WESTS TIGERS-BOUND CONNELLY LEMUELU KICKS GOLDEN-POINT FIELD GOAL TO TAKE KEEBRA PARK TO TITLE

Story & Photo By : Connor O’Brien, Gold Coast Bulletin

WITH a state championship on the line, up stepped star Keebra Park State High fullback Connelly Lemuelu.

The match, played yesterday at Pizzey Park, shaped as a David and Goliath battle with Coombabah rank outsiders to the giant Keebra line-up.

What ensued was a tense, dramatic, see-sawing GIO Schoolboys Cup final between two talented and desperate sides.

Across 60 minutes the lead changed five times, before a late penalty goal to Coombabah winger Callum Boomer sent the decider into golden point.

Off the back of an excellent carry by Payne Haas the ball was fired to Wests Tigers-bound Lemuelu, who calmly slotted a 35m field goal to send Keebra’s huge supporter base into raptures.

“It’s pretty good – overwhelming,” an emotional Lemuelu told the Bulletin.

“Most of the boys have been waiting a few years, me myself have been waiting for two years just to make the Queensland final let alone the Australian final.

“We just stuck to our structure, we didn’t panic at the end and lucky for me I ended up with that final field goal.”

His father Konelio was in tears, having flown across from New Zealand to watch the game.

“I think that’s probably my good luck charm,” Lemuelu said. “Dad’s going back to New Zealand (today), Mum’s turn next week in the Australian final.”

Keebra last won a state title in 2013, when they went on to claim their second national crown.

They will play Westfields Sports High in the national final in Sydney next week.

Keebra coach Glen Campbell said they’ll go in confident: “We’re not going down there to run second”.

Prior to his field goal heroics, Lemuelu had earlier helped his side edge ahead in the 55th minute, showing an outstanding sleight of hand in a scrum-based set piece to put centre Liam Pakau through for his second try untouched.

The result ended Coombabah’s fairytale run which included beating heavyweights Palm Beach Currumbin State High and Kirwan State High – last year’s national winners – in consecutive matches.

Only millimetres prevented them progressing further, with five-eighth Taine Tuapiki’s field goal attempt into the wind in the dying minutes of regular time scraping just under the cross bar.

Coombabah coach Scott Marlow had special praise for standout captain Rei Rei Marsh, who carried a fractured sternum, and said the side had paved the way for future success.

“It’s been very difficult being the new kids on the block with Palm Beach and Keebra here so it’s been a long time coming for Coombabah but these boys have really set a great legacy for the teams that come in the future,” he said.

Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell was among a high-profile crowd. Six Keebra players – Lemuelu, Pakau, Oscar Tui, Liam Hampson, Kelepi Lui and captain Tom Mikaele – will join the NRL club’s under-20s 2017 squad.

BLUE WALL

Full enjoyment of this literary masterpiece will rely on a modest knowledge of Civil war history and a smattering of good humour.

Many, many years ago in football history land (1970 ish) when competition for South Eastern dominance was as fierce as it is today, Keebra found themselves leading a tight game and digging deep in defence with wave after wave of marauding opponents attacking their line relentlessly.

Time after time they repelled these forays and as the mists rose on full time Keebra stood strong, together with their line intact and as the defeated opposition captain limped off with the help of those of his team mates still standing he was heard to mutter……”There stands Keebra like a BLUEWALL………….”

This was the origin of this moniker and while imitation is perhaps a form of flattery it is also lacking in respect for the blood, sweat and tears shed on not only on that day but by countless Keebra teams since.

Anyhow I digress……..

Congratulations boys after a hard fought win over Coombabah in the Qld final of the GIO National Schoolboy’s Cup. It was an epic encounter with a bit of everything……The bounce of the ball, the disallowed try, the last minute penalty and the ever so nearly field goal and I don’t think anyone went home not being thoroughly entertained by two teams who played hard and fair to the end.

With nothing to lose after a giant killing run into the final, Coombabah’s ad-hock style of desperation football confused the structure of the Keebra side who made a few uncharacteristic errors but managed to remain patient and calm under pressure with a maturity that eventually paid dividends. With the crowd in a frenzy and pressure building it was full back Connelly who calmly stepped up and slotted the golden point for a well deserved win in testing conditions.

The next test is Westfields Sports High in the National Final who disposed of The Hills Sports High in a similar Golden Point NSW National semi and while there are two teams in with a shout there is an only ever will be one BLUEWALL.
KEEBRA PROGRESS TO QLD FINAL

Last Wednesday saw Keebra Park travel to Kougari Oval in Brisbane to contest the QLD Semi Finals against the number 2 Northern side, Ignatius Park from Townsville.

With a lot of rain about in the area, conditions were extremely tough and Keebra knew they needed to execute a simple and efficient game plan to progress to the next stage.

Keebra couldn’t have started better, scoring with their first 3 possessions of the football. Some well executed shifts of the ball to the right edge resulted in Jaxson Paulo crossing for an early double, however it was the lead up work by David Fifita that proved the difference right throughout the match.

Keebra kept the pressure on and extended the lead through a strong determined effort by Brock Hamill to force his way over from short range. Keebra took a 24-6 half time lead, however it could have been more without some errant goal kicking.

Keebra knew it was imperative that we scored first in the second half to assert our dominance in the game and not allow Ignatius Park to gain any momentum.

However, Keebra failed to deliver in the opening set, dropping the ball and allowing Ignatius Park to score. This was the last chance that Ignatius Park was given however.

Keebra reaffirmed their position in the game, scoring four more tries to Tom Mikaele, David Fifita, Kees Nicholson and Jono Siofele.

This put the game beyond doubt, with a resounding 46-12 victory.

Keebra are looking forward to the next challenge in the QLD Final in two weeks’ time with the opportunity to be State Champions and progress to the GIO Final the following week.

This game will be against fellow Gold Coast school Coombabah who have disposed of some more fancied adversaries on their march towards Sydney and who will no doubt provide worthy opposition in what will be a cracker of a game.

KEEBRA PUT THE REDS TO BED
Story By : Darren Hart KPRL

The Keebra Park versus Palm Beach fixture is always the highlight of South Qld school sport with both sides having a proud tradition in the schoolboy rugby league and both sides having produced a large number of boys who have gone on the represent at regional, state, National and International level.

Those who have followed this history would have seen clashes between Ben Murdoch and Ryan James, Jordan Kahu and Jordan Rankin, and a host of Keebra boys including Bodene Thompson, Greg Eastwood, Rangi Chase, Benji Marshall, Ben Teo, Kenny Edwards, Cory Norman, Jai Arrow, Robert Lui, Isaac Liu, Sam Moa, JJ Felise, Blake Leary, Vaha Pulu on the paddock, playing in this very same encounter.

The evening kicked off with the ever improving Under 15's going down 38-20 to a representative laden PBC in a much closer encounter than many anticipated. The Keebra boys won the second half and it was only another slow start that put them too far behind to cause a real upset.

The crowd continued to gather and as Keebra sent the ball flying high from the kick off the chatter and air of excitement was replaced by an eerie silence and it was GAME ON.

The game began at a frantic pace with each probing run and complete set met with equal determination until big 5/8 Conns managed to capitalise on a passage of prolonged Keebra pressure and force himself across the PBC line for the opening score.

Palm Beach did manage to equalise a few minutes later and then it happened……..The Reds had seemingly managed to swing the momentum back in their favour with a passage of play that saw them attack the Keebra line with 6 back to back sets that were unbeknown to them were actually orchestrated by Keebra in the first ever display of ROPE-A-DOPE ever seen on a football field. Let me explain……………………………………..

All schools work on set completion and set plays to control possession and it is no different at Keebra Park, but always innovative and always at the cutting edge it was decided that the passing of such an iconic figure as Mohammed Ali deserved to be recognised with a tribute fit for a man of his status.

Possession was gifted to Palm Beach and for all those spectating they had Keebra on the “ropes”…
Keebra ducked and weaved and swung and swayed and took all that the boys in Red could muster…..and they did it again and again with the majority of “blows” being absorbed by an urgent slide defence and numbers in the tackles that deflected any power from the Palmy onslaught. By set 5 the Reds were out on their feet and by set 6 it they had in effect “punched themselves out”.

Keebra saw it in their eyes…ducked under a flailing blow and gathering the ball raced up the field to deliver not one but three knockout blows with tries to Liam Paku, Antonio Nelu and just before half time a solo effort to Damion Dumas that saw the boys back in the sheds with a 20-4 lead.

The second half took off much where the first had finished with Keebra getting back to a couple of classic set plays that saw big Tom Mikaele crash over twice under the posts and wily halfback Tanah Boyd crossing for a try of his own leaving the final score at Keebra 36 PBC 4.

This win saw Keebra retain the Alan Langer Trophy and set up a GIO quarter final clash with Marsden SHS.
Well done boys and thank you to the crowds that came down in support.
See you after the holidays.
KEEBRA PARK AIMING HIGHER IN 2016

With the school holidays well and truly over and the Christmas holidays no more than a fading memory, it's time to move away from the season of goodwill and on to the season we have all been looking forward to....THE FOOTY SEASON......

The boys have hit the paddock running and training has begun in ernest.

A combination of last years grade 11"s, some emerging grade tens from last year and a smattering of new talent will once again ensure that competition for spots is fierce.

This year the school will field 3 teams to enure that all boys get to either work their way through the ranks as they mature, or play football at a level that suits their skill and ability level.

This weekend sees a plethora of graduates in action at the Auckland Nines with no less than 11 boys taking to the field across a range of clubs.

Jai Arrow, (Broncos), Lamar Liolavave and Watson Heleta, (Tigers), Te Maire Martin, (Penrith), Jaelen Feeney (Newcastle), Isaac Liu (Roosters), Cory Norman (Parramatta), Henare Wells (NZ Warriors), Greg Eastwood (Bulldogs), and Blake Leary (Manly).

The school wishes all of theses boys the best of luck and we will be following the action closely.....
KEEBRA PARK RIDING HIGH ON BRONCOS SUCCESS

While the Keebra Park Open A side will not progress further in this year’s GIO Cup after a loss to cross town rivals PBC, 2015 has seen the school emerge as the top school in the South Queensland region, winning 3 out of the 6 Broncos competitions.

The Opens finished number one in the Langer Trophy, topping Wavell with an unbeaten season with the Under 15’s replicating this success finishing an undefeated season with a 24-10 victory over Coombabah SHS.

THE FINAL BRONCOS STANDINGS WERE:
Under 13 Renouf Shield: Wavell
Under 14 Hancock Cup: PBC
Under 15 Walters Trophy: Keebra Park SHS
Open B Gee Shield: Keebra Park SHS
Open A Langer Trophy: Keebra Park SHS

With 12 boys from this year’s firsts in grade 11 and eligible for next year and with the obvious talent coming through from the Under 15’s – 2016 looks like another year when the standards at Keebra Park will take yet another step forward, making for a season to savour.

In other news Redbank Plains SHS took out the crown of top school in the Ipswich district with a win in the inaugural Broncos year 7 competition.

REP SEASON WRAP AT KEEBRA PARK

Well the business end of the season in upon us and the knockout stages of the Broncos and GIO competitions loom.

Must win games of 30 minute halves where a simple error can mean a 6 month wait for next season to begin…..

It is a lot of pressure and the ensuing result is absolutely not a true gauge of an individual footballers progress and development.

Some may argue that if a boy is progressing then trophies will follow and it is true that professional teams at the elite level are judged and economically rewarded depending on the outcomes of every single game that contributes to a seasons performance, but those who know can tell you that there are a thousand more variables and a thousand more important outcomes when coaching at the schoolboy level.

Junior coaching is about development. It is about skill development, character development resilience development……. it is about instilling an ethic in a student that is transferable across environments and contexts and is a tool kit that a student can access as situations unfold beyond their schooling careers.

It is this development that is the underpinning force behind the football program at Keebra Park. It is this development that allows our graduates to adapt to situations and succeed in life in a range of disciplines whether they be sporting, tertiary or trade based.

It is that development that sees 18 current graduates playing top class football at the NRL or Super league level.

It is this development that has seen 15 QLD representatives and 4 Australian representatives emerge from this seasons State Championships.
