboys.
That's the indication after the Townsville Bulletin asked readers to SMS their choice of skipper to replace the retired Travis Norton.
Norton and coach Graham Murray agree it is a choice between Payne and Test halfback Johnathan Thurston.
And the Townsville Bulletin TXTers agree.
Payne and Thurston were easily the two leading candidates with Luke O'Donnell, Paul Bowman and Jason Smith also attracting support.
But it was Payne who proved the most popular with 43 per cent approval ahead of Thurston with 25 per cent.
O'Donnell was next with 16 per cent of respondents voting for him, followed by Bowman and Smith who both had 8 per cent.
Murray is expected to name his choice at the club's season launch on March 8.
Payne had the honour of leading the team in its first trial against the New Zealand Warriors in Mackay last weekend and Thurston will get the job this weekend against Manly in Cairns. |

YOUNG GUNS BEAT SPIRITED MACKAY
Story & Photo : Townsville Bulletin
26/02 THE North Queensland Young Guns overcame a spirited Mackay Foley Shield team 36-14 in Mackay on Saturday.
But injuries to utility Jamie Frizzo and winger Scott Minto took some of the gloss off what Young Guns coach Matt Parish rated an encouraging performance.
Frizzo faces six weeks on the sidelines with a fractured bone in his foot while Minto is in doubt for this weekend's trial matches with a grade one medial ligament tear.
"It's unfortunate for Jamie Frizzo because he's been very good for us," Parish said.
"Scott Minto is a rough chance to play this weekend, depending how the injury settles down over the next day or so."
The Young Guns did not have things all their own way against the Sea Eagles who had the consolation of 'winning' the second half after trailing 24-0 at halftime.. Learn More |
FOLOU HARD TO IGNORE
Story By : Herald Sun Photo By : ourfooty media & News
26/02 THE next Lote Tuqiri is poised to be unleashed on the NRL earlier than expected after Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy conceded the pre-season form of youngster Israel Falou could no longer be ignored.
Israel Falou, 17, can cement his debut with another eye-catching display in Storm's final pre-season hitout this weekend after a "standout" performance in the 30-20 loss to Manly on Saturday night.
The most exciting prospect since Greg Inglis burst on to the scene two years ago, Falou will face his toughest test yet -- premier Brisbane.
Bellamy said Falou, a 190cm, 97kg centre or winger, continued to impress.
"You just can't ignore it," Bellamy said of Falou's form.
"He keeps playing well. He was probably the standout (against Manly). He's certainly pushing for a spot in the team or at least on the bench." .. Learn More |
RUSTY ROGERS
Story By : Steve Ricketts
26/02 GOLD Coast Titans skipper Scott Prince yesterday pleaded for patience from supporters after former Wallaby Mat Rogers made a quiet return to the 13-man code on Saturday night.
Prince conceded Rogers had been "rusty" in the Titans' historic 22-10 win against Parramatta in Lismore but tipped a big season ahead for the 31-year-old.
Rogers is in a log jam of players vying for spots in the three-quarter line for the round 1 NRL clash with St George Illawarra at Brisbane's Suncorp Stadium, with coach John Cartwright conceding centre and wing were his biggest selection headaches. |
GALLEN LATEST TRIAL CASUALTY
Story & Photo By : Daily Telegraph
26/02 CRONULLA's State of Origin forward Paul Gallen will today have scans on an injured ankle amid fears he could be sidelined for up to eight weeks.
Gallen, who represented NSW last season, injured the ankle during the Sharks' 22-4 win over Souths in Gosford on Saturday night.
If scans show extensive ligament damage, Gallen could be ruled out for between six to eight weeks.
The club's medical staff however remain positive the injury may not be so serious.
They are hoping Gallen could be missing only for a month, which would mean he would be unavailable for just one NRL match.
There was, however, some more positive news from the Bulldogs camp yesterday.
Injured players Matt Utai (ankle) and Daniel Holdsworth (ankle) met with club doctor Hugh Hazard. |

26/02 TEST forward Luke O'Donnell may face a battle for a Cowboys starting backrow place after several of his understudies put in powerful displays on Saturday night.
O'Donnell was rested from North Queensland's 32-14 win over the New Zealand Warriors in Mackay, and Steve Southern and Jacob Lillyman stole the show in his absence.
"The two backrowers were probably our best," Cowboys coach Graham Murray said yesterday.
"Particularly in the early exchanges they were really strong and it is always a big test up against the Warriors with their size.
"We get Luke O'Donnell back this week and David Faiumu and Paul Bowman are available as well.
"It will be a bit of a headache trying to fit them into that team."

GALLANT WESTS TIGERS GO DOWN IN FOUNDATION CUP

Sydney Roosters won the inaugural Foundation Cup match at Aussie Stadium on Saturday, February 17, with a 10-4 victory over the Wests Tigers in front of a huge crowd of 16,198.
Locked at 4-4 at half-time, the Roosters produced the lone try in the second half through half-back Jamie Soward.
Wests Tigers started the game with Danny Galea coming in for injured second-rower Ben Galea (hamstring).
The Roosters had a try disallowed to winger Sam Williams for a forward pass in the fifth minute.
A knock-on by Roosters full-back Shaun Foley 10 metres out in the seventh minute gave Wests Tigers their first tryscoring chance. MURRAY PROTECTS GEIA
Story & Photo By : Courier Mail
10/02 NORTH Queensland Cowboys coach Graham Murray says he will resist any temptation to rush teenage flyer Obe Geia into his first grade line-up in the early rounds of this season.
That decision comes even despite the absence of established wing men Matt Sing and Ty Williams.
After breaking his left leg and also requiring a right knee reconstruction in 2006, Williams is not expected to play before late April.
Coupled with Sing's decision to end his career in England, the Cowboys backline will have a different look in 2007.
"The backline is far from cut and dry, and the trials will play a major role in determining how we line up in round one," Murray said yesterday.
"Apart from (Johnathan) Thurston, (Jason) Smith and Matty Bowen who pick themselves we have a few combinations to think over.. Learn More |

FOUR games, a dozen NRL names, more than 100 talented up-and-comers and all for the cost of $8. Be there when Wynnum Manly hosts the Broncos at BMD Kougari Oval this Saturday
With the bulk of the Brisbane squad overseas for the World Club Challenge, young hopefuls such as Nick Kenny, Joel Moon and David Taylor will instead suit up on the city’s bay side.
There they will meet a Wynnum side – as yet to be announced – which is expected to feature a decidedly new look under incoming coach Shane McNally.
For those that missed it, it’s worth noting the last time David Taylor visited Wynnum he absolutely tore up the Kougari turf.
It should be interesting see whether the mooted replacement to Shane Webcke can submit a repeat performance when he comes up against a strengthened Gulls pack, led by former Bronco Ben Czislowski.

CELTIC CRUSADERS 6 BRISBANE BRONCOS 32
Story By Ian Golden at Brewery Field Photos ourfooty media/Ian Lovell
What a night at the Brewery Field in Bridgend. It didn’t matter that the Broncos won the game – the real winners were Celtic Crusaders and Welsh Rugby League a whole with the publicity that it generated over the week preceding the big game, a record Crusaders crowd of 2,041 and a plucky performance from the home side.
The match, known as the Bulmers Original Cider Challenge, after their lucrative sponsorship deal, gave Celtic Crusaders column inches in the local press that had previously been unheard of.
Leading the way were the South Wales Echo with almost a page a day dedicated to the match for the three days leading up to the game with a different picture of Darren Lockyer on each occasion.
Yes, the media and general public as a whole now know that the Celtic Crusaders are here. All local television stations gave live feeds from the ground before the game, broadcast pre-match items the days before and are due to show highlights on their Friday night shows.
Real Radio had an hour long Celtic Crusaders special on the evening before the game while Bridgend’s local radio station, Bridge FM, ran a competition just three hours before kick-off for two tickets to the match and they report that it generated the most number of callers ever for a competition on their station and the telephone staff just couldn’t handle the amount of calls received.
“It’s been the biggest night of Welsh Rugby League since the days of Jonathan Davies,” said Crusaders’ Operations Manager Gerald McCarthy. “It’s been really hard work but it was well worth it – the visit of the Broncos has helped get the Crusaders on the map. And what a fantastic effort from our lads, we’re all really proud of them.”
To say that the Crusaders performed a lot better than they did against Widnes Vikings last week is an understatement.
The Broncos, with nine Australian internationals in the side, struggled for the first quarter of the game, looking a little jet-lagged after their long trip as the Crusaders initially looked the better side.
Darius Boyd was put under pressure in his own goal area and was forced to place the ball down to prevent being tackled by Tony Duggan.
Brad Thorn very nearly knocked on by his own 30 metre line while Corey Parker was penalised for just that when he was close to scoring.
It took 20 minutes for the NRL champions to break the duck, and it all stemmed from a Darren Mapp knock-on when he was close to the line. From the scrum, Shane Perry broke through and slipped the ball to Darren Lockyer who ran the ball under the sticks. Parker converted.
The Crusaders were playing out of their skins in both attack and defence. Lockyer could have scored a second try was it not for a joint tackle from Van Dijk and Phil Cushion that forced him to drop the ball.
The Crusaders’ determination was rewarded on 31 minutes as they levelled the scores. Mark Dalle Cort laid the ball off to Welsh international Grant Epton who weaved his way through the Broncos defence to score. Luke Young kicked the conversion.
Justin Hodges’ pass that was intended for Darius Boyd instead found touch.
But Hodges made up for that a few minutes later when he successfully intercepted a pass and easily ran the ball under the sticks. Michael Ennis converted to give the Broncos a slender half-time lead.
However the Australians took just 80 seconds to register their first score of the second half. San Thaiday made the metres down the centre of the park, culminating in Steve Michaels finishing off a fine passing move in the corner.
Karmichael Hunt finished off a similar move seven minutes later and Parker converted to give the visitors a 16 point lead.
The Broncos had started to entertain. Darius Boyd impressed the crowd with a darting run but Brent Tate was tackled following an offload. Sam Thaiday also made a fine run but Ben Hannant dropped the pass.
Crusaders weren’t without their chances. Damien Quinn made a powerful break but Darren Mapp failed to capitalise on his good work.
But Broncos extended their lead on 62 minutes when Steve Michaels scored his second of the evening. Tate added another on 69 minutes to make the final score 32-6 to the visitors.
Crusaders coach John Dixon was very pleased at the effort that his new-look side put into the game.
Dixon said: “It was a very commendable performance from the boys. There were some really positive signs from our footy team today. I thought our forwards played really well against a set of backs that have some real size and power. We took some pride in defending our line – it was a very creditable performance from us.” |

STUART WANTS MORE BIG GAMES IN THE COUNTRY
Story By : Barry Hilderbrandt (DUbbo Liberal) Photo ourfooty media.
07/02 Australian coach Ricky Stuart and Dubbo Rugby League president Ian O’Neill agree that more National Rugby League (NRL) games should be played in the country areas.
O’Neill was one of more than 40 people who listened to Stuart speak to junior league coaches and others at Apex Oval in Dubbo on Thursday night.
From the outset Stuart said he was a huge supporter of country football and O’Neill was quick to ask why more games involving the NRL clubs are not played away from the city areas.
“I think we should be pushing for our best trials to play in the country areas, games close to the start of the competition when the coaches will be using them as full scale selection trials,” Stuart said.
“Most of the NRL clubs are struggling with their funds, crowd numbers are down and there isn’t a reason that I see why we can’t play more games in the bush.
“I would also like to see the money raised from the games pooled and shared by those who miss out on the games.” On this point, O’Neill was quick to disagree.
“Ricky, I don’t agree about that especially when you have progressive groups like here in Dubbo who work hard and produce results, then in your plan, would have to serve out that money to other clubs,” O’Neill said.. Learn More |

THURSTON HAD A YEAR TO REMEMBER
Story By : Townsville Bulletin
05/02 FROM Queensland's come-from-behind State of Origin series win to Australia's golden point triumph in the Tri-Nations series final, North Queensland play maker Johnathan Thurston stamped himself as a man for rugby league's biggest occasions in 2006.
Thurston's efforts have earned him one of 10 nominations for the 2006 Townsville Bulletin Sportstar of the Year Award alongside his Cowboys teammate Luke O'Donnell.
The 23-year-old's memorable year in the representative arena began in May, with his Test debut against New Zealand. Thurston came off the interchange bench in Australia's 50-12 win in Brisbane.
He would go on to play starring roles in both the State of Origin and Tri-Nations Series.. Learn More |

PRESS RELEASE 09/02 The Barmy Army has today rallied all members to the cricket to fight the Mexican Wave ban at Aussie sporting grounds. Starting with the Today Show on Friday morning, Army spokesman "the real Gilly" will launch a Save The Mexian Wave Wave campaign with a new twist : Mexican theme.
Instead of pasty white skin and the cross of St Andrew, supporters can expect to see sombreros, huge fake moustaches and larger than life pisteleros.
"The Barmy Army lead the cricketing world when it comes to support, so it's great to have them on board," said Matthew Newton, founder of Save The Mexican Wave.com.
"We've united to call on all fans to show their colours - Mexican colours, that is - at the cricketing finals in the next week. Fans can also paint their sombreros or chests with "Save the Wave" to put their support up there in big,
black letters."
"The Barmy Army has copped a hiding this summer from a humour-less Cricket Australia. Given their enormous economic contribution in the past few months to our country, this is even more disgraceful. For the first time since Federation, Aussie and English cricket lovers can finally unite in defence of fun at the
cricket." |
NRL COMMUNITY CARNIVAL DAY 1
Source QRL
FROM flood conditions in the north of Queensland to 40 degree drought conditions in south western NSW and a bone dry lake in Ballarat, 120 stars of the NRL encountered the extremes of regional Australia as they headed to 60 destinations for the NRL Community Carnival today.
One constant was the enthusiasm kids had for the game and the surprises they had in store for some of the game’s big names.
The St George Illawarra Dragons in Proserpine were greeted by 760 primary school students all decked out in red and white clothing.
“It was quite amazing, it was as if we’d walked into the crowd at Kogarah Oval,” Dragons coach Nathan Brown said today.
“At the school before they had sung when the Saints go marching in and performed a Mexican wave.
“The kids are just so excited and polite. Regardless of who they follow they just want the chance to ask an NRL player a question.
“Some of them really knew their footy; one family wished Adam Peek and Ben Creagh happy birthday for yesterday and I hadn’t even known it was their birthday.”
In a somewhat drier part of the world in Hay, Nathan Hindmarsh was the star visitor for a group of kindergarten kids enjoying their first ever day at school.
“One four year old got the impression that it was the sort of thing that happened every day and asked who would be along tomorrow,” Nathan said
“He thought school wasn’t looking all that bad if this is the sort of thing that goes on.”
At Hillston Central School Nathan learned that a 16 year old had forced his family to cut short their annual holidays by a week just so he could meet the Parramatta star.
“I didn’t realise that’s what he’d done until later but it shows how much it means to a lot of people to get to meet the players,” Nathan said.
The Cronulla Sharks began their Community Carnival duties on the NSW South Coast last night.
Sharks coach Ricky Stuart and players Ben Ross, Dustin Cooper, Fraser Anderson, Paul Gallen and David Simmons met with volunteers and coaches from the local leagues to talk about promoting involvement and development opportunities.
“We had blokes who drove 80 kilometres just so that we could all swap around some ideas,” Ricky said.
“It was a really enjoyable experience from our point of view and a reminder of how much dedication these volunteers have to the game.
“We’ve got the whole squad down here and it’s really rewarding for the guys to see first hand how much the game means to people out here.”
The effects of the drought remained a sobering experience for many of the players.
The Bulldogs bussed their way out to Cowra where Chris Armit stood in bone dry fields with local farmers and Junee boy Adam Perry met with a local drover who’d been moving cattle since November in search of rain.
“You see pictures of the drought on the TV news but you don’t really understand how bad it is until you come out to the country and see it yourself,” Perry said
“But speaking to the locals you can’t help but admire their spirit.”
In north western NSW the Rabbitohs headed from school visits in Werris Creek to Tamworth where they launched ticket sales for the Bundaberg Rum Legend League match to raise money for drought relief.
The local footy ground, which was recently featured in the Sydney media because it was too dry to play on, is just one example of the help that is needed.
Amid the smiles in Ballarat the Melbourne Storm players also had a first hand reminder of the dry conditions.
Lake Endure in Ballarat is bone dry while the oval the players tried to conduct training and an autograph session on is now called the ‘dustbowl’ by locals.
“Once we got going though the kids showed they still know how to have fun,” Ryan Shortland said.
“I’ve come to Melbourne from Port Macquarie and it was a real eye opener to see what it was like here, but the kids were really happy and enthusiastic.”
David Gallop joined the Titans in northern NSW where the prospect of a new team has generated plenty of local excitement.
“There’s certainly a new burst of enthusiasm throughout the North Coast about the year ahead,” Mr Gallop said.
“The players really make an enormous impact when they come to regional areas in any year but there’s certainly that bit of extra emotion around 2007.
“Luke Bailey had as big a smile on his face as some of the kids.”
The Community Carnival swings into day two tomorrow with teams spread as far as Adelaide (the Tigers) and Perth (The Roosters).
The New Zealand leg of the Carnival kicks off next week.

NO STATE OF ORIGIN FOR JOEY
Story By : abc Sport 02/02 Newcastle's champion half-back Andrew Johns has ruled out a return to State of Origin rugby league.
The 32-year-old, who quit representative football in 2005, admitted it had been hard to watch New South Wales lose last year's series 2-1 to Queensland.
But he dismissed reports in today's papers which claimed he was poised to return in a Blues jersey later this year.
Johns stressed that he would be honouring the clause in his Newcastle contract which stops him from playing representative matches.
He said his age and injury problems over the past few seasons made him a "week-to-week" proposition and he wanted to devote all his energy to helping the Knights reach a grand final. |
BAILEY'S FIRED UP TO SLAY DRAGONS
Story By : Luke Turgeon
03/02 HIS former teammates have promised to `rip his head off' but Titans co-captain Luke `Bull' Bailey can't wait to hit the turf at Suncorp Stadium and get stuck into tackling St George Illawarra.
Taking his first look around the Titans adopted home ground in Brisbane yesterday, Bailey said he was already pumped up for the Gold Coast's National Rugby League debut against the Dragons on March 18.
The barnstorming prop caught up with a few ex Dragons teammates in Wollongong on Australia Day and they let Bailey know he might as well run out with a target on his chest.
"I had a beer with them a couple of weeks ago and they are looking forward to ripping my head off," said Bailey.
"Most of the boys were there, Rylesy (Jason Ryles), Gaz (Mark Gasnier), Youngy (Dean Young), Coops (Matt Cooper) and all the guys.
"They didn't say anything to my face but as I was leaving they gave me a bit of a blast.. Learn More |

After the sharp 30 odd minute session we asked Champion Steve Bell how training and things are going, he said " that we can't wait to play footy, just let us play footy, our first trial is in what, 5 weeks yet, it's all good, yeah we have all been training really well. But we are in this to play footy after all."
You guys play the Storm in your first trial Steve, "SO, bring it on"
While walking around the NSW Institute of Sport looking for Manly Legend Steve Menzies for a bit of a chat about footy, life and all sorts of stuff, well, 20 minutes later I realised I was lost. Steve had done the Harry Holt by then so we can not bring you our chat with Steve Menzies for a couple days. |

WHO'S WATCHING NOW?
Story & Photo's By : ourfooty media
30/01 IMAGINE you are 12 years old playing footy, having a bit of a rest down at fullback and so you decide to attack that booga that has been there all day. What do you do?
Well of course you gotta pick that booga out. It's cool. Your 12! if anyone sees you they'll just laugh and say heh look at that kids picking his nose.
Now imagine you are playing for your favourite footy team at Telstra Stadium. There are 60,000 mad Sydney siders watching, screaming their heads off and... the booga is back. What do you do ? (tell us what you would do)
Now this may seem like a simple little thing and it really has nothing to do with your nose. It is a scenario where a player could be in a situation where he could embarrass himself and his team mates or worse.
Let your mind wander for a minute to think what would it would be like if it was your life under the microscope, your life people were interested in everyday. How many headlines could they make out of just one day in many of our lives?
Welcome to the life of a professional rugby league player.
Stay tuned for the 2KY Big Sports Breakfast interview with NRL boss David Gallop this morning. |

JUNIOR SPORTS STAR OF THE YEAR NOMINEE
Story By : ourfooty media 29/01 In more junior news, Jarrod Thompson (pictured) has been nominated for the Junior Sports Star of the year by his local community newspaper the Macarthur Chronicle.
Jarrod has achieved every honour available to 15-year-old schoolboy rugby league players. The St Gregory’s Campbelltown student, who lives at Camden, was a member of the NSW Combined Catholic Colleges team that won the Australian All Schools championship, was named his side’s Most Valuable Player and made the Australian Schoolboys 15-years merit team. Jarrod plays with the Illawarra Steelers. |
It was a three-hour stint outside a footy ground near his home town of Maclean, on the north coast, waiting for his hero to emerge.
The player was Kurt Sorensen, a Kiwi forward who forged an unfashionable reputation at Cronulla and Easts in the early '80s.
"The Roosters came up for a coaching clinic, but I was always a big Cronulla fan as a kid," Brown recalled.
"Kurt Sorensen had changed from the Sharks to the Roosters, so I made Mum sit in the car until nine o'clock at night to get his autograph.".. Learn More |

HUNT TO BE NEXT BRONCO'S CAPTAIN?
Story By : Courier Mail 02/02 KARMICHAEL Hunt has emerged as Darren Lockyer's likely successor as captain of the Brisbane Broncos as the club prepares for the impending retirement of its veteran stars.
Hunt, 20, has impressed club insiders with his leadership qualities and chief executive Bruno Cullen yesterday threw his weight behind the star fullback's captaincy claims.
Cullen said he envisaged Hunt being a one-club player and as long as the Test representative kept a level head the sky was the limit. Lockyer, who turns 30 next month, is under contract for another three years, when Hunt's current deal is also due for renewal.
"There is nothing to say Darren will not play on but if he retires then Karmichael could be the logical choice, especially as the likes of Petero Civoniceva, Brad Thorn and Tonie Carroll would have finished by then," Cullen said.. Learn More |
INGLIS HAS INSTANT SEX APPEAL
31/01 MELBOURNE Storm sensation Greg Inglis has vowed to maintain his fearless attacking approach in 2007 despite being poised for a shock switch.
The code's most dangerous weapon with the ball, Inglis, 20, will be shifted to five-eighth for next month's trials, despite having never played the position before.
Speaking yesterday for the first time about the switch, Inglis revealed a move to the vacant No.6 jersey had been on the cards since last season's painful grand final loss to Brisbane.
"We sat down at the end of last season and talked about not seeing enough ball," Inglis said.
"It was the one area we wanted to fix up." The decision by Storm coach Craig Bellamy to move Inglis closer to the ruck received an overwhelming thumbs-up from greats Brad Fittler and Gene Miles.. Learn More |
