AIS WELCOME 2011 INDUCTEE'S & CELEBRATE 10 YEARS
Story & Photo's By :
The Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra will tomorrow welcome the 2011 AIS Rugby League Squad for a year going through the footy program which has included players like Israel Falou, James McMannis, Tommy Leroy Lars, the Aubusson Bro's, Cale Hobday and Steve Coombes and 201 Australian Schoolboys captain Paul Carter
The Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra will tomorrow welcome the 2011 AIS Rugby League Squad for a year going through the footy program which has included players like Israel Falou, James MacMannis, Tommy Leroy Lars, the Aubusson Bro's, Cale Hobday and Steve Coombes.
As the new inductees gather in the Nations Capital for camp, the 50 odd players who turn up this morning will be in for a good first week of intence trianing.
Some of the north queensland boyz may be late, some of the Rockhampton boyz are stuck on their farms surrounded by water and can't make the Canberra trip.
"The past 9 or 10 years we have shown we have a very viable program, i really believe we (The AIS Program) have made the difference between playing NRL football and not playing NRL football" AIS Head coach Brian Johnson told ourfootyteam by phone last nite.
"We have four camps a year, this is the first camp for the 2011 squad", said legendary team manager Col Matthews, "we have had about 50 players from the AIS program go on to play NRL football"
The first camp this week is all about basics, "we teach basic skills, a set of basic skills we teach, we think it is important players pick up these skills", said Brian Johnson.
The highlight for the AIS squad for those selected is a European Tour at the end of the years which includes matches in France and the United Kingdom.
The AIS have invited ourfootyteam up to the camp this year, so not only will we be covering the AIS squads European tour, but we will be following the progress of all the squad members.
We will have more good news about the AIS Program later in the week and through out the year |

DALEY TACKLES EUROPE
Story BY : DAYARNE SMITH
Snails and frog’s legs were on the menu and the weather was so cold a footy match had to be cancelled, but Daley Boney says his recent trip to France and the UK was a fantastic experience.
Boney travelled to Europe as part of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) under 19s rugby league squad, returning home on Tuesday after almost a month overseas.
The team flew out on November 12, arriving in France where they spent their first days sightseeing and training.
“When we got there it was freezing,” Boney said.
“It was hard trying to talk to people, we had an interpretor but they weren’t with us all the time.
“In France we spent a fair bit of time looking around and we visited war memorials, castles and churches and in Paris we visited the Eiffel Tower.”
The 17-year-old, who plays second row for the Muswell-brook Rams under 18s, said the food was not exactly what he was used to.
“I ate frog’s legs and escargot – it was pretty good actually,” he said.
“In France every morning for breakfast we would make up hot chocolate in a bowl and dip bread and jam into it, it was good at first but after a couple of days I was sick of it.”
The squad’s first match was against the French under 17s on November 16, with the AIS team defeated 23 to 16.
A few days later the boys backed up to take on the French under 19s in what was a much closer match, losing 14 to 12.
On November 23 the team travelled to Fromelles to pay respect to the fallen Australian soldiers buried there.
Although the local museum is normally only opened
on a Sunday, the townspeople opened it to allow the boys to see the war relics and hear stories from the local historian.
On November 25 the AIS team had its first game in English when it took on the Warrington Academy Wolves.
The AIS dominated that match, with Boney scoring a
try to add to the 44-6 winning margin.
With the UK suffering unseasonably early snow and a massive cold snap, the fourth scheduled match of the tour, against the Widnes Vikings, was cancelled because the ground was frozen.
Boney said the trip was a great experience, and he enjoyed playing alongside so the many talented players in the squad. |
AIS ARRIVE HOME SAFELY
Story & Photo By :
The AIS rugby League Team arrived safely in Sydney this morning after a fantastic tour which saw them play in 2 different countries.
Well done boyz, time to de-frost and get back in an Aussie lifestyle.
The Brian Johnson lead AIS squad arrived in Sydney this morning to a packed Sydney Airport, it seems Oprah had her 300 Americian audience flying to the land down under on their tax payer funded jount, but we were not there to see Oprah, we had much more important people to meet, the AIS footy team
The boys all looked tired but wrapped to be home, they hit Sydney on a beautiful sunny summers day.
A real big thank you to all the familes and friends of the touring AIS party for all your messages of support, i know it ment a lot to the boyz over there in freezing old England.
Once again it has been our privilage to cover the AIS tour, thanks you Brian, Dave, Rocket and all the squad.
The AIS program continues with a new group of young footballers who go into camp at the AIS in Canberra in early January for a week, then they will get it on with the Canberra Raiders SG Ball team |

TODAY'S TOUR UPDATE
Story & Photo By :
Today the AIS touring squad are heading out into the winter England country side to visit a few of the famous landmarks and tourist attractions.
Due to the record breaking cold snap, most tourist attraction have been closed, the boys are heading to Warrick Castle, which is used for plenty of movies and tv shows, so we all most likely know what it looks like, but it's not quite the same as being there.
The Squad are also heading to BATH, which we all know is famous for its hot springs and bath houses built by the romans about 1,000 years ago, (hope they have changed the water since then - lol)
Once again we thank Dave Norman and the boyz for another chance to catch up to the players and find out what their thoughts are as the 2010 AIS tour heads to Heathrow airport for the long flight home and some sunshine.

VIKINGS GAME CANCELLED
Widnes VIKINGS MEDIA RELEASE
Despite the best efforts of the Stobart Stadium ground staff, tonight's Widnes Vikings Youth versus Australian Institute of Sport game has been called off.
The pitch was inspected at 12 noon and the hardness of the pitch, coupled with the fact that temperatures are forecast to be no higher than 0 degrees this afternoon, resulted in the postponement.
Unfortunately, the AIS schedule cannot facilitate a re-arranged fixture.
Apologies for any inconvenience this announcement may cause.
This mornings final game of the 2010 tour against the Widnes Vikings has been cancelled due to the worst weather in England ever.
The match was cancelled because the footy ground is frozen solid - so its back to bed for some - lol |

WOLVES EATEN BY AIS
Story By : Dave Whalley Warrington WOLVES
Warrington Wolves U18s 6 Australian Institute of Sport 44
MAN of the MATCH : Stephen COOMBE (AIS)
A very skilful Australian Institute of Sport side defeated a spirited Warrington Wolves Under 18s team on a bitterly cold night at Wilderspool Stadium on Thursday evening in front of a very healthy crowd.
Warrington got off to a flying start but the extra match sharpness of the Australian side came to the fore and they ran out comfortable winners despite a vey gallant effort from a young Wolves side.
The Wolves opened the scoring in the second minute when good work down the left saw winger Gene Ormsby send centre James Mendeika on a fifty-metre run and he found full back Jordan Burke in support to race over. Scrum half Bobbie Goulding added the conversion.
The A.I.S. looked as though they had hit on eight minutes when full back Kurt Mann went over only for the try to be disallowed, but they were not to be denied two minutes later when winger Ritchie Kennar scored on the right following a fine ball from stand off Mat Mulcahy. Loose forward Shaquile Blair converted to level the score.
The Australians hit the front shortly afterwards when second row Daley Boney capitalised on a Wolves error to score and then ten minutes later pressure on the Wolves line saw hooker Eddie Brimelow combine with scrum half Mat Thorne and Mann to put centre Rhyse Martin over in the left corner. Substitute Sam Foster converted the latter.
Australia increased their lead four minutes before the break when a chip through on the last tackle by Foster saw second row Jake Kelly react quickest to pick up the ball and score at the side of the posts. Foster goaled to give the tourists a deserved 22-6 half time advantage.
Four minutes into the second half Thorne spotted a gap in the Wolves' defence and raced through it to score wide on the left and eight minutes later a kick by the Wolves was charged down by Australia substitute Jack Broughton and Mulcahy hacked the ball on and centre Mat Berwick managed to collect the ball and score on the right corner. Substitute B-J Burgess added the conversion.
The Aussies next try came when Broughton managed to force his way over under the posts from close range to give Foster a simple conversion but then the Wolves enjoyed their best spell of the game as they spent long periods camped in the Aussie half of the field but a combination of fine tackling and some handling errors meant that they were unable to add to their early score.
The A.I.S. scored their eighth and final try of the evening six minutes from time when they went for the power play on the last tackle and an overlap allowed Burgess to power over in the left corner. Foster goaled superbly from the touchline to complete a very impressive 44-6 victory.
After the game Wolves Under 18s Head Coach Gary Chambers said: "The A.I.S are a very talented side and thoroughly deserved the win. It was a good work out for our guys and we have to remember that we are only two weeks into our pre-season training and we were playing against a side that have had quite a few games under their belt over the past couple of weeks.
It was an opportunity for the coaching staff to assess the lads and there were some good individual performances. The lads enjoyed the game and it gives us something to work on as we prepare for the start of the new season. The conditioners were dreading us picking up any injuries but thankfully we have come through the game unscathed."
Former Wire favourite Brian Johnson who is Head Coach of the A.I.S was thrilled to be back at his old stomping ground. He said: "It was great to come back and see the old place. I have many fond memories and it was good to catch up with a couple of my old team mates like Gary Chambers and Chris Rudd. The game was a lot harder than what the scoreline suggests and we are delighted with how it went."

VIKINGS YOUTH VERSUS AIS
Story By : WIDNES VIKINGS
On Monday 29 November, a Vikings Youth team will take on the touring Australian Institute of Sport outfit.
The AIS Rugby League programme was established in 2001 in association with the Australian Rugby League. Together they work to provide a pathway for the ongoing training and development of young players aged 16-18 in rural and regional areas of Australia, as an alternative to leaving home to pursue a rugby league career.
Up to 30 players take part in each year's programme and selection is based on the quality of each player's performances in schoolboy and club representative football. The program runs a national training camp in Canberra each year to improve players' skills in preparation for high performance competition, and organises an international tour of France and the United Kingdom.
Speaking in advance of the game, Widnes Vikings Head of Youth Performance, Phil Finney said, "We know the Australian Institute of Sport will present an extremely strong challenge but everyone in our youth set-up is looking forward to the task ahead.
"Our team will be a fusion of the clubs U18 and U21 players and for our young lads to be given the opportunity of playing a team of AIS's quality is a great privilege, and we are taking this challenge extremely seriously.
"The AIS are coached by former Warrington player and coach, Brian Johnson and given his local connection it doesn't take a fool to realise just how much he'll want to see his charges get one over on Widnes.
"Having said that, our team will be coached by Martin Cunningham and Paul Hulme, a man whose name is etched in Widnes folklore and who has had many a battle over the years against Warrington and still come away with a smile on his face, which gives the game even more of an edge!"
The game will take place at the Stobart Stadium Halton on Monday 29 November. Kick-off is at 7.30pm.
Admission is just £5 for adults and £2 for concessions / juniors. |
AIS TRAIN THE HOUSE DOWN
Dave Norman with the AIS team in England says today 2 training sessions were by far the best sessions of the tour so far.
"Today we had 2 training sessions and a video session and it was the best run the boyz have had on tour" said Dave Norman
The word is the AIS squad will try to get to the next Schoolboys game on Friday at Featherstone.

YOUNG AUSSIES RESPECT OUR HISTORY
Story By : Dave NORMAN ( in the longest text in the histroy of mankind )
Today we travelled north to the village of Fremelle and paid our respects to the Australian soldiers whom have only recently been found and identified and returned in the new cemetary at Pheasants Wood.
Special attending was paid to the grave of head coach Brian Johnson's wifes uncle and two rugby league players, Herbert "NUTSEY" Bolt and Alex Clingan who both played for the Newtown Jets Club before signing up to go to the 1st world war.
In a great show of esteem in which the Australians are held in France, the townspeople of Fremelles opens the local musuem, which is normallyopened on Sundays, to allow our boyz the opportunity to view all the relics and to hear all the stories of Australian Heroism told by local historian.
The boyz all found it a very moving and proud experience
We should have full communications with the AIS squad tonite Aussie time. |

The AIS squad will be visiting the new War Grave at Fremelles at the War Memorial which will no doubt affect all the fella's differently.
We spoke to Dave Norman this morning who was keen to talk about the French teams.
"the French have come a long way recently, we will have to prepare better for these games, they are playing some particualarly good footy, they should be very proud of them selves and the coaching staff have been doing an excellent job with their development"
Oh yeh, hopeless VODAFONE, they still have not managed to fix the teams internet connection, so no interviews for a couple more day. |

1ST TEST WRAP
WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK DAVE NORMAN FOR THE MATCH REPORT
THe difference between the two team in the 1st Test was their kicker, who was on song
We have to say sorry to all ourfootyteam's readers as the only way we can communicate is via telephone as they are having trouble with their internet connection, stupid vodafone doesn't work, and their customer service is none existent, we are hoping to recitfy this situation so we can interview the boyz.
The French led 6 - 0 after 10 minutes and the score remained the same for most of the 1st half until the 23 rd minute when the AIS scored, the French hit back with a controversal try which saw the ball appear to bounce out of the field of play then bounce back for one of the French players to slip in a score, then right on the bell landed a sweet field goal, half time score 13 - 4

VILLEFRANCHE-DE-ROUERGUE. THE CROWD TO SHARE THE VICTORY OF THE YOUNG FRENCH RUGBY LEAGUE
Story & Photo By : LADEPECHE
Around 1500 people for a contract filled with many levels. For young players from the France team junior rugby league has always been leading the race by winning score of 23-16. Given that Australia is more, the nation's major sport. Organizers of the departmental committee of rugby league, too, led by Alain Dintilhac and its partners, who wanted this Tuesday night is a real feast oval. And she was beautiful. The beautiful game, lively, dynamic, well removed by a younger generation who can bite and share his favorite sport.
Moreover, young team France have managed to run their business well. They entered the game with an immense desire. A first test result after a pass at the foot, perfectly proportioned as the 9th minute. Test which the Australians replied in the 23rd minute.
But another test, pretty lucky on the half hour, allowed the Blues to take the lead at the break to lead 13-4 after adding a drop opportunist. Harder was the recovery. The players of the southern hemisphere became more incisive.
Several faults hands prevented them from going to lady. A penalty in the 60th put the lights a little more sheltered. Until the 58th minute when their opponents came back into the game. to 15 to 10, nothing was done.
It took unsuperbe cons of French back line for a new test to ensure victory. A final action enabled the Australian to reduce the score. |
FRENCH U17's TOO GOOD ON THE DAY
Story By :
Once again the French have proved they are the most improved junior league in the world with a 23 - 16 victory over the visiting AIS side this morning in the south of France.
As with most games we play in France, the penality count was a shocker, the penality count was 17 - 5 which gave the French plenty of the footy and possession.

JOHNSON RETURNS TO WILDERSPOOL
Story & Photo By : WARRINGTON WoLVeS
Former Warrington player and coach Brian Johnson will make a return to Wilderspool later this month when the Wolves Academy take on the Australian Institute of Sport.
The match will be part of the Australian's touring agenda which starts this week and will be one of only two opportunities to watch this AIS side in England with the remainder of the tour being played in France, so don't miss out.
The Wolves Academy will entertain the Australian Institute of Sport side on Thursday 25th November 2010 kicking off at 7.30pm. Admission will be £5 Adult and £2 concessions/juniors.
John Bastian, Director of Youth Development, said: "We will field a strong 2010 under 18s side for this competitive game. It will be a great test for the side against the top junior players in Australia.
This is a high profile game for the academy to get this opportunity to play the Australian Institute of Sport.
It will be good to welcome back a former player and coach in Brian Johnson (pictured) who is held with high regards at the club.
Gary Chambers and Richard Marshall will be in charge of the team and hopefully we can get as many supporters as we can down at Wilderspool to enjoy what we expect to be an entertaining and hard fought game of Rugby League."

The French Juniors have been the steady improvers for the past few years in the world of junior rugby league nand should give the visiting Aussies a run of rtheir money.
AIS forward Alex Mammone is looking forward to firstly getting into the side and Alex reckons " Yeh, it will be good, i can't wait". Alex is a big hard running forward and has actually eaten Frogs Legs and reckons "they taste like chicken" and who we last saw playing for NSWCIS at the ASSRL Under 18s Champs on the Gold Coast.
Dave Norman, who once again will be on tour with the boyz said th eside will be selected tonite after training, "Brian will be selecting the team later today".
Talking to Dave at the Airport on Friday, Dave said, " we think we have a very good team despite loosing players to the Schoolboys, and we expect them to act accordingly. |

WALES UNDER 18 PREPARING FOR ENGLAND AND AUSTRALIA
Story & Photo By : WALES RUGBY LEAGUE
The Wales under 18 side are preparing for their big matches...
The Wales under 18 side are preparing for their big matches against England Community Lions and Australia in the next fortnight with both games being played at Caerphilly RFC.
The game against England takes place on Wednesday 17th November with the Australian clash six days later on the 23rd. Both games kick off at 7.30pm.
The England clash has become an annual event but the Australian tie hasn't been played for four years.
Since the last time that Wales took on the Australian Schoolboys back in 2006, 13 of those 17 Australians have since played professionally in the NRL with Israel Folau, who has played for Queensland and Australia, Mitchell Pearce who has played State of Origin for New South Wales and Joseph Paulo, who played for Samoa in the 2008 World Cup, standing out. The tie against Wales this year on Tuesday 23rd November could see more stars of the future.
The Wales squad was selected following a trial at Caerphilly with over 70 young hopefuls attending.
Apart from two players from Harlequins in London, which continues the Wales Rugby League's strong bond with them, the team has been selected from professional and community clubs in South Wales and includes four players who won a senior cap against Italy recently.
There are four players from this years Crusaders and Wales under 16 team including captain Courtney Davies and the talented Dominic Franchi while former U18 international Dan Crimmins returns after a 12 month absence from the sport.
Player Development Manager at Wales Rugby League, Dan Clements said: "After a successful trial, we have assembled possibly our strongest under 18 squad to date. We have four full internationals in there supplemented by a lot of experience from the Crusaders academy, Harlequins academy and Wales under 16 sides. I must give credit to everybody that trialled, it really proves there is a desire out there for players to play our sport, and everybody acquitted themselves really well.
"I know that the squad and coaching staff are now getting preparations underway for an exciting two match series against England Community Lions and the best junior side in the world, the Australian Schoolboys."

AIS - EUROPE, HERE WE COME
Story & Photo By :
GUNNEDAH’S Heath McIlveen and Bendemeer’s Jack Broughton join a growing tradition when they fly out to Europe with the Australian Institute of Sport squad on Friday.
Since its inception the AIS program has given local players the chance to go on tour each November and for these two locals it’s a great way to end a successful year.
“It’s a big thing,” Broughton said.
“We get two games against France and two games against English sides.
“It’ll be a good trip.”
Broughton helped Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School win the University Shield in September while McIlveen was a member of the Gunnedah Bulldogs under 18s squad which won the Group 4 premiership, although he had to miss some of the year with injury.
The tour caps the season perfectly.
McIlveen will play front row for the AIS while Broughton will slot into the backrow.
They are also members of the Wests Greater Northern Academy squad and join another GNA player, Muswellbrook’s Daley Boney, in the AIS team.
He is also a backrower.
The AIS squad is chosen from players from outside the Sydney and Brisbane metropolitan areas but has a formidable record overseas with very few losses recorded.
“They picked 24,” Broughton said.
“There were 75 who trialled back in January.
“We’ve had four camps in the holidays.
“We just got back from a 10-day camp which was pretty tough actually.”
The tour takes in Paris and Australian war cemeteries in northern France and then moves to the south of France where the two games against French junior sides are played.
The Aussies then head to London and then to Manchester before facing two junior sides belonging to English Super League teams.
Both Broughton and McIlveen will still be playing locally next year as they sit the HSC but are likely to head to NRL clubs after that.
Broughton is signed to Cronulla and McIlveen to the Newcastle Knights. |
