Story By : GAVIN WILSON
The Australian Institute of Sport came from behind three times to beat England Students 30-36 in a thrilling game at Leeds Rugby Academy on Sunday.
England got off to a strong start when powerful prop James Wallace crashed over for a try converted by Matt Bradley, who was faultless with the boot all afternoon.
AIS soon found their way in to the game and when a well placed kick forced an error from England Full-Back Mark Wilson, AIS Stand-Off Nathan Wilson rounded the home defence with a well timed run from the base of the scrum to make the score 6-4 after 14 minutes.
The tourists then hit the front for the first time after 23 minutes after a deft offload by Jack Kavanagh created an opportunity for substitute forward Michael Barclay to score, converted by Shaun Hudson for a 6-10 lead.
That lead was extended to 6-16 seven minutes later when Left Winger Lorenzo Vogel dived on his own attacking grubber kick, showing real invention while under pressure on the last tackle.
England hit back with two quick fire tries just before the break however; first Sam Williamson reached out to score despite the attention of four defenders, then Left Centre Will Collins ran on to a perfectly timed flat pass at pace from ten yards out and there was no stopping him giving England an 18-16 lead at Half Time.
AIS Scrum Half Christian Hazard was on hand to support a Sam Blanch break to give the visitors the lead once again after 44 minutes, but a mix-up under a high ball just moments later gifted England's Sam Williamson his second try of the afternoon.
Mark Wilson extended England's lead to 30-22 by catching a pinpoint kick from Matt Bradley to score after 55 minutes.
Nathan Wilson - who was outstanding throughout – reduced England's lead to just two points on the hour mark with a 40 yard break to score.
Wilson was then the architect in the best and most crucial try of the afternoon. His offload to Rhys Norman in midfield created space for a break that was finished superbly by Casey Burgess and AIS hit the front for the third time with 15 minutes remaining, the score 30-34.
As this pulsating game entered its final phase England were pushing hard for a winning score but the AIS defence remained strong.
Touring Full-Back Shaun Hudson then converted a penalty with 2 minutes remaining and despite England regaining the ball from the kick off, they could not convert pressure into points, and AIS held on for a memorable victory. |
