LOCKETT NAMES SIDE FOR WALES CLASH
Story By : RLF
English Lions U18s head coach Kelvin Lockett has named his 18-man squad for this Saturday’s game with Wales U18s at Leigh Miners Rangers, kick off 2.30pm.
The full 26-man squad were put through their paces in a final training session last weekend after which Lockett announced his reduced group.
“We’ve had some good games against Wales in the past and I’m sure this one will be no different,” said Lockett.
“I’m expecting them to be a very competitive side and they had a good hit-out against Scotland last week so will be well prepared.
“Our own preparations have gone well and I’m very happy with the way our training sessions have gone. Saturday’s game will be a big test for us but we’re all really looking forward to it.”
Wath Brow Hornets Karl Dixon (pictured) has been named as captain and he is joined by fellow Hornets Ian Curnow and Charlie Tomlinson in the side.
The 26-man squad will then convene later this month to prepare for their game against the touring Australian Institute of Sport on Wednesday December 5.

DYLAN TACKLES RUGBY HEAD ON Story By : GREGOR MACTAGGART
DYLAN Cartwright is a young man who has a bright future in the game of rugby league.
The 18-year-old last week returned home to Darwin after representing the Australian Institute of Sport on a month-long tour of the United Kingdom and France.
A product of the Palmerston Raiders and NTIS scholarship holder, Cartwright received the Col Matthews Medal for his efforts on a tour featuring four wins from five matches.
"It was a great honour, winning (the Matthews medal) was pretty much the same feeling as winning a game for the green and gold," Cartwright said.
"Going on the tour was a once in a lifetime opportunity, I was stoked to go and I just put my head down and gave it everything."
That approach certainly worked for Cartwright, who was one of four Territory rugby league products who were on tour.
Your Say
Chris Smith, Ado Waianga and Tom McLennan also featured in conditions that Cartwright admitted were far different to what they were used to at home.
"It was the coldest weather I've ever played in," Cartwright said.
"We had a few games in minus temperatures, we didn't play in snow, but we saw some over there." Adding weight to Cartwright's appearance on the tour is the fact he was a late starter to the game of rugby league, having first played the sport about three years ago.
"I started martial arts when I was five and did it for 10 years with the NT Tang Soo Karate Academy," Cartwright said.
"That got my strength and mindset for what (sport) I wanted to do and Mark Nolan first got me into rugby league when I was playing school sports for fun.
"I'm glad I went from martial arts to rugby league.
"I was lucky to be picked for the NT side after a year with the Raiders.
"From there I got into the NTIS program and went on from there."
A Brisbane Broncos fan who lists Sam Thaiday as undoubtedly his favourite player, Cartwright will head to the Sunshine State early in the New Year to try out with the Queensland Cup powerhouse Redcliffe. |

AIS ARRIVE HOME SAFELY Story & Photo's By :
The 2011 touring Australian Institute of Sport rugby league squad arrived in a cold and rainy Sydney early on Tuesday morning.
The boyz all looked tired after their 4 week tour of France and the United Kingdom, but are happy to be home, most of the boyz still have a few hours travel ahead of them as they fly off to their various final destinations.
The 2011 AIS squad have surpassed all expectations only beaten in the one game, by the referee we might add, four out of five victories including the mighty England Academy, who could until last week easily claim the title of the best junior rugby league team in the world.

BRAVE LIONS GO CLOSE
Story By : RFL
Community Lions U18s 24 v 38 Australian Institute of Sport
Heworth ARLFC
The touring AIS were given a real freight by the Community Lions last night before picking up their third win on UK soil with a 38-24 success.
In a hard-fought battle the hosts stunned the tourists as they raced into 16-0 lead inside the first 22 minutes.
Full-back Sam Forester got the ball rolling on nine minutes with a well-taken effort, before winger Scott Pink drew a great cheer from the home crowd with the Lions second touchdown just three minutes later.
The boot of Jack Jones made it 10-0 and things got even better when the impressive Adam Jefferson crossed the whitewash for another Jones improved score.
After seeing off the England Academy side just days earlier the AIS were clearly shaken by the home sides start, however, they slowly worked their way back into the contest before hitting back in dramatic fashion in the final ten minutes of the first period.
Jack Creighton opened their account in the 25th minute and by the time referee Chris Kendall had blown for half time the tourists were back level thanks to further tries from centre Euan Aitken and winger Bosam MacDonald, plus two conversions from the boot of Brendan Elliot.
The opening exchanges of the second half were pretty even, before scrum-half Daniel Clarke stepped his way over for a converted try to give the AIS the lead for the first time.
The crowd were soon cheering another Community Lions try when winger Ben Garner went over to cut the gap to just two points, although strong-running Brandan Klee soon re-asserted the Australians advantage when he powered over for another six-pointer.
Winger Brody Rigg was the next tourist to add his name to the score sheet and the 12-point gap that opened up was to prove crucial.
With the contest entering the final 10 minutes Barrow Island winger Garner helped himself to a second try to give the Lions a glimmer of hope, however, the game was sealed in the final minute when Corey Jenson crossed to give the AIS winning finish to their 2011 tour.
Lions head coach Kelvin Lockett was understandably pleased with his side’s effort.
“I’m really proud of the lads,” said Lockett.
“I couldn’t have asked for any more from them and they weren’t far off from coming away with a win.
“The AIS are a very good side, as they showed against the England Academy at the weekend, but if a couple of errors and decisions had gone our way it could have been an even better night for us.”

AIS v COMMUNITY LIONS
Story By : The 2011 AIS tour of France and the UK has finished with another win, this time against the Community Lions.
Winning four of their five games this year shows just how important the AIS rugby League program is and how vital the AIS program is for rugby league in Australia.
After a very tight 1st half, both teams went into the sheds at half time locked at 16 all, the after a nice rev up from coaches Brian Johnson and Col Matthews, the AIS boyz turn it on in the 2nd stanza to blast the Poms off the field with an additional 22 second half points to record a fine 38 - 24 victory.
Young Trea Clarke was voted the AIS ' Players Player ' in another outstanding performance, and was well backed up by the entire team who never game up

LOCKETT PLEASED WITH LIONS PREPARATION
Story By : RFL
Community Lions head coach happy ahead of AIS test.
Community Lions U18s head coach Kelvin Lockett is pleased with his sides preparations ahead of the clash with the Australian Institute of Sport tonight, Wednesday 7 December, at Heworth ARLFC, kick off 7.30pm.
His 20-man squad – which was named last week – will hold a final training session this Saturday ahead of the huge test against the high-regarded tourists.
“We’ve had some really good sessions already and I’m really pleased with how they’ve gone,” said Lockett.
“Alan Davidson (Scotland), Colin Phillips (North West) and Chris Baxter (London) have all helped me out and their input has been really useful.
“We’ve really focussed on our defence as we know that we’re going to be tested by a strong AIS side.
“I’m pleased with how our attack has been functioning but I’m hoping that spending more time working on our defensive patterns will stand us in good stead.
“I think we’ve got a lot of athleticism in our side and I’m really looking forward to the game.”
There could be plenty of local interest as Heworth’s Tyler Craig is in with a chance of selection, whilst fellow Yorkshire man Matty Welham (Myton Warriors) could also make the 17.
The last time the AIS faced Community Lions opposition was in 2009 when they overcame England 48-20 at Widnes, and they have travelled over to the UK almost every year since 2003.

ENGLAND ACADEMY DEFEATED BY AIS
Story By : Nathan CLARKE RFL Media Release
The England Academy fell to narrow 22-20 defeat at the hands of the Australian Institute of Sport in a bruising encounter at Leigh Sports Village today.
The Academy side, captained by Bradford Bulls Loose forward John Bateman, ran in four tries in a stellar performance but couldn’t find the killer touch late in the game to secure the win.
The Australian’s opened the scoring on the five minute mark after Jarrod Watson was on the end of a perfectly placed cross-field kick to dive over the whitewash. Scrumhalf Doug Hewitt added the extras to give the tourists an early six point lead.
England responded through some excellent play, with first Stevie Ward and then George Williams breaking through the defence, but England couldn’t capitalise on either opportunity.
James Duckworth then levelled the scores when he caught an arrowed kick from Williams on the last tackle to make it 6-4 and England went into the halftime interval ahead by 8-6 after centre Mark Percival snaked his way into the corner, eluding the defence moments before the whistle.
The second half began poorly for England when Alexi Falepaini was put through to score under the posts after Hewitt had carved open the defence to put the tourists back in front.
England looked to have responded almost immediately when captain Bateman went in under the posts to the roaring approval of the 1,054 crowd in attendance only to see his try ruled out for a forward pass.
England were made to pay when AIS captain Rhett Webster slid in down the left hand touchline after some inventive play to keep the ball alive saw the Australians go from one side of the pitch to the other.
With just over ten minutes remaining, Bateman collected the ball 30 meters out, shrugged off the first tackler to create an opening and the big forward then showed a blistering turn of pace to beat the cover defence and dive in on the left hand touch line. Williams slotted the extras to bring the scores to 16-14.
In an thrilling final few minutes, Ado Waianga collected a high kick to seemingly secure the win only for England’s Greg Wilde to hit back with an instantaneous response, but it proved to be the last throw of the dice for England as the game finished 22-20.
“We’re obviously disappointed to get beat but I was very pleased with the performance that the lads put in today and there are lots of positives for us to take from the game,” said England Academy coach Dave Elliott.
“The lads are all distraught but this is the start of a journey for them and we’ve emphasised the need to give these players access to International competition. The players have had that and we’ve got a platform to work on and build on.
“It was a great effort from the boys. There were some outstanding individual performances in our side but we made a few errors and collectively at times we just couldn’t get over the line and you pay for that at this level.
“In the end their experience told and they held on for the win but we know where we went wrong and what we could have done better so now we’ll go away and work on that and look to improve going forward.”
It was the second win in a week for the Australian’s following their 36-0 victory over Wales mid-week and they travel to York next for a clash against the Community Lions at Heworth ARLFC on Wednesday, December 7 (7.30pm).

Its match day for the AIS squad today against the mighty England Academy side and the boyz are on their way to new base camp in York.
The Poms have made a huge build up for this game and are anticating a huge crowd at the Leigh Sports Village.
"We are fielding what we believe is our strongest available team", says Storming Dave Norman.
The England Academy will be the challenge of the tour with this star studded side full of Super League players, but this AIS side have talent from one side of the field to the other well led by brillaint halves.
If the Aussie boyz can be disiplined and get plenty of footy, the results might indeed suprise our pommie mates

AUSSIES WIN 1st GAME ON UK LEG
Australian
Institute of Sport under 18s started the British leg of their tour with a win as, in torrential rainy conditions, they beat Wales 36-0 in Neath on Wednesday night.
The Welsh end their autumn campaign with a win and a defeat while the Australians will be full of confidence before their games against England and Great Britain Community Lions, the latter of which will surely contain a number of Welsh youngsters following some healthy individual performances this month.
The home side were beaten but not disgraced and the scoreline doesn't show how much effort they put in against a strong Aussie side, many of whom are affiliated to NRL clubs.
An early Australian attack was well picked up by TJ Collin, but from the next play, Jack Creighton dived over. Doug Hewitt missed the kick.
Mawedo Waianga attempted a second but was held up over the line, but Aleki Falepaini scored following the play-the-ball. Doug Hewitt missed both conversion attempts.
Wales attempted to fight back. Jack Molloy was held up over the line while Jacob Morgan's grubber was too long for anyone to latch onto.
At the other end, Rhett Webster fumbled a Kodi Nikorima pass as he looked for Australia's third try and Hayden Hanson had a score disallowed for a forward pass.
However with two minutes to go in the first half, Falepaini was sent over for his second of the game. Hewitt converted to make the score 14-0 to the visitors at the interval.
Wales started well in the second half and with the rain now stopped, both sides were able to play more of a skilled game with the visitors especially excelling.
The home side attempted to break through but were denied by some strong defence.
But the Australians scored on their first major attack of the period and a good passing move ended with Kodi Nikorima running home. Hewitt converted to make the score 20-0 before adding a try of his own minutes later.
Jarrod Watson scored the next Australian try, breaking free of the Welsh back-line to run 30 metres to the line. Hewitt easily added the extras.
There could have been more but Brandon Lee and Dan Clarke were both called back following forward passes leading to their disallowed tries.
Wales battled but couldn't get over the line. Rhodri Lloyd and Ben Burgess combined to set up Chris Leyshon but he was pushed into touch.
The Australians recovered and from the next play, Watson ran the length of the field to extend his side's lead to 34-0. Corey Jenson's conversion completed proceedings.

Story By : Ian GOLDEN - WALES RL Media Officer
It's the last big match of the year in Wales on Wednesday 30 November
Wales under 18s have named an unchanged line-up to take on Australian Institute of Sport at The Gnoll in Neath this Wednesday (kick-off 7.15pm).
Just the 18th man has changed for Wales with Lewis Barnett coming into the fray and will be ready to play if any of the named 17 pick up an injury.
The Welsh youngsters are on a high after winning a tough encounter against England Community Lions 29-28 in Wrexham on November 13th.
They will be once again captained by Rhodri Lloyd, who has his first outing as a Wigan Warriors player following his transfer to them earlier this month.
The well-drilled Australians will be tough opponents having had a good first leg of their tour in France, winning 40-12 against France under 19s but losing out 35-32 against France under 18s a couple of days later.
Having arrived in Britain to their Bristol base on Monday night, they'll be looking for a win to bounce back, while Wales will be looking to build on their English win a couple of weeks ago with their players also aiming to get into the Great Britain Community Lions team for another chance to take on the Australian team on Wednesday 7th December in York.
The two sides last met two years ago in Blackwood with the Aussies running out 38-18 winners.
Admission is just £3 for adults, £1 for juniors aged under 16 and can be paid at the gate at The Gnoll.

Lions prepare for touring Australians.
Rugby League Community Lions U18s head coach Kelvin Lockett has named a 20-man squad ahead of his side’s game against the touring Australian Institute of Sport at Heworth ARLFC, York, on Wednesday 7 December, kick off 7.30pm.
The squad will train on Saturday 3 December, after which Lockett will name his side for the encounter against the highly-rated tourists.
Gillette Conference Youth League champions Thatto Heath Crusaders provide three members of the squad, as do Cumbrian outfit Wath Brow Hornets, whilst there could be plenty of local interest as Heworth’s Tyler Craig is in with a chance of selection for a game which is to be played on his home ground.
The AIS – currently in France for a two-game trip – kicked off their tour with a convincing 40-12 victory over France U19s and they will also take on France U17s, Wales U18s and the England Academy side before concluding their tour with the Community Lions clash.

BRISCOE CALLED INTO ENGLAND ACADEMY
Story & Photo By : Nathan Clarke - RLF Media Release
Leeds Rhinos youngster Luke Briscoe has been called into the England Academy squad for the match against the Australian Institute of Sport at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday December 4 (3.00pm)
Briscoe, younger brother of England and Hull FC winger Tom, has been joined by Rhinos’ team-mate James Duckworth as the latest additions to a side which is hoping to build on the success of the 2010 Academy squad which secured a 2-0 series victory against the Australian Schoolboys.
“It’s great to be able to bring Luke into the squad,” said England Academy coach Dave Elliott. “We’ve been monitoring his progress all year and been in close contacts with his coaches and we’re delighted to have him in the mix.
“He’s a very enthusiastic player and a great presence around the camp.
He’s got lots of skill in attack and he’s very tough in defence as well and a great talent to add to the squad.”
Elliott guided his charges to a 2-0 series win over the Australian Schoolboys last autumn and he’ll be hoping to see that success continue this year when the AIS arrive at Leigh.
“We’re all very excited about getting back into camp and preparing to take on some of the best young players in the world,” he said. “We’re very excited about this group of players and because they are Under-17 instead of Under-18, it will be interesting to see how they cope with making the step up to the Academy level.
“It’s a massive test for our lads and even more so because they’ll be playing against lads who are 18 and 19, but we have a lot of belief.
“There’s been a feel-good factor in the Academy set-up which started after the series win last year and it’s had a domino effect since then. The new players in the squad have really picked up on that and we want to keep the momentum going now and take it into 2012.
“The AIS are a talented outfit. They beat the French Under-17s 40-12 last week and they’re playing the French Under-19s as well so they will have some match practice before they play us. They’ll be a strong and powerful outfit, which is exactly what you’d expect from an Australian team, but we’ve got plenty of talent at our disposal as well.”
Tickets for the England Academy v AIS fixture at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday, December 4 (3.00pm) cost just £3 and can be purchased by visiting Leigh Sports Village http://goo.gl/fxTeK

AIS BOYZ OFF TO BATTLE FIELDS
Story & Photo By :
THe boyz have been to Paris, done some shopping, checked out most of the famous landmarks including the Eiffle Tower.
Today the touring squad are heading for some more serious stuff, visiting and honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice on the fields of different battle, World War 1 battle fields of the Somme, Ville Bretonu and Frommelle.
The AIS schaolarship is not only to provide a pathway to the world of professional rugby league, it is also to give squad members a look at some of our Nations history.
Over the past couple months at the AIS in Canberra, the boyz were givensome home work, which was to find some information about someone from their own home town who died on the fields of battle in France during the 1st world war, then find that guys grave and pay respects on behalf of the community.
The boyz will have that opportunity today when they visit the war memorials at the Somme and more importantly Frommelles, where many young and eager Aussie diggers lost their loves
We have been having communication probs with the squad, so we havent been able to do anymore interviews, but we will soon
It will be nice to read the match report from the 2nd test when dave can kick it to us :-) |

OUR UNDER 18 TO TOP
The XIII of France Under-18, after an epic duel of intensity, beat his counterpart from the Australian Institute of Sports in Plaisance du Touch, the close score of 35-32, after reaching the break in the lead, 26-16. Three years ago on this same field of Haute-Garonne, the Australians were imposed from 37 to 12. Those under 18 are deleted and the failure of the age of 19 lights, defeated 12-40 by less than 19 of the AIS, two days earlier at Saint-Gaudens. |

RECOVERY FOR THE BOYZ TODAY
Story & Photo By :
This morning the boyz and staff are having a bit of a sleep in after last nights magnificent team victory over the French u19's in the 1st game of the 2011 tour.
Right now, the squad is going for a walk, then a late breaky, then a swim, before some training this arvo (french time) to prepare for the 2nd tour Match against the French u17, Sat morn Aussie time.
We spoke to tour manager Dave Norman who said the coaching staff were pleased with last nights game.
As a sign of respect for the French junior rugby league which has vastly improved over the past few years, the AIS began their stay in France a few days early to have a better preperation for the 1st game which certainly had positive results on a dewy ground overnight.
Dave Norman reported the French officials were amazed with the speed of the Aussies all over the paddock and said the AIS teams defence was a hightlight which rattled thier French oppontents from the start and right through the match.
"A win in the 1st game is a very nice way to go into the 2nd match on Friday " Dave Norman said
The boyz who didn't play in last nights match are biting at the bit to get it on in the 2nd game.

Story & Photo's By :
Congratulation to all the players selected on a fine 2011 footy season who have been selected in the 2012 AIS Rugby League Program.
The AIS rugby league program offers an excellent opportunity to players from all over Australia except Metro Sydney, this latest camp have players from Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Victoria, Queensland and NSW Country.
The 46 or so 2012 AIS inductee's have been at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra this week training under some of the most capable junior rugby league coaches in the nation.
Whats on offer to these talented young men is an AIS Scholarship, the chance to learn and progress through the rugby league ranks to the NRL with dozens of AIS scholarship holders going on to play not only NRL footy, but in some cases represent their State and their Country.
Each year the AIS rugby league program takes a squad of about 25 or so players overseas on the trip of a life time to play test matches against the French and English rep teams.

OK, WHO WANTS TO BE IN THE AIS FOOTY PROGRAM
Story & Photo's BY : & Brian Johnson
After the success of the 2010 AIS Tour and the OurFootyTeam coverage of the January AIS Players Camp, we have been recieving quiet a few enquiries about how do you get picked for the AIS rugby league program.
So we asked AIS Rugby League Head Coach Mr. Brian Johnson, once again Brian was only too happy to help and send the following statement.
The AIS Program selects players from areas outside the NSW junior rep system. We cannot scholarship anyone who lives within that area.
To clarify – we cannot scholarship anyone from Sydney, Newcastle, Canberra, Wollongong.
On occasion however, when we are preparing for the overseas tour we are allowed to offer places on the tour to players whom we feel would “plug a gap” for us in our playing roster.
This happens occasionally as some clubs don’t want their players that have been involved in the program to go on the tour.
Scouting for the program: Players are selected on the basis of their performance in representative games.
By watching the rep games we get a chance to watch the good players compete against other good players.
The higher up the rep ladder a player is the more likely he is to be offered a scholarship.
The system of rep matches that currently exists allows us to look at players at different levels and make a determination on which of those players we would like to offer scholarships to.
Coaches and Scouts are watching these rep games in all Australian States. |

AIS WELCOME 2011 INDUCTEE'S & CELEBRATE 10 YEARS
Story & Photo's By :
The Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra will tomorrow welcome the 2011 AIS Rugby League Squad for a year going through the footy program which has included players like Israel Falou, James McMannis, Tommy Leroy Lars, the Aubusson Bro's, Cale Hobday and Steve Coombes and 201 Australian Schoolboys captain Paul Carter
The Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra will tomorrow welcome the 2011 AIS Rugby League Squad for a year going through the footy program which has included players like Israel Falou, James MacMannis, Tommy Leroy Lars, the Aubusson Bro's, Cale Hobday and Steve Coombes.
As the new inductees gather in the Nations Capital for camp, the 50 odd players who turn up this morning will be in for a good first week of intence trianing.
Some of the north queensland boyz may be late, some of the Rockhampton boyz are stuck on their farms surrounded by water and can't make the Canberra trip.
"The past 9 or 10 years we have shown we have a very viable program, i really believe we (The AIS Program) have made the difference between playing NRL football and not playing NRL football" AIS Head coach Brian Johnson told ourfootyteam by phone last nite.
"We have four camps a year, this is the first camp for the 2011 squad", said legendary team manager Col Matthews, "we have had about 50 players from the AIS program go on to play NRL football"
The first camp this week is all about basics, "we teach basic skills, a set of basic skills we teach, we think it is important players pick up these skills", said Brian Johnson.
The highlight for the AIS squad for those selected is a European Tour at the end of the years which includes matches in France and the United Kingdom.
The AIS have invited ourfootyteam up to the camp this year, so not only will we be covering the AIS squads European tour, but we will be following the progress of all the squad members.
We will have more good news about the AIS Program later in the week and through out the year |
