AIS SIGN OFF WITH DEFEAT OF LIONS
Story By : Tom Hoyle RFL
ENGLISH LIONS U18s 0 v 42 AIS
Leeds Rugby Academy
The Australian Institute of Sport completed their European tour with a comprehensive 42-0 win over the English Lions U18s.
With scrum-half Christian Hazard in outstanding form and centres Anthony Coleman and Tom Hughes running strongly out wide the Lions found the going tough in a game that was switched to the Leeds Rugby Academy from Heworth 24 hours earlier to beat the freezing conditions.
The Lions gave as good as they got in the opening exchanges but a break from hooker Peter Nay ended with Hazard diving over under the posts to for a try he converted himself to get the tourists up and running.
Despite captain Karl Dixon marshalling his side well the AIS increased their lead when Hazard scored in the corner from a short side play and just two minutes later Coleman grabbed a deserved try to make it 14-0.
Numerous handling errors stooped the home side making much progress and they were again punished when full-back Andrew Heffernan raced clear and Hazard booted his second goal to ease the AIS into a 20-0 half-time lead.
After re-grouping at the break the Lions returned with renewed vigour and just like the first period matched their opponents for the opening ten minutes.
However, after soaking up some pressure the Australians increased their lead when winger Lorenzo Vogel finished off a great handling move for try number five.
Hazard added his third goal after Tyson Cleal had showed great strength to touchdown just six minutes later, before the Lions went close only to be recalled twice for forward passes.
With the contest entering the final stages the AIS made their superior fitness count as they added three more tries through a brace from Hughes and a hat-trick score from the excellent Hazard.
The win completes a hat-trick of wins for the AIS in the UK after earlier wins over Wales U18s and the England Students.

ENGLAND LIONS COACH KELVIN LOCKETT HAS A CHAT
“We gave it a really good shot but the AIS were at a higher level.
“They’re a very good side and I’m sure a few of their players will go on to play at a higher standard in the coming years.
“I was a bit disappointed with our first half performance as we made a lot of errors, but in the second I thought we put in a real effort and maybe the score line could have been a bit closer.
“We were competitive for large periods of the game and I thought Ian Curnow, Perry Singleton and Lewis Sheridan were amongst our better performers.”

DIXON TO LEAD ENGLISH LIONS U18S
Karl hopes to end "best ever" season with win over tourists.
Karl Dixon will captain the English Lions U18s for their clash with the Australian Institute of Sport at Heworth on Wednesday, kick off 7.00pm.
The Wath Brow Hornets stand-off is hoping to cap his best ever season with a win over the tourists and at the same time gain some revenge for last year’s 38-24 defeat.
“I don’t think we were too far off last time, it was maybe their fitness that got them the win,” said Dixon.
“We’ve had several training sessions together as a squad and a hit-out against Wales to prepare us for this game and it seems to have gone well. We were probably a bit unlucky to lose to the Welsh but I’m sure we’ll be more than ready when we face the Australians.”
The youngster played a pivotal role in Wath Brow’s National Conference League triumph and is hoping to end 2012 with another big performance.
“It’s been an unbelievable season for me so far but beating the AIS would probably top everything.”

England Students 30 v 36 Australian Institute of Sport
Leeds Rugby Academy
The Australian Institute of Sport came from behind three times to beat the England Students 36-30 in a thrilling game in Leeds.
Home prop James Wallace crashed over to give this side the perfect start and with Matt Bradley kicking the first of his five goals England were up and running.
However, the AIS soon found their way into the game as Nathan Wilson rounded the home defence from the base of the scrum to make the score 6-4, and then Shaun Hudson improved an effort from Michael Barclay to take a 10-6 lead.
That lead was increased when winger Lorenzo Vogel followed up his own grubber kick, but cheered on by a healthy crowd England roared back with two quick-fire tries before the break.
The impressive Sam Williamson reached out to score despite the attention of four defenders and then centre Will Collins hit a well-timed pass to race over. Both efforts were improved by the boot of Bradley meaning that England led 18-16 at half-time.
AIS scrum-half Christian Hazard took just four minutes of the second period to collect his sides next try, before a mix-up in the visitors defence allowed Sam Williamson to register his second of the afternoon and keep the game in the balance.
The impressive Wilson reduced England’s advantage to just two points with a 40 metre touchdown as the game entered the final quarter, and lively half-back was then the architect of the games crucial score just two minutes later as his offload allowed Rhys Norman to set up a break which resulted in Casey Burgess providing a clinical finish.
With plenty of time left England pushed hard to find some more points but a resilient AIS defence held firm as they claimed their third win from four tour games so far.
Hudson completed the scoring with a penalty two minutes from time and sets the tourists up nicely for the final game of their trip against the English Lions U18s at Heworth on Wednesday, kick-off 7.00pm. |

Story By : GAVIN WILSON
The Australian Institute of Sport came from behind three times to beat England Students 30-36 in a thrilling game at Leeds Rugby Academy on Sunday.
England got off to a strong start when powerful prop James Wallace crashed over for a try converted by Matt Bradley, who was faultless with the boot all afternoon.
AIS soon found their way in to the game and when a well placed kick forced an error from England Full-Back Mark Wilson, AIS Stand-Off Nathan Wilson rounded the home defence with a well timed run from the base of the scrum to make the score 6-4 after 14 minutes.
The tourists then hit the front for the first time after 23 minutes after a deft offload by Jack Kavanagh created an opportunity for substitute forward Michael Barclay to score, converted by Shaun Hudson for a 6-10 lead.
That lead was extended to 6-16 seven minutes later when Left Winger Lorenzo Vogel dived on his own attacking grubber kick, showing real invention while under pressure on the last tackle.
England hit back with two quick fire tries just before the break however; first Sam Williamson reached out to score despite the attention of four defenders, then Left Centre Will Collins ran on to a perfectly timed flat pass at pace from ten yards out and there was no stopping him giving England an 18-16 lead at Half Time.
AIS Scrum Half Christian Hazard was on hand to support a Sam Blanch break to give the visitors the lead once again after 44 minutes, but a mix-up under a high ball just moments later gifted England's Sam Williamson his second try of the afternoon.

Mark Wilson extended England's lead to 30-22 by catching a pinpoint kick from Matt Bradley to score after 55 minutes.
Nathan Wilson - who was outstanding throughout – reduced England's lead to just two points on the hour mark with a 40 yard break to score.
Wilson was then the architect in the best and most crucial try of the afternoon. His offload to Rhys Norman in midfield created space for a break that was finished superbly by Casey Burgess and AIS hit the front for the third time with 15 minutes remaining, the score 30-34.
As this pulsating game entered its final phase England were pushing hard for a winning score but the AIS defence remained strong.
Touring Full-Back Shaun Hudson then converted a penalty with 2 minutes remaining and despite England regaining the ball from the kick off, they could not convert pressure into points, and AIS held on for a memorable victory. |

AIS secure big win
England Students next up for tourists.
The Australian Institute of Sport started the UK-leg of their 2012 tour with a comprehensive 52-12 win over Wales U18s in Neath last night.
The tourists – who’s next game sees them face the England Students at Stanningley, Leeds, on Sunday – had too much power for a brave Welsh side as they crossed for ten tries in a commanding performance.
Wales head coach Barry Eaton admitted the AIS were too good for his side.
“You have to take your hat off to them, they were very ruthless and they punished us when we let them off the hook.
“The fact that they were trying at the death to nullify our second try just shows you what they are like.
“Our boys can be proud of their efforts but maybe they can channel those efforts a little bit better and deal with the situations a little better so you give yourself more of a chance. But in terms of Australia, they were very impressive.”
After facing the students on Sunday the tourist will complete their five-game trip to France and England with a game against the English Lions U18s at Heworth, York, on Wednesday December 5.

WALES UNDER-18 12 AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF SPORT 52 .
WALES' Autumn Test series finished in a resounding defeat to a powerful Australian Institute of Sport XIII but the youngsters earned praise from the opposition for a never-say-die attitude amid 80 minutes of constant pressure.
Wales had beaten England and Scotland over the course of the last few months but, with some of the Australian AIS side already signed by NRL teams and looking to be the megastars of the future, it was going to be a tall order for the Welsh to contain their threat.
And so it unfolded as the relentless Australians ensured their first game in the UK of their winter tour, having played in France this month, ended with success.
Wales head coach Barry Eaton admitted that the Australian Institute of Sport side were far and away ahead of his team, and probably many other international age group sides.
But he thinks there are a lot of things to take from the match and the Series in itself to help Wales in the future.
Eaton said: "The start of the game, from our point of view, was not great. We kept putting ourselves under pressure and they caused us a whole host of problems.
"For 20 minutes, we didn't seem to be able to handle it but we caused one or two problems ourselves but 70 per cent of possession was in Australia's favour.
"You have to take your hat off to them, they were very ruthless and they punished us when we let them off the hook. Any back-to-back repeat sets (of six) they had, they punished us.
"The fact that they were trying at the death to nullify our second try just shows you what they are like. They probably had a swell of possession.
"Our boys can be proud of their efforts but maybe they can channel those efforts a little bit better and deal with the situations a little better so you give yourself more of a chance. But in terms of Australia, they were very impressive.
"We have a lot of players in that dressing room who are either new to the game or trying to make their way in the game and the potential of those Australian guys in the dressing room is that some - or most - of them already have NRL contracts under their belts.
"From that point of view, the boys have competed. Physically we matched them but Australia did the little things better than us."
The difference in levels was evident as early as the first minute when the AIS grabbed a lead they would never lose.
Half-back Christian Hazzard raced fully 40 yards down the left hand touchline to go over and convert his own try from wide out. It set a pattern of playing rugby league the Aussie way that Wales could not match.
The AIS were 10-0 up inside five minutes when winger Shaun Hudson finished off a neat move also wide out on the left, which, as the course of the game went, turned into a lucrative area for the Junior Kangaroos.
Many Welsh fans would have been hoping for one of those epic Wales v Australia encounters that have happened at student and full international level when home winger Chris Leyshon intercepted a loose ball 35 yards from the line and just about squeezed in for captain Courtney Davies to land a spectacular conversion from the touchline.
But the AIS youngsters were determined not to let Wales anywhere near them again. By half-time, the Aussies had extended their lead to a 30-6 and the Welsh cause looked decidedly lost.
Wing Tom Hughes went in for the first of his tries on 13 minutes after he went in under the posts.
Home hooker Connor Farrar was one of the best players in the Welsh team and managed to secure a great individual turn-over as Australia again pressed in the Welsh half.
But it was only a plug to stem the torrent as Hughes got his second on 18 minutes, Hazzard completed his own try double and, after the Australians were twice denied tries when referee Chris Kendall called that they had not grounded the ball, interchange Tyson Cleal eventually got them away from any possible Welsh comeback threat.
From there, it left Wales flapping and only their sheer pride and determination prevented the match becoming a rout.
Interchange Nathan Wilson got the AIS into a 36-6 lead but with great obstenance, Wales held out until wing Shaun Hughes crashed over for another try, Australia's eighth, on 57 minutes when the incredible Hazzard set it up.
Lively hooker Peter Nay got his just rewards 12 minutes before time with a try which was a real gem as he took a play-the-ball from 40 metres and danced past two Welsh defenders to go over under the posts.
Hudson got his second try seven minutes from time but Wales had the last word as Jordan Howells crashed over under a pile of bodies and was adjudged to have grounded the ball for Davies to kick his second conversion of the night.
But Australian AIS coach Brad Drew, the man in charge of the players who will become the next great stars of Aussie rugby league, said Wales put up a game fight.
Drew said: "The Welsh have got some decent players in their side and our boys, we had three games of preparation coming into the UK, so I challenged their mentality.
"We have not been on the training paddock for a few days but I was pleased with the way they approached it and stood up and responded.
"I am trying to give the players a fair crack and I don't know who is best and who is not. There were a lot of times in the game where our ball control was loose but you can't have it all and I'm happy that the boys have done well - particularly in (freezing cold) weather that we are not used to.
"Wales are a work in progress and they have some very good players in their side. They have plenty of potential and I hope all of those players get the opportunity to do themselves proud and go on to play for their country at senior level."

WALES FACE THEIR 'BIGGEST TEST 'AGAINST FUTURE AUSTRALIA STARS
Story By : Gary Baker Media Manager Wales RL MEDIA RELEASE
AUTUMN UNDER-18 TEST SERIES
WALES head coach Barry Eaton is expecting the biggest challenge of the Autumn Test series when his unbeaten Under-18 side go into battle against the teenagers destined to be future rugby league champions.
Wales, who have beaten both Scotland and England in the past fortnight, play the 'Kangeroos in Waiting' at The Gnoll, Neath, on Wednesday night (ko: 7.30pm).
The Australian Institute of Sport have been on tour for the past few weeks in France and Eaton believes they will put out their strongest possible side to face the unbeaten Welsh in what could prove to be a titanic clash.
Many Australian stars have graduated through the IOS and through to play in the NRL and for their country at senior level but Wales are looking to give the 'Junior Kangeroos' a real run for their money.
Eaton said: "This is probably the most difficult task of the three games we have had so far this month. We had to raise our game up a level against England but we have to raise it up even further to face the Aussies.
"They have been over here for the last few weeks and I think Brad Drew (Australia's coach) will want to put out his most senior 17 players for the game."
Eaton has players in the Under-18 team that have been part of the Welsh senior squad that played in the Autumn Internationals against France in Lens and England at The Glyndwr University Racecourse, Ground, Wrexham.
However, he said: "Other than Rhys Pugsley, who played for Wales against France last month, this will be the biggest game in the lives of our team. These Australian players are the ones who are going to go on to play NRL and in State of Origin matches and World Cups in the future.
"But, for players like Rhys, Courtney Davies (captain) and the others who were involved with the seniors, you cannot put a value on the experience they have gained from it.
"When you are training with the top-draw players that Wales have at senior level, it is only going to bring out the best of these younger players."
All the Wales squad are fit for action after training last Sunday, so Eaton said: "We are ready to go and give it our best shot and who knows what can happen?"
The South Wales Scorpions provide the bulk of the Wales team, with Conwy Celts half-back Jordan Sheridan getting a chance to face the Aussies. Two Super League players are included int he side in back rower Jason Blackmore, of Widnes, and Wigan ace Pugsley.

Just had a phone call from tour manager Dave Norman to give us all a bit of an update on whats happening.
The squad is in Bristol after arriving yesterday arvo, they spend the rest of the day walking around checking the city out.
Today the boyz are training all day, the weather is cold and miserable, so concentration will play a big factor in how they go.
Rhys Norman is healing well from his 4 facial fractures he go in the 1st game against the French u19 and is the only player that will not be concidered for the upcoming Welsh game. Selection will again be difficult for coach Brad Drew, Co coach Andrew Ryan has had to come home to Australia due to NRL rookie Camp commitments and will be missed by the entire squad.
The whole squad have been coming along very nicely and special mention goes to Nathan Wilson, Anthony Colman and Andrew Heffernan who are playing and training the house down
We will have the team to play the Welsh u18 tomoz |

WALES U-18 V AUSTRALIA AIS - PREVIEW
Story By : By Gary Baker Wales rugby league
WELSH captain Courtney Davies believes he has learnt a wealth of knowledge from national coach Iestyn Harris in the past month.
Now 18-year-old Davies hopes to bring all of that experience to his age group side for the massive clash against the Australian Institute of Sport at The Gnoll, Neath, on Wednesday November 28 (kick-off: 7.30pm).
Wales are on a roll after beating Scotland in the first of their triangular series Test matches this month and following that with a brilliant 30 - 24 victory over England in Leigh.
The teenagers have now got to move up even more gears to face an Australia side of whom many may be in a World Cup winning side of the future.
It is a big ask but Davies has had the experience of training with the senior squad during the recent Tri-Nations International Series, along with teenage colleagues Rhys Pugsley and Osian Phillips, to call on as they face their biggest Test this year.
Davies said: "I can tell that a couple of the boys are nervous about the match but all we have to do is look at our second-half performances against Scotland and England and we can take a lot of positives from there.
"It's my third time facing them (Australia) and I know what they will bring to the table. We are really confident and training is going well.
"It is going to be ten times faster facing Australia than it was against Scotland or even England but if we can put two halves of rugby together, we can do alright."
Davies has made great strides this season, and his involvement with the senior team, under Harris, has added further momentum.
"I got so much out of being part of the seniors," said the Port Talbot half-back. "It gave me so much more confidence in my game.
"When I was training with the seniors, I dropped the ball about four times during the week and Iestyn said that was too much which just shows the standards he expects at that level.
"I saw him sometime later and he asked me how many I dropped that week. I said 'none' and he was happy. He doesn't shout at you but you understand his authority. He is one of the best coaches who has spoken to me."
All of that confidence and belief is now rubbing off on the Under-18 side and helping Davies lead his side to success.
He inspired them at half-time, when they were 20 - 6 down against Scotland in Wrexham, to stage a comeback and win 46 - 28.
And with players like Pugsley, who made his senior debut against France in Lens last month, adding to the mix, Wales have a good young batch of talent to drive on in the future.
"Against England, we nearly gave it away in the last ten minutes when both sides were struggling but we just stuck to the basics and completed our sets of six. I spoke to the boys are half-time and said we needed to cut down on our errors and mistakes and that is how we score points.
"Now two good halves of rugby will give us a chance against Australia," added the skipper. |

FRENCH MATCH REPORT
A STOUT HEART, THE VICTORY
To the popular success in Salon-de-Provence, where nearly 2,000 people crowded into the aisles of the stadium Marcel Roustan with the flawless organization of PACA League rugby league, he only wanted sporting success for the supervision of the team of France less than 19 years, which has willingly showed his joy at the end of a meeting tough but extremely pleasant.
Australians imposing entrance
And the beginning of the meeting promised fierce debate, a terrible struggle for victory. Captain teammates Joris Bissière have long made blow for blow fierce impacts their Australian counterparts before Hazard Christian, half-of-melee does not play the Kangaroos and sends redundant Andrew Heffernan Promised Land (15th). But blueberries do dégonflaient not far away, and a kick thorough Bissière in the in-goal, Bastien Escamilla arose in the middle of "Green and Yellow" to flatten, beautiful (21st).
Once the counters reset (4-4), the local décomplexaient and tried multiple combinations and took risks that would be paid as a quick opening three-quarters to the right, Ferret took the hole and passed to Miloudi which had only flatten (26th, 8-4). And this slight advantage, the Blues would keep until Mr. Drizza not return the twenty-six players in the locker room.
The public, a little restrained began to push back the "small" Olivier and Thierry Dumaine Janzac.
A perfect state of mind
The return of lemons, the scenario was remarkably identical to the beginning of the meeting. Five minutes of the game and the players took advantage of the Antipodes shift captain Christian Hazard for Brent Gentles traveling at the trial (45th, 8-8). Men Brad Drew, coach of the Australian training would maintain their advantage and harden their defensive play but the Roosters were not resigned, far from it.
Very active before the image of Bastien Canet man of the match, the French pack, although incomplete was able to forget the absence of Margalet, Guasch Springer or displaying a state of mind and a desire incredible. Miloudi advantage also whistled for a penalty of a slowdown in the view taken by Paul Molinier to restore to his advantage (52nd, 10-8).
It was not as short as two minutes later Hazard advantage of the same mistake French to spend two points up (54th, 10-10).
Sanction to the French
The debate became heated after plating returned to Martial Romano and Jo Stimpson, the offender was sent ten minutes to calm down on the bench by Mr. Drizza Miloudi and spent the penalty against the post (58th, 12-10).
From there, everything seemed to be easier for Blueberry and operated perfectly Bissière interval that presented itself to give Molinier, who flew in perch (60th, 18-10).
The Marseillaise rang in the stands transcended the French, which continued and pushed the Australians at fault. Molinier, yet it was slow and inscribed Miloudi the French third penalty of the evening (68th, 20-10) before the joy does not end with a breakthrough flamboyant Ghanem, who went into the Promised Land (79th, 26-10).
The French public to celebrate its young people, their state of mind and especially their victory against what is best in the world in terms of rugby.

2012 AIR RUGBY LEAGUE PROGRAM
GAME 1 V FRENCH UNDER 19’S
MATCH REPORT
The 2012 AIS Rugby league tour kicked of last night in the very picturesque town of Salon De Provence in the south of France. Unfortunately the Australians did not get the start they hoped for.
Despite a positive start which saw the Australian team open the scoring with a well constructed try to fullback Andrew Heffernan, our boys were not able capitalise on their early success.
A very committed French team, spurred on by a large and very vocal crowd, struck back with a try in the 22nd minute and from that point on were never headed.
At half time the French led 8-4 but after a committed passage of play just after the resumption the AIS struck back and the scores were locked at 10 all after 14 minutes. Unfortunately that recovery was short lived and on the back a healthy share of possession and a very well executed series of play the French took control of the match and put on two further unanswered tries.
Despite being disappointed with the result head coach Brad Drew said “There were plenty of positive things in our performance tonight. We will build on the lessons we take out of tonight as we prepare for our next match in Toulouse on Thursday.”
Michael Barkley was named man of the match for the AIS.

This is an email from AIS team manager Dave Norman :-)
Just a quick note to let you know that we have arrived and settled into our French base very well. All of the boys are enjoying themselves and are all looking forward to tomorrow’s opening game.
There has been a change to the opening game with the kick off time moving from 3.00 pm as stated in the itinerary, to 7.30 pm. This better suits us as it allows us more time after the long drive from our base in Toulouse.
A further change to the itinerary involves the last match against the British Community Lions. This game will now be played on WEDNESDAY 5TH DECEMBER. Full venue and kick off details will follow shortly. |

TOUR UPDATE
12:15am
Story By :
Thanks to Storming Dave Norman for ringing with some news of whats going on in France.
The squad of 25 players have all training very well making the coaches job of selected the team to take the field very difficult with all 25 players pushing hard for a spot in the side to play the 1st Test.
We should also have some vision of the boyz training soon.
Brad Drew says the squad have benn training so well the planned afternoons session wasn't need and he has given the boyz the arvo off. So they have gone sight seeing.
Tonite the entire squad will be attending a local match in Toulouse and will be presented to the crowd before the game which is a huge honour and shows how much the French rugby league respect the AIS footy program.
The players should be back at the digs in an hour or so and we will be hoping to get some more news including having a chat to coach Brad Drew on his thoughts of the 2 French games
|
TOUR UP DATE
Story By :
The weather isn't too bad in Toulouse atm, its only 14 degrees today, but thats better than freezing hey.
France is 11 hours behind us here in Australia (East Coast) so its nite time for the boyz.
Today they had a full day of training including a full opposing game against one of the local clubs in peperation for the 1st Test against the French National u19's in 2 days.
The boyz also spent some time checking out the sites of Toulouse and no doubt the local talent.
We are trying to contact the squad and will be starting to interview a few of the boyz as the tour progresses. |

LOCKETT NAMES SIDE FOR WALES CLASH
Story By : RLF
English Lions U18s head coach Kelvin Lockett has named his 18-man squad for this Saturday’s game with Wales U18s at Leigh Miners Rangers, kick off 2.30pm.
The full 26-man squad were put through their paces in a final training session last weekend after which Lockett announced his reduced group.
“We’ve had some good games against Wales in the past and I’m sure this one will be no different,” said Lockett.
“I’m expecting them to be a very competitive side and they had a good hit-out against Scotland last week so will be well prepared.
“Our own preparations have gone well and I’m very happy with the way our training sessions have gone. Saturday’s game will be a big test for us but we’re all really looking forward to it.”
Wath Brow Hornets Karl Dixon (pictured) has been named as captain and he is joined by fellow Hornets Ian Curnow and Charlie Tomlinson in the side.
The 26-man squad will then convene later this month to prepare for their game against the touring Australian Institute of Sport on Wednesday December 5.
